[Speaker 1]
Okay, we reached a part in the text. It's about what causes death. And what happens to you when you die?

And after that. So when I was at Princeton University, 100 years ago, my mom got cancer. And I searched everywhere in this great university to get some help.

I checked inside of Princeton. Where can I find some help, or what's going to happen to my mom? And I couldn't find any course or any teacher who can help me.

And actually, that's why I became Buddhist. Because the Buddhist teacher can give me a good answer. What will happen to my mom?

And later, what will happen to me? So, here's a nice instruction. It explains how we die.

Again, this is not so you can have depression, and so you can worry about your death. But most people in this world, in English there's an idiom called, they are living a lie. In English we say, they are pretending that they won't die.

And then carefully, they don't talk about death. But if we want to be a good person, we have to prepare. It's like if you know you're going to Harbin, you have to pack your stick.

You have to know what to get ready. Death is much colder than Harbin. Then what to take?

How can we prepare? So, actually the people who study how to die, they are more relaxed than the other people. They are not nervous.

They are not depressed. They are cheerful. Are you going to die?

Yeah. Are you ready? Totally ready.

I'm happy to go. I have a whole plan. Everything will be good.

Especially if I'm Buddha. If I'm a Buddha, I will help many, many people. So, I'm happy.

Okay, so that's why we are studying how to die. It's something they should teach you in the school. Princeton University should have a degree called how to die.

But they don't. So, we will do it here. And it's not to scare you.

It's not to make you sad. If you talk about your death, and you prepare for your death, then you finally, in your life, you can feel relaxed. Because you are ready, and you know what's going to happen, and something beautiful is going to happen.

Okay, so let's go to the book. You guys ready for P-O space apostrophe C-H-I? Okay.

Nice. Wow, you are fast. Okay.

DANG PO'I PHYI BA JI LTAR BYUNG RDZUS NI Means, so how do we die? Then he has a list. PHYI BA'I ...

do you have that? I don't know which one. I need Jasmine's money.

We got to get it ready. Why? No, she gave me, she gave me.

It got mixed up. Okay, let's just spend the money. Alright, here we go.

But I'm going to pay a lot of money this morning, okay? So, get ready. PHYI BA'I RGAN, he says, here's the cause of death, okay?

TSE ZAD PA Your life energy finished. Number two, SONAM ZAD PA Your seeds finished. Number three, YANG SNGA BA MA SPAM PA means you're supposed to be careful while you're alive.

Drive the car carefully. No texting while you are driving the car. Now in America, more people die from texting than die from alcohol, in the car.

A few weeks ago, there was a very beautiful young lady at Princeton University, similar, looks like Xiaoping. Very intelligent. Very nice looking.

And she's a little bit famous. And she's driving her car. Her boyfriend texts her.

She looked for one second. Then hit the big, big truck. And she died instantly.

So, this is another ... it's another way you can die. By the way, if you know your friend or your family member is in the car, then be polite and don't text them while they are in the car.

Maybe you will kill them. And when you are driving, just put the phone down. I never answer the phone in the car.

I don't answer, I don't talk, I don't text. I put the phone in my pocket. If it rings a thousand times, I don't answer it.

Then I tell people, please don't call me while ... if you know I'm driving, please don't call me. So, yangawa means those dangerous conditions.

Yangawa means those dangerous conditions. Be careful. Don't kill yourself.

It's very hard to get this body. Every minute there are about 70,000 karmas inside your body. They are running your body.

Karmas. So, actually this body is very complicated. If a small thing breaks, then you are dead.

So, he has a long list of different factors can kill you. And I want to get it for you. It's a famous list of nine causes that can cause you to die.

This list comes from a sangha. And he went to ... where is that money?

Give me any hundred dollars. I don't care. We can't ...

too many red envelopes here. Okay, let's ... Don't trust her.

[Speaker 2]
Oh, you give.

[Speaker 1]
Okay, you give. Here's my first question. We are going to give a list of the things that can kill you.

This list comes from a sangha. Which monastery did a sangha study at? Almost 2,000 years ago.

Raise your hand. Except Stanley. Where did a sangha study?

Raise your hand, raise your hand. Wow, not many people. People in the back also need money.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They also need money. The best monastery in the world is the Ramey.

That's true. You have a hundred dollars, but it's the wrong answer. Give a hundred.

Give a hundred. It's a good answer, but it's the wrong answer. It's a hundred dollar answer.

You give?

[Speaker 2]
You give?

[Speaker 1]
Did she get the money? She gets a one hundred. Okay.

She gets a one hundred for a good, wrong answer. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Okay.

Okay, who's the other person? That's not the answer I want. Come on, where did a sangha study?

Come on. It's a trick question. In Tushita studying with Maitreya.

Yeah, who gave the answer? Yeah. No, it's there, it's there.

One hundred dollars. Oh, yeah, very nice. Now, one hundred more dollars.

One hundred more dollars. I'm in a ... I'm in a good mood this morning.

Okay? Wait, wait till I ask the question before you raise your hand. It's okay.

I know you know the answer. What else did he study? He studied the causes of death, but what else did he study in Maitreya's place?

You choose, you choose. I know. Microphone, in the microphone.

Lion dance meditation. One hundred dollars. Now, two hundred dollars question.

Three hundred dollars. Difficult. What's the Sanskrit name for lion's dance?

Okay, I give you half. I give you half.

[Speaker 2]
I give you half.

[Speaker 1]
The name Singapore is connected to the word for lion's dance.

[Speaker 2]
Sinhavijaya?

[Speaker 1]
No. I went almost, almost. Very close.

Almost hundred dollars. Wait, somebody has the answer? Raise your hand, please.

You're a Sanskrit scholar. Okay, that's alright. John is a Sanskrit scholar.

He helped us ... Okay, let's go. Nope, nope, nope.

[Speaker 2]
Nice!

[Speaker 1]
Hundred dollars.

[Speaker 2]
Yay!

[Speaker 1]
Okay, nice. Say Sinha. Vijambhita.

Vijambhita. Nice, okay, alright. By the way, John in the back, he has a special job working for John Brady.

He doesn't find a book in Mongolia. That book in Mongolia, only 500 years old. John finds the ancient, ancient Sanskrit book for John Brady.

John Brady. And he finds the old, old book on the palm leaf. And I'd like to thank him for his hard work.

Okay, so here's from Asanga. Nine things that can kill you. Nine things that cause death.

So far, we had your lifetime finish. Your seeds finish. You are using your cell phone in the car.

And now we have nine other causes from Asanga. Number one. You eat the food which is not completely cooked yet.

Number two. You eat unhealthy food like meat or too many youtiao. Number three.

You overload your stomach. You already ate and then you ate again before it's digested. Number four.

Your poop was not good and your food gets stuck inside. Okay, number five. Your body is unable to take the vitamins out of the food.

Number six. You don't have a good doctor who gives you the correct medicine when your body is sick. You don't have a good doctor.

Number seven. You didn't study what kind of food is good for your health. Number eight.

You're eating like constantly during the day. And number nine. You're not meditating.

You're not doing yoga. Now, $500 question. Where's the $500?

You have? Yeah, yeah, yeah, we have. Alright, now listen carefully.

$500 question. Life finished. Seeds finished.

You are using cell phone in the car. You eat too much. You eat unhealthy food.

You eat too often. You don't have good poo-poo. Your body cannot take the vitamins.

You don't have a good doctor. You don't know what food is good for you. You eat at strange times of the day.

And you're not practicing yoga or meditation. Okay? Those are ...

he gave that list. Okay, let's divide into $200 and $300. The question has two parts.

First part is easier. $200. Second part is more difficult.

$300. Okay, here's the first part. Ready?

How much is it? $200. Yeah, Kazakh people, they understand.

Really, only one of those causes is the real cause. Only one is the real cause. Who can tell me?

[Speaker 2]
$200.

[Speaker 1]
Wow. There are also people in the front, you know.

[Speaker 2]
Don't give to you.

[Speaker 1]
Just kidding. Just kidding.

[Speaker 2]
I'm kidding.

[Speaker 1]
Don't give to Stanley. Don't give to Stanley. Because there is a bone, so we have death.

Let me make the list ... Let me make the more clear question. I gave you ...

I gave you 11 or 12 different choices. Which one of those is the real cause of death?

[Speaker 2]
Um ... Yeah!

[Speaker 1]
$200, yeah.

[Speaker 2]
$200.

[Speaker 1]
In English, we have an idiom. To get that answer out of you was like pulling your teeth. Okay, now ...

$300. So, I gave you, I don't know, somebody said 13, 12 or 13 different causes. Only one is the real cause.

So, very important question. Which Master Yonsa is the great Master to teach this question? One of the two main students of Xuanzang.

He wrote 2,000 pages about this question. Nobody ever translated it. We are doing in China soft power program.

Okay, it will take a hundred years, I think. But we finished a lot. Okay, Geshe-la, shut up and ask the $300 question.

Okay, okay, it's coming. So, he gave maybe 12 or 13 causes of death. But actually only one is correct.

For $300. Why he gave the other ones? Why he didn't just teach one cause?

She's getting good exercise. Okay. Because it's easier to understand.

Good. $300, $300. Yeah, his answer, it's easier for the student to understand.

Okay, maybe his student at that time wasn't as smart as my students here. Okay? And if he say, oh, it's just like the pen.

They're like, huh? Just the seed finish. Huh?

Then he ... Oh, and if you eat the wrong food also. That also.

So, the great teachers, especially Buddha, if the audience is sleepy, okay, they will give a simple answer. And it's not 100% correct. But it's correct for those students.

For example, we have Abhidharma. We have Vinaya. We have Middle Way.

We have Mind Only. Some things, they contradict each other. But one person taught all of them.

Buddha. So, many people ask a question. Oh, Buddha taught a Mind Only school.

Then Buddha taught a Middle Way school. Then Buddha taught an Abhidharma school. They are all different.

Sometimes, contradiction. Then you're going to go home. People are going to say, what did you study in Bali?

Oh, we did two things. Number one, we enjoy on the beach. Number two, we learn how to die.

Okay, understand? People will ask you, how to die? Oh, stomachache, always stomachache.

Because those people don't understand seeds. So, very important as a teacher, check your student. Who's your student?

If you go home tomorrow, and you want to share something with other people, then check. What are they ready to listen? Some people you have to say, be careful what you eat.

Geshe-la said, be careful what you eat. Some people you can tell the real story. Help six people.

Help the people who have cancers. Okay, understand? So, when you teach, adjust to the student.

I was supposed to teach in Vancouver. Stanley and Allison had 700 students came. Stanley and Allison several weeks ago.

And this is a CSP branch program. CSP has a special branch program. It's called Silk Road Renaissance, New Silk Road.

And very interesting, for example, there are 400,000 Chinese college students in America right now. Almost half a million. Then we also want to teach those guys about Tang Dynasty.

So, they have special program. Go to the cities where there are many overseas Chinese living. For example, in San Francisco, in America, 26% population is Chinese speaking people.

Okay, million people. So, they have a very cool program called Silk Road Renaissance. China's soft power people, students are helping to teach that after training.

So, me and Stanley and Allison, we prepare a beautiful manual for that Vancouver talk. All about Tang Dynasty. All about Silk Road.

All about Xuanzang, Yuan Tze. Then we go to Vancouver. 700 people come.

Then I stand up. I'm ready to talk about Silk Road. Then I start talk about Xuanzang.

Nobody interested. At all. Then if you're a teacher, you must change immediately.

Then I throw out the manual. It took me one month to write it. Then I just put it down.

Then I teach the pen. Understand? So, when you're teaching, don't be attached to your plan.

I worked hard on that manual. Took me one month. The real reason you die is the seeds wear out.

Why does the pen stop writing? Hundred dollar question. Why does the ink run out?

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. Oh, you ready? You are running out of seed.

Great. No, hundred dollars. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

The ink run out. Then say shut up. Why the ink run out?

Your seeds run out. You want to go deeper? Three hundred?

Dollars? Three hundred dollars. Sometimes I offer a lot of money and I forget the question.

Okay, okay, no, no, I can remember. Okay, now, when the ink run out, it's just seeds run out. Now watch.

Geshe is writing something here. Hi. Okay, nǐ hǎo.

Now, how much I said? One hundred dollars? Oh, three ...

Three hundred dollars. Three hundred dollars. Who wrote on the paper?

Three hundred dollars. The seeds in my mind. Three hundred dollars.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay? Oh no, Geshe-la, the pen wrote.

No, it didn't. Geshe-la, the ink in the pen wrote. No, it did not.

And you don't die from stomach problems. There's only one reason you die. Your seed finished.

If you keep helping the sick people, very seriously, very seriously, you don't have to die. Who wrote this on here? My seeds.

Who wrote the jing kang jing? You did. Okay?

You did. You wrote the jing kang jing. When you read a book and you turn the next page, like watch.

Translate. Turn the page. Okay?

Your mind put the letter at that time. When you watch a movie, my favorite movie, in English we have an idiom, we call it boy meets girl. I love boy meet girl movie.

Me and Veronica, we love to go together. We met each other 50 years ago, a few weeks ago. Then the boy meet the girl.

Then everybody's eating popcorn. Then usually the boy fight with the girl in the beginning, and they don't like each other. Then they, I don't know, they get stuck in their car together.

Then they start to look at each other. Then my popcorn slow down. Then they're getting closer and closer.

Then popcorn stop. I'm like, I'm waiting. Okay, go, go, go.

Then their father interrupt. Hi father. That's my bad seed.

Okay, now if I have a good seed, the movie will change. No popcorn. Okay, all right.

Then I feel happy. That's a good movie. That's a good movie.

Who should I write to thank them for the good movie? Me. Yeah, I made the movie.

Dying. Microphone dying. Your seed finished.

Or microphone dying. Or microphone dying. Oh, why did the microphone die?

Oh, the battery finished. Eh, shut up. Okay, so who made the next minute in the movie?

You did. Okay? If you nice to other people, the boy will always kiss the girl in the movie.

If you're not nice to other people, they will get interrupted just before kiss. Okay, that's your problem. If you don't like my talk, whose fault?

But, but, if you like my talk, that coming from me. Right? Just kidding.

You make everything.

[Speaker 2]
Okay?

[Speaker 1]
And you make the death also. Okay? And when you write on the paper, listen.

What's the real difference between mind only school and middle way school? I can tell you in one minute. Okay?

If you ask the mind only school guy, what writes on the paper? They will say pen writes on the paper. Okay?

If you ask the middle way guy who writes on the paper, they will say US seeds. Now, middle way guy give a very interesting explanation. In the first moment, your seed makes a pen.

In the second moment, your seed makes the writing. Middle way school says a pen does not write. SA BU'I KHONG KHONG BU'I SA SA ZHIG ZHIG KHONG KHONG ZHIG ZHIG SA SHUGS SHANG ZHIG ZHIG BU ROL ZHIG This heart's shinjin.

Shinjin will say pen doesn't write. Stomach ache doesn't kill you. Now you understand.

Your seed make the pen. In the next moment, your seed make the hi but the pen does not make the hi. So you can forget the usual causes.

For example, of success. Working hard doesn't cause success. Good investment doesn't cause success.

Making seeds is the only cause of success. And don't give a talk and say, oh, success has three cause. Number one, find good investor.

Number two, make sure you have good market. Number three, help the other person to make their business and plant seed. That's a fake list.

Oh, what's the third one? That's a fake list. I'll just say it again.

[Speaker 2]
Number one.

[Speaker 1]
What was number one? Investor. Number two, marketing.

Number three, help the other person start a business. We call it, in Buddhism, we call it a fake list. fake list.

Okay, it's a fake. Then we have a fake list in this book also. Only one thing is the real cause.

Why do you die? Yeah, he gave 13 causes. 12 of them are not causes.

Okay, only one is a cause. Okay, got it? All right, thank you.

This is hopeless. Okay, we have four more minutes. Let's use it.

Tim, you almost ready? You want to come up? You want to come up?

Then he talks about what's the special seed to plant to have a good death and go to a good place. So, we have millions of seeds in your mind. It's like a lottery.

Okay, in the moment that you die, in the last minute of your life, your mind will close eyes and pick the lottery number. So, let's study how to pick a good number. Okay, that's important for us.

If you don't study how to die, maybe you pick the wrong seed and you become a horse or something. Okay, so let's study next class how to pick the good seed. Then you don't have to worry about dying.

Okay, I wanted to say one more thing. When we do the fire offering, it used to be I don't like it very much. It takes me several weeks to prepare.

Then the whole thing burn up in two hours. Then I feel like I work for three, four days. Then it all burn up.

It's fun, but it burn up in two hours. Then I'm like, oh, many weeks of work and it just burn up in two hours. It's a little frustrating for me.

Now my life changed. I just do the burning. I just have fun.

It's very fun to you know, I have all the fun. And the three, four weeks of hard work, my friends do it for me. So, we should thank Chunzong.

Yay! And thank you to all the people who helped. That fire offering is about five thousand years old.

It's called Homa. If you go to India, you can see. They are doing fire offering for five thousand years.

My teacher was a great master of the fire offering. And he taught me how to do it for about twenty years. So, you should learn how to do it.

Okay? And you can learn. In this retreat, you can learn.

And you hold that tradition for the next generation. But ask Chunzong to stay. Then she can prepare your fire for you also.

Okay, thank you.
