[Speaker 1] Okay, cool. Then I'd like to thank the Japanese team again for a beautiful dance. Thank you. This year we did a DCI program in Japan, in Tokyo. Then I had a chance to go to Kyoto and study with a teacher there. And we will be doing many programs in Japan. And Sophie Chow is helping. Norika is helping. And I hope all the Japanese team can help. Okay. And come to Bali every year. Okay, good. The Vietnam team asked me to give a small New Year's hello. So, I'd like to welcome all the Vietnamese team who came to this program in Bali. They did a very, very beautiful dance on the first day. And the Vietnam DCI team is growing stronger and stronger, mainly because of the hard work of Mr. Bin. Can you please stand up? And can all the graduates from Vietnam, Sedona College, Vietnam graduates, can you stand up? Ms. Lan? Lan? Oh, they are translating, okay. We have a very strong Vietnamese team in the Sedona College. They are growing very fast in Vietnam. I think Mr. Bin taught 8,000 students last year. Thank you for that. Why are they so successful? They are also building houses for poor people. How many, Mr. Bin? 300 houses for poor people. So, Chinese-speaking countries, you are competing with Mr. Bin. He already chose the land for his college, DCI College plans. So, he's faster than you. Yeah. So, I'd like to say hello to all the Vietnam friends and team. I'd like to wish you a Happy New Year. I think it will be a very good year in Vietnam. I'm very happy with how you are growing, your team, and all your group. The Vietnamese people have a deep, deep love for the ancient wisdom. And they are practicing it very, very well. And there are many teachers are training. And I'm very proud of that. And I hope in 2020, you will 1-1-2-2, 1-1-2-2, double everything. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Happy New Year to Vietnam. Yeah. Okay. So, we're going to continue with the lam rim. I'm on, you can say chi kar, C-H-I space K-H-A-R. C-H-I space K-H-A-R. That's it. Yeah, good. Okay. CI BA'I SEMS NI, CIGAR SKYE BA PHYI MA PHYIR GYI LAS LA GSOS BDEBS LA So, the state of mind when you die. Your mental state when you die. There's a special moment in the death process when you have a chance to choose the karma. So, we're going to talk about that. My teacher, he's a very, very great teacher. In Tibet in 1955, they had a contest with all the Geshes. 10,000 monks came. My teacher was number one. Okay? And very, very tough. I don't like to live with him. We lived together for 30 years in the same house. Then, yeah, that's his picture. Then, it's difficult to live with him. If you have an argument, he always wins, because he's such a good debater. If he says the sky is not blue, I have to agree. You cannot beat him. Then, he's very tough. You know, he's a very tough teacher. And, I don't have a dictionary at that time. He's my dictionary. So, I will go to his room, and I will knock on the door. He said, come in. He got in a car accident earlier in his life. So, he talks just like Star Wars. I knock on the door. Come in. Then, I go in. What do you want? Then, I say, can I ask a question? No. Get out. Then, later I learned, don't go to the room ... don't go to his room without a good Tibetan tea. Difficult to make. There's a big ... and you have to use butter, and salt, and soda powder. And, you can't drink it. I will make for him. Take the cha, knock on the door. Rinpoche, I have a question. Can I ask a question? No. Go away. Then, I say, I have Tibetan tea, fresh tea. Okay, come in. Then, just for one minute when he drink his tea, I can get a short answer. Then, I want to ask him ... many people ask ... many American people. They ask me, what happened when people die? How to take care of people who die? How to help them after they die? Then, I collect all those questions. But, it's impossible to make so much tea. So, one day we are flying to Europe on the airplane. It's an, I don't know, eight hours. I'm sitting next to him. Purposely, I give him the window seat. He cannot escape my question. Then, I'm, Rinpoche, what happens when people die? Then, he has to answer, no choice. So, I talked to him about two hours, and I got a lot of good answers. And I put them in your reading. Okay? I wrote them, and they are in your ... supposed to be in your manual, right? Okay? So, you can get a lot of good advice there. There's some fake books, fake jing, about what happens with dead people. There's a book called Tibetan Book of the Dead. It's called BAR DO GRANGS ROL in Tibetan language. It's fake. The book is fake. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] So, this is good information about death. It's in this book by Pabongka Rinpoche. Okay, and here, here's what he says. PHYI RKA RGYAL BAR PHYIN MO'I PHAN CIG GI LAS LA GSOS BDEBS NA. So, just before you're ready to die, then you will reach into your mind, and you will pick one seed. You have a million, million seeds. And you will pick one seed. Okay? Then in that hand, which picks the seed, we call it ZAD LEN, ZAD LEN. It means DGES PA ZAD PA, DGOS PA LEN PA. These are special words from the Wheel of Life. Okay? So, to understand how you die, and how you choose your karma, you really should study the Wheel of Life. The greatest book on the Wheel of Life is from a monastery called Serame. And we are very lucky. There's a one gentleman, Chinese gentleman from Indonesia and Singapore. He's translating it. Sugeng, are you here? Yeah. I think he told me, for Bali program next year, he will have the book ready. Right? Yeah. No, English, English. No, the Wheel of Life book. Okay? I think it will be the new book next year. Okay? So, we are looking forward to it. Please work hard. Okay, thank you. So, the best explanation, how you choose the seed for your next life, it's in his book. And we will have that book next year, but it's too slow. So, in this book, there's a short explanation. And then next year, when you come back, we're all coming back next year, right? Okay? Yeah. Jasmine and her team are doing all the work. Geshe Michael is a very nice man. Today, I told Jasmine, you and your team, take vacation. Stay in the hotel. One extra day. Then start to work for next year. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Thank you, Jasmine. By the way, this book, they asked me, how many books we should bring to Bali, Geshe-la? I said there's a 700 people coming. Mostly Chinese speaker. Chinese speaking people have jing kang jing in the blood. So, I'm sure all of them will buy a copy. I still have ... we almost sold all of them. I have a few more, maybe, I don't know, a hundred? I don't want to carry them back home. It's too heavy. Okay? This book also, it has a very good introduction about the pen, the four steps, and the two husbands. Now, if the two-husband teaching doesn't work for you, I purposely made a very heavy jing kang jing. If the book doesn't fix your husband, then hit him with the book. Okay? Yeah. Then he will get wisdom. Directly. Direct blessing. Okay? So, anyway, please buy a book. And I'm very grateful for ... almost all of them are bought. Thank you for that. Now I can feed my translators. Okay, so two things. Choose the seed. We call it se-len. Say se-len. Se-len. Se-len. Okay, so I will give you a short Wheel of Life teaching, so we can understand how the karma is chosen when you die. And maybe next year Sugeng can teach it in detail from his book. Okay? So, in the Wheel of Life there are twelve important parts on the wheel. It's the same as the clock. Clock has twelve hours. It goes around this way, and the Wheel of Life is the same. Okay? The first one o'clock is a blind man. It means this person never heard about the pen. Okay? Then trouble start. For example, in the kitchen. Okay? So, if the mom, the wife, if she doesn't understand the pen, then when the kids are not ready for school, she will get angry. She will tell those kids, you are most stupid kids, in this whole city. Kids heard the bad word, and the mom also heard the bad word. Then she heard her own talk, and that hearing herself plants the seed. That new seed, fresh seed in the kid's room, in ancient Sanskrit. It's called sanskrita. Okay? Sanskrita. Or you can say, different words, duche. Okay? Fresh karma. Okay? It's a fresh karma, sanskara. Okay? It's like in your garden, in the springtime, you will put a seed in the ground. And it means she just yelled at the kids. Then that seed is called sanskara, and the process is called sanskrita. Okay? And now she has a fresh seed in her mind. It's like when you put a watermelon seed in the ground. Okay? Then I ... I don't know anything about gardening, but I bought a house about ten years ago, and I want to plant a garden. Then I don't know how, so I decide to take a class. And I went to the gardening beginner's class. And there's about 30 students, and the teacher is teaching how to plant the roses. And then after two days, she said, okay, we're going to have a lottery. And who wins the lottery? I, myself, the teacher will come to their house, and I will help you plant your roses. So, my teacher, he likes to watch the sports on TV. Baseball? His team is the worst one in America. They have a special record for worst team. Then he started to watch baseball. Then I will go give him the tea. Then he's like this ... OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM Then his team will win. Whole year. OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM They win, they win, they win, they win. Then they won the world champion. New York Mets, 1986 or something. 1986. They went from the record worst place, and they won the World Series. Whole world thinks it's a miracle. It's not a miracle. It's my teacher. OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM So, I learned how to do it. In the gardening school lottery, I was like, OM MANI PADME HUM OM MANI PADME HUM Then she picked the name. Oh, Michael Roach. Wow, thank you. That's me. Then she came to my house, and she said, what do you want to plant? Of course, roses. Anything else? No, it's okay. You want to plant some fruits? No, they don't come from garden, they come from the store. My whole life, I think the shikwa, it grows in the grocery store. She said, no, no, no. You are a real city boy. We call city boy. Shikwa, you can plant in your garden. Then it will grow. I said, wow, can you teach me? She said, oh yeah, it's very difficult. I said, okay, show me. Then she bought some watermelon packet? A packet of seeds. Inside maybe, I don't know, 15 seeds. She said, okay, you sit down. I sit down. She said, this is very difficult to plant the shikwa. Oh, teach me. She goes like this. She opened the seed packet, she put it in my hand. Then I'm like this. Then she said, take your thumb, lick it. Stick in the ground. Then put the seed inside. Then cover. Then I'm like, what next? She said, finish. I said, that's all? Yeah. Then I said, okay. I'm waiting for watermelon. Understand? Like, I don't know anything. She said, Geshe Michael, it takes four or five months. It's not going to grow in five minutes. Then go inside, relax. I said, oh, what do I have to do? What do I have to do? Sometimes put water. Watermelon is easy. Then she put water, at that moment she put water. Then I was thinking. I tried to imagine what happened when the water touched the seed. Then inside the seed, I imagined many small factory guys. And when the water touched the seed, they wake up inside the seed. Then they're all like, oh, water came. Well, that's a sign. What? We have to start working. How? We have to push a watermelon out. Okay, let's go, let's go. Everybody start working. You know, more water, more water. You know, push it out. Then I've imagined like that. Why are we talking about that? This one. Yelling at the kids. Sanskara. Fresh, fresh seed. Okay, fresh seed. Then after three more months, four more months ... Yeah, by the way, there's the picture. Thank you. That's the fresh seed picture. That's our link number two. Two o'clock. He's making fresh karma. He's planting the watermelon seed. Do you guys have number ten? [Speaker 2] Dukang? [Speaker 1] Number ten? Jupa Sipa? Okay. By the way, yeah, there's number ten. Okay, this painting was painted for me specially by an artist from Nepal. He paints the Wheel of Life. He's ten years old. Okay? So, he studied in the thangka school. So, some of the pictures are not so good, okay? Take some drinks. So, this is supposed to be a pregnant lady. But he's only ten, okay? Now, when that seed is ready to open, if you plant the seed in April, and, I don't know, October? That seed is all ripe. Let's call it May. May. You plant the seed in April, and then in May, the first sprout will come out. Just before the sprout comes out, we say, ripe karma. In Sanskrit, vasana. Okay, so in Sanskrit, there are two words for seed. In Chinese, you say zhong tsu. But in Sanskrit, two different words. sanskara means fresh seed. In the two husbands' story, that's happening in the kids' room. Fresh seed is being planted. Where? In the mom's mind. She gave me some money. Okay, let's make $100. Ready? Anybody want to make $100? Okay, okay, there's a few people. Where is my $100 lady? You're our most popular person in this room. Wait, I didn't ask a question. Okay, here's the question. The sanskara, the fresh karma, fresh seed, painting number two, that was planted in the kids' room. Okay? Can you show number ten again? Okay, number ten. Karma ready to open. It's the watermelon seed after one month. Sprout is ready to come out. Now, I need exact answer. Okay, not sloppy answer. You ready? Where is this pregnant lady? Seed ready to open. In the kitchen, where is it? $100. You choose, you choose. Take your time. Exact answer. I need exact answer. In the kitchen when the husband yells at her, you are stupid. Nope. I need exact answer. You choose, you choose. Microphone, microphone, microphone. When the husband yells at the wife, when the wife starts to yell back and then starts to plant the seed. Nope. This seed is ready to open. I give you a clue. She's pregnant. She's not giving birth. Show me number eleven again. Show me number eleven. That's eleven. The baby coming out in the kitchen. That's her husband call her fan tong. The baby came out. I want number ten. When the door open. [Speaker 2] When the door open. [Speaker 1] Nice. Nice. Good. Who said, where are they? Sainali. Where? Thank you. Perfect. Perfect answer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Thank you. Okay, when the door open, when the wife touch the door, then that second seed, the pregnant seed, ready to pop. So, when she touch the kitchen door, Sanskrit word, vasana. When she yell at the kids, Sanskrit word, sanskara. Okay? They are both, in Chinese language, zhong tsu. In English, both the same, seed. But in the ancient book, two kinds of seed. Fresh seed. Look, look, look. Fresh seed. Okay? And then ripe seed. Ready to open. Why are we talking about that Geshe-la? We are talking about how does the last seed in your life open? Okay? How does the last seed in your life open? Your life, 65 seeds per second. 65, 65, 65, 65. Only one most important seed in your whole life. Somebody can do on their phone. Ready, Stanley? 65 times 60 times 60 times 24 times 365 times 80 What's the number? His phone broke. Good. It's 160 billion. Yeah, okay. Billion. Billion. 160 billion. Okay. Okay, in your life, if you live 80 years, 160 billion seeds are opening. Only one most important when you die. Okay? In the kitchen, it's the seed when she touches the door. Okay? Most important in your life. In that moment, you need the good water, you need the good fertilizer. Okay, understand? Just before she touched the door, the wife touched the kitchen door. We need good water, good fertilizer. Then if she opened the door, the husband say, Oh honey, I love you, give me a hug. She has to choose the right seed when she opened the door. Okay? And, just before you die, you must choose the right seed. Okay? 8th and 9th again, 8th and 9th. This is in the Wheel of Life. We call baby desire. This is link number 8. It's at 8 o'clock. It's called baby desire. Small desire. He's eating probably round youtiao. Very ancient youtiao. Nowadays, the youtiao is long. In the ancient time, the youtiao is round. Okay? I'm thinking, after I translate Nagarjuna, I will finish in four years. Then I'm going to write a history of youtiao in the whole world. This is most interesting. Okay, so we call baby desire. Baby desire. Now, let's look at number 9 Sugeng. That's number 10. Okay, here's number 9. This is called advanced desire. Strong desire. Okay, and it's a monkey. Don't forget the artist is ten years old, okay? I don't know. The monkey looks like ... Okay, I almost said somebody's name, but I control myself. Okay. I mean, it doesn't really look like Stanley. Okay. But, number 9, strong desire. Okay, so now, you can understand the jing. Only if you understand the Wheel of Life, you can understand this page in the Lam Rim. So, here's the Lam Rim. JI LTAR BDEGS PA NI LUS DI DANG BRAL BAR DUS MNYAM DU DAG TE LUS DI LA ZAD PA DANG LEN PA NI TZAM YAS TU RKYEN RTZA BA'ANG BDOD PA SOGS SO He says, how to pick the karma in the moment of the death. Two steps. Number 8 and number 9. Okay, baby desire and strong desire. Okay, now listen. And tonight is very important, okay? Everybody in this room, we are going to make this trip. Not Harbin. To death. Okay? Each one of us, we will make this trip. Then you have to know what to do at the airport. Geshe-la, where do I go? Where do I get my ticket? Where do I check my suitcase? Before you get to the airport, you need to get some help. Okay? Don't wait until you're in the airport. Listen. In the moment that you die, even if you study many years, it's the most frightening moment of your life. If you don't believe me, go to the top of a tall building with your friend. Okay? You stand on the edge of the roof. You have them hold your shoulder. One, two, three. Then have them go like this. Then you will go, ah! You will fight. Human nature, nobody likes to die. My brother killed himself when he was young. Geshe-la, he wasn't afraid of death, right? No, he's more afraid than other people. He's so afraid he killed himself. It's the most crazy moment in your life. It's too late to study the jing on the last day of your life. Because you are very scared. So, study now. On the beach in Bali. Take a swim. Have a big breakfast. Sit on the beach. Relax. Study how to die. Okay? Understand? It's a good time. Don't wait for the last day. In Tibetan, there's a famous expression. RGYAGS PA MA BO GONG LA SANGS RGYUD MA THAN When you get to the Bali program, when you come to the first class, before you walk in the class, do some research. Where is the toilet? Okay? Don't wait until the break. In the break, you have to go very bad. You cannot think. Before you have to go to toilet bad, find out where's the toilet. Before the day that you die, ten years before, twenty years before, fifty years before, find out how to die. How to pick the good seed. Okay? What is number eight? What is number nine? [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] So, I'm going to finish those two and then we'll take a break. Why? We should finish before the break. I have a Russian friend. I love her very much. She went to the toilet in the Moscow airport. She didn't see they washed the floor. She fell down. She broke her leg very badly. Went to the hospital. Long operation. But success. Okay? What am I talking about? Maybe you will die in the toilet tonight. Okay? So, let's ... before the break, let's finish how to choose the seed. Just in case. Understand? Okay? Okay. Before the break. Okay, so how to choose the seed? This book is wrong. This book is Abhidharma system. Lower system. Okay? In this about death, about picking the seed, they explain number eight and number nine simple way. Because many people in the audience at that time were farmers. And the cow herder. Okay, so he made simple for them. But we're going to go deeper. Okay? We're going to go deeper. So, first I'll give you the farmer system. Simple explanation. Then we're going to go to the advanced explanation. In Sugeng's book. Okay, so here we go. ,'DI LTAR BDE PA NI, ,LUS TE DANG BRAL BAR DU, ,GNYENG DU THAG STE LUS TE LA ZAD PA, No, no, drink, drink, drink. Two things make the seed ready to open when you die. Number eight and number nine. Number eight, the guy is eating the round youtiao. Number nine, the monkey is very, very working hard for the fruit. The lower explanation, right here, what is beginning desire? You, in that moment, you're like, oh, oh, I need my body. I need my body. Okay? I have to keep this body. Okay? Then that scared feeling, it chooses the seed. Okay, got it? That's number eight. Okay, I'll say it again. You make 160 billion seeds in your life. We are talking about choosing one at the end of your life. And most people, when they are dying, strong klesha, desire, oh, oh, I need this body, I need this body. I don't want to die, I don't want to die. Then they pick you. Then, that's klesha. You will pick a bad seed. Okay? Somebody asked the Buddha, after die, how many people come back to human, how many people animal and hell? Buddha didn't answer. He go like this. Sometimes he don't talk, he just ... It means on your hand, there's a little bit of dust. Then there will be a few pieces of dust here. It means that many people become human again. Then Buddha went like this. All the dust in the whole planet, that many people, animal. This many people. Everybody say, oh Geshe-la, next life. I'd like to be born in Shenzhen. They have a good economy right now. Forget that. If you are born human, you are very, very, very lucky. Okay? 99.9999999% going to animal. Going to hell. Okay. Why? When they choose the seed, I need this body, I need, I need. Then die. Strong desire. Then die. Then it chooses the wrong seed. That's beginning desire. What's advanced desire? Then some thought will come in their mind. It's the last conscious thought. After that, in the Bible, no conscious thought. You forget who you are. Your last conscious thought in this life, cold. I feel cold. Why? Your body is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. It's warm. Whole life. Then when you die, temperature drop a lot. Then you feel cold. So, last, last, last thought for most people. I feel cold. I wish I could have some hot place. Understand? Very dangerous last thought. Very dangerous last conscious thought. I feel cold. Because body is actually getting cold. And you think, you think, oh! First, two thoughts at the end, okay? Two, two, two picker thoughts in the lower system. Okay? Here we go. Oh, oh, I lose my body. I'm going to lose my body. I feel cold. I hope I go to a warm place. Then, that's the last conscious thought. Then you go to bardo, okay? And you're not thinking much, okay? Okay, got it? Those last two thoughts, they pick the karma. Then those are very dangerous. Oh, oh, I lose my body. Ah, cold. Then, last thought. Then that will choose the wrong seed. So, we don't want to be, We want to be this one. How to do that? Okay? Then you have to wake up your good seeds. Okay? Very, very conscious. Wake up your good seeds. $500. And we take a break also. I don't know what's better, the break or the $500. $500. Wait, I didn't ask the question yet. Did I ask the question? Okay, here's the question, here's the question. We don't, we don't want to die like that. That's like you are going crazy at the airport. Okay? You don't know where's your luggage. You don't have a ticket. You're going, Ah, where's my ticket? Where's my luggage? You're going to have a bad trip. Okay? Now, what's the good thought for dying? Okay? What's the good thought for dying? I just want two words, two words. Long story is a wrong answer. Teacher! Nah. It's pretty good, it's pretty good. Buddha. Buddha. Same thing. Emptiness. [Speaker 2] Emptiness. [Speaker 1] Ah, come on, one guess, one guess. Okay. What's a ... two words. Emptiness, seed. Emptiness, seed. By the way, I'm in the lower school. Any school, any school. Now listen, I'll give you a clue. And I'll still give you $500. Okay? I'll give you a clue. The goal in that moment is to put water on your good seeds. Who said? [Speaker 2] Coffee meditation. [Speaker 1] Who said? Where? Where? $500. $500. $500. Woo, woo, woo! Okay, understand? Coffee mingshang. Coffee meditation. Why? You are going to the big sleeping. You are going to the final sleeping. You got to put water on your good seeds. Don't say, oh, I'm cold. Oh, I lose my body. Eh, shut up. Shut up. Okay? We want a good thought. We want coffee mingshang. My teacher taught me. I said, Rinpoche, I'm afraid of dying. I'm afraid of dying. He said, no need. You can practice dying every night before you sleep. Then you're ready! It's the same. Make a habit every night. Coffee mingshang. Oh, today I did some good thing. You know, me and Stanley played a song for all the people. Okay, tonight when I sleep, I have to think about the good thing I did. And think about the good thing you saw other people doing. Listen. Jasmine, and I met her parents today. They are very nice people. Thank you for coming. Thank you for having the baby 25 years ago. 26? Okay, now listen. She worked with a 300 people team for one year to get the Bali ready for us. She's the most rich person in this room. She's the Warren Buffet of karma seeds. Okay? Now, if you do coffee mingshang on a good person, you get 10%. That's not ... I didn't say that. This Jin said that. Okay? Warren Buffet has 80 billion dollars. Jasmine has 80 billion good seeds from Bali retreat. If we get 10%, that's 8 billion free seeds! Okay? You don't have to do anything. She work, work, work. I'm not stupid. I get 10% on my bed. Very good. Much easier. Okay? Much easier. Okay? So, practice. Why we do this coffee mingshang every night? It's not just for good seeds, okay? We are preparing for death. And falling asleep and the mind going into bardo are very, very similar. So, practice every night. My teacher made me promise. Mike. He call me Mike, he don't call me Geshe Mike. Hey Mike, you promise me every night coffee mingshang. Two kinds. Number one, what good thing you did today? Number two, what great thing other people did? Do the 10% meditation. He said, please Mike, don't forget. Oh, why? Why? Because I want you to die successfully. Okay? You will have a habit coffee mingshang. This is the choosing, okay? That's the real choosing, okay? So, how to prepare for death? Starting tonight. Every night. Okay? Beginning tonight. Okay? You must do coffee mingshang. It's not just for successful business. It's not just for to find a nice husband or wife. It's preparation for the big lottery on the last day of your life. Okay? Make a habit every night before you go into the darkness. Think about the good things you did. Steal the 10% from Jasmine. Okay? Every night. Now listen, we're going to take a break.
