[Speaker 1] So we have the quotation by Nagarjuna, Master Nagarjuna. And Je Tsongkapa, sorry, Pabongka Rinpoche used it to explain what Joe did to get you here. Now, he's going to quote Sher Chin Do Dupa Lek Kyang, Sher Chin Do Dupa Lek Kyang. Those of you who came to Sedona for the three days study about the structure of all Buddhism, you know there are many sutras called Prajnaparamita. Perfection of Wisdom Sutras. 100,000 verses. 25,000 verses, which is called the 20,000 verses. And there's an 8,000 verses. There's a 700 verses, which is also called Jinkanjin? Heart Sutra. There are many. So he quotes the shorter one. Why does he quote another book to explain the correlations? Why does he have to do it twice? Huh? What was it? No, same correlations. [Speaker 2] Basically. [Speaker 1] Yeah, good. He says, you don't believe me? Listen to Nagarjuna. You don't believe Nagarjuna? How about Buddha? Okay, this is a good system. He says, you don't believe me? Then listen to Nagarjuna. You don't believe Nagarjuna? Then listen to Buddha. It's a good system. So he quotes, CHIN GYIS DON DOR DOR DU MED NGO BO DANG, MI KHON GYI'I PHUNG TE'I THAL BA BDAG TU GNYIS It means the second perfection will help you to get a good equipment, body and mind. You won't have to be an animal. And you won't have those eight problems. Like you live in a country where they don't allow Dharma or something like that. So he doesn't give seven correlations, he only gives one. Just for the second one. Why does he start with the second one? Let's go to the sutra. Okay? So this is not in your translation. We are going to the old sutra. Because your Joe created your John. Okay? Okay. So I went to the sutra 18,000 verses and I got you all the correlations from there. Ready? We're going deeper. You didn't even ask me. DBYIN PA'I SDUG BSNGAL GYUR PA'I SEMS CAN YONG MIN BYED So this is all from the sutra. I added it from the sutra. Giving ripens suffering beings. Giving makes suffering beings ripe. It makes them mature. Ready to give deeper things. Like if an apple is on a tree, if you pick it too soon, it doesn't taste good. You have to let it become ripe. So the purpose of giving, and the purpose of teaching giving, is just to get people ready for higher things. Do you remember why Buddha said you should teach giving first? You should teach people how to make money first. Why? That's how you attract them. You attract them. When I teach Buddhism, 80 people come. In Mexico City, four or five days ago, we taught money. 800 people came. So first you have to teach about, you want to be successful? Try this seed thing. It's just to get people ready for the real thing. Who said that? Buddha. Here. He didn't even say, giving is to get money. He didn't say that. Teaching people about giving is just to get them ready to teach them something deeper. Just to attract them. Okay, second one. PHYIM GYI SDUG BSNGUR RTOG BA DU MED NGO BO DANG MI KHON BSKYED PO'I DE'I BRTAL DU BDAG TU GNYED That's the line we already had in the book. I don't have to talk about it. That's the one that Pabongka Rinpoche used. Third one. GZOD PAS GZUGS BZANG DANG PA RGYA CHEN THOB GYUR TE ZAN DOG SDUG CING RDO BA'I LTA BA'I US SU RGYUR If you don't get upset, GZUGS BZANG DANG PA you will be the most beautiful person around. RGYA CHEN THOB And it will last for a long time. ZAN DOG SDUG means your face will even shine a little bit like gold. SDUG means... What's SDUG BSNGAL mean? Suffering. But SDUG here... Let's do a dictionary entry. We're going to talk about SDUG. And SA DAG LTA DAG SHES KYI SDUG PA SDUG SDUG SDUG BSNGAL means suffering. But SDUG PO means beautiful. So be careful when you're translating. You don't want to say if you are patient, you are going to suffer. If you are patient, you will look sexy. SDUG CING RDO BA'I LTA BA'I US SU RGYUR means people will enjoy looking at you. If you wear a nice suit or something, or a nice dress, and you do all your makeup, then you walk in the room, and everybody's like... Okay, watch. Okay? Like that, people check you out. That's LTA BA'I US SU RGYUR. People will enjoy to check you out. Okay. It's cheaper than Lancôme. Okay. GZON RU GYIS NI, SKAR PO YON TAN GROD MIN GYUR If you have fun doing Dharma, nothing can stop you from getting all your dreams. And YESHI THA YAS Your mind will also expand to like Buddha's mind. And BANG RDZO NYE BAR GYUR You will find a BANG RDZO. We did it yesterday. You can tell me what a BANG RDZO is, because... What's his name? SKA'ONG? SKA'ONG? SKA'ONG? Who was the dragon in The Lord of the Rings? Smog. Smog was lying on a BANG RDZO. Huge treasure of gold coins. BANG RDZO is a huge treasure of gold coins. You will have the RGYAL BA'I BANG RDZO. What's a RGYAL BA? Yeah, like kings, okay? RGYAL BA'I BANG RDZO. So BANG RDZO can also mean the people that the king controls. So you have to understand something. There's... I got to show you something. Okay, in the old days, to be the president of the country or something like that, it was different. A king in the old days is not elected, not by the Communist Party or the legislation of the China or from the American Congress. It's not elected. To be the king in India means you own everything and everybody. Nobody has any rights. If you like some guy's wife, the king can say, give me your wife. Give me your house. [Speaker 2] Like that. [Speaker 1] Or you're going to work in my kitchen from now on. Okay, not like nowadays. Obama, Obama. Okay, me and Stanley, we have a new idea to stop international tension. The president should change every four years. So Obama should be president of China and America for four years. And then President Xi should be the president of America and China for four years. Then no problem. So this is Obamao. Obamao. Okay, anyway. So if you have fun doing your Dharma, then you can become like a really ... people will listen to you. This is very interesting, okay? So a lot of people came to me and said, my husband doesn't listen to my suggestions. I'm sure it was only that one person who has this problem. Husband doesn't listen to my suggestions. In this system, if your husband doesn't listen to your suggestions, okay, I'll give you two choices. I'll give you three choices. First option. Talk to him. Reasonably. Just explain. You know, you never listen to my suggestions. Sometimes I have good suggestions. And I think if you just try for a few days, you will find my suggestions pretty good. That's the first method. Second method. Angry silence. He's like, you want to go to the restaurant? Especially before going to bed. Hey, you want to ... I have a headache today. So there are two ways. These are the old ways. To get your husband to listen to you. One is, you know, reach out. Have a discussion. You know, I really think you should listen to mine. Second method. Ignore him. Whatever he suggests, just ignore it. Fight back. Show him how it feels. Okay? These are two different systems. Okay? Old way. They don't work. Why? They don't work all the time. Okay? If something works, it works all the time. When you buy a new car, if it only starts every three days a week, it doesn't work. Okay? So what's the Buddhist way to get your husband to listen to your suggestion? Have more fun with your practice. Don't talk to him. And don't ignore him. Okay? It's not coming from him. It's coming from you. Have more fun. With everything. Be more excited. And then without talking, and without ignoring, from his own side, he will change. Okay? That's the Buddhist system. BSAM DANG KYIS NI SGRUB PA'I YIN TE MED PAR DOR If you learn to meditate, you won't waste your time swimming in the objects of your senses. Like eating potato chips all day. Okay? Like that. Or listening to bad music all day. Some people put on the music all day, or they put on the television all day. How many hours average does an American person watch television every day? Five. Average. Five hours. It's unbelievable. It makes your mind stupid. I don't know which is worse, marijuana or TV. I don't know. Yeah, they're both ... Oh, yeah, that's worse. Put them together. Okay. So, if you meditate, your mind will get clear. And you don't feel like eating like ten donuts or something. If everybody in China meditates, Khandaji will go bankrupt. I'm always thinking, how to stop Khandaji in China. Khandaji means KFC chicken. I should write them a letter or ... But it's not their fault, it's our fault. If nobody buys it, they will have to leave China. Okay. SNGON PAR BSHAD PA If you meditate a lot, you can start to see the future. It doesn't start with the lottery numbers for next week. If you meditate a lot, you start to have ... you call it instinct. You call it a feeling about the stock market or something. My stepmother meditates every day. She's like 90. And she does yoga every day. I was at her house recently and she said ... I was visiting her and she said, I'm leaving. I said, I just flew here to see you. She said, yeah, but I have to leave. I said, where are you going? I have to go do my yoga. I said, you're doing yoga? Honey, I'm doing yoga for 30 years. [Speaker 2] Every day. [Speaker 1] I said, how did you start yoga? You taught me. I forgot. I taught her one time then she kept doing it for 30 years. I didn't know. Then the same with meditation. Then she was a school teacher. So she's living on school teacher's retirement money. And my real mother who died, she was also a school teacher. One day we were sitting in the kitchen and the garbage truck came by the house. Picked up the garbage. Those guys, they work hard, they're very tired and they smell bad for about 24 hours a day. Then she said, I want to tell you something. That garbage man makes more money than a school teacher in Arizona. But my stepmother, she's always giving people money. She's one of the main sponsors for Diamond Mountain. Then I asked her, how are you getting all this money? You're just a school, retired school teacher. How are you getting all this money? I played a stock market. I didn't know you were playing a stock market. Yeah, I put all my money, teacher's retirement money, I put it in the stock market. Then she said recently there was a new company starting the stock market. And I bought many, many of their stocks. Then I said, what's the name of the company? I'm thinking maybe I should buy it. She said, I don't remember. I bought it like 30 years ago. Something like Apple? Apple? Apple Company? She bought Apple Company stock in the beginning. Now she's always giving money already. $20,000, $10,000, you know? Then I said, how did you know to buy Apple? In the first few years. She said, I don't know. I was just meditating and I get some feelings. I hear something like Apple, Apple. Okay, I check in the newspaper. Oh, Apple's company. Okay, so if you meditate a lot, it's not like you can see the number of the lottery next week. But you just get some good feeling when you see Apple stocks. And you buy it. So you can get... ngun she means abhijna in Sanskrit. It means you can see into the future with your feelings. Then you do the next cool thing just before everybody else. And maybe you yourself don't understand why. But it's because you're meditating every day. Okay. TING ZIN LON PAR GRUB So you will get very deep meditation. SHES RAB GYIS NI CHOS KYI RANG BZHIN YONGS SHES NAS And the sixth perfection, you will learn to... you will learn the nature of the pen. KHAMS SU MA LUS PA LAS YANG DAG BDAG BAR GYUR And you will get freedom from suffering life. Then there's a word called samsara. It means a suffering... circle of suffering. Then all the Buddhist people, they don't understand what it means. I want to be free from... When their boss yells at them, they come home and tell their husband, I want to leave samsara. Then they think, this is samsara and there's another place called Nirvana and they should leave samsara like leaving Jalisco and going to... Sayulito. Sayulito or something. It's not a different place. Your company is not samsara and your company is not Nirvana. Your boss is not a bad guy and your boss is not a Buddha. Okay? Understand, right? Okay, so you can leave samsara, but maybe you will be working in the same company. But the boss will be a Buddha. My boss in the diamond company was very suspicious. Sometimes he acted just like Yamantaka. That means your seeds are getting good. I work many hours a day. I come home, then Lama teaches me many hours. Then after a few years, I start to get confused. My boss says something, I say, okay Lama. Lama says, go do this. I say, okay, offer. That's my boss's name. Yeah, I get confused. Who's the Lama? Who's the boss? If your seeds are good, you are free from samsara. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Alright, now we're going back to the book. GSUNGS PA LTAR TSUL KHRIMS RNAMS PAR BDAG PA'I ZHES GSUNGS RJIM PA SOGS KYI MTHOGS CHE Now we have a new subject. I'm going to introduce it to you with the DCI language. You can learn French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, DCIEs. [Speaker 2] DCIEs. [Speaker 1] It's a different language. I'll give you the language. In DCI, how do you get a boyfriend or girlfriend? Okay, I'll ask you a question. If you don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend, okay, and you want one, should you check on the internet or should you go to the nightclub? Which one? No, what's the what's the DCI language for this? Yeah, diamond deal. Don't diamond deal me. You want a yellow diamond that has no spots? Or you want a white diamond with spots? Which one? Okay, then you have to say, I want a white diamond with no spots. Okay, so you don't find a boyfriend on the internet because that boy will be a nerd. And he will love his laptop more than you. And you don't find a boy in a nightclub because he's the kind of boy who goes to nightclubs. To think the boy is going to stop going to the nightclub the night after you meet him at the nightclub is stupid idea. Okay, so where do you find a boyfriend? In the nursing home. Then everybody says, but Geshe-la, I want a young one. No, you don't understand. You have to plant the seed for a boyfriend. Then you don't have to find a boyfriend. You just plant one. Then relax. He will come. Visit lonely people. Plant the seed. He will come. Then you know that. I don't have to tell you that. The question is, does it matter how you feel about the old person you visit or will it work anyway? If you really care about the old lady's happiness or you're just using her. Okay, two choices, right? Number one, you go to the nursing home only because you want a boyfriend. You really don't care about the old lady. Second choice, you go to the nursing home to find a boyfriend with great love for that old lady. So, first person is going just to get a boyfriend. Motivation is selfish. They don't care about the old lady. They're just using her. Will they get a boyfriend or not? That's my question. Yeah, they will. If the world is bigger than the pen and you let go of the pen, it will fall down. It won't fall up. Then if you help a lonely person, you will get a boyfriend and nobody can stop it. God, Buddha, cannot stop it. Karma is more powerful than Buddha. But, the boyfriend which you get will be selfish. He will use you the way you used the old lady. He will use you for sex, for money. He will use you. Did you get a boyfriend? Yes. The seed of visiting the old lady grew a boyfriend. But the seed of being selfish when you visited the old lady created a selfish boyfriend who used you. Why are we talking about that? Because the next subject in the lam rim is how to manage multiple seed accounts. You must learn to manage multiple seed accounts. You have to manage the boyfriend account and you have to manage the selfish account. You have to plant some boyfriend seeds in this bank and then you have to plant some unselfish seeds in this bank and together they will make a nice boyfriend. This is a basic principle of karma. My lama, we had a bochito, okay? You know bochito? Old little Volkswagen. In English they call what? Volkswagen bug. Beetle. Bug. It's a bug. Then that was our first car. When we got it, it had 250,000 miles on it. It reached almost 350. That's a long story. Anyway, one day it blew up on the highway. It started on fire. Then he has one rich guy student. Then he said, okay, you buy a new car. Then we went to the ... he and me, we never bought a new car. Then we go to the car dealer and he said, okay, what kind of car you want? Buick. Which one? Skylark. What color you want? Monk red, of course. What kind of tires you want? Not fancy, okay, just normal. What kind of radio? I'm like, tell him stereo. Then my lama's like, we don't want a radio. I'm like, no, we don't want a radio. We're not allowed to listen to music. Then I'm like, you know, then the guy says, we don't make cars without a radio. Then I'm like, they don't make cars without a radio. Then my lama's like, I don't want a radio. Take the radio out. So they have a car ready for us. They sent it back to the factory. He paid extra to take out the radio. I hated this car. [Speaker 2] Yeah. [Speaker 1] Then, so when you're, when you want a boyfriend, make a list. Okay, I want handsome. How do you get a handsome boyfriend? Don't get upset at people. He should have a job and making good money. Be generous. Okay? He should be peaceful. Meditate more. Okay? Like that. You know the shopping list now, okay? The point is, the seeds are all different. You have beautiful boy, handsome boyfriend account. Smart boyfriend account. Obedient boyfriend account. He does what you want. How do you get that one? Quick, quick, quick. Yeah, be happy about your practice. Understand? Okay? He will listen to you wash the dishes. Yes dear. Okay, like that. So you make your shopping list. Then you have to manage all of these seed accounts. Each quality you want in the boyfriend, you have to plant different seeds. Why are we talking about this? We are not studying how to make a boyfriend. We are studying how Joe created you. So Joe was a very great businessman. He had many karma accounts. He made you, he gave you things, money. He gave you happiness. He gave you pretty good looks. He gave you people cooperate with you. He gave you peace. He gave you freedom. He gave you the glue which brings it all together into Bao or into Laura. Okay? Okay? So that's what we're going to talk about now. You have to learn to do, to make the shopping list of things you want. Your new car means your new boyfriend. Or your new business partner. [Speaker 2] You know? [Speaker 1] Or I don't know, the people in your Dharma group. Your yoga student. You can design them. And then you have to keep track of each account. SUTRUM RNAM PAR BDAG PA'I ZHIG GSUNGS We start with being nice to people. Because we want to be happy with this person. BDIN BYIN SOGS KYIS DROG BYED What's DROG PO mean in Tibetan? Yeah, friend. So that perfection of being nice to people, it needs, how do you say it in Spanish? Buddies. It needs buddies. Compas? Compas? [Speaker 2] It needs compas, amigos. [Speaker 1] Each perfection needs compases. Okay? You can't just do morality. Otherwise you will have a happy life and you're broke all the time. So, DROG BYED Companos? Amigos, compas. You have to have all of them together, joined together. SMON LAM CI MA MED PA MA LTA'ANG MTSAN GYIS PAR GZHAN PA'I GRI MI MA SGOS PA Then you have to make a little bit for dessert on all of those seeds to make the boyfriend handsome, intelligent, has a job, listens to what you want, affectionate, gives you a hug when you want, doesn't give you a hug when you don't want. Okay? To plant that boyfriend, you should also make a prayer. And it means you don't want a boyfriend who dies and then the whole thing's finished. You should create a boyfriend who lives after death. If you're going to work so hard to plant a boyfriend, then put the extra dessert and we should be boyfriend and girlfriend forever, many lifetimes. Okay, so don't just work so hard to get your new car and then the car breaks, dies. With a special prayer, SMON LAM, you can go beyond this one life. So Buddhist people, we are a little bit, what do you call, we look ahead. Is it bad to have a boyfriend until you die? No, it's nice. But why not have a boyfriend who lasts longer than that? If you're going to plant so many seeds to plant a boyfriend who does what you tell him to do, why not make him longer? Otherwise you have to start over again every time. So, SANGS SBYAR BA BYED means make a plan like that from the beginning. Don't look for a boyfriend who's going to get old and die. Plan one who's going to last for many, for all your lifetimes. And it's cool. You're like, I'll meet you when we're sixteen. I'll meet you again next time when we're sixteen. Okay, see you then, bye. And then it's fun. YANG RGYUD PA DANG YANG GZUGS KYI MA BSRUNG NA LUS SKYE BA DANG What happens to a person who is generous but isn't nice to other people? You become a honey thing, you become a wealthy and powerful person in a lousy place. He gives example of LUS. What's LUS? Yeah, like a water dragon or something like that. They are very powerful, extremely wealthy, and they're animals. So you have to manage your seeds carefully. If you're very generous but you lie all the time, you will become a rich person who's surrounded by lousy people. There's two ways to be rich. One is rich people and all around them are lousy people, creepy people, greedy people. Like you hear about rock and roll stars like that or something. They become very famous. But all around them, like I saw a movie about the Beach Boys, and that guy became very famous, but his friends cheated him. They put him in the mental hospital and they stole his money. So if you are very generous but you don't keep your morality, will you get rich? Yeah. But you'll be surrounded by bad people. Which is better? Be rich or be surrounded by nice people? The DCI answer is always the same. I'll take both. Okay. Like the guy says, do you want cake or do you want ice cream? I think I'll take the cake with the ice cream on top. You want to be rich or you want to have a lot of good friends? I think I'll take both. Well, then you have to be generous. Share everything you have and keep your morality. TSUL KHRIMS Now he's talking about the opposite. TSUL KHRIMS GSUNGS YANG SBYIN PA MA STANGS What's it mean? Nick, Adam, anybody. TSUL KHRIMS GSUNGS Yeah, you protect your morality, GSUNGS, but SBYIN PA MA STANGS You don't give. Then what will happen? Yeah, you'll be nice. You'll have lots of friends and everybody's broke. Okay, sound familiar? RANG BYAG DANG DAG MA BTAG MA BYAS PA NA MA BTAG MA BYAS PA Okay, say MA BTAG MA BYAS PA Those of you who want to go deeper in emptiness, this is a very important word. MA BTAG MA BYAS PA Say MA BTAG MA BYAS PA MA BTAG MA BYAS PA MA BTAG MA BYAS PA Does the pen exist? Is it an illusion? Yes or no? Is it an illusion? Is it real? Then I always tell people, who says it's not real, come up here, I'll give you a mustache. Only one person did that in 40 years of teaching, only one person came up. Of course they were in Florida. From Florida. I don't know, Florida people are... Okay, it's real. MA BTAG MA BYAS PA If you don't look too close, okay? MA BTAG MA BYAS PA MA BTAG means you don't check. Check it, you don't check it. MA BYAS PA means you don't examine too much. You know? Does this pen exist? Yeah, I mean, generally it exists. If you don't check it, it's just a pen. But then you study emptiness, go deeper, when the dog goes out, when the people go out, now we are BTAG BYAS, now we are checking. Then at that time, what is it? Yeah, she gave a good answer. It's like, it's nothing yet. All right? So MA BTAG MA BYAS PA means don't go too deep. TSUL KHRIMS TZAM DO KHA PO BYED KYANG NGOS SOGS PO DGE BZHIN ZHIG GI SDOM PA YOD DU SDUG BA MIN DU SDUG BA YOD DU SDOM PA MIN DU BYAS MA BA LTAR LAS PAR DAG NA BLO DE ZING NGES BA'I TSUL KHRIMS NA PHYI KHYANG GSOS MO KUN TE Hang on a second. SEMS RGYUD NUS MONGS DANG BYAS KYIS SDIG PA GANG ROL LAS MED CING SEMS LA, okay, good. TSUL KHRIMS TZAM DO KHA PO BYED KYANG If somebody asks you, are you a pretty good person? Do you keep your morality pretty good? Then almost everybody will say, you know, I'm not perfect. But I'm pretty good. Then NGOS SOGS PO DGE BZHIN ZHIG There was a Mongolian Geshe. He said, SDOM PA YOD DU SDUG BA MIN DU There's people who have vows but not ethics. And then there's people who have ethics but not vows. Okay, it means some people took many vows. There are monks, bodhisattva vows, tantric vows, lots of vows, but they're not keeping them. Then there's other people, didn't take any vows, but they're acting good. I took a group to a foreign country last year. Some of the group was Buddhist students who I taught for many years. Some of the group were people who never studied Buddhism. Some of the Buddhist students gave me a lot of problems. The non-Buddhist people behave perfectly. Okay, understand? Okay, so that's what he's talking about. Sometimes you have people with lots of vows. And they are misbehaving. Then you have other people never heard about Buddhist vows. They are treating everybody nice. They are behaving good. SDUG SMRA BA'I MED PAR DAG NA BLO DE ZHING ZIN GYI BA'I So most of us, we feel pretty good about our morality. TSUL KHRIMS NA BYED KYANG GSUNG BA KUN TE But, it's rare to find a person who really keeps even one of the ten Buddhist ways of behavior. Didn't kill anything. It means never ate meat or eggs or milk. What do they do with the chicken when they get too old to lay eggs every day? They become dog food. Sell the can. What, you think they send them to a retirement home? What happens to the cow when they don't give enough milk? Sell for dog food. So, you know, it's hard to be pure. Completely pure in your morality. If we use those things, then actually we're killing we are responsible for the death of many animals. First they take off their skin. Why? To make shoes and belts. In India it's illegal, I mean it was illegal until recently, until Khandaji came to eat meat. What's the largest exporter of leather in the world? What country? Check it out, India. Then you ask Indian people, how come you can be world's largest exporter of leather but you don't eat meat? I don't know. Okay? All right. So it's hard to find a person who can keep all those ten perfectly. Never lie. It's your mother's birthday. She puts on a super ugly dress from when she was a kid. And she says, how do I look? Great. It's hard to be completely honest. And sometimes you shouldn't be. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] Listen, listen, listen. SANG RGYUD NYON MONGS DANG BYAS RGYU DIG PA KHO NA LAS MED Inside our mind we are mostly having negative thoughts. Outside we are mostly hurting people. SANG SNGAGS DANG BYANG SEMS LA SOGS PA'I RTZA DU DANG NYE RJE SOGS KYI GRANGS KYANG LAS PAR MI SHES NA SU BA LTA CI MOD And there's another problem. All these people, they say, I want to take bodhisattva vows. How many bodhisattva vows are there? Sixty-four. Okay, and then lots of people say, Geshe-la, I want to take a tantra initiation. Do you want a $300 initiation? Or do you want the initiation you have to keep? Okay, $300 initiation, you can get it in a few hours. You know, the lama goes, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, and hit you on the head. Give the check to him. $300. That's it. Real initiation. Real tantra. These guys who did the tantric retreat three years in Diamond Mountain, they did seven years' study of the eighteen courses first. Then they did seven more years' study of tantra. Fourteen years. Then I allowed them to do a three-year retreat. Okay? LA SOGS PA'I RTZA STON NA NYE RJE So he says here, SU BA LTA CI MOD If some lama gives you that three-hour, $300 initiation, and doesn't even know you, didn't train you at all, and never taught you the tantric vows, just boom, okay, you have Tara initiation. SU BA LTA CI MOD How are you going to keep the vows? You don't even know what they are. There's many tantric vows. How many tantric vows? Huh? What? Anyway, it's a couple hundred. It takes years to study them. Then you just meet some lama you never met them before, they are giving initiation to 1,000 people. Ding, ding, ding, ding. You got Tara initiation. NYE RJE SOGS KYI GRANGS KYANG LAS PAR MI SHES NA They don't even know the vows. The essence of tantra is to keep the vows. Then how are you going to keep them if you don't know them? Okay, it takes time to learn them. No Geshe-la, I want initiation. I will come to Arizona and get initiation. I have two days off of work. I'm like, go away. If you have 14 years off of work, come and see me. Really, okay? Otherwise, it doesn't help you. There's no meaning. It irritates me. $300, three hour initiation. Okay, what time are ... Okay, I'm going to go for ten minutes and then I'm going to give you a break, okay? DE LTAR BRAL SPYOD THOB PA'I RGYUD MED PA LA BRAL BU YONG RGYUR RE BA NI PHYIS KYI BDUS SU RTOG GI SA BON THAB NAS STON DKAR NAS LEN RGYUR RE BA BYED PA DANG DRA So if you don't do the same hard work that Joe did, don't be disappointed if next life you don't get this equipment. PHYIS KYI BDUS SU RTOG GI SA BON THAB NAS If in the springtime, you plant the seed for what's that stuff called? White flower grows in the desert. Yeah, Datura. Datura. That's a Sanskrit name. There's a flower grows in Arizona called, it grows in the wild, it's called Datura. It's also called loco weed. Loco means crazy. Crazy weed. Because when you eat it, you go crazy. If a cow eats it by accident, they go crazy. And they like kill people or they'll run around, die. At Diamond Mountain we have this Datura. The flower is very beautiful. But don't eat it. Maybe that's what happened at Diamond Mountain. [Speaker 2] I don't know. [Speaker 1] So anyway, in the springtime, if you plant Datura, seed, then dum ka means in the autumn, in the fall, you are hoping to get barley or rice. Then you're just stupid. You've been planting Datura seeds all spring. Then in the fall you are saying, where's the rice? What's he talking about? Your whole life you hurt people. But in your mind you're like, oh, if I die I will be born probably in like Shanghai with a lot of money or something. But it's crazy to think like that. I'll give you a quotation. You tell me which sutra. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit. Neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. You will know the tree from its fruit. This is from Jesus. So don't plant Datura and expect to have an apple tree. It doesn't work like that. With karma you, unfortunately, you get exactly what you deserve. And there's no exceptions. You can't say, I want to plant a banana and get an apple. It's not going to work. One day I was studying in India with a lot of ... when I first went there, and my Lama, Geshe Ngo War Dargye, he got the room above all the other rooms. We can see the curtain, and he has the curtains closed all the time. Sometimes the curtains are moving. Then we can see him spying on us. This fortune teller came. These are like Indian poor people. And they wear long hair. They have bells. They are like, what do you call? Dreadlocks? Dread? Yeah, like a rasta. And then they'll say, Oh, you want to tell your future? So we are all 20 years old. You're like, yeah, tell our future. [Speaker 2] Tell our future. [Speaker 1] Then he sat down. He told us all of our future. Up above, I can see Geshe Dargye is watching. So he told me, your brother will live to be 84. You will live to be 86. Something like that. Actually, my brother died the next year. 21 years old. Then we went to the class the next day. Geshe-la, usually he's a very quiet and peaceful guy. Then he's in the middle of the book. He goes like this. He was teaching this book. 1973 20 years before Yo-hai was born. Something like that. And then he said, By the way, you want to know what's a definition of stupid? We're like, okay Geshe-la, what's a definition of stupid? Stupid means you pay some fake guy to tell your future. They were all like, he said, you waste your money. You don't need some guy to tell your future. If you are sharing everything you have, you will be rich. If you be nice to people, you will be happy. If you don't get upset, you're going to look beautiful. You don't need to ask some stupid guy and do, what do you call, I Ching or something. You don't need that. Your future will be exactly what seeds you are planting now. Then you can save a lot of money. When I go to China, maybe say, but I will tell your future. I said, thank you very much, but I don't need it. I can also tell my future. Just, am I keeping my vows or not? I'm watching you. Let's take a ten minute break. Pee-pee break, stretch break. Questions, anything. Any questions. Okay. The prayer. Microphone? Oh, I'll give you, really. Yeah. Some people ask me for the prayer to be with your partner beyond one life. I'll give it to you later. Okay, this week I'll give it to you. But Susana has to remind me, okay? Any other question? [Speaker 2] Just to make sure about Susana's question about partner, it's a relative question. Do you need to translate or no? [Speaker 1] Can you repeat, please? [Speaker 2] It's a question about partner. Yeah, you say that it takes a lot of good seeds to plant a partner, so it's better that it can last forever. So I was thinking there, but the point is that I need to make sure that I really can make a really good one, otherwise I'll be stuck with him in my future life. So how... [Speaker 1] So I was thinking that I really need to make one that's perfect, otherwise I'll be stuck with him in my future life. Is that the question? [Speaker 2] So, I'm thinking, is there anything, any prayer or anything you can teach us so that we can make sure that this one is the real one, our real partner that can stay together for many lifetimes, and just like Buddha, we can help many people. [Speaker 1] Thank you. Don't forget you can always upgrade to business class and first class. So, even if you create a partner but they're not perfect, and you make this prayer to be with them for many lifetimes, forever, you don't have to think I'm going to be stuck. In English we call it a lemon. Lemon means a lousy car. Okay, you don't have to worry you'll be stuck with a lemon for many lifetimes. Because you can fix them. You just adjust the seeds. Oh, I planted a boyfriend but he doesn't like to hug me. Then you don't have to find a new boyfriend. No. Just plant hug seeds and he will change. So, you don't have to... It's not possible for a Buddhist who understands the four steps to get stuck with a bad boyfriend. Like you buy a car and then you realize it's the wrong color. You just paint it. And same with a boyfriend. You can fix them. Usually we don't plant a perfect one right away. After three years you find out oh, this boy has this problem I didn't know about it when we got married. Then you just change the seed. In my experience, I'm lucky. I became a monk when I was 31 or something. So I had full high school girlfriend education. So I know many monks became monk when they are seven. They don't know anything about girlfriends. So I feel lucky. I had girlfriend education and I finished my university before I went to the monastery. So I have those training. So in my experience, for example, when the relationship is getting bad, you start talking about it more. All night you are talking with your partner to try to figure out what's wrong. In my experience, the first time you have all night talk about your relationship is the beginning of the end of the relationship. Then you talk for many nights then finally you break up. What I enjoy about this system is that to change your partner you don't have to tell them you are changing them. If the partner is coming from me, then I want to change them. I just have to change my seeds. To do that, I don't have to talk to them. So it cuts out all these conversations between couples which are collapsing. You just fix your... you start to fix your seeds. For me, you can always repaint the car. You can always repaint the car. It's up to Hero. Hero, try to pick the people who didn't get a chance. Okay, so it sounds like Joe was a better person than I am. So if he was so great, why didn't he get out of here? And if he didn't get out of here, how am I going to get out of here? Yeah, if you do these meditations correctly, you're supposed to start worrying about what you just said. You're supposed to think, wait a minute, Joe was a very unbelievably good person. Much better than me now. Then, how come he couldn't get me out of samsara? First question. Second question, if I'm much worse than him, then there's no hope. That's true. Then I asked my Lama this question. Joe was an unbelievably good person. Joe made me born in the wealthiest country in the world, where there's no Buddhist Lamas, not one, for 200 million people. But Joe sent me to the land of diarrhea, and I met my Lama. Like, Joe was unbelievable. So then I asked my Lama, you know, it feels like Joe was doing better than I'm doing. And so, I'm just messing up what he did. Then, what should I do? Then my Lama was very interesting. He said, well, yeah, you're going to go to hell. There was a joke in our sangha when the Lama gave us tantric vows. One lady complained, why do you give us tantric vows? If I break them, I'll go to hell. Then the Lama looked at her and said, you're going to hell anyway. When you get there, you'll be talking with the other hell people while you are screaming, and you'll say, how did you get here? I killed my mother. How did you get here? I stole all my father's money. Then you can say, I'm not like you guys. I got here from breaking my tantric vows. You can brag in the hell. But then what he told me was, you don't have choice. People tell me, I can't keep these vows, or this path is too difficult. My Lama just said, you don't have choice. You can suffer more, or you can try harder. It's up to you. No Lama can bless you and everything is okay. Listen. This is the next part of the text. SKAD CES BYAS SKAD GDIGS PA'I KYANG This is Shantideva. SKAD CES BYAS SKAD GDIGS PA'I KYANG RGAGS PA RNAMS NAS GSUNGS NA If one mistake sends you to the hell for countless years, THOG MA'I KHAR BAR BSLAG TU KYIS BSTAN DOR MI NYON DOR MO'I GCIG DGOS We've been making those bad deeds for a time with no beginning. Then how can we improve where we're going? GSUM PA LTAR BDE PA NA RE KYANG NGAN TSONG LDAN DRAG PHAN NA One big mistake in this life can throw you to animal or hell. RANG GI LA THOG MA MED PA'I SDU NAS SA PA'I SDIG PA'I PHUNG PO RGYAL PO SPANG CI MTHAR YOD PAS We have more bad deeds in our karma pocket from many lifetimes than George Soros has dollars. DIT TE MNGON NAS BDEN GROL THOG GI RE BA MED So how am I going to improve on my situation from lifetime to lifetime? Now comes the part. THAG PA RANG RES TZAM PAR LAM MA RIN PO BYAS GAR TIN NAS Oh, I have Gartun. What's Gartun? Yeah, Gartun is a special word. I like it. We don't have this word in English. I don't know in Chinese. One word means the kindness of your Lama. Say, ka, chin, ka chen. So here's ka chen, okay? They know ka chen because I wrote a book and I called the name ka chen. During my three year retreat, I wrote a book called ka chen. Because one of my greatest teachers was Catherine. An old lady named Catherine. Then I like to put my Lama's name on the book. So I call it ka chen. It's a pan. Pan. It has a double meaning. The book's name is Catherine. It means kindness of Lama, but it also means Catherine. So, rang re sangpa lama rungpo che karin le, if I'm staying with a good Lama, kyewa chi ma mikyun tsam shik, my next life should be pretty good. I hang out with a pretty good Lama. e nyong nyampa yod mo, You can think like that. But, rang gi chu ma chen na, if you don't do the Dharma which your teacher teaches you, lama rungpo che chi yang dze du me de, the teacher can't do anything for you. So you can't think, oh, the teacher blessing will save me, or something like that. I stayed with the teacher for a long time. I should be pretty safe. Did I tell you? I forgot what stories I told you. I used to fly to India a lot with my Lama, and I always feel safe on the plane. When I fly by myself, I think, oh, maybe this plane can fall down. But today, I'm sitting next to my Lama. I'm safe. The plane, sometimes it goes like that, right? Then I'm ready. That's okay, my Lama's right here. Then the lady came by the stewardess, would you like a newspaper, you know? I'm like, yeah, okay. New York Times. Here we call it, Herald Tribune. Special newspaper. Then I'm reading the newspaper. Today, terrorist attack. One terrorist put a bomb under the chair in the airplane. The bomb exploded. It made a hole in the side of the airplane. But the airplane landed safely. Except, one chair fell out, with one guy strapped in the chair. I realized, it doesn't matter, you sit next to your Lama on the airplane, actually. Maybe your chair fall out. Lama Rinpoche, CI YANG RDZAS DU MED DE If you don't practice, the Lama can't help you. Then he gives an example. GUC CHE LAS BRJAN GUC CHE means the brother of the Buddha. His name in Tibetan is LAS BRJAN. What's his name in Sanskrit? DE BA DA LTA DE BA DA LTA NYAL BAR GSUNGS PA When he died, he went straight to hell. SANGS RGYAS KYI SKYAB MA NUS PA The Buddha couldn't help him. He was born the brother of the Buddha. He lived near the Buddha his whole life. But he wasn't nice to people. Of course his brother wanted to help him. But when he died, he went to hell. But, if you have a lot of faith in your Lama, that karma is very powerful. If you think about your Lama, oh, I don't have to worry too much. My Lama promised to stay with me. That karma is so powerful, you don't have to worry. You won't go to some bad place. It's impossible. Even if the Lama is a stupid, lazy, not so nice person. If your faith is strong, and you believe in the Lama, that karma is extremely powerful. Then you don't have to worry about your future. Okay? Understand? Jesus, I like Jesus stories. They are very valuable. A blind man met Jesus. Then he said, you are a great Lama, please fix my eyes. And then Jesus said, do you believe I can do it? He said, yes, I believe. Then Jesus just goes, and he touched his eyes with his spit and some dirt. Then the guy's eyes opened, he can see. Then he's like, oh my God, thank you so much. Then Jesus said, I didn't do anything. You did it. How? You believe in me. Then that karma is very powerful. And you cured your own eyes. It's a nice, it's a true, also in Buddhism, same. Okay? So if you believe the Lama, if you have faith in the Lama, even if that Lama is lazy and not a very good person, the karma of your belief is enough to keep you out of the bad places. Okay. Long answer to a short question. Any other question? [Speaker 2] Yesterday, you said that Mexico was a free country. [Speaker 1] Yesterday, you said that Mexico was a free country. [Speaker 2] But I don't know, how can you say that there are being journalists who are being tortured or incarcerated. Encarcelados? [Speaker 1] Yes. I don't know why you can say that. There are many journalists who are being tortured, killed and incarcerated. [Speaker 2] Carmen Aristegui, for instance, she used to work in the national news broadcast, and only because she spoke about how the president illegally bought the White House, she was fired. [Speaker 1] And the parents of the 43 students who disappeared have no right to the truth. [Speaker 2] In Mexico, the ones who are free are the ones who have money or have white skin. [Speaker 1] That's freedom. Correct. So my question is, why did you say Mexico is a free country? When I said Mexico people have freedom, at that time when I said it, I'm thinking about two kinds of freedom. First one, you can travel inside Mexico anywhere you want to go. You don't have to get permission to go to León. If you want to move to León and live there, you can go. In some countries you're not allowed. Or if you say, I want to go to a Buddhist retreat in Amatitan, no one's going to put you in jail. So when I said free, I'm thinking of those two things. Is there a community of complete freedom here? No. Is there no corruption? Of course there's corruption. And we don't have freedom from that. So our freedom is not, in Mexico our freedom is not 100%. And America also. You can be different, but not too different. Okay. If you are too different, you will get in trouble. You can be a Buddhist, it's not illegal. But if you really practice strict Buddhism, some things you can get in trouble. I mean generally we have freedom of travel. And we have freedom to do what religion we want. Although we will get some social pressure if we are Buddhist or something. But I agree there's many kinds of freedom we don't have. Okay, another question? Thank you for taking my question. [Speaker 2] According to what I know, the way of the listener is someone that can understand the teachings and that can teach. But are unable to practice themselves. And I wanted to know what the cause of that was. And how do we know if one of us aren't our listener? [Speaker 1] Okay, good question. There's a, in Buddhism, there's a kind of Buddhist called the listener. In Tibetan it's called NYEN TE. In Sanskrit it's called Shravaka. Then there are strange people. They can go to the one week retreat in Amatitan. And when they get home, people say, what did the lama say there? Then they can say everything. The lama and the other teachers there, the other lamas, they taught 24 kinds of meditation. Then if you ask them, so, which meditation are you doing this morning? They'll say, I didn't have time. And actually, can you teach me the 24 meditations? I mean, I don't remember all of them, but there's this book I can show you. Which one are you doing today? Actually, I didn't have time today. You didn't have five minutes? Yeah, I didn't have five minutes. Okay, so it's possible there are people like that. Then the question was, what's the seed to be a person like that? Because I want to avoid that seed. So, there's a vow. It's a tantric vow or a bodhisattva vow? There's a tantric vow. I'll tell you one tantric vow. If you see someone breaking their vows, Dharma brother or Dharma sister, is it tantric or bodhisattva vow? I don't know. It's tantric. It's tantric. Then you're supposed to correct them. If you see, like, if you see your Dharma brother or sister is lying to somebody, then that vow says, you're supposed to say, hey, remember we aren't supposed to lie. And in the scriptures, how you tell them is very specific. Like, you're supposed to say two different things. Like, first one, look, I don't know for sure, but it looks to me like you are breaking your vow. That's the first one. Otherwise you can make a big mistake. So, you're supposed to say, look, I don't know for sure, but it looks like you're breaking your vow. Secondly, you're supposed to say, and it's true, I break that one all the time myself. So, look, I'm not a perfect person. I break my vows all the time. But it looks like you're breaking this vow. Then we have responsibility in Buddhism to try to help our Dharma, we call Dharma brother and Dharma sister. Out of love. Not jealousy, or anger. We're supposed to say, I love you, and I think you're breaking a vow. And I'm not Buddha, I cannot read your mind. Maybe you are Buddha, you are doing something special. I don't know. But it looks to me like you're breaking a vow. Then I break this vow a lot. I see my friends breaking vows, like they are drinking alcohol or something. My students. Then my Lama told me I make a big mistake. I don't clearly correct my students. Then I have a hard time to hear this from my ... my Lama tells me all the time, you know, you don't clearly correct your students enough. Then I ... if someone else tells me that, I'll just say, oh, it's my business. But when a Lama tells you, then you have to think about it. So I was thinking about it a lot. How come I don't correct my students very clearly sometimes? Then I realize it's because I want them to like me. And when you correct somebody, even your students, they don't like you. They get ... they get angry. And I don't want them to get angry at me, I want them to smile at me. If you tell a student every day, you are so great, then they will say, I love you Lama. Then if you try to correct them, they're like, I hate you Lama. I don't want to hear people say, I hate you Lama. But then I think about my Lama. He didn't say one good thing to me for 25 years. In my office in New York, I have a lot of Chinese people work with me. For many years they didn't know I'm a Buddhist monk. Then slowly they found out. Then one day they asked me, like five Chinese friends came to me, can we meet your Lamas? I don't like to mix my business life and my personal life. But they asked many times. Then I said, okay, you can come. They came to my monastery. Then we went to the famous kitchen where you sit before you meet the Lama. You know this kitchen? Then I said, look, before you go upstairs, I have to tell you something. In our company, I'm the big boss. Everybody thinks I'm a nice person. But in this monastery, if you ask my Lama, is Mike a good person? He will only say bad things about me. So, just get ready, you're going to hear some bad things. Then they went upstairs. I'm very nervous. What bad thing Lama going to say about me? Because for 25 years, he only tell me bad things. Mike, you are lazy. Mike, you are stupid. Mike, you didn't do anything correct. Then they came down. They're all smiling. I said, okay, what did he say about me? He said, you are the best student he ever had. Then I got angry. If he believes I'm the best student he ever had, why he call me stupid every day? Then finally I realized, he call me stupid because he loves me. And he's strong enough to have me hate him. A really good mother, sometimes they have to hit the kid on the bottom. Even though at that moment the kid won't like them. Then my Lama, he's strong enough, his love is strong enough to correct me all the time. To make me better. Push, push, push, push, push. It's never enough for my Lama. Pushing me. Then we don't do that with our friends, with our students. If I push them, they won't like me. If I speak honest to them about themselves, they won't like me. So I think that's the karma to become a listener. You are more worried about being blind than you are worried about helping people. So that's the seed. I think that's the seed. So have to be honest with your Dharma brothers and sisters. And if a Dharma brother or sister is honest to you, you have to thank them. Don't get angry. So that's the purpose of Dharma brother or sister. We can be honest with each other. And you don't get angry. They say, look, you're doing something that's not exactly cool. Then be graceful. Okay, I'll think about it. Thank you for trying to help me. Like that. It's difficult. When the Dharma brother or sister really loves you a lot, they won't tell you the truth about yourself. It's very difficult to see your own reflection. We need Dharma brother and sister to tell us, my lama is very honest to me. We went to sit in a cafe in Martan. Martan? It's a restaurant. And lama sat down, we sat down. Then somebody I know, by coincidence, they sat down next to us. Then we start to have breakfast together, me and lama. Then I'm like, oh lama, you know my TED talk in Vienna. It went very well. Everyone liked me. Everyone drank some wine. Lama is like this. Wait, wait, just stop. We are sitting here for half hour already. You didn't even say to me, how are you today? Or did you sleep well? For half hour, I didn't say one word. You told me about your TED talk for half an hour. Did you think maybe I want to say something also? Then this person I know is sitting next to us. Don't criticize me. My friend is sitting there. They are listening to you. I don't care. Stop talking, let me talk. If the lama doesn't love me, they will just be quiet. If you care about your Dharma brother or sister, in a Buddhist Sangha, we are supposed to have the power to give them suggestion honestly. And they are supposed to have the grace to say thank you for giving me suggestion. That's a rule of a Buddhist Sangha. Honesty more important than polite. And be graceful when someone gives you correction. The bodhisattva vows. BDAG DU GZHAN MOD PHYI NOR MI STER ZHING ZHAG KYANG MI NGAN The fourth one. BDAG DU GZHAN MOD means praise yourself. Criticize other people. PHYI NOR MI STER ZHING Don't give Dharma or money to the people who need it. ZHAG KYANG MI NGAN People give you correction and you say no, no, no, no, no. So you are also breaking a bodhisattva vow. So bodhisattva is supposed to be very ... the definition of bodhisattva very open to correction of their Dharma friends. Even your enemies, the people who don't like you, when they say something bad about you, there's always a little bit of truth inside. Almost always. 5%, 10%. 15%. It's true, 15% true, 10% true. A good Buddhist is very open to criticism. And they use it. Okay? Alright, let's stop there. It's 4.30 now. At 5 o'clock on the grass under the beautiful sky here, we will learn some Buddhist debating. It's very good for arguing with your husband. Okay. You can learn to think clearly. Give a good answer. Just come, okay? Don't be shy. It's fun. It's a lot of fun. So it will be here at 5 o'clock. At 6, or 6, we have a, 6 o'clock there's a special class in the other building. First aid class number two. Then Shantideva said a bodhisattva should learn everything. Like, I was in a car with three of the highest lamas in the world. My lama, do you know Lati Rinpoche? Yeah, great tantric lama. We were driving in India and the car broke. It's very unusual in India. And, you know, we all got out and we were going to an important ceremony. And the lamas are all dressed up with those special robes. And Lati Rinpoche said, told the driver, open the car. Then he looked at it, you know. He said, what does this thing do? That's a fan. What's this little box? That's a battery. It gives electricity to the car. He's a great debater. Super debater. So his mind is like computer, you know. Then he's like, the problem is right here. He never saw an engine in his life. Fix this thing. And he was correct. Okay, so Shantideva said, Buddhists should learn everything. Economics, finance, how to fix a toilet, how to make an enchilada, you know, Buddhist people are supposed to learn everything because everything you learn you can use to help people. So first aid is very useful for bodhisattvas. Tsongkapa studied medicine because Shantideva said bodhisattva should try to learn everything. And he did, and he became a great doctor also. Okay, so it's not a waste of time. And that will be in that other building. Then I have a request. For a couple of days, for music, we have to practice in here. Because we cannot put the drums in my room. It will explode everybody's head. So please don't come in during that time, okay? Okay, it's because it's like meditation. If somebody talking or or even if someone's sitting there, the musicians, we have to be, you know, we have to say bad things to each other. If there's three students watching, we cannot connect properly. Okay? It's not that we don't love you, we are making the music for you. But we want to play it when it's nice.
