[Говорящий 1] (0:00 - 1:51)
Okay, here we go. DE'I PHYIR Therefore, THEG SANGS RDOD DE RNAMS KYIS THU MI STONG BA BZHIN DU RDOD DE ... THEG SANGS means it's a very good word to know if you're learning, if you're going to go to the monastery next fall, if you're in the Guadalajara group.

Like Victor, or Ayrton, or Geronimo, okay, THEG SANGS means now this, now this, now, now, now this? RDOD DE means like an assembly in the sense of a congress. RNAMS KYIS means ...

THU MI means they send a representative to represent them. So, some government group will send one person as a representative. Just like that, BZHIN DU, just like that.

What? What's he going to say? Yeah, all the Buddhas had a meeting.

RGYA BA RNAMS KYIS, all the Buddhas. RANG RE'I PHYIR DU, just for you, just for you. LAM BAR DRUL, they emanated one teacher for you.

[Говорящий 2] (1:51 - 1:55)
All the Buddhas emanated one teacher just for you.

[Говорящий 1] (1:55 - 2:26)
And they sent like their representative to you. So, LA DE LA BSTAN TSUL TSUL SHING BYAS NA By the way, if you're learning Tibetan, the repetition of TSUL is on purpose, okay? So, you're supposed to say, BSTAN TSUL, hesitate, TSUL SHING, okay?

It's not a mistake in the carving, okay? Although there are many mistakes in the carving.

[Говорящий 2] (2:35 - 2:50)
Except this carving is almost completely pure because of the person who edited it, which is Trijang Rinpoche.

[Говорящий 1] (2:50 - 3:05)
DE LA BSTAN TSUL TSUL SHING BYAS NA If we have a nice relationship with our teacher, SANGS RGYAS RNAMS KYIS KYANG MKHAN the Buddhas understand that.

[Говорящий 2] (3:05 - 3:08)
They see that.

[Говорящий 1] (3:08 - 3:17)
CING RGYAS PAR GYUR PA YIN And they feel happy. RGYAS TSUL YANG How do they feel happy?

[Говорящий 2] (3:20 - 3:29)
DU TSIS SNYING PO LAS Say, DU TSIS SNYING PO DU TSIS Anybody know DU TSIS?

[Говорящий 1] (3:32 - 3:32)
Yeah, nectar.

[Говорящий 2] (3:34 - 3:34)
Amrita.

[Говорящий 1] (3:34 - 3:54)
A means not. Myrta means die. Amrita means you don't have to die.

People mispronounce it as Amrita. Nectar. Nect means to die.

Like necrophilia means death, right?

[Говорящий 2] (3:54 - 3:58)
Nectar. Nect means to die.

[Говорящий 1] (4:01 - 5:21)
Tar is an old Sanskrit and Greek root that means to cross over like Tara. So Nectar also means to Amrita. Same meaning.

In Tibetan language we say DU TSIS. SNYING PO means what? The heart or the essence.

SNYING is heart. SNYING PO is essence. Or you can say SNYING PO heart also.

Yeah, heart. You can also say heart. SNYING PO So this is a very famous Lam Rim book.

There are many Lam Rims. There are many books like the one we are studying. Then the Essence of Nectar was written, the person was born, the author was born in 1761 and passed away in 1816.

Then his name was Yeshe Tsundru. You should know his name, Yeshe Tsundru.

[Говорящий 2] (5:24 - 5:26)
Yeshe Tsundru.

[Говорящий 1] (5:27 - 5:36)
Then my teacher, Ken Rinpoche, he liked this Lam Rim.

[Говорящий 2] (5:36 - 5:37)
It's short.

[Говорящий 1] (5:39 - 6:53)
It's easy for foreigners to understand. So he taught it to us. He translated it.

Some of his students translated it. It's called Essence of Nectar. You can buy it on the internet.

Amazon. It's a nice book to have. He quotes a verse from this Lam Rim.

GZHAN YIN DANG PA TSUL SHING BSTAN BYAS When you have a good relationship with a good teacher, DE NI MYUR DU ZI LAS DRUL GYUR ZHES then they say you will quickly be free from your suffering. Who's they say? Who says?

All the Buddhas.

[Говорящий 2] (6:54 - 6:56)
They're watching you.

[Говорящий 1] (6:57 - 7:00)
They see, oh, this person has a teacher.

[Говорящий 2] (7:05 - 7:08)
This person carefully chose a good teacher.

[Говорящий 1] (7:13 - 7:29)
And they are serving this teacher correctly. Oh, look, he's going to get enlightened very fast. They are talking to each other.

Oh, look, he has a teacher.

[Говорящий 2] (7:31 - 7:34)
He has a good relationship with the teacher.

[Говорящий 1] (7:35 - 8:08)
Okay. BU LA PHAN PAR GRUB PA MED TONG ZHING means it's like when the mother sees that the son is doing something really good. RGYAL BA MA LUS THOG YID STING NAS RGYAS All of the Buddhas are happy.

Not just happy. STING NAS is a nice word. STING NAS means deep, deep, deep inside they are like like that.

[Говорящий 2] (8:09 - 8:25)
STING NAS RGYAS ZHES GSUM PA BZHIN RGYAL BA RNAMS KYIS MED BU GCIG LA BRTZE BA LTAR So he's commenting.

[Говорящий 1] (8:25 - 9:50)
It's like a mother who only has one son or one daughter. And then RANG CAG RNAMS KHOR BA They see that this son or daughter is quickly, they are doing something which is going to free them from a lot of pain. My teacher, he used to watch the news to learn English.

If something he wants me to see, he lives upstairs, he will stamp on the floor with his foot. He doesn't allow me to have a TV. But if his foot's down, I have to run upstairs and look at the TV.

I remember one day there was a mother in New York and they are interviewing her. TV people are interviewing her. What about your son?

What about your son?

[Говорящий 2] (9:52 - 9:58)
He's a good boy. Yeah, but are you sure? Are you sure?

[Говорящий 1] (9:59 - 10:13)
He wouldn't hurt anybody. This guy killed, just killed ten people in New York. But of course the mother loves the son.

It doesn't matter.

[Говорящий 2] (10:17 - 10:19)
He's a good boy.

[Говорящий 1] (10:20 - 10:37)
Of course, Rinpoche said, look, that's in the lam rim. This is the mother. Now if that boy does something good, doesn't have to go to jail, or they find out he didn't do it, like that.

[Говорящий 2] (10:41 - 10:45)
Then how happy will the mother be?

[Говорящий 1] (10:46 - 11:47)
THABS KHO NA RDZEN PA So they see, oh, my kid, my kid is finally doing something to get out of trouble. They understood the most important thing in life is to find a teacher. And they are having a good relationship with that teacher.

DE KHYEN NAS SHES DON GRUB DON GRUB, say DON GRUB. DON GRUB DON GRUB In Sanskrit, DON is ARTA. Say ARTA.

ARTA And GRUB is SIDDHA. SIDDHA Put it together. DON GRUB means, oh, this kid is going to DON GRUB.

DON GRUB means SIDDHA ARTA. This is the name of the Buddha, right?

[Говорящий 2] (11:53 - 11:54)
It's the name of the prince.

[Говорящий 1] (11:56 - 12:07)
It means the one who reaches their goal. DON GRUB PAS GNYEN PA YIN Why are they happy?

[Говорящий 2] (12:09 - 12:20)
Because you are DON GRUB. You are going to reach your goals. So of course your mom is happy.

Who's the mom?

[Говорящий 1] (12:21 - 12:26)
All the Buddhas. If you are, that's the second benefit, right?

[Говорящий 2] (12:27 - 12:37)
If you are happy, have a good relationship with a good teacher, the Buddhas will be happy.

[Говорящий 1] (12:39 - 12:54)
Why? You're going to get enlightened very soon. That's what their business, they are in the enlightenment business.

I have to tell you, my teacher said one day, he's drinking tea, okay?

[Говорящий 2] (12:58 - 13:00)
Hey Mike, he calls me Hey Mike.

[Говорящий 1] (13:02 - 13:34)
Hey Mike, there's two good businesses in the world. Oh, what's that Rinpoche? First one is to sell alcohol.

I said, Rinpoche, you came in the monastery when you were seven years old, you never had one drop of alcohol in your whole life. He said, yeah, but I understand alcohol. What do people do when they are very happy?

[Говорящий 2] (13:36 - 13:40)
They drink. When they are very sad, they drink.

[Говорящий 1] (13:42 - 13:52)
I heard that about mezcal. I heard it about mezcal. I said, what's the second good business, Rinpoche?

[Говорящий 2] (13:52 - 13:55)
I said, what's the second good business?

[Говорящий 1] (13:55 - 14:34)
It's a Dharma business. It's current. Why?

Customer never finish. Everyone suffering. Even the people who think they are happy, after one week they all suffer.

We always have customer. So when the Buddha sees you are finally out of trouble, one person on this whole planet is getting out of trouble. They are studying with a teacher.

[Говорящий 2] (14:42 - 14:43)
Then of course they are happy.

[Говорящий 1] (14:45 - 15:13)
Okay, next one. NYID PA NI LAM MA TSUL BZHIN MA BSTAN PAR If you don't have a good relationship with your teacher, SANGS RGYAS LA CHOS PA JI LTAR BU RYONG it doesn't matter how many nice offerings you put on the altar. Buddhas don't like it.

MI RGYAS means they don't like it.

[Говорящий 2] (15:17 - 15:21)
That's a terrible feeling.

[Говорящий 1] (15:22 - 16:41)
For example, I grow flowers because I want to offer them to my teacher. Then it makes me so happy to I work the whole year, I grow some flowers. Then when they are coming I cut some flowers and I offer to them.

Then imagine if they say I don't want your flowers. They throw it and say I don't like your flowers. Why?

Because this person is not have a good relationship with their teacher. This person is not respecting their teacher. So this is a very heavy sad verse, sad line.

If you are not treating your teacher with respect or affection, you can put a lot of, you can make a candle and you can put a lot of flowers you can put a candle and you can put flowers.

[Говорящий 2] (16:42 - 16:46)
The Buddhas will avoid it. It smells bad to them.

[Говорящий 1] (16:48 - 17:08)
Okay, understand? Heavy, it's heavy. Okay.

Then he quotes Jampel Sherlung. This is a lamrim written by the fifth Dalai Lama. His Holiness the fifth Dalai Lama.

Very, very, very, very, very, very famous verse.

[Говорящий 2] (17:09 - 17:13)
Good translation.

[Говорящий 1] (17:16 - 17:26)
If you want to learn Tibetan, if you want to just learn one thing, this is a nice verse.

[Говорящий 2] (17:26 - 17:28)
This is five lines.

[Говорящий 1] (17:29 - 17:30)
Very, very famous.

[Говорящий 2] (17:32 - 17:33)
Okay? Here it is.

[Говорящий 1] (17:33 - 19:06)
DI DON LDAN RGA SHIG LA SNGA NI DE'I LUS NAS TE GRUB PA'I GZHAN LA SPYOD PA LEN DE YID DE NYES RANG GI RGYU LAS KYI GRUB PAR BDAG CHE DANG DI DON LDAN means who have this good goal. RGA SHIG LA means to some of them. SNGA NI DE'I LUS NAS TE I will enter their body.

This is by the way Vajradhara, secret Buddha. I tell you, I will enter the body of some of the people around you. GRUB PA'I GZHAN LA SPYOD PA LEN And I will accept the offerings of other people.

DE YID DE NYES RANG GI RGYU And by pleasing me, RANG GI RGYU LAS KYI GRUB PAR BDAG CHE DANG means those people who make the offering, all their obstacles will disappear. Understand? What he means is I will enter the body of your teacher.

[Говорящий 2] (19:06 - 19:15)
When you are ready to make an offering to your teacher, what's the best offering?

[Говорящий 1] (19:15 - 20:12)
Be nice to somebody. Be nice to somebody else. If I see you are about to make this offering to your teacher, quickly I will get into your teacher's body.

I will accept that offering. And it makes me happy. And then your mind gets pure.

Cool? Understand? This is a Tantric Buddha.

This is very famous. So, just before you offer, just before you tell your teacher about something good you did for somebody else, I suggest you pause for one minute.

[Говорящий 2] (20:12 - 20:19)
Give the Buddha time to get into their body.

[Говорящий 1] (20:19 - 20:23)
Then you are pleasing the Buddha.

[Говорящий 2] (20:25 - 20:27)
So, go slow.

[Говорящий 1] (20:28 - 20:54)
Those of you who are trying to learn Tibetan, the third line says GRU PO GZHAN LA CHOD PA LEN The LA is a little confusing. LA means I will give offerings to other people. It would be more comfortable if it said I will take offerings from other people.

[Говорящий 2] (20:55 - 21:04)
It would be more comfortable if it said If it said I will take the offerings of others, it would be better.

[Говорящий 1] (21:09 - 21:53)
But the Tibetan, sometimes the Tibetan says I will give the offerings to others. So, I checked in Kangyur. We typed in half a million pages in the last 25 years.

So, I checked the old scriptures. It doesn't say LA. It says KYIS, which makes more sense.

It says GRU PO GZHAN GYIS CHOD PA LEN I take the offerings of others, not from or not to. It says of others.

[Говорящий 2] (21:53 - 21:53)
That's good.

[Говорящий 1] (22:03 - 22:40)
So, they say, he says that comes from a book by the Fifth Dalai Lama. There is a famous lamrim by the Fifth Dalai Lama and it comes from there. It's called The Word of Gentle Voice, or The Word of Manjushri.

But actually you can find it. It's a book on Mahamudra. From ancient India.

Then there's a long quotation, but you're tired. I won't give you the whole quotation.

[Говорящий 2] (22:40 - 22:45)
But it's very beautiful.

[Говорящий 1] (22:58 - 25:59)
Okay. I was waiting for someone to say that. So, here's the whole text from ancient India.

Very, very old. Very ancient. GANG ZHIG RDI NI MA STOG PAR SANGS PA MA' BAR BYAS PA NI Anyone who says they are practicing the secret way, but they don't understand this thing.

DE NI NGA DANG, DE BZHIN GZHAN GNAF ZHUGS DE LA BYA BYED PA'I PHYING GI LO PAR MI BYED DO So, those people, for those people, I don't enter the body of their teacher. DE NI DON NAS RGA SHES LA NGA NI DE'I LUS NAS TE GRUB PA GZHAN LA CHOD PAR LEN DE'I NYES DE RANG GI RGYU LAS KYI GRUB PA GZHAN LA CHOD PAR LEN That's the verse that I told you. But some lucky people, I will enter their body, you will give an offering to that teacher, and then you get the good karma of offering to me.

DI DON NA BA PO BYED PAR GANG GI DUS SU GNAS PA DER, SANGS RGYAS BSTAN PA RIN CHEN MYANG GNAS PA RAB TU SHES PA YIN And as long as that's happening, as long as a student is honoring a teacher in a place, the Buddha's teaching is in that place. RGYUS PA'I RIM PA DU BYED NAS SANGS RGYAS BSTAN PA RIN CHEN MYANG GNAS PA RAB TU SHES PA BYA But if in a place this custom is broken, that the students are respecting the teacher, then we can say, GNUG means we can say that the sun of the teachings has set in that land. There is no sun of the teaching in that land.

Okay, I think we may be not done. SHES PA LTAR RGYA BA RNAMS CHEN MA GRANGS KYANG LA MED GUS LA ZHUGS NAS So, if you are having a good relationship with your teacher, CHEN MA GRANGS means even if you didn't invite the Buddhas to come to that place, LA MED GUS LA ZHUGS they will come. They will enter your Lama's body.

RANG GI CHOS PA RGYA SHIN SHES PA RGYUR And they will accept your offerings.

[Говорящий 2] (25:59 - 25:59)
Happily.

[Говорящий 1] (26:02 - 26:48)
Then he says a cool thing. I like this thing. I don't know.

This is the things I get excited about. He says a beautiful thing. RGYA BA ZAD CES LA CHOS PA BUD KYANG So think about it.

You can make an offering. In your mind you can offer to all the Buddhas. You can put this candle here.

In your heart, in your mind you can say this is for all the Buddhas in the... May all the Buddhas in the universe see this with their own eyes. And you get one good karmic seed.

[Говорящий 2] (26:48 - 27:00)
You get a special karmic seed that you offered this thing to all the Buddhas in your heart.

[Говорящий 1] (27:02 - 27:39)
But LAS means but here. RGYA SHIN SHES PA'I PHAN YIN MI SBYUNG You don't get to watch their reaction. You can imagine, but you cannot directly, you cannot see.

I saw a nice joke the other day. It's a cartoon in the magazine. There's birthday things all over.

[Говорящий 2] (27:42 - 27:47)
And there's a big box and it's open.

[Говорящий 1] (27:48 - 27:51)
And the Dalai Lama has a box in his hand.

[Говорящий 2] (27:51 - 27:55)
And he's like, he looks like this.

[Говорящий 1] (27:57 - 28:26)
And then he says, just what I always wanted. Nothing. So you don't get to see the reaction when you offer a karma.

You don't get to watch the face of the person who gets the gift.

[Говорящий 2] (28:26 - 28:44)
But if the Buddhas come into your Lama and you offer it to them, you get a special second karmic seed. What's that?

[Говорящий 1] (28:46 - 31:00)
You get to see their reaction. You tell your Lama, I've been jealous of this other student for 15 years. I know because I did it for 25 years.

But today I felt harmony with them. Today I was happy for them. Then of course your Lama will go, wow, that's so great.

Then you get the karma of seeing their face. This plants a special karma in your mind. So it's nice to ...

We had a nice talk a few weeks ago in Phoenix. A Christian priest came to talk to us. He was unusual.

He's hip, pretty hip. He teaches once a week in the bar. It's pretty cool.

He has like 50, 60 people follow him. It's nice. I don't know him.

I didn't meet him before, but he came to give us a talk. He has a bag. In the bag there's a can of peas and one pair of his old pants.

Then he said, you know, I don't know all of you Buddhist people. This is my first time to talk to you. So I thought I'd like to give each person a gift.

[Говорящий 2] (31:00 - 31:05)
So I thought I'd like to give each person a gift.

[Говорящий 1] (31:05 - 31:37)
He gave me the can of peas. Then of course, I'm the monk. I have to say, oh, thank you.

Then he gave the flour to Adam and Katie, I remember. Then Adam's like ... Then he gave the pants.

Who gave the pants?

[Говорящий 2] (31:38 - 31:39)
Oh, he passed them.

[Говорящий 1] (31:40 - 32:56)
Then he said, these are some old pants. They are my pants. They won't fit you.

Also, they have a hole in the ... Then we're all ... we get confused.

We are confused. We're like ... Then he gave a very nice talk.

His specialty is to help poor people and the homeless people. Then he said that people are always giving homeless people things. The church will have toy collection drive.

They will get many toys. Then they go out to the homeless children and give them these big toys. But they don't think the child has no place to put the toy.

They can't carry the toy around all day. They don't have a house.

[Говорящий 2] (32:57 - 33:15)
So he said many times religious people they give gifts to other people but they don't actually study that person to see what they want.

[Говорящий 1] (33:16 - 33:29)
They just want to give something and they feel religious. So he said, if you want to be a real generous person, check out the other person.

[Говорящий 2] (33:31 - 33:32)
Get to know them.

[Говорящий 1] (33:33 - 33:39)
What do they like? Then give them that thing. Same with Lama, okay?

[Говорящий 2] (33:39 - 33:41)
Same with Lama.

[Говорящий 1] (33:41 - 33:47)
This story, whole story is about your Lama. Check out the Lama.

[Говорящий 2] (33:49 - 33:50)
Don't just give them something.

[Говорящий 1] (33:52 - 34:39)
Check out what do they like. This Lama, they like to hear that you stopped your jealousy for one hour or two hours. It makes me happy because I couldn't stop my own.

So choose the thing which they enjoy. Anytime you give a gift, think about the other person, not about yourself. Many people cook for a meal for somebody else what they like, not what the other person likes.

[Говорящий 2] (34:46 - 34:56)
So for your teacher, see what they like, give them what they really want, and then you get to watch their face.

[Говорящий 1] (34:59 - 35:38)
They're like, cool, you weren't jealous for two hours? Well, maybe one hour. Then you get this, it's a special karma to see your Lama's face really happy.

When you see that face because you made the face happy. It's a special karma, and you will be a very happy person. All right.

We'll do a little bit more and then I'll take some questions then we stop, okay?

[Говорящий 2] (35:42 - 35:53)
I want to thank all the people from China, Singapore, all of Argentina, because they have jet lag.

[Говорящий 1] (35:55 - 36:44)
Then it makes me happy because I always have jet lag. Next time I come to China and Beijing, you have to remember. Okay, we just do a few more, half hour.

We're on benefit number three. First one was you get closer to Buddhahood. Geshe Michael got confused because it had two parts.

Okay, I don't remember what they were, but oh no, you do what your teacher asks you, you get closer to Buddhahood.

[Говорящий 2] (36:50 - 36:59)
And if you make proper offering to your teacher, you also get closer to Buddhahood.

[Говорящий 1] (37:01 - 37:01)
That's number one.

[Говорящий 2] (37:03 - 37:04)
What was number two?

[Говорящий 1] (37:07 - 37:25)
Yeah, I mean all the Buddhas are happy. It's like a party, Buddha party. Look, look, he met a teacher today.

Oh! Finally, he's doing something right. They're like your mom.

They're happy.

[Говорящий 2] (37:27 - 37:30)
Okay, benefit number three.

[Говорящий 1] (37:30 - 37:43)
GSOS PA'I DUS DANG, DU SROG GI MI TSUGS PA Negative forces cannot touch you if you have a good relationship with your teacher.

[Говорящий 2] (37:46 - 38:06)
If you have a good teacher and you have a good relationship with them, negative spirits cannot touch you. And SDIG SROG cannot touch you.

[Говорящий 1] (38:07 - 38:32)
SDIG SROG is a special word in Buddhism. It means bad friend. The friend who gets you in trouble.

Maybe you had a friend like that. My little brother had a friend like that.

[Говорящий 2] (38:32 - 38:34)
Some friends like that. SDIG SROG.

[Говорящий 1] (38:39 - 38:50)
They were teaching him how to do drugs and how to use guns and things like that. Real, really SDIG SROG. Later he killed himself.

[Говорящий 2] (38:50 - 38:54)
Later my brother killed himself.

[Говорящий 1] (38:54 - 38:58)
I believe because of the influence of all these kind of crazy people.

[Говорящий 2] (38:59 - 39:09)
You know, bad people. So that's a SDIG SROG. We'll talk more about SDIG SROG.

[Говорящий 1] (39:09 - 40:14)
MDO LAS GSUNGS PA GZHAN GZHAN YANG TSUL GZHAN DU BRTEN PAS GZHAN DU BRTEN PAS NI GSOS RNAMS CAN PO'I PHAL LA If you, the sutras say, if you have a good relationship with your teacher, then all of your good karma increases. And that increase in your karma is like a shield. The negative forces cannot, they try to hurt you, but they cannot touch you.

Then he quotes a sutra as an example. This sutra is called GYA CHER ROL PA in Tibetan. In Sanskrit, it's LALITTA VISTARA.

It means the, what do you call it, this is a nice one, the playground which is as big as the universe.

[Говорящий 2] (40:23 - 40:28)
Like the football field which is as big as the universe.

[Говорящий 1] (40:31 - 41:00)
It means when you learn these things and your meditation is good, then the whole world is like your playground. You go to China, you're having like a lot of fun. You go to Guadalajara, you're having also fun.

You go to Norway, you're having fun with Norway people.

[Говорящий 2] (41:03 - 41:05)
That's the meaning of this sutra's name.

[Говорящий 1] (41:08 - 42:00)
That sutra said, GSOS RNAMS CAN PO'I PHAL LA GSOS RNAMS LDAN PA'I MI'I SANGS PA RNAMS KUN KYANG GRUB DU BYONG NAS NI BYANG CHUB MYUR DU RE BAR GYUR A person who has this kind of good karma, they get all the things they dream of, and they destroy all their demons, and they quickly reach enlightenment. They think about, should I read you the whole sutra? I don't think so.

It's kind of long. Let me see. Let me just see if it's...

I'm going to skip this one, okay? Because there's a more important thing coming. But I found it.

If you're interested, someday I can show you.

[Говорящий 2] (42:04 - 42:06)
Then he quotes another sutra.

[Говорящий 1] (42:09 - 43:19)
And I'll go for five more minutes and then I'll take questions, okay? If you don't have any questions, I'll send you to bed. GZHAN YANG GSOS RNAMS LDAN PA'I MI LTA LA LHA' AM DU GYIS RIGS LTA GYIS BAR BYED CHA BAR MI NUS SO If a person has enough good karma, then nothing can cause, nothing can block them in their practice.

Neither, there's a special beings called, what do you call? Like, I don't know how to say. DE BA DE BA means angel, but it can also mean like a negative, a negative spirit.

It's possible. Okay, so this sutra I'll read you. I looked it up.

It comes from a book called Vinaya Vastu.

[Говорящий 2] (43:24 - 43:25)
Vinaya Vastu.

[Говорящий 1] (43:25 - 43:43)
This is actually the first book in the whole Buddhist canon. It's the first book in the Kangyur, okay? And it's all about how to take vows and Pratimoksha vows, how to not hurt other people.

[Говорящий 2] (43:49 - 43:53)
Pratimoksha vows, how to not hurt other people, not hurt others.

[Говорящий 1] (43:53 - 45:31)
DE NAS BYAMS DANG DE'I KHYAD SONG PA KHA KUN DANG SANGS PA BYIN PA DE LA BYAS SU YI RANG BA'I BYAS SU YI RANG BA'I BYAS SU YI RANG BA'I BRTZE STE Then the Buddha was talking to the businessman and to the other person named SANGS PA BYIN and the Buddha was being happy about being happy The Buddha was doing coffee meditation about coffee meditation about coffee meditation. You can do that, right? I'm happy, why?

I did coffee meditation yesterday. What did you do your coffee meditation about? That I did my coffee meditation last week.

Okay. You can keep going, okay? GANG GI DON DU BYIN PA STANGS DE'I DON DU RGYUR PA STE DE BA'I DON DU BYIN STANGS NA DE NAS DE BAR GYUR PA YIN For whatever reason you are helping other people or giving them things or helping them to make money that becomes helping yourself.

Helping yourself.

[Говорящий 2] (45:32 - 45:34)
When you help others.

[Говорящий 1] (45:35 - 45:47)
DE BA'I DON DU BYIN STANGS NA And if you're giving something to someone to make them happy DE NAS DE BAR GYUR PA YIN it would just make you happy.

[Говорящий 2] (45:49 - 45:57)
You know that when you feel depressed you never think about other people.

[Говорящий 1] (45:57 - 46:40)
Then you get more depressed. The best thing for depression is to just do anything for somebody else. And that karma will change your depression.

SON NAMS LA MIN DE BA DANG SANGS PA YANG NI RDUG PAR GYUR The karmic result of being nice to other people is happiness for yourself. And the things you dream you will accomplish. NYUR DU ZHI BA DANG PA YIN NYANG NGAN BDE PAR RTOG PAR GYUR And quickly you will reach nirvana.

[Говорящий 2] (46:43 - 46:47)
Which is the highest peace.

[Говорящий 1] (46:47 - 46:55)
BAR DO LAS GCIG GNOD PA NI LHA DANG RDUG GI RIGS BDAG GIS All the problems are ...

[Говорящий 2] (46:55 - 46:59)
Okay, let me talk about this.

[Говорящий 1] (47:00 - 47:02)
So there's a word in Tibetan called RDU.

[Говорящий 2] (47:05 - 47:11)
RDU means demon. Evil spirit.

[Говорящий 1] (47:13 - 47:31)
Then there's a cute book. You should read it. It's a Christian book.

If you see any good book, you should read it, okay? This is a great book.

[Говорящий 2] (47:32 - 47:32)
Tao Te Ching.

[Говорящий 1] (47:34 - 47:40)
It's great. It's not Buddhist. But if it's a great book, it's good to read.

[Говорящий 2] (47:43 - 47:44)
It's good to memorize.

[Говорящий 1] (47:46 - 47:59)
So there's a book called Screw Tape Letters. Screw Tape Letters. It's a screw tape.

It's just a guy's funny name. Screw means like screwing. Tape means like tape.

[Говорящий 2] (48:00 - 48:03)
Like screw tape. It's the name of a devil.

[Говорящий 1] (48:04 - 48:20)
It's a devil's name. It's by C.S. Lewis. He wrote the Narnia stories for children.

There's some movies nowadays, right?

[Говорящий 2] (48:21 - 48:22)
He's a great writer.

[Говорящий 1] (48:24 - 49:39)
Do you know who's his best friend? Tolkien. Who wrote The Hobbit.

These two guys are writing together all day, having fun. During World War II, but that's a long story. World War II.

He's talking about, these are letters written by the devil to his nephew. The nephew got sent to earth. His job is to ruin one young man's life.

He's getting advice from his uncle, who is the devil. C.S. Lewis said when he wrote that book, it was very disturbing for him. He has to imagine what will the devil tell to his nephew to ruin a young man's life.

[Говорящий 2] (49:47 - 50:05)
Then in one of the letters, the devil writes to his nephew, there's one great achievement of the devil in modern world. Then the nephew says, what is it?

[Говорящий 1] (50:08 - 51:47)
We made people, modern people think devil doesn't exist. Modern people think it's stupid to talk about the devil. It's not fashionable to talk about the devil.

If you talk about the devil, you're old fashioned. Then the devil said, this is one of the greatest achievements that we did in the 20th and 21st century. Nobody believes in the devil.

Then in Buddhism we believe. We believe there is such a thing as a demon. Then if you meditate a lot, you can see them.

It's very disturbing. Why? Because mainly they show up as nice friend.

They don't have horns. They show like your ... just your childhood friend.

They say, where are you going? You're packing some bag, where are you going? I'm going to Guadalajara, Mexico.

Why?

[Говорящий 2] (51:48 - 51:54)
There's a teacher there and he's going to talk for 10 days.

[Говорящий 1] (51:54 - 51:59)
What's he going to talk about? How not to die.

[Говорящий 2] (52:01 - 52:13)
Come on man. We're going out for some beers. Forget that crap.

[Говорящий 1] (52:13 - 52:41)
Who believes that stuff? I was in Ireland. I'm sorry to say, this is one of my home country ...

my ancestors, some of them came from Ireland. We were putting posters up in Galway, Ireland for a talk, Buddhist talk. And some guy is reading, huh, there's a Buddhist talk tonight.

[Говорящий 2] (52:45 - 52:55)
There's a Buddhist talk? Yeah. You're the guy in the picture.

Yeah, that's me, yeah. He said, you're a Buddhist monk?

[Говорящий 1] (52:57 - 53:03)
Yeah, yeah. Oh, my whole life I wanted to meet a Buddhist monk also. A whole life I want to meet.

[Говорящий 2] (53:06 - 53:15)
So see you tonight. Tonight? Tonight?

It's Friday night man.

[Говорящий 1] (53:18 - 53:26)
It's pub night. It's pub night. I can't miss a pub night.

He didn't come.

[Говорящий 2] (53:28 - 53:35)
So that kind of friend, they are not like, what do you call it?

[Говорящий 1] (53:35 - 53:37)
They are not shooting heroin into your arm, okay?

[Говорящий 2] (53:40 - 53:44)
They are cool. They are hip.

[Говорящий 1] (53:46 - 55:01)
They are modern. You say, I'm going to Guadalajara for a spiritual week. Then they don't bite you.

They're like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Om, om, om. Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna.

Then you don't go. That's a demon. That's a real demon.

Someday you'll be able to see the demon under the person's skin. If you meditate a lot, you will reach that. But if you have a good teacher, and you have a sweet relationship, like affection, you are like Iron Man.

They try to say, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, and then you're like, yeah, I think it's cool.

[Говорящий 2] (55:06 - 55:09)
They can't touch you.

[Говорящий 1] (55:09 - 55:13)
The scriptures, the word, the word is cannot touch you.

[Говорящий 2] (55:17 - 55:18)
So those beings exist.

[Говорящий 1] (55:22 - 56:02)
You have to understand that. Don't think it's some superstition or some old Buddhist idea. It's not like that.

They are cool. They are hip. They are subtle.

And they are persuasive. They'll put you in a blog or something. They'll write some blog about you.

Make fun of you. Then you feel shy to go to the spiritual talk. You see?

[Говорящий 2] (56:02 - 56:22)
Like that. If you have a teacher, and if you have this very sweet relationship with the teacher, nothing can shake you.

[Говорящий 1] (56:22 - 56:22)
Nothing.

[Говорящий 2] (56:24 - 56:33)
Nobody can shake you. The world can fall apart, you are happy.

[Говорящий 1] (56:33 - 56:43)
You are strong. Nobody can change your mind. So to have a teacher will protect you.

[Говорящий 2] (56:46 - 56:46)
Protect your life.

[Говорящий 1] (56:48 - 57:06)
I had all these cool friends in the university. My two roommates in the university. Both became lawyers.

[Говорящий 2] (57:08 - 57:10)
Pretty rich and famous lawyers.

[Говорящий 1] (57:12 - 57:19)
Now they're always writing me letters. Oh, I got a heart attack. What should I do?

What should I do?

[Говорящий 2] (57:23 - 57:27)
So you are doing the right thing. Later you will understand.

[Говорящий 1] (57:30 - 57:33)
All your friends will ask you, please help me, please help me.

[Говорящий 2] (57:37 - 57:38)
Prepare now.

[Говорящий 1] (57:39 - 58:45)
Learn these things now, while you are young. In your whole life they will protect you. And later everybody will say, oh you were the smart one.

Only you were the smart one. The one lawyer died. In my university, you are required to learn to swim.

This rule is, I don't know, like 150 years old. Then my roommate, he went to the school officials. He said, I'm not learning to swim and you are not going to throw me out of school.

This is a stupid rule from 150 years ago. And I will sue you.

[Говорящий 2] (58:46 - 58:47)
This is the American system.

[Говорящий 1] (58:51 - 58:58)
So they said, okay, okay, you don't have to learn to swim. Then he got married, he has two nice children.

[Говорящий 2] (59:00 - 59:07)
He is a lawyer for the European Atomic Energy Commission.

[Говорящий 1] (59:08 - 59:13)
He was walking near a small river one day.

[Говорящий 2] (59:15 - 59:21)
He slipped, he fell in, and he drowned.

[Говорящий 1] (59:25 - 1:00:00)
That night, I didn't hear about it, but I had a dream about him. He was on the other side of a big glass wall, like this glass. His wife and his two kids were in the kitchen, at the table.

And they were crying. Then he was beating on the glass, like that.

[Говорящий 2] (1:00:03 - 1:00:08)
He was trying to touch them or make them hear him.

[Говорящий 1] (1:00:12 - 1:00:13)
And they couldn't hear him.

[Говорящий 2] (1:00:18 - 1:00:20)
So those things will happen in your life.

[Говорящий 1] (1:00:23 - 1:00:31)
You're doing the right thing. You're doing the smart thing. To be here you are hip and you are also cool.

[Говорящий 2] (1:00:41 - 1:00:44)
Okay, all right.

[Говорящий 1] (1:00:48 - 1:01:58)
Let's do it. Let's do it. Chant.

Chant. Chant. Chant.

Chant. Chant. Chant.

Chant.
