I'm sorry I'm late, I misjudged the traffic. I'll take you a little bit later. So, we're here for three days to study Yoga Sutra.

I was trained in the yoga system that you're going to learn. A thousand years ago it came to Tibet. And I was trained in Tibetan monastery for 30 years.

And I'm going to give you the explanation as it's given in our monastery. In most places when I teach the Yoga Sutra, I teach it for teachers. And if you're interested in taking this for credit, or if you'd like a certificate afterwards, I'd like to explain what you need to do.

So, we will have homeworks at each class. There will be a homework that you get at the end of tonight. There will be another homework tomorrow.

And then another homework on the third day. And the homework you won't be able to turn it in. You'll turn it in online or like that.

We'll give you the information. In our tradition, in my tradition, when we take a teaching like this, we are expected to pass it on to other people. So, the teaching of the Yoga Sutra I'm giving you, it comes from a tradition which is almost 15 centuries old.

And it's been passed down through more than 40 generations. So, it would be unfortunate if it stopped in this generation. So, it means that each person who hears this from a qualified teacher should be ready to pass it on to another person.

So, I don't like to teach Yoga Sutra unless the people are, you know, a little bit tough and exciting, and they want to pass it on to other people. If you're just coming to enjoy the class, you're welcome to come. You're welcome to sit here.

But you won't get a certificate. And I would like to encourage you to take notes. You have a reading.

If anybody needs a pen, raise your hand. There's some pens in my bag. There's some pens in my bag on the side, in the single pocket side.

Lots of pens. Take notes. And then I'd like to introduce the staff who will be grading the papers.

And they'll be here that you can ask questions. Darcy Jones. And where's Christine?

Walsh? Okay. Christina Button can help you.

Eric Stetson is here. Vicky Wong. Is here.

Cassie, right? Is there. These people have been through the Yoga Sutra, I don't know, a hundred years ago.

And they can help you with your homework. What I'd like to encourage you to do as part of the homework assignment is that you cheat on the homework. Okay?

It means I would like you to do your homework with somebody else in the class. So, tomorrow sometime, maybe go out to lunch with somebody. Or go out to an early dinner before the class starts.

And I'm asking you to do your homework with somebody else in the class. In New York we gave this class, I don't know, 300 yoga teachers came. And what I found, it was very useful.

I'm asking you to do your homework with at least one other person. Okay? So.

And that person has to be somebody that you don't know already. Alright? So, somebody in the class that you don't know already.

I forgot, but we should have name tags. Stick on name tags, alright? Not the big clunky plastic things.

So, you guys can take care of that. Tomorrow we'll have some name tags. Maybe, yeah.

Maybe we can find some here. I don't know. But, we'll be taking a break.

Halfway through the class. And then, I'll ask you to approach another person in the class that you don't know already. So, that's...

If you think somebody is cute, you can tell them Jesse Michael told us we have to ask somebody else to do the homework together. So, I'm asking you to do the homework together with somebody else. It's a very, very good system.

Okay? In New York, what happened was, you know, 300 yoga teachers got to meet the other yoga teachers that they don't usually talk to. And then, some beautiful things happened.

I mean, people came from different countries or different yoga studios. And then they met each other. And now, many, many friendships.

There are many, many projects. Many, many studios around the world. There's a big, what do you call it?

Incest. No. Well, it's like a networking.

[Говорящий 2]
Yeah.

[Говорящий 1]
And so, people get to go to Columbia, South America to teach. Or they go to Australia to teach. Because they met somebody in the class.

So, part of the goal of this class is that you make friends with other people. And you are required to do that. Okay?

So, you don't have to feel shy. You can go up to anybody. You're required to go up to somebody in the class and say, Would you like to do the homework together tomorrow?

And if they say no, you have to find somebody else. Alright? So, don't be shy.

Okay? When I come to a yoga class, I feel, especially if I don't know the teacher very well, I feel shy. I feel like I don't want to talk to the other students.

I try to do a better headstand than everybody else. And let's not do that. Okay?

Make friends with the people in the class. Okay? And then, I want you to be good at what you're doing.

I want you to be a good teacher of the Yoga Sutra. Okay? So, you're not just sitting in a Yoga Sutra class.

I want you to teach it to somebody else. It's a very, very beautiful, very holy thing. You can change people's lives.

You can make big changes in people's lives with the Yoga Sutra. So, I'm not giving some, you know, weird old book explanation or something like that. I want to teach you something that will help your life.

It will make you a more successful person. And it will make you a happier person. And then I would like you to spread it to other people.

Alright? And that's the way it should be. So, you have to work a little bit hard.

This is not going to be your normal Yoga class, you know, where you just show up and you get a certificate that says 400 hours or something like that. I went to one in Shivananda. I was there.

I teach there every year. And they gave me a certificate. I taught there for the last 10 years.

And then they gave me the certificate that said you completed 300 hours. I said, I haven't even been on the island for 300 hours. I didn't know how they counted, you know.

But in this class, I'd like you to work a little bit hard. So, get excited. It's going to be...

What do you call it? There's content. And it's a little bit chewy.

And you'll have a fun time. You'll have a good time. And by the time you end the course, you'll learn something that you can use in your life.

It makes you a real Yoga teacher. This is sort of an experiment. I talked to Colin, the owner of Pure.

I don't know, a year ago. And we talked about doing this course. This course normally takes 40 evenings.

And what I thought was we would just do a little experiment and see how it goes. And then if you want, we can do a real Yoga Sutra class. Which would take maybe 4 sessions of 10 nights each.

Then I normally go to Hatha Yoga Padipika, which takes another 40 nights. And then we do Bhagavad Gita, which takes another 40 nights. And then you're a real Yoga teacher.

Then you really know Yoga. And the exercises are 1% of Yoga. You really have to master all these other practices and all these other ideas to really help people.

The asanas by themselves, they're wonderful. They're very, very important. They're very good.

But they're impermanent, right? They won't last. You will get old.

One of my teachers is Dharmamitra. He just had knee surgery. He's the guy who stands on his head with no arms.

Niralambana Sarva Vyasana, right? And I was like, Shivasana. Anyway, he stands on his head with no arms.

But now he's old. And he had to get a knee surgery. And just the exercises are not enough.

The exercises will make you flexible for a while. And they'll make you thinner for a while. And then you'll get old.

And you won't be able to do them. So we have to study the deeper meaning of yoga in order to succeed at yoga. Otherwise, it's just impermanent.

You will lose whatever flexibility or whatever you're doing yoga for. You'll get old. And you won't be able to do yoga.

So the purpose of this class is to go a little bit deeper into the ways of actually changing your body and your being. And then you'll also do the asanas. You will also do the asanas.

So here we go. I have to try to move through the material. Today I sat in a coffee shop with somebody.

And we calculated and went cheap. And we calculated. I have to move a little bit faster than usually.

I think I clocked more than I was recently. And I'm sorry. I'm very sorry I'm late tonight.

It was just I didn't understand how long it took to get here. And tomorrow we'll start on time. I'm sorry for that.

Okay, here we go. Page one. Okay.

So we're going to do it the old way. The name of the book is Yoga Sutra. Say it.

Say yoga.

[Говорящий 2]
Sutra.

[Говорящий 1]
So I'm going to explain the name to you. Yoga means yoga. It comes from the root yuj, which is Y-U-J.

And that root means... That root means to join. So Y-U-J, a root Y-U-J means to join.

To join two things together. You're working on it. It came into English in the word yoke, which means to yoke two animals together with your hand and nose.

Or union. The word union comes from that. The word jugular vein, this vein here, it's called jugular.

In the old days it was jugular. I don't know. And it means the vein which connects the head and the body.

So that means to join. So what are you joining in yoga? There are many, many explanations of what you are joining when you do yoga.

In my lineage, in yoga, yoga came to Tibet a thousand years ago. It's been kept very strong, very pure. And then it was lost in India.

The Mongols came to India around 1,200 years ago and they destroyed most of the temples and all of the Buddhist monasteries were destroyed in India. There's no more Buddhist monasteries in India. And then the Hindu people who did yoga and the Buddhist monks who did yoga, they had to go underground and they weren't allowed to do yoga openly.

So in India, the teaching broke into small groups all over India. And it got sort of confused. In Tibet, because of the mountains, because of the Himalayan mountains, it was kept very nicely and very purely.

So we still study the same texts. In my monastery, we study, I don't know, 18 hours a day. Four or five hours are in the form of debating.

And it's a very pure system and it's a very old system. It's a very old lineage which came from India a thousand years ago and hasn't changed. It's been protected very well until the invention of the airplane in 1959.

So, in our tradition, the word yoga is called Neljor. Say Neljor. Neljor.

That's short for Nelmar Jorwa. Say Nelmar. Nelmar Jorwa.

Nelmar means ultimate reality, ultimate truth. Nelmar means ultimate truth. Nelmar Jorwa means to join yourself to ultimate truth.

So Neljor, the word yoga, what are you joining? You are joining your mind. You are joining your being to ultimate reality.

That's the goal of yoga. So, what would that be like? What would it be like to join yourself to ultimate reality?

It would be to understand how things really work. So that's the meaning of the word yoga. It's to understand how things really work.

So right now, in our life, in our world, we don't really understand how things work. For example, my Lama asked me to start a business to help the refugees. He forced me to start a business.

Without any experience, without any knowledge of business, he told me, you have to start a business. I said, what business do you want? He said, diamonds.

And then I said, I don't know anything about diamonds. Then he said, you take books like the Yoga Sutra and the Shingon Jin and the Shindong, okay? Diamond Cutter Sutra and the Heart Sutra and you use those books to start a business.

And if you understand ultimate reality, you will be successful. If you understand how things work, you will be successful. So, for example, now, if you have money, you want to invest it, maybe you're going to do property investments, or maybe you are going to do stock investments, right?

But you don't know if it's going to work. Right? You just take a chance.

Right? Do you ever ask people? Yeah, you ask people.

You just try, right? Like you talk to people and you do the best you can and you make an investment and then you you hope, right? And sometimes the stock will go up and sometimes the stock will go down.

Sometimes the property investment will go up, sometimes it will go down. Okay? In America, many people lost all their income.

Recently, the rich people, right? Their houses lost half the value. I know many, the wealthiest people in America are mostly bankrupt.

Many are bankrupt. Okay? The poor people are the same.

But the stocks and the stocks maybe they go up, maybe they go down. Okay? So, you get into your car or you get on the subway in the morning and you don't really know if it's going to work, right?

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. Sometimes the car starts, sometimes the car doesn't start. Maybe you get in the subway and an earthquake comes and you die.

Okay? And you say, no, no, that won't happen to me but it happened, what, two days ago to 10,000 people. You don't know.

Okay? You don't know if you will survive to get to work. All right?

You really don't know. All those 10,000 Japanese people, they thought they were just going to work and then they died. They didn't expect to die and they're not stupid.

They're just like us. Something happened. And we don't know in the morning what's going to happen in the day.

We don't really know. If you have Nelmar Jorwa, if you understand reality, if you can adjust the events of your life, that's yoga. Okay?

You see? Nelmar Jorwa means you can adjust the events of your life. You can change events.

I like the example of aspirin. You get a headache, right? And then you take an aspirin.

Will it work? Just be honest. You got to answer, okay?

Yeah, sometimes it will work. Okay? If something works sometimes, then it doesn't work.

Okay? No, you have to understand that, okay? Eat a rock, sometimes your headache will go away.

You see? It's the same thing. You are doing things in your life and you don't know if they will work.

To be honest, you know? You don't know if you will live to reach your office, okay? This is not yoga.

Yoga means I understand reality and I can adjust it, okay? I can make changes in what's going to happen to me. In my life.

In my day. So, I just sold the company last year. It made 250 million.

It's 250 million dollars a year now. We had 10,000 employees. Warren Buffet bought the company last year.

Okay? No experience. No interest.

I hate business. And I didn't spend any time. I only went three days a week.

It's like a spare time. What do you call it? It's a hobby.

It was just a hobby. Alright? Then people ask me.

Hundreds of people ask me. How did you do that? You know?

I said you just have to... You have to... What do you call it?

Turn some switches. Like that. Like Matrix.

The guy in the Matrix. He just kind of makes changes in the program. So, in our tradition the word for yoga means joining yourself to ultimate reality in the sense that I can make adjustments in my life.

And I can make things happen. Okay? I know how things work.

When I make an investment or I take an Aspen or... I'm not hoping that it's going to work. I know it's going to work.

Because I know how to... I know how to make adjustments in reality. It's very, very fun.

Okay? It's very, very fun to have the money you need. You don't have to worry.

I don't work. I'm here. Okay?

I mean, just relax. And... I turn the switches and the money comes.

I had a very bad... Thank you. That was hard to yoga alone.

Okay. How do you wear this? Like that?

I don't know. It feels weird. That's okay?

Is that better? Okay. Better for me.

I had a very bad handicap in my leg. I had a... What do you call?

Hereditary problem from my father. And... So I used...

I made some adjustments in the bone. And now I do ballet. Okay?

On that leg. I couldn't walk. I couldn't walk on it sometimes.

Now I do ballet. Last year, I told everybody, last year, I got the girl up in the air. That was...

Took me a couple years. All right? So you can make adjustments in reality.

You can learn to change events. That's yoga. Yeah.

[Говорящий 2]
So if you say you can change events, does that mean that the Japanese or Bangsae were not able to make events change that the earthquake or the tsunami has to happen?

[Говорящий 1]
Yeah. Obviously. We can see that.

Right? Otherwise, it wouldn't happen.

[Говорящий 2]
If someone... So they didn't turn on the switch. That's what you're saying.

[Говорящий 1]
Yeah. You have to learn how. And it's not...

It's not like everybody in a Buddhist monastery understands how to do it. Some monasteries have correct teaching. Some people learn it.

Some people are amazing. They don't take notes. Okay?

And then they don't learn. Okay? The ten years there, they don't learn anything.

Okay? It's like a real university. You know?

It's the same. Okay? Some people learn.

You can sit in the place, but some people learn and some people don't learn. Some people learn and they don't understand it. They don't get a good teaching.

You're going to get a good teaching if you come for three nights and if you just try. Do the homework. You will learn something and you can change everything in your life.

If you want. Okay? I think it's worth three nights.

Check it out. Okay? I'm not teaching some old book.

Okay? I'm teaching you how to change your life. Okay?

And many, many people I've taught. And there were two ladies sitting here in New York. They have a billion-dollar business now.

They were secretaries. Two secretaries. And now they own Kaplan Taylor Advertising in New York.

They have a 50-story building. Their business is four times bigger than my business. They don't even talk to me on the phone anymore.

And you can do it. Yeah. Okay, let's forget that.

You don't have karma for a microphone. I'm sorry. Okay.

So that's the meaning of Yoga means I join my being. I join myself to ultimate reality. I can change things.

Classy has died again. I don't know. Did I do something?

[Говорящий 2]
It's red.

[Говорящий 1]
Does that mean? Is it better? It's not your DNA.

It's all red. Okay. So that's the meaning of Yoga.

Sutra means short book. Okay? Short book.

Some sutras are 10,000 pages long. I don't know why they call those a sutra. But sutra traditionally means short book.

Sutra also means a thread. Okay? And you see brahmin people, they wear a thread from their shoulder to their waist.

And that's called a sutra. In the old days, the book, we didn't have paper. They didn't have paper.

They used to write the books on palm leaves. Okay? And you scratch it and then you fill it in with charcoal.

And that was how you write the book. Okay? Then there was no way to bind them.

So they drill a hole through the middle and they put a thread through it. And then that was called a sutra. Sutra can also mean ideas strung on a thread like a mala.

That's hard. You okay? It's okay.

So it means many ideas are strung on a thread. That's the meaning of Yoga Sutra. So like that.

You are going to hear ideas strung on a thread. You're going to get a summary. It's three days.

There are two hundred, I think, two hundred and ten verses in Yoga Sutra. We don't have time to do them all. We will do maybe, how many, Anna?

Verses, eight verses or nine? Nine plus nine is eighteen. A nine?

[Говорящий 2]
Oh, a nine is nine over nine.

[Говорящий 1]
Yeah, seven, eight, nine verses for nine. I took out the best verses for you, okay? You're going to get the trailer.

I like trailers because you can see the whole good part of the movie in the trailer. You don't have to go to the rest. So you're going to get the essence of the Yoga Sutra, all right?

So here we go. Say, say, Yogash. Yogash.

Chitta. Chitta. Bhakti.

[Говорящий 2]
Bhakti.

[Говорящий 1]
Nirodha. Nirodha. Yogash.

Yogash. Chitta.

[Говорящий 2]
Chitta.

[Говорящий 1]
Bhakti.

[Говорящий 2]
Bhakti.

[Говорящий 1]
Nirodha.

[Говорящий 2]
Nirodha.

[Говорящий 1]
Okay, most important line from the Yoga Sutra, okay? If you're a yoga teacher, you can impress your class. Just learn it, okay?

It's one line, all right? Yogash chitta bhakti nirodha. This is the second line of the Yoga Sutra.

And in this line, I think it's on your page there. Yeah. We translated it as we become whole by stopping how the mind turns, okay?

We become whole by stopping how the mind turns. So yoga, the word yoga, yoga means yoga, okay? When you join it with another word, you have to put a sha on it, okay?

So yogash, okay? But it means yoga. Chitta means your mind.

Chitta means your mind. Bhakti means turned around backwards. In Tibet, they call it chintilokpa.

It means, bhakti means your understanding is backwards. You don't understand. In English, bhakti came into English in the word like vortex, okay?

Or like that, revert. Or subvert, or invert. It means to turn, all right?

So, yoga is chitta-virti. Nirodha means stop. Stop it.

So in the second line of the Yoga Sutra, Master Patanjali, who wrote the book about 17 centuries ago, okay, he lived 280, he wrote the book. So you should know his name, okay? I'll spell it for you.

P-A-T-A-N-J-A-L-I. His name is Patanjali. Okay, you should know his name.

I had a very embarrassing time. One big lama asked me, what book are you studying? Then I said the book, Bodhicaryavatara.

Then he said, who's the author? I forgot. Okay, you don't want to be like that.

Somebody asks you who wrote the Yoga Sutra, you're going to say? Patanjali. Okay, pat means fell down.

Okay, pat means fell down. Anjali means this offering of water that you do in your hands, alright? There's a tradition in India that you offer water in your hands.

When you do a prayer, you offer water. So it means, Patanjali means fell down into the water in the hands. Why?

By the way, Tibetan is chur phung. Chur means into the water, phung means fell down, okay? So, why is his name Mr. Fell Down in the Water?

Okay, his mother wanted to have a, his mother was a great yoga teacher, great yogini. She wanted to have a son to carry on the lineage. She couldn't have a son.

She had trouble having a son. Okay, third one. She had trouble having a son.

And then, so she made a prayer. She offered water in her hands. And with her eyes closed.

When she opened her eyes, there's a little guy came down into the water. Okay, already finished. She didn't have to have all the nine months and all that.

Okay, and then he grew up and that was Patanjali. They named him Mr. Fell in the Water. Alright, so that's Master Patanjali.

He wrote this book. Nobody knows the year that he wrote the book. Nobody knows for sure.

I studied many, many books for many years. I, from the style and from the subject, I would say he lived about 200 AD. Okay, 200 common era.

About 17 centuries ago. Okay, so in the second verse, Master Patanjali tells you what is yoga. Okay, that's his first job.

He says, I'm going to tell you what yoga is. Yoga is citta-vrtti-ganoga. Stop.

Sorry. Stop. I don't like this.

Alright, let's try this way. Stop the way that your mind turns things around. Stop the way that your mind turns things around.

Your... Your... Yeah.

I hate this thing. Alright, your mind misunderstands things. Okay.

Your mind turns things around and it doesn't understand how things work. That's citta-vrtti. Citta-vrtti means turns things around.

Some people say citta-vrtti means thinking or anything in your mind. That's a mistaken explanation. It doesn't help you to stop thinking.

Alright. No great mama or teacher ever stopped thinking completely. Okay.

It doesn't help anybody. Alright. Then you become like a vegetable and they take you to the hospital and you can't help people.

Okay. It doesn't mean that you stop your mind or something like that. There's no benefit.

And that's a very old mistake that many people make. You're not going to make this mistake. Okay.

What does it mean that your mind turns things around? How can you fix your mind? Okay.

It's what I mentioned already. If you want to make money, if you stop making a mental mistake, you can make money. Making money is just stupid like brushing your teeth.

You can do it. Then you can make it and do other things that you want to do. Okay.

If you correct your mind, if your mind is doing things correctly, then you don't need to work so hard. You don't need all this trouble making money. Same with your health.

Okay. If you have a health problem. I had a lady who had breast cancer.

She came to me. I said, Stop your jibber-jabber, you know. Stop thinking the wrong way.

And then it will be all right. And she did. And that was a friend, Diana.

That was 20 years ago. Okay. And she's fine.

And she's doing fine. Okay. Or you want a good relationship.

You want to have a nice relationship or you want to fix your relationship. You can do that also. Everything is coming from the mind.

If you fix how your mind is thinking, then that's yoga. And if you have yoga, you can do everything. Yoga is citta-vrtti-nirvana.

Stop thinking the wrong way. Now, I'll give you a five-minute explanation of how to think the wrong way. Okay.

And then probably you don't have to take the rest of the class. All right. But I don't think they will give you a refund.

So, how about the aspirant? Why do people take this? You've got to talk.

Don't sit there. It's hot. You're tired.

I'm tired. But if you don't say something, I'm going to fall asleep. People take this because they have a headache.

Okay. Usually. Most people take it because they have a headache.

Will it work?

[Говорящий 2]
Sometimes.

[Говорящий 1]
Would you get on an airplane if they told you it works sometimes? You wouldn't, right? But you'd take an aspirant if it works sometimes.

I don't know why. I don't know why you guys do this. Do you pay for a bottle?

How many aspirants did you pay for? How many in here? Let's say there's 100 aspirants in here.

How many are going to work? Say something. Say 50.

We don't know. But you paid for 100. You people are crazy.

You pay for 100 aspirants. You know only 50 are going to work. Then you take one and you just hope.

You just hope. You pay for something. That's like going on an airplane that might fall down.

You're funny. You're kind of funny.

[Говорящий 2]
Aspirant won't kill you.

[Говорящий 1]
Won't kill you? Yeah. Aspirant won't kill you.

That's a bad argument. Neither will eating automobile tires. Anyway.

Anyway. Sometimes aspirant works and sometimes it doesn't work. Sometimes you take aspirant on Tuesday and it works.

Then you take the same aspirant from the same bottle on Wednesday and it doesn't work. Right? You don't know when it's going to work or when it's going to work.

Okay? Is the aspirant different from Tuesday and Wednesday? No.

Is it a different chemical? No. The cause is different.

[Говорящий 2]
You can say that. Yeah, for sure.

[Говорящий 1]
Well, it's definitely. Because Tuesday's cause is different from Wednesday's cause. On Tuesday it was your wife and on Wednesday it was your boss.

Yeah, okay. No, there's different causes. There are different conditions.

And we like to think that that's why the aspirant doesn't work on one day and it works on the other. But really your wife is not so different from your boss. Your boss criticizes you and your wife.

Boss is your own.

[Говорящий 2]
Right?

[Говорящий 1]
So they are the same. I mean, really it's not it's not the object or not the condition so much. I'll give you the explanation that Patanjali would give.

And then you can understand everything.

[Говорящий 2]
Alright?

[Говорящий 1]
There is something in your mind that makes the aspirant work on Tuesday. And then there is something in your mind which is missing when you take the aspirant on Wednesday. If you can learn how to put the thing in your mind every day then aspirant will always work for you.

Alright? And so will investments in stocks. And so will discussions with your husband.

Alright? They are all the same. Whether anything you try works or not there is something in your mind.

Something is coming in your mind. Okay? I made a quarter billion dollar business.

My business makes more money than the state that I live in. The southern part of the state. Okay?

Why? My teachers taught me how to plant a seed in your mind. Okay?

So there is a seed that you can put in your mind to get an aspirant to work. Alright? So we don't think about that.

We don't think that way. We think, Oh, aspirant didn't work for me. I should try Tylenol.

Or I should take Advil. Or I should take Aleve. We try a different outside chemical.

Okay? But whether that chemical has power or not is not in the aspirant. Okay?

They say active ingredient is not true. Why? Just answer.

Why? Why is it not true that the active ingredient is active? No, sometimes it's not active.

Okay? Sometimes it doesn't work.

[Говорящий 2]
You're the one who's activating it. That's what you're saying.

[Говорящий 1]
Yeah, I'm saying you have to activate it. You make the active ingredient active.

[Говорящий 2]
Okay?

[Говорящий 1]
Okay? You have to make the active ingredient active. Because it's not active by itself.

Why? Because on Wednesday it doesn't work. Alright?

But on Tuesday it does work. Okay? So, prove it.

Look at jewelry online. Look at jewelry.com. We own it.

The most expensive website in our business. We own it. And I don't work hard.

I don't work very hard. Okay? It's just there.

It comes. Okay? Why?

Because I know how to make the active ingredient active. Alright? So, I'm going to show you how to make the active ingredient active.

Then you will stop thinking of doing things the wrong way. And then you will be doing yoga because Patanjali said yoga is citta-vrtti-nirodha. Okay?

If you want to do yoga, stop thinking about the aspirin the wrong way. Citta-vrtti means taking it wrong way. Nirodha means stop it.

Stop thinking about aspirin the wrong way. The power is not in the aspirin. Okay?

The active ingredient in aspirin is not active. Why? Come, come, come.

Stay with me. Why? Why?

[Говорящий 2]
Because what's in our mind, why is the active ingredient not active? Who?

[Говорящий 1]
Prove it. Yeah, it doesn't always work. Okay?

It's not active. Okay? Help up a little bit.

It's not so hard. How come people are all like so quiet, you know? I like to teach in Shanghai.

Everybody is like, ah, ah, ah.

[Говорящий 2]
Okay.

[Говорящий 1]
Sometimes too noisy. Okay. I'm going to show you how to put a seed in your mind to make the active ingredient in the aspirin active.

[Говорящий 2]
Okay?

[Говорящий 1]
I'm going to show you how to do that. Alright? Here we go.

You have to put a seed in your mind. You have to learn how to put a seed in your mind. The exercise of putting seeds in your mind is already yoga because you don't believe the active ingredient is active anymore.

You're trying a new way. You're stopping how your mind used to turn things around. That's yoga struture.

Here we go. I want to make, I want to put a seed in my mind that will make the aspirin work for me next time. Alright?

I want to put a seed in my mind to make the aspirin work for me. Rule number one. You need another person.

You cannot do it by yourself. You need another person. That's, in this system, other people are very valuable.

Okay? You love to have other people around. You cannot put a seed in your mind to make the aspirin work by yourself.

You need another person. Why? Okay.

You ready? You ready? So, she's going to help me put a seed in my mind.

Hold that. So she has a headache, okay? We are in the yoga class.

I'm looking at her. She's going like this. Okay?

Then I, in this system, to plant seeds, you have to watch other people. You have to look at other people. What do they need?

Okay? Who needs something? She has a headache.

She's going like this, okay? Yeah, well, either she has fleas or she has a headache. Then I'll ask, do you have a headache?

Yeah, okay. So I'm going to help you. I'm going to give you aspirin.

When I, when I let go of the aspirin, with proper technique, with proper understanding, that puts a seed in my mind. That seed will make the next aspirin I take work. More than one, because seed always grows.

Seed always grows. If I give one aspirin, with understanding, with knowing how to do it, which I'm going to teach you, okay, but not tonight, so you have to come back, okay? We have to.

I have to teach you today. You know people who help other people. They give aspirins and they still get headaches, okay?

You know people who plant flowers and the flowers don't grow. You see? It's not enough to plant.

You have to know how to plant, okay? I have a rose garden. I started a rose garden, okay?

I bought a new house. Do you know how much money I paid for the house? Yes.

Nothing. All right? It's a very beautiful, expensive house on the side of a mountain.

Someone gave it to me. All right? Why?

[Говорящий 2]
I planted a seed for a house, okay?

[Говорящий 1]
That's all. I didn't pay a dollar, all right? It's a beautiful house.

It's way up on a high mountain. It's beautiful. Anyway, so I got a new house a few years ago.

I wanted to have a rose garden. I planted all these roses, okay? And then I thought, I want big roses.

So I watered them extra. All right? Double, triple water, okay?

Then they all died, okay? Then I asked my... I hired a rose teacher.

Some old, old lady. She loves to grow roses. I said, come to my house.

Teach me. What did I do wrong? She came to my house.

She said, they're all dead. I said, I know. She said, you killed them.

I said, I know that also. But what did I do? She said, you watered them.

I said, you have to water things or they won't grow. I want big roses. I watered them extra.

She said, the water kills the rose. It drowns the roots, you know? And then the rose will die.

You can't overwater the rose, okay? If you don't know how to plant the seeds in your mind, you won't get anything, all right? You know generous people who help other people.

They're all broke, okay? You know people who help other people with aspirin and they still get headaches, okay? There's technique to the seed planting.

It's like roses, okay? Same thing. So you have to stay with me for three nights.

I'm going to teach you how to do it properly, all right? We're not going to cover that tonight because I'm forcing you to come back, all right? So I give her the aspirin.

I put a seed in my mind. That's what makes the aspirin active. Now I am thinking correctly.

I am not twisting things, okay? Now I'm doing yoga. That's real yoga, okay?

According to this book, this is the oldest book about yoga, okay? 210 lines. How many lines about asanas?

Two or one and a half, okay? Asana is one percent, all right? This thinking is 99 percent, okay?

You want to do asana? Plant a seed for asana. That's asana work.

That's yoga work. It's sometimes. You know, some people hurt their hair, okay?

In New York, they have special yoga class. It's called restorative. I went to the class.

I said, is this new yoga? They said, not exactly. I said, what does it mean, restorative yoga?

They said, all the people come to this class who hurt themselves doing yoga before. It means yoga is like the aspirin, okay? Yoga also like the aspirin.

Aspirin is like the aspirin, okay? Some people, it makes them strong and thin. Some people, it hurts their neck, okay?

It really hurts their neck for their whole life. You can do it in yoga. The yoga is not helping you.

And the yoga doesn't work. You have to know how to plant a seed in your mind. Then do the asana.

Plant a seed in your mind. Then take the aspirin. You see what I mean?

Put the power into the yoga exercises. And then do them and you will be young and thin and you can do ballet if you want to do ballet. I just do ballet because I don't like to go to France.

Okay. Yogas Chaturvarti Niroga. Yoga means stop twisting things around in your mind.

Aspirin doesn't work. Yoga doesn't work. Cars don't work.

Airplanes don't work. This talk doesn't work. Okay?

You have to put a seed in your mind to understand. Some people will leave tonight, they won't come back. They won't understand.

Some people will understand. The talk will work or the talk won't work. Same as the aspirin.

You have to plant the seed. Stop thinking that the thing is in the thing. Okay?

Stop thinking that the power is in the thing. There's no power in aspirin. There's no power in a car.

There's no power in a property investment. And there's no power in my talk. You need to put the power.

And we're going to learn. And that's yoga. Alright?

We finished page one. Let's go to page two. I know I'm behind and you don't have to tell me.

I can't stop talking. Alright. Say Ahimsa.

[Говорящий 2]
Ahimsa.

[Говорящий 1]
Patishthayam.

[Говорящий 2]
Patishthayam.

[Говорящий 1]
Tatsanidhau. Tatsanidhau. Vairatyagra.

Vairatyagra. Ahimsa. Ahimsa.

Patishthayam. Patishthayam. Tatsanidhau.

Tatsanidhau. Vairatyagra. Vairatyagra.

This is a beautiful line from the second chapter of the Yoga Sutra that explains a lot about the seeds in your mind. Okay? It's a very beautiful thing about the seeds in your mind.

What's Ahimsa? There's no such thing as Ahimsa. Okay?

It doesn't exist. The word is Ahimsa with an N. Okay?

It's misspelled by 99% of the people in the world who never studied Sanskrit. Okay? Say Ahimsa.

[Говорящий 2]
Ahimsa.

[Говорящий 1]
Okay? And then you can correct people. It's fun.

Your whole life you can correct people. Okay? Ahimsa means...

Ah means not. It came into Greek. It's called the privative A in grammar.

It means not. Like atheistic or apolitical or apathetic. It means not.

Okay? A means not. Initial A means not.

Short A. Long A means very much. So you're going to distinguish between Ah and Ah.

Say Ah. Ah. Ah.

Ah. Ah. Ah.

Ah. Ah. If you say Ahimsa, it means very violent.

[Говорящий 2]
Okay?

[Говорящий 1]
You can correct that also. If you say Ah, Ahimsa. It means nonviolent.

Okay? Big difference, right? Yin came into English in the word gun.

Okay? The root is hun. The root of the Sanskrit word is hun.

And it came into English as gun. So Ahimsa means what? No violence.

No guns. Ahimsa means not. Ahimsa.

Pratishtayam means if you live that way as a way of life. If you follow Ahimsa. Pratishtam.

Prati means usually. Stam means to stand. Pratishtayam means live that way over a long period of time.

Ahimsa pratishtayam means if you keep a practice of nonviolence regularly. Okay? As a way of life.

Vairatyaga. Okay? At the end it says Vairatyaga.

Vaira means conflict. Fighting. Tyaga means you can get rid of it.

You won't have. You won't have violence. You won't have conflict in where?

Jat Sanidha. Say it. Jat.

Sanidha.

[Говорящий 2]
Sanidha.

[Говорящий 1]
Jat Sanidha means in your presence. There will be no violence. In your presence.

There will be no violence. Give me the. Can I borrow that aspirin again?

If I make it a way of life to help other people who have headaches. If I make it a habit. In my life.

To help other people who have headaches. Then the aspirin will work. Okay?

[Говорящий 2]
Right?

[Говорящий 1]
I mean according to what I said. You check it out. You don't have to believe me.

Just try. Okay? Try to make money like this.

It's very fun. Like just money comes to you. Alright?

It's fun. You have to think about it. Then you can do other stuff.

Okay? Now I have a question for you. Uh.

Will it work for Vicky? Will the aspirin work for Vicky? Same aspirin.

[Говорящий 2]
It depends on whether I helped other people.

[Говорящий 1]
Yeah. It depends on whether she helped other people. So can we say.

Uh. What this verse Tat Sanidha means. If you make it a habit.

Not to hurt other people. Then for you. Violence will stop.

For you. There will not be violence. Tat Sanidha means for you.

Why did Master Patanjali say for you? Well because other people if they don't make the seat. They will see violence.

Okay? Other people will see violence. In the same place.

Two people can walk into a store. And the owner of the store will cheat one of them. And you know this.

And they won't cheat the other person. Okay? You play your favorite song.

For your friend. Okay? Then they will say the worst thing in the world.

What's that? You heard a new song. I saw a new movie.

It's called Adjustment Bureau. I saw a new movie in Singapore. It's called Adjustment.

I saw it here also. I went to that movie. It's like the best movie I ever saw in my life.

Okay? Now tomorrow maybe you're going to go. After you do your homework.

Or you can go with your friend to the movie theater. And you're going to see the movie. Will you like it?

Be honest. Yeah, say maybe. Okay?

Maybe. It's like aspirin. Okay?

It's like an aspirin. It depends on the scene in my mind. If I put the scene in my mind, I will see a beautiful movie.

If you didn't put the scene in your mind, you will see a stupid movie. We can sit together in the same movie. And we come out of the movie.

And then I say, How did you like it? I say, That was my favorite movie. And then you're going to say the worst insult which is possible.

You will say, It was very interesting. Like you cook a new food for your boyfriend. Right?

And you work for three hours. You're shopping for four hours. Then you cook the dinner for your boyfriend.

And then he eats it. Then you say, How did you like it? He says, It was interesting.

You know that. He doesn't want to say it to his family. He says, It was interesting.

That's a polite way to say it. I don't like it. So two people eating the same food.

All right? One person has a C. The other person doesn't have a C.

If you stop hurting other people, then you will not be hurt. Okay? That's all.

See, same idea. If you have people with a headache, your aspirin will work. But the same aspirin that works for you may not work for another person.

Because they don't have the C. That's the line. I think that's the most beautiful line in the Yoga Siddha.

That's the most powerful line. The most important part is Tatsa Nidha. Tatsa Nidha means for you.

But maybe not for other people. All right? Okay, Anna, I'm speeding up.

He wants me to stop kicking his microphone. It's not going to work. All right, here we go.

Hmm. Okay, these are the five... We're going to study how the mind gets twisted.

All right? We're going to study how you mess up things. All right?

And that comes from the second chapter of the Yoga Siddha. It's very important. All right?

Say klesha.

[Говорящий 2]
Klesha.

[Говорящий 1]
Klesha.

[Говорящий 2]
Klesha.

[Говорящий 1]
Klesha means negative emotions. Negative emotions. Klesha means negative emotions.

There are five emotions which cause you problems. There are five of them which cause you problems. He calls them ignorance, selfless, liking, disliking, and grasping.

Okay? He calls them ignorance, selfless, liking, disliking, and grasping. Okay?

Hmm. Let me think of a good example. Oh, okay.

This famous example. Uh... I like your job.

Okay? Uh... What do you call it?

[Говорящий 2]
Your job, why?

[Говорящий 1]
I love that. Okay? In every country.

In Mexico, they call... What do they call it? Churro.

Churro. It's the same. In America, they call it Dunkin' Donuts.

Okay? Same. Okay?

I love them in every country. Okay? So I'm going to give an example.

So you like your job with your job, why?

[Говорящий 2]
With your job, why? With your job, why?

[Говорящий 1]
With sugar. Special kind of sugar. Okay?

Like the sprinkle sugar. Then, uh... You go to your job, why?

Uh... Store. To buy one.

Right? And you are walking in, and you can see they have one more yong cha kuai with sugar. Here.

The kind that you like. You can see it from the door. In the...

In the counter. You can see. Yeah?

Then you walk in. Then one old woman comes in behind you with her husband. I hope they have the yong cha kuai with the...

With the sugar. I really like the one with the sugar. You know?

Then you can hear her. She's moving pretty fast. Then, uh...

You have to walk faster. Okay? First job, you have to pretend you didn't hear her.

Then you have to walk very fast in the counter. And you're going to say, I like the one with the sugar, please. Okay?

Uh... That's grasping. That's grasping.

That's the last one. Okay? That's the last one.

We're going to go backwards. Okay? That's grasping.

Is it wrong to enjoy yong cha kuai? Is it a wrong thing? Is it a bad thing to be...

To be happy? No, I mean some Buddhist people, they say, don't eat yong cha kuai. Why?

You enjoy it. Then, I don't understand. What's wrong?

[Говорящий 2]
What's wrong with enjoying it?

[Говорящий 1]
You know, you see the picture of the Buddha Paradise, right? They have lots of yong cha kuai. Then you say, you say, why I can't have yong cha kuai?

You can't enjoy anything, you know? This is a stupid idea. Why do people live?

They want to be happy. You know, I'm going to teach you how to get yong cha kuai. I'm not going to tell you, don't eat them.

Okay? So grasp it, but in this case, grasping is klesha. Grasping is a bad thing.

Why? You hurt somebody else to get the thing. The test of whether you are doing the right thing or the wrong thing, whether enjoying is good or bad, doesn't hurt anybody.

Okay? Generally, it's not wrong to enjoy yong cha kuai. Okay?

It's okay. It's a good thing. Okay?

But, if you are taking it from somebody else, then that's a mistake. That's grasping. So that kind of enjoyment where you hurt somebody else, for example, in relationship, it's very common.

Right? You meet some new guy in Starbucks, you know, and he's saying, hey, you're kind of cute, you know? You want to do homework together?

And then, he says, then you see he has a ring. And then, you don't care. You see?

You want him. And you don't care it's going to hurt somebody else. That's grasping.

It's not wrong to meet a nice guy. And it's not wrong to meet a cute guy. And it's not wrong to ask him to do homework with you.

But don't hurt other people. You see? It shouldn't hurt other people.

That makes it wrong. If it hurts somebody else, that makes it wrong. Now, excuse me, go ahead.

How do you say it in business? In business? Yeah.

Anything which is legal is okay. Okay. You can be tough.

How about pushing people? Does it hurt them? It hurts the other person.

Yeah, then it's wrong. Then it's wrong. If it hurts somebody, it's wrong.

Why? It puts a bad seed in your mind and you won't get what you want. What makes it wrong?

You won't get what you want. If you do those things, you won't get what you want. Okay?

That's all. If you steal somebody else's boyfriend, then somebody will steal him in six months. Because you put this seed in your mind by stealing him.

It's dumb. It's just stupid. Okay?

If you understand this system, it's stupid to hurt other people. That's all. Because you hurt yourself.

It just doesn't work. If it worked, maybe we could discuss it. But it doesn't work.

Okay, anyway. So now, two questions before that. Radha and Dvesha.

Say Radha. Radha. Dvesha.

Dvesha. Radha. Radha.

Dvesha. Dvesha. Radha means liking things.

Dvesha means liking things. How often in the day do you have Radha and Dvesha?

[Говорящий 2]
Every day.

[Говорящий 1]
Every second. You say, it's too hard. This guy talking too much.

I like the class. I don't like the asanas. All day long you are saying, I like, I don't like, I like, I don't like, I like, I don't like.

Is it wrong to like something? I would like to help the people in Japan. I would like to raise some money and send them some help.

Is that wrong?

[Говорящий 2]
No.

[Говорящий 1]
You can't say it's wrong to like things. Okay? There's a good liking and there's a bad liking.

What's a good liking? You want to help other people. Alright?

Or at least you're not hurting other people. What's a wrong liking?

[Говорящий 2]
You can't hurt other people.

[Говорящий 1]
Yeah, you hurt somebody. You meet the guy. He's married already.

You're going to hurt his wife. You're going to hurt. So that kind of liking is wrong.

So in here, we're talking about wrong liking. Okay? Wrong liking.

And wrong disliking. Is it wrong to dislike the nuclear reactor in Japan which is blowing up right now? No.

It's not wrong. You should dislike it. Okay?

Is it wrong to dislike the guy's wife? That's wrong. Okay?

You see? You know. You know that.

Okay? Liking which hurts somebody is wrong. Disliking which hurts somebody is wrong.

Disliking which helps other people is right. Liking which helps other people is right. Okay?

That's all. This one is wrong. In this list, it's wrong.

Okay? Why? Because it's based in selfness.

Asmita. Say asmita. Asmita.

Asmita means selfness. It's a very confusing word. What does selfness mean?

Is this aspirin itself? Is the aspirin itself? No.

Good. Excellent. Good answer.

He said the aspirin is not the aspirin because part of the aspirin is coming from me. The aspirin is not itself because the power of the aspirin is coming from me. It's a very, very good answer.

Asmita means you think that things are themselves and not coming from me. Okay? The power of the aspirin is coming from me.

That's why tatsanita. If I give the aspirin, the aspirin will work for me. If she doesn't give the aspirin, the aspirin will not work for her.

Is the aspirin the aspirin? Does the aspirin have an active ingredient? No.

Okay? I make the active ingredient active. So you can say the aspirin is not itself.

If you think that things are themselves then you have asmita. Selfness. What's wrong with that?

Then you will like something that hurts other people. You will misunderstand it as well. If she needs an aspirin and I need an aspirin what should I do?

[Говорящий 2]
Give it to her.

[Говорящий 1]
Why? Because you're a nice person? It's the only way to get the aspirin to work.

You must give it. You don't have a choice. You have to be nice.

If you understand the system you have to share things with other people. You don't have a choice. If you like yotau kuai you must give it to other people.

You don't have a choice. You have to take it and give it to the old lady. You don't have a choice.

Why? Then you put the seed in your mind and everywhere you go there will be yotau kuai. Everywhere I go there's some yotaus.

Everywhere. Every country house. They come to my door.

Sometimes they walk. Sometimes they fly. They come to my door.

It's very strange. You have to share. If you want you have to share.

This, as we taught, means you don't understand. You take the last one. You walk faster than the old woman.

You take the last one. No, really. That's based on avidya.

Kriya number one. Kriya number one is avidya. What is avidya?

A means not. Vid means to know. It came into the word video or wisdom or vice.

It means to know. Vidya means don't understand. Why?

Don't understand the aspirant. You think the aspirant is itself. You think the power of the aspirant is in the aspirant.

That's avidya. But avidya in this in this verse it refers to a bigger avidya, okay? It refers to where you're Why didn't you think about aspirant this way when you were a kid?

I mean, even as a child as a young child you already begin to misunderstand things. You think the power is in the aspirant. Okay?

You believe that. Even as a child small child you believe the power is in the aspirant. That mistaken idea yogas chitta vrtti that mistaken idea it was born with you.

You were born with it. You had it when you were born. When you came into this life you had that.

Everybody who is born in this world has that in their mind when they are born. The mind is how do you call it? Defective from the beginning, okay?

The human mind in this world not every place. There are other worlds that don't have this power. In this world, when you are born you already have avidya.

You are, what do you call it? Hardwired. It's part of your mind.

And you must correct it with training. And then you can make money. I mean, the whole world is struggling for money.

It's not necessary. It's easy to make. You stop avidya.

Stop thinking about the wrong way. Money is easy. And you don't have to get sick.

You don't have to have those problems. They are not necessary. They are just a mistake.

Just people didn't understand and then all these problems start. You don't need to do that. You can make money.

You can fix a bone in your leg. You can do ballet when you can't walk before. You just have to understand you were built with a you were made with a deter in the factory.

And you can fix it. And then your life becomes a lot of fun. I have fun.

Your husband is a problem? Just fix him. Whatever you don't like, you can fix.

Then I have all these nice people around me all the time. I make them. Nice.

Okay. Next page. What time am I supposed to stop for?

8 o'clock? That's pretty optimistic. How am I doing?

Am I halfway? No? Sure.

I did like four things. No? I'm not halfway?

We'll do one more line fast. I'll do two minutes. Ready?

Say Dreshamula. Dreshamula. Karmashayo.

Dershta Dershta. Dershta Dershta. Janmabhedanya.

Janmabhedanya. Dershta Dershta is the important one here. Dershta means seeing.

You know Durshti, right? They mispronounce it. Drishti.

Okay? It's like talking like Bible. Can't understand how they did the Sanskrit because nobody understands how to pronounce Sanskrit.

Even people in India don't know how to pronounce Sanskrit. It's Durshti. It's not Drishti.

It's Durshti. Durshti means your gaze, right? How you look.

In this verse, Dershta Dershta means you can see it or you cannot see it. We learned Dershta means not see, right? Dershta means do you want an English word that comes from Durshti?

Just see? Dersht? The root is Dersht, okay?

It came into the word dragon. The word dragon comes from Durshti. Why?

Because they have an evil eye. It meant the animal with the evil eye. Dersht means to see.

So anyway, that's the only English word, I'm sorry, that I know. So Durshti means seen. Dershta means not seen.

So my Lama, you know, he gave me a job. He said, I was studying the monastery. I finished 20 years.

I got a big yellow hat. Very difficult. First white guy, called Geshe.

That's Geshe. Then he said you have new examination. You go to New York, you make money.

Using what I taught you, make a million dollars. Prove to me you learned how to change reality. We'll give the money to the poor people.

We gave all the money to the poor people. He said, prove to me you know how to change reality. So I went and I did it, okay?

But before I left, I asked another old monk. I said, do you have any advice for me? And then he gave me some advice.

How to make the million dollars. I didn't want to go to New York. I'm happy in the monastery.

I hate New York. So he said, he gave me some advice. Then I said, oh Rinpoche, how long will it take to get the million dollars?

He said, next life. That old monk. Then I said, wait, wait, wait.

Rinpoche, I'm American. We invented You know American Embassy? It has a big sign like that.

In every country, this is the American Embassy. It's called the Tibetans call it Matano. Matano means, I said, Rinpoche, I'm from America.

We invented Matano. We don't want to wait till next life. Next life means Adarshita.

Adarshita in this verse means, you're going to see it later. Not seen in this life. Adarshita, not seen in this life.

Janma means lifetime. Vedanya means you will see it. You will experience it.

I don't want Adarshita Vedanya. I want Darshita. Darshita means you see it in this life.

Then I told Rinpoche, I don't even want to wait 10 years or 5 years. I want 6 months. I want 8 months.

I want million dollars in 8 months or 6 months. I don't want to wait. So my company is the fastest growing company in the history of New York.

Manufacturing company. New York City. That ever existed in New York City.

How? You just have to know the way. Darshita, Darshita, Janma.

Klesha, Karma, Asha. So you have to know how to make things Darshita. How to make the seed grow fast.

And don't have to wait till Adarshita. So we are interested in making it fast. Ok?

That's all. We are going to learn how to make things fast. And we'll start that after the break.

How to speed things up. So we'll take a 10-15 minute break. Ok, a couple things.

I'll stay here. I'll stay here. If you have a question that you want to ask me, just come up.

Ok? Or you want to say hi. Or you want to bring me something to eat.

That's ok. So I'll stay here. Then come back in 10 minutes and we'll keep going.

Ok? Thank you. Thank you.

Alright.
