[Speaker 2] I need a connection to this something, somehow, Wi-Fi or something, I don't know. [Speaker 1] Can you guys show a word screen? Can you show a word screen? I might need internet. Can I get on the internet? Can you help him get on the internet? Well, how do I show my screen? Do you want to air drop it? It's your homework, right? That's the, that's the. Do you want to air drop it? You can air drop it. Do you want to air drop it? [Speaker 2] Do you need my help? Yeah. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. All right, are we ready? Yeah. [Speaker 1] Thank you, sir. All right. Hello. We just had some technical stuff to work out. Hi, everybody. Good morning. Yeah, so we're starting 10 minutes late, so we'll go 10 minutes late. Yeah. All right. Okay, so my book. So I've been working on mind only texts for about. 100 years. Past life doesn't count. It's like seven or eight years now. We started with this book. And it's called the difficult points in the mind only school. By Jason Kappa. Okay. And then. It was too hard for us. And so that's how the golden key came about. We then. Oh, yeah, by the way, we're going to be. Signing copies of the golden key. As a fundraiser. For the mixed nuts. And we're going to be signing copies. Because we keep having children. Ben Kramer and Nick. Oh, yeah, here's my book. So we, so we had to do this book to help us with the book we're doing now. And then we went back to this book. By Jason Kappa. And it's a book about the two extra consciousnesses in the mind only school. Most schools have six. Most schools have six. And the mind only school has eight. Two extra. Right. So. That's the main topic of the book. And now we're in the second part of the book. That's talking all about the negative consciousness. According to mind only school. There's a part of your mind that makes you have all your problems. And somehow if you can stop that, you can stop your problems. So we're trying to figure that out so we can stop my problems. All right. Thank you. And so this is our homework. If you weren't here for the last class. Good luck. Okay. Here we go. In last class. Closer. Closer. Closer. Better. Okay. In last class. What did we learn about the feeling of happiness? As concerns the negative consciousness. Specifically. What kind of happiness is it? Online. Please help. Someone took notes. Say what. That's true. Do you remember what Alex, do you remember what kind of. Happiness it was. Was it regular happiness? That's okay. That's more than I expected. Anybody. Okay. Okay. Once twice. Don't worry if you don't know any of this. Okay. I barely know it. That kind of happiness is a kind of ignorant desire. Cause we're in the park. That's talking about negative consciousness. And what. Negative emotions. It's linked to and how that works. So that's why that came up. Okay. Question two. What are the nine mental functions that. Are in negative consciousnesses. Retinue. It's group. Who does it hang out with? Nope. We did talk about distraction though. Huh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All those things. What are those? Yes. I don't think so. Maybe. I have a doubt. Go ahead. We had pride. Yeah. Good. Not jealousy, but. There's five and then there's four. The five that always go with the mind and then the four negative emotions. Does that help? [Speaker 2] Like no shame. [Speaker 1] I'll be darned. Who? Does someone know? Come on, Chloe. You take good notes. [Speaker 2] Contact. [Speaker 1] Yes. [Speaker 2] Feeling. [Speaker 1] Yes. [Speaker 2] Am I getting 100 each word? [Speaker 1] What's that? 100 pennies. [Speaker 2] I'll take it. Attention. [Speaker 1] Uh-huh. [Speaker 2] Turning. Turning the mind to its object. [Speaker 1] Yeah. [Speaker 2] Like that. [Speaker 1] Okay. Okay. That's good. Yay! Good, Chloe. Someone pay that lady. Okay. Movement of the mind. Attention. Feeling. Discrimination. Contact. Ignorant desire. Misunderstanding. Pride. And view of a self, which is self-existent. That's them. Okay. Third and final question. Why can't more mental functions exist? Can more mental functions be associated with negative consciousness? I didn't write the book, okay? [Speaker 2] I just made homework. Something about their detail applied to the original four? [Speaker 1] Yay! That's exactly right. Wow! Yeah. Other additional mental functions would just be ones that were founded upon the four main mental affliction and would not increase the count. Good. Okay, some language. What do these mean? Gupo, gupa, and gu? Yeah, which one's nine? Great. What's gupa? Nice. Who said that? [Speaker 2] How do you know that? [Speaker 1] What about gupo? Gupo was the one in the book. I put the other ones to help y'all learn. Gupo means all nine, okay? And so in this language, if you put po at the end, it means all. If you say pa, it becomes ordinal, like first, second, third, ninth. And then without either of those things, it's just a raw number. Okay, and chanye? Chanye? Yeah, wrong spelling. Chanye, same exact pronunciation. Means art of interpretation. But this spelling means... I know Nick knows. Nick, answer. He's like, what? It's not three- Sorry, you mean, yeah, you got it already, okay. Yeah, the exact number. Fixed number, yeah. A fixed number, an exact number, exactly. Thank you, Nick. And then gu was the only really new word we had. It's hard, it's impossible. What? Wow, you took notes. Are you paying attention during my class? Weird. Separately or in addition? That's it. [Speaker 2] Yay! [Speaker 1] Where's my translation? Can you read it? Sure. Eat the mic. Okay. [Speaker 2] More eating? [Speaker 1] Okay. Sounds a little loud. Okay. See? See? Here we go. So, as words said, there's six kinds, normally there's six kinds of consciousness. It's like in the heart center. Eye, ear, nose, tongue, ear, mouth. In the heart center, it goes down your body. Eye, ear, nose, tongue, ear, mouth. Switch? Okay. And then in the Mainomi school, which is a very beautiful, very deep school just under the Middle Way school, they say, no, you have to add two kinds of consciousness. Two more. And one is very interesting, KUN ZHI, which means AA LA'I'A VIS NYA NA, which means the storehouse consciousness. This is where all your karmic seeds live. All of your karmic seeds are in a seventh consciousness. And he has a long commentary on that. We finished it. It's very complex, very beautiful. Basically in the Mainomi school, when you see things outside, like color of her blouse, red color, then you're actually looking at something inside your own mind. There is no outside colors. This is Mainomi school, which is why they're called Mainomi. Beautiful. So inside of a seventh consciousness, your seeds are opening, and you're mistaking that for the outside world. Then there's the nasty extra consciousness, which is focused on the seventh one, and misunderstands it. His whole function, his whole life, his whole raison d'etre. Is to misunderstand the world. So that's called negative consciousness. Negative consciousness watches storehouse consciousness. Storehouse consciousness then spits out your normal senses. So we're discussing negative consciousness. And some of the questions we're asking is, when do you get rid of it? Can you lobotomy? Can you take out that consciousness from a human being? What's left after that? And then they're discussing the characteristics of this seventh, they call it consciousness number seven. Storehouse is considered number eight. Negative consciousness is considered number seven. And we're treating seven or eight parameters of that consciousness. Where is it? When does it end? How did it start? There's seven or eight questions, and we're in the middle of the end. And we're talking about where does it exist? On what level? Basically, the universe divides in Buddhism into nine levels. Desire realm, form realm, formless realm. Then the form realm has four levels, and the formless realm has four levels. So it's nine levels. Desire realm, we're in the desire realm. Four form realm levels, four formless realm levels. Where is this negative consciousness? What level is it on? How do you decide what level it's on? And that's the question today. That's where we reach today. So here's a word's translation. First of all, meaning if the person is at the desire realm level, is their mind always at the desire realm level? Yes or no? When you see emptiness directly, your body is in the desire realm. Your mind is in the form realm. For example, because it's so focused, your mind is hot. Your mind is actually in a different world at that moment. So here we say, is that negative consciousness always at the same level as the person? Or not? Could they be at different levels? Here's the answer. If they're at the same level, if they're always at the same level, then an individual in the desire realm who was a non-arya would be free of desire. Why? ,'DOD PA'I SROG BSKYED CI GYIS, ,'DOD PA LA CHAGS PA MA BRAL BA NA, Yeah, he's saying, this is an objection from the other guy. Can you live in the desire realm and be free of desire? Can you live in this world and not have desire? Yeah, and there are people who temporarily, like if your mother dies. My mom is dying this week. And then you don't think about cake when you're at her house. So you're temporarily freed from desire. So, ,DANG PO LTAR NA, ,'DOD PA'I SROG BSKYED CI GYIS, ,'DOD PA LA CHAGS PA DANG BRAL BA NA, If the negative state of mind is always at the same level as the person, then when a person's mother's dying and they're living in the desire realm, and the last thing they can think about is desire for ice cream or something, then are you saying, ,NYON NYID MIN RDOG PA'I, ,'DOD PA'I NYON MONGS RGYUR, Then you have to be saying they could not get rid of their negative state of mind because it follows where they live. If the location of the negative state of mind is always the location of the person, then if the person's in the desire realm, then they should always have that negative state of mind. Even if they lost desire for a week. Got it? So that's an objection. The other guy's objecting. Some people can live in the desire realm and for a while, when their mom's dying, they don't have, they're not thinking about ice cream. There are people in the desire realm who don't have desire. So are you saying they don't have a negative state of mind? Because it has to be where they live. RGYUR GYUR LA SBYUG PA'I RGYUR RO, Then they should have a negative emotion directly inside their mind. RGYUR means directly. What's the opposite of that? As a potential, as a potential. So do those people whose mom is dying, do they have, and they live in the desire realm, do they have desire or not? Not, we say not manifest desire, but they have the seeds. Two weeks after their mom's passed away, they're going to want ice cream again. Seriously. So we still have desire, we just have the seeds for it. We don't have the manifest desire. So that's one possibility. Maybe the location of the negative state of mind doesn't follow the location of the person. Maybe it's on a different level. Here's a second possibility. Please, choose someone to read, Dr. Lee. Okay, again. Who wants to read? Ooh, Ann, okay. Go ahead, please. [Speaker 2] Thank you. Nipa, Tama. Oh, wait, I cannot see. Okay. Tende kunshi laun yit ko che ke pari su. Che pe do pe nyom mong nam ke pa mi. RGYUD ROL ZHES NA Ooh, yay! [Speaker 1] So is it the case, NYID PA LTAR NA means, okay, so if the negative consciousness doesn't follow the location of the person, then is it possible you could have a negative consciousness at a different level than the person? The person is in the desire realm and their mind, for example, when you see emptiness directly, your mind is not in this world. Your mind is on a different level. Your mind is in a different world. So is that possible? Could you have negative consciousness exist on a different level than the person? The guy is going to... ZHES NA at the end means what? Question. So these two paragraphs are an objection from the other guy. There's problems if you say the negative state of mind is at the same level as the person, and there's problems if you say it's not at the same level as the person. Either way, there's problems. What's the problems if they're not at the same level? YID PHYI'I KHUR DU SHES BDAG TU BSAD PAS RIGS SU BYAS PAS If they're not at the same level, one of the functions of negative consciousness is to be attached to me. But if the me is at a different level, how is it going to do its thing? BSTOD PA'I NYON MO RNAMS BSKYED PA MI RGYUD RO Then how could that person get mental afflictions? How could they have NYON MO? You get mental afflictions in this case because you're attached to yourself. Me. But if me is on a different level, you can't even perceive it, then are you saying that person is an arhat? Because they can't have mental afflictions. Got it? There's problems if you say the person's at the same level as their negative state of mind. And there's problems if you say they're not at the same level. And that's the guy saying, how do you resolve this? Who wrote the question? Tsongkhapa. So it's a tough question. He's not interested in easy questions. He never writes an easy question. Translating him is frustrating. He only wants to talk about hard things. It's very frustrating. You can work on Tsongkhapa book for two, three years and there's nothing you understand. Okay, all right. All right, next one. Okay. Someone want to read? [Speaker 2] Okay, Bertha. Sorry. Go ahead. Nice. [Speaker 1] Tsongkhapa wrote a poem called Difficult Points in the Mind of the School and it is. And we have bolded, the bold color, the darker color is the quotation directly from his poetry. And it's one of the only cases where you get three vowels. DE'I'O Say DE'I'O. DE'I'O DE'I'O DE'I'O DE'I'O And it's often misspelled in the manuscripts, but here we corrected it. DE'I'O The negative consciousness exists at the level where that kang, sorry, at the level, kang du, where that person, kye pa, was born. You want to know where's the negative consciousness located. It's at the level where the person was born. That's the answer. That's Tsongkhapa's answer. And he says, if you answer the question this way, GCIG BSHAD PA'I KHYUN DU GYUR BA'I PHYIR PHYOG GNYIS PA SKAD MI NEN NO If I say they exist at the same level that they're born at, BYUNG BA DANG, GCIG BSHAD PA'I KHYUN DU GYUR BA'I PHYIR you get this problem that you were talking about. PHYOG GNYIS PA SKAD MI NEN NO I cannot accept the second idea. I cannot accept the second option above. Second option above was if they're not at the same level as them. If you say the negative consciousness is not at the same level as the person, I can't agree with that because the root text says the same one where they were born. They must be at the same level or you're going to have the second problem. Again. Yeah. Jason Koppel's poem, is he quoting Rastafari Sabando in the poem? Because I think it's in both. [Speaker 2] Yeah. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Better? [Speaker 1] Good. That's it again. Your turn. I'm a little suspicion of the GNYIS PA here. Isn't it the second point? I was thinking it should be like- I think it's GNYIS PO. It should be both, right? [Speaker 2] Yeah. [Speaker 1] That's what I- I think it's GNYIS PO. That's what I thought, but then it said GNYIS PA, but it seemed like it should be both of these are wrong. Can you mark it? And then we got to check. Yeah, this is not the text. Yeah, because Tsongkhapa's typical answer would be, I don't accept either option. Everything's wrong. Okay. Yeah. So, if someone miscarved it, then we're in trouble. So, we're going to- Your book. Your copy. That's on there. Yeah. You got my computer? Yep. Okay. Switch. Let's switch. Go ahead. Good game. Okay. Oh, yeah. Okay, I'm not going to go through that. Okay. No. Yeah? Yeah, we'll just- Okay. We'll just do this. Okay. Do you want to choose someone to read? Sure. Stanley. Do you want to do the cursor? Yeah. Thank you. CHOG DANG PO means- The first side? The first point? The first possibility. Yeah, the first position? Which was that they are at the same- What was it? On the same level, right? Yeah. Yeah, if you say that the negative consciousness is on the same level as the person. Okay. CHOG DANG PO So, CHOG DANG PO means first option. If you follow the first option. So, maybe just the first option. RKYEN BRJOD PA MA YIN It could be. Yeah. Then, isn't there a problem? Wouldn't there be a problem? And Tsongkhapa answers, who's going to read that? Stanley didn't do much. Yes, Stanley. As usual. Come on, get to work. Just kidding. RKYEN BRJOD PA MA YIN bar, chepa, lepid. Nice. Good. So here's the problem. Is the negative consciousness always at the same level as the person? And if you say yes, then let's take a person who's born into the desire realm. Are you saying that they always have a negative consciousness at the same level as them? And we say yes. And then we say, are you saying there's no such thing as a person in the desire realm who drops their desire for a while, who gets rid of their desire? For example, if their mom gets very ill or something, are you saying there's no such thing? Got it? Okay. Because nyunyi, the negative state of mind, never stops. You can be born a million times. It will never stop. It follows you always. So therefore, how could it be at the same level as the person if the, is the person at the desire realm? Yes. Do they have negative state of mind? Yes. Is that state of mind having desire? Yes. Even when their mom dies. Okay. That's the problem. That's the problem. Then we say, nyepa med te. No problem. No problem. Okay. By the way, it's a reference to a thing called chak jel. Say chak jel. [Speaker 2] Chak jel. [Speaker 1] Chak means devoid of? Yeah, you don't have chak. You don't have desire. There is such a thing as a person in the desire realm who doesn't have desire. And we gave an example. A person who's having strong renunciation for a week. Okay. They don't think about ice cream. So, nyepa med te. DOD PA'I SOGS RGYAS. So if we restrict our discussion to SOGS RGYAS. Non-Aryas. Yeah, non-Aryas. So forget Aryas. I'm not talking about Aryas. They're special. But DOD PA'I SOGS RGYAS. If you're talking about normal people in the desire realm, DOD PA LA CHAGS PA DANG BRAL. DOD BRAL. CHAGS BRAL. It is possible for them, for those people to at times lack desire. Yeah, they dropped desire. Okay. What level are they at? Desire. Born into the desire realm. Do they have desire? Not this week. Okay. Not manifest desire. They never got rid of their subconscious desire. And it comes back with a vengeance three weeks after the funeral. At the funeral. I've seen it. There's a lot of eating. Okay. Yeah, really. so he says, if a person's not an Arya, they're born in the desire realm, and we say they don't have desire for a while, BYAS PA NI, we're talking mainly about certain kinds of temporary desirelessness. And he gives three examples. Classically, when you say CHAGS BRAL, no desire, about a person who lives in the desire realm, it's a reference to three temporary kinds of no desire. And here's the three examples. Number one, GCIGS PA LA CHAGS PA DANG GIS RGYAS SO BA, SO BA Mainly sex. Yeah, GCIGS PA is the Tibetan word for sex. And it means to embrace each other, but it's the word for sex. Okay. So there are people in the desire realm who overcome the desire for sex, which is a basic human, it's almost an inseparable part of a human being, but there are people, great saints, et cetera, who have overcome it. But 99.999, we have it. And you might as well be honest about it. And you have to be careful with it. So he says, number one, there is a desirelessness of people who practice for many years not to have sex. The people in the monastery that I went to, they were really celibate. And they were unbelievable. They had great power and great kindness, great compassion. So it is possible. CHAGS SBYO It's first example. Second example. GZHI MED KYI LA'ANG THOB PA People who have attained a certain level of meditation? Yeah, people who are capable of deep meditation are not capable of thinking about ice cream at that time. All right? So he says, they don't have YI MI BDE BA. They don't have a mind which can have certain kinds of happiness? Unhappiness. Oh, happiness. They're incapable of unhappiness while you're in deep meditation. It's not possible. You can't be unhappy and be in deep meditation. It's not possible. He's equating what with unhappiness? Desire. Desire. He doesn't say those people in deep meditation have no desire. He says, those people in deep meditation are free of unhappiness. And the implication is desire is a kind of unhappiness. Got it? They don't have unhappiness, therefore they don't have desire. Attraction or desire for food and sex. These are the two examples. So there's two examples. The second guy is in deep meditation. The first guy has practiced celibacy for many years and is good at it. And by the way, it takes time. It takes 10, 15 years to get good at it. Okay. And the third one, ,SDU YIN NGA LA CHAGS PA MNGON GYIR BA RGYUD DONG BA NI, They don't have, their RGYUD is not SDU BA. Yeah, their mind is not tortured. By CHAGS PA to the SDU YIN NGA. Oh, by desire towards the five sense objects. Yeah, some people, like Anatole drives me crazy. He just doesn't seem to have desire for food. And it's really irritates me. I have to fight it every day. And he's like, no, I don't want that. I'll have a cucumber. So there are people like that. So then he gives us three examples. I'll tell you a funny story. I was sitting with him at the pool in Chalapa. And he was there with Ayesha and Kirti was there. And I said, can I give Kirti a donut? Because they never give him a donut, ever. And I gave Kirti a donut and he went into a tantrum. I've never seen him. He got angry and upset and running around. So if you never eat that stuff, ever, if your parents don't eat it, they don't have it in the house. And then you give it to them. And then people come to me and they say, I'm having trouble with my kid. And I'm like, how many cookies do you give him every day? Like six. Okay, duh. Anyway, okay. GAC CHER TE GYIS CHAGS DANG Who's going to read it? You? No. I don't know. I did that. Rivas. Rivas. [Speaker 3] Yeah, thanks. [Speaker 1] Gracias. [Speaker 3] GAC CHER TE GYIS CHAGS DANG NGANG SHIKSAN PADPA YIN GYI NYUM JIT DINI DAKTA LHAN KYE DANG SUNG DEN YIM PE DEE GYEN POY THU DOK PA LA SAK MED KYI MEC KYI ZHES RAB KYE DGUG PA YIN PA'I PHYIR RO Nice. [Speaker 1] Awesome. This is maybe a new word for some of you people. PHYIR TE means focused on the outside. It's an unusual use of PHYIR. Focused on the outside. I would not have put instrumental here. It doesn't make any sense. So GAC CHER TE GYIS CHAGS DANG Both desire and rage. Yeah, desire and hatred. GAC ZHIG Sometimes? Yeah, some cases. Some. Only. Only are eliminated. Yeah, those three cases you gave me of desire realm people who don't have desire, those are free of desire temporarily. And only desire which is focused to outside. Which means there's another desire which is focused inside. Deeply connected with not understanding the pen. And the desire you talked about, sex, food, et cetera, those are outer focused and they are easy to overcome. But the inside one, where you strongly attach to believing that people come from their side, which is what allows you to come to Geshe-la to complain about your husband or wife. Drives me nuts. Then, got it? That's a different desire. Do you think, by the way, that people in the desire realm could get rid of that desire? The desire to believe that the person is not coming from me. That desire is almost impossible to overcome. You can sit in class, you can hear the pen 500 times, and then you get upset on the way out of class because someone moved your shoe. And the teacher just taught you the pen for like three hours. And so that kind of desire, the desire to believe that things are how you thought they are, that desire, you can't get rid of it in the desire realm, easily. That's the whole different level. So he says, ,GANG PHYIR BDE GYI CHAGS DANG, outside desire, ice cream, sex, stuff like that. Yeah, you can do that. You could do that. YIN GYIS. But BDAG LTAR, BDAG TU LTA BA. But those, that view, that self-existent view of yourself. Or to believe that the person around you is not coming from you. BDAG LTAR. Believe in the self-nature of that person. They are coming from their side, not me. BDAG LTAR. LHAN GYIS. It's inborn, it's innate. You were born with that. What's the proof? Babies cry. You're here. God damn it, you're here. What's the proof you were born with ignorance? You're here. People come up to me, I don't have ignorance. I say, you're here. People don't get born here if you don't have that. BDAG TSUNGS DANG YIN PAS. That kind, ,DE YIN YANG PO, TU LDOG PA LA. The only two which can LDOG PA it. The only mystical power that can end it or stop it. SAKS MED GYI GZHAN BA. Is a type of wisdom which is immaculate, unstained. Yeah, which comes from countless hours of listening to Mixed Nuts classes. And I'm not kidding. There's no other way. That's the beginning. That's just the beginning. If you never start the beginning, you can forget the rest. I don't understand anything in class. Why the hell go to a class if you understand everything? Yeah, okay. You don't keep going back to first grade after first grade. You go to second grade, because you don't understand that. And so it freaks me out. People are like, I didn't understand anything in the translation class. I said, that means it's the right class for you. Okay, all right. If you understand anything, get out. All right. I'm in the right place. Now we've discussed, we're discussing the features or the qualities of this negative consciousness, because we're trying to understand it better. Now we understand something about where it can exist. It will follow you into the desire realm. And even if you temporarily get rid of your desire, you did not get rid of your NGON YID. It's at the same level as you, basically. Now, when do you get rid of it? SBYUG RDOG means, SBYUNG RDOG means, when does it turn on and when does it turn off? SBYUG means in operation. RDOG means out of operation. SBYUNG RDOG means in and out of operation. Okay, we're going to look at what? This sixth quality of, I think it's sixth quality. Yeah, sixth quality. By my account, it's the sixth kind of quality of this negative state of mind that we are discussing. The last fifth one was, where is it located? Does it have to be in the same place where you are? By the way, your meditation rarely is. You're in the desire realm. Your meditation is supposed to be in the form realm. Because you cannot meditate if you're thinking about sex and food, actively. Subactively, it's okay. Okay, DE LTA BU'I YID DE. Okay, now we want to discuss, when does it turn on and when does it turn off? Do you ever turn it off? Is it possible to turn off? Here's Tsongkhapa's verse. We're going to skip the verse, which is too hard. And we're just going to choose somebody to read. Ooh, okay, ooh. Marina. [Speaker 2] Oh. DE LA ME DE LA KA PRE GA WE DOK DU TANG TANG TAR DU KTANG DOK PE DU MI SO. [Speaker 1] Whenever you mispronounce a word, she freaks out. It's okay, honey, they're learning. My teacher used to do that. So NAC AB means temporarily? NAC AB means occasion. On an occasion, NAC AB. REN DGA' BA That's like some, right? It means, yeah, on and off, on and off. How often is your negative state of mind in operation? Like, does it operate 24 hours a day? Does it relax for a while? Does it come back? And he says there is such a thing as DOK PA, stopping your negative state of mind on occasion. Sometimes, okay? It is possible to shut down your negative state of mind on occasion. And it's also possible to shut it down TAR DU. Ultimately, forever. Forever, okay? So we're going to discuss ways to shut it down for a while. We decided to start. And then we're going to discuss ways to shut it down forever. Okay, cool? Who's going to read? I don't know. Just bounce and write. Who wants to read? Oh, Mike Hoffman. Wait, I heard, Mike's my student. I heard his accent. I was like, is this dude from Philly or what? He is. Philly, right? [Speaker 3] Philadelphia. [Speaker 1] Yeah, exactly. South, South Philly. [Speaker 2] Yeah, nice. Okay. [Speaker 1] Dump on me. Nice. Nice. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] I don't know how you guys do that, but it's amazing. Okay. So now the first topic was, we're talking about shutdown temporarily. Yeah. And he says, at Sāgyepa. The eighth level. At the eighth bodhisattva level, okay? Which is very, very high, okay? When you see emptiness directly, you're on which bodhisattva level? One. First one. Okay. So to get to the first bodhisattva level, you have to be an artist. Now he's talking eighth. Eighth bodhisattva level. And if you have not yet achieved the fifth path. Becoming a Buddha? Or Nirvana. Yeah. If you're at Miloblam. If you're not at Miloblam. Miloblam means the place where you are finished. No more classes. Your career. Then you have to start teaching. Miloblam la ma tope du. If you're a person's eighth level bodhisattva, very high, they do go into a gokpa. A cessation. Cessation of all their negativities. But it's not permanent. Yet. Tenth level permanent, okay? Subtle. If you're curious what they still have, it's a very weird thing called NENG YEN LEN? Yeah, NENG YEN LEN. Just like they walk slightly crooked or something. Okay, I don't know. Anyway, ZHUGS PA'I TSE. Or PHA PA RNAM who are in YAMSHAD. Arya's wild there and they're meditating on emptiness. Yeah. Because when an Arya is meditating on emptiness directly, it normally lasts about... 20 minutes. 20 minutes. Because the karma is too, too, too expensive. Too expensive. And you burn it. And you might not see emptiness again for 20 years or something. It's extremely difficult to get there. And you burn the karma in 20 minutes. Then you got to start over again. You remember, but you can't do it. PHA PA in YAMSHAD, you do so. So therefore, does an Arya in the direct perception of emptiness have a negative state of mind or not? No, no state of mind. They don't have it. But does it last? No. No, and that's the second example of a temporary absence of the negative state of mind. Now, he was going to talk about permanent absence. And that would be interesting. Here we go. Who's next? Tina. Go ahead. Nice. Thank you. [Speaker 3] Nice. [Speaker 1] Nice, nice. Thank you. By the way, we're going 10 minutes over. I don't care. If you have to pee-pee, just do it there. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] Just ask her to show me there. Yeah, we got extra diapers. Thank you. Then there's a special eighth level bodhisattva called wang topa. Say wang topa. Wang topa. They're called who have achieved power. Who have achieved power. And those guys, and on up, level nine, level 10, 11, if you count that, they have a, what kind of nyonyi? They have one that's been cut? Yeah, permanently disabled. Permanently turned off. Okay. It will not come back. Okay. If it's a new Arya, his or her nyonyi will come back as soon as they come out of their emptiness perception. But if you reach eighth level and you're called power, powerful body, power, wang topa, special kind of bodhisattva, they don't have it anymore. Also, drachombas don't have it anymore. Arhats. Yeah. And they could even be nyantas and rangyas. They're listeners or self-made Buddhas. Which means non-bodhisattva arhats. Okay. You can reach nirvana without reaching bodhichitta. Okay. It is possible. You can eliminate your personal negative emotions forever without caring about other people very much. Okay. It's possible. Like physicist or somebody like that who really understands physics, without caring, even willing to test a nuclear weapon, not knowing if it would light the atmosphere on fire, which is about 50 miles east of here where they did it. They still have great insight into emptiness. Okay. They understand some things. So he says those people don't have negative state of mind anymore, but they're not Buddha yet. Okay. All right. Here we go. Okay. Yay, cat. Yay. Now we're into overtime. [Speaker 2] DE LTAR YANG TSUNG CHUG PA LAS DRAG CHUNG MED NGOS PAS MYUNG BAR GYUR NA MED JIG RTEN DE PA'I LAM NA MED DIN NOR GYUR PA NI PA'O Wow. Nice. DE LTAR Yeah. Yay. Yay. Thank you. [Speaker 1] Okay. DE LTAR YANG TSUNG CHUG PA LAS He calls TSUNG CHUG PA, which is? The Thirty by Master Vasubandhu. The Thirty Verses by Vasubandhu. Very short, definitive, classic mind-only book. Okay. And it says, DRAG CHUNG MED MIN NYID DRAG CHUNG LA MED Yeah. Arhats don't have a negative consciousness. Good. Arhats don't have it. BUG GOGS PA'I NYONGS SBYUGS don't have it. People who are in a cessation meditation. Yeah, deep meditation on cessation. They don't have it. JIG RTEN DE PA'I LAM don't have it. People who are on a path which is beyond the regular world. They don't have it. That's GYUR PA NI PA. That is both. This is nasty, nasty. I figured it out this morning, so I have to brag about it. There's three GYUR PAs in the TSUNG CHUG PA. There's three states of mind in the TSUNG CHUG PA and they're called GYUR PA, which means condition. So that's condition number two. And if you're interested, I went and got it for you. Here's DE NI GYUR PA NI PA. I did pronounce it correctly. Okay, so he goes through the three GYUR PAs. And they're here. How'd you figure it out? I figured it out by necessity because I'm teaching you and you always know everything. Okay. DE NI GYUR PA NI PA GYUR PA DE YANG RNAMS SUNGS TE There are three GYUR PAs. That's the root text. And here's the three, if you're interested. Since you're asked. You want to have somebody read it? Sure. She's like, ah. Andreana, you want to read it again? [Speaker 2] NAM PAR MI DANG NGAR SAM DANG YUL LA NAM PAR DIG PA O Good. [Speaker 1] Yeah. Again. So it's a state of mind, which is a maturation. A state of mind, which is holding on to me. And the state of mind, which is focusing on objects. Can you guess what these are divisions of? This is divisions of how the GNYON NYID? More. The second one is GNYON NYID. NGAR SAM is the second GYUR PA. NAM PAR MIN PA, is it KUN ZHI? Is it GNYON NYID? Yeah. NAM PAR MIN PA is KUN ZHI. Yeah. NGAR SAM is? GNYON NYID. GNYON NYID. YUL LA NAM PAR DIG PA? Is the regular mind. Sixth. Yeah. So this is a summary of the eight in three variations. He calls it variation one, variation two, variation three. Totally weird. Totally incomprehensible. So he says that's variation number two. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] What's variation number two? DIN NI GYUR PA NI PO. That finishes my summary of when people do not ultimately have a GNYON NYID anymore. Bigger. At all? GYUR PA is GNYON NYID itself. They have gotten rid of the GNYON NYID altogether? No, it's NGAR SAM. The second state of the mind on this school, what's called second state, is GNYON NYID. Okay. Second state is GNYON NYID. So that verse says, blah, blah, blah, blah. That finishes my presentation of GNYON NYID. Oh, really? Yeah. And now I'll go on to something else. He's quoting Vasubandhu. Vasubandhu said, telling you the location of negative consciousness and telling you when you can shut it down temporarily and permanently, concludes my discussion of negative consciousness. We're hoping that Tsongkhapa's following it. Yeah. Okay. But he might have something more difficult after this. That concludes the second state. That's all. Okay, here we go. Good job. Yeah, that's what you pay me for. All right, who's next? Who wants to read? Who's pointing at? I don't know. There's all kinds of pointing there. Whoever wants to stand up. Okay, go ahead. Follow the bouncing ball. Yeah. Thank you. [Speaker 3] KUNLE CHUNTSU YANG. [Speaker 1] CHUNTSU YANG, yeah. [Speaker 3] YI KANG SHEN, I can't do, talk to. LAM SEN PEI DAK NI TONG. Good. [Speaker 2] KUN SHI NAM PAR SHE PA LA. MI PAR TANG. Good. [Speaker 1] NYON MONG PAR SHI PO. TANG TU TA PAR TANG. TOWA? [Speaker 2] TOWA TANG. DAK LA CHA PAR TANG. NA'O NYAMS PA'I NA RGYAL TANG. MA RIG PA TSUL PA TANG PA STE. [Speaker 1] Okay. By the way, the mind only school is supposed to be called wrong. But Tsongkapa says, if you really understand it, you can master Tantra. So it's not a waste of time. There's something very beautiful about it, something very important about it. And a big thing is, if all the people who irritate you are actually inside your mind, would things change? Would you change? If I say they're not a parent, they're not coming from you, they are you. They're in you. You're looking at yourself. Then probably your practice would improve a little bit. I don't know. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] KUN LAS LTOS SU YANG. The Samuchaya also says. Yeah, who wrote that? Stanley. Abhidharma Samuchaya. We're going to study that on Saturday. That's Stanley's text, found in the Dinhong Caves in the Gobi Desert. Okay. So KUN LAS LTOS SU YANG YID GANG ZHES NA. What, what, you may ask. Oh yeah, thanks, good. Okay. You may ask, what about the negative consciousness? Yeah, now these guys, because they're mind only, by the way, we have three more minutes, hang in there. Because we're in the mind only school, they don't keep saying negative consciousness, negative consciousness, negative. They just say consciousness, which is very frustrating because we don't know which one they're talking about. Okay. Sometimes they're talking about negative consciousness. Here they're talking about negative consciousness. YID GANG ZHES NA. Yeah, what about that negative consciousness? What is that? Okay. Well, GANG, it's whatever you talk to. Whatever keeps, whatever happens in time? Whatever keeps happening? It never takes a break. It never takes a break. LOM SEMS. It's diluted. Yeah, it's crazy. It's insane. It's a part of your mind, which is insane. When you look at other people and say, I don't like them, you're not just stupid, you're insane. Okay. That'd make a good song, Ben Gibson. You're not just stupid, you're insane. Okay. Yeah, so LOM SEMS and DAG NYID. DAG NYID means here, it just means it's an entity, which is totally diluted. It is MIG PA at KUN SHING NAM PAR BSHAD PA. It focuses on the foundation consciousness? Yeah, it focuses on, I like to call it the refrigerator. It focuses on a part of your mind where all your karmic seeds are stored. So there's the part of your mind that holds all your karma seeds. And it's this negative state of mind that is looking at that state of mind. And it's always got NYON MONGS SHI PO. It's always got four afflicted friends. Yeah, and by the way, when we started the class and we were listing negative emotions related to this state of mind, you always have to flavor them as misunderstanding. So when you say pride, for example, you have to say, it's an attachment to me, pride. You see what I mean? It's not just normal pride. When you list the negative emotions involved with NYON NYID, negative state of mind, they all have to have a flavor of misunderstanding who I am. Okay, it's very interesting. Okay, so here they are. BDAG TU LTA BA Misunderstanding who I am? Yeah, I see myself as a self. Doesn't come from me. Number two, BDAG LA CHAGS PA Having some desire, negative desire for myself? Yeah, which means I believe that it's coming from its own side. You see what I mean? You can say NYON NYID has desire, but it's not normal desire. It's a desire to believe that things are coming from their side. Okay, all of them. All those four negative emotions are flavored by misunderstanding me. Here's number three, obvious. Me. NGA'O NYON PA'I NGA'O NYON A pride that just thinks, ah, me, I'm awesome. There's a form of pride called, I'm the king, okay? NGA RGYAL And again, the emphasis is on me, self, my storehouse consciousness. Got it? Okay. And then the fourth one is plain old MA RIG PA Misunderstanding, ignorance. Plain old misunderstanding. Okay, cool. Word's going to translate the next two pieces of this quotation. Sorry, one more long piece of this quotation. Okay? Okay. Here, still the quotation. All right. And this is supposed to be, I think, wrapping up the subject of negative consciousness. Where do we go after that if you're dying to know? Wow, there's a little bit here. [Speaker 2] Yeah. [Speaker 1] Those are the notes. Yeah, well, there's still a little bit. Yeah. Okay. We got some time. Yeah. But that's too short for you, so I would do that in the next one. These next two. Okay, that's what you wrote. Cool. All right. By the way, word worked really, really, really hard to get where he's at with the language. And thank you. And I think he has proven that he can teach anyone to read Tibetan. Really. And I have to say, whatever he's doing, I guess he does it with a hot iron. It's working better than what I do. So he's a great teacher of Tibetan. So if you want to learn. Thank you. What is class? What is class? It's free and it's effective. That's the main thing. Okay. So me and Geshe-la have signed some books and we're doing it as a fundraiser for the Mixed Nuts. So they're overpriced. Yeah. And the point is, so Mick and Ben can feed their children. Me as well. And please buy some. Me and Geshe-la are signing them. You sign a bunch of them. I finished. Okay. Okay, I'll sign them. I'll write your name in there. With a smiley face. Talk to Lindsey. You want to say anything, Lindsey, about it? [Speaker 2] Yeah. Yeah, just that they're really special. We have a bunch here for you all. And if you would like to purchase one, you can talk to me. I can talk to Word or Hina. Yeah. Yeah. [Speaker 1] I think it's, in my opinion, it's the best translation ever done into English at the Mainoli School. And that's the first talk. [Speaker 2] Thank you. Wee! [Speaker 1] All right. Thank you, Geshe-la. All right. Thank you. Okay. Relax. Dinner time? [Speaker 2] Hi. Hi, there. [Speaker 1] Thank you, Geshe-la, Michael. Thanks, Word. Thank you, everybody. And just a quick announcement. There's not going to be any class with Word this evening because he's going to go eat dinner. And he's been working hard. So thanks very much. And I look forward to seeing everybody again soon at the next installment of Schwinn Science Tower. Ciao.
