[Speaker 1] SANGYE CHEN YIN GYI PAD SUN NAM KYI CHO LA PHEN SHIR SANGYE DU PAR SHOK SANGYE CHEN YIN GYI PAD SUN NAM KYI CHANG CHU BAR DU DAK NI KYAB SU CHI DAK GI CHEN YIN GYI PAD SUN NAM KYI CHO LA PHEN SHIR SANGYE DU PAR SHOK SANGYE CHEN YIN GYI PAD SUN NAM KYI CHANG CHU BAR DU DAK NI KYAB SU CHI DAK GI CHEN YIN GYI PAD SUN NAM KYI CHO LA PHEN SHIR SANGYE DU PAR SHOK Welcome to the last class of Interlude on Emptiness. Oops, sorry. And we're going to do the quiz, if I can find it. There's a multitude of things open on my computer. You got the security camera, too. I don't know. The host keeps on asking me to turn on my video, and it's on. So yay. So we are at the beginning of K. Drupje's text on the Interlude on Emptiness. And we're just wrapping up this last time the reasons why we should seek to reach suchness. So someone comes and objects to K. Drupje's assertion that the emptiness in the open and secret teachings is the same. And this person presents a metaphor from the Kalachakra Tantra. We've had a lot of metaphors so far in this text, but hopefully you remember this one. If you could describe first the subject of the metaphor, how the opponent misunderstands it, and the true intent of the metaphor. And I can tell this is a really good question. I wish I remembered this. I'll give you a clue. The metaphor is something that grows and is green. A sprout? No. A flower in midair? Oh, he did talk about a flower in midair, but I don't see it. There are so many metaphors. It's bamboo. Bamboo? Oh, the hollow? It's hollow, right? So what does the opponent think that this metaphor represents? [Speaker 3] Nothing exists? [Speaker 1] More than that. So the misunderstanding is that the bamboo represents the examination of emptiness of the body and mind. It has no essence. Therefore, there is no point to attempting to reach emptiness through logical examination. Cool. And does anyone remember what the true intent of that metaphor was? That things don't have self-nature? When you do examine it, you don't come up with anything. Not that there's no point. It has to do with the formless realm. Yeah, it's a little more obscure. So the result is a formless result realm. So it doesn't represent the object that we find when we look for emptiness. So we must avoid this illogic coming to a place where we hold that the body and mind is being nothing at all. Ill. Sorry. [Speaker 2] Is that the partless atoms argument? No partless atoms? [Speaker 1] You get to answer this question, which maybe you already are. Another objection raised is that the Kalachakra says that we can see emptiness with our normal perceptions. To what emptiness is this text referring? Christina. [Speaker 2] The fact that there are no partless atoms. [Speaker 1] Right? So it's a refutation of heartless atoms in physical matter. They don't exist. And so they're not present. So the word emptiness here is used to describe that absence, but it's not referring to the emptiness, which if we see directly, we'll destroy the root of our suffering. That refutation of a thing that could exist from its own side does that. [Speaker 2] And this is not that refutation. Correct. [Speaker 1] So the interlude on emptiness is not a tantric text. So why on earth does KJJ go on and on about it for so many stanzas? Because the emptiness that you study in Tantra is not different from the emptiness that you study in Sutta. [Speaker 3] Because people are running around speaking that stupid idea. [Speaker 1] But it is the same, but it is different. It would be improper. They're running around having sex and thinking that's going to get them to enlightenment. So he's giving us a little peek that the emptiness in Tantra is the same as the emptiness in the open teachings. And so that is what you should be practicing. [Speaker 3] Is he also famous for being the tantric master? KJJ? [Speaker 1] Mm-hmm. [Speaker 3] Mm-hmm. Cool. [Speaker 1] Mikche. Mikche. It's not class three. It's class four. Sorry. See with a normal perception. [Speaker 3] Nice. [Speaker 1] The conventions? [Speaker 3] Conventional way of doing things? [Speaker 1] You're on the right track with some of that. Is this conventional? It's a nickname. Oh. So-called. We had a different word for nickname earlier, too. Mm-hmm. Called song. Just a door? A little peek. Just a little peek. Just to introduce. Thanks. That was an awesome quiz. Nice bamboo. [Speaker 2] Is that the peek into? [Speaker 1] Do you guys hear that? What was that? You don't hear it? No. Oh, shoot. Let me try it again. You have a sound effect? Yeah. Water. [Speaker 3] Ooh. [Speaker 2] Ooh. [Speaker 3] Nope. No. [Speaker 2] No. [Speaker 1] Gosh, and I spent like an hour. [Speaker 2] I was just going to say, you stayed up all night doing that, right? [Speaker 1] It's the sound of bamboo flutes, which these are about to become. [Speaker 3] Ooh. No, we don't hear that. [Speaker 1] I'm so sorry. Maybe you'll send it to us. It worked before. In previous terms. Rick says you have to click the system sound. So go to your microphone, maybe. [Speaker 2] When you share, you have to click also to share the sound. So maybe unshare. [Speaker 3] Oh. [Speaker 2] And share again. [Speaker 3] Correct. Yeah. Yeah. That's the way. [Speaker 2] Share. And then there's on the left button, a check mark. Also share computer sound. [Speaker 1] I see nothing that says share computer sound. I mean, I'm already doing the bottom left of the screen. After you click. After you click share screen. Oh, I see. Thank you. [Speaker 3] Hey. [Speaker 1] Oh, now it's asking me to install a device. What the heck? [Speaker 3] Oh, no. [Speaker 1] Okay, forget it. I'm sorry. Thank you for putting flute sounds. Yeah. Took me a while. Geshe-la, your microphone is off. Seiji, I figured out that line, but I'll give it to you later, okay? Hello? We can hear you now. We can hear you now again. Okay. Seiji, I figured out that line. I'll give it to you later, okay? [Speaker 3] Okay. Thanks, Geshe-la. [Speaker 1] It did refer... Somebody was talking about like a tantric deity. It does refer to a tantric deity, and it is spelled correctly. And it's a famous... I guess it's a famous protector of Tibet that was assigned by Padmasambhava. Something about having that protected in your chest. Okay. All right. Who is your checkers? Miss Utpala. Chundzum-la. Okay. Who's up, Chundzum? [Speaker 2] Geshe-la, we see Seiji's text, actually. [Speaker 1] Oh, really? That's great. [Speaker 2] Jigme? [Speaker 1] Stop sharing. Start sharing. How's that? Nice. Okay. Second section. I should have got it for you. It's the Benefits of Aspiring to Profound Emptiness. Okay, good. SANG MO RTOG PA NI LTUNG PA'I GSOS RAB DANG The speech of the Buddha, which teaches this profound emptiness. Excellent speech, right? Yep. Well, the highest of all words, actually. The highest of all words. And the commentaries that comment upon its true intent. GONG BRAL And he's careful to say NAM PAR BDAG PA. Okay. Correct commentaries. Okay. If you make them the foundation. Based on those. ZHI BYED DE means based on those. If you use those as the raw material, and then you BYED PA and NYAN PA this subject, then you analyze and listen to? CHEN YIN is in the Lam Rim. I don't know if you guys remember, but there's instructions on the proper etiquette for learning Buddhism. You know, like how's the student supposed to act? How's the teacher supposed to act? During the process of education, Buddhist education. So it means explaining and listening, right? CHEN YIN It means to teach and to study. To teach and to study it, okay? The SON NAM The NAM that you get from studying this subject is PHAG PA RGA. Difficult to fathom. Good. Yeah, very good. Because these books are a BYUNG KHUNG. They're a source of? Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're a source of extraordinary good karma. So, just sitting here in the mixed nuts and continuing to talk about emptiness books together is probably the most extreme karma you can collect. One of the most extreme karmas you can collect. It sounds like we're just sitting around on Zoom, right? But we are doing extraordinary karma. Much more than like saving people's lives physically or things like that, okay? All right. That doesn't mean you can't do the other one, but that's okay. Okay, now he's got a very long quotation from The Compendium of the Sutras? The Sutra Samushchaya. And it goes very long. And then it quotes the Diamond Cutter Sutra inside of that quotation. So, I went and got it for you in the dark and cold, okay? So, that's the whole thing. And it's quite long, okay? So, just remember, we're going to have the summary of the sutras. And then that's going to go... We're going to quote that summary of the sutras. And inside that summary, it's going to quote the Diamond Cutter. Okay? Here we go. Adam, can you check? Okay, so who wrote the DOG KUN LAS THOS PA? There's lots of KUN LAS THOS PA, right? By the way, there's two DOG LAS KUN LAS THOS PA. I mean, Shantideva? That's Shikshasamushchaya. That's Lapa Kuntu. 3934. Look it up. It's 3934 in the Tohoku catalog. I think it's Atisha. But there's also one by Nagarjuna, I think. Okay. So, this book says, CHOS BSAM PA LA MOD PAS If you hanker towards emptiness, if you're attracted to emptiness, then you're able to collect into yourself every good karma. And until the day you DROD PA SANGS RGYAS Until the day you reach Buddhahood. Yeah, and here, remember yesterday I was saying that when you say PAR, you're supposed to make the verb negative. Until you don't achieve Buddhahood means until the day you achieve Buddhahood. In Tibetan you have to add a negative because it means in all the days when you are still un-Buddhahooded. In English we say until you achieve Buddhahood. Okay. JI LTAR NA, JI LAS THUM All the good things in life, whether they are of the world or beyond the world, you will achieve all of them. Yay! If you study emptiness. If you dedicate a good part of your life to trying to understand emptiness. All right, here we go. Actually, that's Arya Nagarjuna. Oh, really? Wow. Okay. Emily? But there's also one... All right, okay, good. All right, go ahead. Okay. Okay. Yeah, this is a famous quotation and it's very beautiful. It's from a sutra called either granted by or blessed by the young Brahmin Jewel. I'm sorry, young what? Brahmin? Or young... Kyu... Tramse Kyu means, for example, son of a Brahmin. You could say the youth, from the Jewel Youth. Okay. We'll have to see how Jigme translated it. We translated all the names of the books in the Kangyur. We didn't quite finish, but some of them are quite difficult. Hey Manjushri, BYANG CHUB SEMS PA THAB LA BSKYED PA DANG BRAL BA'I What's that mean? If you know what to do, it's a bodhisattva? If there's a BYANG CHUB SEMS PA If there's a bodhisattva. But they THAL BA THAB KAS They don't use skillful means? Yeah, if they don't have skillful means, okay? If they are without skillful means, okay? They can CHES PA the Parchin Druk. They can analyze Yeah. The Sutras on Emptiness. Six Perfections. Oh, six, sorry. For a GAL PA RGYA or GAL PA STONG. You know, a really long time. By the way, I wonder if this isn't SPOD CHES PA CHES MA Oh, practice them? Yeah, I mean, it would make more sense. A lot more sense. We'll have to check it. Well, I have that other text that I'm working on. The other scan of this. Actually, I have it here. Here, here I have it. There you go. That's what I took out of the tengyur. It says... He spelled it wrong. Somebody spelled it wrong. Okay. Okay. It is CHES PA. Why? We had that in the Medicine Buddha over and over again, right? Yeah. Why? Or I became a Buddha. I was a bodhisattva practicing. Oh, I didn't understand what your question was. We had this expression like a hundred times in the Medicine Buddha Sutra. During the Changchug Drukla CHES PA, they did munlang. Right, they did prayers. Yeah, while they were still doing their bodhisattva activities. That was probably one of their bodhisattva activities. Yeah. But if a person listens to this presentation of the Dharma, right? CHOS KYI RNAM DANG VIPAR YOD NA Yeah. If they listen to this presentation, Meaning on Emptiness, and this is the beautiful part, with Tetsong. With doubt. Okay. They get SON NAM CHE'I MANG They get a, wow, a great big bunch of merit? Much bigger. They get much better karma. Anyone who listens to teachings on emptiness, even with, what do you call that? [Speaker 2] Skeptically? [Speaker 1] Yeah, skeptically. Even a person who listens to emptiness teachings skeptically collects more karma than another person who's kind of trying to practice the six perfections, but without a deep appreciation of emptiness. All right. Then he says, if they are Tetsong Mepa, well, Dajima. If they don't have... Skepticism. Any doubt. Yeah. Then, wow. Who could imagine how much karma those guys get? Got it? Dajima means who needs to say. What need mention. What need mention how much good karma they would have if they listened without skepticism. He's selling emptiness study heavily. I think it's a very nice approach. It makes this book very... It makes the book very smooth. Kedepje is very smooth. By the way, somebody asked if he was a tantric master. ,GANG CHEN SKYES PA'I TSUL KHYEN TZONG KHA PA, ,MOD DOR BROS PA'I DBANG PHYIR RGYAL TSUL BYAS, ,SDONG NA BSTAN PA'I BDAG BU KEDEP JE, ,RGYAL BA YOD TSUL GSUM LA CHOS PA PO, This is a famous grace to do over food. ,GANG CHEN SKYES PA'I TSUL KHYEN TZONG KHA PA, Tsongkhapa is the crowning jewel of all the masters of the Land of Snows. ,MOD DOR BROS PA'I DBANG PHYIR RGYAL TSUL BYAS, RGYAL TSUL BYAS is the absolute master of logic. ,SDONG NA BSTAN PA'I BDAG BU KEDEP JE, Kedepje is the... He owns the sutras and the tantras. ,RGYAL BA YOD TSUL GSUM LA CHOS PA PO, I offer this food to the... to the victor and his two sons. Anyway, by the way, when Adam and Van Kramer are old men, we can tackle Gyaltsabje's logic text. That's extremely difficult and very long. That's what we use for the winter debates. Okay, let's go again. ,GANG NYID KHYER DRIN NAS, ,LUNG POG PA DANG BYAS PA DANG, ,GZHAN DAG LA YANG YAG PHYIR RAB TU DONG PA RTAG CI MOD, If they listen with skepticism, they get inestimable good karma. If they listen without skepticism, you don't even have to mention it. If they cause it to be printed like Jigme and Katie and Gina, and then they LUNG POG PA. This means... POG PA means to give a LUNG. They just read it out loud to somebody else. They don't explain it. LUNG POG means to grant a LUNG. LUNG POG means to grant a LUNG. Then if they BYAS PA it... Then if they... It wasn't examining, it was listening. BYAS PA Teach it. If they teach it to others. Up above we had BYAS PA and YIN PA. Teaching and learning. This is getting deeper and deeper. Listen with skepticism. Listen without skepticism. Cause to be printed. Give it to others as an oral transmission. Then actually teach it to others. Explain it. Then YAG PHYIR DONG PA Teach it widely. Just teach emptiness books constantly. Keep talking about the pen and the two husbands constantly. [Speaker 2] LTA SPYI MA I know someone like that. [Speaker 1] What need mention the karma they collect? Please read... Let me join this one for you. Who's up? Leah. Who's up? Good. The Diamond Cutter Sutra also says BYAMS LDAN DE GYIS KHA TSAL What's that mean? The difficult speech of the conqueror? That would be DKA. Oh, the beautiful speech of the conqueror? Yeah, or the Buddha bespoke. Gave the following KHA. Gave the following KHA. Hey Rabjo, DG NYAM DU SEMS Hey Subudhi. Something is just like your mind or something. What do you think about this? What do you think about this? What do you think Subudhi? Let's say you took all the grains of sand, right? And Choney Lama says you can also read it as the drops of water. But either way. That are in the Ganges River, lung. And you took that many. Okay, so GC NYAS and DE NYAS go together in Tibetan. Imagine blah, blah, blah. Well then take that many blah, blah, blah. Okay? If you collected together, GANG DE DAG GI CHIN MA RGYUR PA If you collected together all the grains of sand in the riverbeds of the Ganges River. I'm sorry. Cancel that. This means if you had as many Ganges Rivers as there are grains of sand in our Ganges River. That's what it really means. And if you took all the grains of sand in that many Ganges River, would that be a lot? MANG BA YIN NA'AM Now guess what Subudhi is going to say? Who's up? I'm sorry. GANG DE DAG GI CHIN MA RGYUR PA MANG BA YIN NA'AM DAG GI CHIN MA RGYUR PA GANG DE DAG GI CHIN MA RGYUR PA Subudhi respectfully replied. Yeah, that would be a... Oh, Concord. That's a boatload of grains of sand. Yeah, even the grains of sand in the Ganges River would be a lot. But if you took all the grains of sand from as many Ganges Rivers as there are grains of sand and grains of sand in our Ganges River, ma gyang chi tsa, what need to mention? All right, who's checking next? [Speaker 2] Gyaltsey. [Speaker 1] Yay, Gyaltsey. Hey, katselpa. Ramjor, khyotlak ko, khyot kyi kong du chukpar jau. Kange lung tey dak kyi yey man ching yey pate nge kyi chikten kyi kham. [Speaker 2] Khe paung bup mey la lay rimpo chen nang tun kyi kong te. [Speaker 1] Deyshin shakpa la jimpa jina. Good. chung du de kyi katselpa. Then the Buddha proclaimed. Ramjor, khyotlak go wo. Ramjor, I will make you understand. I will explain to you. Khyot kyi kong du chukpar jau. You will grasp it. Kong du chuk means grasp. You will grasp it. If you took the grains of sand from that many Ganges River equal to the grains of sand of this Ganges River, and you had that many planets, jikten kyi kham. Dey ni means that many. Jikten kyi kham means planets. And if some woman or man, la la means by some man or woman. If by some woman or man, you covered, kang, those planets, that number of planets, with the seven precious substances. By the way, we can't translate this as seven precious stones because... Some of them are metals or some of them are gold. Yeah, two of them are metals. So you have to be careful how you translate rinpoche, in this case, precious things, precious substances. And then you jimpa them to the deshan shekpas. And then you give them to the conquerors. Yeah, if you present them as a gift, jimpa jinna. If you presented them as a gift. If you presented as many planets covered with the seven precious substances that were equal to the grains of sand in Ganges River is equal to the grains of sand in our Ganges River. Something tells me it's not going to be enough. Buddha's going to ask somebody a question. Who's up? Let's read two lines. Bertha. Yay, Bertha. Yay, thank you. ,'KHAS PA'AM PO MED TE ZHIG, ,THAD LA'I SON NAM MANG TU KHYAD DANG, ,RAB SBYOR GYIS SO BA, ,BYOMS LDAN DE MANG LAG SO, ,DE BAR ZHIG PA MANG LAG SO, Yeah, so would that woman or man, from, ZHIG DE LAS means from that action, okay? From that action, would they SON NAM MANG? Would they collect a lot of merit? Yeah, okay. And RAB SBYOR answers, MANG LAG SO BYOMS LDAN DE A whole lot, O conqueror. Oh, MANG LAG SO, DE BAR ZHIG PA. Yeah. SU RGYA LTAR Yeah, one gun to have bliss. Okay, yeah. That would be a lot. All right. Janice, please. Who's up? Yeah, who's checking? [Speaker 2] Janice. [Speaker 1] ,BYOMS LDAN DE, ,YI KHA TSAL PA, ,GANG ZHIG CHOS KYI RNAM RANG, ,DI LAS THA NA, ,ZIG ZHIG GZUG BYAS PA TZAM ZUNG PAS, ,GZHAN DAG LA YANG PHRAD NA, ,DE BA'I SON NAM BYAS MANG DU KHYAD DO, ,ZHES ZHUNG SO ZHES DANG First of all, let me ask you a question. Why is there two quotation marks at the end of this quotation? Because inside of the compendium of sutras, we have quoted the Diamond Cutter Sutra. Yeah, cool, cool. So it's going to be, basically it's two quotation marks in English. And we've ended both. Yeah, yay. ,BYOMS LDAN DE, ,YI KHA TSAL PA, The Buddha proclaimed, ,GANG ZHIG Any person who takes this presentation of the Dharma, ,CHOS KYI RNAM RANG, ,DI LAS And they just memorize minimum, ,THA NA, minimum, ,THA NA, a shloka, a verse of four lines, six shepa, six of chepa. If they just memorize that much, and ,GZHAN DAG LA YANG PHRAD NA, if they teach it to other people, ,DE BA'I SON NAM BYAS MANG ,DE BA'I SON NAM BYAS MANG Then they're going to get a great huge amount of merit. Yeah, this ,GZHAN mean is comparative. How much more merit? Yeah, much more. Good karma, okay. Yay. By the way, if you've got to memorize a verse, a good one is the last one. ,GANG MA RAB PA'I MA MIN NA, ,RGYUD MA SRID PAR BYED PA DANG, ,MI LA BLO DANG PHYIN DANG, ,GROD DU BYED CHEN NA, ,DE LTAR LTAR Okay, there's the quotation. Thank you. And who's up next? Lisa Lee. Yay, Lisa Lee. ,DE BZHIN GCIG PA'I TSOS KYI MTHO LAS, ,MI DGE BA CHU YI CHE GSOD NAM MOD NAS, ,DE DAG DANG LDAN PA'I DAG MED PA'I, ,CHOS LA RGYUD GCIG, ,CHOS THAMS CAD DGOS MA NAS, ,DAG PAR BSTAD PA DANG MOD PA'I, ,SEMS CAN STENG NGON SONG DU MIN GRO ZHES GSUNGS PA DANG, Good. This is a sutra called the Sutra of the Treasure of the Ones Gone Thus. Tathagata Kosha or something. Yeah, Buddhadharma Kosha. I found a text by a similar name. I couldn't find this one, but let's read it. If this is a Nagarjuna's collection from, if this is Nagarjuna's book where he, I'm sorry, we're onto a different one. Forget that. It's a new one. Yeah. And I read that sutra this morning at four o'clock. And, or two o'clock, two o'clock. And then, it's a very long description of a bad monk. There's a very, very long description, you know, about a deeply disliked monk who's a very bad person. And here it says, this is a paraphrase of that sutra's contents. And it goes on for page, after page, after page. And I was trying to find a page number you could use for a footnote. But anyway, here's, I'll choose a page, but it's hard because the whole sutra is about one bad monk. And MI DGE BA CHU CHES SHER So he's not only a bad monk, but he's the very worst? Yeah, if you take the worst of the 10 bad deeds. It talks about doing the worst of all the 10 bad deeds. MA NAS, having described those, then it describes, DE DAG DANG LDAN PA means a person who has done those deeds. A person who has done those deeds. If they enter into DAG MED PA'I CHOS, I don't know how to put that together. If they enter into, if they engage in teachings about... Okay, teachings about, that things have no nature of their own. Yeah, good, good, good. And if they have faith, DE DAG, and MED PA, MED PA often means the kind of, we're going to have it in Adam's text, why? We're going to have a big section on this in Adam's text coming up soon, why? Somebody tell me why, even Adam. Oh, the inspiration or the motivation? MED PA One of the names of the texts? No, that's MED PA. This is MED PA. [Speaker 3] Is that intent? [Speaker 1] This is same as DUN PA, DUN PA. [Speaker 2] It means aspiration, but I don't know what Adam's text is. [Speaker 1] Yeah, aspiration is a code word in the text on emptiness for what? Intellectual understanding. Yeah, intellectual understanding. So you can say MED PA or NGON GSUM. You can say MED PA or NGON GSUM. You can say he saw emptiness directly, or you can say he wants to see emptiness directly, MED PA. He's hungry, hungry for emptiness, MED PA. They have faith, DE DAG, and they have MED PA. And MED CHOS KYI SA are levels of spiritual realization where you are still hungry for emptiness, but you haven't seen it directly yet. Okay? So, even if a person just has faith and hungry for those things which have been DAG PA from the DUN MA... [Speaker 2] Pure since the primordial? [Speaker 1] Yeah, which have been... For those things which are pure from time with no beginning. DUN MA NAS means for time... What is that? What's the only thing that's been pure since time with no beginning? Actions of a self-nature. Yeah, good. Emptiness. So, if a person has misbehaved their whole life and they have managed to do the worst of the ten bad deeds, but they have faith and they feel hungry about emptiness which has been there since the beginning, they will MING DRO to the NGAN SONGS. They will not go to the lower realms. Yeah, and in Adam's text, they're going to say a very interesting sentence that logic is called LTAR GAS or LTO DGE because you use it mainly to talk emptiness without an S. To just understand it intellectually. Yeah, good, good. The word for logic in Tibetan and LTAR GAS in Sanskrit, which is VI LTAR GAS, which is just checking, the word for logic is mental estimation. You see what I mean? Because you use it to try to get a hold of emptiness. MA PA, got it? When you're hungry for it, but you haven't seen it directly yet. Now, for $50, how does that connect to NGAN SONG DU MING DRO? DANG. $50. Huh? DANG. See? Yeah, nice. Explain. When... Explain with the five pounds. Okay, so on the second path... Good. ...called JOR LAM. Good. Which has four stages. Yay. Which deal with increasingly better intellectual understanding of emptiness. Yeah, and at the third one... On the third one, which is called TZIPA, which literally means patience, but actually means mastery here. [Speaker 3] Yeah. [Speaker 1] Your understanding is so strong that it is... [Speaker 2] You have a DANG to MING DRO to the NGAN SONG. [Speaker 1] Yeah, you cannot ever go to the three lower realms. So here's a beautiful source for it. And just again, we're going to have a long section coming up in Adam's text about MA PA, hungry for emptiness, thinking about emptiness intellectually. Okay? And that's the whole purpose of Adam's text. And that's why Adam's KADU BYED text connects to Utpala's KADU BYED text. Yay. Okay. Who's checking? Gina, please. Yay, Gina. Thank you. SOS DRIN LA LOG PAR ZHUGS PA DRIN ZHIG THAR PHYI NGOS ZHES DANG Okay, cool. What need say? Yeah, good, good, good. DU LDUL BA'I LUS means the chapter on LDUL BA'I LUS Taming demons. Yeah, good, good. The chapter on taming demons. Probably your mental afflictions, yeah? Yeah, now sometimes a whole sutra is called a LUS, which means a chapter or a section, especially in the Koin Tseg. Empendium? Well, especially in a section of the Kangyur called Koin Tseg, Ratnakuta, which means pile of jewels. You get some of our more famous sutras are in a collection of sutras. So they get called chapters instead of get called sutras, but they're really sutras in a collection of sutras. So anyway, there's a couple of DU LDUL BA'I LUS and I'm still working on finding which one they're talking about. There's two of them and I'm still working on that. Okay. DGE SLONG GANG GYIS CHOS THAMS CAD GZHIN DU LDUL BA ZHES SHING NYES PA RNAMS KYIS THOB MED THA YANG RANG BZHIN GYIS MPA ZHES TE So suppose some DGE SLONG understands that CHOS THAMS CAD are extremely DUL, tamed. NYES PA RNAMS KYIS THOB MED THA YANG and the beginning edge of all problems is RANG BZHIN GYIS MPA is devoid of any nature of its own. The beginning, the source of all problems, the first source of all problems, is devoid of any nature of its own. NYES PA CHUNG BA'I RGYOD PA GSAL Well, if they understand the emptiness of the bad deeds they've done, their RGYOD PA will sell. What's RGYOD PA? Their regrets will go away. Yeah, they don't need to feel bad about bad things they've done in the past. NYES PA CHUNG means bad deeds they did in the past. They don't have to feel bad about those things. And BSTAN PO'I MI BYAS PA Those bad deeds won't be firm because they have studied how the... they have studied how the very nature of those bad deeds is emptiness, is empty. The bad deeds themselves from the very beginning were empty. Then, even if they are NON PA'I TZAM MED I don't know, pushed down, oppressed or something? Yeah, even if they are oppressed by having killed their mother or father or somebody like that. CHOG DGAG DANG TSUL KHRIMS LA SLOB PAR ZHUGS PAR DRAN GZE'I LTA CI MU Look, even if you killed your parents or killed an arhat or tried to hurt a Buddha, if you understood the emptiness involved even in those deeds, even in the very core of those deeds, then you don't have to worry about those incredibly bad deeds that will take you to hell. Much less if you DRAN GZE'I. DRAN GZE'I means just a little bit. DRAN GZE'I is an ancient word for BYUNG ZAD. Just a little bit. If you make little bubus in your CHOG DGAGS and your TSUL KHRIMS, Your rituals and your good actions. And your minor vows. If you make little mistakes in your minor vows or you make mistakes when you're doing your retreats or something like that, then, of course, you don't have to worry about it. Got it? If understanding emptiness can take away the power of a TSAM MED, then obviously you don't have to worry about small mistakes in your behavior or your practice. Yay! Keep going. Do we have any checkers? Christina, please. Cool. Nice. MA RGYAS DRA. Anybody know MA RGYAS DRA? Ajatashatru. The son of Vimbasara? Yeah. And why is he called MA RGYAS DRA? Because he's the unborn enemy? Because he killed his father? Is that why? Yeah, yeah, yeah. When he was still in the womb, some seers told his father, he's going to kill you when he grows up. And so he's called the enemy in the womb. It's his name. And he did kill his father, who I think was an Arhat by that time, or at least an Arya. His father was the one who had the Wheel of Life painted for Udrayana. So anyway... And by the way, later he changed. And here's a little story about it. By the way, he's famous for, I think, committing two or three of the five TSAM MEDs. Two. He's a record number. Okay. TSAM MED BYAS PA'I If you do one of those. Yeah, even if you've done a TSAM MED, if you LTOS this DAM PA'I PHYIR, If you've heard this pure Dharma? Yeah, and you juke it, if you practice it, and you MUD PA it, if you're always hungry for it, then the LAS you have done... Okay, listen. I don't MA that the LAS you have done is a LAS KYI SDIG PA. I don't MA that the LAS you have done is a LAS KYI SDIG PA. Is an obstacle. Yeah. Who's talking? The Buddha. Yeah, the Buddha says, Okay, I don't care if you killed your father. I don't call that a karmic obstacle. If you ask me. If you aspire towards understanding emptiness. If you practice and are hungry for it. Yeah, even if... And that MUD PA, again, it means you don't understand it directly. You just want to understand it. That's enough to clean your TSAM MED. Wow. Okay. That's pretty cool. So as far as... As far as SDIG PA BDAG PAR BYED PAR As far as SDIG PA BDAG PAR BYED PAR As far as things which can BDAG PA your SDIG PA Oh, purify your bad deeds. Yeah, yeah, yeah. SDONG PA NYID LA MUD PA Something, even emptiness, it says... Yeah, even that hunger for emptiness. Even that hunger to know about emptiness. I have never SUNG a SBYONG RJE, a purifier of bad deeds, which is RTOGS CHE BA, than that. Oh, I have never said that there's anything higher than that. For SBYONG RJE. Oh, for purifying your bad deeds. Nothing is more powerful than wanting to understand emptiness to purify those bad deeds. Cool? He's doing a heavy sale on emptiness, and then he's going to teach it, KHYAD RUB BYED. I think we're almost done with the sales job. [Speaker 3] Is it tight? [Speaker 1] It's our time. No, it's not. Because we started late. I mean, if you want to, it's totally up to you, Geshe-la, of course. I'm very happy to go. I'm happy to go for another line. Who wants to check? [Speaker 2] Sunam, please. [Speaker 1] DE YANG CHOS ZAB MO ZHES PA'I GCIG KHAS GSUNGS PA'I PHANG YON THOS PA LA YANG CHOS NYID SANG BAR DGOS TE NGES KHOR DANG RGAGS PA SOGS LA MI THA BA'I KHON LONG RGAGS PA GCIG DANG ZHES RGYUD CHOS DE'I DON LOG PAR MA GSUNGS BAR CHOS NYID ZHIS MA LOG PAR ZHES PAR GCIG DGOS TE Yeah, this is a very beautiful line. I'm glad we got to do it. CHOS ZAB MO ZHES PA'I GCIG KHAS GSUNGS PA'I PHANG YON THOS PA If you want to achieve the benefits that I have just described that belong to studying emptiness or explaining emptiness... I'm sorry. If you would like to achieve the benefits that I've just stated that were described about studying emptiness, CHOS NYID SANG BAR DGOS TE You're going to need two conditions. CHOS NYID Two conditions are going to have to be there. I'm not saying everybody who's hungry for emptiness is going to get these amazing purifications. I'm not saying that. Two things have to be there. The implication is if they're not there, you're not going to get them. You're going to go down. Yeah. Or it won't work as well as I described. So don't be disappointed if you get less than the results I described if you don't have these two conditions. Number one, you should have a kun lung dakpa. You should have a pure motivation? Yeah, where you don't dawa about getting dakpa. I don't know. [Speaker 3] I don't know how I would do. I'm not looking to get famous. [Speaker 1] Yeah, your goal is not getting famous. NYAD GOR means praise and money from other people because you're a great emptiness master. Look, if you don't have a pure motivation, rather, if you are looking to get famous or people give you stuff, then cancel what I said about getting rid of your five tsam me. That's the first condition. Now what's the second condition? ZHES RGYUD CHOS The dharma that is explained. This RGYUD means future tense, future participalizer. Dharma which is explained shouldn't be CHIN CHI LO. Wrong. Yeah, it shouldn't be explained wrongly and shouldn't be taken wrongly. The teaching that is done about the emptiness cannot be mistaken about the meaning also. Because if it is, you won't get these results. I'm not saying you can purify the worst bad deeds with an emptiness understanding if you got a bad teaching on it. He says CHIN CHI MA LOG. [Speaker 2] Isn't he saying that it shouldn't be backwards? [Speaker 1] Yeah, the second half says CHIN CHI MA LOG PA SHES PA GCIG DGOS You need a good explanation which is not mistaken. Okay? Okay, got it. Which doesn't explain it in a mistaken way. LOG PA MA GSUNG You need a good explanation which doesn't teach it the wrong way. You're right. I took them both as negative. Both as mistaken. Thank you Geshe-la. Yay! Stopped here. What's the date? It's the 5th? 10-5, yeah. Okay. Thank you, Geshe-la. [Speaker 2] Thank you, Geshe-la. [Speaker 1] You're welcome. See you, Geshe-la. [Speaker 2] Thank you, thank you, thank you. [Speaker 1] Thank you, Geshe-la. Thank you, Geshe-la. Wait, Ken, you're teaching yoga. Are you ready? Oh my God, I forgot.
