All right, here we go. We reached a cool point, and they're going to say here, DE'ER TSE LAS YONGS RDZIN GYI CHAGS SU LTAR I told you the wrong place. Yeah, no, you're right.

Yeah, you're at the right place. DE'ER TSE LAS YONGS RDZIN GYI CHAGS SU LTAR So he says, I'm going to follow the teaching of YONGS RDZIN. TSE LING.

Okay, you're okay, Tim. 315A, page 315A. There we go.

Yep. He said, let's follow TSE CHOG. YONGS RDZIN GYI BZHI RGYAL TSUN YONGS RDZIN means, it's an ancient word from Tim's book for a teacher, which means the holder, the person who keeps you in their hands.

It's called YONGS RDZIN. Nowadays, it's only used for teachers of high lamas, for the highest lamas. It's called YONGS RDZIN.

So this YONGS RDZIN was the teacher of the eighth high lama. Okay, understand? Okay.

His name was TSE CHOG MIN. He's famous. Oh, here's a picture of him.

He's famous for writing a two-volume set, a huge book. It's like 2,000 pages of the biographies of the lamrim teachers from the beginning. So we're studying the biography of Dharmakirti and Dignaga.

Those come from him. It's hard to get nice biographies of ancient lamas because they were 2,000 years ago. It's like trying to get a biography of Jesus or something, of his lost years or something, but he researched them.

He lived, I don't know, 1,500, so it's a very cool book, and we input it, I don't know, five years ago. We found it and we input it. Here he's quoted, and he says, I think you should study the dream, cream dream, bodhichitta first, and then he said the proper place to study ultimate bodhichitta would be where?

In the lamrim structure. Yeah, when you get to the sixth perfection. When you get to see, when you get to the discussion of the perfection of wisdom, which is the sixth perfection, since it's all about seeing emptiness directly, well, then that's where you should teach the ultimate bodhichitta, because it is seeing emptiness directly.

Then our author, Pabongka Rinpoche, our speaker says, I'm going to do it that way. So we can expect his discussion of ultimate bodhichitta like in two years or something. And we actually did it already.

We did it 11 years ago. We covered it already. But we're going to do it again, so don't worry.

All right. LO SBYONG BA MNGON DU MI BYAS PA ZHES RIGS KYI BAR TU CHEN PO When you cover the perfection of wisdom, DON DAM SEMS SKYES DAM DRAG. DAM DRAG means you should cover it there.

You should bring it in there, the ultimate bodhichitta. DRAG DE'I OG RE'I CHES SUM Which means he's going to move on now to Cream Dream Bodhichitta, which is the wish to achieve enlightenment for all beings. Just a normal wish of planet jumping.

Planet jumping wish. And he says something cool here. He says, if we're going to cover regular bodhichitta, then why don't we cover how Buddha got bodhichitta?

How did Lord Buddha, Gautama, Shakyamuni, how did he get bodhichitta? And there's two stories. So today is story time.

And I'm going to tell you two stories. Grandpa's going to tell you two stories about how the Buddha himself, the day he got bodhichitta. And there's two separate events.

And I went and got it for you because we have John Brady's database and it's in there. They finished all the books from India, 4,600 books from India. They finished inputting them around 1999.

It took about 20 years. And it's done. So we just say, tell me the story and it goes there.

It takes less than one second to find it. And that's a program that we invented. And it still works after 35 years, and it takes one second to find the story.

So it's programmed in a special way. The database is programmed in a very unusual way, and we never had to update it, which is very unusual in the computer world. Anyway, then something else happened.

The first story is also found, is found in two different sutras. And it's the same story. We were translating one of those sutras.

It's called All the Kinds of Karma. And we translated it. We worked on it for five years in the Mixed Nuts classes.

We finished it. And the story is in there. Some of you heard the story at that time about the shipwreck story.

And we translated that whole sutra. And there's a pyramid, an ancient pyramid in Bali, in Indonesia. Sorry, Sumatra.

Anyway, there's an ancient pyramid in the jungle. And the Dutch found it after they took over the country, which they subsequently lost. Okay, that seems to happen.

But they found a pyramid, and they uncovered it. They took the jungle off of it. And I think it has 1,500 stone carvings the size of this wall.

Okay, and it has a special oba. Oba means drain pipe system. So the rains in the jungle never come down the side of the murals, the stone carvings.

So they have special holes through the blocks of stone, and the rainfall goes through the blocks of stone and pours out the bottom. So you can still see the panels after 1,000 years. They look very cool.

So we went there, and me and Dr. Woo went there, and we had a teaching there. And we studied all the panels and we've translated many of those stories. Then Dr. Woo went back with some of his people, and they found out there's a layer of panels that were buried because the pyramid was falling down. So maybe 800 years ago, the pyramid was falling down. So they they shored up the bottom row, and they covered them. They covered the whole bottom row of blocks to keep the whole thing from collapsing.

And it worked. But people didn't know the blocks were there. Finally some guy, some famous photographer guy found one, and then he realized that there was a hole, that the whole first row of blocks was buried.

They dug them out, and they reinforced the whole thing with concrete. That row is the story of Lord Buddha getting bodhichitta. For the first time.

We had our Guadalajara team, Gina Rivera. She took each panel and she drew each one out. It took a year.

And we gave her 300 panels to draw. Because the panels are gray basalt, and you can't take a photo of them. It doesn't come out.

It's always really hard to see. So she made line drawings of them. And I'm happy to say, here's one of them.

Okay, and this is an actual carving. She took the carving and she's made drawings. She and her team have made, I think, 300 drawings.

And so the drawings are done, and we're putting the drawings in the sutra. And the sutra tells the story I'm about to tell you. Now, why there's a boat?

And that's a thousand years ago. So it tells us what boats looked like. That's the boat that Atisha would have taken from India to Indonesia to study bodhichitta.

So here we go. And I'm going to take the whole story out from a sutra. And here we go.

I'm going to start at GANG PO LA. It says start here. Look for start here.

Just search for start here. So we're going on a detour, which is why it took 11 years to... Or Tim, you could look for GANG PO LA, G-A-N-G-P-O-L-A.

G-A-N-G, space, PO, LA. Okay, good. Here we go.

Okay, here we go. We're going to read the sutra, all right? This is a long detour.

It might take a few classes. I'm sorry, but it's fun. And I'll find the rest of the drawings for you this morning, okay?

Between classes, in my free time. It's the only free time I have. Okay, GANG PO LA SOGS PA'I RTOG PA RGYUD PA RGYAL PA Yeah, RTOG PA RGYUD PA means the life stories of the saints, okay?

Avadhana. And this one's called Purna. BAM PO DGOS PA means ninth book.

RDZA BA'I BU MO And this is mentioned by the Arhlam Rim. The Arhlam Rim says at this point you guys should go to the story of RDZA BA'I BU MO, okay? So RDZA BA'I BU MO means friendly one.

And the Sanskrit is Maitreya. Maitreya, okay? And BU MO means daughter, a friendly one.

So this is a woman named Maitreya Kanyaka, okay? Maitreya Kanyaka. And this story of how Lord Buddha first got, what kind of bodhichitta is it?

Crane Dream Bodhichitta. Is the story of Maitreya Kanyaka, okay? Maitreya.

You can call him Maitreya for short. We translated this story in the Mixed Nuts, and it's part of that sutra. And that whole book will be coming out shortly, okay?

In an e-book. And it's a whole sutra about karmas. It's a book of karmas, and it's unbelievable.

It's every possible karma you can imagine. You know, if you do this, you're going to get that. It's a book of karmic correlations, okay?

And it was sponsored by two Austrians who I met about eight years ago. And they said, Geshe-la, do you have a master book of karmic correlations? Do this, get this.

Do this, get this. Because some of them are not obvious. And I said, yeah, there's two great books.

One is the story of the peacocks, the crown of knives. And the other is this sutra called All the Kinds of Karma. And I said, if you sponsor it, I'll train a translator to translate it.

And they said, we'll sponsor it. So they've been sponsoring Seiji for six years now. He's doing the crown of knives, and he's almost finished.

And we did finish this sutra. So yay! Yay for the Austrians, okay?

Right? Renata and Norbert, yeah. And don't forget you guys, it's almost time for his annual injection.

All right. That's my job. I hate that job.

Okay, Seiji Awani. SANGS RGYAS BYAMS NAS DE LA RGYAL PO RNAMS DANG So the kings of the land had come to listen to Lord Buddha give a teaching. I will slow down.

Just after I die. No. RNAMS PO BYAMS PO RNAMS DANG, and the great ministers of the king were there to listen.

CHUG PO RNAMS, the rich people also came. PO RANG KHOR GYI MI RNAMS DANG, and all the retainers in the palace, all the palace guys, helpers in the palace came. SONG PO RNAMS, all the merchants in town came.

To listen. DE SPON RNAMS, all the ship captains who went for riches overseas. LHA RNAMS, the Devas also came to the teaching and dropped by.

The Lus dropped by. LUD GRUB Come on, Tim, LUD GRUB. No, Naga.

The Nagas came, the dragon. Real dragons came. NOD CAN, the spirit beings dropped by.

This is getting to sound like Lord of the Rings, right? SLA MA YIN, the demigods dropped by. RNAMS KA DING, KA DING, the Garudas dropped by.

Okay, KA DING? MI YAM CI, MI YAM CI is a funny name for ghosts, and it's like people or what the heck? They're called what the heck beings.

It means you look at them, they have like an owl head and a snake's body or something, and it's like, what the heck? So they are called what the hecks. All right, MI YAM CI.

Say MI YAM CI. Okay, RTOG BYED CHEN PO, RTOG BYED CHEN PO means big bellies, which is a synonym for hungry ghosts. Good.

I'm glad I didn't offer any money, Daniel. KHOR DI BYED, they came to Lord Buddha, they showed their respect. LAMA BYED, LAMA here means respect.

They showed respect. RIM BAR BYED means they showed their honor. It's all synonyms.

SPYOD PA, they made SPYOD PA. Like Lama SPYOD PA? They made honors.

BYED PA'I, SVA DANG, these devas, these lus, these lus, naga, these nogens, these Gandharvas, spirits, or who are also heavenly musicians. TSA MA YIN, the demigods, NAM KHA'O DINGS, the Garudas, MI YAM CI, those what-you-call-them's, and the RTOG BYED CHEN PO RNAMS, then they all made offerings to Lord Buddha. CHING ZHES PA'I SANGS RGYAS CHEN PO DANG DE, SON NAMS CHEN PO DANG LDAN MA, NA SOGS PAR GZHEL ZAD, they offered Lord Buddha robes, which is the only thing that most monks want, new robes.

GZHEL ZAD, they brought nice fruits, plates of fruits, toast. SIM CHA, pajamas? DEN, new mattress, which is a typical offering for a monk in ancient times.

NYAN TSOS, I don't know what that is. MAN SONG, they brought medicines. NYAN THOS KYI RGYEN DON DANG, BYED PA, NYAN DU YOD PA NA, they were there to learn, probably near Shravasti, yeah, in Shravasti, which is a famous city where the diamond cutter was taught.

That city was found, I've been there, it was found and excavated, it was many feet underground, and they found it based on the travel log of the Chinese master, Shen Tsang, who walked through India for 17 years and counted his steps. So he said, if you want to get to Shravasti from Kathmandu, it's like 300,000, 470,000, and they found Shravasti underground from his description. I sat with the Buddha and taught the diamond cutter.

It's very cool. Okay, so anyway, he's there, Gyalpo Gyalche Kitsel, in the Jetavan, in the garden of Prince Jeta, which was donated by a famous prince. Paid for by Anathapindada, which is the guy who enjoys giving food to homeless people.

So this is an interesting thing that the diamond cutter was taught because a business person and a politician got involved. Okay, and that's a beautiful story. Not because of the monks.

TSE KHYIM BDAG DGON MED ZAD CING GYI DGE SLUNG BA'I KUN DGOS RO BA NA In the gardens that were donated by Anathapindada. How did he buy it? Yeah, he said, I'd like to buy this garden as a teaching place for Lord Buddha.

And the owner of the place said, okay, cover it with diamonds until I can't see the grass anymore, and that's enough, and that's the payment for this acreage. And he did it. Kind of nice.

BYAMS NAS DE'I KHYAD DGE SLUNG RNAMS LA RGA TZAL PA And then the Buddha said to the monks sitting in, all these beings sitting in that garden. He taught it in a garden. DGE SLUNG BDAG All monks and other people here.

KHYIM GANG BDAG NA BHAG MA NYID LA LAS PA RIG MO BYAS PA DANG If there's any household hold anywhere where the children honor their father and mother, LAS PA RIG MO BYAS PA, who give them TV sets and other necessities, not real, okay, who give them gifts, LAS PA RIG MO BYAS PA, who serve their parents, DE DAG NI TZAM PA DANG LDAN PA'I YIN NO then that household is blessed, okay? Those households where children honor their parents, take care of their parents. Like China, not like America.

I mean like China 20 years ago. DE'I PHYI PHYIR GZHAN NA, why is that? DGE SLUNG BDAG RIG GI BU'I BHA MA NYID NI RIG GI BSGOM NAS TZAM PA DANG LDAG BA'I PHYIR RO Your parents are similar to the gods themselves, okay?

They are as important as the gods themselves. RIG GI BU'I BHA MA NYID NI RIG GI BSGOM NAS TZAM PA DANG LDAG BYUR DGE SLUNG BDAG KHYIM KHA DAG BHA MA NYID LA LAS PA RIG MO BYAS PA DANG Any household where the kids respect the parents, DANG LAS PA BYO PAR BYED PA and make them offerings. LAS PA BYO PAR BYED PA, who serve them into their old age.

DE DAG NI BLO PA DANG LDAN PA YIN NO They will find teachers. Those people who care for their parents will find spiritual teachers, okay? DE'I PHYI PHYIR GZHAN NA, why is that?

RIG GI BU'I BHA MA NYID NI RIG PA'I BSGOM NAS BLO PA DANG LDAG BA'I PHYIR RO Because in a way, it's just... What do you call that? Sympathetic magic?

There's a resonance. There's a resonance in reality. Those who take care of their parents find spiritual teachers.

That's a cosmic resonance between taking care of your parents and finding your spiritual teacher. BLO PA DANG LDAG BYUR, DGE SLUNG BDAG KHYIM KHA DAG BHA MA NYID LA LAS PA RIG MO BYAS PA DANG Any household in which the children take care of their parents, LAS PA BYAS PA BYAS PA, who make offerings to their parents, LAS PA YOG PA'I BYAS PA, who serve their parents, KHYIM DE DAG NI KUN DU BYIN PA'I OSO'I RGYUR PA DANG LDAN PA YIN NO Those households are worthy of our respect. DE'I PHYI PHYIR GZHAN NA, why is that?

DGE SLUNG BDAG RIGS KYI PHU'I BHA MA NYID NI RIGS PA'I DGONG NAS KUN DU BYIN PA'I OSO'I RGYUR PA YIN PA'I PHYIR RLOG As far as their status, karmically, your parents are on the same level as your teachers. What you do to your parents and what you do to the Buddha are similar karmas. DGONG NAS KUN DU BYIN PA'I OSO'I RGYUR PA YIN PA'I PHYIR DGE SLUNG BDAG KHYIM GANG DAG NA PA MA NYID NA LAS PAR YIN PO'I PHYIR PA LAS PAR PHYIR PA Any household where the kids take care of their parents, MED DANG LDAN PA YIN NO, have a family fire, family heart, they have a warmth in the home.

That home has gas heaters. It means it has, that home has warmth. That's a home and not a house.

Where people are taking care of their parents, that's a home. That's a real home. MED DANG LDAN PA YIN NO, DE PHYIR ZIN NO, DGE SLUNG BDAG RIGS KYIS BU'I PHANG MA NYID NA RIGS PA'I SGO NA'I MED DANG BDAG BA'I PHYIR RO Because your parents are like the, are like the fire in, your parents are what makes the difference between a house and a home.

Cat's taking good care of her mom. Still, amazing. DGE SLUNG BDAG RIGS KYIS BU'I PHANG MA NYID NA RIGS PA'I SGO NA'I MED DANG LDAN PA YIN NO, If in a certain home people are taking care of their parents, they have contact with Tantric Deities.

That's cool. If the kids are taking care of their parents, they have contact with Tantric Deities. LDAN PA YIN NO.

ZHI PHYIR ZIN NO. DGE SLUNG BDAG RIGS KYIS BU'I PHANG MA NYID NA, RIGS PA'I SGO NA'I MED DANG BDAG BA'I PHYIR because karmically, your parents are equal to tantric deities. Good job, Kat.

Khandi, lack of joy. CHEN PO'I DE SKYES, DE SKYES PHYI'I KHATSAL TE DE BA SHES PA DE SKYES BYAS GSUNGS NAS When the Buddha had made those pronouncements, GZHAN YANG LTOS PA'I DI SKYES LA'I PHYI'I KHATSAL He went on and he said, I guess he made a poem out of what he had said, all right? You can hear it, okay?

PHA MA NYID NYID TSAG PA DE DE GZHIN THAG PA'I BLO PO NYID PHU YID KUN CING DGOS RGYUR PA MI YANG YIN PA LHA YANG YIN DE PHYIR DE NYID CHAGS KYIS NAS BRAL BA DANG NI MTHUN NAM DANG KHAMS PA BDAG YANG MTHU BA DANG YANG NA SRED DANG BSKOM RNAMS DANG KHOS DANG SMREL CHAR BSTAN RNAMS KYIS KHYAD PAR BDAG GIS KUR DI BYA PHA MA DANG LA GUS BYAS NAS DE NA BSKYED PAR DE DAG NI DE YANG MED PA MED GYUR LA ZHI NA'ANG THOR BA'I RGA BAR GYUR Anyway, it's a long poem that says the same thing, okay?

You're going to have a good life if you pay respect to your parents and take care of them. GANG GI TSE CHEN PO'I DE'I SKYES RDOG GYI GANG TSAL PA DE'I TSE And when the Buddha had finished this pronouncement, DGE SLONG DA'ANG THETSAMS BSKYED DE THETSAMS THAMS CAD SPYOD PA NA SANGS RGYAS CHEN PO'I DE LA ZHUGS PA Then Buddha said, any questions? Let's do Q&A, okay?

Anybody have any doubts about what I said? THETSAMS CAD DE THETSAMS CAD SPYOD PA And I will SPYOD PA, DOR GYI SPYOD PA I will cut, I will cut your doubts, okay? Same as BADGYUR CHED DGRA.

Same as diamond cutter. SANGS RGYAS CHEN PO'I CHEN PO'I CHEN PO'I DE PHA MA LA ZHI ZHUGS ZHI ZHUGS CHE BA'I SNGAGS PA GSUM NI NGO TSA'I LAG SO Somebody said, wow, that's amazing. We never heard this teaching, that the parents are like a tantric deity or something.

NGO TSA'I, that's like amazing. CHEN PO'I DE'I GYIS DKA' TSAL PA DGE SLONG DA DE LTAR DE BZHIN ZHES PA DU BYA DANG BRAL BA ZHES RANG DANG BRAL BA SDI MA DANG BRAL BA RGYAL BA NA RGA BA NA LA BA NA CI BA DANG NYA NGAN DANG MED NA BDUN PA DANG So who is the Buddha? Who is the Buddha?

Who's talking? Lord Buddha. Who is the Buddha?

DGE SLONG DA DE LTAR DE BZHIN ZHES PA The person who has no more desire. DU BYA DANG BRAL BA ZHES RANG DANG BRAL BA The person who has no more anger. PHAN NUS ME'O BU ZHU ME'O PHAN NUS SDI MA DANG BRAL BA No more ignorance.

RGYAL BA DANG RGA BA DANG NA BA DANG CI BA DANG No more birth. No more getting old. No more sickness.

No more death. NYA NGAN DANG MED NA BDUN PA DANG By the way, those are the words taken from Sugeng Sutra, the Twelve Links. He's taking the wording from the Twelve Links.

Who no longer have any reason to be sad. BDUN PA DANG SDUG BSNGAL BA DANG YID MI BDE BA They have overcome physical suffering. They have overcome mental suffering.

THUGS PA RNAMS LA YONGS SU SBYU BA They no longer have screw-ups in their life. THAR BYED KHYEN PA They are Mr. Know-it-all. It is possible.

RNAMS LA THAR BYED KHYEN PA They actually know everything in the universe. YES SHES DANG ZHES BYED THAR BYED DANG SNGA GNYAS ZIN PA They already mastered every single entity in the universe. PHA MA LA SRID SU CHE BA SNGAGS PA SPYOD PA DI LTA BU LA NGO TSAR CHE BA CI YOD The fact that the guy who knows everything in the universe is telling you that it's good to honor your parents.

Why do you think it's so amazing? Why do you think that? Buddha is saying that.

DE BAS DU NA NGAG DOD CHAGS DANG BYAS PA Long ago, before I became a Buddha, I was DOD CHAGS. I had DOD CHAGS. I had desire.

ZHES DANG I had anger. STI MU I had ignorance. SKYE BA I was stuck in the wheel of life.

RGA BA I was a victim of aging process. SNGA BA I also used to get sick. CHE BA I used to die also from time to time.

SNGA NGAN And I also had problems. MANG NGAG And I used to whine about it also. I'm the super whiner.

SDUG BSNGAL BA I was subject to pain. YID MI BDE BA I was subject to sadness. GRUB PA RNAMS LA I had screw ups in my own life.

YONGS SU MA GRUB I was super not liberated. MA LA NUS PA CHUNG NGOS BYAS PA'I KYANG SDUG SMYAL CHEN PO NYONG BAR GYUR LA And one day I made a mistake. In those days.

And I hurt my mom. A little bit. A little tiny bit I hurt my mom.

And I experienced extreme suffering from that. KUR DI CHUNG NGOS BYAS PA'I KYANG BDE BA CHEN PO NYONG BAR GYUR LA But I also paid my mother some respect. And from that, I got a lot of bliss.

CHEN PO NYONG BAR GYUR LA BDE PA RAB PAR NYONG BAR You want to hear the story? And they say, yeah. And he says, YI LA SONG ZHIG which means, I'll teach it to you if you promise not to forget it before tomorrow.

Okay. And by the way, every commentator will say three cups. The three cup promise.

I promise not to... I promise not to be like an upside down cup. I promise to be open-minded to this teaching.

I promise to be... not to mix the tea and the coffee. I promise not to mess it up by mixing it up with new age stuff that I learned in my last yoga class.

And I promise not to crack. Yeah, I promise not to leak. It means I promise not to forget what you said by 12 o'clock today.

Okay, DGE SLONG BDAG Now he's going to tell a story. This is how sutras get started. He says, DGE SLONG BDAG Let me tell you a story.

DNGOS BYUNG BA DE PA'I DUS NA Long ago, there was a city called Varanasi. Okay, Varanasi. What's the ancient name of Varanasi?

What's the ancient name of Varanasi? Kashi. And if you go there, I used to live there.

I remember I was in a tiny little temple one morning. And I was sitting next to a businessman, and he said, Sir, I'll tell you something. I'm like, what?

He says, Varanasi, we are very old, sir. We are 5,000 years old. I'm like, yeah, I heard that.

He says, and when you cross the city line into our city, you are in another universe. I'm like, I believe it. It's called Kashi, sir.

The ancient name is Kashi. We have an input center there. We do our Sanskrit input there for 20 years.

Anyway, so Varanasi is old, and the Buddha lived there before he became the Buddha. He also got enlightened just out of town. You were there, right?

Sarnath. DE PON TZA BA There was a ship captain whose name was Maitra, which means friendly one here. It means loving one.

Maitra. TZA BA ZHES BYA BA CHUG CING NOR MANG LA He was extremely wealthy. LONG SPYOD CHE BA He had lots of cool stuff.

YONGS SU BRDZIN PA He was very possessive of his stuff. YANG BZHIN RGYAS CHE BA But he also had a huge life, huge presence. RNAMS THUGS KYI NOR DANG LDAN PA His wealth competed with that of Vaisravana, the god of wealth.

It's hard to say who had more money. LDAN PA RNAMS THUGS KYI BU'I NOR DANG LDAN PA ZHIG GNAD PA DE RIG SNYAMS PA NAS CHUNG MA LANG NAS He was afraid that his family line would stop, so he got himself a CHUNG MA, which means a wife. He got a wife, took a wife.

DE DANG LHAN GCIG DUD TSE ZHING RGA LA He had a good time with her, which is the ancient word for they had sexual relations. It's always they had a good time, and it means they made babies. Got it?

RGA GUR CES DU DE TSE ZHING RGA LA DGOS BYAS PA STE LAS BU DAG CHUNG YANG And they had some sons from their having good time. They had sons. CHUNG YANG And in India, a son is everything.

For an Indian, a son is... We have an input operator. He had nine daughters in a row.

He kept going, and he finally had a son. Then he stopped. So there's still this ignorance there.

BU DAG CHUNG YANG ZHI BA RGYUR ZHI BA, those boys, those male children died. They kept dying. Okay, ZHI BA.

DE LAG PA LA KOM TSUL KHYEN NAS BDAG GIS KHYER MA DANG LDAN PA ZING KHYANG I don't know what KOM TSUL means, but I think it means someone told his future, from his palm. Yeah, read the lines, right? BDAG GIS KHYER MA DANG LDAN PA ZING KHYANG So I have lots of money.

BDAG LA BU'ANG MED But I don't have a son. BU MO'ANG MED I also don't have any girls. So BDAG DE PA'I OG TU After I die, BU MED PA'I PHYIR since I don't have any children, RDOG PA THAMS CAD RGYAL PO DBANG BAR GYUR RO The government will take all my stuff after I die, which happens in Arizona also.

DBANG BAR GYUR RO NYAMS TE SEMS KHONG DU SPYOD CING SDUG BSNGAL He sat and tried to think this thing out. DE NAS DE LA GANG CI GYI DANG LA BSTAN PA Then somebody gave him some good advice. This is a long story.

You okay with that? Okay. I mean, it's like story time.

This might take a couple of sessions, Tim. It's probably going to mess up our whole schedule. Some people said, we got some advice for you.

What? GAL TE SKYOD KYI BU CHUNG BAR GYUR NA If you happen to have a boy again, DE LA BU MO MING TOG Give him a BU MO's name. Give him a daughter's name.

If you have another son, give him a girl's name. MING TOG ZHING DE LTAR BYAS NA And by the way, this is typical. When I was in Mongolia, if you've had some miscarriages and you have a child, you put it in a big pot and you keep it covered for three days.

And you go around the house all grumpy. I mean, you feed it secretly, right? And then everyone in the family talks like the baby died.

And they say, oh, it's so sad the baby died. And then supposedly the evil spirits will get tricked. Oh, the baby died, stillborn.

Actually, the baby's alive in your biggest pot and you feed it secretly at night. So this is the same idea. If you have a son and you give it a girl's name, the demons who cause illness will be misled because a son can carry on your lineage.

So let's do it that way. I suggest you do that. DE'I PHUS MED DE PHUS GDUG PA'I PHYIR GUS LANG PHYIR LA DANG, GUS PAR DANG RGYAL CHEN PO'I TZAM PA LA SOGS PA NI LHA'I KHYAD PAR GZHAN DANG LA'ANG TSUL BA RTAG TE He made prayers to all the Hindu gods.

DI LTAR DE KUNG RGA RA BA'I LA DANG LAG ZAL GYI LA DANG, LANG GI ZHIN DOR LA DANG ZUN DOR LA DANG, DOR MA LEN PA'I LA DANG, LHAN CIG KHYAD PA'I LA DANG, PHYIR STON PA BA DANG RTAG PA PHYIR ZHIN DOR BA'I LA DANG LANG TSUL BA RTAG So he made many prayers to all the kinds of gods that were hanging around everywhere. BDE PA LA GCIG RTEN NANG TSUL BA RTAG PA'I RGYUS BU MA SKYE BA'I RGYUR RO ZHIG BYA BA DANG DE YOD MOD KYIS And he started, it looked like he was going to have a child. DE'ANG DE LTAR NI MA YIN TE, GAL TE TSUL BA RTAG PA'I RGYUS BU DANG BU MA SKYE BA'I RGYUR DU ZIN LA KHOR DU SKYE BA'I RGYAL BO BZHIN DU RE NUS LA'ANG BU STONG STONG YOD PAR GYUR BA'I RIGS SO If you're able to pull this off, your kids are going to have thousands of kids each and you're going to have a long, this is like an Indian dream.

Your family line will continue for thousands of years. YOD PAR GYUR SO, MI NI NAS GSUNGS SOGS PA LA BUR DO BUNG BA'I RGYUR BA'I RGYUR MA GSUM GANG BZHIN NA THAMS MA NYID DU BYA LA'ANG PHRAD You want to, this is a long story. They go into a description of how a spirit gets caught in the womb from the bardo.

And that's accepted in the Abhidharma. This description was taken and put in the Abhidharma. You want to hear it, I guess?

Okay. I think so. I hate to take anything out of a sutra.

Okay, there must be a reason why it's there. THAMS MA NYID DU BYA LA'ANG PHRAD PA DANG If the parents have sexual desire for each other, MA DUS LA BAB CING RTAG CING DANG LDAN PA If the mother is menstruating, CI SA'ONG PA STE then a spirit will come, there's a spirit in the bardo, in the vicinity. NAS DE GSUMS SOGS PA LA If these three conditions convene, the desire of the mother, the menstruation, and the proximity of a spirit, of a bardo being, TSOR LAS BU DANG PHUNG PA SKYE BA RGYUR then you'll have a kid.

Then a kid will enter the womb. DE NAS DE'ANG GSUNG BA'ANG BRTAG PA THUR PHRAD DUG LA SEMS CAN ZHIG KYANG SEMS CAN GYIS RI ZHIG NAS ZHIG PA NAS CHUNG MA'I DOR ZHUGS SO And in fact, there was a spirit traveling through the bardo and it did come close to him and his wife while they were having sex. His wife was having menstruation and the spirit entered her womb.

There's an interesting thing that bardo spirits have the karma to be able to walk through walls. But when they hit the skin at the back of the womb, they karmically cannot pass through it and they get blocked. And they get stuck and then the woman gets pregnant.

That's the traditional Abhidharma explanation. They have karma for a few square inches to be unpassable. PHUNG MA'I SKYE PA'I RANG BZHIN CHUNG MA'I DOR ZHUGS SO PHUNG MA SKYE PA'I RANG BZHIN CHEN GANG CI LA NI THUNG MA MA YIN PA'I CHUNG LA YOD DE SNGA GZHAN GYIS SKYE PA NA CHAGS PA NA ZHES LA MA CHAGS PA NA ZHES PA DANG GDUG KYANG ZHES NA BRTAG TZAM DU ZHIN PA LA BU CHAGS PA'ANG ZHES PA DANG If you know these signs, you can actually read a woman's womb and from the position of the baby, you can, without x-rays, tell if it's going to be a boy or a girl.

GAL TE GYUR YIN NA RTOG YIN LOGS SU BSTAN CING NAS SO If the child's going to be a boy, it will tend to face the right side of the womb. I don't know if that's true. GAL TE PHUNG MA YIN NA RTOG YIN NA RTOG YIN LOGS SU BSTAN NAS SO If it's going to be a girl, they will tend to face to the left side of the mother's body.

DE'I RGA' BYAS NAS KHYIM THUB LA MED PA So after all this description of how to get pregnant, he was really happy. SBYOR BA DANG LA ZAD CHAGS TE And then they tried it out and his wife said, SBYOR BA, what's SBYOR BA? SBYOR BA'I ADI SHAR, the Lord.

But it's an aristocratic name for your husband? Oh, Lord. She called her husband.

Oh, Lord, I got a child. ZAD CHAGS. I got a child.

I'm with child. ZAD CHAGS TE BDAG GIS RUNG YAS LOGS SU BSTAN CING MED PA LAS NA GYUR GYUR BA He's facing the right, the baby's facing the right side of my body, so I think it's a boy. I'm pretty sure it's, I'm sure it's a boy.

NGES KYIS RGYAS PA SKYES DU GSOL BA ZHES SO So he was really happy. DE YANG RGA' CHE'I DE RO STON NI DEK LA PA YOD PA NI RGYAL NAS BDAG GIS YON NUS MON NAS MON MON PA'I BU'I MTHONG BA'O NGO Oh, I hoped for a boy all these years and here he comes. MTHONG BA'O BDAG GIS BU RUNG BAR GYUR GCIG May the child survive.

MI RUNG BAR MA GYUR GCIG May he not be deformed. SON NA BDAG GIS BYA BA BDAG BYAS PA ZHOG GCIG May he enjoy serving his father. SRED PA NI LEN CHE SO BAR ZHOG GCIG May he be well taken care of.

NOR GAL LA BYAS PA ZHOG GCIG May he also have the karma to be wealthy. BDAG GIS RIGS KYI RIGS DU GNAS PAR ZHOG May he carry on my family line for many years. BDAG CHAGS DE ZHI BA'I OG DO'ANG BDAG CHAGS KYI PHYIR MANG YANG RUNG YUNG YANG RUNG DE BYIN BDAG BYIN LA SON NAMS BDAG BYIN NAS After his parents die, may he continue to make offerings for his father.

You just had the Chinese holiday, right? Honoring the dead? Like last week, right?

Yeah, a few days ago.

[Говорящий 2]
Good, okay. What is this? Oh yeah, okay.

All right.

[Говорящий 1]
Okay, good. Okay. In two minutes, right?

Okay. I have to make an announcement in two minutes. And we'll continue the story in the second class, okay?

MANG YANG RUNG YANG RUNG DE BYIN BDAG BYIN LA SON NAMS DE NYID GANG DAG GANG DU SKYE BZHIN SGRO BA DE NI SONG ZHIG BYAS YOD NGUR ZHOG GCIG So he made all these prayers about what his son should do for him after he dies. DE BU CHAGS PAR RIGS NAS BU'I RIM ROL BYANG BA'I PHYIR GANG SANG GI BRTEN DU NYAM RUNG GZU ZHAG DE Jang would say, then he took care of his wife whenever she got cold. He covered her in blankets.

Tsal would say, every time she got hot, he would fan her. MEN PA'I RTEN PA'I SRED He had doctors hanging around. HA BYANG GA MA YIN PA RNAMS He wouldn't let her eat spicy Mexican food.

There's a tradition in Abhidharma that a woman shouldn't eat food which is too spicy when she's pregnant. The child is very sensitive. HA BYANG GA MA YIN PA HA BYANG GYUR NA Not too sour, not too hot.

Spicy. Sour or spicy. GYUR NA MA YIN PA DANG HA BYANG NAN TSA And not too salty either.

YIN PA RNAMS DA HA BYANG RNGA BA And not too sweet either. HA BYANG ROL TSA BA MA YIN PA And not too strongly spiced. HA BYANG RGA BA MA YIN PA Not too astringent.

GYUR NA NAN TSA DANG RANG BAR DANG So they avoided all these foods. They got fancy clothes ready for the child. RNAMS PA RGYUR BA'I GZHAN PHYI NA NAN HANAN HANAN This is getting too long, right?

You do my lesson directly. And they didn't make any unpleasant noises in the house. When eight months had passed, and nine months, BU CHUNG a boy came out.

BU CHUNG GYUR GZUGS ZHANG Very healthy. RTA NA GDUG Beautiful to gaze upon. RDZAS PA Handsome.

GTOGS ZANG BA Nice complexion. GZER GYI GANG PHYIR DGOS GDUG DAG GDUG PA Well-shaped skull. BSLAB PA RING BA Nice hands.

BRAL BA'I DBYE CHE BA A prominent forehead, which is a sign of intelligence. NA MTHO BA A long nose, I'm sorry, but a beautiful nose. MIN MA GDUG PA Beautiful lips.

All of his arms, legs, fingers, and toes were NAR. Were complete. That's what parents do when their baby comes out, they start counting toes and fingers, right?

GYUR MING GCIGS SKAD DAG ZHIG MING SDOGS PAR BYED PAS And then it came time to name the child. NYES RDU RNAMS NA RE Don't forget that the relatives said, don't forget to name him a girl's name. So they named him RTZA BA'I PHUNG MO Maitra Kanyaka, which means daughter of Maitra.

The father's name was Maitra. Now, I want the next image ready, but not till I tell you. If you wanted to make the name Maitra, what do you call that?

Both sexes? Could go either way. You could use the I ending in Sanskrit.

You could call Maitra, my tree. If you want it to have the same effect. So, ta-ta-da!

We were translating this sutra and Seiji and his wife, Noor, had a baby and they decided to call him Maitri. So, that's Maitri. Dancing at the Lam Rim, teaching yesterday.

Okay, and he was named after this child. Cool? And this child's going to have some special experiences, which we'll find out in the next episode.
