[Speaker 1]
Okay, we're going to do a meditation, so get ready for meditation. Relax your eyelids, relax the corners of your mouth, stomach comes in just a little bit. Fingers relaxed, shoulders relaxed, and then come to your breath.

Deep exhales, long exhales. And if you want to focus better, you can imagine that the breath is coming in and out of the place between your eyebrows. There's a sweet spot, there's a special spot between your eyebrows and a little bit up higher, and then go inside your skull and you can find a sweet spot for concentration.

And try to find it, and then stay there, and you can imagine that you're breathing in and out of there. So we'll be quiet for a few minutes, and try to experiment and find this sweet spot. Then we'll do the traditional preliminaries.

The purpose of them is to clean away negative karma and collect some good karma just before you meditate. And the most powerful karma is to bring one of your teachers in your life to this room, to sit in front of you. And just relax and enjoy and be quiet with them for a few minutes now.

And think about some good quality they have, and that you would like to develop. Then make some offering to them. Something beautiful, anything in the world that you would like to offer to your teacher.

Then open your heart and let them know any mistakes you've made. Then also tell your teacher about the good things you've done, especially you worked so hard to come here, and how hard you're working at this retreat. Then ask your teacher to teach, keep teaching us for the rest of our lives.

Ask them to stay close. Now please try to imagine what kind of seed in your past created this teacher in your life? Who's your close teacher, and what kind of karma did you do to create this teacher?

And you can use the first two laws of karma to try to figure out what kind of thing did you do in the past to create this teacher. First law of karma, like makes like. Watermelons make watermelons.

So, it must be that I shared the Dharma in the past, maybe a long time ago, and that created this teacher. And it must have been a much smaller seed which is creating days, or months, or years of relationship with this teacher. So, in some cases we can remember what we did when we were young to create this teacher.

And in some cases we can't remember, and so in those cases I would like you to try to reconstruct, try to make a movie or video of a scene many years ago where you planted the seed for this teacher. And then have fun and make the picture very beautiful. And by imagining what maybe you did to create this teacher many, many years ago, sometimes you can access the memory, even past life.

I don't have a complete power to see my past life seed, but by meditating a lot, I was just trying to imagine what happened that I met my teacher. And this video keeps coming up in my mind, that I'm in India many lives ago, and I'm in a crowd of people, and we are waiting for a festival. And then down the street comes all these elephants, and there's a very beautiful little cabin on top of one elephant, and it has a little window.

And way from the back of the crowd, through this window, I see my lama for the first time, and we catch our eyes together, and then I don't see them after that. And I believe that was a seed in my past life to meet my lama in this life. And maybe it's just imagination, or maybe it's a real seed, or maybe when I imagine, then the real seed is deciding my imagination.

So, we'll spend maybe 5-10 minutes. Think about one of the sweet teachers in this life that you had. Could be your mother or father.

Could be a school teacher who influenced you a lot. Could be a yoga teacher. Could be a spiritual teacher.

Then try to just play, have fun. Think about a former life when you planted this small little seed. Like the elephant parade, the moment in the elephant parade.

And we'll spend about 5 minutes. Let your mind be open, relaxed, happy, and let the imagination create a scene in a past life when you planted this teacher. And the real seeds will help create an imagination.

Okay, relax 5-10 minutes and make a beautiful scene in your past life when you planted your favorite teacher. Then please come back to your breath. Three deep exhales, and with each exhale give the good karma of this meditation to people in the world.

And slowly you can open your eyes. Take a stretch. You guys have a microphone?

Anybody like to share their story? It doesn't have to be true. It's just what came in your mind.

Microphone. Yes.

[Speaker 2]
Okay. I was what it appeared to be ancient Mexico. I will translate myself.

[Speaker 1]
Oh, auto translator.

[Speaker 2]
Yeah. So, it was fuzzy because I'm not very good at generating complete full 3D images. And the feeling I got is that I was some kind of, I don't know if government official or some sort of leader in this community.

We had some technology, but then there was a war going on back then. It was like an intergalactic war. Yeah, and then there were some people who came from a spaceship.

And they had a little kid. This beautiful little kid. Very similar energy than Nicolás.

And I think it was you, Geshe-la. Geshe Michael. And the killing of the war kept on going.

Many people that came from your spaceship got killed. And I took care of you for like a couple of days. And I felt the love that I feel for my son right now.

And then some, I don't know, uncle or some family member from that planet you came from took you away. And it was really sad, but left me with a lot of love in my heart. Because I think that was like the first time I felt like amorcito.

Amorcito is what I call this feeling of love you have. It's a sweetness. And then later the story kept going.

And I was like, I think World War II. And I was drowning. And then a ship came.

And I just felt hope, but then I drowned. And I think you were there, but it felt great. I was feeling hope, but then changed.

And then now you're here. And please don't take the ship. And stay.

[Speaker 1]
Anyone else? Thank you.

[Speaker 2]
Gracias.

[Speaker 1]
Close to you, Ma. My meditation, I was, it was back in the Pacific Northwest where I'm from. And it was long ago when it was just indigenous peoples living there.

And my teacher... Oh, sorry.

[Speaker 2]
My teacher, Yvonne Jakes, she was a high placed woman in that aboriginal community.

[Speaker 1]
Like a medicine woman elder. Como una mujer medicina anciana.

And she was in the forest, and she was sick, and she wasn't doing well, and she couldn't even move, and no one was there to help her. And I was a bird.

Y yo era un ave. And I saw her suffering, and I knew that she needed help.

And as a bird, I decided that her life was more precious than mine.

[Speaker 2]
So I gave up my life to feed her.

[Speaker 1]
Así que entregué mi vida para alimentarla.

[Speaker 2]
And she took that offering, and she ate me.

[Speaker 1]
And I helped her become stronger. Y la ayudé a que retomara fuerza.

That's a good thing. Gracias.

[Speaker 2]
Anyone else?

[Speaker 1]
Luka, you had one, Luka. No? Zhenzhen or Luka?

Luka. No? Luka.

No? Go ahead.

[Speaker 2]
I speak in Chinese. Zhenzhen can help the translator.

[Speaker 1]
Very good. I'm going to speak in Chinese, and Zhenzhen will help me with the translation. I used to have a chance to have a peek of my previous life.

It was when Buddha was alive. One day I was having fun on the street, and back then I was only 10 years old.

It was when Buddha was on this planet, and back then I was only having fun. I was a girl who was about 10 years old.

[Speaker 2]
Then I saw Manjushri's white lion that he was riding on, and some Bhadras, the white elephant that he was riding, and they were just walking in front of me.

[Speaker 1]
I was playing with my friends on the street, and they were having a lot of fun, so we took a detour and followed them for a while. I remember that I was just having fun with my friends, y luego tomamos una dirección hacia ellos y nos encontramos con ellos.

Back then, in that life, I became a king. I died because of my headache, like I had a disease of a headache.

I died when I was about 50 years old. Cuando morí tenía 50 años.

When I died, I was lying on a bed in a garden, and there were 7 or 8 wives around me.

[Speaker 2]
Okay, when I died, I was in a garden, like I was laying in a bed in the middle of the garden, and I was surrounded by 7 or 8 wives.

[Speaker 1]

[Speaker 2]
But I have a big regret, because even though I had so many wives, I didn't have a child.

[Speaker 1]
So, my thought back then was like, they were not able to give me a child, so I should just give myself a child. I should just give birth myself, I mean.

That's when I saw my subconscious story, but I thought, how did I connect with Master in my meditation? This is what I think of my previous life, but in my meditation I thought about how I had the connection with my Master.

Because I remember the two Bodhisattvas riding the white lion and the white elephant. They were so amazing, so beautiful, so magnificent. I was so, so amazed by them.

Porque en ese momento, en esa vida, when I saw that those two Bodhisattvas riding the white lion and the white elephant, I felt that they were so beautiful, so gorgeous, and I really admired them, and I really respected them. Because at that time I was the king, so I was very amazed by every Buddhist teacher, and I often invited them to my palace to teach.

I also followed them to study. I remember this deep, deep respect. So back then, because I was the king, I had a great respect towards all sorts of Buddhist teachers, and I remember that I had the chance to invite them to come to the palace, and I respected them, and I admired them so much, and I listened to their teachings all the time when I invited them to come.

And I made a lot of offerings. I didn't find an exact connection with Geshe-la.

Okay, one more? Anybody?

I think, oh, anybody. Thank you very much, Geshe-la, for your teachings. What I saw in my meditation was I was in Saudi Arabia.

[Speaker 2]

[Speaker 1]
I was in Saudi Arabia. I don't know why. I don't know that place, but I was there.

[Speaker 2]

[Speaker 1]
And there were these little huts in the desert, like made out of fabric.

[Speaker 2]
Estaba yo dentro de una. Estaba mucha gente pasando por los pasillos.

[Speaker 1]
I was inside one of them, and there were a lot of people passing through the halls.

[Speaker 2]

[Speaker 1]
And you were there talking to someone, not very close to where I was, and you were there giving him instructions, talking about the seeds.

[Speaker 2]

[Speaker 1]
And I listened, and I thought it was very wise what you were saying, so I came out of the house, and I saw you were speaking with the other person.

[Speaker 2]

[Speaker 1]
And that was the seed I took throughout my life, and I was living and taking decisions with that knowledge I listened to. And sometimes I forgot it, because it was very little what I listened to.

[Speaker 2]

[Speaker 1]
And now I have the seed to listen to more complete teachings and to apply them in my life.

Arabia Saudita. Y no puedes tener esa historia si no tienes semillas.

Puedes unir a muchas personas.

Cuando lo enseñan, I think maybe you want to think about teaching it positive way.

But I'm following this ancient book, okay? SNGAGS PA DRANGS MA LA ZHIG NI THUN PA'AM MI THUN PA'I PHYI RIGS Number five is splitting up other people with your talking. And the first thing he says, it could be two people who like each other, or it could be two people who already don't like each other.

It could be two people who get along well with each other, or it could be two people who don't have a good relationship with each other. GDU BZHIN MA THUB PA The conception, required conception, is that these two people are friends. Or, these two people don't like each other and I will make them dislike each other even more.

KUN SLONG, the motivation. YAN THUB PA You want to see them get farther apart. Then why?

Why? Why do you want to do that? Maybe you are jealous, or you're just an unhappy person, but unfortunately, all of us have this seed.

Me, you, we all have it. We take some kind of unhealthy interest in dividing other people. Like there's a married couple, and you see the husband talking to some other woman, and maybe there's no problem, but still you feel like you want to say something to the wife.

You see what I mean? We have this habit, we like to cause trouble. We have this habit that we like to cause trouble.

We have this human nature. And often times it's not direct. Andriana, I know you like chun tzom, and that's good.

So, I think what she said about you yesterday, I don't think it was serious. Then you, just with a few words, maybe you hurt their friendship for many years, you see. So, this is a very dangerous, we called yesterday, this is a dangerous instrument.

Think before you talk. Am I hurting this people relationship? NYON MONGS DU GSUM GA What's that mean?

NYON MONGS DU GSUM GA Mr. Nick, I don't have my automatic dictionary WordSmith. Yeah, all three poisons. By the way, Word's partner Annie had a yoga program, so he went to support her.

But he's doing a very sexy text about, he's in the translator team, and he's doing a very beautiful text about the Mind Only School. And he will, I think he'll teach it in Diamond Mountain in October. So, somebody tell me, we have the three poisons, right?

The three animals in the middle of the Wheel of Life. Who's the snake? Anger.

How can you do this negative karma out of anger? Somebody help me out. Yeah, usually they put jealousy in desire.

She got this husband, I want that one. But it can be anger also. Yeah, so you dislike Andriana and you tell her something about chun tsum.

Although she doesn't have karma to be disliked by anyone. How about ignorance? Ignorance is more of a viewpoint.

Yeah, I can take away Andriana's partner if I create trouble with chun tsum, or something like that, you see what I mean? The idea that you can get something by hurting somebody. I can take away Andriana's partner if I tell her about chun sum.

The idea that you can take away something from someone if you hurt someone is a very fundamental ignorance. Okay. SBYOR BA THUN PA YOD BA DANG MI THUN PA MI BDUN PAR BSDOD PA STE The action that you undertake.

SBYIS BSAM PA SBYOR BA And this is interesting I think for the translators. THUN PA YOD BA Divide people who were friends. Yeah, divide people who were friends.

Or MI THUN PA MI BDUN PAR Or the people who had a bad relationship and they don't have it anymore, you make them separate more. For this you have to understand the verb BDUN PA. There's a special word in Tibetan.

It means when two groups of people are having a problem, or two people are having a problem. BDUN PO means a circle. In the monks and nuns vow, we are required to wear a BDUN PO clothes, a skirt.

It's just one circle of cloth, and then there's a very complicated way to tie it. The first two weeks you are a monk or nun, many people see your underwear. It falls down, you know.

So that's BDUN PO. And as a verb, it means bring people together. Then here it says, there's two kinds of bad deed number five.

People who are already BDUN PO, you divide them. And people who are not BDUN PO, you make sure they don't come together. Two versions.

DI LA BSTAN PA DANG RDZUN GYIS DRA MA BYAS PA GANG YIN YANG BSKYED MED This is very interesting. The words you use to separate those two people, they can be true or they can be false. So maybe Chundzom really did say something about Andriana.

So if I tell Andriana, I'm sure she didn't mean anything, but you know, she did say that thing about you. Even if it's true, you have to think about how will this affect their friendship. If it's something very serious, Chundzom is planning to, I don't know, murder Andriana tomorrow.

Then you should say something. It's okay. Oh, she will die and they won't be friends.

So even if it's true, but it's not necessary to help the person. Maybe Chundzom had too many margaritas. And she said something, she didn't really mean it.

You don't have to report everything to people's friends. Even if it's true. If it's not necessary.

And then obviously to lie or to exaggerate what Chundzom said. I don't know. Chundzom was saying, Andriana looks a lot more beautiful nowadays.

But you say, Chundzom said something about your hair. Then the person gets a doubt in their mind. That's the bad deed.

The other person gets a doubt about each other. So it can be true or it can be false. Even if it's true, think about, before you talk, is this really necessary?

Is this really helping these two people? Okay, ,GA'I PHYI GYIS, ,DI DAG YON TAN DU TSUL YANG, ,DI LA YON TAN MED PA MA SREG RGYUN CHEN PO YIN PAS, ,JAR MI RUNG Some people feel like it's their important responsibility to tell friends everything the other friend said about them. In English, we call nosy people or busybody.

They are like TV news announcer. They feel like it's their responsibility to tell everything other people said about them. They feel like they're doing a public service.

He says, YON TAN DU TSUL YANG, they think it's a public service. YON TAN MED PA MA SREG, not only is it not a public service, RGYUN CHEN PO It's a huge bad deed. It's a huge mistake.

Okay, we'll finish the fourth step, THAR THUG, and then we'll take a nice pee-pee break. THAR THUG NI What is the final step of this bad deed? ZIG DE DON GOS BA STE In most of the verbal bad deeds, the moment that the other person understands what you're trying to say, then you made the karma.

So watch, okay? Observe. So, Andriana, I was sitting with Chunsum yesterday.

No bad deed yet. No bad deed yet. We were having a nice cappuccino and no bad deed yet.

And then, no, I'm sorry, no THAR THUG yet. No number four yet. No complete karma yet.

And I'm sure she didn't, you know, no bad deed yet. No complete bad deed. I'm sure she didn't mean it when she said about your friend that he said he doesn't like you, or something like that, okay?

Then there's still not a bad deed. Andriana's listening. And she's like, yeah.

Okay. Yeah. And then suddenly she get it.

And she goes, the moment she gets it, you planted the seed. DUN GO'A DUN GO'A Then you planted the seed. THER MED ZIG MED PAS BAR BU'I SGO NAS RGYAL MNGAL TU RGYAS PAR GYUR NA LAS LAM RDZOGS NA And if because of that understanding, there starts a little doubt between the two people, then you did a complete karma.

TSIG STE MA GONG BAR MI THON PA SOGS YID DBYANG BA MA SRONG NA TSIG RGYAL PAR SGROL This is funny. He says, if Chundzom says something to Andriana with the intention of splitting up her friends, Andriana, this guy said this thing about you, and then Andriana we know has a pure heart, and she doesn't get it. She's like, yeah.

Okay. That's nice. Then it's not a complete karma.

It's not number five. But, it is number seven. So we didn't reach number seven, because we're only on number five.

But what is number seven? Useless talk. Useless talk.

So I'll tell you something exciting. Anytime you do the first three negative talking, you automatically do number four also. Every talking karma is double.

When you lie, it's useless talk. When you split up other people, it's useless talk. When you call somebody a bad name, it's automatically useless talk.

So unfortunately, bad deed number four, five, and six, you always get number seven automatically. Two karmas. Geshe-la, I have trouble, you know, you say four, five, six, seven.

Can you just say what they are? Don't give me the number. I didn't memorize them yet.

Kanto no yores. What's that mean? Yeah, you can memorize twenty, thirty rock and roll songs, right?

Whole thing, you can sing it in the shower, I know. You can memorize ten words, it's okay. Not like me last night singing.

I never learned the song, okay? I'm telling you the truth. We learned that in the monastery.

We have to recite thousands of pages of books. Then you can get away with it if you're chanting with a thousand monks. If you're chanting with a thousand monks.

Sometimes the whole line, nobody knows it. You're like ... You're like ...

That's why they do that sound. Because nobody knows the prayer. Okay, have a nice pee-pee break.

Okay, let's start. DRUG PA TSIG TSUB GYI GZHI NI We're starting with number six. TSIG TSUB TSUB means we had it in Adam's logic text.

You guys remember? TSUB means like sandpaper or Geshe Michael's skin. Rough.

Then TSIG means word, so harsh words. Call somebody stupid or something like that. What is the word I want to learn in Spanish?

Harsh? No, stupid. Tonto.

Tonto? Tonto. Okay, good.

De tonto. I don't know why people like to learn the bad words first. NAR SEMS SKYE BA'I GZHUR GYUR PA'I SEMS CAN DANG You can do it towards someone.

It can be a human. You want to hurt their feelings, right? But I have bad news for you.

TSER MA SOGS SEMS CAN MIN PA GNYIS DKA'I What's it mean, Nick? You want to try it? TSER MA SOGS SEMS CAN MIN PA We had SER MA in Ben's text.

The thorn, okay? SEMS CAN MA YIN PA SEMS CAN MA YIN PA Yeah, you can also do number six towards traffic jams, weather, sharp thorns, okay? Just in the car by yourself.

Then that's number six, okay? I never heard Vi say a bad word. She said, in private I say, okay?

DUS SHES MA THUR BA The conception should be unmistaken. This gets complicated. It's like you think someone's a human, but they're not a human.

They're a spirit and you say some bad word to them. You don't make a complete karma. NYON MONGS DU GSUM PA The emotion, the feeling can be all three poisons.

Give me an example, snake. He gave an example, Diamond Mountain Rattlesnake, right? He goes, I hate you guys, I hate you.

Desire? I don't know, you like somebody's partner and you say something bad, you know. Ignorance?

That's good, yeah. You think the cause of someone leaving you alone is to say something bad to them, okay? GUNG SLONG, motivation.

You decide to say something. This is a principle of Stanley Bandhu's text. LAS LAS JIG RTEN NA TSOGS SKYES BDE NYID SEMS PA'I DANG DE BYED SEMS PA'I YID KYI LAS YIN NO DE BYED LU DANG SNGAGS KYI LAS Opening lines of the fourth chapter of the Abhidharmakosha.

Don't ask me the other lines, I forgot them. But the first four lines I remember. LAS LAS JIG RTEN NA TSOGS SKYES Karma has created all the planets of the universe, including this one.

BDE NYID SEMS PA'I DANG DE BYED Karma means anytime your mind thinks anything, that's karma. That's what we call raw karma. That's krudo.

Karma krudo and raw karma. Krudo is okay, like crude oil or something. That's okay.

Raw karma, and that's the most powerful one. Even if you think this guy is blank, but you don't say it, you already made a karma. Then BDE NYID SEMS PA'I DANG DE BYED means anytime you have a little thought and then it causes you to do something or say something.

SEMS PA'I YI SKYES LAS YIN NO Mental karma is anytime you have a small thought. DE BYED LUS DANG SNGAGS KYI LAS It inspires you or it pushes you to do something with your mouth or something with your body. You can try to stop the karma between your mind and your mouth.

You know, you're just a Buddhist people, a good Buddhist practicing group. There's a lot of half-finished sentences. Pachi, you can't believe.

I got to tell you. That means we have a good group. A lot of people going around like What's the jorwa?

SHI SEMS PA'I JOR BA What's the jorwa? SHI SEMS PA'I JOR BA MIG SHAR BA LA SHAR BA SHES PA'AM If somebody ... SHAR BA means a strange eye, like an eye like this.

It can mean also blind. I was going to learn Spanish the third time I learned Spanish. I was trying to learn from Don Quixote.

In the first ... it's too difficult. The first page I remember said amor es ciego.

Blind love. That's because they didn't know the word for hormones. Okay, SHAR BA LA MIG SHAR BA So it could be true, the person's eyes are a little bit funny and you say ...

I'll teach you a new Tibetan word, okay? MED GYOR DGOS PA MED GYOR DGOS PA MED GYOR means a cannon. And in the old days in Tibet, one guy has to put his face down near the cannon and it goes like this.

Then one eye will be like this, you see? So it's a way to criticize someone who has ... their eyes are not perfect.

It's a way to criticize someone whose eyes have something weird, that they're not perfect. Hey, gunnery sergeant, gunnery ... you call somebody gunnery sergeant.

I'm teaching you some good Tibetan insults, okay? Her husband looks like a gunnery sergeant. Okay, so number one, it could be true.

Or SHAR BA MING PA LA SHAR BA Someone doesn't have strange eyes, but you still call them gunnery sergeant. BDEN DZIN GANG YANG RUNG BA'I It doesn't matter true or false. But you criticize another person for their behavior or their race or something about their body.

Etc. Many, many things, okay? BAR DOG PA'I SEMS NA GNAS PA NYANG PO MA BA YANG Then he said something cool.

If you say something sweet, but your motivation is to piss off the other person, that's also number six. You often get it at a government office. You know, we really like to help you.

Your call is important to us. Okay, like that. Doesn't have to be a harsh word, right?

And we said yesterday, you can use a harsh word to your friend out of love, right? And I gave you some examples. I gave you examples the other day, but I cannot repeat in front of ...

My boss is here. You remember. Alejandro had trouble translating those words.

THAR THOD NI THAR THOD NI DE SDUG BSNGAL BA'O What do you think is THAR THOD? When is the action complete? Yeah, the other person understands, okay?

I knew a monk, he used to curse at me in Tibetan, then I didn't understand what he said. Then I'm like, thank you. And he'd get more upset.

I'll teach you a good Tibetan bad word, okay? If you're using a hammer and you hit your finger and it hurts bad, in English you would say, you know the word, but in Tibetan you say, KUANG CHOG GSUM Three jewels. But it depends on how you say it.

Like, jeez, okay, don't say it, just know about it. DI LA BSTUN KHO BA DGOS PAS The person really should understand what you're saying. Therefore, if you say it towards like an animal who doesn't understand what you're saying, it's not a complete karma.

If the motivation is there, you still make some karma. There's a difficult word here, it's BYUNG BA. It means a kind of spirit being, okay?

It's a common verb to occur. And it also means the five or the four elements. In Sanskrit it's bhuta, bhuta.

But it also means a spirit being. Okay, we reached number seven. What is it?

Useless talk, blah blah. I'll translate it. I'll translate into English, okay?

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. BDUN PA SNGAGS KYANG GI ZHI NI What's the material you use to commit this one? ZHI Useless words.

Useless words. du shi nyi kang drupar dupe dun la der du shepa-o As soon as you're in your mind, you frame the sentence and the picture in your mind. What foolish thing did Donald Trump do today?

I wrote a new book. It's a political book about international relationships. Some sponsor gave us, I think $70,000 for publicity.

Then I made a book about it. I've never hired anybody. I hired a professional publicity person to advertise the book.

Three months later they gave me back the money. They said, forget it. Release the book next year.

I said, why? They said, only thing the newspaper wants to write about is what foolish thing did Donald Trump do today. There's no other news.

du shi nyi So when you make that picture in your mind, I want to talk about this person. di la yul yu me kang tar yang, tam dren tse jung gyel du me na, ngu shi jung Even if you don't have an exactly clear picture in your mind of what you want to say, some people's mouth goes on automatic. They start talking about what Donald Trump did today, and they just go automatic.

They're not even thinking about it. tam dren tse means anything that pops into your mind. jung gyel means just pops out.

ngu shi jung, that's the main... ngu shi means the main thing, the main value. kun long means you decide to speak.

kun long means you decide to speak. The motivation. nyomong, the feeling can be any one of the three poisons.

jorwa, shi sampa jorwa, right? What's the action? gyelpo dang mark la sokpe tam mawa dang, talking about politics.

Talking about violence. Who killed who yesterday? Who bombed who?

It's a very popular human subject for two and a half thousand years. tatar rang re drapa drabu kyang gunpay ming kor droway tsun gyi tse Then there's a custom in the monastery. In the evening, the older monks, they go on a drakor.

Drakor means you walk around the whole monastery. It's a custom for older monks to get exercise, and they will take their rosary. You're supposed to walk around the monastery like, I don't know, 20 times, 50 times, and you're supposed to do om mani padme huma mani padme huma.

mi mongpo shik du ne means, but anytime you get more than one person together, there will start some useless talk. Om mani, did you hear what that monk did the other day? Om mani, did you hear what that monk did the other day?

Then people start to talk. There's a word here, teju, teju, okay? You see the te here.

jukto che, jukto che in colloquial means stick your nose in other people's business. Then he says, start talking about the Tibetan government. Start talking about a relationship between Tibet and China.

Start talking about relationship between Tibet and India. Get involved in useless political discussions. So, there's a story, first Panchen Lama, Lobsang Chukyi Gyeltsen, very important in Vajrayana lineage.

You will be studying, those of you who finish the 18 courses and you start Vajrayana in Guadalajara, you will be studying his books. So, one day he was, he got to be very old, I think, in Tibet they say he lived to a hundred years, but I think it was 96 or something like that. And when he was very old, he was doing a retreat in the mountain, above a valley, and then it was supposed to be a one month retreat.

And like 20 days through the retreat, his attendant breaks into the cave and he says, we got trouble. And the Lama is like, why are you interrupting my retreat? You know you're not supposed to do that.

And he said, Lama, I'm sorry, but there's going to be a war in the valley this afternoon. Two armies are approaching and they're going to be fighting in the valley. Then I just thought you should know, because you're going to hear it.

Then the Lama said, all right, I'll break my retreat. He's like 80 something years old. He walked down to the valley and he stood in the middle of the valley.

And the two armies came and they got close to each other. He's like, anybody want to start killing people, you got to start with me. Who wants to shoot the first arrow, shoot it at me.

Then he's already very famous and he's like 80 something years old. Both of the armies are confused. Then he said, general, bring your general, bring your general.

And the two generals came to the middle of the valley. He's like this with the general. He said, there's going to be a lot of killing today.

Even a general might die. If the general could get a big bag of gold just before the war, he could just quietly go home and build himself a big new house. Understand?

He gave the gold to the general. Each general he gave a bag of gold. Then suddenly the war was finished.

Why am I talking about that? You should get involved in politics if you can do something. It's your responsibility.

In a proper way, like giving gold to the two generals, no, I mean, it's good to be involved with politics. I went to jail when I was younger, I went to jail. It's a good thing.

But blah blah blah about politics is a different thing. The people who blah blah blah, they never go to jail. They don't really change anything.

Because changing things takes a lot of work. And it takes a lot of time. And it might take 20 years or something.

Like Casa Huichol. Gero's mom, Rosario, Rocio. She spent 25 years making this hospital for native people.

And struggle without enough money. Take care of sick people. That's real politics.

Not talking about politics. Okay, so it's okay to be political. But be political with your body and not your mouth.

MANG PO LENG MO BYAS PA DE YIN Blah blah, just a lot of blah blah. SNGAGS RGYAL DI MI DGE BA SPYOD PA'I NANG NAS BYUNG SHES YIN YANG Number seven is the lightest of the ten. Number seven is the lightest, the least strong of the four.

You know what he's going to say, YANG, but RANG RES MI TSE STONG ZAD STONG BA'I THABS LA NA MED PAR YIN TE But it's the very best way to waste a human life. It takes a lot of hours. Blah blah, you started blah blah and suddenly three hours is finished.

You don't have time. You think you have time, but you don't have time. Your body is on a clock.

One day it will fail, it will fail everybody. You have a number of breaths that you will breathe in this life. So in North American English we say don't waste your breath.

You have a certain debit card. The debit card has a certain number of breaths on it. It takes a lot of breath to do blah blah.

Each sentence you have to blah blah blah blah blah Good translation. So don't waste your breath. As long as you're still breathing, do something good for other people.

Don't waste your breath. TSOGS DANG GSOS BYAS DU SNGAGS KHYAD GYI GTAM BDE BA LA BRTEN NAS DRA SHAGS PHAN TSUNG DU TSOGS TE SNYING GANG SDOD MED GYI SKAD CHAGS MANG PO SHES PA'I SDUN DAG RDOR BA'I YANG NAS YANG DU'ONG The Lama said, I have seen in our own monastery when monks get together in their monk's room, most of the time it's just blah blah blah blah. So, if even monks are wasting their time in their monk room, meditation room, blah blah, then of course other people do.

By the way, people, you know, DCI level 8, it's all about leadership. And a big part of leadership is public speaking. So, when you, you know, all of us want to be a teacher, right?

And sometimes when you're teaching, everybody's like, wow Geshe Michael, that was so cool. Some people are like this, you know. I had two or three students, older students, completely fall asleep in the class.

If you're going to fall asleep in the class, try not to snore. There's a system we learned in the monastery. Like, your body is very straight, and your eyes are like this, and actually you're asleep.

You have to learn, you have to learn this skill. Anyway, if you want to be a public speaker, the first time I gave a public talk, Dharma talk, then it was a pretty big audience, and I wasn't the only speaker, and I got up to talk. It was like this, you know.

Then the guy says, you can start, you can start. Then I'm like, he said, this is Michael Roach, you know. Then he said, okay, you can sit down, you know.

And our next speaker, you know. Then I was really embarrassed, you know. And I went to my teacher, you know.

I said, what's the karma seed for becoming a public speaker? Then he said, there's one special seed. Don't do blah blah.

When you're with your friends, be careful. Just to talk about good things. Don't just talk about blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

So then I tried to plant the seed. Tried to control my mouth. Then I planted too many seeds.

Now I talk too much in the class. So anyway, if you want to be a public speaker, you can take a course in public speaking, what do you call it? Toastmaster course.

You can study, you can study different books, but just plant the karma, and it will come. If you plant the karma, then take a course, it's powerful. And the karma is, don't blah blah.

Then when you speak, people will be, wow, that's cool. Okay. All right, de na, we have about 10 more minutes, okay?

de na jor chenpu mangpun nang du nga la dak Atisha said, once you're with a group of people, watch your mouth carefully. Be aware, you know, there can be people who don't talk much, and they're careful with what they say, but then they meet three or four of their friends, then starts the blah blah blah blah blah blah. So, when you're with people, watch your mouth.

How many people? drok chik yu tsun che ne di la sab gu Be super careful if there's more than one person in the room. It means once there's you and one other person, blah blah will start.

shen yang drung dang chu rupay ten chu shepa nga kye yin Spending a lot of time talking about fictions, stories, you know, just stories, movies. That's a special kind of useless talk. Is it bad to watch movies?

No, it's okay. Dharma person has to know how to relax, and Spiderman is relaxing. So, that's okay.

You are not a bad person if you go to a movie. Don't go to too many. Don't watch three movies in one day on your computer.

But if you're tired from doing good work, then go have a little party and go to a movie, okay? My Lama took me to all the Dirty Harry movies. Make my day.

He loves this guy who do the karate, like Chuck Norris. He knows how to relax. So that's okay, but don't spend all your time talking about something which is just a story.

It's not true, right? CHU ROL PA'I RTEN CHAD means outside books. Outside book in the modern life.

Like, did you hear about this year's psychology bestseller? It's called if you feel mad, get angry. Don't hold it in.

Just say what comes in your mind. Call this guy an asshole, anything. There was a psychology bestseller looking out for number one.

Take care of yourself. Ignore other people. These real books, this year's bestseller.

Then next year there'll be a new psychology book and a new bestseller. You have access to two and a half thousand year bestseller. It worked for one hundred generations of people.

You don't need this year's bestseller. People ask me, did you read this book? Did you read that book?

People give me many books. Usually at the airport before I leave. First they give me a big bag of something which is impossible to carry on the airport.

Then they give me a book. Then they say, this is very similar to Dharma. I say, oh, thank you very much.

I'm so happy about the security system. They are not allowed to come past security. On the other side of security, I throw the book in the garbage.

Why should I read a book which is close to Dharma, if I can read the Dharma? Why should I read a book which is close to Dharma, if I can study the Dharma? You know, honestly, sometimes people criticize me when I say this.

I don't care. I just throw them out. I don't need to read them.

Why should I read a book about this year's popular psychology, if I can read something which lasts for 2,000 years? It was written by a person who can see all the future. Do you make bad karma if you read a psychology book?

I don't think so. It depends on your motivation. But be careful.

Read a newspaper, magazine, look at the news on your phone or your laptop. It's mostly just sex, violence, what did Donald Trump have for breakfast? You don't need it, and it disturbs your mind.

Just open some Dharma book, or read something beautiful. Don't waste your time. You don't have time.

I have to stop. I stopped reading newspapers. I stopped watching the news because I found out it disturbs my meditation.

I can go a little bit deep, but I cannot go very deep if I'm reading newspapers. If I'm watching the news, and I see three people got killed in a bomb, or this politician got caught having sex with this person, you can still meditate, but you cannot go deep. So, choose.

Do you want to see emptiness, or do you want to find out what Trump said today? Because you cannot have both. Okay.

LO RGYEN MA RTOGS PA'I LUS SNGAGS KYIS MI DGE BA THUG CA GZHAN LA BYAS DU CHUGS PA'I KYANG RANG NYID LA LAS LAM DU GYUR BAR GSUNGS This is a little bit controversial, but okay. What is he saying? Yeah.

So, so far we covered seven negative karmas. He says here, with six of them, if you encourage someone else to do them, you get the same karma. Like if you encourage someone to kill somebody, you get the karma from killing.

Then he says LO RGYEN MA RTOGS Except for sexual misconduct. But I don't know. I don't know what he's thinking.

I think the idea is that somehow you don't have the personal experience. But I don't see a difference. If you encourage someone to commit adultery, it seems to me you would get the same karma.

So when you reach a place like this in the scripture, those big lamas, they're careful. They don't say, oh, this guy is wrong. They say, we should look into this further.

We should find out what's he thinking. Okay. That's all.

We're about to start the three mental karmas, which are more powerful. Someone asked me yesterday, they said when I was younger, 20 years old, I did a very bad thing. I killed a dog and they asked me, what can I do about this karma?

So next class, it's coming in the book how to clean negative karma. But if we don't reach it before the end of this course in Guadalajara, in Chalapa, you're a translator, okay. Then I'll cover how to get rid of old bad seeds.

So before we finish the course, I'll cover that. Then I think tomorrow sometime we should take a group photo. I suggest I have a class in the morning tomorrow, and at the end of the class we'll take a group photo.

So if you want to comb your hair or something, try to find some hair and do that for tomorrow morning. Okay.
