[Speaker 1]
Okay, so today we'll review three different meditations. In the morning we'll do the warm-up meditation.

[Speaker 2]
That's like if you go to the Olympics, and you are going to run a race, then first you have to warm up.

[Speaker 1]
And meditation is the same. So, you can't just like make breakfast for your kids and then sit down and meditate. The difference is too sudden.

You are very busy and then sit down. Like a car, if you park your car at your house, in the morning you want to go to work, you back out of the garage.

[Speaker 2]
Then you stop. Then you go to work.

[Speaker 1]
So, between the backing out and the going, you have to stop. Otherwise you will break the car. It doesn't work, okay?

So, meditation is the same. You can't just like cook breakfast for your kids.

[Speaker 2]
Mommy's going to go meditate for half an hour. Okay?

[Speaker 1]
Especially if you have bad kids like mine. You need to relax a little bit before you meditate. So, we're going to do that preparation meditation this morning.

And if you'd like, you can record it. And then for a week or something, you can do it with the recording. And then after that, you just do it on your ...

you can remember. Then in the afternoon, we will practice dying. Then don't go home from Thailand and tell your family, we practiced dying in the program.

But actually, it's a very smart thing to do. Everybody has to take their rental car back to the airport. Then it's better to know what's going to happen, and practice.

[Speaker 2]
Then you can have a nice day. Maybe you can jump into a Buddha's bunny, or Arya's bunny.

[Speaker 1]
So, we'll practice that in the afternoon. Then in the evening, we'll practice coffee meditation. Then some people told me, Geshe-la, we don't have to practice coffee meditation.

You just put your head on your pillow and you think about the good things you did today, and the good things you saw other people do.

[Speaker 2]
It's not so difficult.

[Speaker 1]
But, around the world, the DCI teachers who taught the other day, the two days, I was talking to one of them. They said, Geshe-la, strange, people in Asia have same problem as people in Europe and South America. When you tell them to think about the good things about themselves, they can't do it.

You say, what good thing did you do today? Oh, I got angry at Kelly Tan, and I told something bad to Uta, and I was jealous of Yiyi.

[Speaker 2]
Then you say, no no, tell me the good things.

[Speaker 1]
I also got sleepy in the meditation. During the offering, I'm just thinking about going to bed. So, people have trouble to think about the good things they're doing.

So, we'll practice tonight. The word for meditation means to practice. Get used to something.

Okay?

[Speaker 2]
So, we'll do that in the evening.

[Speaker 1]
So, you shouldn't stop your spiritual practice on Wednesday afternoon. You should have some plan, and the meditation plan are these three things.

[Speaker 2]
Okay?

[Speaker 1]
If possible, in the morning, warm-up.

[Speaker 2]
At the end of the warm-up, we bring the heart teacher into our heart. And that's the best meditation in the world. And also, it's a good way to have a good day.

[Speaker 1]
All day in that heart teacher will talk to you. Somebody told Geshe Michael, oh, there's another good teacher coming to Taiwan while you're coming to Taiwan. Then I'm like ...

Good, yes, very good. What's her name? Then I get jealous.

[Speaker 2]
This is Geshe Michael's main problem.

[Speaker 1]
What's the teacher's name? Do they know how to talk Tibetan language? Then, then Lama in the heart ...

Geshe-la, you're jealous.

[Speaker 2]
Geshe-la, you're being jealous right now. Don't be jealous.

[Speaker 1]
Okay?

[Speaker 2]
Lama will talk to you.

[Speaker 1]
Sorry, it's good in the morning to put the Lama there. That's protection. Okay?

Then, you know, to practice how to die. You can do that in the afternoon or evening at home. So, in my job, I have to work crazy hours.

I have to go there 8 o'clock. I don't get home ... I don't go home till 8 o'clock or something.

[Speaker 2]
8 in the morning to 8 in the evening.

[Speaker 1]
Maybe your job is similar. Then, but I have a pretty good lunch break. So, I will go to a park or something.

I will carry my own lunch, you know, some sandwich or something. Instant noodle, very good. And I'll eat quickly, then I'll meditate a little bit.

[Speaker 2]
So, you can do that.

[Speaker 1]
And then in the evening, you know, coffee meditation before you go to sleep. Even if your partner is not Buddhist, and they they don't ...

[Speaker 2]
they're not so interested what you are doing.

[Speaker 1]
Still, you can lay down on the bed. You know? They start to snore, and you can stay awake a little bit, you know?

And do your coffee mingxiang next to them.

[Speaker 2]
It's okay.

[Speaker 1]
Okay?

[Speaker 2]
Quietly.

[Speaker 1]
Alright? So, that's the plan. And if you like, you can record these three meditations.

Okay?

[Speaker 2]
Let's start the first one.

[Speaker 1]
Then after you learn them, you don't need the recording. Okay. So, turn on your cell phone.

Except Geshe Michael. You can cough. Clear your throat.

He's playing rock and roll. Clear your throat. Okay.

Get ready. Close your eyes softly. Get the body comfortable and ready to stop moving.

Fingers are relaxed. Pull in the stomach a little bit. Little smile.

Eyelids not closed too hard. Eyelids closed softly. Forehead relaxed.

Shoulders back a little bit. And then please start watching your breath. Exhales are very long.

Inhale is automatic. Don't tighten your face when you start to watch your breath. Then when the mind thinks of something else, just softly bring it back to the breath.

Then please invite your heart teacher to come and sit with you.

[Speaker 2]
Knee to knee.

[Speaker 1]
The teacher shouldn't be a picture in your mind. The teacher should be real. And you can feel the warmth of their body.

And you can smell, real smell like a very special flower. And their face is very peaceful.

[Speaker 2]
And their eyes are full of love for you.

[Speaker 1]
And they are so happy that you are meditating.

[Speaker 2]
So take a few minutes and enjoy the heart teachers with you. If you haven't met your heart teacher yet, then you can just imagine them. What they look like.

[Speaker 1]
Then we bow down to our teacher. And the way to bow down in the mind is to think of something beautiful about our teacher that we would like to learn. That's why they're our teacher.

So we'll stay quiet for a few minutes. Try to think about one good thing about your teacher that you would like to also have.

[Speaker 2]
And we'll stay here for a few minutes.

[Speaker 1]
If you start thinking about something else, then slowly, just gently bring your mind back to the teacher. Then if we have lots of bad seeds in our mind, then our day won't go well. We won't be happy.

[Speaker 2]
Meditation will also not go well. So, very early in the meditation, it's important to clean those bad seeds.

[Speaker 1]
If you clean some of the new ones, it will automatically clean some of the bad ones.

[Speaker 2]
Old ones.

[Speaker 1]
So, please think about some small negative thoughts or actions you had in the last 24 hours. Little bit of jealousy. Little bit of anger.

[Speaker 2]
Maybe too much desire for food or something.

[Speaker 1]
And open your heart like a book.

[Speaker 2]
And show your lama everything, all the bad things in your heart. And it will make them clean. When you hide them, they get stronger.

When you open them to your heart teacher, it cleans them. So, we'll stay quiet for a few minutes.

[Speaker 1]
Think about all the things you did yesterday. And were there some small bad thoughts or actions? And happily tell your teacher.

Then again, it's very important, before meditation, to think about all your good seeds. And this will give a positive energy to the meditation. So now again, open your heart like a book.

Inside the book is like a golden light. This is your heart. And all the good seeds there, all the nice things you did yesterday, nice private thoughts you had about people, they are in your heart like bright golden seeds.

And show these to your heart teacher also. These are the sweet things I did yesterday. These are the sweet thoughts I had yesterday.

And when you're happy about the fresh good seeds, it will also strengthen the old good seeds.

[Speaker 2]
So, we'll stay here for a few minutes.

[Speaker 1]
Just relax. Think about nice things that happened yesterday. Nice thoughts you had.

[Speaker 2]
All the times you were thankful to someone else.

[Speaker 1]
And enjoy those seeds. If you start thinking about something else, then very gently, calmly, bring your mind back to the good seeds. During this time, you are not allowed to think about negative seeds.

At the end of this part, you can also think about the good seeds. Think about all the beautiful things that happened to you yesterday.

[Speaker 2]
Beautiful people that you met. Beautiful things you heard.

[Speaker 1]
Beautiful things that you saw. Because all of those are coming from your good seeds. So, you can also be happy about your old good seeds that made all the good things in your life.

So, we'll spend just a few minutes on that. What good things happening in your life right now? Because you made them happen.

You had those good seeds.

[Speaker 2]
Next part of the meditation preparation, we ask for teaching. Ask your heart teacher for teaching. Teachings can come in two ways.

[Speaker 1]
Like Dharma teaching, teachers teaching from some book. Or teaching can come in our life. We see some special good person and we try to use them as an example.

And teaching can also be negative teaching. Maybe your ex-husband, ex-wife, ex-girlfriend, boyfriend, they hurt you. Or somebody else hurt you.

Then you can also think, oh, this is teaching.

[Speaker 2]
They are teaching me to be a better person.

[Speaker 1]
They are teaching me what not to do. They are teaching me about emptiness.

[Speaker 2]
Because they don't come from themselves.

[Speaker 1]
So, ask for teachings.

[Speaker 2]
We'll stay here for a few minutes. Ask your teacher for teachings. Easy ones and difficult ones.

[Speaker 1]
If your mind starts to think about something else, then very quietly bring it back. If your legs hurt or your back hurts, if your legs or your back hurts, learn to not focus on it.

[Speaker 2]
Learn to not think about it. Now please ask your teacher to stay in your life.

[Speaker 1]
If we don't have a teacher, we cannot improve. We cannot change.

[Speaker 2]
Nothing will change us.

[Speaker 1]
And we will stay the same. We won't become a better person. So, ask the teacher, please stay in my life.

Maybe I'm not a great student. I know I could be better. But without you, I cannot improve.

[Speaker 2]
So, please be patient with me.

[Speaker 1]
Please love me.

[Speaker 2]
Please stay with me. We'll stay here for a few minutes.

[Speaker 1]
That completes the warm-up meditation. Now we ask the heart teacher to come into our heart. So, in your mind, ask them, please come in my heart and stay there all day and help me.

And the teacher is very happy that you asked. And they start to rise up off the ground. And as they rise, they get smaller.

And then finally, they're up towards the level of the top of your head. And their body turns around to face the same way as you. And then very softly, they come down to rest on the top of your head.

And they're only about the size of your hand. And then they get smaller and smaller until they are the size of your thumbnail. And then slowly, they start to sink into your head.

And they are coming down the front of your spine slowly like an elevator.

[Speaker 2]
And try to feel coming down your spine like warm honey.

[Speaker 1]
Then they reach the inside of your heart. And you say, please come in my heart.

[Speaker 2]
You say, please stay in my heart all day. Please teach me.

[Speaker 1]
Please help me when I make mistakes.

[Speaker 2]
And they get smaller and smaller until they are inside of one piece of sugar in your heart.

[Speaker 1]
Inside a little crystal is the lama. Very tiny. If you focus on them as tiny, it's easier to concentrate.

And you say, please will you stay there all day? Will you give me advice when I need it? And they're very happy, and they say, oh, that's perfect.

[Speaker 2]
I love you more than anything.

[Speaker 1]
I'm so happy you asked me to stay in your heart. Then a beautiful golden light comes out of their heart into your heart. And you send that light from your heart to all the people in your family, and to all the people you work with, all your friends.

And send the light to everyone in your city, and in your country. May all the people in my country be happy. And then cover the whole world with this golden light.

May every person in this world be happy. May all of them have a heart teacher inside of their heart. Three deep exhales.

[Speaker 2]
Three deep exhales. And then you can slowly open your eyes.

[Speaker 1]
Stretch.

[Speaker 2]
It's good to take a stretch after meditation.

[Speaker 1]
You can move your legs. Maybe they fell asleep. That's good.

Okay? In meditation. If the legs fall asleep, they don't hurt.

[Speaker 2]
If you move, they will hurt more.

[Speaker 1]
If you don't move, they will fall asleep. Then be careful when you stand up. Many people hurt their ankle when they stood up.

How long was that utta? Can you tell on your iPhone? Forty minutes?

That's a little bit long. It's a good length of meditation for you. Okay?

If you can do it in the morning.

[Speaker 2]
Forty minutes.

[Speaker 1]
That's very, very good. It's almost enough to see emptiness directly. So, try to spend like forty minutes in the morning.

If you don't have this much time, then on Monday, first day of the week, do ten or fifteen minutes of this meditation. Then stop the recording. Then dress very fast and go to work.

Next day, Tuesday, start the next part of the meditation. That's okay. You can spread this one over two days or three days.

The most important thing is that you try a few minutes every day. Nobody became Buddha by spending four hours on one day and then don't do anything for the rest of the week.

[Speaker 2]
Just do a little bit every day.

[Speaker 1]
If you get ... If the butt, if the pigu touches the cushion, you will make progress. Doesn't matter how long.

But the pigu must touch, the butt must touch the meditation mat every morning. You can just touch the butt on the meditation mat and then get up and go to work. But if the pigu touches the meditation mat, you will start to get a habit.

[Speaker 2]
That's a good habit.

[Speaker 1]
Because I don't care. Five minutes, ten minutes, play the recording, and then next day start at that place. Every two, three days you will do again.

If your legs hurt like this, then please, please, please, please, please, please, please just sit in chair. Why did Buddha sit on the floor? Two thousand five hundred years ago, they don't have chair.

So, we are living in this time. We have chair. You can use it.

No problem at all. Meditation is not something you do with your body. It's something you do with your mind.

Park the body in the most comfortable possible place. Maybe fill up the bathtub with warm water, put the body there, and then go into the mind. You see?

Bathtub.

[Speaker 2]
Then go inside the mind, forget the body.

[Speaker 1]
Be careful not to drown your rental car.

[Speaker 2]
Don't hurt your rental car. You need it.

[Speaker 1]
Feed it good food. Make it happy with yoga every day. Don't do stupid things that will hurt your body like these guys fly on these kites.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. These guys in the ocean, they are flying ... Very stupid.

Don't hurt your rental car. You don't get another one in this life. Don't do stupid things that hurt your rental car.

Feed it good food. Feed it good yoga. Take some walks.

[Speaker 2]
Enjoy nature.

[Speaker 1]
Don't put it in front of internet for three, four hours. Internet make you unhappy. A little bit is okay, but don't sit in front of computer for three, four hours.

It won't make you happy. Suddenly you will be old. Oh, what happened?

[Speaker 2]
What happened?

[Speaker 1]
I waste my whole life on stupid internet. Watching stupid little videos. Little bit stupid video every day is relaxing.

Okay, then it's enough. So, I'm not saying you're a bad person if you watch internet. Watch a little bit.

The best one.

[Speaker 2]
Then close it, put it away.

[Speaker 1]
Have a real life. I was in ... Where was I?

Shanghai. I told you this story many times. I was trying to learn Chinese language with my Chinese language teacher.

Then we went to coffee shop. They're trying to teach you about Tang Zhao, Han Zhao, you know, all the dynasties. I can't remember more than two.

[Speaker 2]
Ming Zhao.

[Speaker 1]
Then I remember it was like Starbucks or something. And four young ladies came in. You know, of course I'm watching all the people.

I'm not listening to my teacher much. That's why my Chinese is so bad. Sometimes I speak Chinese to somebody, Chinese friend.

[Speaker 2]
They go like this.

[Speaker 1]
Then they go like this. Oh, you speak in Chinese. Then these four young ladies sit down.

Each order some tea. Then they are ... Then they start like this.

Then my class is over one hour long. And those four young ladies, they are doing this the whole time. They are not even looking at each other.

I get a little bit upset. Young people, they don't know anything.

[Speaker 2]
Waste time.

[Speaker 1]
Don't talk to each other. Then finally I can't stand it. Then I asked the teacher, did you see those four ladies?

She said, no, I was teaching you. Then I said, yeah, but they've been here for over one hour. They are just texting, watching internet.

I'm so curious, why they come together to the coffee shop if they're not going to look at each other and they're not going to talk to each other? Then teacher said, I don't know, that's not Tang Dynasty, Ming Dynasty. Then I said, is it impolite if I ask them, why did you come to coffee shop together if you're not going to talk to each other?

[Speaker 2]
Did she say that?

[Speaker 1]
Then she said, in China, this is very impolite. But you're American. They are all impolite.

So, you can ask. Then I said, okay, I will ask you. Then I went to the table, we are leaving the coffee shop.

Then I said, by the way, I'm just curious, why you come to the coffee shop together if you're not going to look at each other and you're not going to talk to each other? Then the one girl is like, bad translator. Then I asked the teacher, what did they say?

[Speaker 2]
She said, we are texting each other.

[Speaker 1]
Cannot talk. Have to text each other. Okay, so please don't do that.

Little bit is okay. Watch a little video, I don't know, maybe, I don't know, something fun. I like to watch surfing videos or rock and roll videos.

And then after that, close it. It will hurt your meditation to look at all the stupid news. What did Obama have for lunch?

What bad thing did Trump say today? Relax. Don't worry about it.

You will forget it after two days. Tell me what Trump said last week, you can't remember. Let it go.

Look a little bit. It's important to know what's happening in the world. You can find it out in three minutes.

[Speaker 2]
Then put it down. It will hurt your meditation.

[Speaker 1]
Okay, little bit is okay. Internet is amazing. We can see this teaching on the internet.

[Speaker 2]
But don't waste your whole life on it.

[Speaker 1]
When you get older, you will regret you lost your life.

[Speaker 2]
Okay?

[Speaker 1]
You lost all your time. Okay? Alright.

So, try to do the whole meditation in the ...

[Speaker 2]
If you can build up to 40 minutes in two or three months, that's best.

[Speaker 1]
If you can't, then do 10 minutes today, 10 minutes tomorrow, like that.

[Speaker 2]
Okay, let's do a little bit of the book and then we'll take a break.

[Speaker 1]
So, we were talking about compassion of the Buddha. It goes to everybody. Not just their friends.

Not just their own children. Not just their own country's people. Their compassion is equal to everybody.

Now we reached another part. Cappuccino break. I want to take home the hotel people to stay in my house.

[Speaker 2]
Cappuccino.

[Speaker 1]
Make my bed. I'd like to thank Jasmine again. Where are you?

Beautiful place. Thank you. In the sutra, they say in the heaven there are many beautiful ponds and all those deities are eating cappuccino, having cappuccino and croissant outside under the umbrellas.

Looks just like that here. Thank you Jasmine and Tim. Also, it was a wonderful fire last night and it's so much work to do it and we are lucky to have fire master with us, and I'd like to thank Venerable Chunzong.

[Speaker 2]
Very nice.

[Speaker 1]
Okay. DE DAG LA SGON TE RGYAL NABS CHAGS CHUB PA LAS BSKYANG DRO BA DE DAG THAMS CAD NI KHYAD MED NYON MO RNAMS KYIS CING KHYOD NI DRO BA'I NYON MO DRAG DROD LAS YOD NI THUGS BYED DTAM Then he's singing a song to Buddha. People in the world are chained by their negative thoughts.

[Speaker 2]
Equally.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? If you live in this world the worst person in this world and the best person in this world are about one percent different. Okay?

The reason we have to live in this world the reason we came to this world the reason we were born in this world is we had some many negative seeds. So, the best person in this world the best person you met in this world and the worst person you met in this world they're almost the same. All of us have negative thoughts unless you are a secret Buddha.

There are some secret Buddhas, okay? So, we are all like people, police put the handcuffs on them. These are our jealousy anger you know, all of us have it.

Therefore we should love everybody equally. Everybody has the same number of problems. Okay?

As you get older like me you will understand everybody has problems. Big people small people rich people poor people American people Chinese people German people everybody's having problems. You are not having more problems than the person sitting next to you.

You just think you do.

[Speaker 2]
You just think you have.

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, you just think so.

[Speaker 2]
We are all equal.

[Speaker 1]
Then Buddhas are also equal.

[Speaker 2]
They are also chained. How? By love.

[Speaker 1]
Oh, I can't get rid of this love. What kind of love? For everybody who has chains.

[Speaker 2]
They also have chains.

[Speaker 1]
They have to love all of the people who have chains.

[Speaker 2]
Understand? It's a very cool poem.

[Speaker 1]
That's something I like about China a lot. You have so much poetry in China. Five thousand years.

In America we just have rap songs for a hundred years. We are like the kid you are like the grandfather. Then Buddha, you look into the jail where it is dark inside and you just feel compassion for us.

Thank you for that. We're going to take a break in about five minutes and Michael is going to Michael, Melissa, be ready. Nick, be ready.

Okay. Now we start a new part. Talking about amazing way that the Buddha mind acts in the world, the amazing way that the Buddha speech acts in the world, and the amazing way that the Buddha actions act in the world.

And the Lama used the ancient book called Uttaratantra and as I said yesterday, this is spoken by Maitreya which is the next Buddha to come in this world. It's also one of the most famous books of the Maitreya mind only school. Someday we can study it.

Very popular in China. SHI BA DRIN LAS KYI YON TAN NI RGYUD LA MA LAS By the way, it's not a tantra, it's not a secret teaching. Just the name is tantra.

In Sanskrit tantra means like a long stream. Then in this four lines two lines of Sanskrit four lines together Maitreya describes how does the Buddha act spontaneously without thinking. Like when you stand in front of a mirror your face will come there.

[Speaker 2]
You don't have to ask the mirror, please show my face.

[Speaker 1]
Nine famous examples and we are going to learn them here. I will do two and then we'll take a break. RGYAL CHEN SNGA BRTAN TZAM PA DANG NYI MA NO BU RIN CHEN BZHIN DE BZHIN SHES PA BRA GNYEN BZHIN RNAMS KA DANG NI SA BZHIN NO SHES PA'I DGU'I DGOS NAS BSTAN PA LTAR BSAM LA Then you can even do a meditation on these nine examples.

First one is about Gyalchen. Gyalchen in Sanskrit language is shakra, shakra. It's like temporary deity.

These are not Buddhas. They are people who meditated a lot in their past life. Like just breath meditation for twenty years.

Because of their karma they become very powerful like God for a short time. Then they go to hell. So, we don't want to do that.

Don't waste whole time, whole life watching Vipassana to watch your breath for three years or something. It will not liberate your mind. It makes you very calm.

A little bit too calm. Okay? Alright, then the karma is that you are born as this big powerful deity for a short time.

So, there's a god who lives in a temporary heaven. His name is shakra. And in that heaven the ground is made of lapis lazuli blue stone.

And I think they also have some people from the Hilton there. They are cleaning the stone every day. And it's very shiny like Geshe Michael's top of head.

Then if those shakra look down he can see his reflection in the floor. Then other smaller gods they will walk into the shakra's apartment they can see many shakras on the floor, reflections. Then they feel like oh, that's cool.

He looks very handsome. I wish I could be like that. Then this is an example for Buddha.

Okay? Buddhas are so powerful that if our mind is clean like cleaned by Hilton's staff we can see Buddhas. Reflection in our own heart automatically like a mirror.

[Speaker 2]
Okay?

[Speaker 1]
Buddha doesn't have to say oh, today I would like to be in Bin William's heart. Buddha doesn't have to plan when Bin William's heart is clean and happy and calm then Buddha's reflection will go there automatically. So this is showing to this example of a mirror is showing two things.

Number one Buddha's action in the world is automatic. Buddha doesn't have to wake up check Buddha's iPhone 9.32 in Thailand I have appointment in Bin William's heart doesn't need it's automatic.

[Speaker 2]
When Bin is feeling devotion then Buddha has to show in his heart like a mirror doesn't have choice.

[Speaker 1]
It's like a lake if there's no wind and you look down you can see your reflection.

[Speaker 2]
If there's a wind the water is too shaky you cannot see.

[Speaker 1]
If you are meditating every day 10 minutes, 20, 40 minutes your heart will be calm enough to mirror the Buddha's image. And during that day maybe in the elevator at work maybe on the subway or the bus you will see, we call suspicious person. In the airport they make announcement if you see suspicious person please tell the security.

If we see someone put a suitcase then run out the airport we should tell the police. But if you meditate in the morning and your heart is calm like a mirror then during the day you will meet some suspicious people.

[Speaker 2]
Suspicious. Maybe Buddha I think.

[Speaker 1]
Secret Buddha. Very suspicious.

[Speaker 2]
Always smiling. Always happy.

[Speaker 1]
Always nice to other people. I think I have to call the Dharma police. Suspicious person over here.

I think maybe Buddha. If your mind is calm the Buddha can show.

[Speaker 2]
Buddha will show.

[Speaker 1]
We have about a half hour we will try to finish these 9 metaphors taught by Maitreya. The first one we talk about the floor of the heaven which is shining and the main deity their reflection shows in the floor and we said it means that your own heart is peaceful and then Buddha's image can reflect there. The second part of that metaphor when the little gods see the big gods beautiful reflection in the floor they think I would like to make the karma to be like him.

So, when we are very peaceful and the Buddha's image first two bodies can show in the mirror of our heart then we say I like to be like that what seed do I have to make to be like that? So, that's the first metaphor of the nine it's called the floor of heaven second one sum juk tsa sum gyi la yu du la nam kyi sun nam le drub pa nga wo che shuk chang she jawa So, on top of you know, when we do this mandala offering these two middle fingers represents the highest mountain in the world then these these four connections here they are the four major continents of the world like Asia Europe North America, South America ok

[Speaker 2]

in Buddhism in the old Buddhism geography then on top of this mountain there is a small heaven worldly heaven and there are 33 famous small gods there not Buddha and because of their good karma there is a special drum that exists in that place and it will play without anybody beating it it will play by itself in yoga we have similar word the name for heart chakra in Sanskrit is anahata so hata means beat the word ahimsa comes from that ahimsa then ah means very much so ahata means beat very much then an means not so sometimes we call the heart the drum which beats with no one hitting it then in this small heaven temporary heaven there is also a drum there which plays by itself and what music does it play? we call the four principles of the Dharma very famous if a book has these four principles it is worth reading it will bring you ultimate happiness if the book does not have those four principles then it will not help you in an ultimate way so sometimes these four are called the four seals of a helpful book which can help you a book which can help you the four principles first one du je tam je mi dakpa all things which have a cause will also die second one sak je tam je du nge wa anything a person does without the four steps sooner or later it will cause them suffering chu tam je tong shing dak me pa nothing is coming from its own side nyang nge ne de pa shi wa o if you understand this you can reach nirvana what is the definition of nirvana? Nick, that is your specialty nyun drip ma lupar pangpe nyi so sor tang go it means you can stop your negative emotions because you understand emptiness what is an example? phantom husband why?

if he calls you stupid and if you understand that is coming from the seeds you planted when you got angry at your two kids last week then automatically dependent origination dependent origination husband really coming from what I said to my kids last week emptiness there is no other husband in the room only the one which comes from me if you look for a husband in your house which didn't come from you you will not find anything and that's kong shing and if you understand that then you won't give bad answer to your husband no, I am not phantom you are phantom if you say again to the husband no, you are phantom I am not phantom you will plant another bad seed then next week he will call you phantom again again, how many times in your life do you have to see this circle before you stop it when will you learn enough to stop giving answer oh, that's coming from me that's my fault if you understand that you will not stop in the kitchen to call your husband you are phantom you will go continue through the kitchen to the toilet look in the mirror you are phantom understand you planted seed last week oh, so stupid ok, got it so, this drum in the heaven is talking this talk which I just talk the drum is talking that talk all the time automatically it's making it's not making you know, rock and roll it's talking Dharma because of their good karma if you have good karma then you can even learn Dharma from rock and roll even from rap song I should have known you was trouble from the start giving me a broken heart you know you can learn some Dharma even from that so, Buddha is like that drum Buddha doesn't think oh, I have to rush to the ballroom Buddha doesn't think oh, I have to rush to the ballroom I have to teach at 8 o'clock so, not like that all the time they are teaching spontaneously without we say in English it means without pre-meditation it means without thinking before some kind of plan to talk if other person has good seeds then Buddha will come automatically and teach Dharma to them could be at the beach the sound of the ocean Buddha is very much like to go into the bodies of small kids and teach Dharma to the parents when you have small baby if you have good karma they will teach you for the next 50 years then my friend brought Winston, the guy who started Diamond Mountain when he had his first baby he brought it to the class I was walking in, I was in a rush and he said Geshe-la, look at my new baby then we are looking at the baby very beautiful both of us are looking at the baby then baby went like this you want to go to Buddha paradise? wow so that will be automatic people ask me Geshe-la should I have children or not that's up to you but if you meditate and if you have good seeds that child will be your Buddha they will teach you but you have to listen third metaphor so the first metaphor that was a metaphor for the Buddha's body that reflection in the floor what was the second metaphor for Buddha's speech now Buddha's mind it's like Maitreya said like a cloud it means a cloud will rain and the Buddha's disciple, us we are like the rice or the other crops when the Buddha rains we can grow if Jasmine or Tim or Michael and Melissa organize some program if we come the rain will fall on us and we can grow so Buddha is also like a cloud and we are like the crops and that's the activity of Buddha's mind now in this lam rim the teacher stopped there really only did two and a half of the metaphor so I really enjoy to go to the original book and it was written 17 centuries ago and I want to know what's the other six metaphors so I went and got them for you and there is a beautiful yeah there is a very beautiful explanation by great Lama name from the greatest monastery Serame Serame monastery has two parts Me and Je the best one is Me now you are also belong to Serame if you study with me then you belong to Serame then when people talk about the other part of Sera Seraje yeah they are pretty good not bad sometimes they say good stuff ok, you have to have a little loyalty to Serame just kidding ok it's a bad habit to be jealous of other buddhist groups they are all cool ok equal cool almost just kidding ok so here is the explanation by Serame he lived about 500 years ago I'll start and then we'll continue in the afternoon then I like his explanation because in the beginning by the way if you are if you want to know where it's from if you want to know where it's from it's from his commentary to Abhisamaya Alankara ok yeah then he said when you think about how Buddha acts in the world there are three beautiful qualities number one Buddha doesn't need to make a plan in English we say no premeditation he doesn't have to say like me and the other ACI teachers this last month we are all going crazy to prepare for our classes for you especially on the airplane Scott, Ori, me they are all like I'll show you halfway through the flight from America Nick is like this Ori is like this John and Connie Scott then blue color coming from their computer fingers still like that then I took photo then the stewardess told me that's not very nice I said it's ok, he's my friend ok, so Buddha's three qualities number dopa medpa doesn't have to make a plan not like me and the other ACI teachers number two Buddha's activity in our world never stops maybe you when we are asleep when we are having lunch when we are doing yoga we are on the airplane Buddha never stops anywhere you go any time of day in your room in the airport at the beach Buddha is trying to contact you he put Buddha spy is on the beach there are Buddha spies in the airport maybe your child is a Buddha spy they never stop they are always trying to contact you if you go on the balcony late at night of your hotel room and nobody is awake then Buddha will move the trees to talk to you oh by the way some people ask me Geshe-la this retreat seems very expensive Geshe-la this retreat seems very expensive my answer is Hilton so we chose a nice hotel we thought maybe you could have vacation we can do a cheaper hotel I did in Mexico one time cheap hotel everybody got sick including me I was giving talk then suddenly I told Daniel we have to go now then he pushed me out the door when he pushed me looks like star so we chose a hotel where you can enjoy and for many of us it's expensive I think Dharma teaching expenses should be transparent should be public so you can check it how did we spend the money nobody is making any money teachers are broke happily broke then you can what I like to do Tim and Jasmine agree by January 15 we will put the budget online you can see how we spent the money if you have suggestion how to save money next year we are very happy but when you do Dharma program you should also publish the budget to cheat people with Dharma money it's a very serious bad karma so it's good to be responsible be careful with the money and show everybody the accounts then people can say you spend too much money on Geshe Michael's cappuccino maybe next time he can drink mint tea so we will publish the budget if you have suggestion how we can save money next time we are happy to do but in these programs there is no charge for teaching teachers are not making money it should be like that so second quality Buddha is teaching all the time if your heart is open you will hear teaching all day all night like 24 hour McDonald's all day all night 24 hours third quality it's called shung gi drupa it just happens like magic because of the good karma of the student because of the good seeds of the student it will just happen shung gi drupa shung gi drupa it just happens you can plan Dharma program in Thailand for six months you can plan you can make a plan for six months Dharma program in Thailand and if the student and teacher don't have good seeds for example it will rain on the fire offering it doesn't matter how much you plan and if the student and the teacher have good seeds something beautiful will happen that's called shung gi drupa that's the third quality shung gi drupa then he gives those nine, he gives the original uttara tantra verse he quotes the verse then he explains it and each of the nine metaphors has a separate verse in the uttara tantra so in the lam rim they didn't put those so ketu tenpa dargye he went and got them for you so here's his explanation we will start again from number one we will start again from the first metaphor then he explains the verse so in heaven the floor is made of lapis lazuli and the image of the king of the gods appears in that floor without effort without premeditation the image of the two physical bodies of the buddha will show in the mind of the student if the student's mind is pure ok, second one which is the drum the original text jita sanam sanam la ngun gyi karpo tu yin ni be dang ne dang yin su dang nangpa tokpa me shi dang mi ta dung yin dang me dang shiway dra yin pa me pe hla nam tam je yang ne yang chuk gi nge ni ku je tar de shin khyab dak be so dang cha yang drangwa ma nyu pa sang gyur sung gi khyab dzin te kyang den nam la chu tun no this is the explanation of the drum in the heaven of the 33 little gods hla nam kyi gyeway le kyi because of the good seeds in the hearts of those gods be tul me pa nobody has to work che ken gyi che pa this is difficult che means tongue gen means the top of the mouth then there is no tongue and top of the mouth effort buddha doesn't have to say sounds just open mouth come out some beautiful teaching even without touching the tongue and the top of the mouth yi dang suk dang that drumming of the drum comes without any thinking during the drumming and there is no drum stick nam tok me pa and no one is thinking oh it's 6 o'clock we should hit the drum just the drum sings those four dharma principles buddha is like that no effort no physical contact no premeditation buddha teaching comes to us through the trees through our children through the ocean through our phantom husband dharma will come this is all buddha acting in the world when people hurt you it's very possible this is a buddha's activity so be careful personally in my life personally in my life I learn more from my mistakes and from the bad things that happen to me than from the teachings third one here is the original verse ji tar yak gi tun na kyen lo tok pun tsok sok pay gyu chu yul pongpo be mey pa sa la kyun du mey pa tar de shin thuk chak tin le ni gyel way dam chu chu yi char droway gyeway lo tok gyu nam par tokpa mey pa meyp this is a verse here is the explanation ya du su in the summer time nam ka le from the sky comes the rain lo tok pun tsok pay gyu it helps the crops to grow strong pay tu mey pa here is the cool part the cloud doesn't think oh it's 6 o'clock I should drop some rain on the rice no plan all the causes are ready then the rain will fall the cloud doesn't have intention oh I should drop rain now then the rain will fall then because the Buddha has love for us droway gyeway lo tok yi chir du in order to grow good seeds in the disciples of the Buddha Buddha will Buddha's cloud means Buddha's heart chir char be mey without any effort it will drop the rain of the Dharma to us and that's a very common metaphor in Buddhism teachers like a cloud like a cloud we are like the crops cloud will send the rain down cloud will send the rain down without planning just come down and that's a Dharma if we hear Dharma our heart can grow so that's the third metaphor we have six more this afternoon thank you very much thank you
