[Говорящий 2] (0:00 - 32:12) Please relax the corners of your mouth. Pull in your tummy a little bit. And keep it there. Consciously relax your shoulders. Relax your fingers. And please come to your breath. Start watching. And please invite a teacher who is dear to you to come and sit in front of you. It could be a grade school teacher who helped you a lot. It could be your mom and dad. It could be a spiritual teacher. It could be a partner or a child who has taught you love. Someone that you admire in some way. And please think of one quality that you admire about them. And mentally bow down to it. And think of something you'd like to confess to them. Some negative thing you did in the last day or two. And make them an offering of something good you've done in the last day or two. And ask them to keep teaching you. If they're already gone from your life, ask that you can remember what they taught you. That the blessing of that continues in your life. And ask that they stay in your life. All you teachers stay in your life. Teachers are teaching nice things and teachers are challenging your patience. And again, please look at your teacher's forehead. Lower part of the forehead. See a soft white light there. Which represents how they act towards other people. The things they do for other people. And just gaze on that soft white light. Sunken into their head. Forehead. Like a diamond. And see a corresponding light in your own forehead. Feel it. Deep inside your forehead, about an inch. Inside your forehead, about an inch above the spot between the eyebrows. The light of the teacher's forehead is touching the... is, sorry, is setting off a light in your own forehead. And you might experiment with turning your eyes up in your... with your eyes closed, turn your eyeballs up to softly gaze at that white light. Not very strongly, but just gently, softly. Turn your eyes up. And focus at that spot. Don't hurt your eyes. Now see a red jewel in the hollow of your teacher's throat. Sunken deep into the throat, towards the spine. And it's giving off a deep red light, beautiful, soft, deep red light, sparkling, glinting. And then a corresponding light in your ulcer. Deep red. And that's coming from the teacher's mind. And it will bless you to speak with kindness. Truth. Sapphire. Touching teacher's heart, behind their heart. Deep blue color. Warm light. Gentle light. This is their thought. Calm, peaceful, clear. Kind. And that causes a corresponding light in your chest, behind your heart. Deep blue, soft, glowing, sapphire light. And the way they think is spread to your own heart. And they lean into those two beams of light merging. And the jewels touch. Diamond touches a diamond light. Ruby touches a ruby light. Sapphire touches a sapphire light. And they are merging into you. The whole strength of their, the way they talk and the way they think, the way they act is being pushed into you. And their body turns around and sits like yours. Just under your skin. If you could feel away the skin, you would find the teacher. Their jewels are melding together. And just sit and enjoy it. Being as good as your teacher is. Kind and sweet. Just enjoy it. Be happy. Imagine that you'll spend the whole day more acting like them. And please come back to your breath. Don't let your focus. Slowly come back. Do not stretch questions. Comments. I know that there's a meditation called gross dhalma. So what's the kind of correlation to gross dhalma? Gross dhalma? [Говорящий 1] (32:14 - 32:53) What do you think? So generally they say that the karmic cause of silence in your mind, the quiet in your mind when you meditate is clear. Clear quiet in your mind. Clear engaged quiet in your mind is to lead an ethical life, to keep the ten virtues. Just encompassing that. So Katie's question is, what's the corresponding seed for just being really sleepy or dull in your mind? She said gross dhalma. [Говорящий 2] (32:54 - 33:16) Not subtle dhalma. Any idea? Not paying enough attention to other people's needs. Not paying enough attention to other people's needs. Is there a way to make other people dull? It's being exhausted. [Говорящий 1] (33:18 - 33:24) It's being exhausted. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mikey, what's an example? [Говорящий 2] (33:27 - 33:48) We were just talking about digging at someone's mind. You know, like talking to them and not giving them space. You know, like continuing to ask questions. That might be nice. Or giving them alcohol, would be another one. Or taking them to a party. Yeah. [Говорящий 1] (33:48 - 34:28) Yeah. Is there... I would say also being dull to people. Like making their lives dull. I always think that Scott's really good at like he goes to a store or something and he'll engage the staff or he'll talk to them and try to joke around with them or make their life a little more interesting. People have dull jobs. You know, like standing all day checking people out of the store and things like that. So at least maybe you can try to make their life a little happier. [Говорящий 2] (34:31 - 34:57) I think playing music is a good way to make people's lives a little more interesting. There's one point that you just kind of said that in the time of love but if you spend a lot of time advocating for the possibilities but too much of it might not seem like it but actually it makes their lives look dull. [Говорящий 1] (35:04 - 35:18) I think make people's lives more interesting, especially either when you encounter someone in a service job who's supposed to serve you in a store or something. Like try to make their life more fun. [Говорящий 2] (35:24 - 35:47) Sorry, I'm not wearing my glasses. Yeah, I know that. They're on your head. I'm trying to see without them and I'm curious what is the correlation to their eyesight? [Говорящий 1] (35:50 - 37:25) I think you could get metaphorical on this. I think you can say, and I've had people ask me that and they improve their eyesight and I think it's sharing wisdom with other people, sharing knowledge with other people and then your own lives will change. You can also like we sent we worked with the Lions Club and we sent boxes of eyeglasses to refugees and we sent a couple big shipments of eyeglasses to Sarah and it was cute because you know these huge boxes with the Lions Club, they helped us collect them in different cities in the US and they got huge boxes and then monks were just trying them on and I thought how crude, you know something's wrong with that but that's what the doctor does he just puts things there until you see clearly it's really the same thing so send a couple hundred of random pairs of glasses and let the refugees try them on until they find one that works it's the same thing then they found out that if you put one over the other it works better so they would tie two pairs of glasses on their head these lamas would be tying two pairs of glasses on their head it's not very attractive especially if they're ladies glasses and [Говорящий 2] (37:28 - 37:28) so [Говорящий 1] (37:28 - 39:40) you could do that but I think here in this case a metaphorical kind of helping people see is enough and your eyes will stay good my eyes are still good I think they're getting worse but you know I'm ancient so I think if you dedicate, always you have to dedicate the karma to your eyes and then think you're going to do something good with it like a Sanskrit project or something people I think that's a big part too part is the cause you know that you are hoping to help other people see but part is how you dedicate the karma how you take care of the seed after you plant the seed and that's coffee meditation so I keep going back to coffee meditation or call mama chicken on the egg but I think it's equal weight you have to do good deeds but you also have to appreciate yourself if you don't appreciate yourself enough the good deeds don't grow, they sort of just vegetate I planted some, I don't like garlics and onions but I was somebody told me to plant them so I planted them do you know how you plant an onion? It's interesting, a garlic you just bury one it's not very sophisticated and the ones I have they took two years to come up they come up a little bit but not much and then they come up and the onion flower is like a dandelion, it looks like a dandelion and each little filament is another onion and it's kind of beautiful, one stem looks like a dandelion or what are those yellow ones? from a bug anyway [Говорящий 2] (39:42 - 39:45) yellow anyway [Говорящий 1] (39:47 - 43:44) anyway you have to so they'll sit there underground for a long time if you don't do anything they need iron and they need water and they need sunlight and if you don't feed them I've experienced myself a garlic will sit there for two years and nothing will happen it won't grow and it will just sit there same with an onion or something like that and if you water them correctly don't overwater them and put them in make sure their sunlight gets to them and put some iron there like that then they will grow faster so I think a lot of people when they I like that you have a little project a karmic project it's like a karmic experiment you want to see if it's going to work or not so you say I'm going to try to fix my eyesight with karma and then that's a very good thing to do I think a lot of people don't do those experiments like they come to class and they listen but then they don't try anything so you got to have some little what do you call it, bake a cake you have to try one of your own little karma experiments so I think eyesight is a good one and then I think a lot of people don't get to the experiment they just come to class and they even they go to DCI tours and they teach other people how to get their dreams but they don't think to do their own so to think to have to think to use these things on your own is a step forward and then it takes a little bit more effort to do something like to share I don't know to save Sanskrit books for example to share wisdom with other people but then the third step which is even more rare so there's like four steps people who listen to the teachings but don't have a little experiment on themselves and then people who listen and try something on themselves you know and then you have to take care of the seed you have to, what do you call it sit on the egg or nothing happens nothing will happen the seed can sit there for a million years it's like an onion or garlic underground, it will just sit there for a couple years it won't grow and so I think you have to put some effort into it I think most of us if we do get to the point of trying an experiment like you're doing and that's really good an eyesight experiment or somebody's doing a girlfriend experiment I had a lady in Shanghai she did a give birth experiment I told you right she's 40 something and she said the doctor told her she'll never have a baby and she wanted to have a baby so she did an experiment four years ago the kid's two years old now there's a nice photo of the baby on the stage so she people undertake experiments and then they do they plant seeds but then they don't do the last step which is take care of the seed before you sleep appreciate yourself it's equivalent to appreciating yourself okay so think about that I say like 80% of people fail on the last step they don't appreciate what they're doing and then so the seed just sits there cool I think work on the last step the other steps will come yes madame [Говорящий 2] (43:44 - 43:56) it's really fast what happens if you choose a girlfriend for a certain project and you don't seem really excited about the whole thing around you and they're just like oh yeah [Говорящий 1] (43:56 - 46:23) use the four steps on them which means you show more gratitude to people who are helping you then they'll change you see everything can be adjusted by fixing something in yourself so they're not you know get more excited about people who are helping you or trying to help you be more responsive and be more grateful and then they will change that person will change it's a I don't know how to get you to feel it but it's a very exciting approach that you can have anything you want in your life you can change anyone around you by making minor adjustments in yourself and when I have trouble conveying or when I feel like I haven't got people to appreciate that's a fun process it's a very happy process because you're fixing something inside yourself so you're out of right away you're happier and your life is better and there's no tension and there's no negotiation and there's no discussion and there's no pushing the other person like all problems with other people can be solved without tension or talking to them at all which is really nice and you just if your immediate reaction to a problem with someone is to investigate yourself to see if you're doing something similar then your life just improves constantly it's just happier every day every day something goes better and there's no tension you don't have to interact with or express that you're having problems you can change them without meeting them and then you can meet them later after they're changed but the process of changing yourself to change them is just really happy and pleasant and fun if you get in the habit most people avoid admitting their weaknesses but if you get in the habit of treating them so that other people will change if you get into the habit of digging out your own weaknesses or addictions or compulsive behavior [Говорящий 2] (46:23 - 46:24) or you know [Говорящий 1] (46:24 - 47:26) then if it becomes what do you call it instinctual right, reflexive if it's automatic that when you have a problem with somebody you look inside yourself for the same thing then you're just on a constant upward track and then a lot of us we avoid our negative, we don't want to talk about our weaknesses and we don't want to think about them and then you can't change and then nobody around you changes so when you start getting into the habit of automatic auto what do you call it, auto-correction then it just starts this different way of life for you you're more honest about your weaknesses, you're more sensitive to other people and the karma shifts strongly and quickly and you're much happier very fast and that's called humaneness the essence of human [Говорящий 2] (47:26 - 48:26) so when you were talking about the morality and you don't apply the morality with an understanding of emptiness then it's immorality and the discussion we went through when we were talking about the application of the three spheres and understanding that many activists in these spheres are not coming from separacy if I've heard that correctly that understanding of emptiness is number three or four so the question is that if your understanding of emptiness is not the other level is it somehow more moral than the one previous and if you're working with that understanding how do you then move to for me it's not entirely clear how to move from there to a higher level [Говорящий 1] (48:28 - 52:08) so we talk about six kinds of emptiness right, and they represent what emptiness means to the four great schools of ancient India and so the text we're studying is the highest worldview it must be number six Rastatami Kirti was one of the most famous proponents of worldview number six which is that everything is coming 100% from seeds in my mind and anything that doesn't work that way doesn't exist and that's emptiness then there's a lower presentation in that list of six that Tim's referring to mind only presentation that says when I get into a problem with somebody I don't know, I'm having trouble with my partner, I'm having trouble with my boss or somebody at work or somebody in my family then I'm supposed to be aware of the three spheres which means I'm supposed to be aware that the person who's hurting me is coming from a seed in my mind that I'm also coming from a seed in my mind and that the fact that we met each other today at three o'clock or that I got hired by that company and I met that person is not an accident that's also coming from a seed that I planted and the radical thing is that all three things, all three spheres the person, me, who entered the office, the person who turns out to be my... I answered an ad and I got hired by them so I created them I created me and I created the hiring so that they could abuse me six months later. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, the first week everyone's happy I got the job, I got the job and then six months later they're like I hate this job. And what Tim's talking about is that it's believed that they all come from one karmic seed splits into three, like the branches of a tree. So, we're supposed to when we have a problem with somebody, we're supposed to stay aware that they are a branch of the same trunk that I planted from one karmic seed split into me, them, and our interaction in the way that two branches are hitting each other on a tree. You see what I mean? They're both the same tree. They both came from the same seed, karmically. So, Tim's saying in the text we just were reading, they make a big deal about the three spheres and they say that a bodhisattva who stays aware of them when they are patient with the boss that they created with the one seed, with this knowledge, that's a special kind of patience which can only get stronger the worse things get. The worse things get, the more they reflect on how they planted the seed and then they're careful not to plant another seed. So, bodhisattva morality gets stronger the more it's pushed, the harder the situation gets. Their morality gets stronger. Their patience gets stronger. There must be some analogy in the world. Think about it. Something that the more you push it, the stronger it gets. Like a muscle, I guess. We have to think of some analogies. [Говорящий 2] (52:13 - 52:14) Yes, that's true. [Говорящий 1] (52:17 - 59:10) So his question is, if that's the case and if that book that we've been studying is highest viewpoint, highest Madhyamika, then what's wrong with the... He's at the third, I think, of the six kinds of emptiness, which is describing that. And that's supposed to be a lower school. Right? So why is that a lower school if it's coming up in the highest school's book as the reason why a bodhisattva's patience is unbreakable, right? Because they understand this thing about the tree. And I also have this problem big time in my studies in the monastery. It used to really bother me. And you're not supposed to ask questions in the class. It's very frustrating. In a real old-time Tibetan Buddhist class with an old-time lama, you're not supposed to make a peep. The whole Geshe course, you're supposed to look attentive. If they ask you a question, you're supposed to answer immediately or you get hit. But if they don't ask you a question, you're not allowed to interrupt them. It's a very strict system. Very, very strict. And then one day I just couldn't stand it anymore. The only time I interrupted my teacher, Geshe teacher, and I said, I got to ask you a question. He's like, you know what I mean? Something really bugs me. He's like, what? This mind-only school thing sounds good to me. I don't see why it's less than number six. It sounds perfect to me. And then he went off on a very beautiful thing. He said, generally speaking, it's perfect. It's number six. Number three, I guess it's number three, I don't know, is number six. But, and then there's a but, the mind-only school says that the boss which is created from the trunk of the tree has some independent existence of its own in the form of atoms that have a unique nature. So that's very close to a scientist's perception of the world. So scientists believe that in the atomic periodic chart, they believe in, I don't know how many elements there are up to, 130 or something. The word element means indivisible substance. It's a, it has its own identity. A carbon has a certain identity and it's different from oxygen and it's different from nitrogen and uranium. They all have fluoride. They have their own unique qualities inside them. So they are elements, meaning if you broke that molecule in half, there wouldn't be anything. There'd be no qualities. That molecule, that structure of electrons and protons and neutrons has a unique identity. Oxygen has a certain characteristics and they're different from the characteristics of nitrogen. And you can't, if you break that molecule, there's no characteristics. They believe that. And that's called du-chen-cha-me. Say du-chen. Cha-me. Du means particle of dust. Du-chen means subatomic particle. Cha-me means partless. Partless subatomic particles. So the mind-only school believes that after the split occurs, inside the boss are particles with their own identity, which is inherent to them and is not coming from my mind. So I guess they're not part of a tree. The pieces of my boss that make them who they are, are unique atomic particles that can no longer be divided. If they are divided they lose their oxygen-ness or their carbon-ness. They still believe in du-chen-cha-me. If you took away that, which is to say they're self-existent, you see? In Buddhism, to say that a particle will always behave the same way. It's what you're saying. It has its own unique... Oxygen will always behave the same way. Put those protons, neutrons, electrons together in a certain configuration, they will always behave the same way as oxygen. And Buddhism says no. Buddhism says they could vary. They could switch if my karma was different. And now you have physicists making very interesting observations, right? Heisenberg? Uncertainty principle. One particle, two particles of the same element can behave differently in a refraction grid. Light can move in waves and the same light can move in particles, direct particles, rays. Waves and rays at the same time. Impossible. We don't know how the light from the sun gets to the earth. If one particle behaves in two contradictory ways at the same time. And it can be demonstrated with a refraction grid. So you've got to the place where there's no such thing as a du tren chamay. Oxygen will behave two different ways. The same atom, the same molecule will behave in two different ways. So it's not elemental. It doesn't have its own unique characteristic. Which implies that there's some outside force changing it. Which is? Your karma. So that's all. The mind-only school adds the part about elements. And if you took that away it would be viewpoint number six. So you're correct. It's a very beautiful question. It's the only time I interrupt the institution that I can remember. I stopped him in the middle of the sentence. I said, I can't stand it anymore. I have to ask him. And he gave a beautiful answer. Alright. We're over time. That's really unusual. We have a nice young class by Jen. And so you have about 10-15 minutes to get ready. Alright. Thank you.
