[Говорящий 1] (0:00 - 0:41) Okay, we'll start with the book again. We're on problem number three. It means if you break your relationship with your teacher, then even if you study Tantra, practice the higher teachings, nothing will happen. Well, something will happen, but we'll talk about it later. [Говорящий 2] (0:41 - 0:43) Something bad will happen. [Говорящий 1] (0:44 - 1:48) Then he's quoting... DGUS PA'I RTZA RGYUD means Guhyasamaja root Tantra. SEMS CAN THAMS MED LA SOGS PA'I Are we okay, Adam? SDIG PA CHEN PO'I PHYIR PA YANG Suppose you are a person who committed one of the five big negative karmas in Buddhism. These are called TZAM MED. Say it, TZAM MED. You guys know TZAM MED in the retreat, right? It means a border. But in ethics, TZAM MED means no border. If you do this terrible thing, there will be no border between this life and the hell. [Говорящий 2] (1:49 - 1:55) There will be no line that divides you from this life and hell. [Говорящий 1] (1:58 - 2:02) There's no gap span someplace else. You go directly to the lowest hell, TZAM MED. [Говорящий 2] (2:09 - 2:16) These are the five worst sins in Buddhism. [Говорящий 1] (2:16 - 2:24) Give them to me. Kill your father. Kill your mother. Kill an arhat. [Говорящий 2] (2:24 - 2:29) Kill someone who reached nirvana. [Говорящий 1] (2:30 - 2:38) Try to hurt a Buddha. Why do they say try? You can't do it, okay? [Говорящий 2] (2:38 - 2:40) But you want to. [Говорящий 1] (2:40 - 2:44) You try. Then the worst one, really. [Говорящий 2] (2:46 - 2:51) To split the spiritual community. [Говорящий 1] (2:53 - 3:47) To cause a spiritual community to split or break up into parts. This is the worst karma in this list that you can do. To try to kill a Buddha is an attack on the nirmanakaya, the physical body of a Buddha. When you split a Dharma group or you threaten to split a Dharma group, that's an attack on the essence of a Buddha. [Говорящий 2] (3:47 - 3:54) So it's more serious than attacking their physical body. [Говорящий 1] (3:55 - 7:08) Then it's very ... in Tibetan we say it's very close to us. We are in a spiritual community. Sangha. We are in a sangha. And in a sangha, I think because we are trying so hard to be good, sometimes we are very bad. And very, very common in a sangha, I don't know why, is jealousy. People start to feel jealous of each other. I don't know why. Actually, I do know why. I was jealous of my lama's other main student for twenty-five years, every day. Every day. Probably if I'm still living there, I will still be jealous, but I moved away. Sometimes you stop your negative emotion, because the person is living in a different state now. And you think you made some progress. Then if they came back tomorrow, you would be jealous again. I would be jealous again. So we have to be very, very careful. I think as a Buddhist, you have to learn not to trust your own mind. So, this new person comes to the group, and you feel, oh, they look kind of nice. They're kind of nice person. Then the lama starts to pay a lot of attention to them, give them nice jobs, and spend a lot of time with them. Then suddenly your mind will change. Oh, he's not a very nice person. Why is the lama like him so much? That person didn't change in the last week. They didn't suddenly become a bad person after not being a bad person for three months or four months. But you are jealous. [Говорящий 2] (7:10 - 7:18) You feel threatened. You want more attention from the teacher or other people. [Говорящий 1] (7:19 - 7:37) Then your mind starts to make up stories about this person. Actually, their socks are a little bit strange color. Before, you didn't even notice their socks, you know? [Говорящий 2] (7:40 - 7:49) So when your mind starts talking like that, tell your mind to shut up. [Говорящий 1] (7:49 - 8:05) A Buddhist person, you have to learn to tell your mind, oh, shut up. You're just jealous. I think it helps if you blame it on somebody else. Your mind is like another person. You're just jealous. [Говорящий 2] (8:13 - 8:16) Okay, so be careful. [Говорящий 1] (8:17 - 8:20) Because jealousy can lead to the breaking up of the group. [Говорящий 2] (8:28 - 8:35) And if you're responsible to break up a group, it's the worst karma. [Говорящий 1] (8:35 - 9:14) In Buddhism, in the five, it's the worst karma you can do. The jing, the scripture says this is a direct attack on the Buddha's body. Then I was lucky. I met my Tibetan teacher when I was still in college. So I was very young. And I lived with him for 25 years. [Говорящий 2] (9:15 - 9:19) I lived in his house for 25 years. [Говорящий 1] (9:19 - 9:52) So I saw many, many, many, many, many, many, many students. I watched, I saw everything. And I saw who succeeded and who failed. And the jealous people who try to hurt the other students, or the people who try to break up the sangha, terrible, terrible things happen to them. [Говорящий 2] (9:54 - 9:55) Suddenly they die. [Говорящий 1] (9:57 - 9:59) Or they get, they go paralyzed. [Говорящий 2] (9:59 - 10:02) They go crazy. [Говорящий 1] (10:02 - 10:04) I saw one lady, she... [Говорящий 2] (10:04 - 10:09) Today we climbed the mountain. [Говорящий 1] (10:09 - 10:35) We had to go under the wire fence. We call, in English we call barbed wire, barbed wire. Then one lady, I remember, she was trying to hurt the sangha. My teacher's sangha. [Говорящий 2] (10:35 - 10:38) I was just another student. [Говорящий 1] (10:39 - 11:19) Then she went to this fence, you know? And she grabbed it very hard like this. Then she went like this. You know? She went crazy. Then, I've seen it many, many times, with my own eyes. That karma is so strong that it will ripen quickly. So be very careful. You don't have to deal with bad people in the sangha, just avoid them. If you cannot make friends with them, then just avoid them, okay? [Говорящий 2] (11:24 - 11:27) Don't fight with them. [Говорящий 1] (11:29 - 12:46) Don't fight with them, just avoid them, okay? Then of course the teacher will make a project and put you together. We like that. We like to do that. So if you did one of those five bad deeds, kill your own father, kill your own mother. Kill someone who reached nirvana. How can you kill someone who reached nirvana? Don't they have good karma? What is nirvana? Stop your negative thoughts. Nirvana is not the same as Buddhahood. Nirvana is not the same as enlightenment. Nirvana comes a long time before enlightenment. It doesn't change your body. And it doesn't change your situation. You just ... [Говорящий 2] (12:46 - 12:49) nobody can upset you. [Говорящий 1] (12:50 - 13:21) How do you recognize a person who reached nirvana? The body doesn't change. Probably the face is like ... You can say, you know, you're a pretty stupid guy, Geshe Michael. He's like, okay, okay, yeah, yeah, all right. But the body doesn't change. So you can kill them. [Говорящий 2] (13:24 - 13:29) All right, those five bad deeds. [Говорящий 1] (13:29 - 13:42) PHYIR PA YANG, even if you do those things, DOR BYED THEG PA RGYA TSO BYAS If you enter tantra, DOR BYED THEG PA means Vajrayana, Diamond Way. [Говорящий 2] (13:46 - 13:55) If you enter the Diamond Way, which is like a big RGYA TSO. [Говорящий 1] (13:55 - 14:31) What's RGYA TSO? Ocean. It's a big subject. Vajrayana is a big subject. The fire you did last night, it takes about 20 years to learn to do it well. And you have to work constantly, all the time. You have to memorize large parts of it. Then that's just one little ceremony. There are hundreds. So, that's like an ocean. [Говорящий 2] (14:31 - 14:34) Vajrayana is like an ocean. [Говорящий 1] (14:36 - 15:34) THEG PA BYONG NI, BDE LA GRUB means even that person will achieve Buddhahood. Who did what? The five greatest bad deeds. Sometimes people come to me and they tell me, I did terrible things when I was a teenager. I didn't know anything. I did some really terrible things. Like, I myself did an abortion. I was involved in an abortion. Before I became a Buddhist. Then people tell me terrible things. Then don't worry, don't worry about it. [Говорящий 2] (15:36 - 15:38) Clean it. [Говорящий 1] (15:38 - 15:49) Then you can practice, you can practice meditation. Practice yoga. Then later you can practice Diamond Way Tantra. [Говорящий 2] (15:52 - 15:59) Then, no problem, you can become Buddha in this lifetime. [Говорящий 1] (16:01 - 16:39) But, but there's always a but. SNYING NAS BLO SPOS MED PA'I NI A person who criticizes their teacher, SNYING NAS means from their heart, sincerely. Okay, then there's, in the debating, we always debate, you know, three, four, five hours a day, sometimes ten hours a day. Then they'll say, this SNYING NAS, SNYING NAS, from your heart, to criticize, why did he add that? [Говорящий 2] (16:39 - 16:48) And why did he add criticizing from your heart, the line from your heart here he added in the text, why did he do it? [Говорящий 1] (16:49 - 17:21) Word, what do you think? As opposed to earlier things he did? Yeah, good, good. He said sometimes we slip. Like your, you know, your lama yells at you. In English we say you go sulk for ten minutes. Sulk? I used to be a very expert master sulker. [Говорящий 2] (17:23 - 17:34) Sulk means they yell at you and you're like, maybe you burn the dinner. [Говорящий 1] (17:41 - 20:03) Like that, okay. But then after dinner they hug you and you're like, you're still the greatest lama. So SNYING NAS means sustained criticism of your teacher. Then there's a debate, how many hours of sulking is sustained? Then to save you a lot of debating, I'll tell you, it means like a week or something. Like you hold this sustained anger at your lama for like a week or something. Then it's called from your heart. Then if that person, you know, you buy a bell and this thing and you're like ding, ding, ding, ding, you know, and you learn all these mantras of Mahamudra, you know, but nothing will happen. It's like, I don't know, it's like you have a jaguar but it's missing a wheel or something like that. Like it doesn't matter. The priest said something today from the Bible. I heard it many times when I was a child. We try all of our life to be famous. Gold, guns, and girls. They call the big three G's, right? Gold, guns, and girls. You want like power. You want power. You want relationship with the opposite sex. You want money. [Говорящий 2] (20:07 - 20:20) Then in the talk he gave today and I never understood those words until today. [Говорящий 1] (20:23 - 21:54) If trying to get those things the wrong way kills you, it doesn't matter if you get those things. Because you're dead. If you lose your life to get a jaguar or a pretty man or pretty girl, then it's just stupid because you're dead. You can't use a jaguar. You can't enjoy the girl or the boy. So tantra is the same. It's like if you try to do tantra without respecting the person who granted you tantra, then from the outside the car looks pretty good. It's a jaguar. Very shiny. Expensive. But there's one wheel missing. Then all of the other parts of the jaguar are meaningless, useless. It doesn't matter. I'd rather have bochito. [Говорящий 2] (22:00 - 22:01) With four wheels. [Говорящий 1] (22:01 - 22:05) Bochito with four wheels is better than a jaguar with three wheels. [Говорящий 2] (22:06 - 22:10) I think so. [Говорящий 1] (22:13 - 22:45) So tantra without respect of the teacher. It's just crazy. There's a joke in the scriptures. Somebody says, I'm really hungry but I don't feel like eating. Okay? You're supposed to laugh. I'm really hungry but I don't feel like eating. [Говорящий 2] (22:47 - 23:04) I want to practice tantra but I don't like my teacher. Then it's just like insane because teacher is everything for tantra. [Говорящий 1] (23:05 - 29:13) Those of you who are studying Tibetan, this last line, drup kyang druppa mingyuro Just the drup kyang druppa mingyuro. You should learn it. Sorry. There you go. Drup kyang druppa mingyuro. Yeah. There's two kinds of verbs in Tibetan. One is called chepa punggul su yupa and one is called chepa punggul su mempa. chepa punggul su yupa means there is a direct agent in the action. And chepa punggul su mempa means there's no direct agent in the action. So when you say the rain fell, which one is it? No direct agent. But ancient times Buddhists believed that angels dropped the rain. They sent the rain down. So that active doer is called, in that case it's called bepa, means to drop the rain. papa means rain fell. And this distinction here is very very famous and very very important. With the S grub druppa What's the Sanskrit for druppa? Siddha If you achieve your goals, goal is called artha, artha. Ring a bell? Siddha artha Siddhartha Siddhartha The one who achieved his goals. Siddhartha So the first grub means even if you try, the second grub is the chepa punggul su mempa, it's like a passive form. Nothing will happen. You can practice but there will be no there's no English. In English we don't have this. You can do but nothing will be done. You can do but nothing will be done. In Tibetan it's very heartbreaking and it's a little bit you can see it, it's a heartbreaking expression. You can drup drup drup drup means you can try, try, try, try. But mandruk, nothing will happen. It's a very heartbreaking expression. Sometimes we try really hard in our practice, but it seems like we're not making any progress. One place you can look for the problem is what is your relationship with your teacher? Is it happy? Is it healthy? By the way, the actual tantra, I looked it up. It's the root tantra to the Guhyasamaja. The last line is different. Drup kyang druppar yong ming gyur drup kyang druppar yong ming gyur means you can try but absolutely nothing will happen. The original tantra says absolutely. Okay, I'll tell you the name of problem number four and then we'll take a break. Number three, what was problem number three? Yeah, even if you practice the highest teachings, nothing, it won't work if you have a bad relationship with your teacher. Number four is more severe. The more energy you put into tantra, the more certain you will go to hell. Okay, that's worse, right? You put more and more energy into tantra if your relationship with your lama is not sweet. It will pervert that energy. That energy will become the opposite. The more work you do on tantra, the faster you'll go to hell. We'll talk about this cheerful subject after the break. [Говорящий 2] (29:20 - 29:27) I'm sorry, this is the sad part of this book. [Говорящий 1] (29:28 - 36:11) But it's important for me to warn you also. Sometimes I think I didn't warn my students enough. All right. ,ZHIG PA RGYU DON TSEN PA'I GRUB KYANG, ,GNYAL BA SOGS GRUB PA DANG DRA BA NI, Problem number four, even if you make great efforts in the secret teachings, the more hard work you put into practicing the secret teachings, it's as if you are putting hard work into going to the hell. ,BLO DPON LA DAM GCIG NYAMS PA, Say DAM GCIG. DAM GCIG. DAM GCIG is a special word. It means holy commitment or something like that. Holy commitment. Then if you're a holy commitment with your teacher, NYAMS PA, if you break it, or if you make some mistake in that commitment, ,RGYU GYI DON JI LTAR GRUB KYANG, the more work you practice the secret teachings, ,GNYAL BA GRUB PA GNYIS YIN, The GNYIS is very important. Those of you studying Tibetan, pay attention to the GNYIS. GNYIS means Go ahead. It means it's exactly the same as or it's nothing more than, it's absolutely nothing more than ,GNYAL BA GRUB, trying to put yourself in the hells. The more tantra you practice, if you don't have sweet relationship with your teacher, it's as if you are purposely trying to go to hell. Then he quotes a tantra. That tantra is called Dorje Nyingpo Gen. Dorje Nyingpo Gen means the jewel of the heart of the diamond. Jewel of the heart of the diamond. ,GANG GIS BLO PO NYAMS DAG MED, Any person who seriously criticizes their teacher. So again, there's this NYAMS DAG. It means sustained. It doesn't mean you get pissed off at your teacher for five minutes. It doesn't mean that. We all do that. It means you hold it for like more than a few days. If you do that, ,DE NI RGYU KUN GRUB PA'I CHOG, you can be the best tantra in the whole world. ,GNYIS DANG BDUN ZHIG RNAMS SPANG STE, You can give up sleeping. You can spend all night doing your tantra. The word BDUN ZHIG is an interesting word. Someday I would like to do a YouTube Tibetan dictionary. Then you just take important words in Tibetan scripture and you explain them for two minutes. Just one two minute video for each word. And make a video dictionary. So when I have time to do that, Katie's mom is like, BDUN ZHIG will be there. BDUN ZHIG means over busy life. Try to do too many things. Have too many friends. Have too many projects. Just busy. Too busy. So BDUN ZHIG SPANG means even if you're a great tantrica and you go on like a three year retreat and you don't do any busy, busy stuff means Facebook and cell phone and all this. ,GAL PA MTHONG DU LEG GRUB KYANG, You can go and retreat and you can work for a million years. Very hard in retreat. ,GAL SO GRUB PAR BYED PA'O, But the only thing you will reach is the hells. So that's the quotation where this idea comes from. I went and looked it up because I like to prove to myself that this is really coming from, that this was really spoken by the Buddha. And as you probably know after 25 years of work early last year we finished typing all the Buddhist books which survived from India. All of them. [Говорящий 2] (36:25 - 36:26) Coffee meditation. [Говорящий 1] (36:27 - 36:36) He wants me to do coffee meditation. But it's 4,600 books. [Говорящий 2] (36:45 - 36:46) After 25 years. [Говорящий 1] (36:47 - 39:39) Jigme and Phil are helping me although you don't know exactly what I'm going to ask you to do yet, but Jigme and Phil Jigme and Venerable Phil are helping me to create the English catalogs so that you know, because it's all in other language now so we're trying to create it in English. So that book in Sanskrit is called Sri Vajra Hridaya Alankara Tantra Nama. And it says, I thought you would like to know the I like to see the context of a quotation. Don't give me four lines that Buddha said. What was he talking about for ten pages before that? What did he say in the ten pages after that? I'm just going to give you the verse before that because it's sweet. He does say that even if you practice tantra very well for a million years if you don't have good relationship with your lama it will just take you to hell. But before that he says, the verse before that DE BA'I THABS NAS THAMS CAD KYIS RDO RJE BRTZON PA LAM MA CHOG RJES SU BRTZON PA'I GNYIS PAR CHA DE GNAS SANGS RGYAS THAMS CAD NYID Do everything you can to do what your teacher asked you to do. To do what this high lama asked you to do. The one who holds the diamond. Make them happy. If you make your lama happy you are making all the buddhas happy. So the verse before that is a little more encouraging. Okay. He goes now on to problem number five. We have about ten more minutes so let's start problem number five. I know you're really tired. I'm also really tired. That young guy dragged me up the mountain. What's his name? [Говорящий 2] (39:39 - 39:47) RDO RJES SU BRTZON PA'I GNYIS That young guy dragged me up the mountain. His name is Don Jesús. [Говорящий 1] (39:49 - 43:28) And Padre Osvaldo I think Don Jesús is 87. I'm guessing Padre Osvaldo is 70 something. No, Padre Osvaldo is 67. Oh man, really. Go once. Go once. I'm also going once. Okay. ,SNGAGS PA YON DE NGAR MA SKYED PA RNAMS SA DU NI, ,SKYE ZIN NYAMS PA NI, The fifth problem of not having sweet relationship with your teacher. The spiritual qualities which you do not have yet, you will not get them. It means nothing will improve. Your yoga will stay the same. Or worse. I watched some people do yoga for, I don't know, ten years and it didn't change. Or your meditation, it will just stay the same. Nothing will change. Also, ,SKYE ZIN NYAMS PA NI, The good practice which you already have, you will lose it. So the ones you don't have, you will not get. The qualities you don't have, you will not get. And whatever good qualities you had when you met your teacher, you will lose them. And that's very sad to watch. So I lived with my teacher for 25 years. I saw hundreds and hundreds of students come in and out the door. And some of them, when they come, they are pretty smart or they are pretty cool. And also in the monastery, I saw many young monks like that. In my class, my class had 60 guys in it in the beginning. At the end, only four survived. Then these young guys, they are really good debaters. I remember one guy, he's so good, when he claps his hand, his fingers will split here. And you don't want to debate with him because he's always spraying you. With the blood, with the blood. And then he's strong and healthy and smart. But he disrespected his teacher. Then one day he just suddenly died. Just like that. Somebody ran into the room, he said, he just died. We're all like, wow. We couldn't believe it. [Говорящий 2] (43:32 - 43:57) So even if you are very intelligent when you meet your teacher, and very devoted to the Dharma, if you keep disrespecting them or hurting that relationship, then I think the worst thing is that you just lose interest. [Говорящий 1] (44:03 - 44:18) To me, that's worse than dying. You're just like, oh, I don't have time to go this time. It's pretty far to Guadalajara. [Говорящий 2] (44:20 - 44:21) I know. [Говорящий 1] (44:21 - 44:47) Last time I got a little bit sick. Maybe I'll stay home and watch videos. And then mind just changed. So we have to be careful to keep a sweet relationship with the teacher. Lama Lama Nye Mer Shor Na, if you make a bubu, right? He uses that word. [Говорящий 2] (44:47 - 44:52) If you slip. [Говорящий 1] (44:53 - 45:07) Shor also means to slip coming down the mountain, which I did 25 times today. Paz was walking behind me, and she's like, catch me, like 25. I didn't hit my butt because of Paz. I'm like, whoa. [Говорящий 2] (45:17 - 45:19) That's called shor, shor. [Говорящий 1] (45:21 - 46:15) And if you slip and criticize your teacher, TSE DER RTOGS PA ZAR DU SKYE BA'I RGYAS BYAS CHING it blocks you from having great new spiritual experiences during your meditation or your yoga or like that. SNGAR BSKYED PA RNAMS NYAMS PAR GYUR BA And the good qualities you had before, you will lose them. Then he gives an example. LO BU'I SNGAGS PO CHOS PAS LAM MA RTZAL DANG DAG RA PAS RGA CHUNG SRED CHAGS PAS KHUS SRED DE LA CHOG MA GRUB There was an Indian yogi called Krishna Acharya. [Говорящий 2] (46:18 - 46:19) Krishna Acharya. [Говорящий 1] (46:20 - 46:30) If you want to mispronounce it, you can say Krishna. Krishna. There's no such Sanskrit. It's not a Sanskrit word. Krishna. Krishna. [Говорящий 2] (46:32 - 46:32) Okay? [Говорящий 1] (46:35 - 47:24) I don't like it when people mispronounce Sanskrit because Sanskrit is supposed to be a holy language and if you pronounce it correctly, it's supposed to be like magic because the sounds come from your chakras. But what really irritates me is when the students in a group mispronounce the name of their own teacher. Krishna. If you want to be really cool, turn your tongue back. Krishna. [Говорящий 2] (47:25 - 47:26) That's perfect. [Говорящий 1] (47:26 - 49:33) Krishna. That is why in India you got done. Okay? If you want to talk like that. Now we have a problem in our ACI DCI groups. We are visiting almost every country. And almost all the classes are on internet. So we cannot make jokes about Indian or Russian or because now our group has all of them. But I can still make fun of Americans. There are a lot of things to make fun about. The gringos. He told me they had a discussion at the cross tonight, today, before I reached the top. All those macho Mexican guys are having discussions. You think a gringo llama can make it up this mountain? Okay, never mind, never mind. So, Krishnacharya, his llama's name is Jalandharappa. Jalandhara, you know Jalandhara. So this is the guru who made that yoga practice popular. His name was Jalandhara. Then Krishnacharya is an awesome yogi, incredible tantric yogi. [Говорящий 2] (49:33 - 49:37) And Krishnacharya was an incredible tantric yogi. [Говорящий 1] (49:40 - 50:06) But a little bit, he broke his llama's ... he broke Jalandhara's ... Jalandhara asked him to do something and he broke it just a little bit. Kudse Dela Chomadrup And so he couldn't achieve enlightenment in that lifetime. We'll go one more minute. [Говорящий 2] (50:06 - 50:07) One more minute. [Говорящий 1] (50:07 - 50:51) RE CHUNG PAS KYANG MI LAS DKA' LEN GSUM CHAGS PAS KUD SES DE LA CHOK MA GRUB PAR SKYE BA GSUM LEN DGOS PAR GSUNGS PA DANG You know Milarepa? Milarepa? Very famous poet in Tibet and a great meditator. Those of you who are starting Buddhism late, late Buddhists, you'll be happy to know Milarepa didn't start his deep retreats until he was 50. [Говорящий 2] (50:51 - 50:56) When he was 50 he started his retreats. [Говорящий 1] (50:59 - 51:46) And then his retreat books are the most ... His poetry called GUR BUM Say GUR BUM. GUR BUM It means 100,000 songs of Milarepa. It's some of the most famous spiritual poetry in the world. RE CHUNG BA, who was Milarepa's student, broke Milarepa's request three times in his life. Probably Milarepa was saying, can you make a transcript of that last talk, or something like that. [Говорящий 2] (51:53 - 52:00) Then RE CHUNG BA said yes, but he didn't finish it. [Говорящий 1] (52:01 - 53:06) KUD SES DE LA CHOK MA GRUB PAR So he couldn't achieve enlightenment in that last talk. SKYE BA GSUM LEN GRUB PAR SKYE BA GSUM LEN GRUB PAR And before he became enlightened, he had to live three more lifetimes, because he broke it three times. Then I spent a lot, I was curious, what were the three things he did mistake. Maybe it's something I have to confess myself, you know. So I'll tell you what I found, maybe next class.
