[Говорящий 2] (0:00 - 0:13)
Okay, I thought we'd start off with the meditation. Don't use your earplugs on this one, because this one I have to describe.

[Говорящий 1] (0:17 - 11:02)
So, I'd like to describe the meditation before we do it, okay? This is for Berlin, okay, Berlin meditation. When we were in Beijing, some people, almost everybody in the world, but just recently we were there, and some people were telling me they had a lot of trouble doing coffee meditation, they had a lot of trouble before falling off to sleep, their mind, because you're tired, your mind is very weak, and everybody, me too, and it tends to obsess on problems.

I mean, my mind, I've been watching it, and it has three things it thinks about, besides food. One is, in the past, I think about people who hurt me, and then for the future, I worry about things that might or might not happen, and then I make plans. And then these three things, in addition to the food thoughts, which are probably more total than those three, they take over my mind.

My mind is in one of those three modes anytime I fall asleep. And so, we need help, right? So people were asking me, in China they're saying, how can I fix that, or what can I do about that?

And there's a nice meditation you can do, especially, for example, if you know you're going to have some challenging thing today. You have a meeting with all the people from Tepoztlan and Guadalajara in the afternoon, and it's going to be many things to decide, and it's impossible to make everyone happy, and you're like, oh, that's going to be a tough meeting. Then I have many meetings like that, and you feel sort of nervous, and you're like, oh, I don't know how it's going to come out.

And then there's a practice you can do. You can do tonglen, right? So we all know tonglen.

Tonglen is a practice, it's a pranayama, right? It's a breathing practice connected with a meditation. It was popularized by the first Panchen Lama about 450 years ago.

And it's where you do the meditation using your breath, and then it helps your mind because you're using your breath and your prana, and it calms your mind down. And then tonglen means you take away a problem from another person with your breath. And then tong means you offer them in replacement for the problem because there'll be a big vacuum, right?

Because we all have so many problems. If you took away all your problems, you wouldn't have anything else to do. So you have to give them something helpful.

So you take away their problems on the breath, and then you give them comfort on the breath. So normally you do it with another person, but there's a tradition of doing it on yourself, on your future self. So if you know you're having a difficult meeting in the afternoon, you can send, what do you call that?

It's not reinforcement, but some fancy English word. You send yourself moral support or something. It's like that.

You send yourself fortification. You fortify yourself. You fortify yourself.

You send help to the future Michael who's going to have a tough meeting this afternoon. And you can do that in business, and you can do that in anything you do. And you can do it, if you have a blockage in your attempts to use the diamond cutter, right?

If you've been trying to get some goal, but there seems to be some obstacles. Maybe they're old karmas or something. Then you need to do more coffee meditation, because you have all the seeds you need to be enlightened, much less have a million dollars or find a nice man.

You already have in your mind. You've done nice things for billions of years. The seeds are there.

You just have to activate them. You have to wake them up. So you have to do coffee meditation.

But then a lot of people say, I can't do coffee meditation because of those four... You're going to learn about dushe sambhava. Say, dushe sambhava.

It means Mr. Three Thoughts. Nick's going to teach about Mr. Three Thoughts. I'm Mr. Four Thoughts. So if you have those... If you have trouble doing... If you have some blockage in achieving your goals, the woodpecker came back.

If you have... I have this karma. If I go to any country in the world, in the hotel, they'll be drilling next door.

I'm not kidding, right? Mercedes was there. Every, like, ten countries.

No, in Singapore, they decided to drill on my wall from the outside. So anyway, where was I? So I know I have all those good seeds in my mind.

I know if I could wake them up, I could achieve a nice partner and find financial security. But I have trouble doing the coffee meditation before I sleep, which would wake up those seeds. So how can I...

What are the seeds to do better seed management? You see what I mean? What's the seeds to have a better coffee meditation?

One thing you can do is tonglen on yourself. So you can fortify yourself. You can send help to your future self in the afternoon.

I used to do it a lot in corporate life. So I would have... Did you ever have those things at work where the boss calls you and says, I need to see you tomorrow at three.

And there's this tone in their voice and you're like, maybe they're going to fire me. You always have this thing, because the tone in their voice. Or they're going to put somebody above me in the company or they're going to shift me to some job I don't want to do.

You feel it in their voice. And they're trying to be cheerful. And you can sense that they're trying to be cheerful.

They're like, let's get together tomorrow at three. And then all night you can't sleep. Because you're like, are they going to fire me?

Are they going to move me out? In corporate life, I used to do this tonglen a lot. I'd say, okay, I'm sending help to Michael tomorrow at three o'clock.

Probably 3.05. 3.10, because 3.05 he's nice. 3.10 he starts to criticize you and tell you why he's cutting you. And then you can send help to Michael.

You can send a letter to Michael or a packet. Then at 3.10, the next day in the meeting, the boss starts to yell at you. And you open the letter.

And it says, don't get mad. I knew you'd get mad, and I'm just telling you not to get mad. And then you're like...

No, and it works. It's a very strange practice. It's a very unusual practice.

So what I'm suggesting we meditate on today is sending yourself help for your coffee meditation tonight. Okay, how's that? So this morning, we're going to mail a letter to Michael, who's going to bed tonight.

And then he's going to not think about those four thoughts, or at least three maybe. And then he's going to get a letter when he puts his head down on the pillow. Some kind of...

The way it feels, to tell you how it feels to be the object of a tonglen, of a good tonglen, is it's going to hit you. Like you're going to start thinking about, what can I have for breakfast tomorrow? And then it's going to hit you, and you're going to go like, oh, we did such nice things today in the retreat.

I should be happy about those. Okay? You will get a package of help from yourself.

And it is physical feeling. It feels like something hits your chest, and it fortifies you. Then suddenly you're like, okay, I can do this thing.

And the meetings always change because the karma changes. Then suddenly the boss is like, yeah, well, that's the problems I have with you, but I decided you're so fantastic and valuable that I'm going to give you a raise. It always goes like that.

It always goes like that. When the package hits, suddenly the karma changes, and they give you a raise or something. Okay, so let's send a letter to ourselves.

Okay? Now. And then we'll receive it tonight.

Some people's mail is slower than others. Okay. FedEx.

I used to have a Verizon phone. I shouldn't say this, but I'm going to anyway, because I can't control myself. It was the suckiest phone.

I'd get texts from my friends three days later. Nicole was at the post office with some groceries. For two hours, I got the text two hours later.

I have to go down to the post office and meet her and get my groceries. She's like, where is he? Didn't Verizon ask us to give a talk in Philadelphia next month?

Why did I mention that? Oh, yeah. Some people's letters are slower than others.

Maybe you have Verizon. But we're going to fix them. We're giving a talk to them next month.

[Говорящий 2] (11:09 - 11:29)
Relax your face, please. Relax your eyelids.

[Говорящий 1] (11:30 - 11:40)
Your eyelids are really important. Learn to judge your relaxedness from the tightness of your eyelids.

[Говорящий 2] (11:45 - 12:07)
Relax the corners of your mouth. Tuck in your tummy. Let your shoulders go.

And bring the shoulder blades slightly together.

[Говорящий 1] (12:08 - 12:20)
Puff your chest out slightly. Draw your hands. If your hands are on your thighs, isometrically pull them a little bit towards your torso, and that will straighten out your chest.

[Говорящий 2] (12:34 - 15:45)
Then please come softly to your breath, gently to your breath. We'll just start by watching the breath. Now I'd like to switch the focus to the exhales.

Special attention to the exhales. Now please divide the exhales into three parts.

[Говорящий 1] (15:46 - 16:00)
Focus on the start of the breath after the pause. Then focus on the duration of the breath as it leaves your nostrils. And then focus upon the ending of the breath as it goes into another pause.

[Говорящий 2] (16:00 - 17:59)
And we're focusing on three parts of the exhale. Now please picture yourself as you will be tonight, laying down on your children's bunk bed, crunched up there, trying to sleep. You put your head down on the pillow.

[Говорящий 1] (18:01 - 18:15)
And now you are, this morning's you, is in the room almost like a spirit, invisible, maybe sitting on a bunk bed opposite or sitting on the floor.

[Говорящий 2] (18:17 - 20:04)
And you are visiting your future self as they try to go to sleep tonight. So let's get used to being in the room with our future self tonight. You're just watching them.

They're fiddling around with the pillow, trying to keep their head off the wooden bar there. Then we're going to create a bridge between us and ourselves so that we can draw out of them worries about the future or hurt about the past and food thoughts.

[Говорящий 1] (20:06 - 20:31)
So I'd like you to start observing your exhales again, but this time pretend that they are coming out of your third eye, right? The area between your eyebrows, up about half an inch. And don't think of this area as being part of your skin.

[Говорящий 2] (20:32 - 20:43)
You should think of it as an opening that comes about almost an inch into your head.

[Говорящий 1] (20:45 - 21:01)
So that's what I would like you to focus on, almost like you have a nostril in your forehead. And I'd like you to start breathing out of that nostril in your forehead.

[Говорящий 2] (21:02 - 22:57)
And the exhales will be coming out of there. Long, nice exhales coming from your forehead, lower forehead, inside of your lower forehead. The exhales come straight out from your forehead.

[Говорящий 1] (22:57 - 26:25)
They come out parallel to the ground, so it's not like warm air coming out of your nose that comes down your face and touches your lips. The air, the exhale is coming directly straight out of your forehead. Then there's an exercise in the monastery.

They ask us, how long can you make the exhale? Imagine the exhale as a piece of breath, almost like a ruler. How many inches away from the forehead can you breathe your exhale?

So don't force it, but gently see if you can make your exhales longer, almost like sighs, relaxed sighs, that are coming out of your forehead directly. And give it a nice big sigh at the end and let the breath go further from your forehead. And it's heading towards the face of yourself with your head just put down on the pillow.

We're going to see if gently, exhale by exhale, you can increase the distance that the exhale goes from your forehead towards yourself, towards your own face, as you lay on the pillow. Now I'd like you to imagine that the exhale is so long and fine and calm, like a happy sigh, that it has touched the forehead of yourself, laying with your head on the pillow.

[Говорящий 2] (26:30 - 27:34)
Brush your forehead like a feather, and maybe tonight you will feel something like a feather touching your forehead. Now that breath between the two foreheads has solidified into like something made of ice or glass, and it's a small tube connecting the two foreheads.

[Говорящий 1] (27:43 - 29:14)
Then imagine all the worries about the future that are in that poor, what do you call it, beloved head of ourselves, laying on the pillow. And you're watching yourself worry on the pillow, and you're watching yourself feel hurt about the past. And take all of those thoughts of worry about the future and hurt about the past and imagine them like a small piece of tar resting in the heart of yourself, laying on the bed.

If you've ever been a surfer on the Pacific Coast, it's the little lump of tar that you step in on the beaches, maybe as big as your thumbnail, gooey, very sticky and it's hard to get off. That tar is all the worries, all the hurt, all the thoughts that are blocking yourself tonight from rejoicing and appreciating yourself and the good things you've been doing.

[Говорящий 2] (29:19 - 29:25)
Then look into your own heart. See a beautiful rose at your heart.

[Говорящий 1] (29:27 - 29:51)
It's good to push it back a little bit towards the backbone, but make it clear, soft petals, fresh fragrance, beautiful, subtle fragrance in the rose and maybe a few drops of rain on the petals, very pristine, clean, pure, fresh.

[Говорящий 2] (30:01 - 30:21)
In the center, some golden filaments that you see inside of a rose and nestled in those filaments, a beautiful, perfect diamond, glistening, sparkling, gently.

[Говорящий 1] (30:28 - 31:10)
And this diamond has the power to destroy the black tar of your worries and your hurt. And if you could draw the black tar in towards that diamond and if the black tar touched that diamond, the diamond has such power, like electricity, it would destroy the thoughts of being hurt or having worries. So we're going to draw that tar with our breath up out of the other person, yourself, tonight, and we're going to bring it into ourselves.

[Говорящий 2] (31:10 - 31:45)
So let's just start breathing naturally. See the glass tube connecting the two foreheads. And like a McDonald's drinking straw, you are drawing up the small black tar out of your heart, out of the heart of the you who is on the bed.

Don't bring it into your body yet.

[Говорящий 1] (31:45 - 31:59)
Take a few breaths and draw it out of their forehead and bring it across the bridge until it's almost touching your forehead and leave it there until further instructions.

[Говорящий 2] (32:00 - 33:02)
Let's do that. You're almost like a doctor taking a tumor out of someone. Now the blackness is just outside your forehead.

[Говорящий 1] (33:03 - 34:09)
It's very important that we will together, on the count of three, we'll take a nice deep inhale and we'll draw that blackness immediately down to the heart, to the diamond. And when they make contact, there'll be a flash of light. My Lama always compared it to a camera flash that fills your whole body.

And in that moment, the blackness is destroyed. All the worries about the future, all the hurt about the past inside yourself, on the pillow, will be destroyed. And just in final touch, you can see like a brief smoke coming out.

Just all that's left is smoke, and then the smoke dissipates very slowly, and then it's gone. And the you tonight doesn't have those things, and the you right now has not been hurt by those things because they were destroyed in a single inhale.

[Говорящий 2] (34:09 - 34:12)
Totally. Nothing left.

[Говорящий 1] (34:13 - 34:25)
So on the count of three, gently suck in the darkness, let it touch the diamond, and see the photo flash go off and destroy those worries and that hurt.

[Говорящий 2] (34:25 - 35:16)
One, two, and three. Flash of light, just like a very light cigarette smoke, just dissipating, and then it's gone. The diamond's still there, the rose is still there, fresh raindrops on the rose petals, slight fragrance.

Then exhale that fragrance back through the straw between the two foreheads.

[Говорящий 1] (35:18 - 35:20)
Very subtle fragrance.

[Говорящий 2] (35:21 - 36:04)
The you tonight will only feel a feather touch on the forehead, and then some kind of hope, happiness, subtle, feeling like the fragrance of the rose. Send the fragrance into their body, to their forehead. They have this big smile on their face, crunched up in that little kid's bunk bed, and it's easy for them to do coffee meditation.

[Говорящий 1] (36:05 - 36:18)
They start, instead of worrying or feeling hurt about the past, worrying about the future, now they're thinking about hope and beautiful things that have happened to them today.

[Говорящий 2] (36:19 - 36:58)
Hope for the future, appreciation for the good things of the past, instead of hurt or worry. Those are powerful seeds. Then slowly come back to this room.

You can gently open your eyes, stretch, drink something if you have.

[Говорящий 1] (36:59 - 37:02)
You should have something to drink with you all the time, okay?

[Говорящий 2] (37:03 - 37:04)
It's a desert, right?

[Говорящий 1] (37:10 - 37:22)
Any questions about that? Or comments, or observations, or anything you think might enhance it a little bit? Love.

I just have a question.

[Говорящий 2] (37:24 - 37:49)
When you are another person, and you hear that someone has cancer, and you wake up, when you come out of the meditation, the cancer didn't go away, but we have opened our hearts in the world to see them become healers. Hopefully. Yes.

When we do shamanize ourselves, it's kind of good.

[Говорящий 1] (37:51 - 41:19)
What do you guys think? You understand the question? The third law of how karma ripens.

There are four laws of how karma ripens, called the four flowers. And the third flower says that... The first one is obvious.

You give money to somebody, you'll get money back. You get angry at people, people get angry at you. But the third flower says that...

It's called dakpa kin, right? It's the effect on your environment. The people and the things that you see.

We created the Prescott forest, and today is a nice day, and we created that. So almost in the way... The prana in the body works in a strange way, that the condition of the prana in the inner body determines the shape of the external body.

So we're going to dance today with a master teacher, and that gets the prana going in your inner body. And that affects your outer body because your outer body congeals around your inner body. And then the world congeals around your external body.

So as your karma goes, so goes your external world and the people you meet. So what Anatole is saying is that one of the principles of tonglen is that because I change the seeds in my own heart, I will see that person change towards whom I'm doing the tonglen, right? But I didn't change their seeds.

You see, they might still see themselves as having cancer for example, but I'll see them be cured. Can I take away another person's cancer? Which one?

The one you see or the one they see? Right? Yeah, you can take away the one that you see.

A Buddha doesn't experience in their own paradise people who are suffering. But those people might see themselves in hell at the same time. Okay, it's possible.

All right? So now you see the implication of his question. So who's feeling better on the bunk bed?

I would say both. I would say they're really going to change because they are of the same mental stream as you. If you're interested, if you're into old rock and roll, like maybe Ben and Rick, the Sanskrit word is Santana.

And there's a stream that connects you with that person on the bunk bed. There's a stream of consciousness that connects you with that. Your mind is like a spaghetti noodle with no end and no beginning.

And so you're on the same spaghetti noodle as that person. So I'd say it's actually going to work to both people, you see, in their perception as well because they did it this morning. They will also see their worries go away.

Again, that's kind of a cool question though. I like the question. Okay.
