[Speaker 1] Your last question, which I didn't have time to answer. It's covered in DCI Level 3, right? There's this paradox about trying to meditate because, according to us, everything in your world is coming from you, right? From seeds in your mind. And those seeds are planted by how you treat, mainly by how you treat other people, how you take care of other people. So, it stands to reason that what you hear in your own mind is also emanating out of those same seeds. So, obviously, if you meet an irritating person, they are... It's an overlay, like those... What do you call those things they used to use in school? It's a transparency. So, you are laying a transparency over this other person. And if you had planted better seeds, the same person would have seemed pleasant today. They're not pleasant or irritating from their own side. That's what emptiness means. They are just neutral, like a white screen. And then you place a transparency over them and you interpret them as pleasant or unpleasant. The same applies to the thoughts you hear in your own mind. So, like if you wanted to treat depression from a highest Buddhist worldview, you would encourage the person to help another person with depression. That's why we believe that the 12-step AA works so well because it's based on helping... The sponsors help other people who have the same problem. According to our theory, that's the best thing you can do for an addiction. So, the thoughts you hear in your own mind, it's a very basic thing and we don't think about it much, but it's a contradiction to be listening to your thoughts and be the person speaking them at the same time. It's not possible that it's happening at the same time. The thoughts must be occurring a millisecond before, spoken a millisecond before, and you are hearing them a millisecond later. You see? I like to think of it as the light from a star. So, you know this idea that the light from a star gets to Earth, I don't know, so many light years later, and it's possible that those star has already burned out. The same is true of thoughts in your mind. By the way, the word Dharmadhatu, which Chogyam Trungpa's organization took as one of their names, means what you're focusing on, which is a millisecond old, and it's your thoughts. It's mainly your thoughts. So, by the time you're aware of a thought in your mind, that's already been thunked. It's past, it's past tense, and therefore you can't change it. You see? There was a joke, Ken Rinpoche, my teacher, people used to come up to him and say, Rinpoche, I feel depressed. And I used to help translate for him, not his Tibetan, but his English. No, sometimes his Tibetan, but mostly his English. And then he would look at, the person would describe their depression for like 20 minutes, and then Rinpoche would look at them, and he'd drink some tea, and he'd say, just be happy. And then we'd both be waiting for him to say something else. He'd say, okay, bring up the next person. And then I asked him later, what do you mean, Rinpoche, just be happy? What kind of advice is this for a person who's really seriously depressed? The point is, you are listening to thoughts that have been thunked a millisecond before. It's too late. When you experience distraction in meditation, that's coming out of seeds that were created a month ago or a week ago by interrupting someone, for example. I do it all the time when I speak. That's why I prefer to speak in front of a crowd, because I don't have to interrupt, I just keep going. No, but I mean, we all have this tendency, I think, many of us have this tendency to over, what do you call it? We override people. They're trying to express something, and we just keep interrupting them. And then that plants a seed, and then you're meditating a week later, and you can't focus, and you can't concentrate. So you are listening to thoughts coming out of a seed that you planted a week ago. So all this stuff about proper posture and the nine levels of meditation and all that, it's all kind of useless. Je Tsongkapa said, the founder of our lineage, the teacher of the first Dalai Lama said, just be more attentive to other people, what they're trying to express. Give other people a chance to talk, especially the shy ones. And then that seed will create better concentration later. So yeah, the thoughts coming up in your own mind are pretty much out of your current control, which is true of all the circumstances of your life. You can't, in the present moment, stuff a tree back into the ground. All you can do is plant new ones. That raises the question of how can a distracted person plant? And that's the meaning of samsara. So samsara means it tends to cycle. There's a tendency towards perpetuation. You interrupt people. You become a distracted person and then you're more likely to interrupt people again. And then to break cycles is very hard. According to Buddhism, the way to break a cycle is the understanding that stuff is coming from you. That's the great monkey wrench of all time. If you grasp that stuff is coming from how you treated people before, you have a chance of breaking cycles. And the name for that is prajnaparamita. All right, so that's the answer to the pre-vomit question. Sorry. [Speaker 2] No, really? Okay. I was just going to follow up. So what you're saying is like the antidotes, the eight antidotes to the five problems of meditation, they don't work either unless you plant the seeds for them. [Speaker 1] It's a question, so his question is, what is it, eight problems of meditation, eight antidotes, five problems of meditation, classic five problems and the eight antidotes. Do they work or do they not work? This is similar to the question of how yoga works. Does yoga work or not? And the answer is it's neutral. We know from personal experience, and I think this kind of logic appeals to everybody in the world. Wherever we go, when you say what I'm about to say, people are like, uh-huh. Yoga, aspirin, financial strategies, girlfriend strategies, they're all neutral. They don't work and they don't not work. And we know that. I didn't bother taking aspirin today because I know something's just, it's like a crapshoot. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't work. Or maybe it'll make me feel weird. And yoga, you can hurt your shoulder forever or you can be young and vigorous for many years. So yoga and financial strategies, every single one can be a disaster or it can be a windfall. And girlfriend strategy is obviously the same. So what we say is that yoga is the apparent cause of good health and sanity. On the tour, we find it keeps our sanity. Yoga is the apparent cause. But there's a cause under the apparent cause, which is the real cause, which has to act through the medium of the yoga. You see what I mean? So could I, the real cause of how yoga works is taking care of other people, especially people who are sick or don't have energy. Then that plants a seed. And then when you go to Jenny's yoga class, it works for you and you feel really good. So then of course the question comes, do you need the intermediate step? Do you need the medium? Do you need the instrument through which the karma expresses itself? And the answer is in the beginning you do. At the advanced stages you don't. And that's miracles. Then that gets into the realm of miracles. So this medium step, the instruments, the means through which the cause expresses itself tends to accelerate. So in the beginning you need to do a lot of yoga. And on the way to the yoga studio, you have to stop and visit an elderly person who's ill or doesn't have energy. And then that will provide the real cause for the instrument of the yoga to work on you. At some point you can drop the instrument. And then you see these guys, they just eat candy bars all day and they look great. They have energy. You know what I mean? Like Ningbo. He eats like a horse. And then you're like, dang. Okay, all right. They have good karma. So here we go. We're going to do the text. Ningbo, we're at suksok ngak, right? Suksok ngak. suksok ngak dorje ma ngar kye pa Suksok means the... Suksok can either mean rupa, right? In Sanskrit, rupa. Physical manner. And the other four factors inside of a human being. Or it can refer to the five outer objects of the senses. Suk, dra, ti, ro, rek, ca. Those five. In this case, it's the five objects of the senses. So when they say form, et cetera, there could be two possibilities and you have to figure out which one it is. If you're translating it, you have to figure out which one it is. Because they're both ngak. They're both five. So the objects of the senses. Kye pa means... Kye pa is an important verb in Buddhism. It means you make something out of something. Like kye rim means you make an angel out of yourself. So there has to be something that you make into something and there's something that it becomes. Here, you take the five objects of the senses and you turn them into angels. You turn them into angels. And they're called the angel of forms, the angel of sounds, the angel of fragrance, the angel of taste, the angel of... This is a hard one. Touches. Kye pa. Sik sin la. Sik sin is an important term if you're going to translate Tibetan. Sik means word. Sin means past tense and zin means hold, held. Sik sin means the word held. It's an idiom that means literally in the text. If you go to the original text and you look for what I'm about to say, you misel. It's not clear. It's not clearly stated outright in the original text, but I'm going to tell you something that's there. But it's not sik sin. It's not clearly elucidated in the wording of the text. Sik sin la misel. Yang pa. Sang du lu gyul tar. If we follow the body mandala of the Guhyasamaja Tantra, the way in which you put angels inside of your body in that secret tradition, which was one of the earliest traditions to reach Tibet, and it's probably the primary tradition for the two tantric colleges in our lineage. So there are two great gyu tu and gyu me tantric colleges. Our lineage, personal lineages, gyu me, which is where my teacher went. So that's probably the most important practice in the Tibetan tantric colleges. Normally in Tibet, you don't get into tantric college until you finish a geshe. And you have to be a haramba geshe, which I'm not. You have to be a high... It takes an extra five to 10 years. And very rare. Maybe two a year from each monastery. One or two a year. Some years, nobody. LUS KHYOD LTAR RANG RANG GI YAB Each one is embracing their YAB. And that's the YAB in YAB YUM. Partners, YAB YUM. Male partners called YAB. Female partners called YUM. YAB is also the high honorific for a father. So if you were addressing a princess about her father, you would say, how's your YAB? You wouldn't say, how's your papa? Pa. YAB SEMS PA SO SO means the bodhisattvas. The five ladies of the five objects of the senses are embracing their corresponding bodhisattva, which we gave you yesterday. You had the list of the corresponding bodhisattvas. PHEN GZON means each other. KHYOD PA means to embrace or to hold in their arms. So TSUL DU SKYES, you should visualize in that way. BA BU DGRA BCONG NI PHYI GCIG STONG This is from the original text. What's the original text we're talking about here? It's called KHYAL SANGS RDZIN GYIN. It's a text that was written by the teacher of the teacher of the teacher of the current Dalai Lama. Pabongka Rinpoche's teacher wrote a text which you can use to do the six preliminaries before meditation. It's a recitation text. It's a beautiful poetry text that you can quickly recite before meditation to take yourself through the six steps of meditation. Why was this course called The Seven Doors of Meditation if there are only six steps to meditation? Yeah, I think part five, which we haven't gotten to yet, it should probably be in Guadalajara or something. Part five is composed of seven parts. There are six preliminary practices to meditation. The fifth one has seven steps to it. So don't get confused between six and seven. The seven is inside the number five in the six. All right, I think it's number five. Anyway, if we have time and if I have time to translate it, which is like impossible, but we should learn that text, the recitation text by Pabongka Rinpoche's teacher, Drupkangpa. So here it is. It says, BABU DRAG CHENG BABU means the pores of your skin. The pores in the skin that little hairs come out of. I was in the debate ground in Seren at the winter debates and I'm sitting there listening. You're all smashed in. You're on top of each other for like three, four, five hours, sometimes all night. I mean, somebody's going like this. And I'm like, and he's this guy and he's just like that. And I'm like, what are you doing? And he's like, I've never seen anybody with hair on their arm because they don't have hair. Tibetans use a tweezers to shave. They go like. And so that's a BABU. That's a BABU. The BABUS are DRAG CHENG. DRAG CHENG means arhat. Arhat means someone who has achieved nirvana. That's it. The pores of their skin are beings who have reached nirvana. Arhat. BSHAD PA NI NYAN RANG DRAG CHENG PA MIN PAR Don't think they are lower track arhats, listeners and self-made Buddhists. Have you heard about those guys lately? Yeah, we've been on like a two-year thing in the Umajiddin, right? Discussing whether people who lack compassion can achieve nirvana. And the answer is yes. Why? Because they can see emptiness. How does it feel for them? They're having fights with their partner and then somebody tells them, look, tonight we're going to cover the pen thing, which is the key to everything. But that's what Summer wants to film, I think like a three-minute thing for her movie. And I'm sure we'll hit it on the first try. But the thing is that the way your partner behaves is coming from you. If you grasp that, then you can reach nirvana. Because nirvana is the permanent ending of anger, etc. And you don't have to have compassion to reach that. It helps, but you don't have to. So there are people without high ideals of global warming that can still see emptiness. Like some physicists, I think, are flirting with it all the time. DRA BCOM MIN PAR Not to say physicists can't be compassionate, but those who are not, or who don't seem to be, could still have great insights into the nature of reality. The, what do you call it? Heisenberg principle, etc. The nature of light, for example. Someone who really understands that would understand emptiness. Because light behaves in two contradictory ways depending on who's observing it. All light. We don't know how light comes from the sun to the earth. Still, we don't understand it. So anyway, THEG CHEN DRA BCOM THEG CHEN These are not lower track. These are THEG CHEN. Mahayana. These are, not only that, they are SANG YAS. So there are two kinds of, well, no, there's only one kind of arhats, which is, yeah. Anyway, they are full Buddhas. They are fully enlightened Buddhas. When the text says, and I used to wonder, why are we picturing just arhats at the pores of our skin if we could be picturing full Buddhas? And he says, these are arhats who are already full Buddhas. SANG RGYAS PA PA'I GNYIS GNYIS means what? GNYIS That's a high tone. GNYIS This is GNYIS. GNYIS GNYIS or only, exclusively. Empty GNYIS in Sanskrit is? In Sanskrit, GNYIS DA So the DA, the DA came into the English language as SHEN, T-I-O-N, like motion, or meaning that quality or that thing. GNYIS But here it means exclusively. They are only arhats. DE YANG PHA BU KUNG BU RE RYANG In each of the KUNG BUS of the PHA BU, so PHA BU technically is the little tiny hairs, and the PHA BU is the KUNG. KUNG means a small indentation or a small hole. A ME KUNG is what? A fire pit for a HOMA, for a fire offering. We're going to do some in Guadalajara. We'll do two fire offerings. Very ancient, a couple thousand years old. And we have a very nice pure lineage, so we do it the old way. And you need a ME KUNG. In the old days, you used a pit. Nowadays, you use a platform. ME KUNG BU RE RYANG SANGS RGYAS KYI GZHING KHAM RE There is a complete Buddha paradise within each pore of whose skin? The central figure of your teacher, your personal teacher. Somebody came up to me during the break and said, I thought you were my personal teacher, and you just keep saying you're our scripture teacher. I'm happy to be your personal teacher, but I don't want to assume that or to push you on that. I think I should respect that you each have your own... I'm not opposed to the idea, but I'm just saying I'm not trying to push it or sell it. It's just you have to decide for yourself who's your personal teacher. I'm happy with that, to be. But I'm also happy if you discover that your personal teacher is your heart teacher, someone else in your life that you really feel connected to. I'm happy with both. I'm not happy if you don't find one. So you have to work hard to, quote, find one. The karma for, quote, finding one is what? You share what you have learned in a non-missionary way. Not you go bang on doors and give them blue six-armed guy pictures and say... Okay. ,GPA BU KUN PUR NER, SANGS RGYAS KYI GZHING KHAM RE, Every single pore of their skin contains an entire Buddha paradise. ,BLA BLA DU LTUL BA DANG, ,BLA BLA CHUNG KHOR KHOR BA SOGS ZAD PA CHUD NI, In each of those Buddha paradises, there are Buddhas who are performing the ZAD PA CHUD NI. Say ZAD PA. ,ZAD PA CHUD NI, What's that? The 12... Not CHUD PA. ZAD PA is the High Honorific for Deeds. So what's that? The 12 Deeds of a Buddha. So when a Buddha shows up on a planet, they typically go through 12 periods of their life. As a play. Like the Buddha who appeared on this planet was enlightened a long time ago. Many, many zillions of years before they came to this planet. They were enlightened in the arms of Tilottama, his partner, at dawn. It's a beautiful story. Then he came to this planet like a zillion years later. Then they go through the 12 acts of a Buddha to demonstrate to us how to do it. So in each of the pores of the skin is a complete Buddha paradise. There are Buddhas pretending to do the 12 Deeds of a Buddha. NAM PAR ROLD PA means playing. Playing out that, what do you call it, drama. Of, oh, the prince saw a dead man and left the palace. Like that. He gives examples. LA LA means in some... LA LA means in some. Not like Los Angeles, LA LA land. LA LA means in some of those paradises. DU LTUL BA Those Buddhas are... Those Buddhas are... DU means what? Demon. LTUL BA means to... LTUL BA is a verb from DUL BA. Vinaya. Yeah, which means to control them. They are taming the demons or controlling the demons. When was the big moment that Lord Buddha DU LTUL BA? Yeah, I sat there. It was powerful. I sat there under the tree in Bodhgaya. We taught the Diamond Cutter for the first time in English, sitting under the tree at Bodhgaya. It was awesome. Something big happened there. Anyway, the story is that this demoness, Mara, wanted to distract Lord Buddha in the final moments of his enlightenment. Emanated beautiful ladies and also threw spears and shot arrows and like that. Then halfway to the Buddha, they all changed into flowers. I think that's a tremendous... What do you call it? Metaphor? For our life. Someone can attack you and someone can wish to do you harm. But if you have been a nice person, those arrows will turn to flowers halfway to you. Every attack that's waged on you or every unkind word that's said to you, if you are leading a good life, they will somehow benefit. Somehow they will turn to something good. That's what it is to beat a demon. We don't think you go out with a sword and you fight some big nasty guy like James Bond. That movie was two hours too long, right? We got to avoid that. Even I knew it was too long. I'm just... Anyway, fighting a demon isn't like some bloody thing. Fighting a demon means when people are bad to you, you are kind to them. Then the spears turn into flowers. That's one of the Twelve Deeds mentioned here. Some are fighting demons. Some are chungkor korwa. They are turning the chungkor. The wheel of Dharma. They are teaching the Dharma. Why is it called a wheel? Why is that Buddhist wheel, eight spoke wheel? It means I'm turning it to you and now you have to turn it to the next generation. It means that. You have to keep the wheel turning. My job ends today on these particular folios. I'm not spending another 20 years teaching this text. Then and now it's your problem. You do it in your own way. You do it in your own way. I don't think it's going to be with Tibetan grammar. You pass it on in your own beautiful way. However it comes to you to pass it on, you pass it on. But I korwa it to you. Now you have to korwa it to the next generation. Each generation spins it to the next generation. I thought I knew you would want to hear all 12 of the deeds, which he only mentions two of them. Here we go. You ready? We covered it in the Tucson, in a basketball court. What? Basketball gymnasium. At the Uttara Tantra. We went through it in the Uttara Tantra. But here we go again. Number one. GANG LDAN GNAS NAS PO'A Say GANG LDAN. GNAS NAS PO'A It's not up there. I'm just giving to you from another scripture. GANG LDAN means? Tushita, yeah, the heaven of bliss. There's some kind of connection between tush and bliss. I haven't worked it out yet. GANG LDAN GNAS NAS Tushita, from the heaven called Tushita. I believe there is a connection, but that's a long story. GANG LDAN GNAS NAS As there is between asana and as. Because as means to sit. But that's another story. GANG LDAN GNAS NAS means from Tushita. PO'A means came down. Came down. Angel came down from heaven. Jimi Hendrix. Okay. Number two. KHLUM SU ZHUGS PA KHLUM is the high, high, high, high honorific for NGAL. NGAL BA Which doesn't mean NGAL BA. NGAL means the womb of the mother. So KHLUM. KHLUM is a very high honorific for a woman's womb. So he entered his mother's womb. Number three. KHU BSTAN PA BSTAN PA is a very, very high honorific for SKYE BA. SKYE BA To be born. His holy body was born. He took birth. That was number three. Came out of his mom. So number two was conceived in his mother's womb. Four. ZHON NUS ROL TSE DANG Did all the stuff that Bella's doing right now. And where is she? That those two girls are doing right now. It means playing as children. The stage of playing as children. ROL TSE means to play. ZHON NUS means children. Number five. TSUL MU KHOR GYIS ROL BA means he messed around with the TSUL MOS. The princesses in the harem, in his palace. And I think it has to be stated as part of a person's life in the way that Shakespeare did it. The stages of life. That's his young, what do you call it? Naughty days. He exhibited naughty days for the benefit of us. He did do, what do you call it? He messed around with girls. He probably had beer at that time and stuff like that. Marijuana if he was around nowadays. ZHON NUS ROL TSE That's number five. Six. RAB TU CHUNG BA He gave it up. He gave up the palace. He gave up the royal life. He went out into the world to find truth. He left the pleasure, the worldly pleasure and he went looking for something higher. RAB TU CHUNG BA But to do that, you have to do the worldly pleasure and that has to be part of your evolution. RAB TU CHUNG BA DANG DE NYID DKA' BA BYAS PA Here DKA' BA is DKA' THUB. In Sanskrit, it's TAPAS. Yeah, he did hardships, spiritual hardships. Sat in the forest for years without eating much food and meditated and suffered in the elements greatly for his practice. DKA' BA BYAS PA Probably a diamond mountain or something. Without a car. Anybody have an extra car? You have to talk to Tahir. Can you raise your hand? Or Venerable Phil. If you have an extra car, just give it to them. No questions asked. It should have four wheels then. It should be running. But they are serving diamond mountain or teaching basically for free all over the world. They have no other income. Their car broke down. Their car's broke down. If anybody has an extra car, just give it to them. If you would like to. How we got to that pitch, I don't know. Because they're undergoing hardships to serve people. Number eight. BYANG CHUB SNYING PO ZHIG PA Journeyed to the heart of enlightenment. Which means what? Pretended to get enlightened. Got enlightened. That's number eight, right? Under the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya. The real name of Bodhgaya is? DOR JI BSTAN, which means Vajrasana, which means seed of the diamond. Diamonds are really important and you'll figure it out someday. Number nine. DUD LTUL BA We just had it. DUD LTUL BA Brought the demons under his control. Ten. Cancel number eight. Ten is enlightenment. Ten is got enlightened. I think number eight is went to Vajrasana, which is also sometimes called seed of the diamond. Or I mean the essence of Buddhahood or the heart of Buddhahood. Sometimes Bodhgaya is called the essence of Buddhahood. So I'm going to take number eight as he went to Bodhgaya and sat under the tree. Then he fought with the demon, right? By being nice to everybody. And then he got enlightened. Number 11. CHUNG KHOR KHOR BA Taught. We're lucky because Lord Buddha taught. He got enlightened around 30 and he died in 81. So he taught for over 50 years. And we have 4,500 teachings by him still in our canon. We still have those texts, which were just completed by our project, the 25-year project. They just completed inputting all of them. And Venerable Jigme is cataloging them. He, he, for the next 10 years. All right. CHUNG KHOR KHOR BA Number 12. SNYANGS RLAS BSTAN PA SNYANGS DE Pretended to pass away. Pretended to die. Why pretend to die? If people see their teacher sick or die, they take life more seriously. They say, oh, that's heavy. If that can happen, then I better get going. Okay, like that. All right. SANGS PA BZHIN GAM Number of a THAI YAS PAR SANGS PA BZHIN GAM THAMS CAD KU LA SNANG BA'I BRTEN YIN Thinking that, that all of this is going on inside the pores of the skin of that person, BZHIN GAM THAMS CAD KU LA SNANG BA'I BRTEN YIN is to make us sensitive to the fact that every Buddha paradise in the world is also contained within our own teacher. Okay. That's cool. All right, we're back to CHEN REG ZIG. Do you see SPYEN REG ZIG? That's CHEN REG ZIG. CHEN REG ZIG is the Buddhist embodiment of compassion. Avalokiteshvara. And the Tibetans, and we believe that the Dalai Lama is that being. CHEN REG ZIG's big mantra is OM MANI PADME HUM. And that's a long story. CHEN REG ZIG GI RGYUD means in a tantra devoted to Avalokiteshvara. GCIG DU, in one of them, PHA BU KUNG BU RE RE in each pore of your skin, SANGS RGYAS KYI ZHING DI DANG DI ZHES BYA BA They name each of the Buddha paradises in each of the pores of the skin. ZHES BYA BA DE BZHIN ZHES PA DI DANG DI ZHES BYA BA They also name the Buddha who's going through the 12 deeds in each of the pores. GSUNGS PA BRTEN DAG SANGS RGYAS THAMS CAD LA BRAL GA So you have to apply this to every single... This is the Lama phone. Don't think I'm goofing off. Supposedly only the Lama can write me on this one. There is a tantra devoted to Avalokiteshvara and in that tantra they name each of the Buddha paradises in each of the pores and which Buddha happens to be playing their drama out in each one of those. I went and looked for it. I couldn't find it. I also didn't have much time because I was sick this morning. So I didn't have much time, but I did go look. There's about 10 different scriptures that describe Buddha paradises in people's pores of their skin, but it doesn't... I couldn't find that particular one, but I think it could be done. If anybody has the time, I can show you how to do it. One of them is called SHIN TU SKYES PA CHEN PO'I DE NYID MED SUTRA SNYING PO ARIYA SURYA DGAR BA RNAMS MA BHA'I BA'I BU RLYA SUTRA And in that sutra they do describe something similar, but I don't think I found the right one yet. And I think the reason he says, in one tantra devoted to Chenrezig is because he didn't know the name either. Maybe he heard about it or something. I couldn't find it. Now we come... Are we up to GNYIS KYIS GZIGS STONG, right? GNYIS KYIS GZIGS STONG Are we? GNYIS GRIS GZIGS STONG That's misspelled. Misspelled usually means that one of our typists has typed it wrong. Because Tibetan letters can look like other Tibetan letters if the woodblock got cut or chipped or too much ink was put on the woodblock when they ran the... They smear ink on the woodblock, they put a piece of paper down and then they put a roller over it. And then sometimes it's just a blob of ink there. And the typists are required to type what they see even if it doesn't make sense to them rather than correcting it on the fly which can be a disaster for people who can't read those books. So they're just required, if they know it's crazy, they're still supposed to type it, what they see. Like the block is split or... The blocks for the tengyur that we just finished are 300 years old. So there can be 400 years old. So there can be a lot of problems with the wood. So anyway, it should be GNYIS GZIGS, C-H-I-G rather than T-S-I-G. GNYIS GZIGS STONG means 21,000. And that's how many pores of your skin are filled with arhats. In the original text, it says the 21,000. MANG ZIG MOD PA LAS Hey, this is just meant to mean a zillion. DRANG NGES PA CHEN DU MDZAD PA MIN Don't think it's exactly that number. It's like when you say a zillion, don't try to figure out how many zeros that is. It just means a lot. A lot of them. LHAG PA YAS LA DE'I NGO BZHIN BYAS SHES SO YIN LA CHOS GRO BO GCIGS In the right hand of your Lama, you can also see it as the ten fierce angels. So in Buddhism, there are 10 or 11 fierce angels who are like protectors of the Dharma, stuff like that. So they're like very tough angels. We have pictures of them. We had pictures of them in the temples where I was trained and visitors would come and they'd say, why do you keep these grotesque images? One looks just like, is it Bosch? Hieronymus Bosch. They look terrible. They look really terrible. And they say, why do you put this on your altars? These terrible pictures. It always reminds me of the Bible. There's a place in the Bible where, I believe it's where Jesus confronts some demons and turns them into pigs and drives them off a cliff. And there's a very, I believe it's there, but they accuse, they call him a devil. They perceive Jesus as a devil because he's ultimate goodness. And evil perceives goodness as a devil. When you want to sleep in and your friends come over to do yoga, as planned, at 9.30 or something, you perceive them as irritating. But really they're the good guys. But your laziness makes you perceive them as devils. It's like that. These fierce deities have grotesque forms because that's how they look to evil. But it's not how they look to themselves or to others. They're called GAR CHOG GI LHA, good guy deities. Deities on the good guy side. Anyway, their right hand is 10 different fierce deities. I thought you'd like to know their names. I have their colors and their names and I'm not going to go into a big deal. Just be aware that these are very powerful. They're like Iron Man. They're just like really super deities. Number one, SHIN RJE SHING RNGON PO In Sanskrit, YAMARI, YAMARI, YAMARI, which means the Lord of Death, in a blue color. That's a long story. The root of the word is YAMA, as in YAMA and NYAMA in the Yoga Sutra. That's a long story. Yeah, we'll do that later sometime. YAMA means a twin. Gemini comes from the root YAMA. The GEMMA in Gemini comes from YAMA. YAMA means a pair of anything. Originally, the root meant to control a horse because there are two reins. So the pair of reins were called the pair. The controlling pair was called YAMA. So even nowadays in the Yoga Sutra, the basic moral codes are called YAMA because you try to control your natural instincts as far as fooling around with other people's partners, etc. Okay, this is YAMA. But it means the pair. Then there was a god who had a sister who died. Somehow he was wrapped up with the light of the sun. So he decided that half the day he would not shine and that caused night in the world. So night in the world is due to the death of YAMI who was the sister of YAMA. So this is YAMA. YAMARI came to mean the Lord of Death because of that. So that's all the meanings of YAMA. NI YAMA means positively stated moral codes as opposed to the negatively stated YAMAS. ZHING RJE ZHING RNGUB PO ZHING GI MI THUB PA GAR PO White aparajita, aparajita, who defeats other beings, who defeats the bad people. Number three, THAMS CAD MAR PO HAYA GRIBA In a red color. The throat of the horse, horse throat. Number four, DU CI GYI RGYU BA RNGUB PO AMRTA KUN DAG LIN KUN DAG LIN NI AMRTA So KUN DAG LIN NI originally meant a coil. The coil when you make a ceramic pot, you use coils and then you straighten them out. That was KUN DAG LIN NI. Earrings made of coils are called KUN DAG LIN NI. So the coiled snake within your body, the inner heat came to mean KUN DAG LIN NI. And in this case, it means a, what do you call those in the ocean? Big ones. What are they called? There's huge things. They can take ships down underwater. Like a whirlpool, like a huge whirlpool. Then DU CI means AMRTA. Yeah, so it means a huge whirlpool of deathless nectar. It's a cool name. We should give it to people in refuge vows maybe. DU CI GYI RGYU BA AMRTA KUN DAG LIN NI SDUG BSNGAL TING RGA SDUG BSNGAL means Kamaraja, the lord of the desire realm. Dark blue, navy blue, TING RGA. Sixth one is YUG SNGON CHEN RNGON PO Blue angel with DANDA. What's DANDASANA? Plank pose. DANDA means a straight stick of any kind, especially a club. When Jenny holds you in DANDASANA, it feels like she's beating you with a club. Because DANDA mostly means club, not plank. Not so much plank. So YUG SNGON PO CHEN His name is NILA DANDA. NILA means sapphire color. It's a common name in India, NILA. RTOG PO CHEN RNGON PO means blue angel of power, which is MAHA BALA. MAHA BALA. You know BALA. Those of you who do TSE CHUNG, you know BALA. It means power, basically. MI YOD PAR TING KA ACHALA Unwavering. An angel called unwavering, who is dark blue. Sorry. Number nine. TSUG RTOG KHOR GYUR BYANG SRER What do you get when you mix blue and, sorry, yellow and green? Spring green or something? Yellow green? TSUG RTOG KHOR means U SH NI SHA CHAG RUNG KHOR GYUR BAR TAN It's KHOR RUNG GYUR BAR GAL PO CHAG RUNG GYUR BAR TAN King of the world. There used to be world kings. Not like presidents, but they controlled the whole world. And they did so by using CHAKRA, which means in this case, a wheel, which is described as a flying disc which can hold up to 500 soldiers. There were Chakravartins on this planet. They're called wheel-empowered kings. And the description of their wheels is very beautiful and interesting. If you're a UFO, if you're into UFOs, this is in the Abhidharma, which is 17 centuries old. And it's kind of cool. Anyway, this one is called the wheel king with the, what do you call this thing? With your hair? I don't have it. Yeah, top-notch. Number 10. DOR JE SOGS means underground diamond. BADGRA BA LTA LA And that is dark blue. GZHEL GSUM CHAGS GRUG In the text I was referring to, it said they have three faces and six arms. And they are always KUPA. They are YUL. They're always embracing their own partner, spiritual partner. So anyway, where are those 10 guys? Yeah, your Lama's right hand is made of those 10 fierce deities. They could clean out a solar system. And that's just your Lama's right hand. THUG PAR SNGA We'll take a break in three minutes. THUG PAR SNGA In the Lama's heart, in your teacher's heart, are five separate Buddhas. Five separate enlightened beings. These are five new ones. Five different ones. Number one. CHE BA The big one is MI GYUR PA. AK SHOB YOD Who relates to the overcoming anger. Mastering patience. According to Buddhism, there's only one way to eradicate anger from the human heart. And that's by understanding that the people you're angry at were created by you. And there is no other way. Every other way is temporary and it will fail. If the other person gets aggressive enough, you will lose your patience. If you understand they're coming from you, you can never lose your patience. That's limitless. But every other form of patience has a limit. If I can't get gasoline for a day, I'll be nice in the lines. If I can't get it for a week, I can still be nice in the line. But if I have to live without gas for a month, then I'll fight in the lines. I did it in India. What do you call it? The kerosene truck came once a week. And I was told by my friends, you get there early and you fight. You fight to the front of the line. It doesn't matter. Don't worry. If you don't get it, you won't get any kerosene and you won't eat. Because you cook on a little tiny stove. The first week I'm like, I'm an American, we don't do that. So I didn't get any kerosene. I was at the back of the line. I waited for three hours. I didn't get any kerosene. Second week, I'm like gently pushing up because I'm like a foot and a half taller than every other... Third week, I'm like beating these old ladies with saris. Patience will always break down unless it's based on the perception that the thing you're impatient at is coming from you. Because then you don't have to fight with them, you just stop being angry yourself and then they change. DE'I THUGAR So at the heart of the Lama is Mikyapa who represents that kind of patience. In that being's heart is Thubuang. Muneshvara. Who's that? Lord Buddha. The historical Buddha. I keep wanting to say historical, but it's not true. DE'I THUGAR In that Buddha's heart is Dorje Chang. LHAG RJE BDAG The form which the Buddha takes to teach tantra. By the way, just to anticipate something that's coming after the break because I want you to stay after the break. He's going to give a long disclaimer. What do you guess it is? No. He says, look, if this is all too much for you to visualize, just forget it. Just have your nice Lama there with a nice smile. It's okay. Think of them as a special person. You don't have to visualize the hundred deities and their body and all that. I personally suggest you pick one deity and focus on that for a while. Then when you get kind of, you want to change your pace and change to another deity. Then they sort of accumulate. Probably in a thousand years you can picture all of them. MI SKYES PA'I BDUN DU In front of Akshobhya, GSHEL BCUG GI TSUL means facing him as a partner, is Mama Ki, who we had already. And then MI SKYES PA'I KU RGYAB means behind Akshobhya, where? In your teacher's heart, is Jampel. Yeah, Manjushri. Facing that being. Not facing away from that being, but facing. So they're facing the same direction as the main person, which is Akshobhya. They're all facing the same direction, except for Mama Ki, who's embraced him. GSHEL BCUG BCUG means that's how you should put them there. So let's take a break there.
