[Speaker 1]
All right, here we go. GUS LAS CHOS PA'I UR DZER MEANS UR DZER means what? That's UR DZEL.

Yeah, UR DZER just means rays of light, okay, UR DZER. GUS LAS CHOS PA'I means they are, what do you call it? Emanating or a little faster than that.

Radiating is good, yeah, I like that. Who said radiating? Yeah, I like that.

Their body, your teacher's body is emanating light rays and on the GNAS, so be careful with GNAS. If you look it up, you'll never find it because it's GNAS with the locative, right? So S-N-E plus an R.

So it means at the tip of the rays of light. This is called a GNAS. It's probably related to SNA, which means nose, okay?

At the tip of the rays of light is a CHOG KYONG. CHOG KYONG means, say again? Close.

CHOG KYONG is Dharmapala means Dharma Protector. And then CHOG KYONG means Direction Protector. They like are guardians of the directions, okay?

They're called guardians of the directions. There's a controversy among the Tibetan community nowadays about a Dharmapala, about one of the thousands of Dharma Protectors. His Highness asked his disciples not to follow this practice because it had been abused by a few people who interpreted it as harming other traditions in Tibet.

So he asked everybody not to do it, which a Lama has a right to do in my mind. And then some of them said, well, we learned it from your teacher, Atriyajar Rinpoche, who's there. And so there's a big controversy.

It's gone on for, I don't know, 15 years or something. So just be aware when I talk about a Dharma Protector, I'm not talking about that one. I don't follow that practice.

I've never been trained in that practice. And I think the whole controversy is unfortunate and they should just work it out. But in the meantime, I don't have anything to do with it.

When I mention a CHOG KYONG in a text, it's never that one, okay? Because that one is recent and it doesn't happen to be in this text. So CHOG KYONG means a guardian of a direction.

SOG means et cetera. GROL PA NA TSOG GROL This GROL PA is GROL KU, means avatars. I love that movie Avatar.

I really liked it. I really, really, I cried through the whole thing, especially when she breaks into the trailer. But anyway, if we could make a movie like that.

But that avatar thing is so beautiful. So to send out, what do you call it? Clones of yourself that look like different things, like a dog to someone who needs companionship is a very common emanation, okay?

And I think a very good one. So a llama's body is sending out. And in the text before, they said it was like Grand Central Station, right?

Like, oh, it's time to bring this emanation back. They don't need a dog, they need a cat now. Bring out, send out a cat.

So you see, there are emanations coming and going through the body of the lama. So those are protector deities who protect the dharma and things like that. There are global battles being fought on a level that no one's aware of.

Most people are never aware of, between the forces of good and evil. If some kind of, in the Tibetan, the word is to stick your head up. If someone sticks their head up, the demons come.

If you just watch TV and overeat, they leave you alone because you're already where they want you. But if you try to do your meditation, if you try to do your yoga, if you try to help a lot of people, then forces will come. You attract them.

Karmically, you attract them. So then there are these beings who help you out, like angels who, they kind of deflect problems from the bad guys, okay? There are such forces going on around us all the time.

We're not aware of it. We're blissfully unaware of it. But Avalokiteshvara himself, if you see pictures of him in his later life, he became very obese.

And there's a tradition in our lineage that says he battled with a spirit and he survived, but it damaged his body. So there are such things. And it's nice to have some people working on your side.

So that's what, now we're talking about spiritual protection. NIR BYIN means, NIR BYIN in Sanskrit is Yaksha, which means like a slightly, it's like an imp, imp, evil fairy. Something like that, like a, what do you call those guys?

Leprechaun, bad guy leprechaun. That's a Yaksha, okay? And Tsangwapa is like a very powerful worldly being, spirit being.

So you're talking about medium to powerful worldly spirits who are negative. ZHAB OG TU BSTAN DU GSOL TU YOD PAR BSAM Sometimes you will see old Tibetan or Indian paintings where these beings are underfoot. They are being trodden underfoot by the Lama or by the angel.

And that just represents that they have overcome those forces. In the Vajrayogini Tantra, for example, she is trampling a woman on her breasts and that means that she has overcome desire, negative types of desire. The kind of desire where you would steal someone's partner or you would eat three, what do you call it?

Tubes of Pringles, but just tube them. I think there should be a new verb. We do it on tour when we're really busy and tired and we can't think straight.

It's like, and it goes, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. That's called tubing a tube of Pringles. Yeah, Scott laughed because we did it, right?

You saw the pizza that disappeared. We were supposed to catch a train from Moscow to Petersburg. Eight hours later, we're in the airport trying to get a last minute flight and we ran to the plane.

And half of us made it and half of us didn't. And the half that made it on the plane caused some problems and stalled the plane. Okay.

And everybody made it. So, GLA BCAM PO RNAMS ZHES POG TU BSTAN TSUL KHRIG Okay, so they are being trodden underfoot. That whole section there is about how do you deal with negative spirits, right?

And I think normally it's good humor is what negative spirits hate the most and damages the most. In the throes of a very bad event or something, if you can keep your good humor, you can really overcome things. The retreatants, should I tell you that?

Yeah, why not? I can't keep anything to myself. The retreatants went up on the highest mountain there where there's a dome light and they set up golf tees and they got to a golf club and they wrote mantras on golf balls.

And they're hitting them off into the valley. And this is not at the expense of the sponsors, okay? Like that was funded separately.

And then somebody decided it would be cool to try on a trampoline. But, you know, so to see Earl like doing a flip, because he missed the ball on the trampoline. And it just broke the whole tension in the retreat valley by doing something goofy.

And goodheartedly goofy is the best Dharma protector, I think. ,DI DAG MIG PA SEL THEP MIN, Okay, here comes the disclaimer. The small print, okay?

,DI DAG MIG PA SEL THEP MIN, If you are unable to sustain such a complicated visualization in your meditation, ,GCIG LTAR YANG, Whatever you do, ,NGA'I NGOR, NGA'I NGOR means, we spoke about it before. It's NGA'I NGOR LA, NGA'I NGOR LA as NGA'I NGOR. NGA'I NGOR means how you take it, okay?

You're visualizing your Lama, but how you take it. In Tibetan, it's how you take it to your surface. NGOR means surface of a wall.

NGA'I means how you perceive it. So how you, you should visualize your teacher, but how you take it, how you interpret it almost. It should, you have to maintain, you have to sustain the feeling and not the picture, okay?

You must sustain the feeling, if not the picture, okay? What's the picture? My Lama's PHUNG KHAMS RGYAS BYAS SOGS, the different parts of my Lama's mind and body, are DE SHES RIGS NA, five Buddhas, YAB YAM SHI MTHO.

They are the peaceful and wrathful male and female partner deities. SOGS NGOS YIN, say NGOS YIN. NGOS YIN.

He or she is the real thing. She's the real thing. So NGOS YIN, if you can't sustain the picture, at least sustain the feeling.

My teacher is the Buddha, okay? My teacher is the Buddha, okay? If you maintain that feeling, you will have a good relationship with your teacher.

It doesn't mean blind subservience, okay? As we have seen. In Buddhism, you are required to evaluate what your teacher does and says, and you are required to object if it's something immoral or something harmful.

Even then, you're required to think that they are testing you, okay? So maintain that vision. But in Buddhism, you are supposed to question a Lama's behavior if you feel it's improper, and you're required to distance yourself from them if you feel it is improper.

All the while thinking that it must be some special lesson for me, like that. So you maintain the feeling that they are special, and then everything will be cool, and you will have a pleasant life. It's a nice way to think about somebody.

And of course, in the Buddhist tradition, you spend up to years evaluating that person before you take them as a teacher. Once you take them as a teacher, you make certain commitment to them. But before that, you dig into their history and everything about them.

You ask people, you investigate them carefully. It's like getting married. It's more serious than getting married.

All right, so you don't just go to a talk and you like the person and say, be my teacher. LUS SOGS YIN YANG PAS NGES SHES BRTEN NGES SHES BRTEN means, it means pull up the knowledge of certainty. It means pull up the knowledge of certainty.

But what it means is, come to believe that it's true. Come to a feeling of certainty that this person is not a human being. GNAS BYAS means very important.

What's GNAS in Sanskrit? Marma, what's to work on a crucial point? Marma hatha.

So hatha means to strike in Sanskrit. The heart chakra is called an-ah-hatha. An means not, ah means very much, hatha means struck.

Why would the heart chakra be called an-ah-hatha? Yeah, it's a drum that no one is beating. No one's sitting in your heart and banging on it to make it beat.

So the chakra is called an-ah-hatha. The root is han, H-A-N, which came into English as gun and it's found in ahimsa. Why did I bring that up?

What were we talking about? Oh, GNAS, marma hatha, yeah. In yoga, in yoga practice, we try to hit the inner body at special points.

Like a good yoga series is built around the chakras and it's meant to strike at the mortal, what do you call it? Huh? Say again.

It is a mortal blow. Marma hatha means, that's a great translation, mortal blow. Marma is the root of mortal.

It means if you strike there, the soldier will die for sure. If you can hit that spot, the other soldier will die. It's called marma hatha.

In yoga, it means to strike the chakra properly with a pose. Like for the muladhara chakra, it might be putting your heel, pressing your heel into that chakra properly would cause certain things in your body. Marma hatha.

So that word marma, mortal, place that you hit and you can kill a person like this. They say you can kill them like, if you know where, you can just go like that and they'll die. So marma means that.

What's the marma here? He said, that's a big marma. The feeling about your teacher.

He says, don't stress on the visualization. If you don't get the right color in his pinky finger with the fourth protected deity, don't stress. It's not the picture that's important.

It's the feeling. Oh, my lama's body is made of real angels. Real angels.

Okay, got it? Just sit in the feeling and don't stress about the visualization. And that's a lot more pleasant in a deep state of meditation.

You're just soaking in the feeling that your personal teacher, whoever it is, is not a normal human being. They were sent to take care of you. My favorite movie is a poorly done, cheap budget thing called Date with an Angel, wherein an angel is sent to take care of a guy, but she hits a bad wind front on the way down and falls in a swimming pool with a broken wing.

And the action takes place from there. But the point, throughout the movie, you see that she's taking care of him in a very sweet way. Like a wing.

Yeah. It's very beautiful, especially the end. DE RNAM RTZO'O SEMS BDEBS TSUL YIN That's how you are supposed to visualize the central figure.

What's he going to say next? That's how you visualize the central figure. Well, now there's going to be all those other guys.

I hope it doesn't take as long as the central figure. So who are all these other dudes and dudesses? Who are they?

Rinpoche would have my head if he heard me say that. But anyway. Sorry.

MED CHE KHOR SEMS BDEBS TSUL How shall we visualize the Khor? In this case, Khor means the surrounding people. The retinue.

KHOR SEMS BDEBS TSUL RTZO'O THUG PA NAS From the heart of the main figure, your teacher, comes more light. YED CHOG TSUL KHROD It radiates to the right side, which facing the picture is the left side. Remember, we're always talking from their point of view, in a picture.

CHOG TSUL KHROD So this light comes out like this. You can see it here. You see those little waves of light coming out like a mustache?

That's what he's talking about right now. These rays of light come out like this. Like a mustache.

And then they are supporting other lamas. Those rays of light. They come out and then they fan out and then they support new groups of lamas, new groups of teachers.

KHOR SEMS BDEBS TSUL RTZO'O THUG PA NAS YED CHOG TSUL KHROD Goes out to the right. TSE MO RGYA The tip fans out. RJES CHER SONG BA Gets bigger and bigger.

And then atop that, say RGYA CHEN CHOS RGYU RGYA CHEN CHOS RGYU RGYU without a B means your mental continuum, which in Sanskrit has a very sexy name. Santana. Da-da-da.

Okay. Santana is your mental continuum. Put a B on it and it changes to the lineage, your lineage, the historical lineage of any particular lineage.

RGYA CHEN CHOS means they act in wide ways. They act in, what do you call it? Broad spreading, wide spreading ways.

It's called the wide spreading lineage. This is the lineage of a bodhisattva, of bodhichitta, of a vision of a perfect world of no poverty, no sickness, no sadness, no death. That vision, bodhichitta, has been carried down through a certain lineage of lamas.

So you picture them on the light ray that goes out to the teacher's right. Now we got to do the left side of the mustache. YIN DU, DE BZHIN DU In the same manner comes the SAB MO'I LTA RGYUD.

Say SAB MO'I LTA RGYUD. Don't say SAB MO', which would mean the, what do you call on a saddle, the thing you hold on to? Yeah, pommel?

Horn. It's called, so don't mispronounce it, SAB MO'. SAB MO'I means profile.

SAB MO', LTA means worldview, RGYUD, that lineage. It means the worldview of emptiness. What does that mean?

The last person who yelled at you was empty. What does that mean? They were not not coming from you, or they were empty of coming from themselves.

They come from your seats. They don't come from anywhere else. That's emptiness.

And that's the view of emptiness. And these are the teachers who taught it on the Lama's left. Emptiness or wisdom is considered a feminine quality.

And that's usually the left. In India, it's called, the path of the feminine is called Vama Marga. Marga means path.

Vama means feminine or left. The V changed to F, the A changed to E, Fem. It became feminine.

So that says that wisdom is always feminine and that's always on the left-hand side. And then compassion is considered masculine. Which I think is the opposite of the way we see things.

I don't know. Men are considered more analytical in our culture and women more compassionate. Traditionally, it's women who have the deepest insights into reality and it's men who have an, what do you call it?

Extroverted, serve the world type of thing. RGYAL CHEN SONG BA'I DRON YON DU DE BZHIN DU BSAM MO LTAR GYUR DON DU in front of the Lama is another group but it has to be lowered, right? So you can see the Lama.

DE BZHIN DU CHUN BRAL NGOS THOB GYI LAMA Say CHUN BRAL. You know CHOS, Dharma or religious teachings. BRAL means connection.

So CHUN BRAL is a beautiful word. It means a teacher with whom you have a Dharma connection. Like you have learned spiritual things from them.

Like in the monastery, in my monastery, for example, I belong to the MEH division of Sera monastery. So we have two divisions in our monastery, Sera MEH and Sera JE. Sera MEH is superior.

We have better debaters. But once in a while, Sera JE will come up with a great Lama. And we're not actually encouraged to study with them.

There's this weird, bad green line in the monastery. We're not really supposed to go study with them. So sometimes you sneak across the line and you go to this Lama's house and you knock on the door and you say, teach me one verse of anything because I want CHUN BRAL with you.

I want to be karmically connected with you. I love you and I think you're great. Give me five minutes, anything, so I can make a karmic connection with you.

And then maybe later we can study. I don't mean to say it's that, I don't want you to think it's that serious. Of course you can go to other monasteries and learn from their teachers, but they will have a slightly different tradition.

And then it will be confusing in your own monastery. So that's another story. YIN DU DE BZHIN And I went to many monasteries and studied with different teachers.

YIN DU DE BZHIN, CHUN BRAL NGOS THOB GYI LAMA There should be a Lama with whom, the Lamas with whom you have a CHUN BRAL, you picture in front. NGOS THOB means you have gotten teachings directly from them. This NGOS means NGOS SO.

We had a NGOS earlier which meant real angel. This NGOS means direct. So you got to be careful when you're translating.

NGOS THOB GYI LAMA RGYAB DU What's RGYAB? Behind. DUN and RGYAB.

DUN and RGYAB. Behind the Lama. CHUNG SREG MTHO BA Elevated a bit higher so you can see them.

So this is supposed to be a three-dimensional picture, but they had to lower the group in front so you wouldn't lose track of the Lama. And they had to raise the group in back so you would see the guy at the bottom. The guy, the holy Lama at the bottom.

CHUNG SREG MTHO BA GYI LAMA THO BA NYAMS NAS BYIN RLABS RGYUD This is called that one going down the middle, which you can see is made of really five stacks of Lamas. Five lines of Lamas. That's called BYIN RLABS.

BYIN RLABS, did you say BYIN RLABS? RGYUD Which literally means the lineage of blessings. The lineage of blessings.

So it's clear who's in the emptiness lineage. These are people like Arya Nagarjuna, Chandrakirti, the two Kaukalas brothers, like that. Then on the right, that's clear.

The Bodhisattva lineage will be Master Shantideva and his teacher, Serlingpa Divipa, Subhana Divipa Guru, all these people. But who's in the middle, which is sort of a secret lineage? Who to put there?

There's some debate about it. So luckily, here in the afternoon, after being on your butt for like six hours, you get to hear a very complicated debate about who's in that, who's those five lines. Sorry, but not really.

DE NYAMS LEN BYIN RLABS RGYUR DGOS LUGS As far as how we actually practice the middle line of teachers, how we visualize them, DGOS LUGS, how we position them, MANG NGAGS KYI SAB NAS There are many NAS, MAR MA There are many crucial advices from the oral tradition. MANG NGAGS means oral tradition. MANG DU YOD, MANG PO There are lots of them.

There are lots of ideas about who we should put in the middle line of teachers. And what does it mean, a lineage of blessing? DE YANG YONG DRAG DOR BYED CANG YONG DRAG, you should learn.

Say YONG DRAG. YONG DRAG means the one that everybody knows about. So DRAG PA here means kirti, like in Chandrakirti or Dharmakirti.

What does the kirti mean in kirti? Famous or well-known. KHYAB DAG, what does KHYAB PA mean?

KHYAB PA Spread, spread wide. It also means in logic an implication because one thing spreads wider than another, so it implies the other. KHYAB DAG is the modern Tibetan word for advertising.

Widely DRAG PA So DRAG PA means like, what do you call? Announced or something. So here YONG DRAG is an idiom in Tibetan.

It means the one that everybody knows about. Starts with DOR BYED CANG. Who's that?

The Buddha in the appearance he takes to teach Tantra. Then it goes to somebody like DE LO. DE LO is DE LO PA, DI LO PA, DA'I LO PA.

Naropa's teacher who was a yogi, a real yoga practitioner. So this is becoming almost a yoga lineage. The middle lineage is a yoga lineage.

The two ones on the side are sort of philosophical lineages. The middle lineage becomes one more of a physical practice or tantric practice of which yoga asana is considered a high tantric practice in our lineage. DE LO PA Then NARO, which is NARO PA, who's also mentioned in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

So these are gurus who are shared between the Hindu and the Buddhist tradition. If you do yoga in a normal American yoga studio, most often it came from a Hindu tradition, but that came from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika which has a shared lineage. So our tantric lamas are of the same lineage as Master Iyengar or Sri Patabhi Joyce or people like that, which is beautiful.

We were one family before the Mughals took over India and half our family ran to Tibet. But up to that point, 800 AD, we were one family. Then we got separated.

I like to think we're coming back together. DE LO PA, NARO PA, Dombipa, Dombipa's a famous yogi. I keep trying to find this story.

There's two stories about him, but one got mixed up with a lama named Virupa. That's a long story. They both involved drinking large amounts of beer.

I better explain that. So they were trying to, I don't know. They transform alcohol in the way that it's transformed in the mass or communion in a Christian church.

So they will take small amounts of alcohol in rituals in the way that alcohol is used in a mass. A big yogi is supposedly capable of drinking a whole cup or something. So there are stories about Dombipa and Virupa where they went to a bar and drank all the liquor just because it was holy to them and it didn't affect them.

We are not at that stage. No, really, some people thought they were and they got messed up. We are not at that stage.

These are high, high beings who exist once in a couple centuries. Anyway, of course, he got a high tab. So the bartender was hassling him.

He said, you got to pay the tab. He said, I'll pay it when the sun sets today, I'll pay it. So the bartender kept giving him more.

Then he took a dagger and pinned the sun to the sky and kept drinking. Finally, all the farmers in that district of Tibet, India asked him to unpin the sun because it was ruining the crops. So he did.

That's one story. There's another beautiful story of how he, and again, there's some different lamas I confused in historically, but there's a beautiful story of how one took a partner and was criticized for it. And then in the end was, what do you call it?

Everybody decided he was great.

[Speaker 2]
I don't know, what's that called?

[Speaker 1]
Vindicated, yeah, okay. But that's another story. That's Dombipa.

Joel means Lord Atisha who helped bring Buddhism to Tibet and who was the opposite and who actually disciplined some of those yogis. He was very traditional and strict. And both are lineage lamas.

So we have to understand that both are. There's a time for both, right? JO SOGS DANG RJE SGRUB GANGS PAS Which is, I believe, Pabongka Rinpoche's lama.

SABS RGYAS KYI RGYUD PA NYID LA He said, if you think about it, both of the other two lineages on the left and right, which are, by the way, we got 15 more minutes, so hang in there. I know it's long, but to get this time together is extremely difficult and rare. Yeah, one is compassion and one is understanding.

He said, if you think about it, compassion and wisdom has been passed down in blessings. So how can you say that the middle lineage is called the lineage of blessings? So I think, he said, you should just mush the two left and right lineages into the middle.

That was his position. And LAMA GCIG NAS GCIG TU BYING RGYAS It's an unbroken stream, isn't it? MA NYAM BAR means it has never been broken.

LAMA GCIG NAS GCIG LAMA GCIG NAS GCIG From one lama to another. YOD PA'I DE LAS LOGS SU MI DGOS PAR DE LAS LOGS SU MI So who needs another lineage? You got these two.

They are a blessing. They are a chain of blessings. Why do you need another one?

ZHES ZHES is the opposite of SER in reporting a position. NYING PO SER means they claim. So when you say that at the end of a statement by some lama, you're saying, I don't really buy it.

When the lama says ZHES, it means he took that position. He gloriously took that position. Which means he thinks it's pretty good, but he has to because that's his lama.

Okay, MI DGOS PAR ZHES GANG DO LO SANG SGOM CHUNG I looked him up. 1672, 1749. Came from, unfortunately, Sarah J.

Key. I'm just joking, okay? I don't want it on the internet that Geshe Michael spoke bad about Sarah J.

and said they weren't good debaters. Okay, Sarah J. Key.

SANG DE'I JIGS SUM LA GYIS RGYUD PA LA ZHES His position, his holy position, was that it represents three different lineages. SANG, DE, and JIGS. What are those?

SANG is an abbreviation for SANGS PA GDUG PA DGOS YAS SU MA BYA which we've been talking about for a couple of days now. DE is? DE CHOG SANGS PA GDUG, Chakrasambhara tradition.

And JIGS is JIGS CHE or YAMANTIKA or BHAYANUGA. Okay, those three tantric lineages should be in the middle. Okay, that was his position.

And I always get confused. I'm always forgetting, like who's supposed to be in the middle? Well, that's why I'm confused because they were confused.

All right. 15 more minutes, hang in there. JE SNGA BA'ANG BYAMS PA which I believe is Purvuchok.

Purvuchok lived 1682, 1762. I believe he was one of the tutors of the Dalai Lama of his time. And he is a great writer of logic.

So when Nyingpo teaches you logic, he's often referring to Purvuchok. Lama YONGS DZIN RIN PO'I PHYIR means a tutor, usually of the Dalai Lama. These two Lamas, they said that the middle lineage was the, say KADAM, TIG LAS, CHU GDUG, KADAM, TIG LAS, CHU GDUG.

CHU GDUG means 16. TIG LAS means a drop, right? A drop of prana.

A BIN DU, a drop of... In yoga, it's very important, TIG LAS, especially the one at your heart. Then there's a practice.

Jenny mentioned today, when was that? Yesterday? The Russian dolls or the eggs, right?

Fabergé eggs. One inside the other. So there's a practice where you visualize, you keep going, you visualize a Lama in your Lama's heart and then you go, you drill down to the Lama in his heart and then you drill down to the Lama in their heart and you drill down 16 levels.

His Holiness gave this initiation in Bodhgaya when we were there in 1998 or something. I don't remember. No, at the Millennium.

Yeah, he gave it on the eve of the Millennium. Some of us were there. He gave that transmission.

Anyway, some people say it's that lineage. GANG LDAN GNYEN GYI GYI RGYUD PA GNYIS GANG LDAN GNYEN GYI means the oral transmission of the Gelugpa lineage, our own lineage, the Dalai Lama's lineage. Some people say it's those two lineages in the middle.

SOWAR SOWAR Mainly. In debating, SOWAR is a very delicate word. You don't say, this is always true.

You say SOWAR most of the time. Then that causes, if you want to cover your rear end in a debate, you say SOWAR. Then the guy might rip you up for saying SOWAR when it's always true.

But that's another problem. DE DAG GYUR CIG TU DGOS TSUL SKYE MA NGAGS SEMS NAS BDAG GIS BLA MA'I GZHAN DE DAG GYUR CIG TU DGOS TSUL A way in which we can sort of incorporate all these opinions into a single flow. GYUR means, GYUR CIG means a single flow.

DGOS TSUL KYI MA NGAGS SEMS NAS Profound NAS BLA MA, crucial concept. BDAG GIS BLA MA My own teacher. ZHAL ZHES ZHAL ZHES means, ZHES means mouth, honorific.

ZHES means to know. What does ZHAL ZHES mean? It's an oral tradition that hasn't been written down.

ZHAL ZHES means you must learn it from your Lama's lips. ZHAL ZHES NGES RGYUD means a heard tradition, meaning oral. NGES RGYUD KYI MA NGAGS SKYE PAR CAN Very special private advices from my own teacher, he says.

Who's he? Pabongka Rinpoche. SKYE PAR CAN BAS SKYOD MED PAR ZHUGS NA I'm going to teach you without any, Scott might know the word, Nimbo might know the word.

BAS SKYOD We mention it when I teach yoga on the DCI tours. Thank you. Professional jealousy.

BAS SKYOD is a very unique Tibetan word. I don't think there's any such word in English. You have to use a phrase in English.

But BAS SKYOD means jealousy between yoga teachers, jealousy between Dharma teachers. Geshe Michael's jealousy of anybody else who ever tries to teach anything is called BAS SKYOD. There's a word for it, which I find the word disgusting.

The existence of the word is a sad thing. In Buddhism, they describe worlds in which certain words don't exist because they don't need them anymore, like death. The fact that BAS SKYOD exists in our world, or it's necessary to have a word for it, it's kind of sad.

Where teachers are like jockeying to look better than the other teacher and stuff like that. So BAS SKYOD. He says BAS SKYOD MED.

MED PAR means I'm not going to hold anything back. I know a big secret and I'm going to share it with everybody. I mean, it could make me the big Lama, but I'm just going to give it to everybody.

BAS SKYOD MED PAR means I'm not holding anything back. Without holding anything back, SHU NA means I'm going to tell you. I'm going to share it with you.

A new way, or his Lama's personal advice is about how to visualize the middle lineage Lamas. I like it. So if you ever want to know how BAS SKYOD is spelled, it's very rare in a scripture.

So you can see it there, BAS SKYOD. DE YANG U SOS DOR BYED CHA MA RTOG PA BYED TSUN BYAM YANG NAS RANG GI LAM MA LA THUGS KYI BAR BYAM YANG GI RNAM PAR THOG TSEG In the middle, there's five lines of Lamas coming down like this. Those are historical lineages.

If you ask me where's the earlier ones and the later ones, I don't remember. Either at the bottom or the top. There are five lines of Lamas coming down.

I believe the uppermost would be the oldest. U SOS in the middle is the lineage of BYED TSUN BYAM YANG. Coming back, probably a wisdom lineage from Manjushri.

You don't have to include Dorje Changre as the beginner, Vajradhara. You don't have to do that. BYAM YANG RANG GI LAM MA LA THUGS KYI BAR DU Up to your own root Lama.

Up to your own teacher. It's BYAM YANG GI RNAM PAR. You picture them as Manjushri.

What's Manjushri look like? What's the big deal about Manjushri? A sword in their hand.

Wisdom. The ability to cut through the appearance that your irritating aspects of your partner are coming from them. Cut through it and see where it's really coming from.

BYAM YANG RANG GI LAM MA LA THUGS KYI BAR DU BYAM YANG GI RNAM PAR THOGS BSAD means they are stacked. The Lamas are stacked in a, what do you call it? Pringle formation.

Okay. Good translation. DE YESUS DE YESUS on their right is PHA RGYUD.

Which means, what's Papa and Mama? Yeah, mother and father. I'll tell you a beautiful story which I told you a hundred times.

But anyway, I showed up in Dharamsala. I didn't know anything. I ran into a really good reincarnated Lama named Tenzin Tinle who's in the Vajrayogini lineage.

And I don't know, he took a liking to me. So I tried to get into the Shantideva class. And they said, to get into the Shantideva class, you have to know Tibetan.

And you have to take an exam. And I just got there. I didn't know anything.

So he said, just show up at the exam. We'll take care of it. I'd like to show up.

Here's this panel of Lamas. He's the only one that spoke English. And he's like, okay, translate the following words.

Papa, father. Mama, mother. You pass.

Like that's the only words in Tibetan that are similar to English. So pa gyu means father tantras, which are, in this case, sang du, guhyasamaja, and jik che. By the way, that's why I learned Shantideva, which is lucky for us, right?

And then jik che, bhaya rava. Bhaya rava, B-H changed to F in English. A-I changed to E-A.

Fear, the fearful deity, bhaya rava. jik che kyi la du nyi, these two, so so ne tog tse. So you can, separately, those two tantric lineages.

By the way, in Tibetan tradition, you're not allowed to point at a llama or a picture. You're supposed to go, okay? So I took a taxi ride in New York not too long ago and the driver kept stopping and going to the other traffic.

And I'm like, who is this guy? And I said, because he looked Spanish to me, I said, where are you from? He said, Tibet.

Okay, anyway, par gyu means, on the right, you can see two lines off center, right? To the right. So those are the Yamantaka lineage and the Guhyasamaja lineage, two tantric lineages.

So now we've accounted for three of the five lines, stacks. So so ne tog tse, they are stacked separately. Four more minutes, hang in there.

YIN DU MA RGYUD, on the left are the MA RGYUD. MA MA, the mother tantric lineage. He states one, DE CHOG.

CAKRAS SAMBARA. CAKRAS SAMBARA tantra has how many chapters? Is it 51?

I think it's 51. The last chapter is all about Vajrayogini. And our principal practice, which came shut down through the Dalai Lama's teacher, is the Vajrayogini practice.

Which is extremely beautiful and moving and heartwarming. I saw somebody online was dissing it as some kind of terrible, horrible tantric thing. It's like calling Snow White a demon or something.

Anyway, THIG LAS CHUG RDUG GI LA RGYUD And the lineage of the 16 drops of the Kadamba, which we already talked about. So those are the two lineages on the left, of the main Lama's left. So now we've accounted for all five Pringle stacks of Lamas.

LAMA SO SOGS NA'I THOB TSE REG BYED THOB TSE SNGAR BSAM DAG PA YIN So you should come out with five total stacks, which we do. Yay. Okay.

DE DANG CHONG DAG BYAS SHES RAB RGYAL TSOGS GSUM BZIN DU'ANG NYID If you refer to the GSUM BZIN, GSUM BZIN means Notes Taken by a Disciple of a High Lama, of SHES RAB RGYAL TSOGS. I'm not totally sure, but I believe that's also the source of one of the most beautiful accounts of how the Buddha became enlightened with his partner. Our historical Buddha got enlightened with his partner.

And I believe they constitute some of the secret books of Dume Tantric College, which I went and asked for so we could preserve them and typed them in and they said, no. But we have a data entry center of Tibetan women in the shadow of the walls of Dume Tantric College. So somebody went over there and sweet-talked them out of them and we have them.

Now they're in the database. BDAG DUNG MED NGAG GZHAN YANG YOD There's lots of more. Okay, we're going to wrap up.

Okay, last sentence. There's lots more we could say about these lineage Lamas that you've been picturing. YOD GZHAN BYAS Where do you find the details of who to put in those pictures?

Who are you supposed to visualize? You could go to the Kadam Legbam, which is like the annals of the Kadampa sect. Kadampa sect were the earliest Tibetan Buddhists of our lineage.

You are very similar to them. The people in this room are very similar to them. One Lama from Tibet has used that as the name of their group.

Kadampa? New Kadampas. It's a nice name.

I don't know much about them and I'm not involved with them, but I think it's a nice name. It was a nice choice of names. It's pioneer Buddhists.

Okay, Kadampa. You can go to the Kadampa Annals, which are a thousand years old. You could go to GZHAN RNAMS KA'I GDOR BYED GSUNGS LA SPYOD You could go to GZHAN RNAMS KA'I GDOR BYED this Lama's Lama Chodpa.

So be aware there are many Lama Chodpas. There's not just one. We do the ritual of Lama Chodpa from, written by whom?

Yeah, the first pension Lama. But there are other ones. TSE LING YONG DZIN RIN PO CHE TSE LING YONG DZIN RIN PO CHE was a Lama who was a teacher of one of the Dalai Lamas.

He wrote LA SPYOD PHYI. He wrote a commentary on the traditional Lama Chodpa. And then he wrote LA RGYUD NAM THAR.

Say LA RGYUD NAM THAR. The full name is LAM RIM LAMA RGYUD PA'I NAM THAR. LAM RIM LAMA RGYUD PA'I NAM THAR.

LAM RIM is LAM RIM. Lama is Lama. RGYUD PA means lineage.

NAM THAR means biographies. And it's a fantastic text. It's very, very important to translate.

I think parts of it have been translated by Jan Willis, I think, a few of the stories. But there are many, many. It's two volumes.

And it's all the great Lamas of the Lam Rim. And it's beautiful. I'm going to give you some excerpts later when we get to beautiful stories of angels appearing to Lamas.

Anyway, it's never been translated. It'd be nice to translate it. GSUNGS LA BYAS CI DANG LAMA RGYUD PA'I NAM THAR NGAR ZHUGS PA'I RJES SHES RAB RGYAL TSUL ZIN And the notes that I already referred to by SHES RAB RGYAL TSUL.

SOGS NAS YOD PA DE DAG ZIGS DGOS Say DE DAG, ZIGS, DGOS. That's a cop-out. It's like, you go read them.

ZIGS is honorific of go look, as in Chenrey. ZIGS, ZIGS. So he's kind of like, if you want the details, go read those books.

If you want to know where I got all this stuff, go read all those books. Last sentence. Did I say that already?

We will finish here the Lamas, the visualization of them. The whole upper part of the thing is done in the next sentence. KHA DAM SA NYID KYI LAMA DGOS LUGS LA'ANG MED NA'ANG GI KHYAD PAR BYED BA ZHIG YOD There is also a very profound oral instruction on how to add the Kadampa Lamas here.

Kadampa is divided into two, the old Kadampas and the new Kadampas. Old Kadampa means basically from Lord Atisha up to Jetsel Kappa in the 15th century. And then from him up to now, up to our Lama, Khen Rinpoche, would be new Kadampas.

If you want to know how to visualize them or add them to this visualization, there is a profound oral instruction, which means I'm not going to tell you. So we're done with the Lamas on the upper half from the mustache on up. And then next we have to do the people on the lotus petals in front of the Lama.

We're going to have to work on that. After dinner. I think Aaron, because Nick started it.
