[Speaker 1] Welcome back to the class for learning how to pronounce Tibetan correctly and how to write out especially good pronunciation for prayers that you want people to recite or things like that and especially we are distinguishing between transcription and pronunciation which most people seem to have a problem with. I'd say almost everybody. So here we go on some more real examples from a real scripture called the Giorgia and I'd like to do this one okay so this is called una okay say una okay you you know this word from the word for Madhyamika or the middle way what is that that's uma without the s okay so uma without that means middle way Madhyamika and then una means on his head so this u spelling this way means on the head on the head okay so the thing to learn here is that although the transcription is the busna the pronunciation is una and we spoke about it yesterday so be as a second syllable changes to wa with a naro it becomes wo but with a shabgyu it becomes bu with a dengu becomes be with a giku it becomes be but but with two vowels o and and the and the innate vowel ah it becomes wo and wa okay so this this is u rather than bu okay all right you'll learn so una so and we said yesterday that most English speakers would have problem if you just put ooh you there so we suggested what yeah so let's do we'll do ooh nah okay and that'll be the pronunciation and that's just another example of a common mistake in pronouncing okay people might put buna or something like that all right we have time for another example here I'd like to do this one give me the transcription B B Z H U G S space PA okay and that's chupa so in Tibetan there's a high sha and there's a low sha they are not there's no Z in Tibetan there's no Z H in Tibetan it's just for spelling in Roman letters it's not that the sound is done they only had one asked to use in English so for chupa chupa they said Z H chupa meaning juniper tree would have been SHU G okay high tone should say shock sure sure sure so when they use a Z it just means low tone it doesn't mean it's a Z yeah okay like llama Zopa okay that's a mistake okay so chupa chupa tell me now the pronunciation spell the pronunciation for me SH you K P no space no space because it's two parts of one word burn that into your head two parts of one word no space between them in the pronunciation even though there is a space in the trance transcription okay so say chupa chupa how do we indicate to our English reader that this is the low tone Shah rather than the high tone shot we don't you cannot they don't have low shots in English they don't have high shots in English in the pronunciation you let it go this is the closest that a normal English speaker can get and that's what pronunciations all about it will it be precise no will it be distinguished from chupa meaning juniper no is it the closest that a normal English speaker can get to chupa yes that's what pronunciations all about as close as you can get a normal English speaker to the Tibetan sound it will not be precise Tibetan it cannot be if you want that you transcribe it and then you teach the person for a year Tibetan pronunciation okay and that's the difference between transliteration and pronunciation we'll continue again with two more examples in the next video thank you
