[Speaker 1] So, we're supposed to have two classes today, one's supposed to start now, and go to 3.45, and we're supposed to do Maitreya, okay? And then, 4 o'clock to 5.15, we're supposed to have debating. So, what I have an idea, my ideas are dangerous, in the monastery, when you debate, first half, one-on-one, second half, you get in small groups and you debate together, okay? So, what I'd like to show Mr. Wu, is a group debate, small group debates. So, what I'd like to do is have maybe, let's see, how many people here, Tim? Tim's not here. Michael, do you know how many here? Okay, so... Let's have... Let's have ten groups, okay? We'll have ten groups, okay? Ten debate groups, and I suggest you group with your own language, okay? Now, I think it's cool if we have Chinese debate, Russian debate, Spanish debate, German debate, okay? So, you can group with your own language, okay? Like groups of ten, okay? Then, each group has to create a debate, okay? And, in the monastery, they take all the subjects, and they write them down, and they put them in a hat, and everybody close your eyes, and your group will choose one, okay? And, then your group has to design a debate based on that subject. So, some people might get form bodies, rupa kayas, some people might get dharmakaya, some people might get emptiness body, some people might get dharmajewel, okay? So, we'll do ten subjects for ten groups, then you all debate like, I don't know, three minutes or something, okay? So, you will prepare your own debate, okay? Then, each group should have at least two or three people who are coming to Kamalashila, because Mr. Wu is only coming to Kamalashila, so, okay? So, the debate masters, can I say Adam and Nick? You okay with that? You guys, you okay? So, you guys gonna have to walk around and make sure everybody has a coherent debate, and that they can do it in a certain amount of time, and that they are including everybody in the group, okay? Like, everyone asks a different question or something like that, okay? And, if the Russians do it in Russian, and the Germans do it in German, and the Mexicans do it in Spanish with the Argentinians, I think it would be cool, okay? So, we'll do it that way. So, first we need a longer Qi Xin, okay, our Qi Xin is not big enough for ten groups. So, I'm gonna do some more Qi Xin with you for the next hour and a half, something, and then we'll start to organize our groups. Okay, here we go. What time is that? Yeah, yeah, we can go to like, what time is it now? Let's go to about three, and three something, and then we'll start to break into our groups, okay? And I'll still give you your 15-minute break, don't worry. Okay, in between. At 3.30, we're gonna ask the kitchen people to come over here. You guys donated, guess how much? 5,000. Right? 4,000 something, and then we'll give it to them, and we'll see if we can knock the new plaster off the walls with clapping for them, okay? Maybe have an inspiring song ready Scott, in the middle of the clapping, like something heroic, okay, all right. What's that? What's text in my hand? That's the wrong one. Yeah, here's a cheat sheet. Okay, so, we have a definition for the emanation body, which is what? Who can tell me? DANG MED PA Emanation body. Yeah, yeah, it's the half of the form body, which doesn't have those five certainties, okay? I don't know if I like that definition, but it's okay. Then... Well, that's the description, but not the definition. So, in Buddhism we have to discriminate between description and definition. What's the definition of paradise body? Yeah, the half of the form body that has the five qualities. Who can tell me one quality? One definite thing. Huh? What did you say Brigitte? Yeah, only surrounded by Arya Bodhisattvas, and all those then has the... Yeah, great, has the...great, you said it just perfectly, has the 32 major signs and the 80 minor marks, which you are going to learn during Kamalashiyana. Because you have to find out what you...what's okay, and what needs correction. Third one? Yeah, meaning? Yeah, they will stay. They won't pretend to leave until the samsara is empty. Two more. [Speaker 2] I didn't hear. [Speaker 1] They only stay in the Oakmane heaven, Akanishta heaven, yeah. Below the weather, good. And they only teach... Mahayana Dharma. All right, good. See, debating you learn more. In the Dharma class you don't learn much, okay. But it's fun. So, we got definitions for... emanation body and paradise body. Why don't we go and look up the definition of the wisdom body, okay? My teacher used to say, nod your head so I know you're awake. Let's go look up the definition of wisdom body. Okay. Okay. Yeshe Chukwu. So, this is how you use the online library. Yeshe Chukwu. Then what am I going to put here? Adam? Nick? What goes in this...huh? Almost, you're missing one part. Yeshe Chukwu... What are we looking for? The definition. Tsengyi. All right. Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you said denyi. Okay, Yeshe Chukwu Tsengyi. So, those of you who used to use in Gopher, where are we going to look? Yeah, we're only looking into this...the ceremony...the superior textbooks. I put it in here. Okay, ready? Here we go. One, two, three... That's how fast it is. Okay. Is that a good definition Adam? No, because it says ser-na, ser-na. Ser-na means... not...we can't use that one, that's a defective one. Okay, let's go to the next one. Why is this a good one? Because...because of this mark, those of you who are learning Tibetan, okay? This...I don't know, it's a kind of shé. It's a kind of pung shé, it's a kind of Tibetan... punctuation mark, and it means a major section is starting. So... Ah... Who is this? Oh good, this is Japa Shedu, okay? So, this happens to be Rangluk, okay? This is Rangluk. How did I know that? Because the next pung shé down here, says what? Sumba, Sopa, Pawang, okay? Okay, so you got to learn one thing about Tibetan education. So, we're going to teach...we're going to teach how to teach in January, right? Is that website going up today? Inshallah? I approved the pie chart. Okay, Inshallah. You know Inshallah? If God wills. Okay, comes from Sanskrit, Insh, it means wish. Same, yeah, vada means best, ish means gets their wish, they get to choose what they want. Okay, anyway... Tibetan education system has these parts, three parts, say... Shenlu Gagpa, Rangluk Shakpa, Tsepa Pongwa, Shenlu Gagpa, Rangluk Shakpa, Tsepa Pongwa. What's the first one? Shenlu... Shenlu Gagpa. The other guy gets to come and say, I think this is the definition of the wisdom body. Then he says something slightly wrong. It's never obviously wrong, it's only slightly wrong, and then you learn what's...why it's mistaken, and if we had time, if this was a monastery, I could teach you all the wrong ones, and by that you learn the right one, you see? It's like learning the wrong yoga pose. Like some yoga teacher will teach you... I don't know, do this... what do you call that? Plank pose, but spread your arms really wide, and then it hurts, and then as they see, now you won't forget that you should have your hands closer together, like that. So, we don't have time to learn all the mistakes. We're going to go straight to Rangluk Shakpa. Yeah, we actually state our system. So, the only part of a Tibetan education which is similar to a Western education, is this tiny part in the middle, where they just tell you what it is. There's no fun, there's no confusion, there's no like discovery, they just tell you, that, that, that, that, you know, in the Tibetan system, first you have a lot of fun hearing somebody say, I think wisdom body is...no, I think wisdom body...no, this is the wisdom body. And you get to hear all these guys fight with each other, and you learn a lot, and then a little piece in the middle, they say, okay, this is what we really believe. Okay, what's the third part? Tsa-pa-po-wa. They get to...that guy gets to come back and say, yeah, but your definition is not so good either. You know, in the third part, the...got it? Nobody laughed. In the third part, the other guy that you criticized, he gets to come back and say, you criticize me, but you also have this...I don't like your definition. And he fights with us, and you learn a lot. It's very fun. Okay? It's like having four brothers. Okay. Sanction... Okay. Here we go. Here's the definition. We're going to take it... up here... and we're going to put it in our cheat sheet. So, the search program is very sexy because you can put things in your cheat sheet. Okay? Here's the definition. Okay? That ultimate wisdom, which goes from an impure state to an immaculate state, is the definition of the wisdom body. Like... Vergen Maria...what's that? Immaculate. Totally clean. Okay? Why is it ultimate? It sees emptiness directly all the time, and at the same time it sees normal stuff. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] That's pretty ultimate. Okay? It's...the Buddha can see emptiness directly and walk around. Nobody else can. In the...there's some Japanese thing that you...you're cutting wood and suddenly you see emptiness and...this is not possible. You have to be in meditation. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Unless you're a Buddha. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] All right. You can have a big insights while you're cutting wood, but not... Okay. Good? Got it? Definition of the wisdom body, third body. What's the main... what's one of the main objects of that wisdom? You can say all things, but what's the main one? Duh! Emptiness. But...yeah, directly, the emptiness of the other three bodies. Okay? That's one of the main things they look at. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] They look at their own arm and say, look it's empty. They look at their own mind and say, look it's empty. Okay? They look at...see their arm in paradise and they say, that's also empty. Okay? That's also... not, not coming from me. Say, not, not... coming from me. That's the definition of emptiness. What's the definition of dependent origination? Yeah, very good all though. You're...you're hot today. I don't know what happened. Must have been those waffles. Uh... Yeah, coming from me is a short definition of dependent origination. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Everything coming from me. Emptiness means, nothing not coming from me. Double negative. [Speaker 2] Okay? Nothing not coming from me. [Speaker 1] Yes? Yeah, we split the chukku, dharmakaya, we split into the ultimate wisdom and the emptiness which it is mainly concerned with. Okay? We didn't get enough definition for the fourth body yet. You want to do that? Let's go do that. Okay? What's the definition of the fourth body of a Buddha? Essence body. Okay? In Tibetan it's called... Tibetan. Yeah, ngo nyi ku. Okay? Ngo nyi ku. What? Yeah, good. Okay, oops, I misspelled. By the way, if you cannot spell your search correctly, you never find anything. So, you... you have to be a Geshe to use the database. I didn't tell anybody that. Is this a good one here? Serna? I like it. He tried to make a low tone, I think. Serna? Okay, serna. Because there's another word serna, high tone. It means stingy. Okay? You don't want to mix them. This one means...somebody says. Claims, right? What famous book is full of seras? Uh... Di, di, di, di, di, di, di... Huh? No. Huh? No. What book was written by someone who didn't believe the subject he wrote about? Yeah, the Abhidharmakosha. So, the Abhidharmakosha is full of... seras. They say. Why did he write a book about a school that he didn't believe in? Yeah, he criticized his half-brother. He was in the lower school, then his half-brother whose name is... Arya Sangha wrote other books, then Vasubandhu criticized those books of his half-brother. Later, he realized he made a big boo-boo, and he asked his brother, what can I do as a...four powers? Back...fourth step...fourth power? How to balance the karma? Then...his brother said, well, you don't believe lower school anymore, right? And Vasubandhu said, right. Then he said, but you're the best person to write a book about what the lower school is. Then he said, why should I write a book about the lower school if I don't believe in it anymore? Then he said, who taught the lower school? The Buddha did. Why would Buddha teach something which is mistaken? DCI. Okay? Okay, we can't teach ultimate... we can't get 800 people in the trade center auditorium in Singapore and say, you're all going to die tomorrow. Become dogs. They won't come back. Okay, so we just say, you know, hi, we talk about the pen. You know, okay? Alright? So, many times Buddha looked at the audience and said, these guys, I can't teach these guys about death, I should teach them something more secular. And then he taught like a... So, then he wrote Abhidharmakosha. Vasubandhu wrote the most important book of the first school, but he didn't believe it. So, he kept saying, they say, they say, they say, ser, ser, okay? Alright, we're getting off the subject quite nicely. See? Here's another one, should we take that? No, it still says ser, no? By the way, we use a z, a zed, because we don't have a low tone in English. We do—S is for high tone, Z is for low tone, you just learn it. Ser, okay? It's not zer, okay? Okay, next one. Hmm... I'm sorry, okay, let's do it your way, which is pretty cool, it's a good idea, unfortunately it doesn't always stay around Lukla, but let's take a shot, okay? This is a word's very well considered suggestion. He says, why don't you use the Boolean search operator, which is a computer word for find things close by to each other, okay? So, we're going to find RANG LUG, sorry, nearby, let's say 20 lines. 20—within 20 lines of the definition of NGO NYID GUS. Now, it might work and it might not work, because they don't always say RANG LUG. OM MANI PADME HUM. Okay. Let's try RANG KYI LUG. There you go. So, you got to have different— it worked, it worked quite nicely, and it saved us some time. So, here's the definition of the fourth body, near the section that starts our system, okay? So, this is correct, and it's very short. Do you want to go deeper? Okay. I like this part. Who did an American thing? Yeah, I guess. I mean, I'm not doing anything else. There's no good movies out right now. Sorry. I shouldn't criticize Americans so much. Since I am one. [Speaker 2] Oops. [Speaker 1] Whoa. Okay, good luck. Uh... So, here it is. [Speaker 2] This is... [Speaker 1] Okay, the definition of the essence body, which means the emptiness body, of a Buddha, Svabhavakaya, is... the body which is the nature of all dharmas, the one which possesses the two purities. Definition of the fourth body. This is super sexy and you guys are lucky. It's lucky you chose this one. This is cool. Very few people understand this. Okay, what is a Buddha? They're like, are you a Buddhist? Yes. Do you believe in Buddhists? Yes. What's a Buddha? I don't know. Okay. You got to ask me a question, I'm waiting. Yeah. Bravo. Okay. So, if the emptiness body definition is... the body which is the nature of all dharmas. He's making a joke here. He used the word dharma and kaya, but he put... he put the nature of all. You see? He didn't call it dharmakaya, he called it... all dharmas kaya. All things kaya. Nature of all things kaya. He made a joke. He put chu nyi, dharma ta. Okay, the TA. He added the...right here. He added the TA. He could have said choky ku, which is just dharmakaya, but he made a joke. He put chu-ness, he put dharmakaya-ness body. Dharma-ness body. Dharma-ness kaya. Got it? It's a joke. When you have to explain a joke, it's not much of a joke. He could have called it dharma body, which has the two purities, but he didn't. He called it the dharma-ness body, which has the two purities. Because dharma-ness is a synonym for emptiness. Okay? He's making a joke. He's giving you a clue. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] If you have a debate, you could have a really good debate. You know, those of you super serious, you could say, oh, what's the definition of the essence body? Then the other person could say, it's the part of the dharma body which has the two purities. And then you could say, oh, is that what the author said? And the guy will say, I think so. And you say, no, he said, it's the part of the dharma-ness body that has the two purities. Then he'll say, but that doesn't make any sense, that sounds so weird. And you say, well, why do you say dharma-ness body? And you're going to say, because it's emptiness. Okay, got it? No? Okay. Alright, later. Next life. I'm very patient. I have lots of time. Okay. I got to go find the two purities for you, right? Let's go back to the search program. Okay. And we'll change it to... we're going to take it out of closeness thing. Okay. Sometimes when they make a list, they will have a single, simple syllable after the name of the thing. Ni. Ni, nice. Somebody was listening yesterday. DAG PA NI NI. Sometimes they'll give the... I'll show you something else, you can also say, DAG PA NI ZHES. Or ZHES. Or you can say, DAG PA NI ZER. Okay? It's like a quotation mark. Ready? Ready? E-R-S. Oopsie. Didn't work. Let's take that off. Okay, let's go again. Well, actually I already know what it is. I'll just... It's in the definition, okay? I'll cheat and I'll give it to you. Here we go. Okay. This is very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very important. Ready? Okay. This body can be divided into two. One, the essence body, which is the part that got pure by changing. And the essence body that was... Sorry. The essence body, which is the part which was always pure. And the Tibetan is quite difficult. CHAR GYUR PA means, was the part. CHAR RUG GYUR PA. CHAR RUG. CHAR LA GYUR PA. Okay? CHAR here doesn't mean to shine or something like that. It's a... It's a noun piece with a preposition glued to it. So, if you look it up in a dictionary, you won't find it. Okay, it's CHAR RUG GYUR PA. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Became that part. DE NYID GRAM MA KHYAS. Okay, got it? Understand? Okay. CHAR GYUR PA. Very difficult. This is hard. And the Tibetan word is very useful, LO BUR BA. Okay? Say LO BUR BA. LO BUR BA means... there's a logic word for that. Qualities of an object which are not... they're incidental? No. This sounds like propitious, but it's... there's a logic word for it. Qualities which weren't always that way. Okay? There's a... there's a logic word in English, I forget the word. It sounds like incidental or something. And it's hard to remember. Okay, anyway. Anyway. So, okay, you ready? I'll teach you one. You ready? Here's a first example. Example of the first one. Ready? If you understand the pen well, what happens? Huh? It helps to not get angry, but you don't stop anger permanently until you reach Nirvana. If you reach the third level of the second path... Yeah, you can't go to the lower realms anymore. Okay? You cannot go to the lower realms anymore. Something happens to all the seeds in your mind which could take you to the lower realms. They all get... Okay, I have birds where I live. They're called golden finches. Is that wrong? The little yellow ones? Lesser goldfinch. I haven't seen the more one. But anyway. And they love thistle seeds, thorn seeds. And those come from England and India. But the American government doesn't want those seeds in this country, because when it grows, it grows like crazy, and it has a sticker on it, like our... all of our plants out here. Okay? Okay? So, you can buy those seeds, but the customs has to radiate them. Okay? And the birds can eat them, and they love them, and it makes them happy, but they will never grow. They're ruined. Something in the genes is broken. Okay? They can't grow. They will never grow. Okay? So, the seeds you have in your mind that will make you a dog are radiated when you understand the pen correctly. Got it? Is that a kind of purity? To not have those seeds working? Yeah. Did you always have that purity? Or is it a purity you developed later? Yeah, you developed it. Okay? You worked on it and you reached that purity. Okay? Some of the fourth body is pure because you worked on it. Okay? Got it? You... you radiated all your seeds to go... to become a dog. Got it? That's the first half of the... essence body. Okay? Which itself is half of the... dharmakaya. Good. Two people are listening. It's good to have them on separate sides because people in between can... get something in each ear. Okay. So, if the first half of the essence body is the stuff you worked on and you changed about yourself, guess what's the second half? It's the part of you that was always pure. That is your Buddha nature. Okay? That is your Buddha nature. You cannot call it Buddha seed because... it doesn't grow. It never changes. You've always had it. Okay? Anything produced by seeds changes because the seed's power gets less. That's why you have to keep visiting your old lady after you find the boyfriend. Pachi. Okay? You can't quit. Okay? You can't quit. After you get rich, you have to keep giving money or you will lose your money. Okay? After you get married, you have to keep visiting the old lady or you will get divorced. Okay? Because the seed wears out. Okay? But, the second half of the essence body, the emptiness body of a Buddha doesn't change. Okay? You always had it. Listen, you can define it illegally at Diamond Mountain as the emptiness that you have of all the other parts of you which are not emptiness. The emptiness of my ear, the emptiness of my nose, the emptiness of my mind, the emptiness of my name, Michael. Though all those emptinesses together won't change when I become a Buddha. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Got it? What would happen if I didn't have those emptinesses? Where would my nose go if my nose had no emptiness? There would be no place for my mind to project it. The karma open, seed open, the nice nose comes out and it's like... no place to go. You need to scream to show the picture. Okay? You got to have emptiness. What's the most important part of a Buddha? The fourth body. What's the most important part of the fourth body? Yeah, the second half which has always been pure. You have that half right now. You are twelve and a half percent. Sorry, I changed the number. She's like, wait, the contract was twenty-five. Now it's twelve and a half percent. Because it's only half of the fourth body. It's your Buddha nature. I told her she was twenty-five percent Buddha already. I lied. It's only twelve and a half percent. Because it's only the second half of the fourth body. Okay? What's the coolest part of the fourth body? It's got to be the emptiness because you have it now. You already have it. Okay? Your ear is empty, your fingers are empty, your nose is empty, my pockets are empty. Earl has a question. [Speaker 2] Is the first part a cessation and the fourth one changing? [Speaker 1] That's a good question. That bears further examination. Chepa Chala. You know, somebody like Je Tsongkapa will say, Chepa Chala. It means, I don't know. But he'll say, that bears further examination. I was just thinking about that myself. I'm guessing it's a gokten. I'm guessing it's a cessation. In which case it doesn't change. Okay. Can you lose it? So, be careful. I mean, not change and lose is different thing, right? Impermanent, we learned that in DCI 7. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] Some things in DCI are real. Okay. Alright. He's going to help us out by giving us examples of each of those two. Okay. Just after he gave the definition, he's going to give us examples of those two. You ready? Here we go. I'm going to change that. Excuse me? No, it just means in his mind stream. The Tibetan says santana. The Sanskrit, santana. Which means mind stream, yeah. He's from Jalisco, right? Santana? Huh? Oh, yeah, I thought, yeah. Alright. This is the same as when you understand the pen, you radiate the seeds to become an animal. Okay, got it? Same, he's just talking about the same thing. Okay. Okay, got it? Now, facts in Buddhism are... unchanging. Okay? Like, it's two plus two, four. Say yes. So, it's a fact, it doesn't change. You see what I mean? Are the only two things you have to do, taxes and die. Yes. Okay, those don't change. Their nature doesn't change. Okay? If we all die, they're gone, but they don't change while they're here. Okay? Alright. NYID PA NI SANGS RGYAS PHAG PA'I THUGS LDAN STONG PA DANG LTA BU An example of the... I'm going to change something here. Let's do it here. Okay, how's that? It's interesting that he used the Buddha's heart twice. It's interesting that both his examples come from the Buddha's heart. Okay? The first is expressing something about the Buddha's heart which changes. And the second is expressing something about the Buddha's heart which can never change. Got it? It means the Buddha's heart is coming from seeds in the Buddha's mind. Okay? Seeds are opening in the Buddha's mind and creating the Buddha's mind. Okay? It's empty. It's not... not coming from seeds. This is bad to do in the afternoon after waffles. The Buddha's own mind is coming out of seeds in the Buddha's mind. Cool? By the time you're aware of your mind it's gone, but that's another story. Okay. Got it? You ready to debate this kind of thing? You feel comfortable with it? That's why we go... In that monastery, here's the day, in the morning you go meditate with the other monks. Two, three thousand monks together meditating. Pretty cool. Four o'clock in the morning. Then you go up on the roof of your house and you memorize... a book that you have no idea what it means. I memorized the first four chapters of the Abhidharmakosha before I knew Tibetan. Okay? And you're just like... you know, you have no idea what it means. Okay? Then the next thing you do is you go to class, and the teacher says, here's what the Abhidharmakosha means. And you're like, wow, thank you, but I don't understand it. Then he says, go to the debate ground and argue it with your friends for three hours. Then you work it out in the debate ground. Okay? So, we're doing step three here. You just got the book. I'm going to stop there. I'm not going to explain more. You're going to debate with each other and by the time you finish debating you will understand what happened in the class. Cool? Then tomorrow morning you can meditate on it. Got it? That's the process, tu sam gong. What's that mean? Study, go home think about it or debate it with your friends and then meditate on it. That's the educational process invented by the Buddha. Okay? Hear about it in class, go home and think about it or debate it with your friends and then next morning in your meditation review it again. Okay? Meditate on it. That's the Buddhist educational system. Okay? All right. So, this is going to be messy. How do we do... Can I just leave it up to Nick and Adam and I'll take a rest? Or should I try to... Okay. I don't think we need to do any... I don't think we have time. You want to do... Is there anything else we didn't do? I don't think we have time. Let's do three jewels, okay? Okay? Let's do three jewels, okay? It's maybe too much, but I don't care. Okay. So, we're going to say Buddha Jewel and then we're going to say Dharma Jewel and then we're going to say Sangha Jewel. A good debate question. You ready? I'm going to teach you half of this subject in one sentence. Ready? I'll save you a lot of time. Okay? It took me many years. Okay? This is the story of your life. You have better karma than I did. Uh... Is every case of the Dharma also the Dharma Jewel? Is all Dharma the Dharma Jewel? No. Sure. Give me a Dharma which is not the Dharma Jewel. Yeah, okay? Okay, got it? So, there's a difference between the Buddha and the Buddha Jewel. There's a difference between the Dharma and the Dharma Jewel. There's a difference between the Sangha and the Sangha Jewel. Which one protects you? The Jewel. Okay? So, it's important to figure out the difference. Okay? Buddha is general. Buddha Jewel is part of the Buddha that can protect you from the trouble. Okay? Same with the Dharma, same with the Sangha. Okay? What would you like to go look up in the ACIP library for Buddha Jewel? What's the first thing every Buddhist should know about something? Yeah, the definition. That's how we work. We're very precise. Everybody has to agree on the definition, otherwise you can't debate. What's the definition of Buddha Jewel? Are we talking about the same thing? Okay? So, here we go. Uh... Sang... Gye... Koin... Chok... Ki... Senni. Senni. Nice. Okay? You are asking the search program, what's the definition of the Buddha Jewel? Okay? What's the definition of the Buddha Jewel? Show me the definition of the Buddha Jewel. Ready? We're gonna go to the same two books, same two authors. Ready? Here's the authors down here. Ready? Yi... Ah... Senn... It's that fast. We have special search program. We started it in 1980. Most of you kids weren't born yet. What they say... You were just a twinkle in your father's eye, when he's looking at, he's looking at your mom. Is this a good one to use? No, cause it has... Good. I was gonna put a, take a rosary to anyone who says Sanna. You just protected yourself. Okay, next. Look at the first line. Ranglup. Okay? This is it. This is what we want. Okay? This is the real definition. According to who? Go down here, and you see the author's name. And you can see the English translation of the book's name. Somebody did 20,000 of those for you. Their name is Adam and Nick. Okay? And Jiggy, I mean Lama Jigme. And they were all translated into Spanish, I think, by Alejandro and the Spanish group, and they've been translated into German by... Piotr Wielicki, Peter the Great, and they've been translated into Russian by Maria. So, thank you for that. So, it took a couple of years to translate the names of the books. You see what I'm saying? The Tibetans took 700 years to translate these books. We're gonna finish in 500 years. Okay? Because we're faster. Okay, let's go get the definition. Oopsie. Scott, is there any way I can get a computer with more storage? No, they don't make them. Not. I'm getting desperate here. Yeah. It's all my rock and roll music is taking up a lot of space. I mean all the scriptures. Okay, here's the definition. Okay. Oh, Buddha Jewel, right? I'm gonna change it. Hmm. Sorry. Who can tell me what the two goals are? Yeah. They...they fulfilled... You wanna change it again? This...this is more... I mean, you gotta not be satisfied with Dharma English. You know? You gotta keep changing till it sounds natural. I'd love to have a lot of Chinese people in our translation school. Okay? We have to re-translate the old Chinese Buddhist books into modern Chinese, that anybody can read. Like a science fiction novel. Okay? Should be that easy to read, or newspaper. Okay. Then there's an old debate here. What's the... what's the question here that comes up in your mind? Yeah. I...my tooth broke just before I came here. I called my dentist. I said, my tooth broke. He said, well, come in tomorrow. I said, I can't. I'm going to Diamond Mountain. He's like, okay, well, good luck. You know? So, if my tooth broke, then how come Buddha is ultimate protection? You know? He didn't... he didn't fix my tooth. You know? So, is there no Buddhas in the world? They didn't finish helping me. They finish helping themselves, I understand. But they didn't finish helping me...me. Okay? The definition of finishing helping other people is to be able to help them. Got it? Perfectly able to help them is the definition of fulfilling other people's needs. Because you can't do more than that. You can't...nobody... in Buddhism, nobody can do more than that. Nobody can come and pour water on your head and say, okay, your teeth will never break again. Okay? They can only teach you how to not have broken teeth. Okay? Got it? Got it? Ultimate place of protection means, why did he use the word... by the way, when you're designing debates, leave out a word and see what happens. Leave out a word and see what happens, okay? Oh, Buddha is anybody who's a place of protection. Oh, okay, well, take the local police. Are they all Buddhas? Well, why do you say that? Well, they protect everybody. Oh, oh yeah, ultimate. Oh, well, that's different. Okay? So, if you want to have a good debate, leave out a word and see if there's any trouble. Okay? The definition of Buddha Jewel is anyone who is the ultimate place of protection, who has fulfilled all their own needs. So, leave out the part about other people. Is that a Buddha? Is that the kind of Buddha you want? In the world? Just take care of themselves and... good luck, gifts and everything, you know? See you in Taipei, Taichung, you know? Do you want a Buddha like that? No, I mean, they should care about me too. Okay? So, what's sexy, if you want to have a good debate, your group that we're going to make, that Tim and...sorry, Nick and Adam are going to help you make groups. If you want a nice debate, just leave a word out of the definition and see what happens. Leave something out of the definition and see what happens. It should be controversial. It should make for a good argument. Okay? Okay. What's next? What are we going to do next? I think it's going to work just about right, Michael. I think we're going to hit 3.30 right about the right time. Okay, here we go. CHOS KUN CHOG KHYAD SEMS Ready? EGGDOTTIN Is that a good one? By the way, check this right here. KHA CING KHA CING means what? Yeah, some debater comes. We don't want to use that one. That's his proposed definition. There's something wrong with it. He probably left out a word to see what would happen. No, that's very typical in the scripture. They'll leave out a word and see if you struggle with it. Okay? Next one. CHOS KUN CHOG KHYAD SEMS I'm looking, I'm looking. Well, this happens to look like a... This is the definition, so I'm sorry. I don't think there's any other one. Yeah. Yeah, now we're out of... Yeah, let's go back. We put in this cool thing in the search program right here. Those guys who are learning to use it, you can go backwards. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] You can go back to something. Okay? This is it. Okay, let's stop there. I mean, let's not go further than that. Okay. Here's the definition of Dharma Jewel. [Speaker 2] Okay? No. Okay. [Speaker 1] Why is it giggling? I'll read it. Definition of Dharma Jewel is a truth on the pure side within the heart of an Arya, which is part of either the truth of the end of pain, or the truth of the path to the end of pain. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] To understand this definition, you must understand the four Arya truths. Okay? To understand this definition, you must understand the four Arya truths. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] What's the first one? Suffering. Suffering. Almost everything in our world is pain. Okay? Suffering. Second truth? It has a cause. Third truth? You can stop it. Fourth truth? There's a way, there's a path. Okay? Now, these two are good guys, and these two are bad guys. Okay? Now do you understand part of this definition? The...a pure side of... the truth... there are two truths on the pure side, and there are two truths on what we call the mental affliction side. Okay? These two, pain and the source of pain, they're on the bad side. And... stopping pain and how to do it, they're on the good side. Okay? So, only these two guys are part of the Dharma Jewel. Okay? These two guys are part of the Dharma Jewel, not these two guys. Okay? The two good guys. That's why it says, on the pure side, truth on the pure side. Okay? So... The Dharma Jewel is a truth, and it's two of the four truths. It's the last two. The... the end of pain, and the path to the end of pain. Okay? That's the real Dharma Jewel. Okay? Well, that's dangerous. I like it. You left out part of the definition. Okay? The Dharma Jewel is two of the four truths. Then if you're debating this guy, you say, okay, take the truth of suffering, I guess that's the Dharma Jewel. You have to say the good side. Yeah, in the definition you have to say the good side, because if you say, the Dharma Jewel is two of the four truths, somebody is going to say to you, what about the source of pain? What about pain itself? Is that the Dharma Jewel? Are you going to take protection in pain? You know? So, you have to say the pure side. But yeah, I think Anton, because of the way he thinks, he would like to make it more clear, and simple. You could just like, the two good guy truths. Instead of saying a truth on the pure side. Right? Take a walk on the pure side. Huh? That's a good question. Here's the debate. And you can start, if you're not sure about something, you can start with the opposite. Okay? You ready? Anytime you stop something, bad thing, permanently, it's part of the Dharma Jewel. Like, why does it have to be in the heart of an Arya? Then, take the person on the third level of the second path. They radiated their seeds. Okay? They radiated their seeds. They still have them, but they radiated them. Okay? So, you guys have to debate it. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Yeah, well, Geshe can't have one of the truths unless he is an Arya, right? Or she is an Arya. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Okay. You okay? You guys okay? Okay. Now, it's popular in Geshe Michael's classes to say, the Dharma Jewel is the direct perception of emptiness, because that's what protects you. Okay? And that's okay. You can say that. If somebody said to you, you know, BUD DHAR MA ZHAG RANG RGYAS BYA'O MI which is—means I go to refuge in the Dharma, right? Very famous in like Sri Lanka or Burma. Then you say, well, what are you taking refuge in? The Dharma. What's the Dharma? This book is the Dharma. Okay? But it can't protect you. Okay? Only the direct understanding of the pen can protect you. Okay? Book cannot protect you. The book takes you to a place where you can find someone who protects you. Okay? But the book itself is— many people died holding Dharma book. My mother died with a Bible in her hand. Okay? Didn't stop death. Okay? Got it? All right. We have six minutes to do... Yeah, Sangha Jewel. Let's go. By the way, this part here we'll talk about some other day if we have time. But for those of you Dharma nerds, it says only nominally you can divide it into the deceptive Dharma Jewel and the real Dharma Jewel. That gets into another debate, we're not going there. Okay? Okay, wait, before the kitchen guys come in six minutes and we give away the money, which is always so much fun. We got to look up the... Gendun... Gendun... Kwan Chokyi. Kwan Chokyi. What's the last time you made a prayer to the Three Jewels? Before class. Sangye Chodron Chokyi Chok Nam La Chan Chu Pai Duk Dai Mi Kan Chu Chi Dakyi Jin So Gyi Pei Sui Nam Chi Dolam Pin Chir Sang... Okay? That first three words, Sangye Chodron. Sangye Chodron Chok. Chok means Gendun. Sangye. Buddha Dharma Sangye. That's...you...every day you do that before class, okay? I'm just telling you what's going on. Okay, here we go. We hit it. No, did we hit it? Did we hit it? Word's busy, somebody else has to think. No, there's a... How about this one? No, there no. Yeah, this looks like a pretty good one. Okay, good. Oops, sorry. Okay. Let's go up here. [Speaker 2] Okay. Okay. [Speaker 1] I'm going to put it down here. I may have to change it, but right now I'm going with that, okay? Any Arya who possesses the eight qualities of knowledge and freedom, okay? We don't have time to do eight qualities, but I'll tell you the short definition, okay? Any Arya is Sangha Jewel, okay? Any Arya is the Sangha Jewel, that's all. Okay, that's the easy definition of Sangha Jewel, okay. I'll tell you something cool, if you can see emptiness directly, then every Buddhist in the world is praying to you every morning, or at the beginning of every class. Sanghe chodan sok... That's me! Got it? You don't have to be a Buddha to be a Jewel. You can be one of the three Jewels if you see emptiness directly, okay? That's kind of cool, you know? Think how ... If you can, in this class, if you can see emptiness directly in one of these three-day retreats, then every Buddhist in the world is like, Sanghe chodan sok ... Hey, that's me! You know? Thanks for the prayer. I'll try to help you out. Really, really. Jenda, jenda. Okay, got it? You can be one of the three Jewels, not too hard. Just study. Just learn it, okay? Then you can be one of the three Jewels. In Christian they have Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. They have also three, three Jewels. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, so ... But they don't say you can become them, you know? Or you're close to being one of them. That's pretty cool, okay? Got it? Alright, I got them for you. Let me see, where did I put them? I have to give them to you later. It's complicated. I'll give them to you later. They're very difficult. They're really difficult, okay? Maybe tomorrow, okay? Yeah, they're very complicated. They're very ... They were taught by Maitreya, and nobody understands them. Everybody quotes the eight, but they don't know what's the eight, okay? So, I'll get it for you, okay? The problem is, two of them are the names of the groups of the other six, okay? That's the problem. But don't worry about it. Never mind. Okay, so, you can say the definition of Arya is... Sorry, Sangha Jewel. Any Arya, okay? Any Arya, okay? Anyone who saw emptiness, direct me. It's Sangha Jewel, okay? Got it? It's correct. That's probably what the Lamrim says, okay? Oh, maybe it's in the Lamrim. Yeah, I think he mentioned it and then I went and got it for you. Yeah. In my opinion, this is the best and bravest explanation. Okay. Okay, here's the eight, okay? Then we'll take a break, okay? Huh? After? After we take a break. Cappuccino break. Oh, cappuccino break, sounds good to me. They're in a good mood, maybe they'll make one for us. Okay. Okay, first one. They saw emptiness directly. That's the first one. Okay. Okay. Number two, they understand that the emptiness they saw is also possessed by every living being. Okay? Every...they saw emptiness, number one, directly. Number two, they understand everybody they ever met has it. Emptiness, okay? All beings have their own emptiness, but so does every clock and every computer and...okay? Got it? Okay. Number three, they know they have the first two. They know they saw emptiness and they know it spreads to every being. Okay? They know that. Got it? It's difficult, these eight are very difficult. One of the cool things about seeing emptiness directly is that you know you did it. If you're not sure, you didn't, so don't ask me. Okay? When you see it directly, you know and you don't have to ask anybody. The way you see emptiness directly the first time and the way a Buddha sees emptiness directly are not different. They're 100% the same. Okay? So, you don't have to ask anybody. Okay? If you ask me, Geshe-la, I was... doing the three-day meditation, I went to the toilet, I hit my head, I saw some pink light, did I see emptiness? If you have to ask me, you didn't. Okay? Got it? Definitely, no question. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] I'm just telling you what happened in my bathroom. Okay? You have to climb up to get into mine. I don't know how Gyelse gets in there. Maybe that's proof she's a Buddha. This is complicated. Four through six are usually grouped together. Four, five and six are usually... they teach them together. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Number one, they don't have any more obstacles created by attachment. Okay? Number four. Four, right? Yeah, they don't have any more obstacles created by attachment. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] These are very, very difficult. Okay? I have to go to many scriptures to get them. Number five, they have freedom from obstacles created by a limit to their understanding. Okay? They don't have those obstacles. They are free of obstacles created by having limit to their understanding. Okay? And number eight, sorry, six, right? I'm going to make it easier for you. Okay? They are free of obstacles created by not enough love for other people. That's number six. Okay? Now it gets more complicated. Okay? If you want to go to Sarame and Bida Geshe, you can learn these eight, because they don't know what they are. Okay? But they define it everyday. Okay? Number seven, is the fact that the first three are kinds of knowledge. Knowledge. Number seven, is the fact that the first three are kinds of knowledge. They are different kinds of knowledge. Why that's counted as number seven, I have no idea. Okay? Actually, I do have some idea, but it's too long. Got it? The fact that the first three are kinds of understanding, is number seven. That's why this is so difficult. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Alright? Now, you ready for number eight or you want to go home? Ah, some brave people there. It took me a long time to find this explanation. The fact that the second set of three, four, five, and six, are that you are free of something, is number eight. The fact that four, five, and six are that you are free of something, is number eight. It's very complicated. Okay? What is four, five, and six? Let's say it again. Number four, you don't have obstacles relating to attachment. Number five, you don't have obstacles relating to not enough knowledge. And number six, you don't have obstacles relating to not enough love. Got it? So, four, five, and six are kinds of freedom. One, two, and three are kinds of knowledge. That's why these are called the— let's go back. Yeah, where'd that go? That's why these are called the eight qualities of knowledge and freedom. Okay? Okay? I'm gonna mess up the definition, you ready? I didn't say some, I said some number. Maybe they have one, maybe they have two, maybe they have five, maybe they have eight. But you don't have to have all of them to be Sangha Jewel. You have to have some of—one of them, yeah. No, no. Now, which ones you don't have when you're lower Arya, which ones you do have, you can look that up. Good luck. Okay. Give me those eight, let's put them in our cheat sheet. Uh... Roughly, okay? We'll say generally. What's number one? Oh. How many Sangha Jewels have this one? Okay, sorry, I get excited. What's the second one? What? Oh, oh. People and things, okay. You want a famous Geshe question? You saw the video of me during the Geshe debate? The question the guy is asking, I remember. Everything has emptiness, right? Everything. My nose has emptiness, this box has emptiness, the pigs who are running around have emptiness. Which emptiness do you see first, directly? Yeah, your own. Vivian sees Vivian's emptiness. Jack sees Jack's emptiness. Jessica sees Jessica's emptiness first, okay? That's always the first one. Got it? But when you first study emptiness, is it easier to do it with a person or some... thing? Okay, that's another, that's the second famous Geshe question. When you're talking about direct perception, the first one is always... your own. Gibson is Gibson, Emily is Emily, okay? But when you study emptiness with a teacher, they start with things and not people, because people complicate it, as you know if you have a partner. Okay, what's number three? Oh, that's...these are complicated. Number four? Yeah, I'm going to say... Okay, no more obstacles created by attachment. No more obstacles created by limits to their knowledge. Six? No more obstacles... created by... insufficient love. Now it gets nasty. Yeah, the fact... that the first three are kinds of knowledge. Eight? The fact that the next three are... obstacles. Oh, kinds of freedom from obstacles. Very difficult, very difficult. These eight are very difficult. The first three are the knowledge, the second three are the freedom. The last two are the fact that they are knowledge and freedom. Now, I'll help you a little bit, or I'll confuse you more. Generally speaking, four, five, and six are not possessed by a lot of Sangha jewel people, because they're not Buddhas yet. Okay? Four, five, and six are the ones that a lot of Sangha jewel people may not have, because they're not a Buddha yet. Okay? So, an Arya, a Bodhisattva Arya can pretty easily have the first three, but... only ones which are Buddha generally have the next three. Okay? Alright? Got it? That's why the definition says some number, maybe one, maybe eight, maybe five, maybe four. Okay? Safe definition of Sangha jewel. Anyone who saw emptiness direct me. Easy. Okay? In this debate ground called Diamond Mountain, you will never lose a debate, if you know that, about Sangha jewel anyway. That's all you have to know about Sangha jewel. You're going to forget these eight by tomorrow. I even forget where I put them. It took me a long time to find them. By the way, if you're interested, they come from another book by Maitreya called Uttara Tantra. Very famous. Okay? It's a source of the Mind Only School. Alright? You deserve a break. So do I. Fifteen minute break. When you come back, grab your friends that you want to be in a group with, and go to some corner... go to some corner and say, this is our group's corner. And then we're going to teach you how to debate in a group. You must come back on time, because we don't have much time. Come back by... five minutes after four. 4.05. Anyone who doesn't enter the debate ground on time, 4.05, will taste a rosary. Where they don't want it.
