[Говорящий 2] Welcome everyone to Pure Yoga. My name is Copper, and it's a great, great privilege for me to have all of you here, and to have one of the most inspiring teachers I've had the great honor of studying with here tonight. This is Yeshe Michael Roach. He follows in the Buddhist lineage, Tibetan style of yoga. He's one of, I believe he originally graduated from Princeton University with honors, but then went to India to find himself, and through that became a monk, and one of the first Westerners in over 600 years to achieve the title, the level of Yeshe. So it's such a great honor. He's also the author of many of the books that we have on sale out front. How Yoga Works, Diamond Cutter, really, oftentimes people ask me, what's a really good book to kind of get interested in yoga? And I always just reference How Yoga Works. It's amazing how it organized the idea of what is yoga. So it's just such an honor, Yeshe, love having you here. Thank you, thank you. [Говорящий 1] We're just going to start with some music, okay? Today is, in our tradition, in our lineage, today is New Year's. The moon last night was Shivaratri, the black moon, totally black of the whole year. It's the worst night of the year. And then today is the day of hope, and today the moon changed in the morning. And this is Losar, this is our New Year. So I think it's very beautiful that we are together today, to do something good today. They say if you start the year with something good, then the whole year will be good. This is the words that you're going to sing along. It's very complicated. And, I don't know, she will sing first, and then we'll sing, okay? At some point I have to sing with her, but don't get confused. [Говорящий 2] We were going back and forth. Yeah? [Говорящий 1] Okay. Okay. So, I thought a good way to start the year would be with Yoga Sutra. I gave a class here, I don't know, about a year ago about a kind of yoga that is done in our monastery called Niguma. And then at that time we were talking maybe to come and talk about Yoga Sutra in Singapore and Taipei and Hong Kong, in the Pure studios. But I didn't have time to go all three. So I decided to do it, well, Colin decided to do it in Hong Kong. But then we were coming to Singapore this week to give talks later in the week about the Heart Sutra, Shinjin. You call it? Arjuna Paramita Hrudaya Sutra. And so we were, I don't know, Copper or somebody heard about it and they said, Oh, come to teach Yoga Sutra, you know, in one day. But I thought there's a very nice part of Yoga Sutra which helps me a lot. And it's taught in our monastery. We learned it for many years. I was taught it for many, many years. And I thought maybe in the new year this is a good thing to learn. So it's really about love and it's how to have love. And this is a beautiful, beautiful part of the Yoga Sutra. So I thought to talk about that. It's called Maitri. Say Maitri. Maitri. Karuna. Karuna. Mudita. Mudita. Upaksha. Upaksha. Maitri. Maitri. Karuna. Karuna. Mudita. Mudita. Upaksha. Upaksha. Chipe. Chipe. What's the other two? Someone taught me today. I don't have it. Okay. Anyway. In the Heart Sutra we're going to do it in all three languages. Like, So, and then in Like this. We're going to do this week as a tribute to India and a tribute to China because the Heart Sutra is something that joins the two countries and it was very popular in both countries. So I think we'll be doing that in Chinese and in Sanskrit. So I want to talk about, these are four kinds of love. These are four different kinds of love. And we have a very beautiful tradition for teaching them. Why do they come in the Yoga Sutra? Why are these four in the Yoga Sutra? So I'm going to read you the part before that. I think we can start on page five. The Sanskrit says, It means you're going to have problems. Okay? This is a new year, right? But even in, like last year you will have some problems, okay? Problems will come in the new year, right? And we had problems last year. Everybody had some problems. And then he gives a list of some problems that you might have, especially with your yoga practice. Okay? But also anybody, okay? He says, Obstacles occur when the mind is distracted. And this can be caused by illness, fogginess in the mind, having doubts, carelessness and laziness. So he's describing, really, what it feels like when you have a bad day and things are not going well. And he says the mind is distracted. You're trying to concentrate on something and you're trying to... You're at work and you're trying to concentrate on something or you're trying to do your yoga, your asanas, and you're trying to do that. Or especially if you try to meditate. Or even if you try to have a relationship with somebody. And then you have, in Tibetan they call it nam yin. Yin means you get distracted. Your mind goes off. And then, like you're doing, you're working, and then you start thinking about something somebody said to you. Or you're with your family and you think about something that happened at work and you feel sad. Or you're at work and you're trying to work and you think about something your husband said and you don't feel happy. And then suddenly you're having a nice day, your day is going well, and then suddenly this thought comes in your mind. So shaya also means doubt. You start to have doubt about your life. You think, oh, maybe I'm not doing the right thing. Or maybe I should try something else in my life. Constantly we are questioning ourselves. Am I doing the right thing in my life? Or could I be doing something else with my life? And that's typical for the new year. A new year starts and you think, am I doing what I'm supposed to be doing with my life? And we all have things we want. We want to lose five pounds. And we want to have better yoga practice. And we'd like it if our husband was a little bit more interesting sometimes. And things like that. We all have the same list every year. And these are obstacles. These are parche, in Tibetan they're called parche. Okay? So he has a list of obstacles. Fogginess in the mind means, it's the opposite of distraction, sthyana, when you are trying to meditate and you feel sleepy. And I once asked my teacher, why am I sleepy in my meditation? He says, you don't sleep enough at night. So then during meditation you feel sleepy. It's very profound. And also if you eat too much. Or you don't do your yoga practice. But also your whole life can be sleepy. You don't feel excited about your life. Or like you used to. Or you don't feel excited about your relationship. Or you try to do things and you really don't have... I don't know. You're not excited and you don't work hard. And you're trying to do something new with your life and you just feel tired. And you don't feel energy. Okay? So these are a list of problems. Laziness. We call it lelo in Tibetan. And you keep postponing things and you're supposed to be learning some new yoga or you're supposed to be learning something new at work or you're supposed to be doing some project and you keep delaying. I don't know about you, but today I'm studying Chinese. My teacher is from Shanghai. And we do it on Skype three times a week. But I get lazy. I don't want to study. But I want to speak Chinese but I don't want to study. And then I'm sitting there and I'm talking to my friends and we're planning the music tonight. And then I'm like, Wow, Geshe Michael, that's what they call lazy. Right now what you're doing is what they call lazy. It's not a big... I had this big realization in my meditation. You are lazy. I never thought I was a lazy person. But today I was like, Yeah, you're lazy. You don't want to do what you're supposed to do. And that's called lazy. I'm like, Wow, I have laziness. This is another problem in your life. You know you should be doing something. You have some job you're supposed to do and some project you're supposed to do or something you're supposed to do in your house or with your family or at your job and you just avoid it. And that's called laziness. And you don't think of yourself as lazy, but we are. Okay, next verse, page 6. Mistaken views of the world which are left uncorrected. So this is a big one. This is a very big one. And this we're going to talk about at... What's it called? Is it NTUC? On what days? Tuesday and Wednesday. So come then, okay? It's about mistaken views of the world. Our alitya, right? And it's a very, very beautiful subject. And we're not going to talk about it tonight. Tonight we're talking about love. But to look at the world the wrong way is something that we all do. And if you looked at it in a different way, if you learned to see things in a different way, then you could have a very unusual life. You could have a very special life. My lama asked me, can you make some money for the refugees? And I said, I'm a monk, I don't work. And he said, well I want you to go to work. We had a big fight. And then he said, you start a business. I said, that's the last thing I want to do, is start a business. That's why I came to the monastery. And we had a big fight. But then he said, you have to prove to yourself that you see the world in the right way. That you understand how things work. You need to prove it to yourself. That you have vidya, which means understanding of the world. So then he said, you go to work, you start a business. He gave me a sutra, Vajracharyaka Sutra, Jinkanjin. And he said, you take this sutra and you go start a business. Now last year Warren Buffet bought that business. It's $250 million a year now. And I don't know anything about business, and I don't like business. But I know how to view the world. I understand what makes things happen. I know how to make things happen. Did you see Matrix? And the guy found out that the world is a computer program. And then some guy shot a gun at him. Did you see that part? And he goes, shoot. And then the bullet comes here, and then the bullet just falls down. Because he understands how to how to reach into the world, and how to change it. And if you study a view, how to view the world, how to understand the world. If you study that. Was it Tuesday night or Wednesday night? Wednesday night. Tuesday and Wednesday night. Yeah. So it's both nights. Different talk each night. But we're going to talk about how a stupid monk, lazy monk, can make $250 million company. Just, you know, you just reach in and change things. You change very interesting things. It's very fun. And it's not what we're talking about today. But it's in the Yoga Sutra. So these are problems that we have. We feel lazy. Or we feel nervous. I think he has more. Let me see. What's the next page? Yeah. Okay. Page 7. Dukkha dharmanasya Angam nijayatva Shvasa prashvasa kshepa Sahabhuva I like shvasa prashvasa bhikshepa shvasa prashvasa bhikshepa It means your breathing gets out. Okay? Like, if you watch a person who is nervous, or you watch a person who is having a bad day, or you watch a person who is angry, how is their breath? What's the breath like? It's like You know, they are breathing funny. The chi is wrong. And the breathing is wrong. Also in Yoga, if you are trying to do some pose and you are not very good at it, and you lose your calm, then the breathing starts to go crazy. Shvasa prashvasa bhikshepa Your breathing starts to get messed up. And then the mind flies off. And there is pain in the body. Dharmanasya means the mind starts to feel sad. And dukkha is the feeling in the body is bad. So these are other obstacles. Maybe you get sickness. Or maybe you can't concentrate. But then also your breathing changes. Your prana changes. And you feel nervous all the time. And you feel some upset. People upset you easily. Next page. And you can read it. You can take it home and read the whole thing. There is a comment here. Tat patiṣṭhiraṭṭha mekha-tattva-vyāsa Tat patiṣṭhiraṭṭha means if you want to have an antidote or a counter-agent for those problems in your life. So you are going to have a new year now. This morning the new year started. And then the problems will start. In the first hour or the first two hours then the problems start. And you get problems. And you feel unhappy. You feel sad. And things go wrong. We had a big talk planned. What, next week? 800 people signed up. Suddenly it was cancelled. You know, this morning. And we were all like, ah! And then things are going to happen. Things will go wrong. And problems will come to you. Maybe even before new year. Maybe even before you woke up. You were laying in the bed. And you were worrying about some problem in life. Or you already had some thought in your mind. Something is going wrong. You know, like you don't even... Problems don't start when the sun comes up. The problems start while you are trying to sleep. And then you start thinking about your problems and the things in your life and things like that. So this is life. This is our life. We want things. We want to be happy. We want to be calm. And then things go wrong. So things happen. Things go wrong. And we want things and we can't get them. And a talk with 800 people is cancelled. In the last minute. So then what should we do? Or it's not going well with your husband or your wife. Or think there is a problem in your life. Or your yoga practice is wrong. You are practicing for a long time. And then suddenly you hurt your back or something. And you were hoping to do a scorpion this year. And instead of that you can hardly bend down. And then things go wrong. Things will go wrong. And you know that. Our life is like that. Things will go wrong. Especially with relationships. It's hard. Things are hard. So what should you do? What are we going to do in the new year? So I thought it would be very nice if in the new year I could give you something real practice you can do. And you can do this all the time. You can do this anytime. And it will just make you happy. Okay, skip to the next page. bhagvanataścitta-prasāraṇa pācāraṇa-vidhāraṇāvyaṁ vāprāṇasya viśhayavati vāprātya-pravṛttir utpāna manasa-sthiti-nibandhani This practice makes the mind bright and clear as pure water. There is a practice we are going to learn today. And it makes your mind as bright and clear as mountain, stream, water. Like you are having some problem. You are having some fight. You have some problem with your job. They cancel your talk. If you do this meditation. I am going to teach you a meditation. And if you do it, your mind is prasāraṇa. It means very clear like water. Clean like water. Bright and clear. It gives the same effect as releasing and storing the wind of the breath. So it is a pranayama. What I am going to teach you today is a mental pranayama. And then it changes the prana. So it is a practice you do in meditation. And then it changes your breathing. And that changes your prana. And that changes your heart. And then you feel happy. You just feel happy. It is like an instant, how do you say, acceptment or aspirant. It is like an instant effect on your mind. And you just feel, suddenly you feel happy. Even in the worst thing. They call you in the morning. You are going to lose thousands and thousands of dollars. This is cancelled. And then you just do this little practice. And then you feel happy. And nothing can make you unhappy. If you learn this, nothing can make you really unhappy. It is hard to be unhappy. I guess you can try. But if you learn this little meditation, it is difficult to be unhappy. But probably we can do. It also helps control the tendency we have of thoughts constantly arising. So you always have uttapana. You have thoughts coming up in your mind. You can't stop the thoughts. Sometimes you can't sleep. Or you sit down to have breakfast and still you are thinking about something that somebody said to you yesterday at work. You can't stop your mind talking. I used to interview all the people who came to my school. Then it got too big. But in the early years, I used to interview everybody who came to the school. We have a 14-year program. It is free. But you need an interview and you have to work very hard. So this guy came. I said, what do you do for a living? He says, I shoot heroin. I am a heroin addict. I said, oh, that is interesting. Then I said, I never met anybody who did that. Just did that. That is all his job. His life is that. Then I said, why do you do that? He said, inside here, always talking. Always talking. Make me crazy. Inside here, always talking. Blah, blah, blah. Always talking. When I shoot the heroin, he shuts up. One hour, two hours. He shuts up. I am so happy. And his mind is constantly talking. So our mind also is always talking. Especially if someone hurts you, or somebody does something to you, or the boss says something to you. You can't even enjoy breakfast. You watch a movie or something. You can't enjoy the movie because this mind inside is talking. So if you do the practice that we are going to learn today, then it will stop talking. And the mind becomes a pastadana. Becomes beautiful like water. Like crystal. And you just feel happy. So I thought, I use it all the time. And it makes me really happy. And I thought it is a good gift to give you. On New Year's you are supposed to give some people something beautiful. So I am going to write things on the board. And it just helps. It helps a little bit to understand. These are not English words. These are Sanskrit. And they are holy words. So there are four parts of this meditation. There are four parts. So I am going to write them. Say Maitri. [Говорящий 2] Maitri. Maitri. [Говорящий 1] Maitri you can say love. Love. But it is a special thing in this meditation. It is not just normal love. In Maitri. The second part is called Karuna. Say Karuna. Karuna. Karuna means, what does it say, compassion? Compassion. What does it say on that page? The second one is compassion. It is the first one. The third one is Mudita. Say Mudita. Mudita. Mudita in my book. It is written by one of my students. Yeah, I know. It is my book. Joy. Joy. I will just do one more thing. Mudita is joy. And Upaksha. Which is equanimity. Someone told me, I don't know the character, but it is chief. Chi is my friend, in Chinese, chi. And then pei, chi pei, chi pei, chi, chi pei. Shi, shi, shi, shi, shi, shi, and then, I don't understand, shong, is it shong? Shi, sorry, shi, equal, don't treat somebody better than you treat somebody, be equal, treat people equal. [Говорящий 2] Ping zhen, doesn't make sense, shi. Ping zhen, equal, equal means ping zhen. [Говорящий 1] But don't treat a friend better and treat the enemy better, treat everybody the same. Yeah, everybody, anyway, see, pei, shi, shi, shi, shi. So anyway, these are the four parts of the meditation. My three karuna mudita peksha, in the Yama Sutra, my three karuna mudita peksha. And it has a special meaning, okay? It has a very special meaning. We're gonna go through the way we learn it in the monastery, okay? I'll say it for you. Senzen tanze dewa dan deway bu dan dewa gucci. Senzen tanze dunyo dan dunyo gucci dan dewa gucci. Senzen tanze nye re chak dan dan dan dewa gucci. Senzen tanze nye re chak dan dan dan dewa gucci. This is very famous in our monastery, okay? We learn this part of the Yama Sutra in a sitjang language. So it's very, very beautiful and I want to teach it to you that way, okay? This is how we learn it in the monastery. This is how we learn the meditation. The Yama Sutra doesn't tell the whole thing. And the old, there's a very, very old meditation for this Maitreya Karana Mudita Upeksha and you can learn it, okay? I want to teach you that meditation. And then when you have problems, you just do it and it all goes away. It just finishes like that. And I love it, okay? I do it all the time. Because I have lots of problems. I try to do big things and then we have more problems, okay? So, I'll just put up a good one. Mingbo and Mercedes, this is your homework, okay? We were gonna talk about it tonight. You don't have to write that. I'm just gonna give you this, okay? I'll give you the English, okay? This is a prayer. This is at the beginning of the meditation, you do a prayer, okay? And it's very beautiful. So, say Sanchen. Sanchen. Sanchen. Sanchen. Sanchen. Dewa. Dewa. Dang. Dang. Dewe. Dewe. Gyu. Gyu. Dang. Dang. Dena. Dena. Chimanu. Chimanu. It's very beautiful. This is Maitreya. This is what Maitreya means. Maitreya means, Sanchen means living beings, okay? Living beings. Why don't I say people? Because we also include animals, okay? Insects, fish, birds, cows, everybody. Okay, so Sanchen is a word for every living thing. All living things. Sanchen means all of them, okay? All living things. All living things. Not just people. Actually, in Sanskrit, Purusha, right? The word for people, it covers insects also. And birds, and fish, and cows. They don't use a separate word for humans and a separate word for animals or insects. It's all the same word. People, okay? So living people. All living things. So all living things. Dewa means sukha, happiness. They should have happiness. So Dewa means happiness. Dan means end. Dewa gyu means the cause of happiness. The cause of happiness. Dan dena means if they had, if every living thing had happiness and the cause of happiness, chimaru. Chimaru means how nice it would be, okay? How nice it would be. So this is the first part of the prayer. This is Maitreya. This is the definition of Maitreya. In the old, old, old system, this is what Maitreya, love. What's the meaning of love? What is the meaning of love? You meet somebody and you say, I wish you loved much more. I wish you had everything you want. So this is, when you do this meditation in the Yoga Sutra, which makes your mind clear and makes you happy. You just think about somebody and you say, it would be nice if they got what they want. That would be nice. I would like that. What do you have to meditate about before you meditate on this? You have to think what they would like. Like somebody wants a new car. Somebody wants a Mercedes Benz. And then if you're gonna do this prayer, you have to know what they want. Or someone wants their husband to chink. Or somebody wants more money. Or somebody wants not to have a cancer. One of my students is in a Sriya retreat. This morning I got, in the Shivaratri, she had a heart, in the retreat she had a heart failure. Last night, I got the email in the night. And she had an operation this morning. And they put a pacemaker in this morning. Very bad time, the night is, that night is the worst night of the year, last night. And she got it, she felt it. So then, I have to think what would she want. What would somebody want? You have to think what would they want. So you have to think about what somebody else wants. When you feel sad. When you have a problem. When they cancel your talk in, Jen, go, go Jen, you know, right? Child in temple. Okay, when suddenly it's like that. Then you feel, oh no, you feel sad. Something go wrong in your life. You get heart problem, suddenly. She went, she had a pacemaker put in this morning. They took her out. She's going back to retreat tomorrow. He said, I'm not stopping. It's a three year retreat, thousand days. She said, I'm not, I'm going back tomorrow. But she feel something goes wrong. Something goes wrong, big goes wrong. Your heart stops. Your heart begins to stop. They say, you need the, you need the, she went to the hospital. They said, come in, we'll operate right now. And she's walking, before that she's healthy, she's happy, she's nothing, you know? Then they said, that's it, go, cut now, cut. Don't cut, you die. She's like, okay, cut, you know? And when you have a big problem, then do this meditation, Maitreya. What is that? Think about somebody else. Anything, anybody, doesn't matter. If you want, if you have a problem, and you have an obstacle, the first step, think about somebody else. Stop worrying about yourself, okay? This is the key. That's the whole key to the whole thing, okay? You don't have to do the next two hours, okay? Maitreya means, if you want to be really happy. Like you're having a problem, you have a serious problem, your heart just stopped. Or your husband is bothering you, or your boss is bothering you, or you have a bad back or something. First step in this system, in Yoga Sutra system, Maitreya, think about somebody else. Think about somebody. That's so powerful, it's so strong. It's so against human nature, you know? Your heart stopped, you're supposed to think about you. You know, you're supposed to worry, what am I gonna do, you know? How much is this operation gonna cost me? You know, like, they say, no, stop. Think about anybody else. Such and such, think about somebody else. Anybody. What they were, and think about getting it from them. Think about getting what somebody else wants from you. It's so unexpected, meditation. So powerful, really, really powerful. When you feel unhappy, when you feel depressed, when things are not going right, when you can't sleep, your yoga's not going well. Your meditation is lousy. I had a great meditation the other day. This is the most famous meditation I had. I sat down to meditate. Then I fell asleep. I hit my head on the wall. I fell down and I hit the wall. You feel bad, right? You feel like, oh, I'm not a good person. I can't do anything. My mother asked me to meditate. I fell asleep, I hit my head on the wall. So, do my trick. Think about somebody else, and think about what they want. Anybody. Okay, my friend, I know he wants a flute. He wants a Chinese flute. So just concentrate on that. Think, oh, I'm gonna get him a Chinese flute. I'm gonna get him a Chinese flute. Anybody else, it doesn't matter. Any other person, think about what they need, and think about how you're gonna get them what they need. And it can be a big thing. It can be they want to save the world, or it can be they want to have a hamburger tonight. Doesn't matter. Just think about somebody else, okay? And I wish, chi-ma-ru means, I wish they could get something that makes them happy. But they divided it, right? He divided it. It's very interesting. He said, sukha, or sukha-karana, the cause of happiness, and that's different. That's a different thing. So you can do this prayer in two pieces. The meditation is in two pieces, okay? Like, my friend wants to get rich. My friend wants love. They want a big house, okay? That happiness would be a big house. But then they have to find the cause, okay? What's the cause of getting a big house? How do you get a big house? My students gave me a house, free. Last year? Last year, they just gave me a house. Like, I never had a house. And they just gave me, like, I said, how much do I owe? They said, nothing. Here's the key. It's yours. Just take it. New house. It's small, but it's on a mountain. It's on a very big mountain. It's on the edge of the mountain. It's very good for learning. And you sleep, you can see the stars this way. Out the window, out the door. It's because it's so high. And then, how do you get a house? What's the daily view means? What's the cause of what you're doing? What's the cause of getting a house? How do you make a 250 million dollar company? Work hard. Invest sharply. Advertise better than other people. Invent the iPad. Point four eight million. Make it thinner this year. No, why? How do you get, how do I get money? How do you get a house? That's the daily view. The cause of it. The cause of what you're doing. What do you have to do if you want a house? [Говорящий 2] Keep the house while it comes like it has. [Говорящий 1] Yeah. Find someone who needs a place to stay and help them. That's all. That's the cause of a house. It's not money. You don't need money to have a house. I don't have any money. That guy has. How? Find out who needs a place to stay and help them. That's all. How do you get money? Help other people get money. That's all. Don't worry about yourself. Just help them get money, you see? This is the cause. So you are praying in the prayer. You have to have two parts, okay? There's two parts. You think of anybody, you think of somebody who wants something. This person wants a flute, okay? They want a new flute. What's the cause of a flute? Do you know the karma for a flute? It's very special karma. You have to say nice things to other people, okay? If you want to have a good singing voice or something, the cause is to say nice things to other people. I like your dress, or you know, you do a good handstand. [Говорящий 2] I like your handstand. [Говорящий 1] No, just to speak kindly to other people, it will bring the flute. But you have to know this. You have to know the karma. Ye Li, you have to know what to do. So these are the causes. So when you do your meditation, you don't just say, oh, I wish he could have a car. You don't say that. I wish he could have a house. You say two parts. I wish he could have a house. I wish he understood how to get a house, okay? So that's a more powerful prayer. That's my three. My three is I want to give you something you want. But that's two steps. Number one, I want you to have a house. Number two, more important, I want you to know how to get a house. Which is what? How do you get a house? Find someone who needs a place to stay and help them. Help them to get a place to stay. That's all. Then a house will come. If you have money or you don't have money, the house will come to you. You don't have to worry. It will come. You can't stop it. You can't stop it. It will come. People give me cars all the time. It's crazy. I don't know what to do. I gave away, right? We have an electric car. So I gave you a car. I said, okay, let's give it to this guy. You can't stop it. I went to a yoga class a couple years ago. Some guy put $100,000 in my backpack, okay? You can't stop it. I don't know him. I never met him in my life, okay? It will come. It's the karma, right? The karma, the cause. So you are not just praying, oh, I wish we have a car. You say, I wish we had a car, and I wish we knew how to get a car, okay? Why are you doing this prayer? Why are you doing this prayer? Maitri, why are we talking about Maitri? Because it's a new year. What's going to happen in the new year? You're going to have problems, okay? Then, when you have a problem, just do this prayer. Stop thinking about yourself. And then you automatically, you feel happier. Immediately, you feel happier, okay? You can't sleep. So stop doing this prayer. Just in your, you know how you're laying on the bed, and you're staring at the ceiling, you know? And just start, ah, I wish my friend could get a car. But I wish he understood how to get the car. That's two steps. Maitri, that's two steps. I wish he could, I wish he could help, okay? Just, just, you know what other people want. To think about what other people want makes you happy. Chitta prasadam. It makes the mind pure, clean, happy, okay? It's so interesting, because usually we just, when we have a problem, we think about ourself, right? Oh, I have bad eyes. I have to get operation. I mean, don't think, don't worry about it. Think about somebody else. That's Maitri, okay? We do one more, then we maybe sing something, okay? [Говорящий 2] Geshe Michael? [Говорящий 1] Yeah. [Говорящий 2] May I ask a question? Sure. So do we say the prayer in Sichuan, or do we say it in English? [Говорящий 1] Oh, just in your heart, in your mind. It doesn't have to be, if you forget a word, it's okay. Okay, we just say, I wish somebody, I wish, I wish my friend could get lucky more than that. His wife, he's chasing this girl for six weeks, you know? It can be stupid things, okay? Somebody asked my lawyer. I have a friend, yes? All he wants is one thing. What does he want? Coffee. He just wants coffee. Coffee bad for him. No, it's okay. You pray for his coffee, it's all right. It makes him happy. It's okay. Pray for the coffee. So you don't have to get the words just right, okay? Just when you are thinking, you feel unhappy. Why are you gonna do this? Because you feel unhappy. When are you gonna do this? When you have a problem. When are you gonna have a problem? Lots of problems. It's a new year, okay? Problems will come, right? Problems always come. And then how to stay happy? How to stay happy, you know, when you have problems? Pray for somebody else. It doesn't matter. Okay, I pray you have coffee. I pray you know how to get coffee. How do you get coffee? Do you take money? Do you need money to get coffee? No, sometimes you go to the Starbucks and somebody buy the coffee for you. If you have money, can you get coffee? No, sometimes you go and they don't have the coffee. It's not money. It's you make tea for somebody. You say, would you like some tea? And you make tea for them. Then you can have Starbucks for like three years. Because karma always grows. Karma always grows. So the first part, my treat, you pray for somebody. I wish they could get what they want. To wish they could get what they want, it means you have to know what they want. To know what they want means you have to watch other people, what they want. In this system, you become expert spy. You are watching people, what they like. Oh, she likes jasmine tea. She likes, what they call, green tea with, what do you call, roasted soy milk? What do you call it? [Говорящий 2] Roasted rice. [Говорящий 1] What do you always order? Soy milk. They burn it. [Говорящий 2] Yeah. [Говорящий 1] So then, she's gotta have that. And then, to do this prayer, first you're gonna have to watch your friends and see what they like. And already you became a better person. And already you became a happier person. Because you're not worrying about what you want. You're looking about, okay, tonight I have to pray for them. What kind of car do you want? I want a Mercedes. Oh yeah, I forgot. Okay, what model? What's here? And then, when you're asking those questions, you're not thinking about yourself. And already it makes you happier. So to pray that someone else gets what they want, you have to know what they want. To know what they want, you have to pay attention to them. And then you're not paying attention to yourself, already you're happy. It's very beautiful. It's very profound. It's very deep. It makes you happy, okay? All right, second step. What is step two? Karuna. Karuna. I shouldn't have erased the whole thing. Need more mercy, I have to memorize this. Tara, you can memorize it, Tara, you can memorize it. And Jack, you. I'll write it out for you later, okay? Okay, say it. Just repeat for good luck, okay? Start with Mangala, right? Sengchen. Sengchen. Tamche. Tamche. Dunya. Dunya. Dang. Dang. Dunya. Dunya. Ki. Ki. Gyu. Gyu. Dang. Dang. Chalma. Chalma. Chimaru. Chimaru. So in Sichuan language, this is how you say. Karuna, okay? Karuna. Karuna is step number two. How many steps in this method? Four. Four steps. Okay, now I'm number two. Karuna. What does mitra mean in modern Hindi? Modern Sanskrit. Friend. It comes from mit, the root mit, which means to mix, to mix up. Like mitunam means join it together. So mit means to mix. Mitri means mix with somebody else, become friends. Karuna came into English as cover, and it means to protect somebody. Wish to protect somebody. So, sengchen tamche means every what? Person. Bog person, cow person, fish person. Okay, every person. Chal, chal means shouldn't have. Shouldn't have. Dumeo means dukkha, suffering. And dukkha, karuna, the cause of suffering, okay? So what's this one mean? This is step two of the prayer, okay? If you did step one, but you didn't fall asleep yet, you can do step two. If step one makes you fall asleep, that's okay. You can stop. Okay, step two is think about the problems that people have. Like, oh, my friend has this problem. Like, my friend's husband never listened to them. He always said bad things to them. Always criticized them. For the first year, he was writing her love poem and telling her how beautiful she is. Now he just complained to her all the time. So my friend has this problem. Dumeo dan jamnachimanam. I pray she doesn't. I pray he changes. I pray she doesn't have it. Dumeo. And I pray that she gives up the cause of that. See, karuna, the dukkha. I pray that she gives up the cause of that suffering. What's the cause of that suffering? See, you can say, karuna. See, maitri wants to give somebody something. You want a car, here's a car. And by the way, give people rides so you can get the car. That's maitri. Karuna means you have a problem, I want to take away your problem. That's karuna. So that's the difference between the first two. Maitri wants to give something. Karuna wants to take something away. So let's say her husband starts criticizing her. That's the dumeo. That's the dukkha. Then what's the cause of that dukkha? See, you don't want just to take away the criticism. You want to take away the reason why she's getting criticized. What's the reason why she's getting criticized? Guess. Why is her husband, her husband used to tell her, I love you, you're so beautiful, I like the way you dress, I like the music you listen to, I like the way you cook, I like everything about you. Then after two years, he's like, I hate everything about you. Why does it change? She changed. What? She criticized other people. That's all. That's the cause of your husband criticizing you. It's only one thing. It's that you're not criticizing somebody else. Then you aren't praying for your friend. I hope her husband stops criticizing her. But I hope she figures out why he's criticizing her, which is that she's criticizing somebody else. At work, maybe, at work, or? No, no, she never criticizes people. Her husband criticizes her all the time. Seed is smaller than the tree. The seed is smaller than the tree. The shikwa seed is small. The shikwa is big. It's a, she doesn't have to criticize a lot. If she criticized sometimes, he'll criticize her? 10 times. All the time. Okay? Because the shikwa seed is this big, and the shikwa is this big. That's nature, okay? So then I pray her husband stops criticizing her. But I pray that she stops making the cause for the criticism. So that's the second part. My tree has two parts. Karuna has two parts. That's, which part is more important? The cause is more important. If she figures it out, she can do anything. If you're a stupid monk, lazy monk, you can make tons of money without telling me how. Just find out the cause. Give, make people, help people make money. She can change her husband. Just, she has to stop the small, she's doing a small one. She's doing the seed of the shikwa. She's the shikwa. She's the, husband is a watermelon. And her, maybe she's criticizing her mother once every three or four days. She calls her mother and says, why don't you take the taxi? I told you not to drive. You're too old to drive. I told you, you're too old. But you stay in a bad way. Then your husband criticizes you. And you have to find out the connection. So you stop it. Okay, so you're praying. You're praying. You're praying. When do you do this one? When do you do karuna? When you have any problem. When you have any problem, okay? And you finished my tree, okay? You have my tree in there. Still you don't feel happy? Do karuna. Okay? Just go to karuna. My tree means you can't sleep at night and you feel lousy. Okay, I pray that they get the car. I pray they give people rides so they can get the car. Still didn't fall asleep. Okay. I pray her husband doesn't criticize her. And I pray she figures out why he's criticizing her. And then she can stop that. That's all, that's karuna, okay? That's karuna. So you finished your tree. You want to do, can we do this one? You want to do this one? Huh? You're not doing it? Okay. So number three. What's the third one? Mudita. Mudita. Mudita means joy. Joy, happy. Extremely happy. Mud comes from mud. Mud means to be happy. It came into English as mead. And the word for honey, which is what mead is made of, which is mead. Or meow in Spanish. So it means happy, like crazy happy. It means drunk happy. Mead. Okay. Okay, this is really serious, okay? This is really serious. So they get a car. Or they get a house. Or their husband becomes very sweet again, like he used to be. Okay? Everything changes. But still there are big problems. There are much bigger problems, right? You have to give up. Everybody has to give up. Even if you get along with your husband for 20 years, 30 years, 40 years, someone's going to die. Maybe you, maybe the husband. And you're both going to get old. So, you know, you're both walking like this. No, it will come to all of us. It will come to all of us. You can do yoga. You spend three hours doing yoga because you want to stay young, but the three hours is taken from your life. And after the yoga class, you're three hours older. And you do enough of those, you will die. Really. Or you'll get old. You'll get old. You keep spending those three hours from your credit card. It will finish. Credit card will finish. And then you'll be old. So there are bigger problems, you know, like death. Okay, so you get a car, but what does it mean if you die? Or your husband is nice, and what does it mean if you die? Or he dies, or you both get old. You know, there are bigger problems. What does it mean if I'm happy, and I'm well fed, and I got my Starbucks medium hot chocolate today? Which I do. I never talk like period over Singapore unless I'm penalized. So what does it mean if somebody's having a war in another country? You see, people are bombing each other. Someone's blowing themself up to kill other people. Someone is killing themself to kill other people. How can I be happy living in Singapore, having my hot chocolate, if there are people, you know, not very far away, who are strapping explosives to their body and blowing themselves up so they can kill 25 other people that they never met, you know? Maybe some children, you know? So how can I stay in a world like that? There are bigger problems, you know, than your car. I think we should solve all of them. I'm not one of those religious people, you know? I think you should have a great car, you should have a great house, and you shouldn't get old, and you shouldn't die, and you should stop the war in Iraq. I want everything. I don't say you should stop the war in Iraq and not have a car. I think that's dumb. I think everyone should have everything they want. So this is a prayer that takes it all to a higher level. Okay? May every person have ultimate happiness, ultimate happiness. What's that mean? Don't have to die. Don't have to die. Kaladandha, kaladandha in Sanskrit. What's kaladandha mean in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika? Kaladandha. What's dandasana? What's dandasana? What's dandha? Dandha. It's stick, plane. Okay, dandha means stick. Kala means what? Kala chakra, kala? Time. It means time, but it means death. So kaladandha means take a stick and beat death to death. It's very famous in Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Hatha Yoga, anyway, how do you say the egg of the world? Dandha, dandha, the egg in Sanskrit. Yeah, egg of the world, there's a word. Anyway, we'll figure it out later. Brahmandevicharatante, Hatha Yoga Prabhavata, okay? Brahmande, the egg of the world, the egg of Brahma. So anyway, they are one in the world because kaladandha, they have beat death to death. So these are the big goal. We want to stop death. So this prayer is different. This prayer is may, then you choose somebody who has cancer or you choose someone who got old, you know, and you pray for them and you say, or you choose someone who just got bored because it doesn't matter. They're all going to die. And you say, may they not die, may they not get old, okay? May they find the secret to change them because that's what yoga is supposed to be. That's the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. It says, Brahmandevicharatante, sorry. Yeah, Brahmandevicharatante, Hatha Yoga Prabhavata. They are empowered by Hatha Yoga and kaladandha. They have killed death, okay? So it's supposed to be, if you understand yoga properly, you can change the body into life. Supposed to be, you can change the body and not die. Okay, so this, in the third part, karuna, sorry, mudita, why do they call it joy to pray for death? Why do they call it mudita to pray for, make this prayer in your meditation. It makes you really happy. I mean, to pray there's no war in the world and nobody's hungry and nobody's going to die and nobody's going to get old, that's a big prayer. That's better than a Mercedes, you know? Or a husband who doesn't criticize her. You know, that's a big, that's big time. That's the big thing, you know? So that, if you do that prayer, you feel really happy. You feel really, really happy. So you do this prayer. So I wish everybody in the world didn't have to die. And it's possible. You can change. Brahma devicharitante means, there are people who did that already. And they are walking the egg of Brahma. It means, that's how the Hatha Yoga opens. There are people around us, like Goraksha. We were talking today about Gorakpur. There is a yogi, Goraksha. In Tibet, they call Ba Ka. Ba means cow, go. Raksha means protector, kyong. Bakyong is his Tibetan name, and Goraksha. And he's supposed to be, he, Goraksha finished, he reached the goal of yoga, and he's walking around somewhere, disguised as one of you, okay? I think he admired one of you. But, you know, he tries to be anonymous. And he helps people, he teaches people. It doesn't have to be like this. It could be teaching many ways, right? So, maybe someone who pushed you on the bus is Goraksha. I don't know. But, there are supposed to be people who already didn't, they already changed. And the body is not going to die. So you, the third part of the prayer is that, I pray that the big problems in the world would stop. No hunger, no death, no war. How are we doing on time? What time is it? [Говорящий 2] 6.30. 6.30? [Говорящий 1] Yeah. It's okay? Can we just keep going? Yes. You have refreshment after? Okay. Yeah. What's the last one? [Говорящий 2] Upeksha. Upeksha. This is hard. Upeksha. [Говорящий 1] You ready? Senchen. Senchen. Senchen. Good. Tangchen. Tangchen. Nyerin. Nyerin. Chakdang. Chakdang. Dang. Dang. Channa. Channa. Chimang. Chimang. Senchen Tanche means? All people. All the people. Cow people, horse people, fish people. Shrimp, even shrimp people. Okay. Don't eat people. All right, Senchen Tanche, all people. This is beautiful, okay? Nyerin means, nyerin means people who are close to them. They're friends and they're family. Nyerin means you're friends and you're family. Then what's ring mean? Opposite. Those who are far away. People you don't like, people you don't know. Ring means far away. Nyerin means close. Friends and family. Ring means I don't know you, I don't care about you. Or maybe I don't like you. That's ring. Far away. They are far away. Nyerin means close. Ring means far away. Chat means attached to friends and family. Don means don't like people who are far. So this one goes to here and this one goes to here, okay? Feel attached to the ones, the loved ones. And feel don't like the other people, okay? That's the opposite of upeksha. What's upeksha mean? Upa means what? Iksh means what? Upa means up. Up came from upa. Up means up or over. And iksha means to look or the eye. Iksha came into German as augen, augen. And then came into English as eye, E-Y-E. Or optical. So optical comes from iksha. So upa iksha means, upeksha means overlook. And it means don't worry about it. I like this person, I don't like this person. I wanna help you or I don't wanna help you. Upeksha means equal towards everybody. Treats everybody the same. Overlooks the difference. Upa iksha, the difference between different people. I don't treat you nice because you're my friend and I don't treat you bad because you're not my friend. Upeksha means equal to all. Why does it come last? It's a beautiful question. You're praying that everybody would overcome the tendency to love the people who are close to them and dislike the people who are there. But why does it come last? It's more fair to everybody. Instead of just love someone, pray for someone, but actually this is for everybody, for all mankind. All bug kind, also. Yeah, okay, good. So what number four means is that do the first three for everybody. Why does upeksha come last? Because you have to do this prayer for everybody. So I'm giving you, when the Lama teach this in the monasteries, they say, okay, at the beginning, you do the first three for your friends. Because you're not strong enough, it's like trying to do a handstand in your first yoga class. You're not strong enough. You have to build up your strength. So first do it for your friends. I hope my friend gets a Mercedes. He wants a Chinese fluid. I hope he gets a Chinese fluid. I hope so. And I hope he doesn't, I hope he finishes his money problem so he can have the Chinese fluid. Those are, that's my three, I call them that. So they say at the beginning, you pray, and I hope he doesn't die. I hope he can live in a world where there's nobody having a war. So I make those three prayers for him. But then number four, upeksha means, but also the person I don't like. That other Buddhist teacher that I'm jealous of, who knows more Sanskrit than I do. Even I will pray for him. Okay, like that. You should pray for everybody, like the equal. So in the beginning, you can't do it. But if you really have trouble sleeping, and you want powerful meditation, then think of somebody you hate. Think of somebody you don't like. The last person, your ex-boyfriend, or the last person who gave you trouble, or your boss at work, someone who gave you trouble. And you say, and you think, I hope you get what you want. What do they want? They want a Jaguar, they don't want a Mercedes. How do you know? I've paid attention to them yesterday. I don't like them, but I'm looking what they want. Why? Because I want to be happy. It makes me happy, okay? I look at the people I hate, I look at the people I don't like, and I see, what do they want? What makes them happy? They like, what do they call that? Dosa, quiche, cerveza. They like Mexican beer, okay? Okay, I don't like beer, and I don't like them. But I hope they get their beer. Like that, okay? Beer is a bad thing, and they're a bad person. But I hope they get their beer. Like, I pay attention to them. Even my enemy, even the person I don't like. If you really want to be happy, if you really want to sleep well, if you really want to have a good year without any sadness or depression, every time you feel sad, every time you feel upset, oh, they canceled my talk at the show and chuckled with all the good people. Ningbo is gonna fight with all those guys for other women. And then, the most powerful thing, think about someone you don't like. I said, I hope you get what you want. I hope you get a truckload of Mexican beer, you know? And you have to visualize in the meditation this big truck is coming out, and all these guys, I don't think you are, I don't have any beer for you. And then you're gonna give them the beer. And you think about your enemy, that person with the, and then you feel really happy. Because to have an enemy makes you unhappy. Then if you keep praying for them, sooner or later, things are gonna change with them. The next time you see them, you're like, and they're like, and you're like, because you're seeing this beer truck, you know? Like someone you don't like, usually you look at like that thing, or you don't look at them, right? You go, but now you're like, and you're remembering the beer truck, but they don't know anything about the beer truck. And they're like, why is he smiling at me? Did he cheat me or something? [Говорящий 2] You know, they feel so happy, you know? [Говорящий 1] But you feel, already you feel happier, and you see them, and you're thinking, God, did you get the beer truck? I sent you a beer truck. And you feel happy. Instead of thinking bad thing about them, you have fantasy about doing something good for them. And then all these fantasies change your chitta prasadana, you become happy, and your mind becomes pure, okay? The mind becomes, you become happy all the time. It's, so when are you gonna do these four? What's gonna trigger the four? What's gonna make you think, how are you gonna remember to do these four? Any problem, any problem. You're so lucky, because problems will come constantly, and you don't have to remember to meditate. You don't have to get up and say, I'm gonna meditate at nine o'clock. You don't have to do that. Just wait for a problem, and they will come. And then say, what was I supposed to do? Let me see, is that my tree? Oh yeah, I was supposed to think about my friend. I hope they get what they want. And then the problem goes away. Because problem cannot survive unless you, if you stop thinking about, if you stop thinking about me, the problem can't survive. Problem can't stay. That lady, she's amazing. That lady in the park this morning, she's 70, 65, 65, 70 years old. She went into a three-year retreat. We built her a house, and she went in. Bye, see you in three years. And then she came out, said, something wrong with my heart, take me to the hospital. And they said, we have to cut right now. And then this morning, they wrote me an email, said, okay, I'm ready to go back to the gym. When? Tomorrow. I'm going back tomorrow. Okay. It's like she doesn't have, she's doing this meditation, and she's just happy. She's not like, oh, I'm sick, I feel so bad, and you know, they cut me today. She's not talking like that. She's like, I'm going back tomorrow. I'm going back to my cabin tomorrow. So like that, okay? All right. Since we have some time, I'll teach you the second part. All right. This meditation has four parts. Each part can be done in four different ways. Okay? And this is an ancient oral tradition, parampara. You can't learn it in a book. You learn it from your teacher. And it's very beautiful. So yoga center just says, maitri karuna mudita pekha. That's all it says. Then you learn all that long part about each one. And now there's more. Each one of the four can be done in four different ways. And it's even more beautiful. So since we have some time, we'll do that. It's very fun. So if you remember all of the first one, the first four all began, we all ended with chimalung. Chimalung means how nice it would be. How nice it would be if my worst enemy got the Mexican beer in a truck, came to his house, you know? And he just got drunk all day. These are bad things, but he wants that. So it's okay. Chimalung, chimalung means, wouldn't that be nice? That'd be nice. Why not? He's gonna die. I'm gonna die. Let him have his beer. Okay? He's a bad person. He bothers me. Let him have some beer. It's okay. We're all gonna die. Chimalung, why not? Chimalung means why not? Then step two, with each one of the four, you can say, kyorchik, say kyorchik. Kyorchik means it's gotta happen. It's gotta happen. So chimalung means it's a fantasy. Chimalung means a fantasy. Okay, you're all meditating. You can't sleep. You feel sad. Somebody canceled your Shaolin Temple 800 people. Because somebody in the Middle East had a revolution. It's not my fault. So, so chimalung, you can't sleep, and you say, okay, wouldn't it be nice if my friend got his beer? Okay, chimalung. Why not? Chimalung means why not? Kyorchik means it's gotta happen. It's gotta happen. Okay, so that's getting more, what do you call it? Concrete, right? It has to happen. It must happen. Kyorchik means it must happen. So now it's not a fantasy anymore. You're like, you decide. You know what? It's not just a cool idea. What if, what if the truck really came to his house? What if a big truck of beer really came to his house? It's gotta happen. You know, so, you know, sometimes you think doing something cool for somebody, and it's just a fantasy, right? Like your girlfriend, right? And you say, it's a holiday, and you say, you know, it'd be nice if I took her to the best restaurant. And then you, then the second step is, it's gotta happen. It's gonna happen. It's gotta happen. So it's not just a fantasy. It's like, Kyorchik is step number two. It's gotta happen. He's gotta get his beer, okay? And he's gonna get his flute, okay? And this person's gonna, their husband is gonna stop criticizing them. So it's not a fantasy anymore. You're not just thinking it at three o'clock in the morning when you can't sleep. It's like, Kyorchik, it's gotta happen. It's gotta happen. It's gonna happen. Even the crazy dream, like, no more people in the Middle East blowing themselves up. It's gotta happen. It's gonna happen. You just decide it's gonna happen, okay? Okay, number three. Say, daki. Daki. Chao. Chao. Daki. You gotta say it. Daki. Daki. Chao. Chao. Daki means me. Chao means gonna give it, done. I'm gonna give it. Let's call them together, you know? Step six of, hmm, artichoke's seven steps. To put it together. Haksan means. Yeah, haksan, okay? Those of you who care, you can shorten it to haksan. Haksan means, haksan is a beautiful word. In Tibet, haksan means, in Sichuan language, haksan means, I'll do it myself. Even if nobody helps me. If nobody helps me, I'm gonna get the beer truck to his house. I'm gonna do it, you know? And at first, it's a fantasy, jimaru. Then it's a decision. It's gotta happen. And then you look around, who's gonna arrange for a nice big beer truck to show up at somebody's house in Singapore? And you're like, don't worry, I'll take care of it. Haksan means, I'll take care of it. I'll take care of it. Nobody's gonna help me. Anybody wanna help me get this beer truck? A big truck of Mexican beer. He wants one beer, I'm gonna have a truck come to his house. Who wants to help him? Everybody's like, I'm kind of busy getting my own. That's kind of weird. Okay, I'll do it myself. I don't care if you help me or you don't help me. I'll do it myself. Haksan means, even if you criticize me, even if you go out of here and you say, you know, we actually went to this talk, we talked for three hours, he's talking about beer and he wants to deliver this truck and he was trying to get us involved in the talk. And then he's like nuts, you know? And then you start a big protest and you go to the newspapers, no monk should deliver beer to people's houses and you have a big protest. Even if you fight me, Haksan means, I'm gonna do it. Even if the whole world says you're crazy, like Gandhiji, right? If everybody say he's crazy and everybody say you're stupid, you say, I don't care, I'm gonna do it. It's important. I prayed for his beer. I decided it has to happen. Me by myself. If nobody else helped me, even if everybody else tried to stop me, I'm getting the beer truck to his house, you know? I mean, monk is gonna walk into the beer distributor, pay like $800 and they're gonna get the truck ready. I'm gonna do it. So Haksan means, I take responsibility. The buck stops here. In English, in America, they say the buck stops here. I don't care if nobody else cares. I don't care if nobody else wants to help me. I'm gonna do it. You have to have this attitude if you wanna do any great thing in the world, okay? Copper's gotta have this attitude. You know what I mean? If you wanna have a great yoga studio and you wanna make changes in people's minds and you wanna, you can't wait for other people and you can't give up if people criticize you. You just gotta do it. Just say, okay, I'm stupid. Okay, I'm a dreamer. Okay, we don't have money to do this. I'm still gonna get that. Haksan means, I'll take care. I'll figure it out. And it's a beautiful way to live. Just say, I'll take care of it. I have that all the time. I have all these projects, you know? We have no money, we have all these big projects. And then everybody's like, oh, we can't do that. I'm like, just go have a cocoa somewhere. I'll take care of it. We'll get it done, okay? You don't give up. And you take, dakichal means, I'll do it. That's the third part of the prayer. First part is fantasy. I wish my enemy could have what he wants. The second part is a decision, commitment. He will get what he wants. Number three is what? I'll make it happen. I'll make it happen. If nobody else will, if nobody else wants to do it, I'll make it happen. Dakichal. What's the last one? This is very beautiful, okay? And that's a good place to, I don't know. I think that's a good place to, that's like the dessert of the, of the Maitri Kulanam Gaudanamukha Dalai Lama. And then we'll take, then I'll take questions and answers, okay? So start thinking if you have any questions, okay? But I'm gonna teach you the last part. The last part is the most beautiful part. Okay, just for good luck, okay, you ready? Everybody. I don't know, in New York, they're all really loud and they talk loud. And then you go to like Mexico and they're like this. Okay, Singapore is like between. Say detar. Detar. Che. Che. [Говорящий 2] Nupar. Nupar. Lama. [Говорящий 1] Lama. Fe. Fe. Jinki. Jinki. Laptu. Laptu. So. So you can, short way, you can say jinki laptu. Jinki laptu. Jinki laptu. Detar. Che. Nupar. Okay, this is tough. So you have all these, you have all these wild prayers, right? I hope her husband stops criticizing her. I hope he gets his Mercedes. And I hope my enemy gets a big truckload of Mexican beer. I pray for that. Then maybe I don't have the strength to do it. Maybe I don't have the power to do it. Like, especially from number three. What was number three? Mudita. [Говорящий 2] What was mudita? [Говорящий 1] Yeah. Can I stop death? So then, mudita. Can I stop the big problems in the world, right? Can I stop people from dying? Getting old. Can I stop war? Can I stop hunger in this world? These are big things. Like, what if your prayer is to be? What if you can't do it? I don't have the power. I don't have the power to stop death in the world. Maybe I don't have the power. Or maybe I don't have the, maybe I don't have enough money to get a truckload of Mexican beer. Like, I could buy 24 bottles or something. But a whole truck. Like, maybe I don't have, or maybe I don't have enough strength in myself to love my enemy, right? Maybe I don't have enough strength in myself to pray for the person I don't like. I have trouble, myself. I try to do this for people I don't like. Halfway through, I start getting angry again. I forget about the fear, and I just, like, God, I hate those people. And I forget about, I'm supposed to be praying for them. So sometimes we don't have the power. We don't have the money, or we don't have the power, or we don't have the inner strength to do these things. So, the fourth part is the most important part. First part is fantasy. Second part is commitment. Third part is, I take responsibility. But the fourth part is the most important part. And it's, I'm asking for help. Jingilatme, I'm asking for help. I need help. I'm not strong enough to love my enemy. And I'm not strong enough, I don't have enough money to get a beer truck. And I definitely can't stop the war in your life. I'm not strong enough. So I pray you help me. You're praying for help. Who, to who? Say, Lama? Lama. Ha. Ha. Lama? Lama. Lama, the Sanskrit is guru. Lama, like Dalai Lama, Lama means teacher. Lama means guru. Ha means deva. [Говорящий 2] Deva. [Говорящий 1] Devata. Ishta devata. Your private angel. The one that you, the one that you have a connection. It could be Tara, it could be Jesus, it could be Mohammed, it doesn't matter. It could be Lao Tzu, doesn't matter. Whoever. It doesn't matter. Ha, ishta devata means the person you have a connection with. It could be Guanyin, Kuan-Ti-Tsai, De-Sa. Could be anything, don't know. But who you feel, who's your own ishta? Ishta means you have your own, I have my own. They're not the same. Depends on which country you come from or where you were born or who you feel good. Who makes you feel good? And then guru means your teacher. Your own teacher. So everybody in your life, probably the most important job you have is to find your teacher. And it has to be someone who fits you. In Tibet they say a glove, everybody wears a different glove. Somebody has fat hand, somebody has thin hand, somebody has small hand, somebody has big hand. Everybody needs their own teacher. So it should be a teacher that you feel is your heart teacher. We call it sawi nama in Tibet. Who is your personal teacher? You have to find. And if you don't have one, you have to find one. So your job, if you don't have personal teacher, you have heart, we call heart teacher. Then you have to find them and you have to look for them. And don't be lazy and don't be satisfied easily. Check out many, many teachers. Spy on them. Find out all the gossip about them. Ask people. These are a big thing. It's like getting married. You shouldn't just marry the first guy. You should find out, is there any problem with him or maybe he has some problem with her, or you should be. It's a big deal to find your heart teacher. It's a big deal to get married. To find a heart teacher is more difficult. Than getting married. So you should check out the person. You should spy on them. You should ask many people. Find out what they're doing. Google everything. And no, it's a good thing. We are lucky nowadays. You can check everything. Find a good one. Find a good person. And find the one that fits you. And then that becomes your day-to-day. It's the day-to-day. They become your personal angel. And then make a connection with them. I found mine. My monk teacher. I have many teachers. My Ishti Devata is not a monk. My Ishti Devata is a lady. I met her when I was 16. I didn't ever heard of Buddhism. I still have the same one. So it could be anybody. It doesn't have to be dressed in some clothes. It could be anybody. It could be a mother. It could be a father. It could be a sister. But you have to find your heart teacher. And when you find them, you have to go there. So I found my, when I found my Tibet teacher, my monk teacher, it's not my main teacher. And then I said, where do you live? And they said, New Jersey. Then New Jersey is the worst place in America. They call, they have a bad name, okay, I'll tell you. It's called armpit of America. Because it smells. Whole place smells because they make gasoline there. So it's the place in America which smells bad. And they said, you have to come to New Jersey. I said, I was living in California. I was surfing. I said, that's the last place I want to come in the world is New Jersey. If you want to learn, you have to come to New Jersey. So I went. I stayed there for 30 years, okay. The worst place. But my teacher's there. So that's all. You have to go. I gave up my surfboard. My brother broke it. And I went to New Jersey. And it smells bad. But that's where the teacher is. So you have to, so the only person who can give you the power to do these difficult things is your own heart teacher. You have to find your own Lao Tzu. You have to find that one. And then they can give you power. Because what gives you the power is your love for them or your belief in them. So they can be a stupid person or they can be a goof off person or they can be criminal. It doesn't matter. If you have respect and you serve them and you love them and you listen to them, then they can give you power. Even if they're a bad person, they can give you power because you are doing the right thing for them. You are respecting them and you are listening to them. Then this last part of the prayer, right? Four-part meditation. It's, de tar che nyu pa la ma fe ching gi lap tu su. De tar che nyu pa means make me have the strength to do all these things. La ma fe means my angel, my teacher, my heart teacher. Ching gi lap tu su means bless me, bless me. Please give me the power. I don't have the power to love my enemy. I don't have the power to wish the truckload of beer on my enemy. I don't have the power. I wish I had the power. Who's gonna give you the power? Your teacher. Your teacher can give you all the power. I don't know. You can say, I don't know how to fix the world. I don't know how to stop hunger. Or I don't know how to stop all the violence and misery. But then you just ask your teacher. Even if your teacher's a bad person, if you ask them with faith, with belief, then they can give you power. You can get the power. So the last part of the maitri karuna muddhi prapeksha is please give me power. Last thing, and then I'll take some questions, okay? That's also in a yoga class. I mean, if you come to yoga here and you take a class, respect the teacher. Even if younger than you or even if, doesn't matter. Just respect him. Listen to them. Help them clean up the room or help them. And then you will get power. Whatever yoga you want or you want to do, or you want to learn some new asana or, even if the teacher is a lousy teacher, if you respect them, they become a good teacher. They change. Like me. Say tse. Tse. Me. Me. Shi. Shi. Tse. Tse. Me. Me. Shi. This meditation has its own name. It's not mentioned in the Yoga Sutra. It has its own name. The meditation is very famous. It's very, very old. It's thousands of years old. It comes in many famous books, like Abhidharmakosha by Vasubandhu and many other books. Asanga, Maitreya. It's called Tse me shi. Tse me means, has no limit. Infinite. Infinite. Tse me means infinite. Shi means four. Four part infinite meditation. Four part infinite meditation. And then there are many, many old, old conversations in the sutras and the shastras. Why they call, why do they call infinite? Why is this meditation called infinite? And the answer, the answer is because you can make infinite karma. The karma can be infinite. Karma has no end. If you practice these four, the karma has no end. So most karma has an end. You give somebody, you give somebody a ride. Small seed, shikha seed. Small watermelon seed. You give somebody a ride. That will bring you a car. You can get a car from that. If you do it the right way, okay, we'll talk about that on the, Tuesday. What day? Tuesday and Wednesday? Tuesday and Wednesday? We're supposed to go to Jakarta and we're supposed to come back. Okay. You can learn the technique on Tuesday and Wednesday. How to turn one ride into a car. Because there's a way. Because a shikha, a watermelon seed can make a watermelon. A small buddhi can make a car. You can make a car. You can make a house. But then it finishes. When a seed grows into a tree, what happens to the seed? It's finished. That's it. You give somebody a ride or you find somebody a place to stay. Then you can get a car or you can get a house. But then it's finished. Then the house will get old. Then the car will break. It's finished. You see? The karma is planted. Seed is planted. It grows. This tree gets old. The tree falls down. It's finished. But not here. This one doesn't finish. It's called infinite. Se me means infinite. She means four-step meditation. Karma never ends. Why? Can you guess why? And then we'll just do questions, okay? Why? Why is it? Why is the karma infinite? How did each one start? How did each person start? What person? How did they start? What was the first word? Every person. So now, there's a trick, okay? There's a skill. You have to know. When you pray that your friend's husband stops criticizing her, right? How many people has done that? Two. It's just two. It's the husband and the wife. It's just two people. But in your heart, in your mind, when you make the prayer, you say, starting with them. Everybody. And not just in this world. So how many bugs in this world? How many fish? How many birds? How many people? There's a number. It's not infinite. If you count all the bugs, all the fish, all the birds, all the people, all the cows, there's a number. I don't know what's in the number. I don't know. Billions, trillions, right? If you count all the little fish, it's trillions and trillions, but there's a number. But this meditation is bigger than that. You don't limit it to this planet. You say, I pray for her, and I pray that her husband stops criticizing her. And then you send it to all the worlds now. All the worlds. Don't think this is the only world where there's people. Don't be, what do you call? In Tibet, they say, don't be like a frog in a well. Don't think your well is the whole world, right? Then, what do you call? What's it called? What's the old Indian book that tells stories? In the? Jataka. Jataka. It's before the Jataka. Jataka. Jataka. Jataka. Jataka. Jataka. Jataka. Jataka. Jataka. Helpful stories. And in the story, there's a hill of Ganesha. Then in the story, there's a frog. And he lives in a well. And he's the king of the well. He said, I own the whole world. I'm the king of the well. Then the frog came, Mr. Frog. Kappa. And he leaned down and he said, who are you? Who do you mean who am I? I'm the king. Of what? The world. This is the world. My well is the whole world. The Kappa. You didn't say anything. This is not the world, you know? Then he, he picked him. He said, you want to see the world? I'll show you the world. He flew down and around. He picked up the frog. He took him to the ocean. That's water. Then the frog opened his eyes. Then they say his head blew up. He's a very cruel. I mean, many bad things happen at the end. I was just in one little, I was just a little frog. The ocean is a big thing. So, I mean, this is just, you only know one world. Don't think, I mean, stupid to think it's the only one. There are countless worlds. There are many, many worlds. And then people live there. Maybe they know about us. Maybe they don't. Probably they know about us and know about us. They are watching us. They have their own ways to watch us. And they are watching us. So when you make the prayer that your friend's husband stop criticizing her, at that same time, you say, hey, why not all the husbands in all of the worlds stop criticizing their wives? Not just this one. Don't be like a frog. There are many worlds, you know? And make a prayer for everybody. Everybody should have a place to live. Every bug, every cow, every bird, fish, they should have, fish should have a nice little wet place. Bird should have an air place. Cow should have a dirty place. Everybody should have a place to stay. And then make the prayer like that. And then the karma is completed. Then the happiness is completed. Then you will be so happy. You'll just be happy all the time. You'll never be unhappy. So, when are you going to do this meditation? We have a problem. We have a problem. Do you have to go into full lotus? No, you can be on the bus, okay? You can be driving. You can even sit in the emergency room, the toilet. I do a lot of meditation there. People are waiting a long time outside. I take the time to pray for everybody, you know? And you can do it anywhere. You don't have to be in a big full lotus or airplane. You can do it anywhere. And it just makes you happy. I think the best time to do it is when you have a big problem, and especially when you can't sleep, if you have trouble sleeping, or you feel unhappy, like they just canceled your talk at the show. And, okay. Okay, I hope they all get what they want. And fantasize about it, and then pray for it. Then you just feel happy all the time. Then it's not such a big deal. Okay, I can go somewhere else. It's all right. I can give a talk somewhere. It's all right. You just, the problems get small. The problem becomes small. Okay, any questions? What time? Give an hour. Give an hour. Okay. [Говорящий 2] 45 minutes. [Говорящий 1] Do you need a break? No. Well, you get a break. No. I think we take a small break. Let's do that. Let's take a 15-minute break. And just stand up, or go to the, do the meditation. There's some refreshments there. And then come back in 15 minutes. Okay.
