[Говорящий 1] We were working on the second of the six perfections, and we had 10 parts to that. And we got through five of them. So now we have to start the other five. All right. I don't know if you noticed, the first three, you do with your body. You see, respecting life, respecting other people's things, and then sexual purity are all done with your body. And then the next four are going to be done by talking with your speech. So we finished two of them. Number five is mostly done by talking to people and getting them back together. Then number six is kind words. And they say two kinds of kind words. One are words that are kind and you mean them kindly. And then secondly, when you're among friends, you can use really bad language, foul language, but you mean it in a very happy way. Like, I could tell you all the names that I had in the university, but I can't say them in the public. So like that. Anything that's meant kindly, OK? Words that are meant kindly. And the opposite of that is things you say to hurt people, OK? But kind words are like that. They say if you speak kind words, there'd be four different things that would happen to you. We're talking about how the imprints come back up in your mind. And I thought maybe I'll give you a little bit about that, OK? So let's say A, B, C, D. First one is, A, this is I'm talking about the result of kind words. Like if you put an imprint in your mind, subconscious, for kind words, by giving kind words to someone, then what will come out later, OK? What will make you see things? And first one is a good place after you die. When you die, all the imprints that have been in your mind go through a major change. You see what I mean? Like the imprint, you have an imprint in your mind that makes you see this pen as good. And do you know Nick Ribusch? So his mother comes up to me, just like you actually. She's in Australia. And she calls me after a talk. There's this big talk in Melbourne Hall in Melbourne. And then she calls me and she says, I must meet you tomorrow. And I don't know, she's 85 or something. And she comes into the room. I'm sitting having breakfast. And she sits down and she says, I just want to know one thing. And I said, what? And she says, what about the pen? Is that an imprint? You see what I mean? I'm not asking whether the pen is good or bad. I'm saying, wouldn't the pen have to be coming from an imprint? And I said, exactly. You're exactly right. Even if you see a pen itself, that's coming from something in your mind. Why? What if, like that dog who was in here last night. And I waved this thing in front of the dog. What does a dog see? I mean, a dog can't conceive of a pen. A dog can't see its function, or how it's used. To a dog, it's something like very uncomfortable to chew on, it's metal. Try to chew on it, reject it, not interesting. You see what I mean? So you even have an imprint which is running the pen, as well as whether the pen is good or bad. And that's important. This is what I call Mrs. Rebusch's question. Her son is a very famous editor of Buddhist books, and things like that, for the last 25 years. And she got it. And she said, OK, that's all I needed to know. And she went home. And I tried to give her a tea, and she said, no, no, I just wanted to know about the pen. She made like an hour trip to ask about the pen, you know. And she's right. You see, they have one imprint that tells you whether it's good or bad. [Говорящий 2] What's the imprint you make on the pen? [Говорящий 1] Something in... [Говорящий 2] It's gone. [Говорящий 1] Yeah. Yeah. This is just a cylinder, if you think about it. You see? It's just a cylinder. And what's making you see it as a pen is an imprint. You see what I mean? That's a little bit deeper. I didn't want to get into it yesterday, but, you know, second day is OK. The reason you see it as a pen is because of some imprint in your mind. And we say that when you die, a lot of your imprints change radically. A lot of imprints wear out at the same time. The imprint to see your body as alive changes. The imprint to see your family goes away. The imprint to see the Galway city goes away. All of those imprints finish at the same time. We call that death. That's what death is. You see what I mean? Then new imprints start to come up. You see what I mean? And they're like deeper imprints. And that's what we call... You can call it reincarnation or rebirth, doesn't matter like that. I don't care what you call it. The soul or the mind goes on. It does not stop. In the soul, if you want to call it the soul, are stored all the imprints of what you've done in this life. And this is the same that Jesus was talking about. It's just how you explain the process, right? So your soul is there. The body dies. The soul stays. The soul has all the imprints in it. And then you start to see new things, depending on what imprints you have. So the first... We say the way the imprint comes back to you, many of them come up after you die, right after you die, okay? And then you see yourself in a new place. And the Christians call hell... If you read Dante's description of hell, and then you read what we call Vasubandhu's description of hell, they're exactly the same. These people are thousands of miles apart, 16, 15 centuries ago, is when Vasubandhu lived. And the description is exactly the same. So it's sort of like, sends a chill up your spine, you know? You know there couldn't be any direct contact between these two people, and here's a description of hell. So where does hell come from? We don't believe that hell was built by somebody, like by some crazy guy, who, you know, dug a big hole and built this place, or something like that. We believe it's just a perception, in the same way that this pen is a perception. You see what I mean? And if you do have a soul, the soul does not die after your body dies. It's still full of imprints, and then they make you see something new. They make you see something different. So, if you've been careful to speak kindly to other people throughout your life, then the imprints there are very good. You see what I mean? And this applies to all ten of those things we're talking about. The imprints are very good, and then you see something very sweet after you die, okay? Second one, people around you speak kindly, okay? You begin—and you would guess that. You see, if there's an imprint in your mind from speaking kindly to others, then people around you start speaking kindly. It's very interesting. And this is a very interesting process. Like, we had one... I told you about the student who was a really bad girl, and was in my company, and then changed, you know? So, we used to go to shops together, and the person would turn to her and say something like, you know... They'd start to have an argument within a minute. You see what I mean? They'd say, Oh, I think that's a really stupid dress you have on. They'd say, No, I think your shirt is really dumb. And then they would start to talk like this to each other. And then the person would turn to me and say, You know, sir, what can I do for you? There's a sale on today. You can have this half price, you know? And we'd be standing there next to each other, you know? And this is a result of imprints in your mind. You see what I mean? This is a result of some... If you've spoken unkindly to other people long enough, then every time you go into a shop, every time you meet somebody, every time you're on the phone with—what do you call it? Customer service? Your call is important to us? When we're going to make you wait for the next 10 minutes? You see what I mean? That comes from speaking unkindly to people. And then the person who just calls and gets through the first time, it comes from speaking kindly to people. Did you have a question? [Говорящий 2] When you say to speak... [Говорящий 1] Are we talking sincerely? Speaking kindly means sincerely. Also, speaking kindly to a student who's been bad, and you want to help them, and you're correcting them, we call it shi gye wang tak. To be a lama, you have to be shi gye wang tak. Shi means there's times when you have to be very nice to the student. You know, peaceful. Gye means there's times when you have to be generous, like take them out to dinner and spend money for everybody. Wang means there's times when you have to be a little strong. Like, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, when he speaks, he can be strong. In the monastery, especially. And then tak means there's a time to slap him on the head also, called fierce. And these are four different... Shi gye wang tak is very famous. If you're kind to the person for any one of those four reasons, in your heart, then it's a kind word. You see what I mean? Yeah. Totally depends on your intention. I don't know if you've been in the checkout line in the markets in the US, and they say, have a nice day. And it means, get the hell out of the line. There's people behind you. It means it's a way to move them out of the line, and it's the most unkind thing. You know, and they mean it unkindly. It's like, have a nice day. You know? You know, it's a... That's not a kind word, okay? That's the opposite. Yeah, okay. Number three. You get in the habit of doing it, okay? You start to do it more and more, okay? You get in the habit of speaking kindly. And these are good habits and bad habits. I remember when I was a child, and I lived in a place called Arizona, and this is a desert place, and we had palm trees and empty... In those days, the place was all empty, and we would go out in the back, and there would be these doves that would fly, and they would nest, and there was this boy next door, and he would always bring a gun with him, and he would wait until the nest was full, and then the mother wouldn't go away because the mother wanted to protect the children, and then he would wait there, and then he would sit there and shoot the dove, you know? And we were just aghast, you know? We were like, how can you do that? Why would someone enjoy doing that, even from a young age, you see what I mean? Even from a very young age, before they've had time to be corrupted properly, you see what I mean? Then why would they have this habit, or have this... We call it an imprint, that's been there from before. And you can meet very young children, who are either very kind... Like, I see there's a child in New York who... I don't know, his son, Kiran, who just, you know, before he could even crawl, he would come up to you and give you his candy or something, you see what I mean? And so there's some kind of imprint in this person's mind. We believe it comes from the past, and that you can get in the habit of doing things. That's one more reason to speak kindly to others, because it will become a habit. When you start doing the good side of things, we call it like a snowball effect, like it gets bigger and bigger, like you get on an upward spiral, like that, and things start going better and better and better. So, in the beginning, and we'll talk about it today, there's a way to keep track of how you're doing, there's a way to track your own progress. In the beginning, it's very depressing, okay? In the ancient days of Tibet, a thousand years ago, there were these great lamas named Kadampas. They were the first Tibetan Buddhists. They were the converts in Tibet. Before that, Tibet had like a shaman religion, and everybody was a sheepherder and a yakherder, and they didn't even have an alphabet. They had to send a group of people to India to get an alphabet. And they brought back the alphabet to write down Buddhism. And then they started writing down things. And the first system they had was to keep a bag of pebbles, black and white pebbles, and they would carry it around, the sheepherders would carry it around. And every time they did one of the good things, they would take a white pebble out of the bag and put it in the left pocket. And then every time they did a good thing, a bad thing, they would take a black pebble out and put it in the right pocket. And then at the end of the day, they would empty out their pockets, and they would count. And when you first try to do all these things, you'll find that it's very distressing that there's many, many black pebbles and only a few white ones. You know, when you really confront the nature of your mind, it's a little bit disturbing, like you think I'm a bad person. Then you try to do it for a week, and it seems like the black ones are getting more. We say that this is a normal process of discovering who you really are, and not to be upset about it. You know, you've always been that way, and you're just noticing it for the first time. If you really keep score of how many good, how many bad, it's a little bit disturbing, even after a while. And then people come to me and say, I'm getting worse. And the lamas say, no, you're not getting worse, you're just noticing it for the first time. Okay, so we'll talk about that. The last one is your environment. We say that... And by the way, this is the most important question of morality. When you talk about morality, or being ethical, or doing the right thing, it all boils down to one thing. The really important thing is only one thing. Those imprints determine everything around you, okay? It's not just if you kill something, you'll be killed, or something like that. If you kill something, if you don't respect life, then the very place in which you live will be dangerous. You see what I mean? The streets will be dangerous, the cars will be dangerous, the other people will be dangerous, the parts of your house will be dangerous, the food you eat will be dangerous, like that. We say that... And this is the most important reason in Buddhism, to be a good person, or an ethical person. Those imprints that you put into your mind, into your subconscious, by doing good or bad to other people, determine every detail of your life, everything. Everything around you. Not just whether you meet a good person today or not. The floor was made from that. The roof was made from that. The traffic was made from that. The grass was made from that. The weather was made from that. What you hear on the radio was made from that. You see? Everything. Your own thoughts are made from that. So, whether you're depressed or happy, that's also an imprint coming back from your subconscious, after you planted it, by being a good person or a bad person. That's all. In Buddhism, it's just smart to be a good person. You see what I mean? It's what we call... The Dalai Lama calls it intelligent self-interest. You know? Like... It's just smart to be a good person. And then, everything around you is created by that. Mrs. Rebusch's question, don't forget it. I didn't want to say it last night, because I don't want everybody to think, you know... some crazy thing about Buddhism, but... It's not just whether the pen... It's not just whether you see the pen as good or bad. It's whether you see the pen at all. Okay? Can you be reborn as a dog, you know? And people say... You believe in rebirth, you know? So... Do you believe there's a big dog body factory, hidden between here and Dublin? You know, off to the side of the road somewhere, there's this big factory. And they're turning out dog bodies. And then, there's a big net up in the sky. And when people die, they catch their souls. And they bring them down. And they cut open the back. There's a zipper in the back of the dog body. And they put the souls in there, and they zip it back up. And then, that's how dogs are reborn. You see, I mean... I mean, I always used to think like that. Somebody said rebirth. You say... Oh, there's a dog there. And the mind comes and stays in the dog. Or something like that. The soul comes and stays in the dog. Don't think of it like that. Don't think of it like that. You put lousy imprints in your mind your whole life. You're unkind to other people. You say unkind things to other people. You don't respect life. You don't respect other people's things. You put all those kinds of imprints in your mind. You can call it the soul, it doesn't matter. Then the body dies. Soul is still there. Then what will the soul see? You see, I mean... What will the mind see? The mind looks down at the same cylinder. Oh, which one are we talking? Which cylinder you want to talk about? Let's talk about this cylinder first. The mind looks at this cylinder and sees something to chew on. It doesn't think of it as a pen anymore. Cannot think of it as a pen. Different imprints are coming up. Lousy imprints, okay? Bad imprints. And it sees something to chew on. And then it looks at this cylinder and sees what? We've been bad, okay? Bad imprints. Paw. Leg. Fur. You see, I mean... The difference between my hair and fur is not that big, okay? And... And it's just a slight shift in the mind. It's a very slight shift in the mind. To go from seeing this alive to seeing this dead. You see, I mean... There is no arm which is alive. There is no arm which is dead. My mind is making me see it one way or the other. Prove it. Same thing. Some people... Everybody in the room feels a little different about this pen. Why? There's something in your mind that's making you do that. And... And if you had a different imprint in your mind, you would see this arm as different, okay? The mind or the soul doesn't die when you die, when the body dies. You carry all the things you've done to other people in you. And they determine how you see everything. Everything. Okay? Even your own thoughts. You see what I mean? Everything. So it's not crazy to say you can go to heaven or hell after you die. It's not crazy to say you can see it as a dog. That's not crazy at all. There is no factory making dog bodies. There is no construction company that went down and dug way down there and made some bad place there called hell. It's all... It's all your perceptions, okay? It's very, very exciting, because you can meet angels. And it's very, very dangerous, because you can go to hell. And that's how hell's created. There is no separate hell or something like that, okay? There is no such thing. Yeah. No, there is no dog's body until you see it. [Говорящий 2] You see what I mean? Get used to it. Yeah. Yeah, good. [Говорящий 1] Yeah. [Говорящий 2] Ah, you tell me. [Говорящий 1] How many dogs... She wants to know if once you're stuck in a dog's state of mind, right? It's just a state of mind. Once you're stuck in a dog's perceptions, can you get back? How many dogs can consciously understand what I'm teaching today? Consciously undertake the ten things I'm describing to you. Consciously understand why they work. Work on their compassion for others. Think about others' benefit. Live their lives for the sake of others. How many dogs can understand that? Just about... Not many. Anyway... Not many. Not many. Okay, not many in a conscious way. You know, there are dogs that are nice dogs. There are dogs that save people's lives. But for a dog to sit there and say, you know, I've been bad my whole life, but the way you present those ten things, now, that's compelling. You know? Yeah, I've heard it my whole life in church, but now when you talk about it in terms of perceptions, and that it explains why the people in this room each feel differently about that pen, you'd sold me. I'm gonna be a good dog now. You know, we say it's just totally... it's very, very difficult to come up. You see what I mean? Very difficult. Okay, and don't think of it as dogs jumping into human bodies. It's not like that. It's not like Night of the Living Dead. You know, and there are bodies, and... and then minds are put in the bodies. It's not like that. You just start seeing things differently. Okay? You're seeing things a certain way right now. Where do you think that came from? Do you think it's just an accident, everything is here? You know? Do you think it's an accident that you're sick, and the person next to you is not sick? Do you think it's an ac... those things... Buddhism says no accidents. At all. You know, everything has a reason. You might call it science. You know what I mean? We're more scientific than scientists. Scientists get back to the beginning of things and say, oh, that one thing came from nothing. Big bang. Boom. First there's nothing, and then there's a big bang. You know? We don't say that. We say everything comes from something else. There's a reason why everything is happening to you. There's a reason why every detail of this room is here. And it all relates to how you treat other people. Very interesting. That's the connection between... ethics and... and... and your life, and what you're seeing. You see? Those ten commandments that they've been teaching you in church are absolutely true. You just have to understand why. And then you'll be more interested. Okay. Okay. So, these four kinds of results happen after any one of those ten. After you die, certain things... come up in your mind, and you see yourself a certain way. Okay? Big changes when you die. Okay? Do you have to die to have big changes? No. Before you die, you can have big changes. Like what? Like, look at this thing and see pure, beautiful, shining, white light. And a totally different kind of body. And we call you an angel or a Buddha, it doesn't matter. But... the principle is the same. And the idea of being a spiritual... person, is to achieve that before you die. You have a choice. You can either see this thing die, or you can see this thing turn into white light. Which do you prefer? You know? And if you keep these strictly, then those things happen. Okay? So, these... this result can happen before you die. Okay? That's the idea of going to heaven. We believe in heaven. We believe you can go there. We don't believe it's a separate place. No more than hell. You just start seeing things differently. Last question. Is it a matter of choice? Can you say, Oh, you're right. I choose to see my arm as an angel's arm, right now. Will it work? You gotta get used to that. We're talking about gardening. Gardening. You have to plant the seeds, you have to tend them well, and then you... it comes back up to the... to the conscious mind. It's not a matter of choice. You can't sit here and say, Oh, I believe everything's a perception. Now I'm going to see it as a hundred pound note, you know? You know, and then it doesn't work like that. Can you turn it into a hundred pound note? Yes. How? Give one pound. Give two pounds. Give it with knowledge. Give it knowing how these things work. And give it with some kind of love. And then you can see it as a hundred pound note. How long does it take? I don't know. My company does a hundred million a year. You know, I start at seven dollars an hour. It works, okay? Alright, number two. People around you speak kindly, means it changes the way that the people around you behave. Number three. You get on a roll. I don't know if you have that expression in Ireland. In America, you get on a roll. Like, it's easier to be good when you've been good yesterday. And then you get into a habit, you see? There's an imprint which makes it happen over and over again. And then finally, environment. Environment means everything around you is created by those imprints. Everything. Every detail of your face, every detail of this room has been created by those imprints, okay? Did you have a question? You should be concerned about the dog. You know, when I say, oh, you could all go to hell, you could all be a dog next life, people sit there like, you know. But if I present it this way, as an impression going into your mind, and then the imprint coming back out, and if I explain it very slowly with the pen, then I get into the dog thing, everybody's like... You know, because about half the people get it. About half the people say, they say in their mind, oh my god, that could happen to me. You see what I mean? It can happen to you, yeah. The reason you're seeing yourself this way has a cause, and the reason you could see yourself as another way has a cause. So, yeah, sorry. [Говорящий 2] The question was, if you were raised as a good dog... [Говорящий 1] She said if you were a good dog, would the seeds for seeing yourself as a dog run out? By the way, all seeds run out. All imprints run out. That's why people get old. That's why people die. That's why every relationship you've ever been in ended, or will end. And that's why you'll lose everything you ever worked to own. You know, the idea of ownership is funny. You're owning this thing as long as the imprint lasts. And every imprint is impermanent. Every imprint is temporary. All things get old. All things end. So what happens when you go to heaven? Is this going to end? Different thing. You see, once you understand the principle well, you can keep it running. You see? It's a skill. You just keep reinvesting. It's very interesting. I mean, a real Buddhist who understands all this stuff, someone gives you three pounds, you make sure you give away as much of it as you can. Next day, you got five pounds. And you make sure you give away as much as... You call it, like, reinvesting? You can... How do you say? Perpetuate these things. Once you understand the principle, you can keep it running indefinitely. And that's a paradise. And that's a heaven. And you can. And Buddhists don't come back. I mean, they don't... You don't lose it once you get there. You see what I mean? So, the answer about dogs is very... You know, I had a dog debate in New York, so I'm a little bit shy about it. But anyway... Somebody was telling me dogs are having a good time. And I said, maybe. You know, I had to agree in the end. I'm not sure. But the scriptures say they're not having a good time. The scriptures say they're incapable, generally, of an unselfish thought. You know, I mean, some dogs like their pups, they're kind to their pups, or they're kind to their owners, but in general, they can't understand the concept. They can't understand any concepts at all, actually, in general. You know, they can understand only, there's food there, and I get the food, unless someone hits me hard enough before I get the food, you know? I mean, that's all. They don't... They say human mind is the best one to work with, because you can... you can understand the concept of being selfless, and that's very unnatural in the animal world, of doing something selfless, for someone else. So the odds are very bad for them. Yeah, eventually it wears out. And then eventually, there's maybe one good imprint in queue, and they become... they see themselves as a... as a human, you know. Yeah, very difficult. The odds are very bad. Yeah? What is your prediction? That's why I was... yeah, yeah. Okay, two questions. Two separate questions. First about the dog. You know, I had a two-hour debate with a guy in New York, just before I left New York, about the dog. And, yeah, I totally admit that humans have a capacity for cruelty, especially to each other, which far exceeds any animal's capacity. Okay? We say this comes from a... a mental function, called lodra. Lodra means the ability to reason, or intellect. And intellect can be twisted in the bad way, in which case you convince people to be racist, or to be nationalistic, or to hurt other people. Or it can be bent into a good way, in which you teach people to be moral, or to be good to each other. And so, in the animal realm, there's never been examples of great saints, like Mother Teresa, or... You know what I mean? That capacity of human intellect can be twisted into something far worse than any animal is capable of. And on the other hand, it can be molded into something far better than any animal is capable of. And we're mostly hoping for the second... But I have to admit, yeah, about the... It can be twisted either way. And it has been. And you just have to... We are more capable of evil, and more capable of good than the animals. I'm talking about the good. Second part... You know, it's very difficult to prove to someone about a future life, and I didn't come to do that. Second, it's... difficult to prove to people that you can meet angels, you know, and that it's possible. So, all I can do is by logic. You see, all I can do is I'd say, do you agree that everyone in this room is seeing this pen differently? You say, yes. Do you agree that even different beings in this room see it as a pen or don't see it as a pen? You say, yes. Do you agree that that could apply to other things like this cylinder? Yes. I mean, logical. It's okay, I can accept it so far. Do you agree that whatever's making you see it as something good should have been good? We say, similarity of content. Jesus said, we did it in Dublin. We looked it up. Don't expect grapes from... thorns, and don't expect figs from thistles, or something like that. And the point he's saying is that this is essential for my argument. You know, if you're going to accept what I say today, this part is essential. Like content leads to like content. Good cannot create bad. Bad cannot create good. You cannot have an enjoyable experience of this pen unless there's an imprint in your mind that came from something good to another person. Good can only lead to good. Bad can only lead to bad. Like, Jesus... The reason he brought it up, the reason he's talking about grapes and thistles and thorns and... What was the other thing? Figs. He's trying to say it's the same thing. It's the same principle. You cannot have... We say, an essential part of this argument, and it's very difficult to accept, is that a good deed cannot lead to a bad result. Totally impossible. Yeah. Was Jesus' crucifixion a bad thing or a good thing? That's totally up to what? Who's perceiving it? Totally. I mean, I'm sure his enemies said, great, you know, proof that he's not a powerful being. Look, you can nail him up, he suffers like everybody else, you know. And his true disciples are saying, look at that, a person, a god, who's willing to act like a human and suffer like that to teach us something. You see what I mean? And who's right? Both. Is this good or bad? You see? Depends on who's looking. Is it even a pen or not? Depends on who's looking. Is the dog right or wrong? Who thinks it's not a pen? They're right. For a dog, they're right. You see, I mean, you gotta get used to that. I'll throw one thing in your head, okay? You're Irish, you can handle it. There is no pen outside of those two perceptions. How's that go? Okay? Now, get used to it, think about it. I don't mean to... Beyond what the dog sees, which is not a pen, and beyond what I see, which is a pen, there's nothing. There's nothing which is either way. You see what I mean? There's nothing which is really a pen. There's nothing which is really not a pen. There's the two viewpoints of a cylinder. And that's all there is. You can't say the dog is chewing on a pen. That's not respecting animal rights. He's chewing on what he perceives as something good to chew on. Okay? You can't say that the human's trying to write with something good to chew on. They're writing with a pen. Who's right? What did Jesus do? Was Jesus an abject failure? Or was Jesus a brilliant strategist who, by allowing them to do it, you know, created something to last for 2,000 years? You know? Which one? You see what I mean? Depends on who's looking. I'd rather have him be the angel, you know? It becomes a question of what would you rather have, you know? Would you rather see your body as an angel's body, or would you rather see it as a human body getting old? Because you can have either one, and either one is real. You see? Because you're perceiving it that way. People say, oh, that means everything's illusory. Everything's what you think it is. I say, go stand in front of an illusory taxi on the street. Let it hit your illusory legs. When you get to the illusory hospital, send us an illusory postcard. You know? It's not like that. It is your perceptions, and that's why it's real. Okay? Very interesting. It's not what you thought it was, and that's why it is what it is. It's very powerful. Yeah? [Говорящий 2] You said no good can ever come out of the bad. I mean, if somebody, like Kasima, there's a lot of people doing very good deeds because of it, so it brings out, sometimes badness brings out good in other people, and that part of it is good. [Говорящий 1] I'll do it. She said, I knew this would come up. I'll do it. Those of you who were in Melbourne, not Melbourne, Dublin, whatever it is. Okay. This is the $100 in the diamond deal thing. Okay? And I'll give you one example. You can use it a thousand times for other things, but you have to hear it at least once. Let's say you can have tea after that, okay? I'm speaking from real life. I was in the diamond business for 16 years, 17 years, okay? My boss would send me out to this special little room. There's a double man trap, which means double security doors, bulletproof glass, four things the guy has to get through. They come in with these... People keep thousands of diamonds in these little tiny papers. It's like a piece of paper. It's like wax paper. And they keep them in their front pockets, you know? Like $200,000 worth of diamonds. They just walk over to your room with it, because they don't want it to look like anything. They don't carry a big statue, or there's no security guard. They just put it in their pocket and they walk down the street. And then they get to your room, they go through four security checks, they come into this special little room, you sit down. It's called the buying room. There's nothing there except a scale, and a light, and a pad of paper. And you sit across from the guy, and in the diamond business there's no contracts, there's no written agreements, nothing. Everything is totally verbal. It's all your honor. It's a very beautiful business. I mean in the wholesale, you know, when you're dealing with thousands of stones. So this guy walks over, there's nobody there, no witnesses, nothing. And my boss will say, what has he got today? And you say, he's got about $200,000 worth of stones. What's the price per carat? He's asking $110 a carat. Something like that. Which will eventually sell for $1,000 a carat. Which is interesting, but anyway. So it's like $110 a carat. And I say, he's asking $110 a carat. The boss says, well is it worth $110 a carat? You say, yeah it is. Will we make a lot of money off it? We will. So offer him $100. And tell him it's not worth $110. And tell him nobody has sold it for $110. You see, tell a bunch of lies about it. This is after five people have sold it to $110 and I've bought it for $110. So now the boss has enough stones, so he's like seeing if he can squeeze it a little bit. So he says, tell the guy it's worth $100. I say, that's a lie. He says, it's okay. Go tell him, maybe he'll go for it. If he doesn't go for it, give him $110. So I lie. So $10 a carat on a $3,000, $3,000 carat parcel. You know, you've made, I don't know, more money. Let's say you've made $100 extra. Let's just say it's $100 or $100,000. It doesn't matter. And this is what triggered it. Let's say he agrees. Agreed, for sure. No, I told a lie and he gave it. This is, by the way, if you understand this one thing, I can go back to New York. It doesn't matter. Really, this one thing. So I have lied. That's a bad deed. But we just got $100 profit. So there's this flow. Looks like that. In the present time, this is like present time, okay? It looks like the lie has triggered the $100. Herein lies the suffering of all mankind. This perception. Herein lies all the evil and all the suffering that has ever been done to people through each other. It's this perception right here. We call this the big lie. This perception is a lie. That the lie can create $100. This is a bad thing, this is a good thing. This is a fig growing from a... thorn, I don't remember which. And then this is a... what was the other one, rose? Oh, grapes growing from... This is impossible. According to Jesus and everybody else, this cannot be happening. But it seems to be happening, okay? So according to Buddhism, according to the idea of imprints, what's really happening? Over here in the past is a thing called giving. You were generous to somebody. You gave to somebody. You saw the scone getting smaller and smaller and smaller, okay? He saw the scone getting bigger and bigger and bigger. You know, you saw your hand go out. You saw yourself give the scone to somebody. And now this $100 is coming to you. Wait a minute. $100 is a lot bigger than a scone. While they are in the subconscious, the imprints incubating, they get bigger. Like everything when they incubate, okay? All seeds, mental or physical, get bigger. I believe that about trees. I don't believe that about the mind. Hey, look at the United States of America federal budget. What's a trillion dollars? You're talking about a thousand billion dollars, okay? Where did it start? Benjamin Franklin is sitting in Philadelphia having a tea with somebody and says, what if we have a democracy? What if we have like a bureaucracy? That trillion dollars has started from one idea in a man's mind. You see what I mean? And here's this thing blowing up people all over the world, you know? Come from one little thought in one person's mind, like Arizona or something like that, okay? All right. It's just one giving grows into $100. We say you got the $100 because you were generous in the past. And we say that's the only place that money can come from. Only place. Every penny that was ever gained in the business world throughout history was gained through giving in the past, period. What does the lie make? What kind? No, lies are very interesting. You want to know the main result of a lie? Nobody believes you. Even when you're telling the truth. Like, you go out and you say, I'm telling you the absolute truth, your diamonds are worth $100. He says, I don't believe you. And it's true, you know what I mean? You say something true. If you ever wanted to know, if you ever got frustrated that people don't believe you when you're finally telling the truth, it's because you lied in the past. So, what you have here is, this is a result, and this is a cause. But is this the cause of this result? No. We say, impossible. Jesus was right. Everybody else who ever was religious was right. Cannot get grapes from thistles? Thorns. Okay. You can't get good things from bad things. The content of this is negative. The content of this is positive. This cannot cause that. Impossible. Out of the question. Okay. Are you telling me that if I had chosen not to lie that day, I still would have made $100? Abhidharmakosha says, yes. You can count on it. Okay. Suddenly there's a stock split in your stocks. You know, they send you a check for it. This happens to people who practice this knowingly. See, there's a big difference if you do it knowingly. They get all these checks all the time. It's unbelievable. It's unbelievable. I have this lama, he says, you need to make a thousand dollar offering. This really happened to me, recently. And I'm like, I don't have any money, lama. Use your credit card. I'm like, that's the last thousand dollars I have on my credit card. I'll be broke after that. Just do it. And I'm like nervous, you know. I'm like, okay. Alright, just this once, you know. And I do it. And I make some offerings, a thousand dollars. This is a real story. And then, like, I don't know, how many days later was it? A day later, or two days later? This letter comes in the mail. Uncle Seward, who you never met, and you didn't know existed, has died with no children. And we're sending you a ten thousand dollar check. Please sign here, you know. And... It works like that, I'm not kidding. This thing is not crazy, okay? Just try it. It's what Jesus wanted you to do, really. You know what I mean? And the principle is that, while this thing stays in your subconscious, it gets bigger, it gets bigger. Will it work in two days? Not necessarily. Will it work? We say it cannot not work. It must work. It always works. We say that this method of getting prosperous is infallible. They call it miluwa. Miluwa means can't fail. No energy is ever lost. Moral energy is, what do you call it? A perfect ecology. Moral energy is never lost. Anytime you do something good, you must, and you always will get an incredibly good result. Period. Anytime you do something bad, you always get a lousy result. Yeah. Yeah, it's fine. She said, her understanding is that, she said about the incubation period, Anila said that, as I understand it, as I've understood scripture or teachings, they don't often talk about the results happening in this life, and that the incubation period might be longer. There's Abhidharmakosha, there's a holy book called Abhidharmakosha, the fourth chapter, it explains the ripening period, or the incubation period. And there's three choices. It's called the tong gyur kyi le, kye nyen yong gyur kyi le, and shen lan yong gyur kyi le. And it means, things which you see in this lifetime, things which you see just after, and things which you see after that. You see what I mean? Depending on certain factors, you can speed up the incubation period. Okay? And they are called, shi sampa jorwa tar tuk. That means, shi means especially powerful person that you do it for. So like, if... We talked about Christina Noble last night. So like, if she came into this room and she had to make a plane, and 5,000 kids are depending on it, and you rushed her to the airport and you got her on the plane, that would be much more powerful imprint than helping just anybody else get on a plane. It's good to help everybody get on planes. And you should help everybody get on planes. But if she gets there on time, it's going to help a lot more people. So, when you do something like that, we call the shi or the object that you're dealing with, the person you're dealing with is so... spiritually... or, you know, the person like a doctor or something like that, someone's going to help so many other people that it's much more powerful than the imprint could come back in this lifetime. Okay? Hang on. One sec. We'll go back. Sampa means... intention. Okay? Intention. Meaning, if you have a very, very strong intention in your mind that I'm going to give this money, because I'm aware of people who are very, very, very... they're in very great suffering, and I know who they are, I know where they are, I know how much money I need, and I'm going to give this money, and when I get the money back, I'm going to use it for that. Then that intention is so powerful that it makes the incubation come faster. The fastest way to speed up the incubation and make it happen in this life is to understand what I've been talking about. You see, if you give money and don't understand what I'm talking about, if you just give money because your parents said so, your church said so, you're inclined to give money, you have lots of extra money, then not much result, and not much imprint. If you give it because you understand how it works, quite coldly, quite calculatingly, I'm going to give this money because I know in a certain amount of time it's going to come back to me because I understand how the imprint works, I understand how it stays in there, I understand how to speed it up, I'm going to manipulate these factors like a good businessman. It works faster. The incubation speeds up. Of course it has to be ideally intended for the good of others. But not exclusively. We count you with... Your happiness is included in the happiness of mankind. The idea that you have to work for mankind and exclude your happiness is a fallacy. You is one of mankind, even if you're a woman. You're one of the people in the world you're trying to make happy. No problem, make yourself happy too. We don't say you have to whip yourself and give all the money to other people. Use a reasonable amount for your simple, clear, happy lifestyle, and then give the rest. One more thing makes it faster. Tartuk means to own the action afterwards, to rejoice in it. Say, I'm glad I did that. I'd be happy to do that again. I'd do that any day at all. You see what I mean? Those make bad imprints worse and they make good imprints better. Like if you murder somebody and the judge says... You know how it happens in the court. The kid in New York comes in in chains. He's a 16-year-old kid who's just shot three people. And the judge says, Are you sorry? And he says, No. He's the guy who gets the life term all the time. It's just like that. The imprints work the same way. If you have no regrets at all, the imprint is much more powerful. So those four things make it much more powerful. And the idea of the secret teachings is to accelerate it within one lifetime. All that's based on Abhidharma, which is accepted by all Buddhist schools. Meaning, if those four factors are strong enough, object, intention... And then there's a thing called style. Style means... Do you do it with great style or not? How do you do the thing? Like when you shoot the guy, do you torture him for half an hour first? You see what I mean? Or before you give the money to... As you give the money to somebody, do you give it very respectfully and in a very kindly manner? Or do you just write a check and say, OK, here, get out of my life. You see what I mean? So there's object, there's... Well, sample boils into three, OK? The thought. So there's like object, there's intention, there's the emotion that you have, there's the style in which you do it, and there's whether or not you own the thing at the end. And all of these things play a factor. If they're all pretty strong, it changes from what we call lay to a lekhi lam, which means a nice, fat, big, perfect imprint. And then there's a good chance it'll come back quickly. [Говорящий 2] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [Говорящий 1] If it's done... By the way, the most important thing is knowledge. That's why they call it... There's a difference between what we say giving and the perfection of giving. You see what I mean? What makes giving perfect or not is what we call prajnaparamita, wisdom, knowledge. Do you understand what you're doing while you're doing it? And if you do it with cold... cold intellect, you know, I'm giving this, I know this is creating an imprint in my mind, I know it's going to come back to me this certain way when it comes up to the conscious mind, I know everything how it works, I am consciously going to be a perfect saint. You know? Because I know it's the best way to make things happen. And it works. It really does work. It's crazy. It's fun. I mean, just try it. Just try it. It's amazing. It's totally amazing. People come up to me and say it didn't work. I'll give you the common failure points, okay? A. You're not really doing it. You think you're doing it. I swear, I've been generous for six months now, I don't see any change in my financial situation, you know? Oh, what kind of generous was that? Well, about three weeks ago, I gave a guy a pound, you know? And I haven't seen a thing come back to me. And how many times have you been ungenerous during that time? You know, every half hour or so. I mean, you have to really be doing it. Secondly, there's a thing of you have to be aware of what's going on. You have to actually be aware that this is... You have to be mindful of why you're doing it, how you're doing it, things like that. And all of these four things. In other words, most of the complaints I have from people who say it doesn't work is that they're just not doing it. And upon five minutes of questioning, they and I both admit they're not doing it. You see what I mean? You have to be persistent, and you have to do it intelligently. You have to do it with strong knowledge. [Говорящий 2] In the context of style, it's different. [Говорящий 1] She said about style, are good deeds done in secret important? They say much better if done without an expectation of any recognition. [Говорящий 2] Of people knowing, not doing it in show, kind of. [Говорящий 1] Yeah, much more powerful. That's part of the style. Just do it quietly. And by the way, the better people get, the more they do it secretly, so you've got to be careful about judging other people. As I say, I saw Christina Noble come into the room and they said, this is the great Christina Noble. This is a week ago, right? It's just this chubby lady from Ireland. So what does she do? I mean, very dangerous to judge people from the... You never know who's doing it in secret. Did you have a question? Yeah, no, if a guy comes with a diamond parcel, and it's worth $100, and he just doesn't understand that, and he offers it to you for $80, there's two kinds of mistakes in the diamond business. Seriously. Sometimes the salesman picks up the wrong parcel and comes over. And you say, how much is this? You're unwrapping it, you see? And you always look in the guy's face, and you look at him hard, and you say, how much is this worth? And they'll say $100. And then you look at the... You're opening the stones, and then you open it up, and it's obviously a $200 parcel. And you're trying to hold the corners of your mouth. And you kind of wrap it back up, and you don't want to show him in particular, and he's obviously made a mistake. I mean, in that case in the diamond business, we always tell the guy. We call the owner, and we say, look, you've sent the wrong parcel. And we always do that. Because that's just a clear mistake. Now, if the guy's just a lousy businessman, you know, if he just comes and says, this is worth $80, and you open it up, it's obviously $100. You know, if he's just a stupid businessman, there's no... There's not a bad karma, okay? You don't make a bad imprint from that. It's just business. I mean, that's... But you don't have to try to convince him to charge you $20 more. Okay? No, that's his right to be a bad businessman. Yeah, there's no particular... There's no... He won't be in business that long, and it's all right. By the way, to think that the 20 pound note came from nothing is... That's... That's... That breaks the rules. See what I mean? To believe that it's just a mistake. Now, does it have to be a result of doing the cups? No, it doesn't have to be a result. Could it be partially a result of doing the cups? Maybe it used to be a 10 pound note this morning. Earlier this morning. Now, if you giggle, you don't get it. You see? I'm dead serious. I'm dead serious. It's amazing. Start thinking like this. Start thinking like this. You're not naive. You're not stupid. You're not like some spiritual... hocus-pocus. It's for real. There is no reality to that note. Get used to it. This is not a pen. This is not something to chew on. It depends on what imprint you put in your mind. There is... The note didn't have a number on it this morning. Get used to it. Otherwise, you won't be able to use it properly. You see? If you have some hesitation like that, or doubt like that... And all you have to do is remember the pen. I was in Mongolia. There were 1,000 people sitting there. They got it in like 5 minutes. I think it's in their blood. You see? And in 5 minutes they understood it. If you ever doubt what I'm saying, think of this pen. There are 50 people in here. Each person is having a different perception of this pen. Where do you think that's coming from? Do you think it's some kind of mistake, or accident, or random, or... What do you think? It has to come from some place. You see what I mean? It's not crazy. Okay? Last question. Last, last question. [Говорящий 2] Tea time. [Говорящий 1] Okay. [Говорящий 2] The plane crashed? [Говорящий 1] Good question. It's a great question. [Говорящий 2] Now... [Говорящий 1] Yeah. This is a discussion. This comes up in the holy books about what is the perfection of a generosity? What is the perfection of a deed? What makes a deed perfect? And we say, it's perfect when you do it with knowledge, and when you do it for others. Those two things make a deed perfect. It's one thing to give money because the church told you, or your parents told you, or your school told you, or the bible told you, and you don't understand why. You're just doing it. And that's very weak. It doesn't last. People like that don't see angels. You see what I mean? But to do it with knowledge, and to do it... You take her to the airport knowing that she's an important person, and that there's going to be a huge imprint created, and you're going to use that to help other people. That's a warrior's state of mind. I understand how it works, and when it comes back to me, I'm going to use it to help other people. And you put her on the plane. You have perfected giving. It's perfect giving. The plane goes up and crashes and she dies. It has nothing to do with your action. You know? It's still perfect giving. Are there still poor people in the world? Yes. Are there people in the world who have perfected giving? 2,000 years ago. Of course there are. So are they failures? You see? You've got to distinguish between... You see, it's perfect if you do it understanding how it works, and if you do it... to help others. You know, some long-term goal to become a warrior, a saint, you know, to help other people. But whether the plane crashes or not is totally up to... her imprints. Okay? Her imprints. Exactly. The 49 people on the plane who died with her, that 50 people together in the past did something that did not respect life. They threatened life or they hurt life or something like that. We believe that the imprints can all come out... We are all having at this moment a common imprint. When I hold up this thing, everybody in this room has an imprint to see a cylinder. Everybody except the dog has an imprint to see the pen. Half the people have an imprint to see something good. Half the people have an imprint to see something that they wish would go down so they could have their scones. You see what I mean? And like that. Everything is running on imprints. Everything. But... and we can have them in common. You see what I mean? Yeah. Last, last, last question. Yeah, exactly. The people on the next plane that doesn't crash have a common imprint to enjoy a nice flight together. Although, probably not to have good food. Okay? Seriously. Not kidding. Not kidding. All common experience. The country of Ireland is created by a common imprint in the minds of that many million people. It's very interesting. Borders between countries are created by this. You know, why is there an invisible line in the southern United States and the people on the north side have too much to eat and are exercising to get it off and the people four feet on the other side don't have enough to eat? Who's creating that line? [Говорящий 2] You see what I mean? Yeah. [Говорящий 1] Can you cure imprints? We call... Yeah, it's a great question. We're gonna cover that. We have to cover that. Yeah. Can you get rid of old imprints? You have to. I always travel with... I always travel with a big llama. I always come. And then one day I read about this terrorist bomb under the sea and it blew out that one seat. You know? Do you remember that? It blew out one person in one seat. You know, I'm thinking it doesn't help if you have that imprint. It doesn't help to travel with a big llama. You sure? Okay, go ahead. Oh, it's a great question. You know, there is one bad imprint in your mind when you see a great holy person like Christina Noble fall down in a plane. Your imprint in your mind to have Christina Noble alive in your world has just worn out. You see? As all imprints wore out. And that's your bad. That's something bad that you did. The fact that she won't be in your world for the rest of your life is one of your good imprints has worn out. You see what I mean? The fact that somebody like the Dalai Lama is getting older is not the Dalai Lama getting older. My imprints to have this person walking on the same planet as me is getting older. You see? It's very interesting. Yeah. Yeah, that's true. Okay, take a break. If you have anything personal to talk about, come up. Okay? And we'll start in about 10-15 minutes. Okay, we'll start again. We're gonna zoom through those 10 that we still didn't finish, okay? So, number 7 is when you say something, it has meaning. So, you don't waste words, don't waste time. In America, this is really difficult. We're brought up to be talkative, and we're brought up to joke around a lot, and... Joke is not so bad, but I mean like gossiping, or... You know, there's an ancient text, it's about 2,500 years old, and it says there's three main things that people talk about which is meaningless. Politics, crimes, and sex. Okay? And, I guess it hasn't changed any, you know, in 2,500 years. Like, to sit there and talk about... It's important to know what's happening in Yugoslavia. It's important to have a clear understanding what the issues are, and how you can help. But beyond that, you see, to be entranced when you see bodies being brought off the trucks, and to stare at the girl who's had her arm cut, you know, or... You know, just because it's exciting or something like that, is like meaningless. You see what I mean? Like, a lot of what you read in the newspapers, a lot of what you read in a magazine, a lot of what you see on the television, once you get the basic information, do you really need the rest of that? You see what I mean? Do you really need to load your mind up? Your mental real estate is limited, it's like a computer, you have so many megabytes of memory that you can remember. Do you really want to know, you know, the private lives of the undersecretary of the undersecretary, and what he did on Thursday? You know what I mean? It's important to know this politician is honest or not, dependable or not, will you vote for them or not. But beyond that, you know, like, the details of someone's, you know, what kind of car do they use, or... most of what you read, you don't remember after three days. So why bother? You see what I mean? If it doesn't have a... it doesn't have an impact on your life, and you can't use that information for something meaningful, then why talk about it? Or why... why spend your precious lifetime, the limited days that you have? Your life is also numbered, you know? The days that you're alive have a number. Do you really want to sit there in front of a television for three hours? And... is that what you want in your precious mind for that time? I'm not saying TV is evil, I'm not saying that a good novel is evil. I read good novels all the time. I keep them in the bathroom. That's how much of my time they deserve. You know? If it's a long... number two? I'll spend five minutes on that novel. You know what I mean? That's about what they're worth to me. And I actually do. My students know, they bring me novels, they say, this is for next month. [Говорящий 2] You know? [Говорящий 1] And... and it helps me calm my mind down. And entertainment has value. We believe in Buddhism that you should know how to relax, you should know how to go on a vacation, you should know how to stop working, you should know how to, you know, go out and see a film and relax properly. And then come back and do your good things. You see what I mean? That's part of being a good person, is to relax properly. But to sit there hour after hour in front of something which is chattering and you're not really listening and you're not really interested, and you're just kind of entranced by it, is a waste of your precious life. Your life is too precious for that. So that would be meaningless, avoiding that. So every time you say something, you should have meaning, ideally. Okay? Now, if you're in an office with ten other people who never heard this thing, and it would make them uncomfortable if you didn't chatter with them, what do you think? You should chatter. Okay? I mean, in a limited way. Carefully. Controlled way. Okay? If it would make everyone else comfortable, and it would make everybody very uncomfortable if you don't join in and talk about the latest films, or... you know, then say a little bit and try to get out of the room as soon as you can. Okay? Number eight. I should start this on a new page. He said, if someone's talking... By the way, I always repeat it for the video. Okay? He said, what if they're talking about Kosovo, and you're taking part in the conversation. Someone starts talking about it. It depends on your intentions, mostly. Like, is this conversation going to lead to some concrete action? You see what I mean? Are you and these other people going to actually go out and collect some food and make sure it gets over there? Or, you know, are you trying to figure out is this a good thing to do, or is this a bad thing to do? How should I feel about it? Should I support it, or shouldn't I support it? That's important. You should do that. But if it's just, did you see that guy's bloody arm? It was so amazing, you know, and he had these burns, and you couldn't believe it, you know. And if it's like, you don't really have any intention to use that information. If it's just talk, then you've just spent... There's a joke in Tibet, I spent my first 20 years too young to know anything to do. I spent the next 20 years having a good time. I spent the next 20 years wondering what I did, and then I was dead, you know, something like that, you know what I mean? You don't have much time. The adult, clear, thinking, non-working, non-sleeping, non-eating, you know, non-defecating time. You don't have much. What do you have, an hour a day? A precious lifetime. You're paying your employer 8 hours a day, so that you can have 2 hours a day. In America, you're paying your employer 50 weeks of your life, so you can have 2 weeks of your life. You know, so you're going to spend that hour talking, you see what I mean, about something that doesn't, you're not going to do anything about it. You see what I mean? The time that you have in your life for what we're doing right now is almost nothing. You know, in a whole 24-hour day, you maybe have 2 hours to do what you really want to do. And the rest is all things you have to do to get the 2 hours, you see what I mean? So don't waste it. Don't spend it meaninglessly. Oh yeah, I Don't Talk has those 4 effects we talked about. What's the first one? If it's really dumb, it could make you see a different thing after you die. Bad thing, okay? Secondly, you'll be in a place where people are just, everything is frivolous, nothing has meaning. You know, United States of America, 90% of our culture, you know, it's just frivolous, it's just wasting time, it's just things that are not meaningful. Third result, you'll be in the habit of doing that more, and you'll enjoy it, and it'll cause you more problems. Fourth result is very interesting, what is I Don't Talk? Little one, where are you? What's the imprint? Environmental. What is it? Oh, things, timing is wrong. That's one I remember. What do you remember? Timing is wrong all the time. Like, things don't happen on time. Huh? Huh? Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, that's it, no leisure. Like, you go to some... I used to travel a lot in the stone business, because every country has their own stones. Like, I went a lot to Brazil, Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, and every country has its own cities, and every city has its own feeling, and some cities don't have any kind of leisure, like no parks, no benches, no place you can sit, no place to take your rest properly. Like some parts of New York, you can't find a place to go to the bathroom, you could walk for 20, 30 blocks, there's no place you're allowed to go to the bathroom. And... and that's a result of idle talk. Environmentally, those perceptions of a place like that are created by wasting your time. Okay? Something like that. I'll give you a big list of them. You know, we call them the correlations. Some of them are obvious, you know, some of them are not so obvious. So it's good to have a list. Okay. Happy when other people get things. The human nature is, when someone else gets something, like a better car than yours, or a better job than yours, or more success than you have, or more fame than you have, you don't like it. That's the natural human thing. And this is when you see people get something, you should be happy. You should be happy for them. Guess what the result of that is? You see what I mean? Then you have all these imprints for enjoying things, for satisfaction. There's one thing about being wealthy or prosperous, is created by a certain kind of imprint. But the ability to enjoy your wealth is a different imprint, you see what I mean? In the diamond business, I met many, many, many extremely wealthy people. 50 million dollars a year, 500 million dollars a year. And some of them are quite contented, with lots of money. And some of them are totally discontented, no matter how much money they get, you see. You can't say that money creates discontent, it's not true. There are some wealthy people who are quite contented. And there are some wealthy people who are discontented. And there are some poor people who are contented, and some poor people who are discontented. There's different imprints. There's one imprint that makes you poor or wealthy. There's a different imprint that allows you to enjoy the wealth, or whatever you have. You see what I mean? And if you have that imprint, it doesn't much matter how much you have. And that comes from enjoying other people's prosperity. I'm glad they got a good job. You're not like always comparing yourself to others. That's like one of the greatest evils in the world, is saying, you know, they have a little more than me, or they get more attention than me, or something like that. Not to be able to enjoy, to be envious of other people, things, okay? Number nine, happy when others succeed. You know, the ancient books of Tibet say that there are 84,000 negative thoughts and deeds. 84,000, okay? And they say you can abbreviate those into ten. And these are the ten. And the point is, if this is in the top ten, it must be something we do all the time. It must be something we do many times every day. Meaning, you see someone have a problem, and you're fascinated by it. You see what I mean? O.J. Simpson case in the United States. I was traveling around the world at that time. It was following me. I couldn't escape it, you know? Every newspaper in the world, Spanish, French, German, Thai, Chinese, is reporting about this... this guy's failure, you know? And people are obsessed with it, you know? There's this natural human thing to be obsessed with other people's problems. And not to feel so bad. You see what I mean? Like, you see someone having a serious problem. Even on the street, you see somebody break down, and you're like, all the cars are slowing down. Are they slowing down to help the guy? No, they're slowing down because you want to see. How bad did he get hurt? You know what I mean? We call it rubbernecking in the United States. And the whole traffic slows down, but nobody stops. I mean, a few people stop to help. Most people are just curious, you know? And there's this sort of fascination with other people's problems. I've even been in large companies where one of the employees would make a $100,000 mistake, and everybody would be walking around going... You know? You know? Even the owner, you know? And then you sit down for five minutes and think, this is going to be $100,000 out of whose pocket? Do you think the owner is going to cut his profits? You know? It's going to come out of your Christmas bonus. You know what I mean? And still you're walking around, you know, he's going to take $20 out of everybody's Christmas bonus to make it back. And still you're walking around looking at this guy going... You know? That's like some kind of human trait. Okay? It's in the top ten. You must be doing it all the time. The opposite is to be happy when you see somebody else succeed at something. Be happy about it. Happy when other people get things. Little one, she's the expert. Opposite of craving. Disenjoyment, the ability to enjoy your possessions. Satisfaction. Satisfaction with whatever you have. You see, there's this sort of... I went through this thing in business. I started out at $7 an hour, then I went to $9 an hour, then I went to $12 an hour, then I went to $20 an hour, then I went to $50,000 a year, then I went to $100,000 a year, then I went to $150,000 a year. And it's funny, because in the beginning I was more satisfied. And towards the end I was always like... getting angry, because the percentage wasn't high enough this year. You know what I mean? And I was losing the imprint for this, you see? I wasn't taking enough joy in other people's successes, in other people's... And also it leads to a lot of... Actually we've made a... we're writing a book about it for business people, and it's been contracted by this big company, Doubleday, and there's 43 of them, okay? But... people work for you better, they don't let you down at work, like if you're a manager and you give an assignment to three employees, they do it. You can count on them, you see what I mean? You give out work and your employees are working smoothly together, you see what I mean? And there are like 43 different ones, I can show you maybe a list of like that. But basically, the people around you are getting along better with each other, they're supporting each other, the tasks you give them get finished, and these are all important in business. Like it's not just giving away money to get money back or something, you have to enjoy the successes of your employees, like you have to... when you meet one of your employees and they're doing something right, you have to say, oh, you're doing a good job and I appreciate it, and it's like appreciation creates satisfaction. How's that? If you have it, you can get wealthy and enjoy the wealth. If you don't have it, you can get wealthy and still be miserable. And, you know, I've met people like that. If someone's trying hard to succeed and they're not succeeding, you feel some kind of empathy for them. You say, yeah, I understand what that's like, you know what I mean? And then that empathy creates some kind of imprint, a very good imprint for succeeding yourself. Last one. The last really good imprint you can do is to respect these ideas themselves. You see what I mean? Somebody talks to you, and I'm not saying you have to be a Buddhist, I don't mean that at all. I don't mean that at all. I did all this in business, nobody knew I was a monk. For five, six years, I didn't tell anybody. I just went to work and I used the principles, and taught them to the people in my division. And they were from 18 different countries, and they spoke 18 different languages, and they had more than 18 religions among them. You know what I mean? It doesn't matter, you see? These ideas are like the law of gravity. If this pan is smaller than this planet, what will happen if I let go? You know? It's not a matter of opinion. You see what I mean? These are laws of nature. You see what I mean? These just work. No matter what— it doesn't matter what religion you are in, it doesn't—I don't— it doesn't care. It doesn't matter what— it doesn't matter at all. If you follow them, you put certain imprints in your mind, and you get certain results back. And... what's the opposite of this? The opposite of this is to say— I'll tell you a few of the... disrespecting these ideas. For example, if you understand how these imprints are put in your mind— by the way, how are they put in your mind? Just your own awareness of what you're doing. You see what I mean? When you give the scone, and the hand's getting smaller, and then the other hand's getting bigger, and the scone gets smaller again, and your awareness of that plants the imprint in your mind. Okay? Your mind is like a tape recorder. Your mind is like a VCR. It doesn't need anything else. Nothing else is necessary. You just have to be aware of it, and... and that good deed or bad deed is recorded. Okay? We don't believe there's a person keeping a journal somewhere. We don't believe... something like that. We believe it's all kept here. It's all recorded here. So, question. Should you... If you're going to do something bad, should you close the door? It doesn't make any difference. That would be disrespecting these ideas. You see what I mean? There's no point to it, you know? The recorder is here. See, if you steal money unknown to other people, or you steal money in front of people, it doesn't really matter, because the imprint is made by... your own mind. You see, it doesn't matter whether you hide the action or not. If you're going to be bad, you might as well just blatantly be bad. Okay? Because the recording is on all the time anyway. Okay? And that's... that's one of the ideas. Or to say... Nothing matters, you know? There's no connection between what I do and what comes back to me. I can be as... as impolite and as... as thoughtless to other people as I want to be. Because there is no effect from that. I can get away with it because I'm in a position of power, something like that. So, if I'm in a position where I can do that to other people, I don't have to be concerned, because it's not going to come back. They can't do anything about it. I'm the president. You know what I mean? It doesn't matter. I'm in a position... If they don't like it, I can fire them. You see what I mean? Or something like that. That's disrespecting these... these rules. The imprints are made either way. You see what I mean? To think like that is number ten. Now, why is number ten the worst of the ten? With respect to the others. Yeah, if you have number ten, you do the other nine happily. You see? If you don't get what I've been talking about in terms of imprints, and in terms of them creating your life and your reality, then you'll happily do the other nine. Who cares? You know, if you can get away with it, if you're more powerful than the other person, or no one's watching, then just do it. There's no effect. Okay? That would be disrespecting these ideas. You see? Like that. Okay. What time do you have, Angela? Oh, I think we better stop there. Yeah, one question. I'm sorry, say again? Oh, all 84,000? Can I mention some more, you mean? I don't... Oh, I shouldn't say abbreviated meaning like 1,000 going to this one and 1,000... It's not like that. These are the top ten. Like, these are the ten most frequent. By far. You see what I mean? So, that's all. They're about, like for me, if you're a fully ordained monk, there are about 484 that you have to watch out for all the time. Okay? 253 of which relate to my monkhood. If you're a fully ordained nun, it's 364. Something like that. Okay. And there are special ones that you have to watch out for. Each kind of person. I have really bad news for you. We didn't cover the homework. So, you just have to have a nice lunch. And... Yeah. I'm sorry I shouldn't mention it. It was this guy who kidnapped me this morning. Also... Thank you for coming and chatting with me. Okay, please go have a nice lunch.
