[Speaker 2]
The big gun is to poof the husband, okay? The little pistol, first little pistol, yeah, delay for a few seconds, okay?

[Speaker 1]
Second little pistol, don't go in the kitchen. Third little pistol, overstimulation.

[Speaker 2]
What was that? Overstimulation. Oh, yeah.

For example, you're tired. Or you ate sugar just before you went in the kitchen.

[Speaker 1]
Things like that. Fourth pistol?

[Speaker 2]
Yeah, you expose your mind to negative ...

[Speaker 1]
to TV, okay?

[Speaker 2]
You watch a lot of violent movies, then you're going to be violent sometimes, okay?

[Speaker 1]
Okay, fifth small gun, is to try not to make habit, okay? Try not to make bad habits, okay?

[Speaker 2]
Here we go. RGYUD SNGA BA GOMS PA NI The fifth small cause of your negative emotions, is say GOMS PA. GOMS PA That means you made a habit of getting angry, okay?

And the Tibetan word for meditation comes from this word, okay? The Tibetan word is GOMS PA, okay? So, it's a little bit different sound.

[Speaker 1]
GOMS PA, GOMS PA That means make a bad habit. Then GOMS PA means to meditate. So, the Tibetan word for meditation means to make a good habit, in your mind, okay?

I like the Sanskrit word.

[Speaker 2]
It's Pavana. Say Pavana. Pavana.

The word for meditation is Pavana.

[Speaker 1]
Pavana. BAB means to become. ANG NA means ER, doer.

So, in Sanskrit, the word for meditation is that it changes you to a different person.

[Speaker 2]
Pavana. It makes you a better person, okay? So, in ancient India, your teacher won't say, please go and meditate for an hour.

They'll say, please go and become a better person for an hour.

[Speaker 1]
Okay.

[Speaker 2]
By the way, I'm curious, how many people felt the meditation was better after yoga?

[Speaker 1]
How many people feel like meditation is better before yoga?

[Speaker 2]
How many people feel meditation without yoga is better? Shang Rinpoche is a famous Lama. Shang Rinpoche.

LONG NGAN KHOM GYIS BAG CHAGS SHOG BRDZUN DA LONG NGAN KHOM means you got used to like reacting to your husband in the kitchen.

[Speaker 1]
You got used to it.

[Speaker 2]
Every time you do it one more time, you will do it ten more times.

[Speaker 1]
You see?

[Speaker 2]
BAG CHAGS SHOG BRDZUN means you start to form a ... say BAG CHAGS. BAG CHAGS.

BAG CHAGS means a habit seed.

[Speaker 1]
Like you get married, you go on a honeymoon, everything's sweet, and then you have your first fight, and it's small.

[Speaker 2]
You say, I'd like to go to the Italian restaurant, and she says, I prefer Japanese. You know, and that first fight is very important. Try to make it as short as possible, because it will form a habit.

[Speaker 1]
Then the second fight is easier, and third fight, fourth fight, fifth fight, and the fight will escalate also. You start with eyebrows, Japanese, okay?

[Speaker 2]
Then you start to use your mouth in Japanese.

[Speaker 1]
Then there's some kind of line where you say something, you know, like, you know, I don't really like Japanese. And it can escalate into pushing, and then hitting, then divorce.

[Speaker 2]
Okay?

[Speaker 1]
So, back at the first eyebrow argument, try to control your eyebrows.

[Speaker 2]
Okay, we can go to Japanese. Okay, understand?

[Speaker 1]
Don't get the small habit, because it will grow. Every marriage where someone is hitting another person, and sometimes it's the woman hitting the man, it started with the eyebrow.

[Speaker 2]
So, if you can stop the eyebrows, it won't get worse. Okay? NYON MONGS LA GOM GYI BYED PAS SEMS YIN PAS SKABS So, if you get used to having a fight, BYANG DANG SOGS SNGAM SNGAM ZHUGS KYI BYUNG Say SNGAM SNGAM.

SNGAM SNGAM. Okay?

[Speaker 1]
The more eyebrow fights you have, the more SNGAM SNGAM ... SNGAM SNGAM means the fights happen more easily. Okay?

It's easy to start a fight after three or four eyebrow fights. SNGAM SNGAM means it just comes automatically almost.

[Speaker 2]
Okay. RANG RE'ANG SKYE BA SNGAM NAS KHON PA BYED CHUNG GI DBANG GIS And then we have habits from our past lives.

[Speaker 1]
We are born with habits from our past lives.

[Speaker 2]
I don't see how you can see two kids born and not believe in a past life.

[Speaker 1]
The first kid is like nervous and crying all the time and fighting, and the second kid has a completely different personality from the first hour. So, they are bringing their personality from their past lives.

[Speaker 2]
And if you're a parent, okay, then don't freak out about your kid's misbehavior and crying. Oh, I'm a bad parent.

[Speaker 1]
My kid is grumpy all the time.

[Speaker 2]
It's not you, okay? You're like 1%.

[Speaker 1]
99% is the billion lifetimes before that. So, of course we all want our kids to be perfect, but 99% of what your kid is, is not up to you.

[Speaker 2]
So, don't get too worried.

[Speaker 1]
Don't feel guilty. Now, if the kid is kind, compassionate, intelligent, this is genetic.

[Speaker 2]
This comes from you. So, you can be happy. Okay, so, RANG RE'I YANG SKYE BA SNGA MA'I GOM PA BYAS CHUNG GI DBANG GIS Because of our habits in our past life, our personality has some strong points and our personality has some weak points from past life.

Then some people, just a person does the eyebrow thing, they will get very angry. Or some people, I don't know, they see a K, the letter K, and they dream about Krispy Kreme for two hours.

[Speaker 1]
This is past life, okay?

[Speaker 2]
So, don't take it ... don't take yourself so seriously, okay? You are working against a billion lifetimes of habits.

Somebody ...

[Speaker 1]
there's a famous story in the monastery. Somebody met a monk. Do you meditate?

He said, yeah, I meditate. How long are you meditating for? So, in my case it's like over 40 years.

Then they say, are you a better person than 40 years ago? Did the meditation help you?

[Speaker 2]
Then the monk answered, honestly, no. Then the other guy is surprised, you know.

[Speaker 1]
Then, why do you keep doing it? Can you imagine how bad I will be if I don't meditate? Just to stay equal.

It's progress.

[Speaker 2]
Okay, ,GOMS DOR LA GOMS PA DAG GIS DBANG GIS, ,MIG LOB LTA BA TZAM YANG MI SOS PA SOGS, So, if you have a lot of past life seeds for getting upset, then the word here is called MIG LOB LTA.

[Speaker 1]
Then MIG LOB LTA ... I'll show you MIG LOB LTA, okay? So, Aldo, say something.

Hi, Geshe-la.

[Speaker 2]
That's MIG LOB LTA.

[Speaker 1]
You ready?

[Speaker 2]
MIG LOB LTA. Hi, Geshe-la. And then he will get upset.

Okay, I didn't say anything.

[Speaker 1]
I didn't make a bad face. I just ... Then, if you have past life seeds, someone just look at you the wrong way.

[Speaker 2]
You'll get angry.

[Speaker 1]
Dirty Harry? You're too young. Forget it.

I'll tell you soon. There's a famous cowboy, Clint Eastwood. Someone just look at him like ...

And he's like ...

[Speaker 2]
Okay. ,'DI DAG LA NYEN PO BSTAN NAS, ,MTHO BYED CI THOB BYED PA LA GZHAN MED, And there's ... you have to try to recognize that you have certain habits left over from your past life.

[Speaker 1]
Okay?

[Speaker 2]
We all have some weakness which we brought into this life from our past life. Some people have food weakness. Krispy Kreme weakness.

Krispy Kreme.

[Speaker 1]
Some people have anger weakness. Some people have money weakness. Sex weakness.

[Speaker 2]
Then, according to Buddhism, you cannot be born here if you don't have a weakness.

[Speaker 1]
So, listen, we all have. We said at the beginning of the class, don't think your problems are worse than other people's.

[Speaker 2]
And don't think there's anybody in this room who is very much better than you. There's not. Including Geshe Michael.

[Speaker 1]
Really. Okay?

[Speaker 2]
Some people are 99% easy to get angry, and some people are 98% easy to get angry, and there's nobody under that.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? The best person in this realm, desire realm, is ... sorry, the worst person, is 99% messed up.

[Speaker 2]
And the best person is 98% messed up.

[Speaker 1]
Really.

[Speaker 2]
Honestly. Otherwise you ... actually you cannot come here unless you are 98 or 99.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? So, if you have some bad habits, don't take it so seriously. Okay?

It's not the end of the world. Okay?

[Speaker 2]
And actually, you don't have any choice, just deal with it.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? You're stuck here.

[Speaker 2]
What's the biggest argument against suicide in Buddhism?

[Speaker 1]
What's the biggest argument against suicide in Buddhism?

[Speaker 2]
It doesn't work. You just wasted some bullets. You just start over again, and you have all this pain from the gun.

So, it doesn't help.

[Speaker 1]
If you kill yourself and everything becomes black, and your life is finished, then maybe we should think about it.

[Speaker 2]
But it doesn't work.

[Speaker 1]
Five minutes later you're another person. So, deal with who you are. Try to improve.

Okay, we don't have much time. We have a few minutes, because today is a holiday.

[Speaker 2]
This is the holiday of the woman Buddha.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? If you go out and look at the moon tonight, we call it a tenth moon. So, it's two thirds full.

[Speaker 2]
And every month that's the holiday of the woman Buddha.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? So, we schedule all the fun things for today.

[Speaker 2]
Burning down the hotel.

[Speaker 1]
Things like that. Okay, I'm going to start the sixth pistol just for good luck. It sounds like sex pistol.

Yeah. Okay.

[Speaker 2]
Here we go. ,'KHYOD DRID PA YID LA BYAS PA NAS, ,'DU BYED KYI YOD DANG ZHES RENG YID YOD SOGS LA, ,'YANG NAS YANG DU GRO LTAG STE, ,TSUL SHING MA YIN PA YID LA BYAS PA STE, This has to do with monks training. And it's where you choose to put your eyes.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? If you have a problem with Krispy Kreme, and you walk by a Krispy Kreme donut shop on your right side, you have an option. Look across the street to the left, and keep walking.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? Keep walking. Okay?

That's all.

[Speaker 1]
You have control over where your eyes go. Meditation is a very important Buddhist practice, but controlling your eyes is also a very cool practice. Okay?

Like, I don't know, you had a fight with somebody in this room, and they're over there, and Geshe-la is over there.

[Speaker 2]
You can watch the video.

[Speaker 1]
You have choice where you put your eyes.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? So, you know, everybody talks ...

[Speaker 1]
in the whole world, everybody's talking about meditation. Nobody's talking about eye control.

[Speaker 2]
But you have ...

[Speaker 1]
you can move your eyes left and right.

[Speaker 2]
Then don't focus on things that give you trouble.

[Speaker 1]
Okay?

[Speaker 2]
Then again, it's just a pistol. It's not a big gun. Okay?

Sometimes you can't avoid looking at something.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? If you have trouble keeping your marriage vows, you're always checking out the cute guapas and guapos. Then learn to control your eyes.

Some guapa or guapo is over here.

[Speaker 2]
Then learn to put the eyes over here. Okay?

[Speaker 1]
And it's not a permanent solution, but it helps.

[Speaker 2]
It gives you a little less trouble in your life.

[Speaker 1]
Learn to tell your eyes where to go. You are the boss of your eyes. So, be the boss of your eyes.

Don't let them go where they're not supposed to go.

[Speaker 2]
And it becomes a habit. I went to work for 19 years in the bus.

[Speaker 1]
Oftentimes it's two hours each way.

[Speaker 2]
So, the bus station in the morning has, I don't know, Port Authority, 100,000 people, and all the ladies are dressed up for work.

[Speaker 1]
They actually do their makeup on the bus. It takes a lot of practice because it's ... So, it was very challenging for me, just to walk through the bus station.

So, I'm like ...

[Speaker 2]
And you get used to it.

[Speaker 1]
And if you're married, it really hurts your partner when you're like, you know, with some cute girl or some cute boy.

[Speaker 2]
It hurts your partner.

[Speaker 1]
They're not stupid. They can feel where your eyes go.

[Speaker 2]
And it's very respectful of your partner. If you're together with them, and some guapa or guapo walks by, then that's the moment to look at your wife or husband. And it's respectful.

[Speaker 1]
They will be grateful. Because they feel where your eyes are going.

[Speaker 2]
They know.

[Speaker 1]
So, you're like ... Okay, keep your eyes on your wife or your husband.
