[Speaker 1]
Senor Nick, time for IDIM examination. Both, yeah. Let's do ones that we didn't do yet.

Just kidding. It's emptiness. You're right.

This person went this morning. I'm not going to do Penny again. I won't do you again.

Okay, don't worry. You ready Nick? Nick, you got one?

Make it hard. This person's really smart. Put it up now.

Give people a few seconds. See if you put it up first, and make them think about it. He just came out of the ball, I'm sure.

This is our participant in this retreat. Thank you. So this IDIM is about the fact that there's a possibility.

Tomorrow we could be a mosquito. Today we have the body of a human. So should I say it in Spanish?

Please. This IDIM is about the possibilities or the potential that everything has. Today we have the human body, tomorrow we could be a mosquito.

And the solution. The solution. The solution.

Ah, do it now. Before you ... Good enough, good.

The classical question is, what will you be a year from now? Because normally most animals take a few months to have a baby. You have to turn yourself.

No, they have to ... Can you turn up Alejandro's mic a little bit? Sí.

Yeah. Okay. Nick, we're ready for another one.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. It's exciting. Yeah.

No, you see, if you're a good teacher, okay? Show the IDIM first, stall for a few minutes, everybody will think. His mic is still not working.

Oh, that's a hard one. It still has to go up. It still has to go up.

Okay. You ready? Ready.

Francisco Javier Muñoz. Ah, let's go. You've got to earn your massage.

I think it was about saying goodbye to the people we're not going to see again. Good. Very good.

Yeah. Thank you. Excellent.

I'll tell Veronica that you were in a good mood. Yeah. We were studying that.

I remember me and Aldo were talking about it, but ... Is this the last time I see you? Is this the last time I see you?

You can just say it like that. Okay. Let's do another one.

Nick, Señor Nick. Oh, this is sad. Este es triste.

And the question goes to Erin. Okay.

[Speaker 2]
Well, this is a picture of someone who, at 9-11, was ... was climbing outside of the window, the burning building, and the idea is that if someone could help you in the suffering, they would.

[Speaker 1]
Nice. Very nice. What's the other classical example?

[Speaker 2]
Oh, the dentist.

[Speaker 1]
Nice. If there was a being in the universe who had that much power and who had that much love, there would be no dentists. Seriously.

If there was a person who could cancel your karma, then there would be no suffering. Now ... but there's another question I think you have to ask at the same time.

If a person believes, for example, in Jesus, with all their heart, and they've done some bad things before in their life, but they make a sincere prayer to Jesus that the power of that karma should be stopped, and I will say, especially ... we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and we have done those things which we ought ... we have not done those things which we ought to have done, and we have not done those things which we ought to have done, and there is no health in this.

But thou, O Lord ... Okay, if you say this confession prayer, if you say this confession prayer, and here's the punchline, and if in your heart you make a sincere decision to try not to do it again, could that person take your karma away? Yeah, we say yes.

We say yes. Okay, we say yes. If a person really believes in Jesus, and especially if they make a decision not to do a bad deed again, according to the laws of karma, that karma will be finished.

But, there's a small but at the bottom of the contract. Yeah, it will ripen in a small way. So, instead of getting cancer, you will get a bad headache for one day.

Okay? We believe it's possible. We believe that that's true.

Penny, your name came up three times already. I'm sorry. I guess it's a sign, you know.

You got one, Nick? Oh, there we go. Uh-oh.

This is a happy man, right? I think so. It should be a good example.

[Speaker 2]
Role model. No Hong Kong help. No Hong Kong help.

She's cheating. She's translating. I'm giving you the answer.

[Speaker 1]
Fifty dollars. No cheating in Mexico. Anybody want to help Penny?

For free. For free. Mariana?

Say it again. I'm sorry.

[Speaker 2]
This time you got a human life, so you should use it, you have to use it, and you have to use it now.

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, good. Good. You can invite Germany to Hong Kong.

You have a human life now. You have a good chance. Practice.

Try. What I also wanted you to feel from this photo, is don't be fanatic, okay? Don't be like, you know.

Those religious guys who never smile is dangerous. They are the ones who blow up things. Okay?

So, have fun. Life is short. Enjoy yourself.

Serve other people. Do your meditation. Okay?

And sometimes go to the coffee shop and act silly. We have two of the directors of the Three Jewels coffee shop, Dharma Center in New York here. We'd like to welcome you, and thank you for coming.

They said, Geshe-la, we have a yoga studio, we have a meditation studio, and you cannot reach it without going to the coffee shop. Geshe-la, we have a yoga studio, we have a meditation studio, and you cannot reach it without going to the coffee shop. I was like, Chido.

Mask Chido. Cool. Super cool.

Okay. Nick, one more suffering. Wow.

We didn't do this one, huh? Okay. You guys ready?

Now, I have a question. If you only have two parents in Mexico, how do you have twelve names? Okay, I'm not asking, are you?

Okay, you ready? Everybody ready? Okay, what's this picture mean?

They're suffering all time. All time they're suffering. Every time.

That's every picture. Anyway, she needs help.

[Speaker 2]
She needs help.

[Speaker 1]
Am I there when others are in pain? That's pretty good. Yeah.

Okay, good. These people lost people they love. Okay?

And it can happen anytime. And it can happen in ten minutes. And the way to stop it is to be there for other people who had this happen to them.

She did already. Nick, give me another item. Come on.

Ew. Estefanía Hernández. Estefanía Hernández.

Nesta. She escaped already. Okay.

Did they do one already? No. Gabriela Galoto.

Gabriel Galoto. No? Come on, this one's easy.

This is Buenos Aires, right? Yay, Buenos Aires!

[Speaker 2]
Yay!

[Speaker 1]

[Speaker 1]
So, she's saying that this is birth and we forgot about it. How painful it was. We forget about how painful it was and we gotta help others that are going through this.

I don't understand. You said, if someone goes through this, or for them not to go through this? But, for them not to go through this, what was the solution?

Ah, okay. In order for, if you don't want that to happen again to you, you have to help people who are going through the same situation. Nice.

If I have any money, I will give you. Talk to my banker, Mr. Human Dictionary. Okay, stay on your knee, one more.

Uno mas. ZU ZU ZU ZU? Donde ZU ZU?

ZU ZU Let's go! Wait, here comes your microphone. Oh, wait, wait, wait, microphone, microphone.

Okay.

[Speaker 2]
La importancia de poder escuchar y responder a esa escucha, eso de estar atento.

[Speaker 1]
The importance of being able to listen and being aware and awake to listen. Nice, good. I'll ask one more question.

Anybody, free question. In Kamalashila, this picture was three teacups. Anybody?

I want a microphone. Erin's choosing.

[Speaker 2]
Put up your hand. Es tener la motivacion correcta para escuchar las enseñanzas.

[Speaker 1]
To have the correct motivation to listen to the teachings.

[Speaker 2]
Que lo que escuches no olvides.

[Speaker 1]
To be able to memorize and not forget what you heard. Don't forget what you learned. Don't be like a teacup with a hole in the bottom.

How about the teacup upside down? What's that meaning? Que estes abierto a recibir nuevas enseñanzas.

Yeah, yeah, be open to new ideas. And the third teacup, you are having tea, but somebody put old coffee in the bottom.

[Speaker 2]
Que no este limpia, que no tengas la motivacion correcta.

[Speaker 1]
Not clean, not having the proper motivation. Oh really? Yeah, don't mix up a lot of systems, okay?

Find the system that fits you. During that time, you should go to many grocery stores and see who has the best product. Si estas buscando un sistema filosofico que vaya contigo, tienes que ir y probar de todo.

Como si fueras al supermercado hasta que encuentres la filosofia que te vaya bien a ti. Then you make your decision. And after you made your decision, don't mix things up.

Okay? For example, we are teaching Tsongkapa's system. And some guy came to me recently in Sedona.

He said, Oh, I learned a new kind of meditation. And I would like to teach it to all of your students. Then I said, you know, I don't want to sound sectarian, but my job in this life is to pass on pure Tsongkapa.

Then, because I tried it and many unbelievable things happened to me, and so I believe it. Then I don't know about other systems. I didn't learn other systems.

Maybe they are nice, I don't know. This one works. Then I would like to have the supermarket, the super, supermercado?

Tsongkapa's supermercado. And people know, if they come to this supermarket, they get pure Tsongkapa. So my goal in my life is to teach pure Tsongkapa.

And to be honest, I don't have time to try everything else. I really don't. But this one I tried, and I had the greatest thing that could happen to a person in their life.

It happened to me. I'm satisfied. So I love you.

I respect you. Good luck with your meditation system. But I want to make the best Tsongkapa supermercado.

Okay, one more for fun, Nick. Oh, that's ... okay.

Beatrice? No? Let's try one more person.

Their name is right here. Ooh, New York. Jacqueline Autry.

She's hiding under the chair.

[Speaker 2]
New York is in the house.

[Speaker 1]
New York in the house. Big support from the New York fans. Are you Yankees or Mets?

Tell me that first. Yankees or Mets. I don't watch baseball.

Listen, this is also the lineage, you know. You are Mets, okay?

[Speaker 2]
Okay, okay.

[Speaker 1]
Mets. Sera-mei, gyu-mei, Mets. Sera-mei, gyu-mei, Mets.

So all of these are ... well, first of all, Geshe-la is on the left here. And these are students of Ken Rinpoche who all did amazing things in their lives.

And the line for this idea is that half the people in this room, in this room here, will die at some point. And ... well, we all will.

[Speaker 2]
Well, maybe.

[Speaker 1]
The point is to do it now. Like, practice now. Yeah.

Okay, great. Give her a hand, Yan. I didn't hear the Mets.

I see our list. There's a story. There's a story.

At that time, the Mets had the record for losing the most games in history. In one year, they lost 100 games. This is ...

nobody ever came close to that. Then my lama decided to intervene. And every night, he turned on the television, you know?

And he's got his mala, you know? And he's like ... Then, I don't know if you guys know baseball.

Darryl Strawberry. It's the playoffs. He hits a line drive, which is never a home run.

It's just going straight over the ... parallel to the ground. So, the ball's going like this, and my lama's going ...

It hit the top of the wall, and it fell over. And they won the World Series. Then, I said, Lama, this is cheating, you know?

I'm going to teach you tomorrow the mantra. So, don't forget to come. Honestly, I'm going to teach it to you tomorrow.

But, at that time, guess what book we are studying? We are studying the Lam Rim. Same book.

And in the book, it said, there will come a time when half of the people in this room are dead. And we're all like, yeah, okay. So, now it came true.

Half these people are dead. We took a photo today. Understand?

Got it? Okay. Alright.

Okay, now you are depressed. Before we start the Heart Sutra tonight, we have someone here who's visiting from far away. And they heard about the Guadalajara team.

They heard, oh, there's 600 million people in the world speak Spanish. And how wonderful it would be if we could translate all of these things into Spanish for 600 million people. Native language, it's the second largest in the world.

So, if you want to change the world, which is what bodhisattvas do, you should have a team to translate all these books into Spanish. So, this person worked very hard in their country. They didn't find one gato gordito?

Fat fish here. Oh, fat fish. They found many, many, many small people.

They put a can in many homes. And they asked people, put 30 cents American in the can every day. And they got thousands of people.

And because of that, we have a very strong translation team in Guadalajara. They are translating hundreds and hundreds of pages. And since the lady is here today, now I'm going to turn it over to this guy.

Explain what it is. Okay, so, we want to make you an offering, Yaoli and Emily Chan. We want to thank everybody from Taiwan.

Woohoo! We want to thank everybody from Taiwan to help us do the Sonkapa Supermercado en Español. We want to thank you for helping us with the Sonkapa Supermercado en Español.

Thank you. It is made by the Huichol people, the people from Don Jesús. And it takes a lot of work, every single bead.

It's a lot of work. Yeah, these are like ... in Taiwan, you also have local people who were there before the other Chinese people came.

So, also in Mexico we have. And they make these ... they never made these statues before our group started.

And it takes many, many, many hours to put each bead on it. Anyway, thank you very much. Gracias.

Thank you. Did you tell somebody tonight?

[Speaker 2]
I should talk to you tonight.

[Speaker 1]
I'd ask to talk to mom, because kids are better in the morning.

[Speaker 2]
I feel invited.

[Speaker 1]
Okay, let me know. Okay, Heart Sutra. Okay.

GAL TE RANG BZHIN GYIS MA BRUB NA MED PA means gyur ram nyam na, means ... It's very famous in Buddhism. When we say emptiness, there are many, many famous mistakes about emptiness.

There's a funny DCI story, but I'll tell you the ... I'll just summarize it for you. Some people think emptiness means close your eyes, and everything's black, and don't think about anything.

But we would say it's a wrong idea about emptiness. Okay? If you really understand emptiness, you can make good things happen in your life.

You can make ... I made the largest diamond jewelry company in the world. With no experience.

I don't know anything about business, and I hate business. But, if you understand emptiness, you can easily succeed hundreds of millions of dollars, okay? Then some people ...

So, emptiness doesn't mean you close your eyes, and everything is black. And emptiness doesn't mean you close your eyes, and you let the thoughts fly through the sky of your mind, and you don't connect to them. That's not emptiness.

And if you spend a lot of time on that, you're wasting your time. What's the karmic result of sitting and watching your breath for a long ... for years, or letting thoughts go through your mind for years?

What's the karmic result? You're not listening. You're not listening to your breath.

Yeah, but in this life ... Don't answer until I translate, please. Can you ask again?

What's the karmic result of breathing? It's the karmic result of doing those meditations. Of meditating.

Of looking at the breath. Of looking at the breath. What's the karmic result of doing the breath and observing your thoughts?

Just observing the thoughts. Just observing the thoughts. Did you see my cell phone?

No. It was with my room key. Now my room key is also missing.

Okay, that's the karmic result. You just become spaced out. You cannot make a $200 million company.

Not possible. You can't even get to work because you cannot find your car keys. Okay, also emptiness doesn't mean everything's illusion.

There's some famous ancient misunderstanders of emptiness in Asia. Everything's illusion. Nothing matters.

There's no good, there's no bad. Somebody kiss you, don't smile. Neutral.

Someone hit you, don't cry. Neutral. Emptiness means neutral.

Not happy. Not sad. Everything's illusion.

Okay, that's crazy. Everyone likes to be kissed more than to be hit, okay?

[Speaker 2]
That's so neutral.

[Speaker 1]
You know that, okay? So it's not emptiness. Okay, so what is emptiness?

Now this guy asked a question in the Heart Sutra reading. If things don't exist through some nature of their own, does that mean they don't exist? Now for ...

Can I afford that? Let me think. Yeah.

For a hundred dollars. In the lion's dance meditation, what is the exact words we use to say that something doesn't exist through some nature of its own? I'll give you a clue.

And it's fifty dollars now. It's a very short word. That's a long word.

Huh? Does ... Here he says, doesn't exist by nature.

Okay. We're down to twenty dollars. We're down to twenty dollars.

[Speaker 2]
In ...

[Speaker 1]
I hate you. I mean, I really hate you. Three thousand and twenty dollars.

At least you could give twenty dollars to somebody else. I mean, you're going to be reborn as a praetor for sure. Okay.

I mean, it's up to you. Oh yeah, the word in. Okay?

It's the most powerful word for self-existence. In. Yeah.

Does the patience of your teacher exist in there? Okay? So you go to all these Buddhist teachings.

You go to all these Buddhist teachings. They are saying, this quality is, your teacher's patience is not dependently originating. Your teacher's patience is empty of any inherent, intrinsical self-existence.

Yeah, I know. Yeah, you hear, you heard that. It's more simple than that.

In life, and in religion, simple is more correct. I hear that. Okay?

The patience you see your teacher having is not in there. and the question that came here is, does that mean my teacher doesn't really have patience? No, it doesn't mean that.

Of course not. Yeah, he says, the patience appears. The patience exists, but it's not in your teacher.

It's on them. And it's coming from you. It's like you are loaning your teacher a coat or a nice Paraguay shirt.

It's like you dressed your teacher in patience. It didn't grow from their skin. It's not inside them and come out.

It's all coming from you. You were patient in your past life. And you planted patience seeds.

And now you see patience. Now you see patience. What's...well, I don't want to lose more money. There's a simple proof of that. You know, ask somebody else, what's your opinion of my teacher? Do you think they're so patient?

Then they say, no, your teacher's just after your money. Your teacher's trying to get your money. Are you crazy?

They're not a nice person. When I look at them, I see a greedy person. Then you're like, no, no, when I look at them, I see a patient person.

One person sees a patient person. One person sees a greedy person. Who's right?

Wrong, okay? Both, got it? They are greedy.

To a greedy person, okay? Who has greedy seeds. Is the patient person seeing the correct teacher and the greedy person is seeing the incorrect teacher?

No! The greedy person sees a greedy person and the patient person sees a patient person. They're both correct!

In the greedy person's world, this teacher is a greedy person. And in the good person's world, the teacher is a patient person. Got it?

Okay, alright. So, should the patient person fight with the person who calls their lama greedy? Should they go on the internet and try to out-internet the other guy?

Okay. There's a tradition in Buddhism. They say, don't try to defend your teacher.

If they're really a teacher, they don't need it. They don't need it. Okay?

The way to protect a person is if they make good seeds. You think your lama doesn't make good seeds? You want to protect them?

So, there's a tradition in Buddhism not to defend your teacher. Okay? And I also don't need it, okay?

But I ... I appreciate it. I appreciate the idea, but ...

but I don't need it.

[Speaker 2]
Okay, alright.

[Speaker 1]
But ... Anybody want to take a shot at why the teacher ... the greedy teacher is like the moon?

Alice, you going to try it? Wait, wait, loud, okay? Nice, nice.

Yeah, nice, very nice. Okay, you want to translate that? Your own qualities reflect upon your teacher, right?

Yeah. Now ... What?

Basically that you're seeing your own qualities in the same way that you see the moon reflected in Lake Chalapa. Now somebody asked another ... more difficult question.

SA BU'I KHONG KHONG BU'I SA SA GYUR SU KHONG KHONG GYUR SU SA The Chinese edition of the Heart Sutra. Your body is emptiness. Emptiness is your body.

Emptiness is nothing different from your body, and your body is nothing different from emptiness. Emptiness is nothing different from your body, and your body is nothing different from emptiness. These are called the four answers.

LEN ZHI Famous Heart Sutra piece. This piece is called the four answers. So, somebody came and asked a question.

Okay, Choney Lama, you've been talking about how the ... about the moon on the surface of Lake Chalapa. And ...

and you're comparing it to the Heart Sutra statement. Which means you're saying my body is similar to the moon on the lake. So, are they the same?

Yes or no? Is it a good example or not? Is it the same in every way?

I'll say the question again, okay? And if no one can answer it, you give me $3,000. Just kidding!

Just kidding! I don't want to make you bankrupt. The sutra said, the Heart Sutra said, your body is empty.

And emptiness is your body. And then Choney Lama said, that's the same as the moon on a lake. Susanna?

She said, in this way they are similar. The moon reflected on the lake is an illusion, and that your body is also an illusion. Let me say it this way, okay?

And stay with me, okay? We got six minutes. My teacher used to say, one day I'm going to be gone, and you're going to miss me and wish you had listened for the last six minutes.

So, here's the question. Traditionally, in ancient times in India, they believed that all crops ripened from the sunlight, and the sun is the source of all heat. And when people are having mental problems, or they're depressed, the doctor will take them out on the stone steps when there's a moonlight, and say, please sit in the moonlight.

And the doctor will say, please sit in the moonlight. Because, while the sun has the power to make heat, the moon has the power to make calmness. The moonlight, if the moonlight touches your skin, you feel more calm.

So, I'm not saying it's true or false. I'm just saying, let's say it's true. If the moonlight touches your skin, you will be less depressed, and you'll be more calm.

You get a moon tan. Okay? Now, suppose it's correct.

Now, suppose one of the functions of the body is to get me from here to my room, so I can have dessert, which Andriana doesn't know about yet. Okay, my body has a function. These two legs have a function.

They're supposed to take me to my room where my dessert will be waiting. Okay? My legs have a function.

My body, SOS, SOS BU'I KHONG, my body. So, the moon has a function of making things cool. The body has a function of getting me to my room.

Now I ask you again, is the example exactly the same? Why not Erin? She's a lawyer.

They're always thinking about this stuff. Nice! Okay?

Yeah, a reflection of the moon in the water. Doesn't work like the moon works. It doesn't do what the moon does.

It looks like a moon, but it's not a moon. Now the body, according to the Heart Sutra, is not real. But can it take me to my room?

In two minutes. Yes. Okay?

Now, why are we talking about that? The guy asked a question. Choney Lama, I don't like your example.

The moon on the water doesn't do anything that the moon does. But the body, which the sutra says is empty, can take me to my room. If a thing works, can we say it must be real?

And I'll say, I'll give you a little taste, okay? And it's very deep, and it's very important for the rest of your life, so give me these two minutes, okay? I gave this teaching in Ireland ...

I don't remember when ... 1998. Before Aisha was born.

I got some points, right? Never mind. And there was a guy standing in the back.

And I remember, he got very disturbed. He's like, if everything comes from seeds, are you proposing to me that the gasoline, the petrol in my car, that I used to get here from Dublin to Galway, are you proposing to me that it did not move my car? I mixed in some Indian, I'm sorry.

That's not an Irish accent. Because because if what we teach in this tent is correct, then what moves your car is not gasoline. What moves your car is that you gave rides to other people.

Oh, Geshe-la! Are you proposing that a car filled with gasoline cannot get from Chalapa area to Guadalajara downtown? If I don't have the karma?

Exactly.

[Speaker 2]
Exactly.

[Speaker 1]
You will have an accident. Somebody will steal your car. Okay?

The road will be smashed up, but they will be putting water pipes under the road, get it? If you have not given other people rides in your car in the past, who needed to get somewhere, you can have a car with a full tank of gasoline, and for some reason you will not get to Guadalajara tonight. Geshe-la, now, Geshe-la, now is too much, okay?

So really, what you're saying is if I don't have money for gasoline, I can still get home to Guadalajara tonight? Yeah! Me and Veronica just went to the airport in a big, ugly American Chevrolet, sorry.

You know? And I ... I didn't have any money for gas.

I didn't take any money. And I still got to the airport. Okay?

That proves if you have the seeds, you will get to the airport. If you don't have the seeds, but you have the gas, you will still not get to the airport. Understand?

That's why some people with gas don't get where they're going. And that's why some people without gas do get where they're going. That's a teaching on emptiness.

Can it help you? Yeah! Geshe-la, I want my car to work all the time.

I want a Toyota car that you can drive around for many years and then it never breaks and finally you give it to Nick. Okay? Okay?

Now, don't want your car to break, share your car. Help people. Give people rides.

Okay? Don't do your regular monthly oil change. Don't worry about it.

Many people died going to get their oil changed. Okay? Share your car and share everything else you have.

And you will always have enough. Alright, let's do a mandala offering. How about from Moscow?

Moscow, you want to do a mandala offering? Okay. I want the taller person.

Okay.
