[Speaker 2] Okay, good evening. [Speaker 1] Thank you for coming, especially new guests. [Speaker 2] I'm very grateful that you came. And you are very brave, because we are in the middle of the most difficult book in Buddhism. [Speaker 1] It's like coming to ... at the World Cup, and they are asking you to play. But my Chinese friends told me the first rule of a good teacher is to confuse the student completely. [Speaker 2] Then they think, wow, this is very deep, you know. [Speaker 1] I should come again. Maybe the second time I will understand something. So, okay. [Speaker 2] We usually do a special prayer before the teaching. [Speaker 1] And, you know, we hold our hands in a special way. If you don't know it, don't try to do it. It will take you half an hour. Maybe your fingers will get stuck. So, you can just go like this, okay? [Speaker 2] And the meaning of the prayer, which we do in Tibetan language, is, I offer the whole world for this teaching, but a perfect world. [Speaker 1] No war. No sickness. No death. No aging. This is the price of the teaching. Okay, this is what you have to pay for the teaching. [Speaker 2] It's an ancient tradition, 2,000 years old. [Speaker 1] For this teaching, I offer the whole world, perfect world. [Speaker 2] The name in Sanskrit is? Mandala. [Speaker 1] And when you say uno mundo or something like that, mundo comes from mandala. Okay? Alright. Anatole, you ready? Namo Buddhadhnyaya Khyal Tsu Chi. Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam gi. Drona penchir Sangye Drupal Chok. Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam gi. Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam gi. Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam gi. Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam gi. Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam gi. [Speaker 2] Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam gi. Dhak gi chen yin gyi peh sanam We have a small college in the United States. [Speaker 1] She's one of ... [Speaker 2] I think four, five Mexican people came there. [Speaker 1] So, we're studying tonight the Heart Sutra. Sutra means a teaching that was given by Buddha directly. Heart means the subject of this sutra is the very heart of the teachings. It's very short. There are sutras which are two, three thousand pages long. This sutra is five pages long. We have a team which is translating the ancient books, like translating the Bible. They finished translating this about three weeks ago. This is an explanation of the Heart Sutra. [Speaker 2] In English it's about 200 pages. [Speaker 1] A Spanish team is translating it now in the car. So, we're just going to do the best part. [Speaker 2] Yesterday we explained what the heart means in the Heart Sutra. The heart is called emptiness. [Speaker 1] Then, when we say vacuidad, in English emptiness, people get a lot of strange ideas. For two thousand years. Some people say, oh, emptiness. I should close my eyes. [Speaker 2] Everything's black. This is ultimate reality. [Speaker 1] You know, I will go into the black. Then, supposed to be emptiness will make you successful. My Lama gave me an examination. [Speaker 2] He said, you learned emptiness for many years. [Speaker 1] Now I give you a final examination. I said, what's the examination? [Speaker 2] You go to New York City. You start a business. [Speaker 1] You see if you can use emptiness for the business. If the business succeeds, you understand emptiness. If the business fails, you fail your examination. You don't understand emptiness. So, if you understand emptiness correctly, it makes your business successful. You become financially independent. [Speaker 2] You can do anything. [Speaker 1] You have beautiful marriage. You have beautiful relationship with your business partners, your workers. [Speaker 2] Your health is good. You feel energy. I'm 65. I do ballet, okay? [Speaker 1] Your mind is peaceful. Everything is going good, if you really understand emptiness. So, my teacher gave me this test. [Speaker 2] I said, I don't want to go to New York. I'm very happy in the monastery, you know? [Speaker 1] In fact, New York is the last place I want to go to. And he said, you have to work, you have to start a business in New York, and you have to live in New Jersey. Then, I was living in California. [Speaker 2] I was surfing every day. [Speaker 1] I said, I don't want to go to New Jersey. New Jersey has a nickname in English, Armpit of America. [Speaker 2] This is where they make all the gasoline. The whole state smells bad. [Speaker 1] He said, you have to live in New Jersey, you have to start a business in New York. [Speaker 2] Emptiness Examination. [Speaker 1] Then, for like six months I didn't go. You cannot say no to your Lama. [Speaker 2] In Buddhism, you cannot say no to your Lama. [Speaker 1] So, but I learned what you say to your Lama. Now that karma is coming back to me, all my students say the same thing. [Speaker 2] He said, did you get a job in New York yet? Oh, yeah, almost, almost got the job. Very soon, very soon. [Speaker 1] It's like six months, seven months, eight months. Then finally, I have no choice. [Speaker 2] I have to start a business. [Speaker 1] I don't like business, and I don't want to do business. [Speaker 2] I asked him, what kind of business I have to do? Diamond business. Ah! [Speaker 1] Black diamond. [Speaker 2] Most dirty business. [Speaker 1] Then he said, go. No more delay. So, I used emptiness in my business. We start with three people, and we start with three diamonds. Then we use emptiness. Heart Sutra. And later, we are doing three hundred thousand diamonds every day. [Speaker 2] It's the largest diamond jewelry company in the world. [Speaker 1] Warren Buffett bought it. [Speaker 2] Warren Buffett la compro. [Speaker 1] There's a big fight between him and ... who's that guy, the cell phone guy? [Speaker 2] Steve Jobs? No. [Speaker 1] Carlos Salim. Carlos Salim and Warren Buffett, they are fighting for number one, number one. [Speaker 2] So, he bought our company. [Speaker 1] Two hundred fifty million dollars. [Speaker 2] Okay? So, emptiness works, and I passed the examination. [Speaker 1] Okay? And what I want to teach you tonight is that. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] It's an old book, 2,000 years old, but you can use it for everything. If you have marriage problems, you can use it in your marriage. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Then you'll have a beautiful marriage. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] One ... I went to talk a business conference in China. 150 business owners from Guangzhou. [Speaker 2] These guys are tough. [Speaker 1] Each one is like a ... there's one guy, he made three billion dollars in one month. [Speaker 2] Three billion US dollars. Then, they're all like this. [Speaker 1] Tough guys, tough guys. Tough Chinese guys. Like, two days I have to teach them, you know, about how to use emptiness in a business, you know? [Speaker 2] Then, on the second day, I said, anybody have a question? Then, one lady raised her hand. I said, yeah, what's your question? She said, I don't have to come to your talk. I'm already rich. I have huge company. Much bigger than your company. [Speaker 1] You know, I don't have to come to your talk. Then I said, well, why you come? [Speaker 2] I came here to ask you a question. What's the question? [Speaker 1] You're teaching how to use emptiness for success in the business. Yes, but can you use emptiness to fix your husband? Then I said, in my mind I thought they didn't teach me that in the monastery. But I said, is your husband broken? [Speaker 2] She said, yes. What's the problem? We're married for 30 years, you know? Then in China, the wife should cook. I accept that. It's a custom for 5,000 years in China. [Speaker 1] The wife should cook the dinner. I understand. [Speaker 2] And I'm not complaining about it. [Speaker 1] Dan shik, dan shik, what's it mean? [Speaker 2] But, but, but, not once did he wash the dishes. In 30 years. [Speaker 1] This is like 10,000 days, right? He didn't wash the dishes once. Can I use emptiness to force my husband to wash the dishes? Then I said, okay, I will teach you. Let's work together. And I gave her a suggestion based on emptiness. I came back one year later. [Speaker 2] She said, come to dinner at my house. I said, okay. [Speaker 1] Then her house is like, you know, the White House, you know? And the table is very big, very ... There's one table I saw there, it's a ... was it five million dollars, Orin? In Shenzhen? Five million dollar table. Then, there's this table. There's a small bell on top of the table. [Speaker 2] She said, sit down Geshe-la, sit down. [Speaker 1] Then I said, what's up, you know? [Speaker 2] She said, I will show you the power of emptiness. Then I said, okay. She picked up the bell, you know? Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Kitchen door opened. Husband comes out. He's wearing woman's apron. Yes, dear! Is dinner ready yet? No, I'm so sorry. Almost finished. [Speaker 1] Then he went inside the kitchen. Then she's like ... Then I said, what happened? [Speaker 2] She said, you taught me what to do. I used emptiness, you know? I used a lot of emptiness. First, he washed the dishes. Then I'm thinking, why should I stop there? [Speaker 1] Let's make him to cook also. That took a lot of emptiness. But, after a lot of emptiness, he cooked pretty good now. [Speaker 2] Now all the women are like ... All the men are like ... [Speaker 1] What do you think, Fernando? Should I teach you emptiness or not? [Speaker 2] It's okay? You don't mind? [Speaker 1] Okay, don't blame me later, okay? I already knew it! Okay, okay, okay. Four years ago. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. So, I'll teach emptiness very fast with a pen. Then the easy stuff is finished. After that, you're going to be confused, okay? [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] This is the traditional way to teach emptiness. Over 2,000 years ago. Teacher will ask a question. Then you guys have to answer, and don't ... Just relax, have fun. Whatever answer you want to give me, give me answer. Like, go to hell Geshe-la. It's okay. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] Ready? What's this thing? Yeah, it's a pen. [Speaker 2] Now, if a small dog come here ... [Speaker 1] No, translate! I was going to do the dog. Yeah, no, I'm going ... Yeah, good. What will the dog do with this thing? Yeah, he'll bite. [Speaker 2] Next question. The human sees this as a pen. [Speaker 1] When the dog looks at it, what does the dog see? [Speaker 2] Yeah, something to chew. Next question. Who's right? [Speaker 1] Yeah, both! No problem. [Speaker 2] Animal right. Right? [Speaker 1] Dog can use. Dog can enjoy. [Speaker 2] Human can write. That's not a problem. Now, nice question. If I put this thing here on this seat, and I say, all the humans have to go out. [Speaker 1] I say, all the dogs have to go out. [Speaker 2] Then all the dogs go out. [Speaker 1] All the humans go out. [Speaker 2] Place is empty. Nobody's here. At that time, is this pen or chew toy? Which one? Yeah, nothing! You don't have to be Buddhist philosopher. [Speaker 1] You can say, it's nothing. [Speaker 2] It's not a pen. [Speaker 1] It's not something to chew. It's just waiting, right? Now, by the way, that's vacuidad. So forget everything you ever heard, okay? [Speaker 2] Close your eyes. Thoughts come. Thoughts go. [Speaker 1] That's not emptiness, okay? If you do that, and you try to start a diamond company, you will lose all your diamonds. [Speaker 2] If you do that, and you try to start a diamond company, you will lose all your diamonds. [Speaker 1] That's not emptiness, okay? Some people told me, oh, I know what is emptiness. [Speaker 2] It's illusion. [Speaker 1] Nothing is real. Then when they say that, I just hit them very hard. Like, wow! What are you doing? I said, don't worry man, it's not real. These are not ... these are foolish, okay? [Speaker 2] These are ... They're not going to help you have a good life, okay? This one can help you. Why? When I come back, and I sit here, and I look down at this thing, what does it become? Pen. When I come back, it changes from nothing, it changes from vacuidad, and it becomes a pen. That's a proof that it's coming from me. If the dog come in before me, what does it become? Yeah, it become chew toy. [Speaker 1] Then you can ask your friends, is the pen come this way, or does the pen come this way? Which way? You know, we don't think about it much, but if you talk about it that way Geshe-la, I come in the room, I look down, it become a pen. [Speaker 2] The dog comes in, he look at it, it becomes a chew toy. When you say it that way, yeah, I think it must be coming from me. [Speaker 1] Okay? But it's not coming from you consciously? You cannot close your eyes and say, I want it to be a hundred dollar bill. [Speaker 2] You know? [Speaker 1] Wow, wow. Scott, you know what I'm going to ask for. [Speaker 2] Wow, wow, wow. [Speaker 1] Okay? I cannot close my eyes. Oh, this coming from me. [Speaker 2] I will make a hundred dollars. [Speaker 1] It doesn't work, alright? Everybody in the world wants everything, and they don't get it. [Speaker 2] So, it's empty before I came in the room. When I come in the room, a seed that was put in my mind last week, it opens. [Speaker 1] And a small ... This is very cool. The reason to meditate is one day you can see it happening. [Speaker 2] A small seed opens in your mind that you planted last week. [Speaker 1] A small picture of a pen, the picture is made of light, it comes out of your mind, and it makes this a pen. And everything in the world is coming from you. If that's true, then you can make a 250 million dollar company with no business experience and no interest in business. [Speaker 2] Okay? Just understand how to plant a seed. So, I have to teach you how to plant a seed. [Speaker 1] Okay, Scott, you ready? By the way, this is not a Heart Sutra program yet. This is a business program. [Speaker 2] So, Scott gave me a hundred dollar bill. And I'm going to show you how to plant a seed. [Speaker 1] Everything in the world is empty. [Speaker 2] Everything is empty. [Speaker 1] Everything is like the pen on the chair. It's empty. Okay? [Speaker 2] Then, if you plant a seed, when the seed opens next week, you will see a pen. [Speaker 1] Everything is like that. So, if you understand how to plant a seed, you can make 250 million dollars. It's fun, okay? There are four steps to planting a seed. [Speaker 2] I'll show you the four steps, then we'll start the Heart Sutra. [Speaker 1] But maybe you learn the Heart Sutra before you learn the Heart Sutra. Okay, so I have a hundred dollars. I want to make a thousand. I want to invest a hundred dollars, and I will make a thousand. [Speaker 2] I have to plant a seed in my mind. [Speaker 1] In the Heart Sutra system, I must plant a seed in my mind. There are four steps to plant a seed. By the way, we just got back from Taiwan, right? Yeah, 3,000 people came. Okay, and I told them, turn on your iPhone, video these four steps. Okay, ready? [Speaker 2] If you want. If you don't want to make 200 million dollars, you don't have to do it. [Speaker 1] If you want to have a fun life, I suggest you put it on your iPhone. Okay? It's free, okay? That's my suggestion. If you want to work your whole life and make nothing, it's okay. I'm not interested in that. Okay, so I'm going to ... four steps. I'm going to make a hundred dollars into a thousand dollars. Step number one. No, no, what's step one? No, no, I'm not giving you a hundred dollars. What is step number one? Yeah, decide what do you want. [Speaker 2] Anytime you plant a seed, make a decision. [Speaker 1] What do you want? Tonight, I want a thousand dollars. [Speaker 2] Or maybe you want your husband to wash the dishes. [Speaker 1] The husbands have to learn how to plant a seed never to wash the dishes. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] I'm teaching separate class, okay? You can plant more powerful seeds than your wife. Okay, so step number one. It can be, I want to be healthy. I want to do ballet when I'm 65. [Speaker 2] Or maybe I want to have a peaceful mind. [Speaker 1] Okay, up to you. You decide. Tonight, I want to make a thousand dollars. [Speaker 2] Step number one. Decide your goal. [Speaker 1] Step number two. You must find a karmic partner. You must find someone who wants the same thing. So Geshe Michael goes in the audience. [Speaker 2] He asks her to stand up. [Speaker 1] Please tell me your name. Verenice. Verenica? [Speaker 2] Verenice. [Speaker 1] Huh? [Speaker 2] Verenice. [Speaker 1] Oh, almost. Okay, Verenice. I think she will be my karmic partner. Step number two. Then I ask Verenice, Tonight, would you like to make three hundred dollars? [Speaker 2] She said, yeah, that's okay. [Speaker 1] Okay, so now I'm happy, she's happy. [Speaker 2] I found my karmic partner. [Speaker 1] Okay, by the way, this is not a demonstration. [Speaker 2] This is real. Within the next week, I will make a thousand dollars. [Speaker 1] Okay, so why I do this demonstration every night? I have to. [Speaker 2] I have a lot of bills, you know. [Speaker 1] Okay, step number two. I found karmic partner. [Speaker 2] Step number three, I ask Verenice to raise her hand like this. [Speaker 1] Okay, step number three is really planting the seed. Okay, ready? [Speaker 2] Uno. [Speaker 1] Dos. Tres. Close her hand. [Speaker 2] Close her hand. Okay, then let go. Now, when I let go, I see hand open. [Speaker 1] I see my hand. [Speaker 2] That image, my hand open, it comes to my eye. It goes through the eye, like a window, and it touches my mind, and it leaves an impression on my mind. [Speaker 1] Within three or four hours, this impression becomes a seed in the subconscious mind. [Speaker 2] When that seed opens, I will have a thousand dollars. It will come to me. Because you know from seeds of the tree, all trees are bigger than the seed. Seed is a hundred dollars. Thousand dollars will come back. [Speaker 1] Okay? Now, Geshe-la, you know, it sounds very spiritual. [Speaker 2] Geshe-la, it sounds very inspiring. [Speaker 1] But, in your mind, you have doubt. [Speaker 2] Geshe-la, my mother give money to so many people. She didn't make 250 million dollars. [Speaker 1] Yeah, you know what's the problem? Your mother didn't know step number four. [Speaker 2] What? [Speaker 1] If you plant a seed with veronese, it's possible that seed will take 100 years to open. So, duh, you have to put water on the seed. What's the water on the seed? [Speaker 2] Step number four. [Speaker 1] New York Times asked me, what's your secret? I said, step number four. They said, show me step number four. I will show you step number four. Ready? This is step number four. [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Before I go to bed tonight, I have to think about veronese. And I have to think about the seed. And I have to say, I'm so happy I made veronese happy. I'm so happy I gave something to her. Then go to bed. [Speaker 2] Go to sleep. [Speaker 1] All night, the water is going on the seed. When you are happy about a good thing that you did for somebody else, that puts water on the seed. If I sleep for eight hours, there will be eight hours of water on the seed. And it will open by next week. And a thousand dollars will come to me. And this is how I live. This is how I make my income. [Speaker 2] Help other people. Okay, turn off your cell phone. Now we start the Heart Sutra. Okay? If you understand it, your life is like, incredible. [Speaker 1] Super happy. If you don't understand it, then you will work for the rest of your life. Maybe you make some money, maybe you don't. This is up to you. Okay? This is also how you get your husband to wash the dishes, but you can ask Aldo to teach you. Okay, now I'm going back to the Sutra. Now I'm going to teach the real Sutra. We are going deeper. Okay? This teaching is not Geshe Michael's opinion. Okay? This is real. Okay? This Sutra taught by Buddha. So let's go to the source of all these four steps, and let's go to the source of all this dog and chewing the pen. [Speaker 2] Let's get the real teaching. [Speaker 1] And I'm doing this for six days, okay? Okay? [Speaker 2] Tonight is number two. [Speaker 1] Okay, here we go. We were quoting another Sutra called the Diamond Cutter Sutra, and Buddha is talking to one of his disciples. Then he said, you know, if you make a coffee for Buddha and offer it to the Buddha, do you get some good karma? Then the student's like, yeah, sure. That's like giving coffee to the Pope, or giving coffee to the Dalai Lama. Yeah, of course you're going to get a lot of good karma. Then Buddha asked his student, if you give coffee to a thousand Buddhas, is that good karma? Yeah, it's like a thousand times more, you know. Then Buddha asked his student, how many planets in this local galaxy, not all the universe, but in our galaxy, Milky Way galaxy, how many planets? Then student said, well in our spiritual book, it says there are 1 billion planets in our local area. Then Buddha said, well, suppose you cover those planets with diamonds. [Speaker 2] And you offer them to Buddha. Is that good karma? Yeah, of course. Then Buddha said, if you listen to the pen, and in your mind, okay, let's say you are coming tonight for the first time, and this guy talking crazy talk, the best thing he gave away hundred dollars. [Speaker 1] Then in your mind, you're like, I don't know, maybe this guy's like cult? Crazy guy? He looks a little strange. And, but, oh by the way, you look up Jewelry.com on your phone right now. The name cost 21 million dollars. [Speaker 2] How much? [Speaker 1] 21 million. [Speaker 2] We own it. Then, in your mind comes some doubt. [Speaker 1] Check your phone. If you want to check your phone, Jewelry.com. We own it. It's the most famous jewelry site in the world. Then you know, you say, oh this sounds like BS. Let me check. Yeah, they do own it. [Speaker 2] Maybe the guy's not crazy. Or maybe 50% crazy. Okay, you will ... yeah, there's Jewelry.com, okay? [Speaker 1] Then you will ... [Speaker 2] in your mind, tonight, if you think, just once tonight, maybe that guy is correct. [Speaker 1] In the Heart Sutra, Buddha said, the person who say in their mind, maybe that guy's not crazy, that person make more good karma than covering 1 billion planets with diamonds and offering to Buddha. [Speaker 2] Cool? I gave away a hundred dollars. [Speaker 1] By thinking about what I'm saying tonight, you just made billions of dollars. [Speaker 2] And not by saying, not by saying, I'm sure he's right. Just if you have a doubt in your mind. [Speaker 1] Either all the economists in the world are wrong, or that guy's crazy. Yeah, maybe, maybe he's got something there, you know? Maybe, just this much doubt, is more good karma than offering a billion worlds of diamonds to the Buddha. Okay, got it? [Speaker 2] Now we're going to the Heart Sutra, and the explanation of the Heart Sutra, about 300 years ago. [Speaker 1] DI SON NAMS CHE MANG DU SKYE NA, if that person got more good karma from just thinking maybe that guy's not crazy, GANG THET SONG MED PAR NYEN PA LTA CI MOD, Instead of that, if you say, I'm sure this guy's got something going on, this guy, I think it's definitely something, he's doing something cool. [Speaker 2] Much more powerful karma. The doubt is powerful karma. The decision that's cool is even more powerful. [Speaker 1] GANG GIS YI RGYAS CI NAS LUNG POG PA DANG, BYAS PA DANG, BYANG BA DANG, GZHAN DAG LA YANG, RGYA CHE RAB TU BSTOD PA LA LTA CI MOD, and if they translate the book into Spanish, billion times more good karma. They are working on it in the car on the way from the airport. He and Imelda, they're typing in the car, you know? We call karma pig. Puerco del Karma? Cerdos. [Speaker 2] Puercos? [Speaker 1] He's stealing all the good karma in this room. He's not sharing with everybody. [Speaker 2] At least I'm giving away money, you know? [Speaker 1] Him and Imelda, we want all the karma. [Speaker 2] We want all the good karma. [Speaker 1] We're going to translate this book. They make more good karma than the person who doesn't have doubt. Okay, got it? DANG BYANG BA DANG, GZHAN DAG LA YANG, RGYA CHE RAB, and somebody like Aldo, super karma pig. [Speaker 2] Geshe-la, I'm not going to translate. I'm going to teach it to people three nights a week. [Speaker 1] He gets much more good karma than than Alejandro. So, this guy looks very quiet, very polite. Actually, he's super karma pig, okay? He's taking all the good karma. Unbelievable. Okay, NYON PA NI GZHAN LA BSTOD PA'I PHAR SNGA MA SNGA MA LA'I PHYI MA BYIN PA NI PHAN YIN LHAG PA'I PHYIR BA'I BSTOD PA'I YIN NO Buddha said each one is more powerful than the next one, than the last one. STONG NYID MA RTOGS KYANG, DE LA SDUG BSNGAL GYI THEG TSONG BSKYED PA TZAM GYIS KYANG SRID PA GZHUL PAR BYED ZING GZHUL PAR, where's my human dictionary? Where's, look, what's GZHUL PAR? I bet you $50 you don't know what's GZHUL PAR. GZHUL, GZHUL, GZHUL PAR, H-R-U-L-P-O. Okay, you lose. I'm afraid he'll figure it out. So, we live, we do live in a big illusion. You know, we all live in a big illusion. You think to get my husband to wash the dishes, there's only two methods. We call violence or blackmail. [Speaker 2] What's the violence? [Speaker 1] You know, your husband don't wash the dishes. Then you're like, oh, you know, I don't know if I feel like cooking tomorrow. I'm pretty tired. [Speaker 2] I had to wash all the dishes. [Speaker 1] You understand what I'm saying? Tomorrow? That's called violent method. What's the blackmail method? After dinner, you go to bed, the husband wants to make sex. And you're like, oh, I'm so tired, you know? I had to wash the dishes. Maybe tomorrow I won't be so tired. Understand? That's called blackmail. These are the two ways to get your husband to wash the dishes. [Speaker 2] Question, does it always work? [Speaker 1] No, it doesn't always work. He'll say, okay, I'll go out and get a pizza. The waitress is also very cute. [Speaker 2] So, sometimes this method doesn't work. But the four steps, it always works. [Speaker 1] You always make money. [Speaker 2] The husband always washes the dishes. [Speaker 1] Okay, so he says here, even if ... [Speaker 2] by the way, to live in a world where the only way to get cooperation for your husband is violence, or blackmail. Okay? To live in this kind of life, we say this is suffering, this is pain. [Speaker 1] To not know if he's going to stay or leave if you talk like that. [Speaker 2] This is suffering. [Speaker 1] And we live in this world where we don't understand about emptiness. We don't understand about the four steps. So we work, work, work, but we don't know if we will succeed. Okay, so you live in a ... the world is like this tent, you know? And everybody in the tent is trying to be happy. And some people are trying violent way, and some people are trying blackmail way to be happy with their husband. But it's all confusion. The whole life, maybe it works, maybe it doesn't work. But if you understand emptiness, shogpo means you tear this pain of life in half. Like, shogpo means Okay? Your old way of making money. Tonight, we tore it a little bit. [Speaker 2] Okay? Then a little bit doubt came in your mind. [Speaker 1] Maybe everybody's making money the wrong way. This guy make quarter billion dollar company with the new method. [Speaker 2] Then that thought in your mind, here, shogpo means it tears your old way of life. [Speaker 1] shogpo chen tarpe sokpa juknopay yin te, and you get, tonight, you got a seed put in your mind, even if you don't want it, you got a seed now. [Speaker 2] You made a big mistake tonight. You came to this talk. [Speaker 1] By accident, now you got a bug. In English, we say you got a bug in your head. Maybe it will take one week. Maybe it will take ten years. But the rest of your life, you're going to think, maybe that guy was right. That's enough to tear your old life. What's the old life? What's the old business model? [Speaker 2] Try to take from the others. Be fast. Be smart. Be tough. Take what you can take. [Speaker 1] Which country started this? It's called America. [Speaker 2] Let's compete. The whole life is like World Cup. The tough guy is number one. The guy who's not tough, they lose. [Speaker 1] This competition, who's stronger? Which country can take the more resources? [Speaker 2] Okay. This system with Varanisi is the opposite. [Speaker 1] Serve other people. Make other people successful. Plant a seed in your mind. Don't, don't, don't, don't forget to put the water on the seed, please. [Speaker 2] Okay? Before you go, when you go to sleep, when we go to sleep, what do we think about? [Speaker 1] Oh, my husband called me stupid. [Speaker 2] Also, we don't have enough money. [Speaker 1] I think my kid is joining a gang. [Speaker 2] My kid what? [Speaker 1] He's joining a gang. You know, for all of us, just before you go to bed, is the time to worry. [Speaker 2] In this system, you have to change it. Okay? Get in the bed. Your mind starts to think, you know. Oh, my wife said something bad to me. Your mind is like a bad dog. [Speaker 1] It wants to think about bad things, you know. Oh, my wife said something to me. Then you have to be macho. You have to talk to your mind. Oh, my wife said something bad to me. [Speaker 2] Shut up! [Speaker 1] Yeah, but my kid may be joining a gang. I think so. [Speaker 2] Shut up! Yeah, but we don't have enough money. [Speaker 1] Shut up! Think about it in the morning. Everything's better in the morning, you know. Don't think about things at night. Okay? You are tired. That's why you went to bed. Then the mind is tired when you go to bed. Don't decide about your husband, and your job, and your kids at night. Decide in the morning. Breakfast is better. The last thought before you go to sleep must be about something good you did for somebody else today. [Speaker 2] Then the whole night, the seed is being watered. Okay? If you do that for a week, I will make a thousand dollars. [Speaker 1] Okay? And my friends, they know. The money just comes like that. We have a war. Me and the money have a war. I'm trying to get the money out of my bank account. He's trying to go into my bank account. He's winning. Okay? Understand? Cool? All right. So, if you understand that, you broke ... you tore your old life. And you are on your way out of a life of competition. And you are on your way out of a life where you don't know what's going to happen next year. Don't wait and see how next year comes. [Speaker 2] Plant some seeds. [Speaker 1] You can design 2019. Okay? It's under your control now. Don't wait like this. Oh, maybe I'm going to have a bad year. Maybe I'm going to have a good year. [Speaker 2] That's an old way of thinking. [Speaker 1] You just say, oh, I'm going to plant some good seeds, you know? I want to have a good 2019. Oh, yeah, and I'll also make my ... my goal is in 2019, my husband also washes the dishes and cooking by June. Don't sit there and wait and see what might happen next year. [Speaker 2] Design it. Plant the seeds. [Speaker 1] And then it ... [Speaker 2] you know, those of us who are doing it, it's super cool. Okay? Things just come, you know? Don't ... don't go crazy like this old system. [Speaker 1] Okay? [Speaker 2] Don't go crazy with this obsolete system. [Speaker 1] SON NAMS CHUNG NGOS CHUN DI LA THET TZAM SA BA YANG MI RGYUR. We have nine more minutes. Okay? So, just relax. SON NAMS CHUNG NGOS CHUN DI LA THET TZAM SA BA YANG MI RGYUR. THET TZAM GSOD PA TZAM GYIS KYANG SRID PAR ZHUGS PAR BYED PAR RGYUR. We just finished the first day's class. Okay? [Speaker 2] Yesterday's class we just finished. Okay? [Speaker 1] And this is a quotation from ... yeah, Nagarjuna's student Aryadeva. Okay? [Speaker 2] And he says, people who came to this class without any good karma, they won't have enough karma even to doubt what I'm saying. Their mind is already in the refrigerator at home. [Speaker 1] Veronica, what kind of snack we having after the class? [Speaker 2] This is ... okay? [Speaker 1] If you came into this class with no good karma, you are thinking about, oh, what's for dinner? [Speaker 2] You know? [Speaker 1] If you came into this class with good karma, you are like this, you're like ... damn, what if that guy's right, you know? You know, I could be really, I could buy that house I want to buy, you know? [Speaker 2] Okay, maybe, if you think maybe, shripa hrupa chepa gyur, you tear, you tear your old life apart, okay? [Speaker 1] Okay, it's a tradition in Buddhism that you never stop at the end. [Speaker 2] You always do a little bit more from the next class, okay? Which is what we're supposed to be doing tonight anyway. [Speaker 1] So, we're going to go to the, just five minutes of the class for tomorrow, okay? Okay, I'm on the second reading, if you guys have the reading. Okay, leng shi dang ngo kyi dun. Leng shi means, so, how did Buddha teach this sutra? What we know, what, how old was he? Where was he? Who was sitting there? [Speaker 2] What was going on? [Speaker 1] DANG PO LA THU MONG DANG, THU MONG MA YIN PAS, LENG SHI GNYIS YOD PA'I DANG PO LA ZHIG STE, DUS DANG BRTZON PA DANG NAS DANG, KHOR PHUN TSUM TSOGS PA'I ZHIG PO'O. It's four parts to setting the scene, like, where did the Buddha teach this sutra? Where, where was he? Who was with him? You know, who is he? And, and you know, what time was it? What year was it? [Speaker 2] Okay? [Speaker 1] Then, then we start the actual sutra. EVAM MAYA SHUTAM. Say EVAM? [Speaker 2] EVAM MAYA SHUTAM. [Speaker 1] We are lucky because we have the original Sanskrit of the Heart Sutra. So, I put it in your book. [Speaker 2] It's in your book. [Speaker 1] EVAM MAYA SHUTAM means, in Sanskrit it means, I heard this teaching. So, in Buddhist time, there was no paper. So, the students, they try to listen very carefully. Then they go home. [Speaker 2] They climb a palm tree. [Speaker 1] They peel off the palm leaf. They get a needle. [Speaker 2] They scratch the letter in the palm leaf. [Speaker 1] Then they take charcoal, and they rub it in where they made the scratch with the needle. So, all the records of what the Buddha taught were made at home by those guys, by the students, scratching palm leaves very slowly. And there's a tradition that at the beginning of the sutra, you say, I heard this one. [Speaker 2] This is what I heard. [Speaker 1] If you read the Synoptic Gospels, Luke, Matthew, and Mark. Not John. John is not considered the Synoptic. The three are supposed to be telling the same story. It's amazing, you know, what they heard different. ILA'I LAMA SABBAG THA' NI. Yeah, oh God, why you forsake me? Why you leave me here? That's ... I forget who it is, Mark or something. Matthew, I give my soul to you. EVA MA'I ASHRU TAM. This is what I heard. [Speaker 2] Each student hears a different thing. [Speaker 1] In Christianity and Buddhism, same, okay? If you go ... guys go home and scratch this teaching tonight in a palm leaf, I think there's going to be about 150 different sutras. Of course, this is life. Everyone hears something different, okay? DUS PHRIN TSUL SOGS PA NI ... five more minutes, okay? Two more minutes. DUS PHRIN TSUL SOGS PA NI, SDIG PA'I BDAG GIS THOS PA'I DU BYED NA BSHAD PA'I BRTEN TE What does it mean, I heard this one time? SDIG PA'I BCAS PA NI, CHEN GYUR GYI RDOG BSKYED BCAS PA YIN LA This means Heart Sutra. [Speaker 2] I heard this, right? [Speaker 1] BDAG GIS THOS PA'I BSHAD PA NI, GZHAN LAS RGYUR NAS MA YIN GYIS Then I heard it means, I'm not reporting what someone else told me. I was there. I was there in the tent. The night Verenisa got the hundred dollars, I was there. EVA MA YA ZHUGS DAM, I heard it. DUS GCIG NA BSHAD PA NI, then why does he say, you know, I heard it once, once upon a time? We say EVA means once upon a time. [Speaker 2] It has two meanings, okay? [Speaker 1] Those of you who are studying Buddhism, every sutra starts the same way. EVA MA YA ZHUGS DAM. This is what I heard one time. [Speaker 2] Then one time has two meanings. [Speaker 1] It can mean one time in my life, I was there, I heard it. EVAM, right? In Sanskrit, EVAM means I was there once upon a time, I heard it. [Speaker 2] But it has another meaning. [Speaker 1] Mr. Human Dictionary, Mr. Nick, you want to take a shot? Do you remember? [Speaker 2] Where are you? [Speaker 1] This is a traditional explanation. [Speaker 2] It means, you are ... [Speaker 1] I almost used a bad word, but my boss is here. You are extremely lucky if you heard it once. [Speaker 2] Okay? To be there when Jesus gave a teaching, right? You must have some unbelievable good karma, you know? [Speaker 1] To be there when the Buddha gives a teaching, you must have unbelievable good karma. So, when he says EVAM, once I heard this, it means, and I was really lucky, you know? I was lucky to be there once. Okay, cool. Last thing, okay? YANG DU ... someone called me Senor Ultima Cosa. Usually I have five or six Ultima Cosas. YANG DU ... but tonight, just one, okay? YANG DU GCIG GI TSE LEN GCIG THOS PA'I TZAM GYIS GSUNG BAR LTON PA'I SHES RAB CHE BAR BSTAN TO. It means, in those days, the tradition was for the student to memorize the whole talk while it's being given. So, we have to memorize it in the monastery. [Speaker 2] The human mind has the power to memorize it. [Speaker 1] If you meditate, you can memorize a teaching while it's being given. Then you run home, okay? Don't even go to the toilet. Climb up a palm tree. Pull it down. Scratch it fast. So, one of the reasons why the sutra starts with EVAM MAYA SHUKTAM, I heard this, it's to indicate the quality of the student. [Speaker 2] In the old days, they didn't have internet. They didn't have iPhone. They didn't have YouTube. They had a thing called mind, and they recorded much better, okay? [Speaker 1] Because they use it all the time, and you can learn to memorize, okay? So, when the sutra starts, I heard this one time, it means anyone who has the karma to be in the room when someone's explaining the Heart Sutra, is an extraordinary person. So, even if you just come tonight, it's a sign you have extraordinary good karma. [Speaker 2] You are not a normal person. [Speaker 1] Cool. All right. Susana, you ready? Bertha, you did before? No. Okay, Susana, Susana. [Speaker 2] SANGYE SHINDU MIKTAY UWAR GYI DROKHU NANDAK SHINA DROBHAR SHOK YIDAM GURU RANG NAMADANA GAMMEY YATAYAMI DIGYOKU SANAM YESHE TSOR SOGSYI SANAM YESHE LAS CHUNG BA'I DANG PA KUN YI DROBHAR SHOK Okay, cool. [Speaker 1] Thank you for coming, and thank you for this beautiful city, Guadalajara. [Speaker 2] This beautiful what? City. Gracias por esta hermosa ciudad, Guadalajara.
