[Speaker 1] We're going to do a tab gyu. What's a tab gyu? We're going to do a horse race. We didn't do much lam rim. [Speaker 2] Okay. [Speaker 1] We're just going to go pretty straight, okay? ,DE MIN KYAM ROL NAM DANG MI DGONG STE, If you don't have the two causes for taking refuge, you won't do it very well, okay? What's the two causes? Yeah, you're scared of the lower realms, and life in general. And yeah, you think someone can help you, like mom, meaning Buddha. ,SDUG BSNGAL LA JIG ZHING BRTAG PA MED NA, ,SKYABS SU DUS KYI BLO MI SKYES, If you don't think you're going to have some suffering, you won't want to look for someone to help, okay? You don't think about it. ,SKYES BU YI LA YI ZHING MED NA, ,SKYABS SU SKYE DANG RGYUD MI BSTAN PA'AM, And if you don't believe that Buddha and the Three Jewels can help you, then you won't go to them. ,DRAN KYANG TSIG SANGS LAS SNYING NAS, ,BLO RGYAL BA MI DONG, Then there's people who recite this prayer every day, right? ,SANGS RGYAS CHOS DANG, ,TSAL GYIS BYANG NA MA, We should do it, right? [Speaker 2] ,DUG GIS GYI CHOS GYI MED TOG DRAM, ,RI LA GYI CHI MIN PA'I DGE BRBAG GIS, ,SANGS RGYAS CHOS DUNG NYID DE DGOS BAR GYI, ,DROG KUN MI DANG, DRAKI CHUNG YEN DINPEI SONG NAM KYI DRODHA VENCHE SANGYE DRODHA BADSHOK SHODAN SONG KYI SONG NAM LA DRAM CHUG PAR DU DRAM NI DRAM SU CHING DRAKI CHUNG YEN DINPEI SONG NAM KYI DRODHA VENCHE SANGYE DRODHA BADSHOK By the way, I'm sorry I'm a little bit late. [Speaker 1] We had a board meeting, mainly to talk about putting internet in the valley, retreat cabins. So we're going to put it there for emergencies. And you're not supposed to use it. And thank you for that. That's why we can pay for it. So Michael has a whole system designed already. Thank you for that. DE YANG RANG NYID NGAN SONG LA JIG PA DANG KHOR BA LA JIG PA DANG GZHAN KHOR BA NA RANG LA MI GSOS PA'I GNYIS RTZE BA GSUM RIM BZHIN GYIS BU CHUNG DI'I CHEN PO SO SROG KHYAB DUR RGYUD YIN So there are three levels of taking refuge. First one, yourself, you don't want to go to lower realms by yourself. Second one, you don't want to be in the whole cycle of pain in general anymore, even as a human. And third level, I can't stand how other people are suffering. I need to do something to help everybody get out. So in the Lam Rim teachings, those are called lesser capacity, medium capacity, and higher capacity. Those three motivations. I want to stay out of the three lower realms. I want to stay out of the cycle in general. And I can't bear to see other people suffer. Those are the three levels. DE NA GONG DUNG NGAN SONG GI SDUG BSNGAL LO RIG PA SKYE PA DE So we've reached a place in our Lam Rim study where we are just at the first motivation. We're trying to keep ourselves... We don't want to be a dog or go to a hell realm or something like that. Again, I'll repeat that these three levels of this teaching over the next, you know, eight years, we don't reject the lower level when we go to the higher level. It's like a house, three-story house. We build the first story, then we build the second story, then we build the third story. You can't want to help other people if you think this life is okay. And if you think that, then you won't worry about the three lower realms. Or you won't want to. Thinking that this life is okay is a problem of not understanding this life. So each of those three motivations builds on each other. NYID PA YOD GANG LA RGABS SU SGRO BA LA NYID RGABS YOD NGOS GSUNG BA'I DNGOS DANG DE RGABS SU DGOS PA'I RGYUD ZIN NO So now we're going to talk about who can protect us. I've been in countries where... I don't know. I've visited many, many countries in my life and some of them have no law. You see? Like, I was in Thailand, okay? And I was just driving. I hired a driver to take me someplace. And then we got stopped by a policeman. And I asked the driver, did you do something wrong? He said, no, they just stopped you. And I said, okay. So the policeman said, show me your license. And the guy said, I don't have one. And I'm like, you're a professional driver and you don't have a license? He said, no, I don't have a license. And then he walked away with the guy and he paid him some money. Then he came back and he said, let's go. This is just normal. This happens here. Then I said, aren't you going to call the police? He says, that is the police. Then I said, next time can you bring your license? He says, my license is right here. If you show the license, they take it to the police station, you'd have to pay twice as much. There's nothing you can do. There's nobody to tell. If you tell somebody, the guy will take more money. There's no protection. There's no refuge. It's all corrupt. You have to find someone who can help you when there's trouble. And there's nothing in this world. This whole world is like that. There's nobody can help you, really. Those rich people, they just pay more to have their last operation. It doesn't save them. We need someone who can really protect us. If they can't protect me after I die, I'm not interested. Someone says, I can protect you, but only until you die. Then I say, you find somebody else to protect. I need someone who can protect me even after I die. Like that. I want the real thing. I want a real insurance company. Dharma Insurance Company. We're going to talk about who can help you. Then we're going to talk about why it's a good insurance company. Here we go. DANG PO NI LTOS PA RGYA RNGABS CHUG PA LAS He quotes a famous lines of praise from the Tengyur. Peter means father. Yeah, it was Jupiter. So, it was because his first name was Jupiter. Like Peter the Great back then. And these different names, different generations, different times, different names. All the same. Didn't help anybody. Jupiter. Thank you, Jupiter. DED DAG GOR RANG YANG GOR BA YIN PAS If they even exist, they exist in the cycle of pain. Those supposed guys going to help you, they're also in pain. Most of them don't exist. Yeah, exist, exist. If you have faith, if you have faith, then you plant a good seed. Then there will be someone good to take care of you. It's okay. You don't have to try to fight with your Christian friends or Muslim friends. Let them alone. Probably they're doing okay. They are doing good deeds and they are creating good seeds, and therefore they will get some help. What you call the help doesn't matter. It's coming out of their seeds. So don't fight with them. Maybe that's good for them. RGYEN PAS DE GONG CHO GSUM KHO NA YIN LA DE GSUM YANG LAS PO NGOS MA SRED NA, KHYAM DOR RNAMS DANG MI SBYUNG If you don't know who is the three jewels, you cannot ask them for help. RANG CAG GIS MA BDAG MA BYAS PA NA This is one of the most famous lines in all Middle Way philosophy. All Buddhist philosophy, this is one of the most famous lines. He's making a joke. He's using a very famous line from Middle Way philosophy. It's called MA BDAG MA BYAS. Say MA BDAG MA BYAS NA. MA BDAG MA BYAS NA MA BDAG MA BYAS NA is if you don't look under the surface, then everything works okay. If you don't go too deep, everything's okay. You put gas in your car and you go to Tucson, and it looks like the gas makes the engine run. But does it really? It doesn't. The only thing that makes gas run a car is that you gave rides to people in the past. If those seats finish, the same gasoline will not run your car. Got it? Does gasoline work? MA BDAG MA BYAS NA If you don't worry about it, it's okay, use it. MA BDAG MA BYAS NA But here he's talking about three jewels. MA BDAG MA BYAS NA THEG CHEN GYI RIGS BRDZIN PA LTA BU YIN DO DO BYAS KYANG, NA TZA SOGS DRA MA'I DRIG DROD CHUNG BA CHA BAR GAL CHEN LA THUG PA'I TSAD GYIS BSTAN PA'I GCOD KYANG DANG GAL TSEN If you don't ask too many questions, THEG CHEN GYI RIGS BRDZIN PA We are supposed to be like very big Mahayana Buddhists, right? Somebody told me, I heard somebody said, Geshe-la gave us a tantric initiation this week. I didn't. You heard a little bit. You heard a little bit. Now you have taste, so you have to work hard to get initiation. We are supposed to be very serious Buddhist people. YIN DO DO BYAS KYANG We pretend that we are very serious. But... But... How do you say but in Chinese? DAG ZHIG DAG ZHIG But if you get a problem, what do you do? You run to the police. You run to the doctors. You run... You are supposed to be Buddhist. What's the meaning of Buddhist? Goes to three jewels for help. But when you get sick or someone cheat you, you run to the police. You don't say, this is coming from me, I have to do four powers. Or I want to raise that word, I should help someone else to get a raise. Nobody thinks like that. I don't think like that. But that's what we should do. That's three jewels. That's the real three jewels. But we don't use it. There's a few people in all the world, I meet 20,000 people every year. There's like three who are really using it, like Laura. Where is she? She's like, Geshe-la just... She just made 20 million bucks, doing this four steps thing. Geshe-la, just use the four steps to Diamond Mountain. I'm like, what four steps? Okay, you have to teach me. So, when we have some little problem, we don't try to fix it with seeds. We try to fix it with a doctor, we try to fix it with a policeman. Is it wrong to go to the doctor? No. First go visit your sick friend. Make good seeds. Then go to the doctor. Then the doctor will work. If you don't make good seeds and you go to the doctor, sometimes they kill you. Many people died from the doctor. Many people broke their neck in the yoga class. Because they didn't have good seeds. Make good seeds first, then do yoga. I... You la la suck, Geshe-la. This guy in Romania said, Geshe-la, I don't think you should keep doing yoga if you hate it. I said, I don't really hate it. I just hate all the yoga teachers. You la suck la. The two worst are right here. Israel and Singapore. Don't go in their class. Just kidding. I love them. One day Kili was... Who was killing us? Somebody was killing us in the class. Oh, Orit was killing us in the DCI teacher class. And Jenny Wang starts to go, Orit, I love you. [Speaker 2] I love you. I love you. [Speaker 1] I don't know why she said that. You la suck la gyab chu ne sang shing chu mo gang kyel In Tibet, there's an old religion. And they believe there are many spirits. And if you go cut juniper tree, we have a lot of juniper tree here. And where I live, there's 10,000 juniper trees. And I'm allergic to them. Anyway, right Connie? But they cut the juniper tree. They make some incense from the juniper tree. And then they make some smoke. And they go, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. gang kyel, la ten ku kar kang yu kyi tsar gyuk dro ni And they run off to some little shrine and they offer all this juniper. nang na kway jok la long ma kel war It means, on the inside, they don't trust the three jewels. They're doing some strange rituals or something. If you get sick, help sick people. [Speaker 2] Easy. [Speaker 1] Then go to any doctor. It will cure you. If you want money, give away a lot of money. Buy a newspaper. Open to the stocks page. Take a pen, close your eyes, drop it. Buy that stock. You will make money. Really. Easy. de le gyel su sol hlakpa jinpe nang dak chung ngunpa te You can tell from the outside, by watching these people, that inside, they don't really know what the three jewels is. The minute they say, I'm a Buddhist. Are you a Buddhist? Yes, I'm a Buddhist. What's a Buddhist? Believes three jewels. Okay, what's this juniper you're burning? Oh, I'm sick. So from the outside, you can understand. Inside, they don't understand. hlakpa jinpe nang dak chung ngunpa te den du gunpay jik su gyur kyang, thek chen rin dzin ta shok, nangpa sanggye pay jik la mey pa yin Then he said something cool, which was why he was very controversial in his term. And he was criticized by many people. He says, all you guys think you're big Tantricas, and you think you're big Mahayana people, but I'll tell you something, in our monastery, there's not a lot of Buddhists. Sarah had 10,000 monks. He says, in our monastery, there's not a lot of Buddhists. Why? Buddhist means when you have a problem, you use the three jewels, which means you plant seeds. Okay, that's all. You understand where things are coming from. So instead of talking to the police, or instead of finding the best doctor, you help some sick people. Oh, I hurt myself in yoga. I have to help some sick people. Oh, I don't have money. I have to help some poor people. Oh, I have a problem with my husband. Then you have to help other people who have a problem with their husband. Okay, that's all. End of story. In English we say end of story. Then I have to retire. There's nothing else to teach. ,GZHAN YANG LOD DANG RGYAL TSE SOGS LA, ,KHYEN TZE NUS SUM KYI YON DANG MED CING, Okay, those of you who studied DCI level 8, which we did for the first time in Germany, thank you Germans, because they're the first DCI people. That DCI level is about leadership. In Buddhism, a leader should have three qualities. ,TSE KHYEN, ,TSE TSE NUS ,KHYEN TSE TSE NUS ,KHYEN means they know what you need. That's a real leader. They know what you need. ,KHYEN PA They understand. They know what to do. But sometimes people know what to do, but they don't care. Do you know how to help this guy in your company? Yes. Are you going to do it? No, I'm going to play golf. Okay. ,KHYEN TZE So, no TSE BA. TSE BA means no love. They don't have love. They understand what's the problem or how to fix it, but they don't care. So, a leader or a jewel, one of the three jewels, has to know what to do, and then they have to care how to help you. I want to help you. ,DIN NUS PA NUS PA means what? Do you guys remember from Lam Rim? Yeah, they got to have strength, power. Do you know what to do? Yes. Do you love me? Yes. Can you do it? Nope. Got it? I don't have that kind of power. I'm sorry. Okay. So, if you have protection, they should have those three. They should know what to do, they should care about you, and they should have the power to do something. ,GSUNG GI YIN DANG MED But all of these little spirits, beings, and stuff like that, people in Tibet believe in the Nagas, like dragons or something. They don't have KHYEN, they don't have TSE, they don't have NUS. They don't know what to do, they don't care about you, and they have no power. ,KHUR RANG RNAMS CI TZAM YANG MI SHES Even that spirit doesn't know when they're going to die. They don't know. ,PHAL CHEN DON DANG YID BDAG GIS RIGS SU RTOGS PA YIN PAS Most of those spirits actually belong to animal realm and the preta realm. RIGS SU RTOGS PA YIN PAS ,RANG RES LAS BSTAN MA So they are lower than you are already. Are there spirits in the world? Yes. Can they make trouble for you? Yes. Should you ask them for help? No, be careful. They're like crazy. ,RANG RES JI LTAR THAB GZHAN GYANG MI YIN PAS ,DE'I GZHAN GYANG MI YIN PAS ,DE'I DE LA RGYAL BCUG ,RANG RES THAB GZHAN GYANG MI YIN PAS ,DE'I DE LA RGYAL BCUG You're not so capable person yourself. But you are a human. So why go to these spirits for help who are animals and pretas? They're actually animals and pretas. These are like local little spirits. ,KHUR BA DANG NGAN SONG GI ,SDUG BSNGAL LA RGYAL PA LTA CI They can't help you get out of the three lower realms. They can't help you get out of suffering. ,LTA CI ,SKYER MED KYI BDUN CHUNG NA LA'ANG ,PHEN PA LAS GNOD TZAB BYAS Even when they try to help you, they end up hurting you. Those spirits, local spirits, little spirits. Then he tells a funny story. So here we go. This is a story of a guy who tried to get the help of a spirit and something went wrong. ,SPER NA NGAR MI BABA YOD PA ZHIG GZHAG ROL DRAG TSEN ,GNAS PA'I SAR SONG BA DRAG TSEN ,DE MI MIN GZHAN LA ZHAG LTAR ,KHYER BA BPA PA'I ,MI DE BABA KHYER TE So the local spirits were having a meeting like a sechu. Not and they need everybody is supposed to bring some refreshments. Then they told one spirit don't forget we're going to have a spirit party like in Guadalajara at Harbin Minnet. You remember? I remember. So we're going to have a party. Can you bring some you know, you bring some hot dogs or something. Hamburger. Then the spirit said, okay, I'll get it. Then one guy was sick with a goiter and the spirit ran into this guy. He's like, he doesn't need the goiter. I need a hamburger. So he pulled the goiter off the guy's neck. ,MI DE BABA KHYER TE ,MED PA BYED Then the guy was so happy. I don't have goiter anymore. ,YANG MI BABA BYED SHES ZHIG GIS ,DE TSOR NAS BYED DU SONG DE ,SKYAB SPYOD YANG BABA NGA MA MA SHI BA'I ,RTEN DU BABA LHAG PA BYED SU ,BABA NGA MA MA SHI BA'I ,RTEN DU BABA BAG ZHIG So another guy saw what happened and he went he had also goiter. So he went to the same place because he heard the spirit will take away your goiter. So the bad news is they cancelled the party. So the spirit said, I should take this back and give it back to that guy. So he got a second one. So be careful with those spirits. ,DE BZHIN DU ZHIG BSTAN ,DE LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I ,DE LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I ,DE LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I LHAG PA'I So sometimes those spirits are in a good mood and they will help you do something lucky. And same guy, often they get in a bad mood and they will hurt you. You can't trust them. It's like my friend had a tiger as a pet and one day he bit his hand off. Mostly he's nice, but they are dangerous. The spirits are like that. Sometimes they just get crazy and they do something bad. They are not miluwa. Say miluwa. Miluwa. Miluwa means never give you trouble, always give you help. What's it mean in logic? Miluwa. So, sadhu miluway rikpa. Sadhu miluway rikpa. Yeah, it's the definition of pramana. By Dharmakirti. CI ROL PA'I TZANG BA RGYA BYIN DBANG CHUG DRAG PO SDONG DRUG SOGS LA BSKYAB YOD BYAS PA DE Then there were different kind of protection spirits in India for many years. One is called Brahma. One is called Chakra. One is called Indra. One is called Rudra. One is called Shadanana. That's on the chung trak. They are powerful. They are kind of temporary god. They can move planets and stuff. They're pretty powerful. MED DE DAG KYANG RANG NYID KHO BA DANG NGAN SONG NAS MA GRUB But they also are suffering. They are not free from samsara. They are in samsara. They will die. They will suffer. There are beings who are very big, very powerful, like Obama. But they also get sick. They also die. They cannot help themselves. You don't go to someone for help if they cannot help themselves. NAS MA GRUB BA'I GZHAN GAL PA MI NUS They can't help other people. RNAM PA SANGS RGYAS PA'I STON PA DE NI PA NI DE DAG LDAN MI BRAL BAR But Buddha is not like that. SNGAGS DGOS SNGAGS LTOS PA LAS There's a famous poem by someone named Matichitra. It's called MI SHES PA'I GROG What's that mean? It means you have a friend and you don't know you have them. You have a friend and you don't know you have them. It's fun. We used to go to dinner. Diamond Mountain students, we used to go to dinner in a big expensive restaurant. We have a game. We play a game. We always pay for somebody's dinner that we don't know. We tell the waitress, I'm paying for that table, but don't tell them. We just pretend that we are not that person. We are eating and then the waiter is talking to them and blah, blah, blah, blah. And they go. And the waiter is like... And they are like, I don't know. I'm not supposed to tell you. Then they look at every person in the restaurant. It's called a friend that you don't know about. It's a Buddhist concept. Buddha is your friend all these years, but you didn't know. He's been paying your bills at the restaurant for many years, but you didn't know. It's possible, right? There's people like that. I like to do that. I go pay my friend's electric bill for a year, something like that. ,GZHAN NYID SEMS CAN KUN GYI DGON, ,CI'I RTZA LA'ANG SEMS PA LA'ANG, You are the rich uncle that nobody knows they have. ,'OG NAS YIN TE SO SOGS KRABS SU BYAS GYUR, ,LTAR KHYEN TSE NUS PA, ,PHUN TSUM SOGS PA DANG LDAN PA YIN, I'm going to tell you more later on about the qualities they have. But let's start with, they know what's the problem. They love you. They have the power. You guys okay? I know it's late. I'm more tired than you. Since John Brady left, I'm the oldest person here. Except for somebody. Okay, don't be tired. Tomorrow night you say, ,'Oh, I want some more Lam Rim.' ,RGYAL TZIN SOGS LA, ,DAN DAG PA YON DANG GI, ,GA CHOG TZAM YANG MED PA MA ZAD, Governments don't have the power. They don't know what to do. If you took all the power of all the governments in this world and you combined it, it wouldn't equal the power of one non-Bodhisattva. Non-Bodhisattva who understood emptiness. You can't compare. Is a non-Bodhisattva who sees emptiness directly the Sangha jewel or not? We couldn't decide. They asked me and I was a little... I couldn't give them a good answer. Generally those eight qualities are really wrapped up with Bodhisattvas. But you don't have to be a Bodhisattva to see emptiness directly. Probably I think they are Sangha jewel. ,DE NA SANGS RGYAS NI, ,BRAL NYID THAR CHEN PO'I KHYAB NAS THAR THUG, Does this sound familiar? He says, you want to know what's the Buddha jewel? It's the ultimate protection which has, what did we say? Fulfilled both needs. He quotes the definition because he was a Geshe. He's from my same house in the monastery. He's from our house called Gerong. We are Gerong. You are Gerong. There are 12 houses in Serame. The best one in the best monastery is called Gerong. Luckily you are from Gerong. If you want to know who else is from Gerong, it's Pabongka. The person who wrote the best book in Buddhism, I think, is from your house. ,GYUN GUS TSE YIN DANG, ,DEN PA'I DE'I, He's our teacher. He has all good qualities and he got rid of all his problems. ,KHO LA LA, ,KHO LA LA means, I'll make it easy for you. I'll make it easy for you. ,KHO BA means understand. ,LA BA means easy. I'll make it easy for you. He's going to teach the four bodies in one sentence. He's teaching all these people in Tibet. They are just like farmers. He's like, I'll try to make it easy for you. Here you go. ,GCOD DGOS NYID DON DANG PAS SANGS RGYAS KUN BYUNG, The real Buddha jewel is the two Dharma bodies. The two parts of the Dharma body. What are they? Wisdom body, which is the wisdom of a Buddha. And the essence body, which is mostly emptiness, of the rest of the Buddha. He says, I'm just going to make it easy for you. One sentence. The two parts of the Dharma body, that's the real Buddha jewel. So we're connecting what you learned today. Got it? That's why we did it. ,GCOD DGOS NYID DON DANG PAS SANGS RGYAS KUN BYUNG, And the two physical bodies are the not really Buddha jewel. [Speaker 2] Are they Buddha? [Speaker 1] Yeah, but they're not Buddha jewel. They're not ultimate protection. That's very interesting, right? Buddha with all the signs. Buddha come to this planet. They are not ultimate protection. Only the understanding seeds is ultimate protection. Those physical statues, very beautiful. I'm in love with her already. She's going to come home with me. I hope V doesn't get jealous. But they can't protect you. They can't really protect you. It's to understand the seeds will protect you. Understand the pen will protect you. That's all. You can burn incense and ask them for help, and it doesn't help. It won't help you. Just understand what you want you have to give to somebody else first. That's all. That's Buddha. Cool? Sorry, that's Buddha jewel. And the jewel is the one... Buddha is not the same as Buddha jewel, right? There are parts of Buddha that are sweet, they look nice, they are happy, but they can't help you. Directly, ultimately. There are two parts of Buddha that can help you directly. Understand emptiness and emptiness. Nice? Then that's what DCI does all year. We just teach people about seeds. That's two parts of the Dharmakaya. [Speaker 2] Cool? Cool trick? [Speaker 1] It's a business seminar. All right. Thank you. Go ahead. CHOS KUN BYONG LA DON DANG PA'I CHOS KUN BYONG NI Now let's talk about Dharma jewel, he says. DON DANG PA'I CHOS KUN BYONG NI The ultimate Dharma jewel, SGOGS LAM GANG RANG GI SDUG PA'I PHAG PA'I THUG RGYUL GYI RNAMS SBYANG LDAN PAR Either one of the truths, of the four Arya truths, which is on the good guy side of the four Arya truths, any person who saw emptiness directly, their perception of emptiness directly is the real Dharma jewel. That's Dharma. Even ACIP is not saving Dharma. For 30 years we are not saving Dharma. That's not Dharma. This computer is not Dharma. Dharma is the mind which understands the pen. That's Dharma. That's Dharma jewel. That's the real Dharma. Got it? This is the real Dharma jewel out of DCI training. The real Dharma jewel. It's the only thing that's... I mean, people begged me. When I went to Singapore, some guy came up to me and said, Geshe-la, welcome back. You came for five, six years now. I said, yeah, thanks. He said, can you not teach the pen today? Can you teach something new? I'm like, get out of here. That's real Dharma jewel. Understand the pen can protect you. Why? Let's say this is the old DCI example. You worked all day, you took the kids to school, right? Let's go back further. Last week, me and Peter liked to do this one together. Me and Peter and Stanley. Mr. Phantom. Sometimes Alison does it. You're the wife in the family. You have two kids. You work very hard. Your boss tells you you have to come in early tomorrow for a meeting. So you go to your kids' room. Tomorrow mommy has to go early to school. Please be ready to get up early and go to school. Yes, mommy. Then you come in the bedroom next morning, six o'clock. They're jumping on the bed. Where's your school books? I don't know, mommy. Where's your shoes? I don't know, mommy. Why aren't you dressed? I don't know, mommy. Then you're like, you are the two stupidest kids in Xiamen, or wherever you are. One week later, you know the story. You are out. You spend all day at work. Then you have to go buy all the groceries. This is the new system invented by all the men in the world. We had a meeting from every country. We said, okay, for 50,000 years, man has to make the money and the woman has to cook. Let's make a new system. Woman has to make the money and cook. The man watched soccer on TV. Then we had a vote. It passed. Now there's a new system in the world. Like in China and in America, the woman makes all the money, she does all the work, and she has to cook, and she has to take care of the children. What else? Go to the store. You are coming home, but you think, at least my husband will give me a big hug. Really, a husband is only good for two or three things. The best one is hugs. At least when I get home, he will hug me. Then you come home, you open the door, and you are like this. He's like, where's the dinner? Where's the food? Why are you late? I was working. I was buying the groceries. You are the stupidest wife in Xiamen. Now, take refuge. Take refuge. To who? Dharma jewel. What's a Dharma jewel? Understand gongshin. Understand pen. You should always have a pen with you. When your husband yells at you, you should go, Oh, you are the same as a pen. What do you mean I am the same as a pen? I mean, looks like you are coming this way, but I know you are coming this way. What does that mean? Stop saying stupid Buddhist stuff. Be like, wait. You are coming from me. He says, I don't care. You are so stupid. Then you are like, I must have planted a bad seed last week. What did I do? He's like, talk to me. You are like, wait, wait. I got to remember. This is how you insult somebody at Diamond Mountain. Somebody says, you didn't clean out the kitchen. You didn't clean out the kitchen. Then you are like, It means, what did I do so bad last week that you are here? Oh, I yelled at the kids. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Put the seed in my mind. Oh, somebody gave me something. Where was that? Romania? Somebody gave me a diamond shaped thing like this. He said, open it. I open it. It's just some clay. He said, push it. I push it. It makes a very nice mental seed. He makes them. He sells them to his friends. You open it up and you can push it. It will go like, I said, that's so cool. I finally threw it away yesterday. Okay, now question. You look at your husband. You are like, You are coming from me. Yeah, don't stop talking stupid stuff. Then you are like, I don't want to see you again like this. I think I will not yell at my kids anymore. Also, I will not yell at you. If he is smart, he will say, does that mean you understand I am not a stupid guy? Then if you want to be honest, you can say, well, actually, I know you are a stupid guy. But if I tell you that, I make a bad seed. Then I have to see you again next week. So she doesn't say, she doesn't say, no, I am not stupid, you are stupid. What happened? Protection. She just took refuge. It's not this, oh, Buddha, Garuda, Vajrava, Vajrava. Forget it. It doesn't help you. She just took refuge and she just became a Buddhist. I don't care if she is Muslim or Christian. It doesn't matter. She doesn't even know she just became a Buddhist. 20,000 people last year. Okay? Do I care? Do I care what church they go to? I don't care. This is your parents. If your parents went to church, go to church. You will be happy. If you are Muslim, go to the mosque. If you are Jewish, go to the synagogue. This is cultural. This is a cultural thing. What your mom and dad did, you do the same thing. It will make them happy. My friend from Ireland, he is like, Geshe-la, I am going to be a Buddhist now. I said, what do you think as a Buddhist? He said, you know, all these things, Buddhist things. I am going to be a Buddhist now. I decided. I said, you have a daughter, right? Yes, she is very beautiful. How old is she? 21 years old. I said, when she gets married, you are going to go to one of these nice, big Irish Christian church, 1,000 years old, or you are going to go to your basement and there is a picture of a guy with 12 arms, and you are going to marry your daughter there. Which one are you going to do? He is like, I have to be honest, Geshe-la, I think we will go for the church. That is a cultural thing. What your parents do, do the same thing. That is okay. It makes everybody happy. But if you don't yell at your husband back, because you understand he is coming from what you did, because you don't want him to yell at you again next week, you took refuge, and you are a Buddhist. Got it? You are following the Buddha. Got it? That is the whole thing. We don't have to do the rest of this book. That is real refuge. Don't forget. It protects you. Next week he will give you a hug next week, because you didn't tell him how stupid he was. Understand? Got it? That is Buddhism. It doesn't need red robes and things. This is just... We have to wear business suit. DGONG DANG GANG RUNG Now, how many of the four Arya truths did she do? That is okay. Well, on the good side, how many did she do? [Speaker 2] Two. Three. One. [Speaker 1] She definitely did the path to the end of suffering. She definitely did the path. Path means, in Buddhism, path is not the bad road between here and the retreat camp. That is not path. Path means idea. In Buddhism, path means idea. Did she have path? Yeah, she is like, I am not going to yell at you. Why not? Please yell at me. No. Why not? Because I am mad. You are not going to yell at me because you are mad? Yeah. I don't want to see you again. Like this. So I am not planting new seeds. I am sorry. She did a path. She has got one of the four noble truths, one of the four Arya truths. She has got it. When she decides to protect herself, when she decides not to yell back, she has the truth of the path. My question to you is, does she have the truth of the end of suffering? [Speaker 2] She doesn't. [Speaker 1] Why? Next week stupid husband won't be there. Next week stupid husband won't be there. She has the truth of cessation, truth of the end of suffering. She got it. She has both. I didn't yell back. Okay? No, sorry. I understood he is coming from me. Truth of the path. I didn't yell back. Truth of cessation. Did she go to Buddha Jewel? [Speaker 2] Yeah. Which part? [Speaker 1] I am sorry. Did she go to Dharma Jewel? Which part? Both of them. Yay, you got it. Okay? Understand? All those Buddhist books, now you understand them. There is a joke in Tibet, now you don't need them anymore. They are just for training you, right? Buddha said, when you go from California to China in a small boat, and you reach China, and you get out of the boat, don't carry the boat into China. You don't need it anymore. Okay? You are studying all this stuff. But there will come a day when you don't need it anymore. You just use it. Got it? You don't have to have 200 Buddhist books in your house. Okay? Just use it on your husband. Then you are done with the book. Got it? So she has both kinds of Dharma Jewel, right? Why? SGOG LDAN LAM LDAN She has the two good of the four truths. Why? She has a path because she understands where her husband is coming from. She has the end of pain because she decides not to yoga. Great. [Speaker 2] That's refuge. She took refuge. Got it? She found Dharma Jewel in the kitchen. [Speaker 1] Okay? All right? She found Dharma Jewel in the kitchen. She didn't have to go to temple. Okay? I'm going to stop there because it's perfect. I will go to bed 15 minutes early. Okay? That's it. That's the whole thing. Okay? That's refuge. That's Dharma Jewel. Okay? And I want to see some good debates on Wednesday evening. Okay?
