[Speaker 1] Okay, let's go to the text. Adam, MI YUL NA'ANG? Yeah, good. MI YUL NA'ANG YOD TE So there are also hell on earth around us. NGAR RGYA RGYA DU, in the past there was a person in India, SRED DANG LDAN PA'I PHAL DAN, a younger monk named Sriman, NYIN MAR CHUD DU GRO BA'I SKABS, he was out walking around during the day. GZHAN PA ZHIG BAR NANG DU GZUGS GANG ZANG ZANG PA Then in the sky he saw a person who had been a butcher, and his body was as big as a house. LA MED MAR UR BAR BA, and it was burning in flame. ZHIG TU SKYE BAR ZIG PA, he saw that. DE YOG DE RUG PA'I RIG LTA BUR SKYES TE, and that person's assistant, the butcher, was born as a pile of bones, as big as a mountain, and both of them were suffering in great pain. By the way, I got two news today. One was yesterday. There's a person who came to the class earlier this week and was told by the doctor they have leukemia, blood cancer. And they came to the class and got some blessing in the class. And I think yesterday the doctor said it disappeared. Cool. And then another person wrote me and said their high school friend died yesterday in a car accident. I was thinking it would be nice if they had come to the class. YANG SEMS CAN BYA CHOG CAN, BYE BO BZHIN DU BYE BO RIG PO TZAM YOD NA, YOD PA ZHIG TU SKYES TSUL This is kind of weird. There is a guy who was castrating animals, cutting off their... and he was reborn as testicles as big as a mountain. Maybe some of the boys will try to do that. RANG RES YANG LDAN DAG MYONG BA'I KHYAD LAS MANG PO BSAGS ZIN PAS We've also made this kind of karma. DE'I THAMS CAD BYUNG CHOG CHOG KYI LTA MA ZHAG PA'I TSOD DU YOD SONG Palm shop. Special shop. You go and you take there some jewelry or something, and they will loan you some money, but you have to leave the jewelry. If you can't pay the money back in one week or two weeks, they will keep the jewelry. So, people like you and me, we've been pawning things. We did some bad thing to get something that we want. We hurt other people, like we take other person's partner or something like that, because we want to be happy. But it's like you're pawning something, and one day they will take the thing which you gave. So, it's just temporary. It looks like you got something, but to get it you had to give something, bad karma. And one day they will call in this bad karma, and you can go to a place like this, hell. So, it looks like everything's okay, but the jewelry is already in the shop, and if you don't clean that karma, confess that karma, then they will call it in. Adam, in Tibetan that word is called tama shak. So, tama means collateral. What you give someone when you take a loan. Okay. yang du ten shik gi yang rok gi tsor nang du Then there was a ... du ten means a Mahasiddha, and he went to a lake in an area called Yardok. Yardok is the north side of Tibet. tsang sanak lama senwa Then there's a place in north Tibet called sanak. It must be misspelled. I think it's tanak and it means black horse. So, people ... he was a monk, and people made donations to do prayers for sick people or dead people. And instead of using it for prayers, he kept it. He kept the money. And they also made offerings to put on the altar. Like, must have been churros or donuts, I think. And that lama couldn't help himself and he ate them. So, he was born as a fish in this lake. Very large fish. And like, there's this Loch Ness monster. Loch Ness monster. Supposed to be a very big monster living in a lake in Scotland or something. So, he was born like that. And his body took up almost half the lake. And then there were these special fish were born at the same time. And they would eat off his body. And those small fish were his students who also ate the offerings. Then the mahasiddha who saw this fish, he was also traveling with his students. And he said, kor ma sa. kor ma sa means, be careful not to eat offerings. You can eat them after they're offered, that's okay. But be careful. So, Adam, there's a word there we should talk about. kor, say kor. So, tau ka narukorakor. So, generally those kor words mean circle. korwa means samsara. gormo means a coin, round coin. But this kor means offerings made to the sangha. Or for special prayers. nge tu trabe kor ju ma je duk ju ser yang Then there's a saying in the monastery. trabe kor ju ma je duk ju traba means a monk. kor means those offerings. His mic is cutting out. I don't know if you can hear me. It's coming on and off. trabe kor ju means, it's interesting, if a lay person comes and takes a donut off the altar and eats it, they will get very sick. We call, ju means digest, cannot digest. ma ja means peacock. duk means poison. duk means poison. ju means digest. So in Tibet they say that the beautiful color of a peacock feather comes from eating poison. So something which would kill other birds, the peacock can digest it a special way. And it makes them more beautiful. Then that's often used as a metaphor for bodhisattva. They can take problems and digest them and makes them more beautiful. So like most people avoid problems. If somebody you know is having a problem, most people are like, I'll talk to you tomorrow, I'll see you tomorrow. I don't know, like somebody spills a bunch of stuff on the floor. Then you're like, good luck, I hope you get that cleaned up. A bodhisattva will stop and help them clean it up. And it will make them more beautiful. Okay, ma je duk ju ser. So there's an expression in the monastery, monks can digest offerings, peacocks can digest poison. CHOS NYAMS SU BLANG STE GOR SBYU LUGS BSHAD PA ZHIG RTEN RTEN BSHAD PA MA BYUNG NA But you have to know how to eat offerings. And this is now referring to when you become a professional Dharma teacher. And you start taking money from people. You accept money from people. That money is very dangerous. If you are practicing hard, you are meditating hard, and you are really studying like crazy. People in the monastery, when we are in the monastery, we study, I don't know, 18 hours a day, something like that. Study and meditate and debate. So if you are sincere, and if you're working really hard on Dharma things, you're allowed to take money. But it's dangerous. That money is very, the karma of that money is very dangerous. When I was in the monastery, I have to do a lot of accounting. So I was the main accountant for many years. And I hate accounting. I really hate it. They would make me do the accounting for my college. My college is Gyerong University. Gyerong College is the college in Saramay where the original Pabongka Rinpoche studied. Then his assistant was still alive when I was starting there. And he had an abacus for counting numbers. And I had a calculator. And his name was Umtsela. And we would have a competition. We'd say, go! And we'd start. And he'd say, three thousand four hundred, and I'd say, oh man! Then he took care of the new Pabongka. The young one now is the third one. And that's an interesting story. I'll tell you the story. They were going to Bodhgaya in a train. And the young Rinpoche was a ... we call him goofball. He's always goofing off. He didn't study. The third Pabongka, this is the first one, right? And we were all worried about him. And that assistant of the first Pabongka took care of him. But he wouldn't get serious. Then they took a train to Bodhgaya. It takes about 24 hours. They stopped at a station. And the assistant, the old one, he said, Rinpoche, would you like a tea? He said, yeah, I would like a tea. So he got out on the platform to get some tea. And then the train started to go. So he ran after the train, and he tried to jump into the car. But he slipped between the train and the platform, and crushed his chest. Then he crawled back on the train, you know. And he was dying, he was dying. Then for one hour he told the little Rinpoche, now you have to get serious, you know. Look what's going to happen to you. And he gave him beautiful teachings while he was dying. And he died on the train. Then that Rinpoche, we call him Bhakshak Sepa. Bhakshak means Dharma seed. Sepa means a sudden death. Suddenly he woke up. He started to study like crazy. Really good study. I was his examiner. At his Geshe exam. He did really good. Then he became a great lama. You want to know the debate? When you're asked to start a debate, you should ask a question that you're not sure about yourself. Then you can learn something. If you just say something you already understand, you don't learn anything. So I asked him a question which bothered me. The function of a Buddha is to help all suffering beings. But since a Buddha's seeds are perfect, how can they see any suffering beings? Then we debate that for three hours. After the exam we kept going on the porch. So anyway, I hate the accounting in the monastery. One day I complained to my main lama, Geshe Thubten Rinpoche. I think his picture is here, I don't know. One day I complained to my main lama, Geshe Thubten Rinpoche. Then he said, No, no, you shouldn't complain. Guess who was the accountant at Nalanda Monastery? The biggest, most famous monastery in the history of Buddhism. In India, about 1,500 years ago. Sorry, 2,000 years ago. No, 2,000 years ago. Guess who was the accountant? Nagarjuna. Then he said, Nagarjuna. Then I said, oh really? He said, yeah, they only trust Nagarjuna to do the accounts. And I said, wasn't there other honest monks in the monastery? He said, no, no, you don't understand. Sangha's money, Sangha's equipment, very dangerous. Extremely dangerous. If you take something from the Sangha on purpose, you will go to hell for sure. If you make a mistake by accident with Sangha's money, very possible to go to hungry ghosts. So, they only chose an Arya to do the accounting in Nalanda Monastery. Then I felt pretty good. DRA BA YIN PA TZAM GYIS LAS BLA MUR BCU CHOG CHOG MED So don't think just because you are a monk, or a nun, it's safe to, you are protected, you can do the Sangha's accounting, or you can take care of the Sangha's money, and if you make a mistake, you won't have a problem. Don't think like that. And be very careful with sponsors' money. So, if someone donates money for, I don't know, any project, you should use it very carefully. Give them a good account. Because if you don't, you can be born into this kind of hell on earth. DUR BA LUNG LAS The Vinaya says BYA KHONG MED CES BAR BA THAG GSOS PAR GYUR PA CHOG YIN GYIS TSUL KHRIL YANG DAG MI SDONG BAR YUL KHOR GSON YONG SA BA MIN It's better to eat a red hot piece of steel. Then for a person who broke their vows to eat the offerings after the offerings have been offered, like Lama Chupa offering, you are allowed to eat the offerings afterwards. But if you haven't been keeping your vows clean, it will make you very sick, or get cancer or something. So he said it's better to eat a red hot piece of metal. GSON PA LTAR TSUL KHRIMS CHAL BA'I DE'I SOS DE'I SOS PA JAG SGONG BAR BA SA BA BZHIN DANG And then Pabongka Rinpoche said if a person who broke their vows tries to eat those offerings, it will be like eating a red hot piece of metal. TSUL KHRIMS BSTAN PA'I DE'I SES GSOS NA BLO BA DANG PO BA LA GSOS BZHIN GSOS NA SBYU LA But, if you're working hard to do your Dharma practice and you take money or you take food from people properly, it will make you strong. Your practice will get better. MA TSUL NA MI SBYUNG BA'I BU LUN LTA BU YIN But if you take money from sponsors, or food, or airplane tickets, and then you don't work hard, you are creating a karmic debt. And you will have to pay it back later. DE LTAR LAS PA MA BYAS NA SKYE DANG BU LUS SO DA LTAR NGOS NANG DU LUGS LUGS CHOG CHOG YIN PAS Like those red envelopes that Chinese people give to the monks. They hand it to you, and it's so natural for a monk. They go like this. It's like this mudra is very smooth. I saw a similar mudra when you go, when people are shopping, when ladies are shopping, in Kadave? Kadave? In Berlin, big shopping mall. You should watch them. It's kind of fun. We went there for some coffee. There's long racks of clothes, and the ladies are checking. Don't get in their way. So monks are similar. So we are very used to pocketing money. LAS LAM MO'I DI PHYI MA LUS KYI GZHAN NAS But if you don't use it properly, and if you don't work hard with that support that you get, later you will have to pay it back with your flesh. So there's many stories of monks who didn't use the Sangha's equipment or money properly, and they ate it themselves. Used it for their own stuff. Then later they are reborn as a monk. They are reborn as some kind of animal, which other animals are tearing their skin. DE LTAR LAS PA MA BYAS NA LAM MA RNAMS NAS KYANG LAM MA RNAMS NAS KYANG NGO BSTAN CHUNG BAR SPYOR LEN CI THUD TZAM LAS NGO MON SOGS MA BYAS NA So again, in the monastery, the word Lama means reincarnated Lama. So we don't call teacher Lama in the monastery. Lama in the monastery means those big chuku, big reincarnation, rinpoches, who are going to be reborn. So then people give them NGO BSTAN. NGO BSTAN means they give you some money and they say, please do prayer for my mother or my grandmother or something like that. SPYOR LEN CI THUD means then they write a little, what do you call, receipt for the money and they say, thank you very much. But then they get busy and they don't do the prayers. So they take the money for the prayers and they give a little receipt. But they're too busy or they're lazy and they don't do the prayers. PHYI MA KU LUS KYI RTENG NAS BU LON BYO DGOS PAR THAG SPYOD Definitely in the future you will pay for that debt with your flesh. DE BZHIN DU NGA RDOG PHA BONG ZHIG YI NANG DU BEL PA BYED BA GCIG LA CHUNG BA MANG POS SA BA So in Tibet, there are lots of boulders, right? Lots of mountains and rocks. And the word for a boulder in Tibetan is PHA BONG So this lama's name was PHA BONG KHA because his monastery is on top of a big rock. And he had a big connection with China. His previous life was BYANG KYA RIN PO CHE He lived in Beijing and he taught the Chinese emperor. So he had, from his young days, he had a big connection with China. GCIG LA CHUNG BA MANG POS So they broke open a stone and inside was a fossil of a frog. A big frog. And many smaller frogs were eating it. And he said, I believe that was a lama who was taking the sangha's food. YANG BDE GYI LAMA ZHIG GYIS NYES NAS BLA DE RING PHYIR KHYER BA PHYI CHUNG YANG TSOR BSTUN Then there was a lama in a place called DE RGYAS. We call it DE RGYAS. It's in the southeast of Tibet. And it's a famous monastery because they carved the Buddhist scriptures. 300 years ago. And that's carving 300,000 blocks. They carved the kangyur and tengyur. And we got a copy of it when we input for ACIP. So there was a lama from that monastery, DE RGYAS. And he told his students, stand by the river today. Something will flow by. And when you see it, take it. Take it out of the river. So the students waited at the river. And they saw a tree log coming down the river. So they pulled it out. Then he said, split it open. SHAG PA There's the real example of the verb SHAG PA. To confess and to cut open a tree trunk is the same verb. And they found a living frog inside. And many small frogs eating it, eating from its body. Still alive. The lama said, this is a NYER CHEN means, what do you call it? The guy in charge of the food supply. And the lama said, this is the guy in charge of the food supply of the monastery who was eating the monks' food and sharing it with his students without the permission of the sangha. And he was born here. Lama Dorje Changchen Ponyi Vajradhara, Tantric Buddha. Who is that? Vajradhara taught all the secret teachings in this world. So, who is Pabongka Rinpoche talking about? His own lama. So he doesn't call his lama, DAG PO LAMA RIN PO CHE BYAMS PA'I SON DU BRGYA MTSO He doesn't call him by his name. He doesn't say like Geshe Michael or something. He says, the Buddha himself, Tantric Buddha himself, told me, his own lama told him, when he went to East Tibet called Kham, to a place called Doshu, there's a lake named Portso. Dragor Drawe Semchen he found a strange creature inside the lake there. I think it looked like a jellyfish or something. But it was huge. In the summer, you cannot see it because there's lots of water in the lake. And in the winter the water goes down and you can see the back of this animal like a Loch Ness monster. KHAR MTHUN PA CHA SOGS SOGS CHAGS MANG PO And then in the winter when the water goes down many birds and other animals will come and land on the back of that animal. And they will dig at its skin, eat from its skin. So, this is a hell on earth. And you will be eaten by other animals. If you take snacks from the sangha's money or the sangha's food. DE LTA BU'I SKYE BA'I RGYU YANG NI TSE BA'I NYAL BA YIN Those are hell on earth. DE LTA BU'I SKYE BA'I RGYU YANG and the cause to be born there RANG RES BYANG MED PAR ZHIG GRUB You and me, we have countless karma seeds already to be born there. BDUN DE'I SDUG BSNGAL RANG THOG TU MYONG SO So, it's important to imagine in your meditations that you are already there. And those animals are eating away from your skin. And again, we have been born there many times. And part of you remembers. And you can see it in what do you call it? Horror movies. All those things in the horror movies are real. Those monsters, they're real. And people are making what they remember, but they don't remember they remember. I was going to stop there. This course, I was supposed to finish this much. But we are going faster than planned. So, I'm going to keep going. I want to congratulate you that you're out of the hell realms now. And now you get to go to the hungry ghosts. Okay, so let's take a break in case you get hungry during the hungry ghosts. Take a 10 minute break. I just want to make sure you're ready for the next few weeks, or few months. Please get your meditation book ready. And I'd like you to just use the cover. So move the plastic part. Do you have an extra one, anybody? Is there an extra one? Yeah? Where? Can you give it to Osiris? He wants to do death meditation. Okay. Then tomorrow morning, class, I'm going to take an examination. No, you're going to take an examination. In Tibetan you say take means I'm going to give you an examination. Just from the pictures, okay? I'm going to show the picture up here, and I'm going to ask which meditation is it. It's not a group examination. I'm going to do a lottery. Nicole is going to have all the names of the people ready in a hat. Then one of these pictures will go up on the screen, and that person will tell me what's the meditation. So don't embarrass yourself. Don't say, I don't know, this guy is trying to find a zit pimple. Okay, you understand? Okay. That's exam for tomorrow, so be ready. Okay. No singing in the class. Let's do a little bit of hungry spirits, and then we'll do some questions. NYID PA'I DAG GIS SDUG BSNGAL BSAM PA LA So the second meditation about the lower realms is about, in Tibetan language they call it YI DAG. In Sanskrit they call it PRETA. Scott or Reid's going to show me a picture of one. I found a picture of one this morning. Okay. This is Gollum from the Lord of the Rings movie. And it's a very good PRETA. Okay, and again, the person who made the movie or who wrote the book, they are remembering something, but they don't realize they are remembering something. And we have been this kind of creature many times. And we're going to study about this kind of creature so that we can learn how to avoid it. In North America we have this story of a haunted house. You try to sleep there and you can hear all these ghosts. Buddhism says those are real. In that case the people were attached to their house. Then they died suddenly. Like they paid mortgage for 29 and a half years and then they died. And they're like, 30 year mortgage, right? Okay, so we're going to read about what is that kind of life like. And in the afternoon we will study how to avoid it. Okay, here we go. NYID PA'I YI BDAG GIS SDUG BSNGAL BSAM PA LA If you meditate about the suffering of these, we will call them hungry ghosts. I don't like the word, but it's okay. Hungry ghosts. BYAMS PA'I ZHES LUGS LAS means the word of gentle voice, which is written by Fifth Dalai Lama. It's a lam rim. Famous lam rim. SBYUN DU LAS SBYUN DU LAS YI BDAG SHES RAB Oh, I'm sorry. SBYUN DU DANG POR GSUNGS PA NI In that lam rim, they teach animals before they teach hungry ghosts. In this lam rim, we're going to teach hungry ghosts first and then animals. So, somebody asked the lama why this book ... the other book teaches animals first and this book teaches hungry ghosts first. Why? SBYUN DU LAS YI BDAG SHES RAB CHE BA Hungry ghosts are more intelligent than animals. Both of them are stupid. Hungry ghosts are less stupid. And I know dolphins sing and that's okay. But try to teach the pen to your dog and then tell me how it goes. So don't tell me, I understand. YI BDAG SHES RAB CHE BA'I RIGS MTHO LA So, RGA SHIG LA CHOS DE NA KHO NUS PA YOD So there exist hungry ghosts who can understand a little bit of Dharma if you explain it to them. SBYUN DU LAS ZHING MONGS PA But animals are ... they just have a very low intelligence. So V likes to buy flowers for our garden. Then she buys many kinds of flowers and she will bring them and put them on the front porch. Don't tell her, okay? She says, I'll plant those tomorrow. Keep watering them. Usually it's about three weeks. I have to water them every day. Then nowadays we have a squirrel family. They can climb over anything and they start to eat the flowers before we plant them. So I got a special trap. You should get one if you have any kind of animal problems or mouse problems. It's called have a heart. Have a heart. Then they just make traps to catch animals safely. Then I take them away, far away. A mouse you have to take about over a mile away. So I caught a squirrel. Then it was mommy squirrel. Then I figure out she has three or four babies. I catch her, took her to a beautiful park. There's a river there. Big park. But before I took her, one of the other squirrels is watching her outside the cage. She's in the cage and the other squirrel is looking at her. Then I brought the cage back and caught the other one. He saw everything. He saw her eat something, the cage dropped. Then he saw some peanuts and he wanted to go in and he also got caught. Then another one came to watch him. I did twelve. And they're all watching everything. I set up the cage with the peanut inside. Catch another one. And he's like, and the other one's like, and he's like, Then I said, it's lucky they are so stupid. You just catch one. They can see everything trapped. Then they can't think, I shouldn't have made the turn. They see one peanut, they forget everything. It's like a boy, a male who sees a donut. Forget everything. Then I was thinking, it was just before I came here, and I was thinking, boy, they're really stupid. They can't understand they shouldn't go inside. CHOS LA BAR CHOS KYI YID BDAG LAS CHE BA'I Actually, to be born as an animal is more of an obstacle than to be born as a hungry ghost. Hungry ghosts can maybe learn some Dharma. So in that lam rim, they teach the animal realm after the hell realm. Second worst rebirth. According to, do you have a chance to stop your suffering? But, NIR LAM LAS YID BDAG DANG PO RDZAS PA NI but the other lam rim called the quick path, they teach YID BDAG first, hungry ghosts. Why? CI KHYAB LA BDUN DU LAS SDUG BSNGAL CHE BA'I YIN Because, according to how much suffering they have, the hungry ghosts suffer more than the animals. So now we're ready to start the hungry ghosts. NI LA NYID YID BDAG CI SDUG BSNGAL TSA BA DKA' BA DRAN PA KHO MA MYA BA JIG PA'I SDUG BSNGAL BSAM PA STE GRUB There are six parts according to what they suffer. Hot. Too cold. Hungry. Thirsty. Exhausted. Tired. Exhausted. And afraid. Okay, six different kinds of suffering that these hungry ghosts have. And after that we'll talk about different kinds of hungry spirits. Okay, first one. DANG PO CI SDUG BSNGAL BSAM PA LA DI LTAR BSAM DGOS In general, if you want to meditate about the suffering of a hungry ghost, here's how you can do it. SNGAGS THA LTA NYAL BAR MA SKYES KYANG Okay, so maybe I make some good enough karma that I don't have to go to the hell. But, NYID BDAG TU SKYE YOD NA But if I were born as a hungry ghost, RTZA RANG PHRAD KHONG NYAL JIG GI SDUG BSNGAL SOGS DKA' BA'I It would be very difficult because of the heat, cold, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and fear. SNAR NAS CHOS BYAS GYUR LTA ZHOG Then, when you reach that realm, it's hopeless to think you can study Dharma there. BYAS ROL BSAM PA TZANG YANG BRAL MI THUB You can't even think, I wish I could study Dharma. You don't even have this thought. THAR RA'I LAM MED DKA' DRIN GYI BRAL MA SKYES PAR So, right now, we are in a human realm. We haven't been born as a hungry ghost because of LAM MED DKA' DRIN. Yeah, the kindness of our teacher. So there's a very nice Buddhist word. It's called DKA' DRIN. Say DKA' DRIN. DKA' DRIN It doesn't have this word in English. I don't think in Spanish. But it specifically the kindness of your Lama. Lama kindness. Lama kindness. I wrote this book called How Yoga Works, right? In three year retreat. And I'm happy about it. It's ... what do you call it? It's very high on Amazon. We publish it ourselves. It's in the top .1% of the top 1% But there was a book I wrote before that. Both of them during the three year retreat. So first year and a half I didn't look at any books. Second year and a half I wrote two books. But I didn't publish the first one yet. It's a story about how a young Chinese girl become a Geshe a thousand years ago by tricking all the Geshes. Anyway, I was trying to think what to call that book. So I called it, I just called it DKA' DRIN. Because it's about the kindness of your Lama. So that's a beautiful word. You should learn it. And my toughest high school teacher who taught me how to write was a very grumpy old lady named Catherine. So in Russian it's like Katrina, right? So I thought DKA' DRIN is a good name. DKA' DRIN KYIS BDER MA SKYES PA Due to our Lama's kindness we haven't been born there yet. CHOS BYANG CHUB LAM GYI RIM PO SGOM KUL TZAM BYAS RGYU CHUNG BA And we have a chance in this life to pretend we are practicing. The Lam Rim. SEMS RNAMS RE BYAS We have that much good karma. Then he says, you should learn okay Adam, you ready? RTAB LAS Say RTAB LAS The more common form is RTAB YA Say RTAB YA It's a sarcastic statement. Yeah, it means oh, great! The student runs into class and says at 8.30 Geshe-la, today I'm on time. Oh, yeah, great, great. And then, when you say RTAB YA your eyes should go like that. RTAB YA Oh, Geshe-la, I did five minutes of meditation yesterday. Oh, RTAB YA Great, great. He's making a joke here. You had enough karma to pretend to practice Lam Rim. You're so good. NGES KYANG LAM RIGS RGYUD LA DER PHAN CHAD KYI LAS LHAG LA MA NYAM PA THOB PA'I MA BU ZHIG YOD But we have already collected a lot of seeds to be born as a hungry ghost. And those seeds are ... let's try to get it right LHAG LA MA NYAM PAR Yeah, we've collected those seeds, but we haven't done anything to damage those seeds. So, they're very healthy seeds and we are watering them every day. And if you don't learn how to block them, then ZHIG TSUN LHAG So, definitely you're going to be born there. And those seeds are THOB BSTAN. Those seeds have THOB. Power. They're powerful. ZHIG YOD PAS DE DAG MA ZHIG TSUN LA LHAG MED DU SBYONG MI THUB PA ZHIG TSUN LA means ... MA ZHIG TSUN means before you die. MA ZHIG TSUN LHAG MED DU SBYONG You should try to clean them completely. MI THUB PA NI But the fact that you haven't done that yet, you can understand from how your life is going right now. Is your life going super smooth? If not, you probably haven't cleaned those seeds that after you die will cause you trouble. So, that's a pretty heavy statement. If your life is not going super smooth, now you probably have the seeds to be born as a hungry ghost at least. Because if you had cleaned those seeds, your life would be amazing already. DER MA ZAD Not only that, SPYIR NA GCIG KHA'I SEMS DU BZHIN DU GAL BYED TE The state of mind you have at the moment of death is very important. MTSAN DIR GDIG PA CHEN PO'I BYED PAS GDIG MTSAN YANG PHYI KHAR DGE BZHIN SHA LTAG KYI SNANG NAS CI NA Even a person who did very bad things during their life, like kill people, if they work very hard on their deathbed to maintain a very clear good karma state of mind, SNGON GYI DGE BA'I LAS LA ZHIG NAS ZHIG LA GSOS BDEBS GSOS BDEBS Yeah, they will win the lottery. They have 1,000 bad numbers in the bowl. Their whole life they were very bad persons. They did a few nice things for their relatives. But, in the last few days of their life, if they focus on positive state of mind and then they choose one number, they will pick a good one. Okay, so in the Christian tradition there's a lot of stories about like Paul, who was a very bad person. And then suddenly he changed. And he had these great realizations. And we believe in Buddhism. We have people like that in Buddhism also. So, whole life they were bad persons. As they die, they decide, oh, I made a mistake. I only did a few good things, but I'm glad I did them. Then they will win the lottery. They will pick a good karma. So, it's not too late. If you have a friend who's dying, as we said, that confession by a priest and things like that, very good custom. LA But, CHOS PA DAG KYANG, PHYI RGA' KHO RDO SOGS KYI SNANGS NAS CI NA MI DGE BA'I LAS LA GSOS BDE PAR GYUR ZHING But if a person has been very spiritual their whole life, and in the last day, they control. They get very angry at somebody. Like their husband. Did you take out the garbage? No. You're so stupid! Then that last thought, that last thought picks the karma and it will be a bad karma. So, whole life they were nice persons, but they got angry in the last few hours. They will pick a bad karma. DE YANG PHAL CHEN ZHIN GYIS BLO KHAR MO KHONG PA CHE BA DE PHYI KHAR YANG SNGON DU GYUR BA'I Generally speaking, the state of mind that comes as you die is the state of mind of what you did most of the time when you were alive. So, if you had a habit of being a nice person during your life, usually you will pick a good karma when you die. RANG RES BDAG TU MYUR MONG THUGS SUM LA GOM ZHUGS BYAS BA'I But people like you and me, if you really learn to watch your mind, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, rejoice, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy. jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous chikar yang nge geway le la sung depay tak chos tak chos means, let's do our dictionary entry, Adam, okay? Tak chos, say tak chos. Tak chos. Tak sort of means like a rope, takpa, or anything which is woven. Chos is like dorje chupa, to cut. So, cut the rope in Tibetan means, for sure. For sure you will pick a bad karma. If during your life your mental state was jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, de na chikar sa tung la yin jung ne So now he's, when people are on the death bed, and you say, I have a nice churro for you. They're like, they're not excited by a nice churro. I don't, I think I can be, but we'll see. di ming yang mi thupa They do not want to even hear the word churro. No, no churro. shik jung na nyampa tabu sok chak dang kang rung gi yi dak su kye So, obviously, having desire for too much food is a very common cause of being born as a hungry ghost. But at the moment of death, to be very angry about food or say, don't talk to me about churros. That also picks a karma for hungry ghost. So it's interesting, he's saying strong feelings about food. Strong negative emotions about food. Either I want it or I don't want it. Both of those karmas pick a hungry ghost birth. gyik le sud tab na, yi dak gi neng nyen dur mi kyeway ngepa me Therefore, people like you and me, we don't have a guarantee that we won't go there. phel cher kyewar thag chur phel cher means, Stanley was asking me about phel chen avatamsaka, avatamsaka, the part of the kangyur. It's called majority. Stanley asked me about this, a part of the kangyur called majority. Here's the word. phel cher kyewar thag chur phel cher kyewar thag chur phel cher kyewar What's that? Let's go synapse. For sure, the odds are, the odds are for sure that we're going to be born there. We'll do about five more minutes, then I'll take questions. der kye na, yi dak gi ne ni So if you are born there, what's it feel like? What's it look like? pak tse ngab kya depe ok tu If you go 500 Buddhist miles below the earth, yojana, it's about 750 miles below the earth. There's a hungry spirit capital city. In Tibet, it's called serkya, which means pale yellow. What's sakya? Pale earth, and it's the ... that's where the sakya lineage comes from. There are monasteries built on a mountain which is pale earth, sakya. So, in Sanskrit, it's kapila. That's the city's name. ne der ne pang dang shing dang chu sok jung se kyang me That place has no meadow, no grass, no trees, no water. The whole area is like a copper plate. nyi me tsik means burned by the sun, and they live there. tabu shing yu, yi dak gi lu dang yen la nam kyang shing du cha mi nyonpa Then their bodies, can you put gollum up again? Their bodies are very out of proportion. They are not equal. go che means their heads are too big. dra singwa means their hair is like that. I'm getting close, okay? dong nyer me kye pa means ... and their face has many wrinkles on it. Looks like an old peach or something. kye ha jang traway, their neck is too skinny. go ol mi tekpa, and it cannot hold up their head very well. lu ri dak che la, their bodies are very big. kang lak jag ma tar, but their arms and legs are like as thin as grass. tra lu mi tekpa, and they can't hold up the body very well. rang re mi yul gyi geng ko nam jingpe lupo mi tekpe ga le ga le Let's do ga le, okay? dao ka a ka la sa le ga le means trouble in modern Tibetan. Like, how was your trip? They say, ah, ga le chenpo du, it was a real hassle. It means hassle. Ga le So, in our world, human world, when people get old, this chenpa means their thighs and their legs, they have trouble to support the body. But in the hungry ghost world, gyak gyur kyi chewa, hundred times worse. yenlak nam kyang trang mang yung mi nyom, then sometimes they have extra arms, or they don't have enough arms, or extra legs, or not enough legs. lo mangpar kong ma nye pay, they can spend many years looking for food and not find it. lu la trak dang chu ser sok len ching se tsam yin meypar, then their body doesn't have any kind of liquid. It's all dried out. No blood. No lymph. len ching se tsam yin meypar, dong kum kam por, ko wa mar kam kyi tum, dong tum kampo means a dried out tree trunk, like some of these almost. ko wa mar means a dry piece of leather. tumba means wrapped. So if you take an old piece of wood and you wrap it with leather, dry leather, that's what they look like. yulpa dang tsa sok dang kampo, parpa kampo yokpa, so parpa kampo yokpa means a coating of dry skin, on tendons and ligaments. Okay. gung kyur chepa na, when they try to move, kang lak gi tsig tape, the joints, you can hear the bones going like a skeleton. It sounds like shing gam taba, like taking two dry pieces of wood and hitting them together. Or do dang do taba means two pieces of rock, like this. trok ja means a cracking sound. me tat mar tsultsu chepa yu, like when you take two stones and you make a spark, sometimes you can see little sparks on their body. Okay, that's a cheerful place to stop. We'll continue on that tomorrow morning. This is just dessert. You were supposed to stay in the house until October. Anybody have a question? Pachi, do you have a microphone? We have about 15 minutes, 10 minutes. Thank you Geshe-la. No one ever thanked me for hell realms before. What I don't understand, you always tell us that karma is justice. Karma is what? Karma is justice. [Speaker 2] How does this lottery thing work with the concept of justice? [Speaker 1] I believe you are correct. If you've been good your whole life, and then you get angry on the last day, and you choose your lottery, and you get something bad, I think it's obvious that you must have done many, many, many bad things before this life. You see? So, when they had a priority, the four priorities, right? What karma opens first? Do you remember? They said nye wa na if it's close. So, if you are close to your death. But there are also two kinds of karma. pen je kyi le and dzog je kyi le pen je kyi le and dzog je kyi le pen je kyi le means the karma which throws your next life. And dzog je kyi le means the karma which completes your next life. And in the Abhidharma, it's supposed to be like a master painter, like Michelangelo. And in Michelangelo's time, he will paint the main, he will draw the main image, and if he's really busy, his assistants will do the coloring. So, there's a karma which throws your next life. It decides which of the six realms you will go to. Then there's dzog je kyi le means the details painter. And that decides whether you will be a tall human or a short human or a fat human. So, we're talking about pen je kyi le, the karma which throws the next life. And I agree, it's probably, it must be the one that you did the most. Otherwise, there wouldn't be justice. If you could make a mistake in the last five minutes, you live a whole good life and you make a mistake in the last five minutes, there's no justice. So, the whole system must be made by some old bad karma from many lifetimes. Okay. I agree. One more question? Thank you Geshe-la. This is the second time I've been here and this is an intense topic. You always come at the wrong time. At the same time, I'm very thankful for that. It's a strange question, but when you've been speaking about all these hells, it was very intense because I wonder if you've dreamed about them, it's that you've lived in them. I'm sorry, if you dream about them, it's that you've lived in them already. Oh yeah, for sure. Okay, thank you. Okay, yeah. I think all of us dream about that kind of thing sometimes. It's because we've been there before countless times. And if you want to go deeper on that, what do you call that? I forget the word for it in Tibetan. In Tibetan they talk about real fake and fake fake. And sometimes, what's it called? Jada, jada, right? There's a jaja and there's a dzunja. Djunja and jaja. And it means that dream is not real compared to when you woke up. So the dream about being in hell was not real, and when you woke up, you woke up into the real world. And that's correct. But, from a different point of view, the content of the dream is coming from your seeds. And the content of the waking is coming from your seeds. So from that point of view, the dream is not less real than the waking. They are both equally coming from your seeds. So we have to pay attention to our dreams. And if we consistently have negative dreams, it means we have bad seeds, and we have to take care of them. Then, there's a system for cleaning bad seeds. We'll talk about it this afternoon. But when you get indications that you have some negative seeds, indication that you have negative seeds, then you have to take care of them. So even if you don't remember what you did, so if you keep having one kind of negative dream, even though that's not real, it's still coming from seeds. And it's an indication that you have those seeds. So it's a good idea to purify them. So, I don't know, if you keep having dreams that your husband is lying to you, but when you wake up he seems very trustable, still it's a good idea to take care of those seeds. And the way to do that is to be super honest yourself, and dedicate it to your relationship. So even if you have dreams about your husband is cheating or something, but when you wake up you're like, oh, he's not like that, it still means you have those seeds in your mind. So it's important to purify them before it becomes real. And to do that, you just try to be more honest yourself. And send that karma to your husband during the coffee meditation is a good time. We have one minute left. Nick is done. [Speaker 2] Thank you Geshe-la for answering questions even which we didn't ask. [Speaker 1] Before we asked you, you already answered. There is one question that you were asking in debates you told us today, and we would like to hear an answer. It's about the perfect seeds of a Buddha and how still he can see our problems and try to help us. Okay, so I'll give an answer. Generally, Orit is a very nice person until she starts to teach yoga. Until she starts to teach yoga. Then I don't know what happens. But we were all traveling in India, and we met two young, very high Geshe candidates. Who was that? It was you and somebody else. Was it Hasso? I watched Hasso and Orit destroy two young, high Geshe candidates about this question. I was pretty impressed. We had a debate for like one hour. So, one part of the answer is that Buddha has, you can say, two bodies, three bodies, or four bodies. If you do it into three or four, then the physical body has two divisions. One is the physical body in their own paradise, like Amitabha's heaven. That's called enjoyment body. Enjoying their heaven. Then the second physical body is called nirmanakaya. It means the body they show on this planet. I think it's similar in Christianity. They call it trinity, right? God, Jesus, Holy Ghost. Then God is living in the heaven, and Jesus comes to this earth and can show many things, and can pretend to suffer. So that body which Buddha sends to this earth, you know, it has a big bump here, and long ears, but the one in the heaven is surrounded ... the definition of that heaven body is ngepa ngan den. Say ngepa. Ngan den. Five certain bodies. Five certain qualities. So anyway, we were debating that to these Geshes. One of the five certain qualities of a Buddha in their own paradise is they can't see anybody lower than a tenth level bodhisattva. They just never meet them because they don't have the karma to meet anybody less than that. Then sometimes we feel like our DCI life is like that. In DCI we call it the bubble. We only meet nice people. We only get to stay in nice places. We only see very intelligent students because it's coming from you. So in one way it's not possible for a Buddha to see a suffering person. But when somebody asked my Lama this question in New York, in New York City in 1975, he laughed, he said, and then somebody said, well, if Buddha cannot see suffering how can they help anybody? Then he said, I don't know, maybe they retired. And he wouldn't give us an answer. Sometimes he'd just tell us, you cook it. So on that day he didn't, he refused to give us an answer. I'll tell you another theory is that Buddha ... Now this is cool. When a Buddha, if I'm not a Buddha and a Buddha looks at me, they see me as a Buddha. Their seeds are so good they see me as a Buddha. They see me as a Buddha. But how I see myself is as a suffering ... They see me as a Buddha, but I see myself as a suffering person. Their karma is so good that when they look at me they see like an angel. But when I look in the mirror I see a suffering person. And I think that's correct. I think that's how it is. They see me as an angel. I see me as suffering. And both are correct. Now comes another question. Can they see that the angel sees themself as not an angel? Because it's one of the things which exist in the universe. It's how I see myself. It's one of the existing things in the universe. And definition of Buddha, they can see every existing thing in the universe. So it must be that while they see me as an angel, at the same time they can see that I don't see myself as an angel. But if they can see that I don't see myself as an angel, are they seeing suffering? Maybe. Yeah. I think we have to leave it there. Maybe you cook it. Maybe you cook it. We can go that far. We can say, Buddha sees you as a Buddha. And obviously, well there's actually a solution, but I'm not going to tell you. Do they see that you don't see yourself as a Buddha? So we can go that far. They are surrounded by Buddhas. Or 10th level Bodhisattvas. And even when they look at a normal person, they see angel. And it's real. The person is an angel. But that person themself doesn't see themself as angel. So this far, definitely possible. Okay? Everybody okay that far? I'm going to take a break. Maybe we go deeper. Maybe we go deeper in the afternoon.
