[Speaker 1]
Okay, we'll go a little bit more on the text. This is called dashi pe dzintar. Dashi pe dzintar means good luck class.

It means we don't have much time, we'll just do it for good luck. Twelve? We have to stop at twelve?

For sure? Okay.

[Speaker 2]
We can go a little bit. Twelve-fifteen? Twelve-thirteen?

[Speaker 1]
Twelve-fifteen. Okay. ,GZHAN GSUM PA BZHIN RANG CHAGS KYI DE LTAR, ,LTA ZHOG SNGA LTUN GCIG LA'ANG, ,MI GUR GCIG TZAM CHA TZAM ZHIG MI BSGOM PA, So that Geshe Kamala was complaining to his student because he cannot meditate when he's asleep, and during the day he was checking his yaks and other things.

[Speaker 2]
Then Pabongka Rinpoche adds his comment.

[Speaker 1]
,LTA ZHOG SNGA LTUN GCIG LA'ANG, ,MI GUR GCIG TZAM CHA TZAM ZHIG MI BSGOM PA, We can't even finish a five-minute meditation without thinking about lunch or airport. ,LTA ZHOG SNGA LTUN THOB PA MI SKYE BA GDUG NYAMS PA NI, And then you complain in your mind, you say, you know, I'm not getting... I didn't meet any angels today.

It's not the teaching's fault. You didn't dedicate any time of your day to it, so of course you're not going to get any result. ,NYAMS LEN MDO ROL DUG PA, So we have to make, say, ,NYAMS LEN MDO ROL DUG PA, Start taking an entry.

,NYAMS LEN, NYAMS MA SO NYAMS LEN, ,BLA DUS MA LAS NA LEN, ,RDO RA LTA LTAR DAG NA RO RDO RU, ,RA ZHIG GIS RU ZA RU, ,THAR ZHIG GIS THUGS KA ZA THUGS, ,NYAMS LEN MDO ROL DUG PA, What's a DO? Like Dorje. Stone.

RU means bone. We had NING RU this morning. Heart bone.

THUGS PA means they... One meaning of THUGS is noodles. One meaning of THUGS is to meet each other.

[Speaker 2]
THUGS CHUNG THUGS CHUNG To meet each other.

[Speaker 1]
Like THAR ZHIG GIS THUGS CHUNG SHIN PAG PA LAS A. I met my friend at Starbucks this morning. THUGS So here, what does it mean, RDO RU THUGS?

Next picture. It's almost like that. I chose this picture.

Then in Tibet people eat a lot of meat. I'm sorry. Because there's no vegetables there because it's dry.

Anyway, it's a bad excuse.

[Speaker 2]
But when you eat meat then you get to the bone then they will take a big rock and they will smash the bone.

[Speaker 1]
Inside there's some red part, marrow, and they will eat it like that. So I tried to find a picture of that, but it was too disgusting. So this is what we do in America.

You crack the nuts with this instrument and then you have to pick out the inside and eat it. It means you should do your Dharma like this. You should smash it.

Smash that meditation. Like do it, break it. And then get to the inside.

And taste the delicious taste inside the meditation. In English we say you can crack the meditation. Like the safe at the bank that has all the money inside.

Then those super hip thieves come. In English we say you crack the lock.

[Speaker 2]
You crack the lock. So you have to crack the meditations.

[Speaker 1]
You can crack our yoga poses also. One of my teachers named David Lai, then he will find a picture of somebody doing completely crazy yoga pose, like one leg is here and one arm is there, and I don't know where's the other arm. Then his wife likes to show off her husband's yoga.

So she used to do a calendar every year. She'd make him wear almost nothing. Then like this, and she'll take a photo.

I told him, you know, that's amazing. Those poses are amazing. And he's like, yeah, it takes me six weeks to get into one of those poses.

I study the pose. I'd say, okay, I have to loosen up this joint, and then I have to loosen up this joint, and then I have to loosen up this joint. So he will spend six weeks just to loosen up one bone.

And then three days before he stops eating, then they shave all his hair.

[Speaker 2]
He asked me to do a book with him. I'm in the book, you know.

[Speaker 1]
Then they said, three days before you have to shave everything. And don't eat for three days. And then when you get to the photography studio, they put oil everywhere.

Then they say, okay, go. Then you put, when I'm here, and then you're like, okay, take the photo fast. And then you're like, oh, yeah, okay.

Okay. You crack the pose. So you have to crack your meditation like that.

How deep can you go? Have fun with it.

[Speaker 2]
Do five minutes, over and over, and then crack the pose.

[Speaker 1]
Crack that meditation. Find the in every meditation, in every meditation, there are many levels of meaning. But you will never find them if you don't do it frequently.

Then I saw some people, they were meditating on a bench. I have a friend, he used to always meditate in the baggage area of the airport waiting for his luggage. He gets off the plane, goes to the baggage area, if you're on United, the baggage always arrives late.

Then use the time. He will sit in the corner of the baggage area, and he will meditate there on the floor.

[Speaker 2]
So, after today, well, starting at the airport, use the time.

[Speaker 1]
Usually you go to Starbucks, you order a coffee, you sit there for 15 minutes. What's this? Wee, wee, wee, wee.

Wee, wee, wee, wee. Wee, wee, wee. This is a Starbucks detector.

I always use it at the airport. They know, Scott and Ori, I go like this. Wee, wee, wee.

They say, what are you doing? Wee, wee, wee. Oh, Geshe-la is checking to see if there is a Starbucks in this airport.

[Speaker 2]
Then you go there, have a hot chocolate, and do a five-minute meditation.

[Speaker 1]
My friend also used to do it in the train stations in India, because the train is always late. Everybody heard that joke, but maybe one person didn't hear that joke. So I'll tell the joke again.

An American businessman went to Mumbai. He met Mr. Patel. They're supposed to take a train to New Delhi to do some business.

It's supposed to leave at six o'clock in the evening. Mr. Patel and Mr. Smith went to the Mumbai train station at 5.30 to wait for the train. Mr. Patel told Mr. Smith, I have to warn you, in India all of the trains are very late. Then Mr. Smith was happy because he had his Insight meditation app. He said, no problem Mr. Patel. I will do some meditation while we're waiting.

[Speaker 2]
But there was a problem. The train came exactly on time.

[Speaker 1]
Indian train. Three people on top. Did I say three?

Three hundred. Then Mr. Smith says, I'm very disappointed.

[Speaker 2]
You told me the trains are always late. I was hoping to do a couple of five minute meditations. But this train is exactly on time.

[Speaker 1]
Yes Mr. Smith, but this is yesterday's train. So, my lama in India, he told me, you can meditate in the train station, but put your passport and your money here underneath. As soon as you close your eyes, all your stuff is disappearing.

So, Khanser, yun ten shik yinpa tabu sarve, tam dun du, duy ngun ka mi tsum tsum tsam che de kwa ne, tsa dun lang gi rinpay nyam tok kye war du tang ni. It's not enough to just do some small prayer in the morning. You're not even focusing on the prayer.

Your mind is like this. yun ten kun gyi shing nyu du duje, tsu shing trapa lang gyur drapa ru le pa. That fire offering prayer, So, we're supposed to memorize the first hour and a half.

dukye nanggala ma'ang nguyen yin la tsok gu kyi la me yin nam chok su dang du dzun me dzok gyu go ne chok par gyur la da dang dro nang gyi tsa rang nyen pe zin tsam du du din ne tsong du ji zhi tsa chok nyinpa la ji gyi ba du ber en la ma dang ma na ma So, if you get really good at it, you can recite the whole thing without thinking about it once. da dang dro nang gyi tsa rang nyen pe tsam du du din ne tsong du ji zhi tsa chok nyinpa la ji gyi ba du ber en la ma dang ma na nang gyi tsa chok yin yi do pe tsang gi drong tu du yin na la gyal du ji yin na la gyal du... Okay, so he's complaining.

If you can't focus on your practice, or you just start, the first two minutes you are thinking about it, and then after that you're thinking about other things, then don't be disappointed if nothing happens. Yeah, there's another joke there, but I'm not going to tell you. DE NA, DKA' DANG PA RGOMS PA RIN PO RIN CHEN LA MED MI RGYANG ZING BLO RGYAL GYI'I GONG SANGS SROD This is actually a good place to stop.

Now I'll teach you this and then we'll do one more meditation, okay? I like this one. So there was a DKA' DANG PA Lama a thousand years ago.

His name is GOMS PA RIN CHEN LAMA, and he said there are three things you have to do.

[Speaker 2]
Look far ahead.

[Speaker 1]
Then, what did you say? Think big. Look far ahead, think big, and tune the string.

Tune the guitar string.

[Speaker 2]
Okay, then what's that mean?

[Speaker 1]
Okay, guitar in Tibetan is called DRAG NYON. Okay, what's that mean?

[Speaker 2]
Sweet sound, sweet sound.

[Speaker 1]
Okay, what do you think look far ahead means? Yeah, look ahead to your own Buddhahood. We have this idea, we want to make a museum exhibition for kids, and then when they come in, wow, I don't know what that was.

[Speaker 2]
We're supposed to make them?

[Speaker 1]
Okay, when they come in they will see many paintings like Tara, and Manjushri, and Yamantaka. Then you ask them which one you want to be. Then they can pick one that looks good to them.

[Speaker 2]
And then we thought to take their own photo and put it on that thangka, and print the thangka in like two minutes for them, and give them the thangka.

[Speaker 1]
So Tara looks like the little girl, for example, and then they always keep it in their room. They will grow up with this picture of them as a Buddha.

[Speaker 2]
So we're supposed to do that in the meditation. Imagine that you are a Buddha, and you are sitting with your lama in the sky, and you have responsibility to take care of the whole planet. Probably you are eating churros with your lama.

[Speaker 1]
You are sitting in the sky, and you're like, oh look, they need some help in Guadalajara. That lady from Guangzhou is not doing her five-minute meditations. Let's go down there and talk to her.

Like that. So, there will come a day when you are responsible for a whole planet.

[Speaker 2]
So, get used to it. Think ahead.

[Speaker 1]
You can put your photo on a Buddha statue or something.

[Speaker 2]
Tape your photo to the Buddha's face, and think ahead.

[Speaker 1]
That's called mik gyang zing.

[Speaker 2]
Mik means your eye.

[Speaker 1]
Gyang means far away. Zing is related to ringbo, meaning look ahead, far. It's a Tibetan word.

[Speaker 2]
Ringbo. Look ahead.

[Speaker 1]
Okay, so sometimes you can do that meditation, and we will do it today. Okay?

[Speaker 2]
Think ahead.

[Speaker 1]
Then lo gyak yin. What? Oh, this gyang means wine.

It means think big. Okay? So, don't think you are taking care of one small group, one small sangha.

Or you're just helping Guadalajara.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? Then you should think big. At Diamond Mountain, I like to take my students outside at night.

[Speaker 1]
There's lots of stars. There's one constellation called Orion. There are three stars are his belt, and there's two stars for his feet, and there's two stars for his hands.

[Speaker 2]
And if you look closely, there's a sword. If you find the two feet, and you draw a line, and you keep going a little bit, there's a very bright blue star.

[Speaker 1]
It's one of the brightest stars in the sky.

[Speaker 2]
It's called Sirius.

[Speaker 1]
Then I always tell my students, okay, there's Orion.

[Speaker 2]
There's his hands. There's his belt. There's his feet.

Draw a line between the feet. Go a little bit further. You see that bright blue star?

[Speaker 1]
Then they're like, yes, that's the next DCI tour is going there.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? So don't think small. If you go out at night, there are millions of stars.

[Speaker 1]
Then think about it. If you're a Buddha, you can go there. There's people in many of those stars.

[Speaker 2]
There's people on planets around many of those stars.

[Speaker 1]
They are very similar to us. On many of those planets, there's no Buddha yet. It's like a city where there's no McDonald's yet.

The McDonald's company, they are very excited to find a city where there's no McDonald's. We can put a McDonald's there. If you find a planet that doesn't have a Buddha yet, you can go there.

You can be the Buddha there. Okay? You will have the power.

Then you have to ... I saw many people babysitting Tara.

[Speaker 2]
Where's Tara?

[Speaker 1]
I was also babysitting Tara for like two minutes. But later you have to babysit a whole planet. You can say, this is my planet.

[Speaker 2]
Think big.

[Speaker 1]
Look ahead. Talking about babies, do you have that picture of Ken Rinpoche that we almost used for the telephone? We did?

Okay. Tell me when you got it. What was the third one?

First one is look ahead.

[Speaker 2]
Second one was think big.

[Speaker 1]
Tuning the guitar. Tuning the guitar. Okay.

If ... sitar also, if you tune it too loose, it goes boom, boom, boom. Okay.

Then if you say, if you turn it too much, on a sitar, the string will break.

[Speaker 2]
It gets too tight. Too tight.

[Speaker 1]
And it sometimes hits you in the eye. So when you tune a sitar, you're like ...

[Speaker 2]
You ready?

[Speaker 1]
So it means your practice, your practice shouldn't be too tight. Okay, I'll tell you about this picture. So my Lama passed away in 2004.

[Speaker 2]
So they look for him for a long time, to find the new Lama, new baby.

[Speaker 1]
And they found him. And now he's in the monastery, and he's studying.

[Speaker 2]
I believe he's the real one.

[Speaker 1]
Why? Immediately he got a dog. Then one day the dog was sick.

And he said, in English he said, we need to give the dog more dog food.

[Speaker 2]
Then my Lama used to overfeed his dog.

[Speaker 1]
His dog's stomach is always on the ground when they walk. His stomach is dragging on the ground. And I said, Rinpoche, you know, you're going to kill this dog.

[Speaker 2]
You keep feeding it all day, isn't it?

[Speaker 1]
He said, yeah, but he will die so happy. So when the boy said, we have to feed the dog, he doesn't know English.

[Speaker 2]
He said, we have to feed the dog. He said it in English? Yeah, in English.

So, I believe he's the real one.

[Speaker 1]
Anyway, his mother, I think it's behind, recently she sent me something. Because we are always, you know, working on, we're helping him. Then it's called a purpa.

It means a special kind of Buddhist knife.

[Speaker 2]
He mailed that.

[Speaker 1]
Then a special knife. It looks like a vajra, but it has a blade. Then when we start a new monastery or a new temple, we will put that knife in the ground, and it protects the whole place.

So, she sent me a, we call it purpa, a knife.

[Speaker 2]
Religious knife.

[Speaker 1]
I think it's pure gold, and I want to offer it to Elhandra and Imelda. It means a good start. Good start.

[Speaker 2]
Auspicious start.

[Speaker 1]
And when the baby grows up, they can wear it sometimes on the neck.

[Speaker 2]
Okay?

[Speaker 1]
Alright. So, let's do that. Oh, last one.

Okay? Don't tighten the string too tight. Oh, Geshe-la said I cannot waste five minutes.

I have to do something. I have to meditate. I have to do something.

Then don't let your practice make you nervous.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? And don't feel guilty. Okay?

[Speaker 1]
Oh, I'm a bad person. Instead of yoga, I ate birthday cake today. Okay?

Don't think like that.

[Speaker 2]
Sometimes you have to take a break. Sometimes cake is okay. Sometimes cake is better than yoga.

But if you eat cake every day, the string is too loose.

[Speaker 1]
Then your meditation shouldn't be like, boop, boop, boop. So, you have to find the right tension.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? And it's difficult.

[Speaker 1]
And you won't be able to do it all the time. Sometimes you'll be too lazy. Sometimes you'll be too, too, too much energy.

Oh, I have to do it. I have to do it. You know?

[Speaker 2]
Buddhist practice goes like this.

[Speaker 1]
Oh, my five minute meditations are going great. I'm feeling so great. My boyfriend is nice.

My parents are happy. Then, then, okay. Then you blow it.

Everything becomes disaster. Your boyfriend's angry all the time.

[Speaker 2]
Your parents aren't happy.

[Speaker 1]
Yeah. Then you go like, choo, choo, choo, choo, choo, and then you go, bop. Then Buddhist person has to do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, bop.

Do, do, do, do, do, do, bop. Do, do, do, do, do, do, bop. Okay?

It goes like this.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? So, don't expect this. Okay?

It doesn't happen. Okay? You will have problems.

[Speaker 1]
And you will have big problems. And then just get back up. You know, that Tara.

When she falls down, she's just like, waaah. She's like, boom. Then she's like, hee hee.

Then she gets up. Just get back up.

[Speaker 2]
And start again. Sometimes you lose your practice for one week. Sometimes for two years.

Then just, you know, just start again. You don't have a choice. You have to do it.

If you don't do it, you will die. You will lose everything. So, death will remind you.

Okay? Then just start again. Start again.

Start again. Okay? Don't get all freaked out.

[Speaker 1]
I'm a bad person. I didn't do my yoga for six days.

[Speaker 2]
Just shut up and do your yoga.

[Speaker 1]
Again. Again. Don't ...

Just start again. Okay?

[Speaker 2]
That's all you can do. Okay, one last meditation for good luck.

[Speaker 1]
We're going to picture ourselves. Well, let's do it together. Then picture a beautiful planet, resting in the dark, black space.

[Speaker 2]
And it's a very beautiful blue color from the oceans.

[Speaker 1]
And there are beautiful clouds and air around it.

[Speaker 2]
And you are sitting with your heart lama over the planet.

[Speaker 1]
And you are silent. You can feel the warmth of your heart teacher next to you.

[Speaker 2]
And you are both looking down on this planet with great love for everyone there. And you are taking care of all those people.

[Speaker 1]
And they are your responsibility. Three deep breaths. Okay, stretch.

So those are ... carry that with you. You can take a photo of all the photos and keep it on your phone.

And just look at the photo and try to remember what's the meditation. Okay?
