[Speaker 1]
Okay, let's meditate. So, this meditation is at the bottom of page four. It took me a long time on the internet to find a finger with a piece of dust on it.

So, if you look very carefully, you can see brown dust there. What's it mean?

[Speaker 2]
Huh?

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, I mean, you are the dot on the finger of the Buddha. You made it to Amatitana. I'd rather call it tequila, it's easier.

And you are that compared to all the pieces of dust on the whole planet, under your bottom, down to the middle. I used to enjoy digging in the backyard. I told you this before.

When I was a little kid. They have these army soldiers, like this big. We will have a war, you know.

Then I will dig a little bit deeper. And then one day, I think my mom wanted to stop me from digging up the lawn. So, she said, stop doing that.

Why, why mom?

[Speaker 2]
You will hit China.

[Speaker 1]
Then everybody in China is upside down. And you will have trouble to talk to them also. Then, when you do this meditation, you have to put your mind all the way to China.

[Speaker 2]
How many pieces of dust are there in the whole planet?

[Speaker 1]
And you are this one. You made it to this class. Okay, so we're just going to meditate like that.

You are one in about a hundred million people. And there's no way to question the fact that you are special. Okay, you are very close.

Out of all the people in the universe, you are very close to being a buddha. Then it's good to think about it.

[Speaker 2]
You don't have to go on the subway and tell everybody, you know, but in your mind, not to be proud, but to rejoice.

[Speaker 1]
It does not get much better than that. That's the part of the song. That's my favorite part of that song.

It's okay.

[Speaker 2]
She's singing better.

[Speaker 1]
She's singing better. But, you know, you should ... I don't know, you should be happy all the time.

You are special. Okay, you have some money problems. And your boyfriend isn't what you expected.

You know, and your boss bothers you. But, okay, you are one in a hundred million. It's okay.

Okay, and you won't feel that unless you meditate on it every day. So, you have to ... Yeah, okay.

Take five. Ready? Take five.

And I want you to keep this book in your house, on your meditation place, until March. Alright? And you don't worry much about the words.

Just look at the picture. Then look at the picture, turn on the app. That's all.

Here we go. I'm super special.

[Speaker 2]
Buddha said so.

[Speaker 1]
Think about digging to China. Three deep breaths. Start with the exhale.

Don't move until you finish the three breaths. Stretch.

[Speaker 2]
Any comments?

[Speaker 1]
About that one? Nope. That one makes me feel, first of all, I feel better about myself.

And then secondly, I feel like I shouldn't get in a car accident or anything. I should take care of myself. Maybe I should eat better.

Do my yoga more often. You know, I have this ... what do you call that?

What's that car the guy drove us around in? Maserati. What was the other one?

Aston Martin, yeah. This is my Maserati. I have to take good care of it.

I shouldn't hurt it with bad food or things like that. Okay, let's go to the book. Okay.

DER MA SA BDAG GIS LAM MA BDAG PO GSUNGS RGYUN MANG NAG LTAR So then Pabongka says, my lama used to talk about this. And he said, there are those three ways of thinking about my equipment. RGYUD GRUB DKA' BA'I RKYANGS BSTAN GYUR NI DKA' BA It's difficult for Joe to do the work, so it was difficult.

Because it was difficult for Joe to do the work, it's difficult for me to have this equipment. DNGOS RDZOMS DKA' BA'I RKYANGS NYES KYAS It's difficult by nature to have a healthy human body and mind. And BAS CI DKA' BA'I It's difficult to really find a good example.

Maybe this one is, it's too many. This and the whole earth, this is too many. Because it's many, many, many billions to one, the chances.

NYID DKA' BA ZHIG RGYUD ZIN GSUM BSAM TSUL GSUNGS NAS BDE NA LTAR BA'I RTEN GNYIS NYES SDI LA BDUN MA BSTAN LAS Say BDUN MA? BDUN MA BSTAN LAS In the three principal paths, he calls it DENG GIS BDUN MA. DENG GIS BDUN MA So let's start a dictionary.

BDUN MA BSTAN LAS And in the three principal paths at the end, it's called DENG GIS BDUN MA. BDUN MA means your dreams, like goals. And DENG means ultimate.

Here it means ultimate. It has meanings of firm, for example. Like, are you sure the train is coming at five o'clock?

And in colloquial you say DENG DENG DU. DENG DEN DENG DEN DU BAS Yeah, DENG DEN DU DENG DEN Okay. So there's a DENG LAS and there's a DENG NYES.

What's the difference, Mr. Word? DENG That's NGES NGES NGES Yeah, definite good and definite bad. Okay.

So DENG LAS means, with this equipment you can reach Buddhahood. And if you mess up, you're going to reach the hell realms. YAR DO MA'I RDOS ZAN TZAM You should know there are two directions you can go with this equipment.

I like this next line. DE YANG GZHAN LA RE BA'I PHYIR MI DGOS PA You don't have, in the Dharma business, you don't need to worry about anybody else. DAM GOS RANG LOGS NA YOD PA You have a power in your own hands.

You choose. You want the ultimate great thing or the ultimate mess up? Which one do you want?

You want to win the Indy 500 with your Maserati or you want to smash it into a wall? Which one do you want? Then Dharma, Dharma stuff, RANG LOGS NA YOD It's up to you.

[Speaker 2]
It's in your hands.

[Speaker 1]
Nobody else can ruin your Maserati and no one else can use your Maserati to win the race. KYI SDUG GI DAM KHA Say KYI SDUG I taught you this word before. I'll teach it to you again because you forget everything after two minutes.

And that was about two years ago. KYI means GYI PO means what? GYI PO DU I'm happy.

I'm happy. Oh, okay, we won't do that. SDUG means SDUG BSNGAL I'm suffering.

So, what's KYI SDUG GCIG PA? Yeah, all for all and one for all. All for one and one for all.

So, when you join a monastery, you make a vow. I will support the monastery and the monastery will support me. We're all together.

We had a debate. We had a little debate. I said, we got to make sure the water is safe at the retreat.

Then after a lot of debate, he's like, okay, we'll give all the foreigners bottled water and the Mexicans, they are used to the water, they just drink the usual water. Then I'm like, no, KYI SDUG GCIG PA Either we all get bottled water or we all don't get bottled water. Like that, okay?

[Speaker 2]
That's called KYI SDUG GCIG PA That's called KYI SDUG GCIG PA Either we're all happy together or we all suffer together.

[Speaker 1]
So, here KYI SDUG DAM GAR, what's DAM GAR?

[Speaker 2]
It's DAM GAR.

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, in grammar, it means that you can choose between two spellings. Like color with an O-U-R or color without an O-U-R. In English you can spell some words two ways.

But what do you think KYI SDUG DAM GAR is? Yeah, you choose. You choose.

You want to be happy or you want to be unhappy. But MA NOR What's NOR? NOR BU means jewel but NOR BA means to make a mistake.

So, MA NOR was don't blow it.

[Speaker 2]
You have a choice. You can use this equipment to become Buddha in this life if you study tantra.

[Speaker 1]
But you don't get to study tantra until you finish the eighteen ACI courses. Very simple. John is teaching tantra but he doesn't teach anyone who doesn't finish eighteen courses.

So, if you want initiation talk to him but don't talk to him if you didn't finish your eighteen courses because he will hit you with the rosary. KYI SDUG GIS DAM GAR MA NOR BYED DGOS You got to make the right choice here.

[Speaker 2]
You got to make the right choice. It's up to you.

[Speaker 1]
No one else can practice Dharma for you. No one can give you one minute of karma.

[Speaker 2]
It's not possible.

[Speaker 1]
If it was possible, you don't have to come to Guadalajara for ten days. I can bring karma to Shanghai. I give everybody five hundred karmas and you cannot do.

DE NAS BCUG NA NI NYIN GZHAG RE NYID KYI SDUN BCUG PA This is actually the next meditation. This BCUG is a ... you don't know this word.

With a different spelling it means cow. And anyone who has a lot of cows is powerful. Yeah, Wangchuk is Ishvara.

Ishvara, very powerful. Here, the BCUG with the S and the apostrophe means to blow it. If you make a mistake in some kind of project you're doing in this life, like you wipe out your computer by accident, or you hit another car and ...

right? Who did that? I'm not supposed to mention it.

You get in a small car accident. You make a mistake driving or you make a mistake on your computer and you wipe out everything. You want to learn how to do that on an iPhone?

Go to settings. Then go down to general. Then go down to reset.

There's about seven ... there's six choices of resets there. If you hit the first one you lose all your music, all your photos, all your emails, everything.

All your WeChat. Okay? It's very easy.

No. Okay? If you're ...

anyway. Some of my friends have done it. Then you lose like one or two days you have to run around and ask everybody, what's your email again?

Do you have a copy of that nice photo we took of Andriana when she was singing I'm Happy?

[Speaker 2]
Do you have a copy of that photo of Andriana when she was singing I'm Happy? You have to try to put back all the stuff you lost.

[Speaker 1]
It takes a couple days. That's NYIN CHAGS RE NYID means one or two days you can fix. You make a ...

you blow something in this world it takes a day or two to fix it. But if you make a mistake in the Dharma ,'KHRID RAB BSTAN GYI SDUG MA CHUG DRO YIN you blow thousands of lifetimes. You waste thousands of lifetimes.

[Speaker 2]
Small mistake.

[Speaker 1]
You know like, oh I don't have time to go to Guadalajara. Somebody told me, I'm watching my dog.

[Speaker 2]
I don't have time to go to Guadalajara.

[Speaker 1]
I have to be nice to everybody. Oh, that's okay. But in my mind, they're going to take like 10,000 births as a dog.

But I can't talk to people like that. They will all run away. So, what it means is, this is a small ...

if I push that button I lose all my contacts. I lose all my music. All the nice messages I got from people.

But if you make a wrong decision about your practice, you can lose thousands of lifetimes. So it's dangerous. CHUG DRO YIN, DE PHYIR LTA LTA PHAN CHE MA ZHI BA DE ZHIN DU LAS DU Actually, we're pretty lucky we didn't die already.

We are wasting our lives so well that we're lucky that up to now we didn't kill ourselves. And many people did. I've had many students die.

We had a guy in New York, I forget his real name, but who was he? Yeah, his name was Sal. And he had two beautiful children.

We used to call him Khyabpa Machung. Khyabpa Machung in debating means not necessarily so. Then every time I say something he sits in the back, he'll say, Khyabpa Machung!

Then we used to call him Khyabpa Machung. He works in the World Trade Center. 15 years ago?

He missed the bus that day. He works on the top floor.

[Speaker 2]
That day he missed the bus and he didn't die.

[Speaker 1]
All his, his whole company died. He's the only survivor. Then he died from cancer two months later.

So, many people go like that. You have to use the equipment when you have it. I think you were there when he died.

Were you there when he died? I was in two year retreat. Okay.

,BDAG NI TSE LHAG MA BLO NYID GSUM SOGS, ,CI TZAM LUS PA'I DE RIGS NA, ,NYIN TZAM BRAL BA DKA' BYAS DE DANG PA'I ,'CHU ZHIG BYA RGYU MA BYUNG NA, So, how much lifetime we have left, we don't know. We don't know how much of Joe's debit card is left. Oh, Geshe-la, I'm young.

She's old. I have time. She doesn't have time.

We had 15 monks in my little monastery in New Jersey. The oldest, they all died. The oldest one died last.

The youngest one died first. Then eventually they all died. There's nobody there left now.

That monastery is empty. So, we don't know.

[Speaker 2]
So, in the time we have left, work hard.

[Speaker 1]
And to be honest, don't waste time on hippie dharma thing. Some weird, you know, there are many lamas teaching weird stuff, useless stuff. Then you don't have time to say, I'm going to go check it out for a year, or something like that.

You have to be very careful how you spend the rest of your time because you don't know how much you have. NYIN TSE BRAL BA So, work hard. PHYIR ZHIG BYA'I YI MA CHUNG NA LA YANG If we don't, if we don't work hard, you should think to yourself, if you don't want to work hard, then he says, are you ready to go to the, are you ready to be an animal again?

Are you ready to be a hungry ghost again? Are you really ready to do that? Because that's the other, hell, to go to hell.

Are you ready? It's like some guys get out of the jail, and they're like, I don't care, I can go back.

[Speaker 2]
But you have to decide.

[Speaker 1]
Either you work hard on your practice, or you say, I'm tough enough to go back to animal. I'm okay with that. I can take being the fish on the bottom of the ocean for another 10,000 years.

It's okay. I'm a pretty tough guy.

[Speaker 2]
I'm a pretty tough guy. I can take being a fish for another 10,000 years on the bottom of the ocean. There's no problem.

[Speaker 1]
RANG RES DA RES LEN GCIG LA RIN PO CHE RIN THANG MED NA MED PA NAS CHOG SKYES SROM PA DANG BRAL BA'I What? It's not me. Who is that?

It's probably Nick.

[Speaker 2]
Probably Nick.

[Speaker 1]
BRAL TE NYES PA'I DI STONG LOG TU MA SONG BA GAL CHE That's kind of cool. Maybe we can learn that one for tomorrow. So it's like you got a jewel.

I was in New York. They were selling at an auction. I was at an auction and there was like a 20 carat diamond.

[Speaker 2]
This big.

[Speaker 1]
It's flawless.

[Speaker 2]
Perfect. So this has no price.

[Speaker 1]
I went to the auction just I want to see who's going to buy it. I want to touch it. And your body is like that diamond.

And it has your body is 18 carats.

[Speaker 2]
What's the 18?

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, 10 and 8, right? We learned it last retreat.

[Speaker 2]
One person was awake that time.

[Speaker 1]
Then BRAL TE NYES PA'I DI STONG LOG TU MA SONG BA GAL CHE Don't waste it. Don't throw it in the garbage. Okay?

You want to hear something funny? Somebody on that day switched the diamond. They brought a glass one.

And they were like you know, I want to see the diamond. And they switched it. They never caught the guy.

But it wasn't me. Otherwise I won't have my old car. DPER NA MI ZHIG RIN PO CHE LING DU LAS PA NAS This is the next picture, okay?

What is that picture? Top of page five. Huh?

It's the first guy to step on the moon. Okay, and I like the picture. It's a cool picture.

I have some hippie friends. They say they didn't go to the moon. They took this picture in a studio with lots of dirt there.

And the mafia took all the money. It's possible I guess. DPER NA MI ZHIG RIN PO CHE LING DU LAS PA NAS DE RIN PO CHE LEN PAR MI BYAS PAR So suppose you go to the Jewel Island.

And don't forget this is Sri Lanka. And as I said before, I did gemstone business there and there's jewels everywhere. And everybody's selling jewels.

So people used to go there from India on wooden ships to ... you just go there, you step out, and you just pick up the diamonds.

[Speaker 2]
And suppose there's a beach in Namibia in Africa covered with diamonds.

[Speaker 1]
Each one is worth like $500,000. And there's some strange river there and for many millions of years it threw diamonds on the beach. And you can just walk down and pick them up.

Then if you risk your life to go there, LUS GAR SOGS KYI DU DE DE and you just dance around and sing ONG YIN MA DI RGA HUNG something like that. You are just singing a song and everybody else is picking up as many diamonds as they can. And you are like, what are you guys doing?

Then you also borrow money from those other guys. Can you loan me $500?

[Speaker 2]
You are standing on diamonds.

[Speaker 1]
And you are like, can you loan me $500? The guy is like, I'll give it to you later. LUS GAR SOGS KYI DU DE DE LUS GAR SOGS KYI DU DE DE MTSONGS PA GZHAN LAS BU LEN MA BO ZHIG LANG THAR DU BU BYED MA LANG NAS Then in the end it's time to go back and what do you have?

You have two things.

[Speaker 2]
You have no diamonds and you have big debts.

[Speaker 1]
Then you are like insane. You went to the place where you can pick up $500,000 diamonds like this. Someday I'll show you I'll show you a photo of the first guys to discover that beach.

There's a photo. It's called the Orange River. But so you went to the place where you it's called Pherboten which means what?

Yeah, it's the forbidden zone. Later the Germans took it over and they shot anybody who went there. But everybody else is all your friends are picking up diamonds you're just like wasting time.

Then they say it's time to go home.

[Speaker 2]
Then you get home all your friends are rich you are broke and you have debt to them.

[Speaker 1]
Is that stupid or not? DE NI MYO BA LAS GZHAN CI ZHIG If that's not crazy, what is crazy? PAS DE BZHIN DU We are the same.

THAR PA DANG THAMS CAD KHYEN PO RIN PO CHE RANG LA THUB LEN CHOG We have a Buddhahood just ready to pick up. SKABS SU DE MI LEN PAR But we didn't take it. LAR NGAN SONG GI RGYUD GRUB NA But everything we are doing hurting other people it's like we are collecting new debt.

After we die we will go down. It's like going home with no diamond and with debt. DE NAS LUS PA'AM GUG LTAG CHE BA MED PA YIN TE There's no bigger cheating yourself.

GUG LTAG, say GUG LTAG. This is a study dictionary entry. This is an important word.

Say GUG LA DKA' THA GZHAG GI GUL KHA SA GUG PA means idiot. And LTAG means RA LTA DKA' THA GZHAG LTAG means, what is LTAG?

[Speaker 2]
LTAG PA GRUB Reason. I disagree with your reason.

[Speaker 1]
So GUG LTAG is a special colloquial expression. It means proof that you are an idiot. Then the Lama always says GUG LTAG MA STE Like, you're an idiot but try not to show it.

If you have a really bad student and you have to meet some intelligent people, you say, just today don't say anything. We're going to be meeting with some Pong Maos today.

[Speaker 2]
I'd appreciate it if you don't say anything.

[Speaker 1]
GUG LTAG MA BSTAN Say GUG LTAG MA BSTAN Please don't display your stupidity. So that's a nice word to use with your friends.

[Speaker 2]
GUG LTAG MA BSTAN Don't show off how stupid you are.

[Speaker 1]
Just keep your mouth shut. So there's no more stupid thing than that. I'm going to just go ahead, okay?

I know you're tired. I'm also tired. It's too warm.

If it was cold we would also be complaining and I want to get through some more of this book, okay? ZHI BA LHA What's ZHI BA LHA? Master Shantideva wrote a great famous book called Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life.

How to be a Bodhisattva. DON DUS BRAL BA GNYIS GYUR NAS Anybody who found a chance like this BDAG GIS DGE SGO'ANG MA BYAS NA If I don't try to be nice to other people DI LAS LUGS PA GZHAN MED TE then I am cheating myself. DI LAS RMONGS PA GZHAN MED DO And there's no more stupid thing than that.

CHES GSUNGS PA BZHIN NO He said that Now comes the next Oh, by the way, why did I put this guy here? Okay, it costs, I don't know, it costs many hundreds of millions of dollars to stand in there for a few hours. And when he gets there he's supposed to pick up some moon rocks and bring them home.

I'm in the diamond business. We also sell other stones. Somebody bought one of these little stones, little moon rock.

It's like, I don't know, like 500 million dollars or something. And suppose he gets there to the moon and he forgets to take he forgets to pick up any rocks. That's why I put him.

Who's the astronaut?

[Speaker 2]
Yeah, I am.

[Speaker 1]
Where's the moon?

[Speaker 2]
This life.

[Speaker 1]
You got here. It took many people, it took Joe thousands of lifetimes to send you here on the spaceship called Rebirth. And then if you just waste your time you're more stupid than this guy.

Next picture.

[Speaker 2]
What's the guy doing?

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, he's drinking coffee. He's doing Tartuk.

[Speaker 2]
He's drinking coffee. He's doing Tartuk.

[Speaker 1]
,DE NA MA THAR BRAL PO PA GANG THUB BA'I YUN LA'ANG, ,SAG SBYANG SOGS KYI GNYIS PO LEN PAS, ,LEN CHOG PA'I RTEN SANGS REN CIG GNYIS PA'I RTI LA, Then even in the time it takes to drink one coffee, do SAG SBYANG. Do SAG SBYANG. Somebody told me they are doing GYOR CHUD every day.

Every morning. I like it. It's one of those three books in one of those three treasure books.

[Speaker 2]
The essence of that book GYOR CHUD is SAG SBYANG.

[Speaker 1]
SAG means make some new good karma. SBYANG here means clean out some old bad karma. So even if you go to Starbucks to drink one coffee, you know, you are relaxing.

[Speaker 2]
You are drinking.

[Speaker 1]
It takes you five minutes to drink the coffee. You know, you can look around and somebody is you say somebody is helping their child or something. Then you can make some very easy quick karma.

Oh look, how beautiful she is taking such good care of her child. We were thinking how they take care of Tara is very cool. They give her some freedom but they are also watching.

Then you can say that's cool. Then you just collected a lot of good karma.

[Speaker 2]
So don't waste the time.

[Speaker 1]
You see somebody arguing with the cashier. Then you can think in your mind, no, I don't like to see that.

[Speaker 2]
I have to clean that karma.

[Speaker 1]
So I'll try not to yell at my boss today.

[Speaker 2]
So in your mind you are doing jor chu. You are doing that practice at Starbucks with your morning coffee and learn not to waste the time.

[Speaker 1]
Don't waste any time. What's the maximum time you can waste? Anything takes less than a cup of coffee you can waste the time, okay?

You can waste the time it takes to do a number one but not the time it takes to do a number two. You know what that means? Yeah, okay?

There's a time limit. Do something useful. People are like, oh Geshe-la you translated I don't know 25,000 pages of Buddhism.

[Speaker 2]
When did you have time to do that?

[Speaker 1]
Then I said, I only did that in the back of the cars or waiting at the dentist office. The time that people waste is all the time I have.

[Speaker 2]
Then use it. Don't go crazy, okay?

[Speaker 1]
Don't be nervous.

[Speaker 2]
Don't be unpleasant to other people.

[Speaker 1]
Your mother says, how are you?

[Speaker 2]
I'm busy, I'm doing my practice.

[Speaker 1]
It's like, I don't want to waste the time. It doesn't mean that. No, I met many people like that.

Many American Buddhists they're like that. They say, you want to have some tea with me? They're like, no, I don't have time.

[Speaker 2]
Why?

[Speaker 1]
I'm doing my meditation. I don't know what kind of meditation you're doing, but I don't want to learn it. It doesn't mean you're wasting time if you're not typing a Dharma book or something like that.

For one thing, you are wasting your time if you're not having fun about your practice. If you feel grumpy or angry or you're wasting time having some problem with somebody, then you're wasting time. It just means everything should be fun practice.

Everything you do all day should be fun practice.

[Speaker 2]
What's the karma of having fun with your practice?

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, you get to be the boss. It's also fun to be the boss. Then if you have fun being the boss, you can be the boss again.

So, it doesn't mean you have to be uptight.

[Speaker 2]
You want to go to a movie? No, I don't want to waste my time.

[Speaker 1]
You know, if you're a Dharma person, what movie do you want to see? Let's go see Martian. Yeah, okay, I will do this meditation during the whole movie.

Like, Dharma person can make everything practice. Then their friend is sitting at home nervous typing some Dharma books.

[Speaker 2]
They are wasting their time.

[Speaker 1]
And the skillful Buddhist went to the Martian movie. They are, the whole movie theater, they are thinking, everyone here is a Buddha. This movie also made by Buddha.

Why that guy wears that big helmet? He's a Buddha, he doesn't want people to see. Then the guy who went to the movie is practicing.

And the guy who stayed home and he's nervous and he's typing some Dharma book, he's not practicing. Okay? Understand?

Okay.

[Speaker 2]
So, don't waste the time it takes to drink one coffee.

[Speaker 1]
Do sak chang.

[Speaker 2]
Make new good karma.

[Speaker 1]
It's easy, like rejoicing is a cheap, easy karma. Oh, that guy is so cool. They look so cool.

Her dress looks so cool.

[Speaker 2]
She must have been patient.

[Speaker 1]
Her Joe must have been patient. Salud.

[Speaker 2]
Cheers.

[Speaker 1]
Congratulations. Okay, like be happy. And then you just sark.

You did sark. Then you see something you don't like. Like the toilet in a New York Starbucks.

Then you can say, oh, I'm sorry I did sexual, I fooled around with other people's partner. Joe, Joe fooled around with somebody else's partner. And so I have to see this New York Starbucks bathroom.

This is where all the drug deals are done, and all the heroin, you know, they are unbelievably dirty. You should complain. You should write a letter to Joe.

Okay. SOGS KYI GNYIS PO LEN CHOG PA'I BSTAN SANGS LEN GCIG NYES PA STI LA RAB NA TSE GCIG LUS GCIG LA SANGS RGYAS PA ZHIG STAM So if you use your time, RAB NA means at the very best, say TSE GCIG Say something.

[Speaker 2]
TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS It's a cool word.

[Speaker 1]
It's tantra.

[Speaker 2]
Tantra word.

[Speaker 1]
So you should learn it. TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS Buddha in one body. I'm sorry.

Buddha in one life, one body. It's like, what do you want to do with your life? I think TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS Before I die.

It means before you die. Usually it takes billions of lifetimes. If you practice tantra, you can do TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS.

One of the most important practices of tantra is to feel like there are buddhas around you. Be suspicious. Be paranoid.

He's wearing a red shirt. Ha! Red shirt.

[Speaker 2]
He's got this bracelet. What's a bracelet?

[Speaker 1]
That's tantra, okay? So, I saved you a lot of time and money. Go to the movie theater.

See the Martian.

[Speaker 2]
Be suspicious of everybody.

[Speaker 1]
How many buddhas in this movie right now? Then some little kid will say, me!

[Speaker 2]
You know?

[Speaker 1]
You know, wah!

[Speaker 2]
So, if you think like that, two things will happen. TSE GCIG LUS GCIG SANG RGYAS And maybe they put you in the mental hospital.

[Speaker 1]
That's okay. There's also gold there under the ground. So, RAB NA means if you don't waste your time, use every five minutes you have.

You don't have to be on your meditation cushion to do GYOR CHU. They don't have a sign outside of Starbucks that says nobody can do GYOR CHU in here. Go home.

Do it on your meditation cushion. There's no rule like that. While you're drinking your coffee, you can do a pretty good meditation session.

And your knees don't hurt.

[Speaker 2]
That's best if you can do Buddhahood in one life.

[Speaker 1]
DE MA CHUNG LA'ANG THAR PA THOB TZAM ZHIG At least, if you don't waste your time, even small five minute times, you can reach nirvana in this life. Who can tell me the difference between Buddhahood and nirvana?

[Speaker 2]
What's nirvana?

[Speaker 1]
Good. They don't know everything. But they stop all their negative emotions.

When I was young, I have, there are four, we are four brothers, no sister. And this brother, I'm this brother, then number three brother, I don't know what his Joe did, but his goal in his life is to make me angry. Then he will go like, he, he, he.

Then if I don't do anything, he will go, he, he, he. Then if I don't do anything, he will go, bang! And then finally I get angry.

So, if the person reaches nirvana, it's impossible to make them angry.

[Speaker 2]
It doesn't matter what you do.

[Speaker 1]
Cut their nose off. They're like, hi. How's that possible?

Anyway, they understand the pen. They understand the pen. That's all.

That's the only way you can reach nirvana. The more you hit a person who understands a pen, the stronger their patience gets. The more you hit a person who doesn't understand the pen, the closer they come to getting angry.

And it's always the case. Khyapa. It's always like that.

[Speaker 2]
If the person doesn't understand that the irritating person coming from them, at some point they will break. The patience will break.

[Speaker 1]
Geshe-la, my mother is so patient. Okay, like, poke her with a needle. She still loves me.

Hit her. She still loves me. Burn down her house.

[Speaker 2]
If you don't understand the pen, at some point your patience will break. If you do understand the pen, the harder it gets, the stronger your patience gets. Somebody's sticking with a pen.

[Speaker 1]
Oh, I have to be careful not to hurt other people.

[Speaker 2]
Pen. Oh, I have to be more careful not to hurt other people. Somebody burned down your house.

[Speaker 1]
I have to be super careful not to hurt other people. The patience just gets higher and higher, stronger and stronger.

[Speaker 2]
So there comes a time when nobody can make you angry.

[Speaker 1]
Even your little brother. Little brothers were designed to ruin your life. DE MA CHUNG NANG MA LTA'I PHYI MA NGAN SONG DE MI BRAL BA ZHIG LA NGES PAR BAS DGOS At least try to make sure that you don't fall down into the hells after you die.

If you use your coffee time well, you will become a Buddha. If you use it kind of okay, you will reach Nirvana.

[Speaker 2]
If you use it at all, you won't go to hell. So use it.

[Speaker 1]
Okay? Use it. Don't waste time.

But also don't be nervous and uptight and unpleasant to other people. Usually new Buddhists are too uptight. People are like, you know, somebody's eating a hot dog, then they're like, you're going to go to hell, you know that.

And nobody likes them. So using every five minutes doesn't mean you are nervous and unpleasant to other people. You are even more cool because you understand everything can be Dharma.

Like, you are, I'm going to use this, I'm drinking a cappuccino today.

[Speaker 2]
I'm going to use this five minutes. Let's see. I think I'll do some rejoicing.

[Speaker 1]
Who's doing something cool in this coffee shop? Then suddenly your friend shows up. You know, you were planning to you were planning to take five.

[Speaker 2]
You were planning to use your five minutes. Then your friend came and interrupted you.

[Speaker 1]
Then use him for the Dharma. Then he's like, did you hear? They're like, there's 24 people.

You're like, in your mind you're like, man, I have to purify this Dharma. Oh, really? Oh, that's very interesting.

In your mind you're thinking, I have to stop wasting other people's time. But don't get angry at them. Oh, they wasted my five minutes.

[Speaker 2]
Nobody can hurt a Buddhist. Nobody can hurt a Buddhist. It's impossible.

There's a vow in Tantra.

[Speaker 1]
If someone hurt your Lama, you're not allowed to hurt them. Oh, sorry, Shantideva. Shantideva.

[Speaker 2]
And you're also not allowed to defend your Lama. You're not allowed to kill someone because they tried to hurt your Lama.

[Speaker 1]
Shantideva said, who do you think your Lama is? My Lama's a Buddha. Okay, so he doesn't need you to defend him.

A Buddha can take care of himself. So we are not allowed to hurt someone who's hurting our Lama. So if you're a real well-educated Buddhist, no one can hurt you and no one can waste your time.

Except except you. Anything happens to you, you can practice.

[Speaker 2]
No one can waste your time.

[Speaker 1]
It's not possible. Okay? Alright.

Last, we have five more minutes.

[Speaker 2]
Let's not waste it.

[Speaker 1]
SDO BSTAN GYI TZIN GYI RGYAL PO LAS There's a sutra called The King of Meditation. It's the source of many of the meditation teachings in Tsongkapa's lineage. Here's Tsongkapa, 1401 or something.

[Speaker 2]
1409, writing Lam Rim Chemo.

[Speaker 1]
Here's the Buddha teaching meditation. Here's Tsongkapa writing about meditation.

[Speaker 2]
Who's the most important Lama between about how to meditate?

[Speaker 1]
So here's TING NGAN TSE GYI RGYAL PO Yeah, here's TING NGAN TSE GYI RGYAL PO King of Meditation Sutra by Lord Buddha.

[Speaker 2]
Here's Tsongkapa teaching it in Lam Rim Chemo.

[Speaker 1]
And then that came to this Lam Rim. But in that in that 2,000 years, who's the most important Lama between them? His name is Kamalashila.

[Speaker 2]
Say Kamala? Shila. Kamalashila.

[Speaker 1]
Okay, so this is the earliest book about meditation by Buddha. The Lam Rim is the best place to learn practical meditation.

[Speaker 2]
That's why the first two years of this course I taught the end of the Lam Rim. How to meditate.

[Speaker 1]
Because we have to use it during the book. Okay, so if you missed the first I don't know, six retreats, that's your problem. This is number 20.

I think we'll do about 50. Inshallah. Inshallah.

Yeah, God willing. This is Muslim word. Inshallah.

You have to go like this, Inshallah. It's a Muslim expression. It means, if God allow us to do.

[Speaker 2]
It means, I hope so.

[Speaker 1]
I like it.

[Speaker 2]
This is retreat number 20.

[Speaker 1]
We will have to do about 50, I'm sorry. Inshallah. I hope we can do.

Okay, so here's the Samadhi Raja Sutra. MEN MANG SANG ZHING PHANGS PA DE LAG NAS SNGA BA MTSOR BA RGYUR BA'I MEN MI MTHUNG Okay, so the person got very sick. And they went to the doctor.

They went to Dr. Yohai. Then Dr. Yohai said, oh yeah, you have very serious cancer. I have the medicine.

He gave me this one. This is the medicine. SANG means this medicine is perfect for your cancer.

And PHANGS PA means this medicine cost me one million dollars.

[Speaker 2]
PHANGS PA means super expensive.

[Speaker 1]
Then he gives to you, to the SNGA BA MTSOR BA RGYUR in order to take care of the sick person. Here's the cure for your disease. Then MEN MI MTHUNG MTHUNG MEN MI MTHUNG Then the guy doesn't take it.

[Speaker 2]
Duh.

[Speaker 1]
My ballet teacher, she taught me many things, but the one I used the most is duh, duh. I'm supposed to put my left foot, right foot, left foot? Duh.

It means yeah, of course. Or that's so stupid. YOH HA'I gives you million dollar medicine to fix your cancer and you're like you don't take it.

SNGA BA MTSOR MEN PA'I MA LEN Is it the doctor's fault if that guy dies? No, he gave him the best medicine. MEN GYI MA NYE STE Is it the medicine's fault?

No, it's good medicine. GNAS PA DE NYID KYI GNYIS NI NYES PA YIN It's the patient's fault. I have so many people come to me, Geshe-la, this meditation is not working for me.

I think I'll go to Nepal and find a new one. Then I'm like, I never say no to my students because they don't listen to me anyway. yeah, that's a good idea.

That's a good idea. Then I'm like, I'm just curious though, how many times a week did you do that meditation? Oh, I didn't have time.

Okay? All the time I hear this. This meditation's not working for me.

Four steps don't work for me. Did you do them? No.

Okay, so it's not that the medicine is a problem. The doctor is a good doctor, but you have to take the medicine. Duh.

DE BZHIN RTEN PA DE LA RAB BYUNG STE So, Dr. Samteng Wangpo Kulrikne, SGOS PA LA NI NGON PAR BRTZON MI BYED RIGS PAR MI BRTZON GALA NYON DANG DAG DE BZHIN RTEN PA DE LA RAB BYUNG STE This is a special ancient expression. It means to to be ordained in the teaching. RAB BYUNG, in the teaching.

But it means you got the teaching.

[Speaker 2]
Or you became a follower of this teaching.

[Speaker 1]
RTOGS DANG BSAM STENG DBANG PO KUL RIGS NAS You learned the powers. You learned the meditation. You learned all the special forces in the body and the mind.

And you didn't meditate. You didn't meditate about them. RIGS PAR MI BRTZON GALA NYON DANG So, why are you surprised you didn't reach nirvana?

Okay, the teacher gave you all those teachings. You didn't do them and then you're unhappy. Okay?

[Speaker 2]
It's not the medicine's fault. And it's not the teacher's fault. You have to take it.

[Speaker 1]
You got the yohai special medicine. Then you have to take it. Okay, there's one more part of that quotation and and then we'll stop.

NGES NI RAB TU SANGS PA'I CHOS SHES KYANG KHYOD KYI MTHON NAS YANG DANG MA BYAS NA GNAS PA MEN GYI RGYAL PA THOB PA THAR BDAG GIS NGES NI SO BAR MI NUS SHING BDAG GIS NGES NI SO BAR MI NUS SHING NGES NI RAB TU SANGS PA'I CHOS SHES KYANG I have taught you a really cool dharma. Who's talking? The Buddha.

This is a sutra. This is Lord Buddha.

[Speaker 2]
I taught you some really cool dharma.

[Speaker 1]
KHYOD KYI MTHON NAS YANG And you heard it from YANG DAG MA BYAS NA But if you don't practice it, GNAS PA MEN GYI RGYAL PA THOB PA THAR You're like a person who went to the store, the Oxxo store, and you got a big garbage bag, those big garbage bags. And the doctor filled it full of medicine for you.

[Speaker 2]
And you're carrying it around. But you never took any.

[Speaker 1]
Geshe-la, I have a cold. Yeah, what's that bag? That's all the medicine people gave me for my cold.

[Speaker 2]
It looks heavy.

[Speaker 1]
Yeah, I've been carrying it around for like two weeks. It's really heavy. So, you know, how did it work?

Oh, I didn't take it. Okay. BDAG GIS GNAS NI SO BAR MI NUS SHING I can't help you.

I can't help somebody like that.

[Speaker 2]
Who's talking?

[Speaker 1]
Buddha.

[Speaker 2]
Even Buddha cannot help you. Even if Buddha come here and teach you, many, many things, and then you don't do any of them.

[Speaker 1]
If this little book gets lost on China airplane in the bathroom, or it reaches your shelf in your home, if it becomes something to protect the wood of the shelf from dust, I know, I saw many ACI course books protecting shelves. Then, okay, then you wasted your time. And Buddha says, don't blame me.

[Speaker 2]
Okay, I tried. MI NUS, what's MI NUS mean?

[Speaker 1]
No, what's MI NUS?

[Speaker 2]
NUS PA I can't help you.

[Speaker 1]
I'm sorry I can't help you. If you don't do anything I ask you to do, take five. Take five.

Take five. Download this app. I'm going to stand in the parking lot on the last day.

You cannot get out of the gate unless you have this app on your...

[Speaker 2]
By the way, we should make our own app, okay?

[Speaker 1]
It's really cool, but the meditations are stupid.

[Speaker 2]
Oops.

[Speaker 1]
Okay, I want to see it on your iPhone, okay?

[Speaker 2]
Can you repeat the name of the app?

[Speaker 1]
It's called, he's scared. He said, what's the name of the app? He's afraid he won't be able to go home.

Insight timer. You can probably show it. They'll show it.

Okay? And these two things can save your life. Then you have everything.

[Speaker 2]
Just these two things.

[Speaker 1]
I don't have time to meditate.

[Speaker 2]
Come on, it's five minutes. Did you have time to pee pee today?

[Speaker 1]
Yes, but that was necessary.

[Speaker 2]
This not necessary?

[Speaker 1]
Maybe hold the pee pee for two hours and do a few of these.

[Speaker 2]
Okay? This is more important.

[Speaker 1]
This everything, that's all you need. You don't even have to read it. You can just look at the pictures.

Geshe-la, I made a mistake. When I went home to Guadalajara, I found out I took the Chinese reading. That's why I put the photograph.

You don't need the reading. It's 24 photographs. It's supposed to trigger the memory.

Even in the morning before you drink your coffee.

[Speaker 2]
Like that.

[Speaker 1]
You can see the picture.

[Speaker 2]
Even you can't read it.

[Speaker 1]
Then five minutes.

[Speaker 2]
Anybody can do five minutes. Come on. Okay?

[Speaker 1]
Alright.

[Speaker 2]
Last thing.

[Speaker 1]
Ultima cosa. Why did that jazz guy die two days ago? Me and Yohai are thinking, hey, do you want to play a cool song together?

What song do you want to play? That guy just died, you know. Let's play his most famous song.

Take five. My last question. If you answer correct, you get to go to bed.

Is it a coincidence that his song's name is the same name as the meditations you are doing this week? In sutra, sutra means open Buddhism. Not secret.

We say, oh, it's just coincidence Geshe Michael. In tantra, we say sixty-three years ago, he wrote that song because he knew we will be having a retreat in Amitit...

[Speaker 2]
in tequila this week.

[Speaker 1]
Understand?

[Speaker 2]
That's tantra thinking.

[Speaker 1]
Because he named the song take five. So, a tantra person never wastes, cannot waste their time. Everything is suspicious.

Oh, that musician. Obviously he's Buddha. Obviously he wrote the song for the 100 Buddhists in tequila in 2015.

[Speaker 2]
Okay?

[Speaker 1]
Understand? That's tantra. Okay?

[Speaker 2]
Don't forget. First level tantra. Geshe-la, what's the second level tantra?

Later.
