[Говорящий 1] (0:00 - 3:27)
All right, di tsam mandel bulwar. You okay, Ming? di tsam mandel bulwar means in the seven parts practice, we did prostration and we did offering, and it's a custom at this time to do the mandala offering.

In Tibet, they shorten the Indian word. They just say mandal, mandal. And again, it's related to the Spanish word mundo, because we are offering the whole world, and a perfect world.

I think there should be a new thing where you go like this, and these are the lines of people waiting outside the nursing homes. Because that's what we're supposed to think. Because of our hard work, all of us teaching around the world, then it will become a happy world, a perfect world.

Everybody waiting outside the nursing homes. They will tell you she's busy, you come back next week. It will be harder to see an old person than to get a plumber or electrician.

All right. DI MTSAMS MANG PO BO BA'I DE NYUR DANG BYAMS PA'I ZHES LUNG MI ZHA So the DE LAM, NYUR LAM, BYAMS PA'I ZHES LUNG, these are three great lamrim traditions. DE LAM, NYUR LAM, BYAMS PA'I ZHES LUNG These are three great traditions of the lamrim.

And lamrim, you know, it means the steps of the path. The parts of the engine. And we need each part.

And we go one by one. So if somebody says, my teacher, my first teacher in India told me, you should know what you are studying. Maybe somebody will ask you, what are you studying?

Then you have to say lamrim.

[Говорящий 2] (3:29 - 3:31)
Steps of the path.

[Говорящий 1] (3:32 - 5:02)
BYAMS PA'I ZHES LUNG MI ZHA So, where do you start offering the mandala? The three traditions are a little bit different. DE LAM means the path to bliss.

NYUR LAM means quick path. BYAMS PA'I ZHES LUNG means the word of Manjushri. And these are three different lamrim traditions.

But where they tell you to offer the mandala is a little bit different. DE NYUR LAM MUNG DU CHOS PA BU NAS BYAS MANG DAL BU The quick path and the path to bliss, they say, first you should do the offerings to your teacher, and then you should offer the mandala. ZHES LUNG KHAB LAM MA SOGS LA BUL BA'I BUL BA'I CHAGS LEN GZHAN MNGON LA MA LTA BU NAS BYAS SU CHOS PA BU BA YIN GSUM Then in the word of Manjushri, the third lamrim, they say, because all of this relates to your teacher, normally you offer the third lamrim.

[Говорящий 2] (5:02 - 5:12)
You offer the mandala to your teacher first, and then afterwards you do the other offerings.

[Говорящий 1] (5:13 - 5:42)
Then this book doesn't tell you how to do the mandala step by step. There are three different traditions of this mandala, which I did today. The long one is called 37, the 37.

You can use rice.

[Говорящий 2] (5:43 - 5:51)
I have a lot of rice here. You can use barley.

[Говорящий 1] (5:54 - 11:32)
But you put 37 little piles, and each one has meaning. And then there's a shorter version, it's 25 piles. And there's 23 also.

So I thought it's better we have two separate classes to teach you how to do the 37 or the 25. So I asked Venerable Phil and Venerable Jigme, they will have separate classes on how to do this 37 piles, and what they mean. We covered the meaning in great detail in the sadhana section of the tantric course at Diamond Mountain.

For example, the seven precious objects, they all have a big meaning that relates to Aryas. And then we'll talk about that. All right.

MANDAL SHES PA PHOS SKAD DU So when the Tibetans, they have two words for mandala. One is mandal. And one is kinkor.

Please say kinkor. Kinkor. So those of you who are learning Tibetan, the kor is prenasal, which is unusual for a second column, almost impossible.

So we say, it should be kil kor, but it's kinkor. Then kil, he wants to explain that word. What does kil mean?

What does kor mean? Then kil means the essence or the middle of something. In Tibetan that's nyingpo, nyingpo.

That's why we call Venerable Nyingpo, nyingpo, because he's the essence of our work. Kor here means to take. So kinkor means to take the essence.

Then he says, ko gyu chenpo shik yu ko gyu chenpo shik yu It means, that has a big meaning. But he doesn't tell us what it is. So I put it on your homework.

You have to figure it out. Maybe in your discussion groups. Why does making the world perfect with long lines in the nursing home, why does that connect to taking the essence?

By the way, you guys can just start passing them. They can hand them to other person. This is not just Mexican coffee.

This is a blessing. From Starbucks. Okay.

mandok gi yip la mandok gi yip la means what should be the shape of this special world? What should be the shape of our mandala? Then le tun means it depends on it depends on what kind of ritual you are doing.

There's a shi, gye, wang, ta shi, gye, wang, ta Say, shi, gye, wang, ta We finished those four. We finished those four. It was about a mother.

How to act with the children. So Jessica has two good boys, nice boys. Sometimes you have to be nice to them.

Please clean up your room. Gye, that's shi. Gye means if you clean up your room, we will go to a movie.

[Говорящий 2] (11:32 - 11:36)
Si limpias tu cuarto, te voy a llevar a una pelicula.

[Говорящий 1] (11:36 - 11:46)
That new movie with all those guapo guys and girls. How yoga works.

[Говорящий 2] (11:47 - 11:49)
How yoga works, la pelicula.

[Говорящий 1] (11:49 - 12:08)
Shi, gye, wang means clean up your room. You have to show a little bit ta. Tak means fierce.

Maybe you have to hit them on the bottom.

[Говорящий 2] (12:08 - 12:09)
Clean up the room.

[Говорящий 1] (12:12 - 12:21)
And every parent needs these three. Four, sorry. And every teacher needs them also.

[Говорящий 2] (12:24 - 12:30)
My dream is each of you becomes a teacher.

[Говорящий 1] (12:31 - 16:25)
Then you will need those four. Depending on how you treated your teacher. Shi, gye, wang, tak So the mandala shape.

In tantra, it depends on which of those four modes you are in. So le tung here means depends on the work. Here le means work.

Tru shi means you can also make it square, like on the cover of the Diamond Cutter book, the English. Sok che du rung means if you are in a different mode, you can follow that mode in how you put the rice, and things like that. Kha she kyi nang gi nam shak le, chi chupa tso mi che ser yang So some people say, look, I'm a big meditator.

I do all my work inside in the mind. I don't need to have some pile of rice, and putting these piles. I do everything inside my mind.

But he says, the fifty verses about how to behave with your lama, which is very, very famous. It's one of the oldest Buddhist books. And it's the highest book on tantra.

It says, khying kor me tok che teng mu dunpa lama nyen kor shing With your own hands, take the petals of the flowers, and every morning make a mandala to your teacher. So in the old days, we didn't use rice. This is for lazy people, rice.

In the old days you have to go, I used to do it in India, you have to go out to the rose gardens at dawn. Pick the rose petals, which belong to you, and then you take a big platter like this, and you offer your teacher. The piles are made of rose petals.

That's a lot of fun. Sometimes we did it in New York, we used to do it for fun sometimes. We bought everybody one gold platter, but it was plastic gold.

And we got some big bags of rose petals. It was a lot of fun. We practiced to do the 37 piles with roses.

So therefore, don't think that the external ritual is something you don't need.

[Говорящий 2] (16:32 - 16:50)
It's true that some people get all caught up in the external ritual, and they forget the meaning. But if you can do both, that's more powerful.

[Говорящий 1] (16:51 - 21:27)
External ritual, and inside good meditation at the same time. NYAMS SBYOR DBANG CHUG SPYANG LDAN BSGOM PA BA NYIN GCIG STING NGE BRDZIN LA BYAMS NAS MANG DAL BU RGYU LUS TE So there was a great hippie lama from early Tibet. I think Nick probably introduced him to you.

BSGOM PA BA He's on that painting. One day he was having a really good meditation. The word they use here for having a good meditation, those of you who are learning Tibetan, I think it's interesting, it's BYAMS. NYAMS Related to the word for peace, right?

BYAMS PA MA'I PHRAD So he was BYAMS in his meditation, and RGYU LUS TE means he decided to, I'm having such a good meditation, let's skip the mandala thing today. DUL PHUNG NAS YOD PAS SKABS And then that meditation went on for days. Then his mandala kit got dust on it.

Then DROM RIN PO CHE PAS TE Then DROM TUN BYED came to his room. DROM TUN BYED is the main disciple of Lord Atisha. Atisha is one of the great lamas who brought Buddhism to Tibet.

He taught the hippie lamas. So his main disciple came to Gompawa's room. Then he said, SKYER MANG DANG MI'I BU BA'I PHYI YIN SEMS Why the hell aren't you offering the mandala?

Why does it have dust on it? NANG DU'ANG CIG BSAM PA'I YANG BRTZAL ZHUG My meditation was so intense I didn't want to get distracted. DROM GYI GZHAN LAS DROM SEMS SKYER CI ZER Who are you?

SKYER LAS ATISHA GOM SANG STE You think Atisha doesn't have good meditation? He's like a million times better than your meditation. NYIN RER DU GSUM DU BU'A RTZAD He offers mandala three times a day.

RKA' KHYUN means he, what do you call him? Criticized him. NAL SBYOR PA'I DE NAS SU MANG DAL BU BA LA And then from that day on, from that day, Gunpawa offered one every day.

LHAG PA DU TSUN He worked at making good mandalas. RTOG PA CHUNG And then he got high realizations came to him. MANG DAL GYI RGYUD NI YOD NA ZER NGU SANG SOGS DANG MA CHUNG NA DO YANG KHYO MO SHING GI RGYANG ROL If you have enough bucks, you can order a silver metal plate to offer the mandala.

By the way, you can order those things online, right Jigme? I like them, like a metal one is nice. It should have two rings, a plate, and that little thing on the top, they're called tok.

[Говорящий 2] (21:27 - 21:34)
So if you have the money you can make it out of gold.

[Говорящий 1] (21:36 - 27:57)
If you don't have, you can use silver, or sang means brass or copper. When I met my teacher I didn't have any money, not much money. Then I said, I don't have enough money to buy a mandala plate.

So he gave me some refugee plate for cooking. It's a little pan for cooking. I used that for 25 years, I think.

I don't know where it is now. Anyway, ma jung na doyam gyelmo shing If you don't have a lot of money, you can go on the mountain and find a flat piece of stone. In English doyam means slate or shale, flat stone.

Or gyelmo shing means you can even use a piece of wood. Kyang lung, doesn't matter. ulga la yupe je mandala yang dol yin So when Je Tsongkapa was offering mandalas in retreat at the place called ulga, he also used a piece of stone.

Tsongpo'ang rab rimpo che dang dru men, de men dru dang che ma sok gi rung yang, jor na kang sangwa pul wey tsok tsok sak che Tsongpo, those of you who are learning Tibetan, tsongpo is a specific word that means those little piles. So he says, best if you can use gemstones. If you don't have the money, then rice or barley or wheat is okay.

He says that's a medium. Jewels are best. Then medium is grain.

Then if you don't have grain, you can use dust or you can use little pebbles or any sand. Yang. Yang means but.

If you have enough money, put the nicest thing you can. A lot of Tibetan people, they will use rice. But if they get one jewel or one nice coin or something, they will throw that in there together.

Chinese coins are very beautiful. I keep them in there. If you spend as much of your own money as you can, that's higher karma, actually.

Okay. CHE CHUNG NI GANG CHE CHE ZHIG STE, MA THA RANG GI RGA PO LAS MA CHUNG BA DGOS How big should the plate be? He says the bigger is the better.

But it shouldn't be smaller than your purpa. Purpa means every monk has a small bowl like this. Then in the monastery they don't have paper cups.

Every monk has to bring the bowl to the meeting. And that's where you get your food and your tea. If you don't bring your bowl, you don't get anything.

Usually in Tibet the bowl is about this big, made of wood. One time I went to Sri Lanka on business to buy gemstones. Because this is called Ratna Dvipa.

Rinchen Ling means the Island of Jewels. And there's some strange geography about Sri Lanka, but everywhere there are jewels. On the ground you can see crystal everywhere.

So my friend, a diamond dealer, he said, you know, why don't you go have a meal with the monks one day? So I did. I went to have the ...

You know, they go from door to door with the bowl. I know some guy in America, he tried that. He almost starved to death.

But in Sri Lanka, everyone knows and they will give you food in the morning. Their bowl is this big. And it's deep.

Then you go to the house. Then they throw in all of this stuff. Then some people ask me, why do Tibetan monks eat meat?

[Говорящий 2] (27:57 - 27:58)
Some of them.

[Говорящий 1] (28:01 - 31:00)
The old custom, you're supposed to eat whatever they put in your bowl. You're not supposed to say, I like the french fries, I don't like the hamburger. You're supposed to gracefully accept what they give you and eat it, even if you don't want to.

So anyway, for me, they did like that, hamburgers. Then, almost can't carry it. Then they say, wait, one thing I have to go get.

They come out, put ice cream cone on the top. So anyway, your mandala plate shouldn't be smaller than your eating plate. So, at least once a year, and maybe once a month, you should recharge the plate.

The translation I think was a mistake or something. Then, how do you recharge the plate? You spread some beautiful fragrant thing on the top.

Then, those of you learning Tibetan, the next few words are very difficult. Pachung. Say pachung.

Pachung means, in India many hundreds of years ago, they didn't have chemical cleaners. And when I studied in India, they used natural things to clean. So, you can use ash from the fire, or sand, instead of dishwashing detergent.

It works fine. Then they have one natural cleaner called pachung. Pachung means cow poop.

And you mix some other things also. But it's actually antiseptic.

[Говорящий 2] (31:00 - 31:10)
It's an antiseptic. And in India, ancient times, they used it to clean the house.

[Говорящий 1] (31:11 - 33:03)
I used to take care of some old Mongolian monks. They came to America. I used to take care of them.

One of them got diabetes. So, every morning I have to give him his shot. But he got gangrene, which will kill you.

It will always kill you. If you don't use antibiotics, it will kill you. It will spread and it will kill you.

It has to. So, the doctor came and said he has to take antibiotics. And he refused.

Then the doctor said, we have to cut off your foot, otherwise you will die. And he said, I have a better method. Better way.

Then he got some horse poop. Every day he put it on the gangrene. He lived about 25 years after that.

Gangrene went away. So, I'm not suggesting you do it, okay? But in India, cow poop is considered a very clean thing.

So, you can use that or you can use ... chi sang means you put some water and you take some, what do you call, saffron. From Spain is the best one.

[Говорящий 2] (33:05 - 33:06)
But expensive.

[Говорящий 1] (33:07 - 34:12)
Then you drop a few pieces in the water. Water should be warm. Then you leave it overnight and it will get a very beautiful smell.

Then you take some of the water like this and you put it on the plate, in the middle. So, that's the big mountain, right? In the middle is here.

Then you can go like this, around it, with the thumb and the third finger. And you draw a line with the saffron water. Or you can put the third finger here and draw the line with the thumb.

It represents the whole world. Middle of the world and the edge of the world.

[Говорящий 2] (34:18 - 34:21)
And you recharge the plate.

[Говорящий 1] (34:21 - 34:51)
Make it pure. Okay. It means you are covering the whole world.

And you are not just offering your own country. You're offering all countries. We'll do one more little piece and then we'll take a break.

Maybe you don't need a break.

[Говорящий 2] (34:51 - 34:56)
You've got coffee meditation, right?

[Говорящий 1] (34:56 - 40:01)
I'll do one more piece and then we'll have a presentation from Guangzhou. We keep saying Guangzhou, Guangzhou, right? Then maybe many people don't know what is Guangzhou.

So, you know Hong Kong. Then outside of Hong Kong, north towards China, there's a special area. Two big cities.

One is Guangzhou, one is Shenzhen. Shenzhen didn't exist 30 years ago. It was empty fields.

And then the Chinese government, who was the... Deng Xiaoping, Deng Xiaoping, one of the leaders of Chinese government, he said, let's make special economic zone. And we will try to produce new things for people.

I think Shenzhen now has 12 million people, bigger than New York. Guangzhou is bigger than Shenzhen. And in those two cities, I think they make about maybe over 50% of the things in the world.

So the carpet, or the notebooks, or the parts for computers, they are making in those two cities. Maybe half in the world are made there. So those people are really, what do you call?

Fuerte. They are strong people. And they work really hard.

In the Dharma also. There's a joke about Guangzhou. If you move to Guangzhou, and you don't become millionaire in one year, then you must be a stupid person.

I'm thinking to go there and stay for 13 months. The Dharma group there is fantastic. So they will give a presentation.

Let me finish one little piece. DUL TSUL, how do you offer this mandala? First, grab some rice with your left hand.

If you are left-handed, you can grab the rice with the other hand. You don't hold the plate with the empty hand. That's bad luck.

So you put some rice in your hand, then you hold the plate. YES PAS LAG NAR LAG NAR means this forearm. Then you are supposed to rub the plate like this.

Many times. Then there's a very cool yoga explanation of that. Because here is a ching mai, right?

And something will happen to your mind if you rub here. Because of the chi, the prana. So Venerable Phil is going to talk about that.

When he teaches it. Oh, okay, you already talked about it. Oh, you already did that class?

I'm sorry. So anyway, it's supposed to give you clairvoyance. You can read other people's minds.

Sometimes it's a little upsetting. But when you rub outside, you think, I'm getting rid of my bad karma, bad seeds. Then three times go in like this.

[Говорящий 2] (40:04 - 40:12)
And that means, I want to act like a Buddha.

[Говорящий 1] (40:12 - 41:28)
I want to speak like a Buddha. And I want to think like a Buddha. So you do three times.

Then you start to put the piles. But I just want to get you ready for tonight. There will be a special ceremony.

We call Sojong. Sojong means clean out the old bad seeds. And we do twice a month usually.

Very beautiful ceremony in the monastery. They pick the young monk with the best voice, like the Vienna Boy's Choir. He will be some young monk.

CHO CHEN NA ZHUGS PA'I SANGS RGYAS DANG BYANG CHUB SEMS PA BRTZAN NUS KYANG RGYAS RNAMS BRTZAN RNAMS BDAG LA DGOS DU GSOL DAG He just starts it like that.

[Говорящий 2] (41:28 - 41:31)
Then we do Sojong together.

[Говорящий 1] (41:33 - 41:51)
So you have a job today before the ceremony. You should write down on three pieces of paper three things in your life, three bad seeds you want to get rid of.

[Говорящий 2] (41:57 - 42:16)
It could be old bad seeds, it could be new bad seeds. Then three other pieces of paper, write down the three best things you did in your life.

[Говорящий 1] (42:16 - 42:21)
So, we have to... Okay, short story.

[Говорящий 2] (42:27 - 42:36)
One day my Lama got a call, phone call from a Catholic Church, local Catholic Church.

[Говорящий 1] (42:38 - 43:59)
Then they said, the Pope issued an announcement. All the churches should invite other religion people to come. Then they should talk about their religion.

So, can your Lama come to talk at the Catholic Church? Then he said, con placer, right? With pleasure.

Then we went together. I'm his driver. Then we are walking down the middle of this big cathedral.

The priest is showing, oh look at the windows, very color. My Lama was very impressed. Then there was, on this side, there was a small special room.

One priest came into that room. From one door.

[Говорящий 2] (44:02 - 44:09)
Then from the other door, a beautiful lady went in.

[Говорящий 1] (44:10 - 45:14)
My Lama asked the priest, what are they doing there? Then he said, don't worry, don't worry. The lady will tell the bad thing which she did this week.

There's a wall between them. Special window. Then the priest will listen to what she did wrong.

Then he will give her some, to do Hail Mary, Hail Mary, to clean the bad seed. Then my teacher said, that's excellent. It's a mantra, mantra.

Very good for cleaning bad seeds. Then he asked the priest, where's the other room?

[Говорящий 2] (45:17 - 45:19)
On the other side.

[Говорящий 1] (45:20 - 46:19)
Then the priest said, what's the other room? Then my Lama said, you know, the priest should go and the lady should go. The lady should tell the priest all the good things she did this week.

Then the priest said, we don't have that. But it's a good idea. So, in the Sojong, three mistakes you made, three good things you did.

Then we will, don't put your name, okay? We will put them in a big bag. Then we will pick one each.

We will do all together, the good and the bad, okay Nick?

[Говорящий 2] (46:21 - 46:32)
Because we have so many people. Then we will take the bag out, you pick one out, and you will read it for the other person.

[Говорящий 1] (46:34 - 46:56)
If it's a bad thing, we will all pray for the person. If it's a good thing, we will all celebrate. And then after that, we will burn them in the fire.

If it's okay with Don Jesus, we have to ask him. If not, we can make another fire.

[Говорящий 2] (46:59 - 47:01)
It's okay. They do that all the time.

[Говорящий 1] (47:05 - 47:25)
That's all. So, think today, a whole day, think about your six things. Get them ready.

Paper can be about this big. Then before that Sojong, we recite Heart Sutra. Heart Sutra.

[Говорящий 2] (47:25 - 47:32)
Then I'd like to ask all the Chinese speakers.

[Говорящий 1] (47:36 - 48:01)
I will also join you. We will sit there in the beginning, and we will sing the Heart Sutra. Okay, like that, in Chinese.

We can find on the internet. Okay?
