[Говорящий 1] (0:00 - 2:46) Okay, we'll start. Yesterday was the... I have many friends from China. And I think yesterday was the first day they saw me as a monk. Because when I travel for DCI, oftentimes I just wear a business suit or something like that. So tonight I just wore a sweater. Because I want to talk about that, a little bit. When we go to some other countries, we have to check what is their background, what is their history. If you go to China to teach, you should talk about Ging Kang Jing. If you come to Guadalajara and you talk to a big group in a theater, maybe you should talk about the Bible. If you go to a yoga conference, you should talk about yoga. If you go to the basement in Paris, you should play jazz also. For this wisdom to spread in the world, you have to judge who is your audience. So I want you to become teachers. This is a 10-day teacher training. If I give a talk in, I don't know, Singapore, 1,000 people will come. Then maybe from those 1,000 people, 20 people want to study Buddhism. Or 50 people, maybe 50. Then there are special people. There will be a teacher. Those special people, I can teach all of the details. Then you are special people like that. Who came here for 10 days, you are like that. I collected you from around the world. [Говорящий 2] (2:48 - 2:51) I am collecting you from around the world. [Говорящий 1] (2:54 - 5:31) So you are getting the detail, the full explanation of these teachings. And the things that you hear in a DCI talk, you will hear many of them here this week. For example, I say, you can have 10% of another person's karma if you are happy about what they are doing. People ask me, why not 9%? Why not 11%? I said, it's not my idea. It's in the Buddha's head. Buddha's head. Then you can, this week you will hear that, we will reach that place. So you are hearing the deeper explanations. But when you teach, you also should decide who do you want to teach tonight. You should know how to teach Niguma yoga. Some people want yoga. Then you should know how to teach this 10 day course, 9 day, 10 day course. And then you should know how to go to a theater and talk about Jesus in Tibet. And you should know how to put on business suit and talk about Diamond Cutter Institute, business success. Then don't take the wrong teaching to the wrong people. Don't get up 4,000 people and tell them the 15 kind of Buddhist idea. It's not going to work. Also, I don't care if anyone thinks it's Buddhism or not, I don't care. Your job is not to teach Buddhism. Your job is not to teach yoga. Not to teach business. [Говорящий 2] (5:35 - 5:37) Your job is to make people happy. [Говорящий 1] (5:37 - 6:55) Teach them how to be happy. If you have to teach from Bible, okay, teach from Bible. The goal is to make people happy. It's not to spread this ism or that ism or this ism. So, you should have a tool kit. Many tools. I used to work for a carpenter, many years. Then you have to have many tools. A good carpenter will teach you. The first rule of carpentry is you bring the right tools. You should have yoga tools. You should have Buddhism tools. You should have ching kang ching tools. You should have Bible tools. You should have all these tools. Then when you see the people, you look at the people, it's like a carpentry job. [Говорящий 2] (6:55 - 6:57) It's like a carpenter's job. [Говорящий 1] (6:58 - 7:27) Which hammer is better for Jeff Eddy's head? Oh, that one's a little bit hard. I need a big hammer. I need mind teaching for him. You know, like that. So, I encourage you to learn many systems. Learn how to teach ching kang ching in many ways. Diamond cutter. Ching kang ching means diamond cutter. [Говорящий 2] (7:33 - 7:39) Get many tools to help other people. [Говорящий 1] (7:41 - 7:46) Don't be attached to one. Which is the real Geshe Michael? [Говорящий 2] (7:48 - 7:50) The monk? The yogi? [Говорящий 1] (7:51 - 9:09) The businessman? Sometimes I worry about it. Which one is real? They are all real. This is not more real than DCI program in Guangzhou. This is the same. If I wear a business suit or I wear rungs, it's the same. The meaning is the same. How can I make people happy? Give them a successful, happy life. So, I encourage you, you should teach. Aisha, I remember, she sent me a photograph. She gave a talk to some business conference in Mexico City. Then I downloaded the photograph and I, where is Aisha? Oh, there is one lady in a very beautiful business suit. Ah, now she understands. [Говорящий 2] (9:12 - 9:15) The teaching is the same. [Говорящий 1] (9:17 - 9:21) What you want, you have to help other people. [Говорящий 2] (9:24 - 9:27) This will bring peace to the world. [Говорящий 1] (9:27 - 9:51) This is how you dress. You should dress for that audience. Then it will help more people and it will last a long time in this world because the world changes every year. The teacher has to change every year. [Говорящий 2] (9:53 - 9:57) Teaching is the same. The meaning is the same. [Говорящий 1] (9:58 - 11:21) You shouldn't wear 1960s haircuts in 2012, 13. No, I mean, you should change to the modern people. All right, let's begin. Okay, all right, here we go. GYOR CHOS BSLAB PA NI means now we begin the real fifth preparation. Then we had a quotation from Geshe Dolpa. He said three main things before you meditate. Make some good new karma. Kill some bad karma. And what's the third one? Ask teacher for help. I'm going to meditate. Please help me. Okay. DE NAS GDUG PA YIN LA BDUN MED NA DANG BYAS PA'I DE'I THOG MTHAG KUN DU GAL CHE Therefore it's very important. [Говорящий 2] (11:25 - 11:26) Crucial point. [Говорящий 1] (11:26 - 12:11) All of those three things are complete in the seven part practice. So there's what we call seven part practice. Then they say MANG DAL DANG BYAS PA Say MANG DAL DANG BYAS PA DANG BYAS PA Along with offering the mandala. MANG DAL means mandala. So now we start seven practices which is all part of number five in the six preparations for meditation before you start the first lam rim. [Говорящий 2] (12:11 - 12:14) But that's another story. [Говорящий 1] (12:14 - 17:43) KA'I PHYIR KYI DGE SBYOR RGYAL CHEN PO MI NUS PAS CHA RGYU'AM DGE SBYOR GYI MNGON DRO LTA BU LAS NGOS SHI LA MI KHOR BA NYAM DU So some people say I don't need those things like this mandala. I'm a big yogi. I don't need to do all these seven steps. Those are for beginners. I'm a big meditator. I don't need to do all these things. Just washing who? Those are for people who cannot do bigger things. Or those are like just small preparations. These are not the main practice. Washing somebody is not real Buddhism. This is just some little thing. NANG CHUNG For those of you studying Tibetan there's a very unusual colloquial expression called DO NANG DO NANG means to pay to have an interest to be interested. So you will never see it written down but here it's written down. So NANG CHUNG means they don't think this is very interesting. Okay, I don't want to learn to wash some person who's not there. I want to see a golden light in my head. Teach me something more profound. He said that's a mistake to think like that is a mistake. BRTEN DAG MIN means that's not the way it is. YEN NA SDUG PA'I DI SGO NAS TSOR GYI ZHING CHOG LAMA RGYAL BA SRED DANG BYAS PA LA TSOR SOGS DANG GYUR CUNG GZUGS KYI LAS AA PA RTOG DANG RGYUD TE GANG NA'ANG LAS There is no teaching in the world sutra or tantra, open or secret for collecting good karma and removing bad karma then the seven steps which you are going to learn now. SNGAGS KYI SKABS SLONG YIN LA SDUG PA'I DI GAL CHE STE Even in tantra, tantra means a secret teaching you have to have permission to study those teachings. My students, usually I ask them to study for seven years before I will teach them that. So even in the secret teachings SNGAGS KYI SKABS SLONG YIN LA SDUG PA'I DI GAL CHE STE these same seven steps are in the secret teachings. RGYU DE ZHIG PA NAS DON NAM DAG CHA BAR GSUNG ZHING There are four classes of tantra. There are four groups of secret teachings. CHA RGYU CHOS RGYU NYAMS SBYOR GYI RGYU NYAMS SBYOR LA MED KYI RGYU These are the four classes of secret teachings. In all of them we do the same seven steps. They're not called YAN LAG BDUN in secret teachings. They're not called the seven branches. They are called DON NAM DAG which means the pure seven practices. KHO NYOS SU NA DAG SKYE PHYIR DI PA DANG LAS SOGS SOGS SHAG SDUG BSNGAL DGE LA JI'I RANG SANGS RGYAS BYANG CHUB YI RGYI SEMS SANGS RGYAS CHOS RANG SOGS CHOG LA BYANG CHUB PA DU LTAR SKYE PHYIR RANG BZHIN DU NYID LA DUS SPYIR BYANG CHUB SEMS NYID DGE BAR GYI BYANG CHUB CHOG GI SEMS NYID RGYAS GYIS NAS SEMS CAN DANG GYI BDAG GIS BSDUG PA BYANG CHUB CHOG YI DBANG CHUB PAR GYI RDO LA BSTAN CHOS SANGS RGYAS DUS PA SO So these are the seven in the secret teachings. Probably all of you remember it from the sadhana. LAM MED KYI KHYER RIM NAM SU YANG SOGS SHING LA CHAGS CHOS SOGS YANG LA BDUN GYI GONG NAS SO SABS GYUR CHAN BYAR DGOS PAR GSUNGS In the highest tantra in the first half of that practice it's called KHYER RIM I'll give you a short explanation of KHYER RIM. KHYER RIM means there are two parts of tantra, two parts of secret teachings. First part, you try to make contact with angels, with enlightened beings, real ones. [Говорящий 2] (17:47 - 17:57) And in SOGS RIM, part two, they teach you how to turn into them. [Говорящий 1] (17:58 - 19:34) And in the first part of tantra you have to be watching on the bus, on the airplane. There are always one or two angels on the airplane, you have to find them. That's like a special assignment. I think it's always the lady who goes in the bathroom and locks the door and stays there for one hour. Maybe she is cleaning her wings, I don't know. But even in the two stages of tantra, he says here, he was a great master of tantra. All of our tantra study comes from him. He said, look, even in tantra you have to do the seven steps. And I pulled out the seven steps for you from the tantra. But that's secret. But briefly I'll tell you the seven for tantra. We sing them in the monastery. [Говорящий 2] (19:39 - 19:52) First one is look for help in the right place. [Говорящий 1] (19:54 - 20:16) It means, let's say I have a problem with my husband or something like that. Then I can go to this Buddha statue and I can say, oh, I need help. [Говорящий 2] (20:16 - 20:23) I have a problem with my husband. [Говорящий 1] (20:25 - 20:41) That's the lower way to ask for help. Then the higher way to ask for help is use the four steps shimbaka four steps. [Говорящий 2] (20:42 - 20:44) shimbaka means Starbucks. [Говорящий 1] (20:47 - 23:04) It means if I have trouble with my husband the way to fix that problem is to help somebody else who has trouble with their husband. Then my problem will disappear. That's the first of the seven steps in tantra. dun nam dak Look for help in the right place. You don't have to look on the internet. You don't have to buy a book about marriage. Find someone who has a problem with their husband. Take them to Starbucks shimbaka and talk to them. Give them some help. Then somebody told me, no Geshe Michael, how can I help someone with a husband problem if I have a husband problem? I'm the worst person to help them. That's probably true. But anyway, if you try to help them you will make new karma and your husband will change. That's the only way to get help. So in Buddhism that's called taking refuge. You don't ask a statue for help. It's possible if you have enough faith the statue will talk. It's true. But we don't know if we have enough karma. But we all have enough karma to go to Starbucks and help another person who is having trouble with their husband. So this is refuge. [Говорящий 2] (23:06 - 23:07) Number one. [Говорящий 1] (23:07 - 24:13) Number two. THOB GZHI TZANG BA'I SGO NAS ZHAG PA BYAS THOB GZHI TZANG BA'I SGO NAS ZHAG PA BYAS means use the four powers. THOB GZHI means use four powers. Then we study them in DCI. We will study them this week also. This is a way to get rid of your bad karmas. Old bad karmas. That's number two. Third one. When you are going to bed think about all the good things that you did today and the good things that other people did today and that's called what? Coffee meditation. So those of you who care about Vajrayogini sadhana Kwang chok sum la dak kyap chi I go for protection. [Говорящий 2] (24:13 - 24:18) Those of you who care about Vajrayogini sadhana I go for protection. [Говорящий 1] (24:18 - 25:10) DIG PA THAMS CAD SO SO ZHAG I confess my bad deeds. RDO BA'I RGYAS LA BYAS YI RANG I rejoice in good deeds. Then SANGS RGYAS BYANG CHUB YOD KYI GSUNG means I have a vision of a world where there is no poverty and there is no loneliness and there is no war. That's called bodhichitta. That's number four. SANGS RGYAS BYANG CHUB YOD KYI GSUNG SANGS RGYAS CHOS DANG SO'O CHOS LA BYANG CHUB PAR DU DAG KYAB CI Then in Vajrayogini there is another dak kyap chi which means what? [Говорящий 2] (25:13 - 25:16) Dak kyap chi I go for refuge. [Говорящий 1] (25:17 - 26:03) So why does he do it twice? Number five is now we divide bodhichitta into two parts. First one is a prayer. I wish the whole world would have no war. No hunger. No unhappiness. Then the second part of that's called mun sem. The second part is called juk sem. Juk sem means I'm going to get on an airplane and go to Mexico so I can become a teacher. [Говорящий 2] (26:06 - 26:07) It means action. Do some action. [Говорящий 1] (26:10 - 26:27) First one is a prayer. Second one is action. If you're still counting those are five and six of the tantric version. Then number seven is called ngong mun. [Говорящий 2] (26:27 - 26:32) Ngong mun means dedication. [Говорящий 1] (26:34 - 27:14) That's what we do at the end of the mandala practice at the end of the class. Then they say gewa di, gewa kun, that's the number seven. I give away the karma. So we had an accounting problem in our company in DCI. The accounts got messed up. We lost the accountant and they didn't even give us the records for a long time. So we didn't get paid for six months. [Говорящий 2] (27:14 - 27:20) It was very interesting because we were all borrowing money from other people. [Говорящий 1] (27:24 - 28:02) Then suddenly we got six months salary in one day. And of course you're thinking what to do with this money? It's a lot of money. Then you think, oh I should put it in a bank or something. What is the bank? What's the best bank? People. Other people. Don't put the money in the stock market and give it to other people. They are doing this project in China. [Говорящий 2] (28:03 - 28:11) I will give some money for that. I will give some money for the computer project. [Говорящий 1] (28:11 - 28:32) I will give some money for the Mexico retreat. A Dharma person is making investment immediately in people. Then that will come back a hundred times. That's number seven. [Говорящий 2] (28:33 - 28:37) You made a lot of good karma here tonight. [Говорящий 1] (28:37 - 29:33) Every day you are making a lot of good karma. So at the end SKYE BA DI SKYE BO KHO BYANG ROL MI ZHIG MTHO TSO I give away the karma. You take it. You take it. Then you put it in the bank. Then you can't lose it because other people are holding it for you. Alright, those are the seven according to Tantra. There are other explanations and I cannot tell you. BYAM DGOS Right Ningo? We are at BYAM DGOS SONGKHA PA? BYAM DGOS SONGKHA PA CHEN POS KYANG UL GAR ZAG CANG ZAD PA'I NYAM TO BSKYED PAR CHEN THUNG PA LTAR RGYUD MIN NA RTOGS PA NYUR DU SKYE BA SOGS DAM BYAM DGOS SONGKHA PA BYAM DGOS SONGKHA PA means the person who founded our lineage. [Говорящий 2] (29:34 - 29:40) 600 years ago. [Говорящий 1] (29:41 - 31:29) He was a big philosopher and he was like the Cervantes of Tibet. Shakespeare. I know Cervantes because I learned one page of Cervantes and I liked it a lot. There's about a thousand more pages I didn't study yet, but even from the first page I understand he's a great writer. In Spanish I studied that. Anyway, even this great philosopher and this greater writer, he went on retreat so he could do a lot of mandala. He didn't think it was a waste of time. He didn't think it was for babies. So he went to a place called Ulga. Ulga is a special river valley with some caves and he did his long retreats there. And because he did these seven steps, THOB PA SKYE PAR CAN THRUNG, he got, Aldo used a nice word today, he got a realization which would help millions of people. Then they say, if those of you who are following the Tibetan, it says THAR. What's THAR? Say again? THAR. No, that's THAR. SHIN, like SHIN DU. [Говорящий 2] (31:29 - 31:30) SHIN DU. [Говорящий 1] (31:34 - 31:36) That's SHIN DU. Anyway, SHIN DU. [Говорящий 2] (31:37 - 31:41) SHIN DU means as if. [Говорящий 1] (31:42 - 32:35) Like, like THAR or SHIN means like, like that, right? Why did they put that word there? He did his mandalas and then he got a big realization. It looked like. It means he got it a long time ago. These big teachers, they pretend they made a mistake or something like that. They pretend they don't know something. My teacher used to do that a lot. Then all the students in the class are correcting the teacher. No, Rinpoche, it wasn't Chenrez, it wasn't Avalokiteshvara, it was Maitreya. [Говорящий 2] (32:35 - 32:37) Rinpoche, it wasn't Avalokiteshvara, it was Maitreya. [Говорящий 1] (32:38 - 33:30) And then Rinpoche said, really? And then it helps the student, okay? No, even with his driving, people correct him. He memorized the New Jersey driver's license manual. He memorized it. He got 100% on the examination. He's a 65-year-old Tibetan Lama. He didn't start English until he was almost 60. Then he would make some mistake in the class. He would say, this book was written by Je Tsongkapa. [Говорящий 2] (33:35 - 33:37) People would correct him. [Говорящий 1] (33:37 - 33:54) And then in private his English was perfect. Like Dalai Lama's were like that, same. So anyway, you can think about it. LTAR Looks like he did his mandalas and he got some realization. [Говорящий 2] (33:55 - 34:00) But really he got it a long time before that. [Говорящий 1] (34:00 - 34:28) RGYU MENA THOB PA NYUR DU SKYE BA SOGS How do you say? RGYU means your mind stream, stream of your mind. And if it's ripe, you can see emptiness easily. [Говорящий 2] (34:28 - 34:32) How to make it ripe? [Говорящий 1] (34:32 - 35:36) These seven steps. Do the seven steps, then meditate. Easy. Don't do seven steps and then meditate. Nothing will happen. You can find many people like that. We had two examples for that in the last retreat. What were they? There was one thing, bad things are ripe and good things are ripe. Yeah, one is a pimple. I don't know in other countries, but in America when you are 15 years old, you are spending three hours every day. It has to be ripe. You can't pop it too early. [Говорящий 2] (35:40 - 35:42) Wait one more day. [Говорящий 1] (35:43 - 37:10) Then poop comes out. That's for bad things. Bad karma. There's a way to ripen it, so it's easy to take out. What was his example for good karma? Fruit on a tree, like an apple. Banana. So I lived in Hawaii for a short time to surf. We didn't have any money. We used to go in the jungle to find the bananas. Coconuts. You will find one banana group of, what do you call it? Branch of bananas. They are green. Then every day you have to go back to look at them and see. If you see other footprints, you take it. You don't wait. You just eat the green banana. So there's a time when it's ripe, it's easy to take the banana. [Говорящий 2] (37:15 - 37:21) So in the mind, realizations, they are the same. [Говорящий 1] (37:22 - 37:23) Pick it at the right time. [Говорящий 2] (37:24 - 37:32) Make it ripe with the seven steps. [Говорящий 1] (37:32 - 40:43) That's the seven steps. SA CHEN PO LA GNAS PA'I BYANG CHUB SEMS PA RNAMS KYANG SA BCANG LA MTSOR BA'I BAS PA YIN TE SA DANG PO LA GNAS PA'I BYANG SEMS PAS KU LUS RGYAL CHUR NAS SANGS RGYAS KYI SHING RGYAL LA PHYIN TE CHOS PA BUL ZHING Then he said, even the great bodhisattvas who reached a high level, they also still do these seven. And he gives some examples. Even he calls it MTSOR. MTSOR means what? MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR MTSOR He's making a joke here. Everybody wants to do deep chakra practices. MTSOR BA'I BAS PHYIN NA'ANG THAG PA MTSOR BA'I BAS Right? Then he said, offer some fruit. Offer your teacher a banana. Don't worry about your chakras. MTSOR BA'I BAS he uses the same word. He's making a joke. Concentrate on the seven steps. They are higher than all those chakra things. Then he said there are bodhisattvas on the first bodhisattva level. They have the power to make many bodies of themselves. They like it. Why? Then they can offer a hundred bananas at the same time. Ligya Arjuna Sangye Shing, they go to a hundred Buddha paradises and they offer a banana in each paradise. After you get the ability to create a hundred copies of yourself, what should you do with it? Go buy a hundred bananas. They think that's the best thing to do. All right. DE BZHIN GZAN YID PA SOGS NAS SANGS, MA RGYAS BAR DU LUS RIM BZHIN MANG PO'I THROB PA'I CHOS PA BYED RGYAS MANG THUGS DANG BA LA MDZAD NA, RANG RES Then as they reach the second bodhisattva level, then they're able to send out a thousand bodies. Then what do they do? Buy a thousand bananas. [Говорящий 2] (40:46 - 40:59) They're happy to have more bodies, because they can make more small, sweet offerings. [Говорящий 1] (41:00 - 41:22) That's the secret to meditation. So you have to understand something. Meditation doesn't start when you sit down. Meditation starts the day before or the week before. You are making offerings. [Говорящий 2] (41:22 - 41:27) You're helping poor people. Helping sick people. [Говорящий 1] (41:27 - 41:28) Doing your yoga. [Говорящий 2] (41:29 - 41:35) Cleaning out the bad karmas. Collecting new karmas. [Говорящий 1] (41:36 - 42:09) Then sit down. Then meditation, boom. Mind is ripe. If you are watching TV all day or internet all day, then eight o'clock sit down to meditate. Of course, your mind is going to be full of internet junk, and you won't be able to meditate. I don't have time to put a banana on the altar every morning. [Говорящий 2] (42:09 - 42:14) I have to check my Facebook. [Говорящий 1] (42:15 - 43:35) Then you will get that kind of result also. In your meditation, more Facebook messages to send. Okay? So don't ignore these seven small practices. One more paragraph, and then we'll take a break. DE NA, DE NA, CHOS CHOS YAN LA BDUN PO'I DI GNYIS. These seven steps of the CHOS CHOS means regular daily practice. DONG NGAG NYID DKA' SAR BYANG GI GANG SDOM CHEN PO STE. In both open teachings and the secret teachings, it's crucial. It's totally crucial. Those of you who are trying to learn Tibetan, there's a very, very beautiful, powerful word there. It's called GAG SDOM. GAG SDOM. It's a very strange word. GAG means to stop. [Говорящий 2] (43:36 - 43:40) SDOM means to put everything together. [Говорящий 1] (43:41 - 44:03) But GAG SDOM by itself means, it means like a nuclear bomb, for your spiritual practice. GAG SDOM has a special meaning. Nuclear bomb for your spiritual practice. Why they call GAG SDOM, I don't know. [Говорящий 2] (44:04 - 44:05) Okay. [Говорящий 1] (44:07 - 44:16) What's the GAG SDOM here? What's the nuclear bomb? Yeah, offer banana, etc. Seven small things. They are little small things. [Говорящий 2] (44:16 - 44:18) Seven small things. [Говорящий 1] (44:22 - 44:49) DPER NA GYON MIN PA NAG TU RUNG DANG, GNYON RTEN MIN PA SHING DO LONG CHOS RUNG LTAR YIN It's like the example I gave you before about the pimple and the banana being ripe and ready to pick. Okay, so maybe we stop there. We stop there and we take a break.
